Where’s the love?
ESPN yesterday ran the weekly update on the Heisman race. It was interesting to hear the phrase “among the leaders in total offense.”
That is because the current leader in total offense, Bryant Moniz, isn’t even in the discussion. But don’t blame ESPN or any other media entity across the nation. Time to point the finger at UH. The basic rule of any campaign is to start early. It would have been part of the school’s pet phrase — due diligence — to launch Moniz’s Heisman campaign this year, setting it up for the 2011 election campaign.
Is Moniz a true Heisman candidate? Who knows? Who cares? It’s all about creating a buzz for the program that is exploring — through due diligence, of course — a national TV contract. One of the oldest phrases in marketing is: Who cares what the hamburger tastes like, it’s the packaging that counts. Moniz’s talents are hidden in plain wrapping.
As it is now, Moniz is battling for honorable mention in the WAC. Boise State’s Kellen Moore and Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick are regarded as the WAC’s best quarterbacks, and Utah State’s Dionde Borel is getting lots of publicity. Even Idaho’s Nathan Enderle is drawing consideration from pro scouts.
Moniz? Most didn’t even notice he was not at practice yesterday.
Meanwhile, it wouldn’t hurt to launch that Twitter account for Kealoha Pilares, the nation’s leader in receiving yards.

It was nice to see Tua Mahaley stop by practice yesterday. It was Mahaley who made the key block in the Warriors’ victory at Fresno State two years ago.

ESPN-Australia is town doing interviews with Adrian Thomas and multi-tasking Alex Dunnachie:
first
good morning ST and all the Tsaikos
Morning!
aloha
inferiority complex UH?
Pomai:
Yep… lots of muscle building and speed, but perhaps not enough cardio. Maybe all the linemen should all box 7 rounds or more as a regular routine during the offseason. Good for footwork, stamina, and for mastering that jab. The good news was that both teams were gassed in the last game.
La Tech plays hard ball… but our Warriors were able to stop them on the fourth.
Aussie, aussie, aussie….oiy oiy oiy!
And a good morning to all.
Right on, ST! Most of these other big schools will get a player’s name out there after just a single big-production game. And yet, we seem to always wait until mainstream media starts picking up on a player first. By that time, half of the season has already gone by, if not more.
I don’t think we necessarily need to bring someone into UH marketing from a BCS conference, but we should be learning from what they do! Most of this happens throughout the whole year, in numerous sports… not just football or basketball!
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Top ten – unbelievable!
top 10?
BIK
Mo went though all that drama in the off season. I just cant see how UH was going to simultaneously keep him suspended from the team….AND promote him as a heisman candidate.
BIK
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
Excellent post above, Mr. Tsai!
Good morning, all!!!
Oy! Oy! Oy!
Is it Derek I. who should be getting the word out? He should at least be contacting news agencies to correct the stories we see about the nation’s leaders in offense being somewhere else on the mainland. Who puts out the word re: our Heisman-quality players? UH started a campaign to get Salas some attention, but I haven’t seen much about that lately. Someone should be pumping up the public/fans about Moniz’ numbers so they vote for him in the Davey O’Brian QB award.
http://www.voteobrien.org/nu_register.asp
Vote for Moniz! Let’s make some noise!
If Hawaii/Moniz beats Fresno St. and Nevada the next 2 weeks he should get a lot of publicity. Beat Boise St. and win the conference and for sure Moniz will be All WAC, no question, maybe even some All America mention. I think Moniz likes being under the radar. He plays better and with less stress. Stay humble.
It’s nice to see that our Aussie stalwarts will be gettin’ some national love down under! That can’t hurt UH’s recruiting efforts there either.
Hey Slugger, Hi Tom, Howzit BIK!
Fresno State’s school paper, the Collegian, has a good article about this weekends upcoming game. The article also stated that Moniz and Colburn are two of the WAC’s best QBs. Guess thats based on stats.
http://collegian.csufresno.edu/2010/10/06/saturday-air-show/
Hope both teams display sportsmanship.
Hit ’em hard! Then pick ’em up.
Brush off the dirt and grass off ’em.
Pat ’em on the butt. And send ’em on their merry way.
Winning the WAC games will do all the talking for Moniz.
The CFB media already have who they want.
The Heisman contention really does help a teams exposure, but hard to expose a team that will not be on national tv for the remainder of the season.
Took all of last season for the media to really focus and take seriously on Kellen Moore with their undefeated season and Bowl win against TCU .
Monday’s Na Koa Lunch Report is how up:
http://www.nakoa.org/?p=650
Yep, the powers that be in college ball do it “their” way.
We all remember what happened to Colt.
That being said, we still need to do everything we can to promote Hawaii’s star players, if for nothing else to help their stock in the draft. It also helps the players mindset too, to get proper recognition.
top 20?
guess not
Promoting Moniz while he was away from the team would have drawn *negative* attention on UH.
Promoting Moniz when UH was 1-2 would not have done any good no matter what his stats were. Heisman candidates get attention when their teams win.
If UH sweeps the next 2 games and Moniz has good games *then* Moniz will get attention.
ST is correct that UH should do more to market the team…but the UH marketing staff is cut to the bone just like the compliance staff. You have to spend money on personnel to get more marketing, but UH has been on a hiring freeze and is looking to CUT staff and not replace those that leave–that means the people in the Athletic Department are doing more just to cover the unfilled positions.
UH should do more for compliance. UH should do more for marketing its team and players. UH should do more for the Asian market. UH should do more for its academic support. UHAD has a $2 million hole in its budget that it has to fill which makes addressing all those other points very difficult.
Aloha Kakahiaka!
Hopefully the stars will align and converge and Hawaii will peak at the end of the season.
Warriors have a lot to prove that they are not just a shot in the pan against a weak sos – which is part of the dissing media fodder along with words like system, gaudy, pass-happy… etc.
Winning. One game at a time. WE BELIEVE and we ALL NEED TO BELIEVE!
Happy hump day!
One thing I noticed about Boise’s last game. Kellen Moore rarely got touched by NMSU’s defense. He had all the time in the world to throw the ball. I can only remember him geting knocked down only once.
If ESPN cared about UH, they would include Moniz among the leaders when they talk about offense. ESPN even owns UH’s TV rights and can show UH games for free. They can put UH games on ESPN GamePlan for basically nothing except the bandwidth (and they have lots of space since nothing else is on GamePlan then). This is another example about how losing hurts the program–ESPN sure showed in 2006 and 2007 (and in 2004 with Tim Chang going after the record) that they would feature UH when they felt that UH could bring in the TV ratings.
Part of the problem is that ESPN seems to like JJ and JJ seems to attract casual TV viewers. It isn’t a coincidence that ESPN has already shown SMU twice this season (and CBS CS has shown 2 other SMU games nationwide this season and shows JJ’s coaches show 15 or so times per week). But even JJ had to win before they showed SMU–ESPN showed his first game at SMU and then when Rice won they stopped showing SMU again until they started winning.
Garret is right. Why market Moniz when he was suspended and then when his team was losing? Win the next two games and then see him being marketed.
If UH wins the next 2 games, the lights will be shining brightly upon Moniz. UH realistically could not promote him when he was not even on the team….really. And it was not a ‘given’ that he would be back on the team, a lot of speculation.
Compliance issues will continue to haunt UH; and marketing is what it is. Have to do more with less, that is how businesses are surviving these lean times….. improvise and survive…name of the game.
GO WARRIORS
g’morning Tsaiko Ohana!!!
# 24 Garret agree 100% on that one, also hurts that the person who is marketing the programs is not experienced in that area all that much. A good marketing person is one who thinks outside the box(I know we throw that around a lot) an it is well documented that UH does not do that. They also make it difficult for anyone else to also.
The biggest thing that would help UHAD to improve compliance, marketing, and everything else is for more people to pay to go to the games. The paid attendance for Charleston Southern and La Tech was at the level that UHAD needs if we wish for the programs to be upgraded.
#29 Bulla – But at least don’t make it hard for those who do want to market programs??????
Pomai,
If UH just as one inexperienced marketing person, I wouldn’t expect much. Major college Athletic Departments have 10+ people whose full-time job is marketing. That is when you can see so much done with the media, with fan interaction, newsletters, etc.
I remember posting the article about how Alabama had 8 full-time people for compliance just for football a few years ago and UH had just 1 full-time person for all sports. I’d bet that the marketing staff of their Athletic Department is even bigger than their compliance staff.
#32 Garret – What I would like to see is just for one game JD cut the price of tickets in half, If we can put 25,000 in the stands at the prices now, would it be too much of a strecth to think at half price we could get close to 50,000?
hey, let’s try to get ESPN to put the UH/FSU game on GamePlan – please contact ESPN at the following link and ask for it. It’s worked before…
http://espn.go.com/espn/contact?lang=EN&country=united%20states
#34 Garret – it’s not that much better than compliance, I myself see the problem as overall in the mindset of the people who are working at UH.
#33m i agree Pomai, we both know the challenges in Manoa are many, and some times the doors are closed to those that can help. Mahalo for all you do with the Wahine Softball program……awesome job my brother…..
Not only does the athletic department have a hamburger on their plate, they also got 2 scoops of mac salad, doritos, an extra pickle, a fruit cup, chili and rice, cone sushi….
and then you gotta worry about your dog helping himself to some of the grinds when you not looking
and dont forget that attendance is down….
time for someone to make the geocities website for moniz
I thought UH chose to promote Greg Salas early on? But with Pilares putting up his numbers I think it would be hard for people to just look at Salas. And Paredes is doing well also.
You can chose to promote someone early but they still will have to perform and get the huge numbers. To me it is a gamble at best.
Good Morning Tsaiko Family!
dcwarrior –
Last night I noticed that espn3 was showing the UH/Fresno game starting at 10:30 eastern time.
I wasn’t talking about promoting Moniz during the Spring or Summer. And I don’t recall hearing his reason for not training with the team. That was a personal issue to me, so I don’t get how anyone can judge his absence. I’m talking about how BCS schools will jump on any opportunity to get a player’s name into the media after just one breakout game, even if that player wasn’t even considered a Heisman hopeful during the preseason.
Upon learning that Moniz now leads the nation in Passing Yards, along with having the top two Receivers in the country… that’s when marketing, and even the WAC, should start making noise. Way back when, the WAC was known for QB’s and wide open offenses. We’ve (the WAC) has let that positive light disappear, taking a backseat to all these talking heads around the country. Just the constant mention of those players and their teams in the media helps with recruiting. Sportscasters then start talking about those players’ supporting cast; who will be graduating, who will be returning the following year, etc. It gives potential recruits more options as to where they might be able to go and possibly start playing earlier in their collegiate careers.
Like everything else in life you need to know your priorities and the Heisman is on the low side, you need to correct the things you have control over then work on the things you don’t, and we all know that isn’t being done.
On the Warrior’s UH page at ESPN, there are three games which have the ESPN3 label next to them…
@ Fresno State
@ Utah State
@ New Mexico State
Of course, these can change in a heartbeat, but that’s how they are shown at the moment.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/_/id/62/hawaii-warriors
The Heisman might not be a priority, but the free advertising could go a long way just by constantly mentioning players’ names and schools on the news.
Good morning Tsaikos…hope all have a great day….
ST–
What happened to Earvin Sione. He’s no longer on the roster for this year.
Great morning to all!
Well I gave up on the Heisman as soon as 06 season finished I mean Colt put up Godly numbers we played Alabama, Oregon State, Purdue, almost upset Boise, crushed Fresno an he threw for 58 td’s He led the nation in scoring and passing efficiency, finishing the regular season with a 182.8 rating, 5,549 yards and completed 72.15% of his passes, the best in Division I-A yet remarkably they questioned his accuracy an he also rushed 3 tds in thats 61 tds all together. But despite that he finished 6th in the heisman voting. I mean all of this an he finished 6th because they always brought up the Run-n-shot offense an WAC. As long as they run this “system” none of the players will get the recognition they deserve no matter what maybe a little phrase here or there but The Heisman will always go to a “Big Name” college school because they will always label our guys as “system” no matter how much yards, how much tds, no matter how well they play.
Surprising to see some bloggers on here who were calling for Moniz’s head and demanding a change of starting QB’s the first couple of games are now on the Moniz bandwagon.
Yessir, it is a year of QB’s in the WAC.
But dont get me wrong I wanna see 1 of our players win it. I just hope they focus more on Winning games then individual accalades!
I wonder how many UH quarterbacks will be making the trip this week.
I’d say 3-4 QB’s will make the trip.
NCAA I myself never called for his head, but I did question him starting/or the best, an I still feel that way, but it is what it is and he is the starting QB so we need to support him. But in all honesty he is not Heisman material as Marazulu pointed out if they wouldn’t consider Colt and Moniz is not on the same level as Colt. I would fear that promoting Moniz would bring more bad publicity than good. So rather than promote him for that, change direction an promote him for WAC POY, or Davie Obrian award.
Good to read from the advertiser about the UH games being televised in Japan and translated in Japanese. Getting closer to owning the pacific market?
Good morning everyone!
Nice to see attention from EPN-Australia on campus.
Anybody know how many of our games get broadcast in Samoa and Australia? Teams interested in recruiting there might want to play UH more often if we can break into those markets – even on a tape-delayed basis.
We can help PUBLICIZE the Warriors and Mighty Mo by voting for him in the Davey O’Brien Awards.
http://www.voteobrien.org/round1.asp
He is one vote behind Kyle Padron and #44 out of 88 QBs.
#54… BG808… That’s one thing that we can do, and do to the best of our abilities to make us that much more appealing in the next round of realignments.
My response to BG808 also applies to MIH’s comment in #56 above. That is going outside of the box and may get us some double takes if we do it well enough.
For me it doesn’t matter what your predecessor did or how much better he was than you. All that matters is the numbers you put in now and the success your team has based on your numbers. There is no hurt in publicizing the accomplishments of your players and that is what the UH media team is not doing to its fullest capacity. Garret mentioned the shortcomings of the marketing team so that is maybe why they cannot give their full effort in that area.
Maybe that is why Hewitt did not win volleyball POW.
If UH can own the rights for international rebroadcasts, I’d send em down there for free for the first season. Just to get a following.
Great site! I come here all of the time so keep up the great work!
Ms. LizKauai m/
I just cast my vote for Moniz. He is now #43 on the list!
NCAA not trying to compare the two, but the problem is in perception from the mainstay media, that is where we run into problems, because they do compare, too much so.
#61 madeinhawaii – crap beleive me that is a can of worms……
If the SPAM attack can stop Boise and win the WAC, I’m all for promoting him for President..
Pomai..
It all depends on how the bid is worded, eh? Isn’t that coming up in a couple of years?
NCAA — you made the right call on my 53 year old baby brother. Hope it’s not hereditary. Actually, they come to Hawaii almost every year and alternate between Kona and Honolulu. Been trying to get him to visit Maui and Kauai too, but he says it costs too much (no good deals from the mainland).
A 7-day all meals included cruise through Hawaii for $900 per person is probably worthwhile for mainland visitors (less so for residents). He tells me this trip cost him under $500 per person, meals & entertainment extra (unless he sits in the living room every evening)…and sister-in-law certainly supports Hawaii’s economy… 😆
Agree with the other posters. Beat Fresno and Nevada and people will notice UH and its quarterback. Smoke Charley Southern and no one cares.
Fresno is the key test game. Beat Fresno and we got a good team this year. Lose and I’m afraid we’re to continue mired in mediocrity.
Is UH the team that led Colorado 10-0 at the half? Or the team that completely crumbled in the second half of that game?
Manoa Mist:
I have difficulties in measuring any team based on it’s performance as a visiting team to a stadium one mile high or more.. UNLESS that team normally practices in such an environment. We need to build our stadium in a volcano… and secretly put some ground trembling machines below.
Oh yeah.. and steam vents.
All this talk about Heisman I think is good. My point was in posting Colt’s stats is he had a Hell of a season an finished 6th I mean if Colt produced such a great season an against some BCS name teams I dont think there gonna give Moniz any respect Nationally. Mo is a capable QB, Kealoha should be in talks of Heisman to with his season but he aint getting nothing Despite everything I think the Warriors dont need to think about individual awards an take it 1 game at a time if the players wanna win awards its simple just let there play do the Talking!
OF TOPIC
I know there are more lurkers than poster on the blog. I need some help with a project for the Na Wahine Softball Booster Club, does anyone have a heat press that they would let me use? If you can help out please email me at pomai at nawahine dot com
Now back to your regular schedule programing!!!!!
Bigislandkurt has a good point in his #11 post.
All the while during the off season I can see UH prepared http://www.catchgregsalas.com to promote him as an All-American.
Manoa Mist,
National perception has already doomed us to mediocrity. We beat Fresno State on Saturday and ANY talk, if any at all, will be more directed at what Fresno State did to themselves to lose the game as opposed to what WE did to win.
It happened in 2008.
UH 31
Fresno 21
In the case of Hewitt getting shafted for the WAC player of the week honor, its more on the WAC as who else should the WAC be monitoring other than the teams in conference play?
The WAC should have known.
Heat Press???
To iron pants?
National perception has already doomed us to mediocrity. We beat Fresno State on Saturday and ANY talk, if any at all, will be more directed at what Fresno State did to themselves to lose the game as opposed to what WE did to win.

Kazz you are so right its a double standard at ESPN… An lets be real the Fair Sports Analyst will always talk highly of the BCS conference teams.
From the top… then trickles down.
Plant a seed, water it less than you should, give it minimal sunlight, and then expect it to grow in to a REDWOOD????
I see and hear compairisons of UH’s infrastructure from academics to athletics with GIANT schools like Bama, USC, Florida to the point of nausea…. Until we can be on PAR with schools of equal resources, THEN let’s start drooling over the BIG STAGE.
Aspirations and “thinking outside the box” is good, but it’s better to realize the situation you are in now and work with it and around it if possible to get better otherwise all the “thinking outside the box” stuff becomes something ANYONE can do and that is just to “talk” about it.
#31
If true, the question is not why Moniz is not getting publicity. The real question is how did that inexperience person get the job as head of marketing? If you ever applied for a job at UH you know the job experience they are looking for is almost unattainable. And then they end up hiring that cute boy or girl who was a student worker or someone else who has connections within the department. This is one of the main reason things don’t get done at UH. Sorry for the rant.
Go Warriors!
Ipu Man,
If get one heat press to iron on to balls then better too.
SOFTBALLS!
(get your minds out of the gutter people!)
hmmmm, the owner of the Star Advertiser owns
a lot of other newspapers on the mainland, no?
Maybe he can help UH football public relations by
giving them coverage in his other papers…
A heat press to iron on balls to the walls tee shirts?
Hmmm this post is nice and interesting. I’ll use it for my project :). Can you comment me some related articles that I can read too?
Markaluzu,
The evidence is everywhere.
Remember when people said “just win and you will get respect”?
Pfffftttt…. The softball team did just that to the #1 team twice on their home field last season and NADA…
You see, Hawaii has to win it all, pound out insane statistical figures, and win at travel distances no other team in the country will ever have to travel to get the same treatment a mainland team that wins sometimes but not all the time gets.
Elitist attitudes with elitist media coverage for elitist programs with the right amount of MONEY.
BTW,
Anyone that thinks and believes we garnered TRUE national recognition in the eyes of the national sports media and the mainstream college football landscape under June Jones is kidding themselves.
Howzit DPK!
BIK
Ipu Man – heat press to make custom tee shirts…..
#87 Kazz – We will never know – thanks fumbler.
Hmmm anybody read this article:
http://www.teamspeedkills.com/2010/8/18/1629472/boise-state-wants-ncaa-to-require
Boise State Wants NCAA to Require Home-and-Home Series
If even Boise feels the pinch in scheduling… what chance for Hawaii?
Sounds like you guys are giving up on trying to publicize what our student athletes do just because they won’t make it to the Heisman ballot. How do you expect us to get the attention of those 4*+ recruits, if you don’t even want to make it known that they can have some serious fun in our program? And, this is not just for football, but for all sports. These kids perform because they love what they do, and they want to represent themselves, our university, and our state to the best of their abilities. And we repay them by not publicizing their accomplishments because we feel that it will be a futile exercise at best? Not good. I have a sick feeling in my stomach as I type this.
Phew… Boise is 62-2 at home in the past 10 years. The only two teams they lost to at home were Boston College and Washington State.
Michigan Warrior…
touche…
WASHINGTON STATE????????????????????????????
The Piikoi Scorpions beat Washington State for homecoming last season and Kalani had their way with Washington State the year before!!!
You sure it wasn’t Worshington State that beat BSU in Boise??
Kazz #75…and Zulu #79 What really irks me is that some of the ESPN guys (ala Mark May et al) keep talking about QBs that put up these gawdy numbers. The other week (I think it was week 3) they were talking about some BCS QB who had like 11 TDs and only 3 picks and were saying they couldn’t believe the accuracy of that guy and that he was a great one that slipped under the radar but would be noticed. When we had a certain QB with unheard of accuracy he got no love. Even Moniz has been having very good accuracy numbers and TD to INT ratios over these first five games and no love….sheesh…
#93… MIH… I guess Oregon State’s paint-their-practice-field-blue experiment didn’t make a difference.
Michigan Warrior…
I think it would have been cheaper to just buy blue visors for the entire team.
Ooh, good one. Then we need those polarized lenses.. the ones that help to see straight through the water to spock the fish!
Michigan Warrior..
No problemo.. we got the Kealoha Polarize, da receiver, remember..?
How awesome. Really enjoyed reading through your post. Be interesting to find out how this develops, will bookmark your blog and keep a look out for any updates. Keep up the nice work. Bye for now, Lewis

Re a heat press: Many different community groups make their own tee-shirts rather than paying big bucks to have them made.
You can also rent them – go to Craigslist and post a request.
We should back up our players. An they do deserve recognition for there accolades I just dont think we should expect any “Fairness” in the whole Heisman scene for Mo or Pilares. But I agree they do deserve the recognition for everything they do.
It’s all about wins when you talk about Heisman consideration. Not just any wins either, they have to be quality wins. If we were 5-0 right now and had spanked everyone, how much you want to bet the “SPAM” Attack would start getting some love like the former “Dreadheads” from ESPN etc… The problem is that we don’t produce enough quality opponents and have faired pretty poorly against quality teams such as USC, Wisconsin, etc… Colt put up video game like numbers, but where was the quality win at? I mean 12-0 season against who?… and then spanked by Georgia? Our conference is already considered weak as crap even with Boise State so in order for anyone to get noticed, Colt, Moniz, Pilares, Salas, etc… they have to frikkin dominate against quality guys like the USC’s, Wisconsin’s, etc… which hasn’t happened at all. Dunno about you but almost every televised game against a quality opponent we’ve had, we’ve made ourselves look silly. Georgia, Florida, USC, Wisconsin, etc… We’re already the bastard child that nobody wants to give love too, so we just gotta keep winning period! Individual accolades will follow…IMO.
Hello there, I’ve been reading through your web site only a few days and I just wanted to express your way of writing is top class. Take care.
It’s all about the W’s. If we want recognition we need to beat Fresno, and Nevada, and Boise. Do that and we’ll get plenty of attention from ESPN. Fail to do it and we’ll neither receive nor merit much attention regardless of how many yards Moniz throws for.
Perhaps, on our UHAD website, we could honor those student athletes (on a weekly basis) who had a monster previous week, in all sports, and not just limited to one person on offense, one on defense, etc., but all top performers. And it doesn’t matter if we won or lost.
Call it our Warriors/Wahine of the Week, or something.
Regardless as long as Moniz and the boys stay on par and continue to get better each week and start putting teams away early, they will get noticed. Right now I think we have only 1 1/2 out of the 3 phases figured out. The offense is obviously on point, defense is coming around which I give 1/2 too, and special teams hasn’t really done anything special yet so the get 0. If we can get all 3 in sync, no one will beat us plain and simple!
Michigan Warrior,
http://www.hawaiiathletics.com has something like that at the bottom of the home page. It’s like a student athlete spotlight of sorts. One male and one female from ALL of UH’s 19 programs.
However, it’s not something reflective of what happened in the past week. It’s more like a general overall recognition and I don’t know how often it’s updated.
Moss is a Viking. 8-4 is BACK baby!!!
BIK
most of the warrior linemen are grossly overweight/out of shape. they would make albert haynesworth look like usain bolt. can anyone guesstimate the time it would take the warrior linemen (both ol and dl) to run a 300 yd shuttle? supposedly mike golic did it in 70 and then 73 seconds. what about the warriors? bob stoops requires the linemen at oklahoma to run the 300 yd shuttle under 52 seconds. thats fifty-two seconds. until the warriors have higher conditioning standards, they will always be losing the 2nd half battles. it showed last year against wasu, unlv, and the rest of the season, with the exception of navy. but it’s a good thing tommy heffernan took over for the pitiful, disrespected mel delaura. as the warriors steadily improve on their off season strength and conditioning it will become more evident in the games, and eventually they’ll be able to stuff it down the throats of the lesser teams from bcs conferences (like colorado).
Wade,
Agree. I think Heffernan’s promotion is one of the best things to happen to the program in recent memory.
Kazz, I’ve seen that before, but it’s just a link to their background info. While that’s okay, I still would like to see actual recognition of our kids’ accomplishments, week to week, throughout their respective seasons. Maybe have some journalism students assigned to cover each sport, along with guidelines to follow in order to select those top performers.
What goes around comes around. Things go in cycle. Michigan was on hard times for about 4 years, Florida St. was mediocre the last 5 or 6 years, Notre Dame (so, so). Even
Alabama has some lean years, and so did Nebraska under Callahan. Washington has been down for about 8 years. UCLA hasn’t been a powerhouse either. Soon, Boise St. and Nevada will come down to earth after Kaepernick and Moore graduates and they wll go through lean years also. It’s just a fact of life. I guarantee you that Chris Peterson will leave for another job (too many offers and the temptation for the big bucks).
I know one thing. Only 5 non BCS teams can say that they have been to the top of the mountain so to speak. First, BYU, they won a national championship. Boise St., Utah, TCU, and drum roll, HAWAII who have made it to a BCS game. That is why the 2007 Hawaii team, undefeated at 12-0, is forever will be talked about for a long, long time. It was magical, the way Hawaii won every close game, kicking a field goal at Nevada, winning in overtime at La Tech, coming back from 21-0 down to beat Washington, score 68 points at Fresno St., and beating Boise St. which felt sooooo good. And let’s not overlook that Hawaii had to come back from 14 points in the 4th quarter in the rain and slop at San Jose St. Plus, we had June Jones, our Heisman, Colt Brennan, Davone, C.J., Ryan, and Jason, Jacob, Mouton, etc. etc. etc. And we can’t forget that we had a pastor too, to give the team inspiration. Maybe it was a once in a lifetime thing. but, for me I long for the day when it will happen again and that’s the beauty of today, we can always hope that our Warriors will rise up again and will be better. We should be proud of our home team and we should not settle for a watered down WAC. We have come too far to go backwards. Going independent isn’t a bad thing. Like I said, the football landscape will continue to change. The Big East is courting TCU. If they bolt, the MWC would have lost BYU, Utah, and TCU, the 3 biggies. What you have left in the MWC is like being a WAC conference.
Just win baby, JUST WIN
I think the key thing to Boise Success is obviously not only the players they have but Chris Peterson. He takes what they have an schemes around them he’s a brilliant coach an I think as long as Boise has him they’ll always be consistent. He’s 1 hell of a coach!!!
Chris Petersen will be the next coach of either the Oregon Ducks or OSU Beaves. It’s no secret that he wants to return to the PAC eventually. Once he does that, Boise will go back to being like everyone else. Should Kelly be offered another high profile job in college football or in the NFL, Petersen is as good as hired.

Is it Saturday yet?
Sorta off-topic – didn’t this happen to Damien several years ago when they were supposed to play St. Louis?
http://rivals.yahoo.com/highschool/blog/prep_rally/post/Massachusetts-school-pulls-out-of-game-citing-si?urn=highschool-274799
if you ask me the key to boise state is chris peterson. he has built this program. surely, he took over for dan hawkins who got boise st off the ground, but, the former offensive coordinator expanded his influence when he was named the head coach and the rest is history.
he has made playing for boise state being a part of a legacy. his staff that he assembled resembles his mantras. so successful is he, that he has that little town in idaho buying in hook, line, and sinker.
chris peterson, “ask, and he shall receive, knock and the door is opened.”
his story should be told one day.
jm2375…#120. It almost did. The principal of Damien at the time was going to forfeit a game against St. Louis because we had too few players due to injuries and the Crusaders were, simply put, better athletes. However, the students, players, and alumni felt that we should not “turn tail” and “chicken out” playing our most hated nemesis even though they hold the upper hand in the win loss record at like 40 – 2 or something like that.
Anyway, the game went on and we lost badly. However, we had the pride to at least show up, play the game, and not give up.
Later that season, the principal at Damien, along with the AD pressed the issue with the other ILH schools (and later the HHSAA). After that season, the ILH developed the two division status. A year later, the HHSAA adopted the two division status and hence we had the birth of the Divsion I and Division II classes in Hawaii High School football. Damien played Aiea in the first Division II championship and St. Louis played Kahuku in the Division I championship….

Preview of the Warrior/Fresno game
#122
I remember that situation and I give props to Damien for standing up and playing with pride….it was a gutsy performance but I respect them for that.
#122
it was a cornerstone in the history of the ILH but it showed that the Monarchs did not retreat in fear, they stood tall and headstrong in the midst of adversity……the Christians did not run from the tigers in the Coliseum, David did not run from the Jolly Green Giant, General Custer did not run from the Micronesians, and the United States did not retreat when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor…such were the Monarch Men when they had to face the Lancers of St. Louis……
Kellen Moore has not lost a regular season game so far in his college career. He lost a bowl game against TCU as a redshirt Freshman. That is the kind of long-term performance that gets Heisman talk going.
I think that home loss that Boise had to BC was in their bowl game. Their regular season home record is nuts.
Peterson has had a great run at BSU but both Hawkins and Koetter had a great deal of success there too. Peterson inherited a pretty good team. Hawkins had three one-loss seasons before his last where they had road losses at Georgia, Oregon State, and Fresno (they still won the WAC).
Bulla:
your #125 got me rolling on the floor!!!!!!!!!!
Bulla – #122 – you been talking to Gramps again? 😆
😳 I mean #125.
#119
I think if he wanted to get back to the PAC 10, he would have done so by crossing the street and going over to Washington St. Well, not exactly across the street but in close proximity. But Wazzu wouldn’t be a bad choice seeing that they are down right now.
hmmmm. bulla #125.
you mean they were slant eyed germans who had some musubi as their in-flight meal??
This is what Pat Hill had to say about this saturdays game
Getting ourselves ready to play against a team that throws it as much as they do will just be a shift in gears,”We go from stopping the fullback and the quarterback and the pitch to stopping different options and combinations of routs with the University of Hawaii. Which will be great challenge for us.”
The Warriors are led by former Fresno City College star Bryant Moniz, who threw for 532 yards and four touchdowns in Hawaii’s home win over Louisiana Tech. Hill says stopping Moniz is a must if the Bulldogs want to get to 4-1.
“We’ve got to rev up the pass rush,” said Coach Hill. “We’ve got to do a great job in the secondary, making sure that we match up and play well in the secondary, and understand the routes and understand what they’re trying to do to us, the adjustments that we have to make during the course of the game. But the pass rush is going to be important.”
This is what I read they have a mention of QB Bryant Moniz an make lightly of what he’s done this season.
When last we looked at Ryan Mallett’s formidable passing yardage, he was No. 1 in the nation with has 1,438 yards in his first four games. That would put Mallett on course for 4,314 yards at the end of the season. As we noted a couple of weeks ago, Tim Couch holds the current conference record for passing yards in a season with the 4,275 yards he rang up in 1998.
A few things have changed. Mallett is now No. 5 in yardage overall after the bye week, but first among quarterbacks who have played four games. However, he has fallen behind Hawaii’s Bryant Moniz in ypg; Moniz has 373.8 (facing the defenses of the WAC) to Mallett’s 359.5.
We need to publicize any national level accomplishment by the team and our athletes– this is absolutely essential for our program to get anywhere.
If you see an article on the best college QB’s or Heisman candidates and they talk about being among the leaders in total offense, you want that article to state the Bryant Moniz of the University of Hawaii is the leader. That means getting press releases out on Moniz, Salas, Pilares, and any other athlete at or near the top of national statistics.
Recruits, TV networks, reporters– they simply are not going to know unless that fact is publicized.
The attitude of “just win” or “just play well” and people will find out is not reality. Reality is no one knows unless a sports information department is pushing that information out to reporters.
We don’t let the reporters know, then lots of stories about quarterbacks and total offense will be published and none will say anything about Moniz being number 1.
#133…too funny these syndicated know-it-alls. “…facing the defenses of the wac.” five games in to the season, we have only played one wac team, two were bcs teams, hah. what do they know?
Anybody remember the circumstances for Moniz’s three interceptions this season?
I thought one was a deflected pass.. the other a boggled reception.. the third? Or am I just dreaming?
One pass did not lead the receiver enough and the defender was able to make up ground to intercept the pass.
So, where is everyone watching the game this week??? Murphs??? TJs??? Buffalo Wild Wings??? Giovanni Pastrami??
#135… Al… For real! Plus, we played 6 QB’s in one game, or Moniz would’ve probably gotten even more yards.
Hi!
I tend not to pay any attention to what the talking heads have to say about UH. Whatever the empty heads have to say usually rings hollow.
(J)J,
The party stay at Murphy’s Buffalo Wild Pastrami Bar and Grill.
Stay in Papakolea next to “TAP DIS” MMA school.
😎
(J)J,
Nah but seriously I think some people are headed to Murphy’s. I dunno where I am going.
Also, don’t forget that Moniz supposedly got his bell rung in the USC game and missed part of the game.
Beautiful day here in the PNW!
Absolutely clear and cloudless blue skies. Temperature all the way up to the mid-60’s. A very slight breeze.
WOW! Hard to beat a day like today!!!
Well, unless you just happen to be on a beach. Surrounded by family. And, friends.
In Hawai’i.
Darn.
Made,
Two of them was against the Bucs and both seemed like forced passes.
One was a forced pass in tight man coverage on a slant and the other on a failed attempt at a post pattern in the red zone in zone coverage.
The Fresno game? I will be at home. Listening to the radio. Tsigh.
I’ve been interested in this recent update and looks like I will look for some additional infomation. You really interested me.
Bought the LeafGuard gutters through Costco late last week. Those guys are installing it today. Kind of dark outside and they are still working on it.
Must be exciting for them on the second story. Good thing it is not a wet roof.

The SkillsUSA region conference went pretty smoothly today. Only glitch was i forgot to take the blue adhesive dots for the voting delegates. Oh well.
Changing the subject I stumbled on this: Kinda funny>>>
Here’s a flyer that was circulated by the thousands early Wednesday morning on the campus of New Mexico State in Las Cruces, New Mexico:
Student Support For WAC Member School Suffers

And this on Ryder Cup Rainsuits
What happened? Here’s the prevailing view: Lisa Pavin’s weird design happened. She wanted names on the backs of the jackets and stripes on the pants and sleeves. Those accoutrements had to be embroidered, which meant, in effect, poking dozens of tiny holes into the fabric, rendering the rainsuits vulnerable in a downpour—and there were plenty of those last week (players were complaining as early as Tuesday about the rainsuits).
So why didn’t Sun Mountain explain this to Pavin? Supposedly the company did—there were more than 20 meetings between Sun Mountain and the Pavins—but in the end, Lisa got the design she wanted. And the U.S. team got soaked.
This after Mrs. Pavin was provided an “unlimited budget” to outfit the team.
Corey Pavin’s wife Lisa was responsible for outfitting the players and to her credit did a spiffy job on the form of the rainsuits – just not the function. (Apparently she had other apparel, or lack thereof, on her mind at the time.
The suits proved so ineffective that players had to be provided new gear straight from the Celtic Manor merchandise tent. Replete with the Euro team’s Ryder Cup logo and at a cost of $6,552.00.
While the U.S. media has been careful not to blame Lisa for her gaffe, you can guarantee that the tabloids will have a field day with her unfortunate misjudgment.
Not to worry Lisa, 99% of Americans don’t mind seeing millionaire golfers shiver out in the rain for two days. In fact, if I had to choose proper rain suits for the players or Lisa’s sexy mag cover photo, I don’t think I’m alone in selecting the latter.

i thought this was a really great post to read. i’ll check back for new posts by you!
#138 (J)J – Giovanni Pastrami, how are they? Heard the food is really good. Still not sure where to go. So what Gramps where you headed??
Kinda late but
36 dcwarrior: NO, UH want PPV thru Oceanic – UH gets paid GamePlan ESPN is free only they make the money.
But will be Shown on KFVE 9:30PM Saturday Ch 5 “Hawaii at Fresno State”
This event blacked out by Oceanic on ESPN so calling GamePlan may not work
This is because the event that you requested is not available on ESPN3 in your market.
Blackouts apply to broadcasts that have been sold regionally or locally per league, conference and local rights holder agreements. Regional and local rights holders are usually broadcast stations or regional sports networks. Blackouts are implemented to protect the primary rights holder, as defined by the professional and college sports leagues or teams in a given market.
So all you Warriors fans cough up and watch on PPV. Ch #1255 in HD
We’re having a Pot luck tailgate party at 4:00 PM at our house.
But I also have Satelite and able to get feed of the West coast channels when needed.
Go Warriors.

Interesting post by Okole Maluna.
Interesting in the FACT that while the remaining WAC schools (Idaho, Utah State, NMSU, LaTech and SJSU) may NOT match up to UH in several sports, the fan support is NOT that much different with regards to mass perception in their respective markets.
Now, a student made that flyer I assume, but what’s LOWER is when several HPD officers thought it was funny to make up a fake report about a mysterious white substance on Ching Field.
For those that DON’T remember, it was last season during the 6 game losing streak when essentially HPD officers made reference to the white chalk on the goal line as something UH would never encounter again.
Now, of the above, tell me which incident lacks the most class considering the individuals responsible for the pranks???
Now Graves is penciled in to block on KO on special teams, gutsy move, Tormey is parlaying one of our future qbs as Sampson’s blocker.
Who did Graves tick off to get that duty???
Ah okay.. so two bad or forced passes for interception and one in/out of hands of the receiver from 198 attempted, with 131 completed and 15 TD …
This is pretty outstanding.
Is our depth still too shallow to fill out the Special teams with solid players?
Pat Hill says the pass rush is real important for Fresno State. To that I would say, the pass rush would be real important for Hawaii too. We have to pressure Fresno St. QB Ryan Colburn or he will pick us apart. It has to both ways. It will come down to who makes the most “big” plays. We cannot turn the ball over and give Fresno St. a short field. We cannot give up big plays on special teams. We have to turn that around this week and improve our kickoff and punt return yardage ourselves. I believe John Hardy-Tuliau will come up big this week. As long as Moniz is on target and our receivers makes the plays we will be alright. But, the big key in this game as always for Hawaii is our offense line. We have to give Moniz time to try and he will pick them apart.
I think this is approaching the likes of the Wisconsin game in 2009.
FSU doesn’t have the talent corps Wisconsin does, but the same. FSU running game is not like before but we have issues there and our secondary is most likely suspect to play action and considering Colburn’s #s, we could get bitten pretty hard if we cannot stick our defensive assignments.
I’d say we can always out score them, but the defense needs to get off the field before that even is considered.
Why we might lose:
-Special Teams
-Lack of pass rush.
Why we might win:
-Boneheaded decisions by FSU coaching staff (see 2008 game film)
-Pure offense. Last team on the field with possession wins.
Final score:
UH 0
WAC Officials 6.
Good evening Tsaiko Nation,
UH is LOST as they come as I have been told by upper campus
to not recruit students for Hawaii. It seems that UH admissions
office do not want their alumni talking on their behalf to interested
students in which their HIGHER brass wants to do all communications.
All they want from me is to volunteer my time and give out interest
cards at their selected College fairs to students and direct any questions
they may have to their proper admissions personel. How on earth are mainland
young students are going to choose UH if your people are THOUSAND miles away
and you have your ALUMNI directly here to service any questions and needs BUT
your University won’t allow you to do that !
Simply INCREDIBLE on the NEANDERTHAL thinking process that upper and lower
campus has as I am a MUTE with upper campus and a VIOLATION with lower campus.
With this type of attitude you can’t get NO athletic or academic studs as mediocrity
is where University of Hawaii is going and the PEOPLE who you have making decesions
are so “close minded” as I am sad writing to you that ALL my efforts in recruiting for
UH is just a waste of time !
There will be NO high school studs coming from Los Angeles as this last message has
let me know that the thinking process of LEADERS at Manoa are sad and pathetic. One
thing for sure they have no problem coming to you for money as phone calls or mail letters
come daily BUT no lunch invite, gas reimbursement or even a PLAQUE just to show apprecation to your dedication and service.
I tried good folks but the writing is on the wall as I had it GOING the past months with
establishing UH at prominent academic and athletic high schools BUT

Rainbow Cliff . . .
Thanks for all of your effort. Some of us appreciate it!
Just the typical island provincial mentality we have all seen and/or experienced all too often. That is part of the reason some of choose to move away.
Nytal!

SAD, VERY SAD INDEED !
Please excuse post #165 and #166 as I don’t know how it got posted twice.
Rainbow Cliff,
Probably they are afraid of a Reggie Bush situation
where Alumnai help too much…
But man, I was so happy for what you “were” doing
for us. God bless you (and HE will…).
I see we have a verbal commitment from California for a PG to Hawaii. 6’4″ for Morningside HS. Where are the commitments for football? What is Lumpkin doing? He’s the recruiting coordinator. And who are the grayshirts? I had heard there are 14 of them. That much?
Cliff, there are NCAA restrictions on alumni recruiting HS athletes. This has been mentioned to you on this blog in the past and you should know better. Why would you want to put your beloved alma mater at risk with the NCAA??? Your ridiculous rant is silly and sadly becoming typical.
#168 wafan: I tried kind sir as UH has it’s own agenda.
Derek,
Garret posted an article or something with regards to that. Essentially it noted that the past recruiting pace set forth by Tony Tuioti cannot be matched with the individual in charge of it now.
Pretty much, it is what it is… 🙁
BTW, isn’t Coach Gib in Cali right now?
BigH –
I don’t think Cliff was talking about recruiting. He just wants to answer questions that interested high school students might ask. Evidently, he’s not allowed to do that. If all he – and other – alumni can do is pass out interest cards, it seems like a waste. Who better to talk about the experience than an alumni?
BIG H ! we are talking about recruiting STUDENTS for academics period.
D
A little report about the “Fresno State” I think its Fan made! http://bleacherreport.com/articles/484426-fresno-state-football-six-thoughts-leading-up-to-their-match-up-with-hawaii
BIG H ! we are talking about recruiting STUDENTS for academics period.
Don’t have rants and sadly your comments are typical of the negative viewer.
A article talking about how Fresno will always be 2nd to Boise St. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/481949-fresno-state-football-will-they-always-be-second-best-to-boise-state
Mahalo Ronnie as you are absolutley correct !
“With this type of attitude you can’t get NO athletic or academic studs”
“There will be NO high school studs coming from Los Angeles”
“as I had it GOING the past months with establishing UH at prominent academic and athletic high schools”
Cliff, these are your quotes. Apparently I wasn’t the only one to read into them that you were also interested in recruiting athletes.
Alumni = Alumnai=Alumnae…
I type the way I hear the word…
Sorry if I offended any English profs.
#172 Ipu Man: Thank you sir as it was truly an experience !
Ipu Man,
It’s not alumnae or alumni. The correct term is:
“Da kine dat wen (insert school name).”
IF…, and I do mean IF with a big capital “I” and “F,” our Special teams don’t get penalized in the red zone and don’t allow for the big play on kicks, then this game will a battle in the red zone by the first team defense and offense.
Whichever team can score more often in the red zone will win. Statistically Fresno looks to have the clear cut advantage here with a #48 ranking of 7 rushing and 8 passing TDs along with 3 FGs. UH is #84 with 4 rushing 7 passing TDs and 8 FGs.
Warriors will need to win the turnover battle.
Tanks Kazz…
das wot we all need…
laughter
Ipu Man,
Make no mistake about it. For sure I am laughing.
Made,
John Madden replied to my email about who he thinks will win the UH and Fresno game.
Damn…. I should have known!
BIG H, the athletes were ALL contigent on Hawaii getting involve as
of course I made NO CONTACT in trying to recruit them but watch
with a keen eye for talent.
Upper campus I was representing at their college fairs for academic
purpose with the HOPES for UH to get establish athletically. The schools
I concentrated on had good academic and athletic students. A win win
for upper and lower campus.
More laughs…
“I didn’t go to college, but if I did, I would have taken all my tests at a restaurant because the customer is always right.”
-Mitch Hedberg
#177 Ronnie: Not only students had questions but the H.S. College
counselors were excited to know that UH could be a higher learning
institution for their graduate seniors.
Upon visiting their H.S. College Centers ALL schools had their college pennants
hanging from their perspective ceilings all but UH. Left message with admission
office to hopefully they will get UH visible.
Kazz,
Madden… never wrong…
Good night folks and pleasant dreams !
Moniz is at # 40, with 68 votes. c’mon gang, vote.
#163…Derek…i agree that in order to put enough pressure on Fresno’s QB we have to blitz on passing downs using Brown and/or Tuliau…if we go with a three man front – they’ll eat us for dinner…Hopefully, our DA can come up with some scheme’s to help us get to the QB…
The offensive line is key for us…can they match the physical throw down with the hush puppies – I think we have the talent…now, can our coaches get them PUMPED to play hard, smart and PHYSICAL?
…wish our D-linemen would get their hands up more to at least try and disrupt the passing lanes even if we can’t get the sack…
…correct me if i’m wrong…but i just don’t see it.
Does Fresno use “tight ends” on offense?
They luv to sneak out to snatch a pass for dramatic first downs.
RainbowCliff,
Thanks for the effort. U da man in my book!
Rainbow Cliff’s efforts contribute to UH budget.
As he once said, he recruits non-athletes, too,
who pay their way onto campus. Probably his
efforts was worth million$ over the years…
#134 Manoa,
Umm one of the main reasons why our boys don’t get the publicity has been the fact that we haven’t won against any notable opponents when given the chance on national TV. Yeah we’ve beat a few but not consistently enough nor have we really beat the powerhouse schools. Of course the ESPN’s and such aren’t going to jump on the UH bandwagon until some consistent quality wins prove otherwise. People will notice when you consistently win…I mean seriously did anyone know Boise State really had a football team??? It wasn’t until they started winning in dominant fashion consistently and then beat Oklahoma, that people started taking notice. The mentality of winning and not just playing well but dominating is an attitude our UH football team needs to have! If not, we could have Peyton Manning or Drew Brees on our team and no one would care unless they were winning football games. Bryant Moniz and the boys have to just keep being dominant and winning. I bet if we were undefeated it would be a different story talking about the Spam attack getting recognition.
I hope Rolo prepares the O for the mad dawgs of Fresno who plan to do great harm to our QB. Everyone from the receivers to the runing back has to do their job.
Braddah Cliff,
Your hard work is always appreciated by us Tsaikos. It’s just to bad that UH can’t appreciate there own alumni for trying to promote UH to others. If it was me and I felt that passionate about something then I would continue to do what I am doing even if it is not appreciated because in the grand scheme of things, good deeds will come back two fold. That’s just the way things go. Good deeds will never go unnoticed even though your alumni seems to not need your services even if it’s on a voluntary bases.
Anyway braddah keep up the good work and just continue to share your good will with others.
Brown, Tuliau and Huen seem to have the best knack for making plays behind the line of scrimmage. Corey is Corey, makes plays all over the field. Hope the coaches can put them in position to make some big plays that could turn the game. A sack, any type of blocked kick or a tackle behind the line.
Last year FSU blocked a FG attempt on our first possesion. That kinda set the tone for the rest of the game. We never recovered from that and played poorly the rest of the way.
Pauoa Boy,
No doubt. Consistency is the cure all. If we can show that we can win and win consistently, that will be our biggest publicity. Win against the big boys and that will be icing on the cake.
Rolo has his bag of trick plays. He may or may not pull one out. Got a feeling Tormey may have a couple of tricks up his sleeve that he’ll use in this game.
No doubt this will be a very big test for our defense. They will pound it down our throat and keep pounding down our throat. Our defense will have to come out with constent intensity the whole game and will have to bang like they have never banged before. We need to be gap responsible and we need to fill those gaps strong. If we can do that, we will have a good chance of winning. If we lose contain or over shot our gaps then we will be in big trouble.
We will see what happens.
RainbowCliff,
You da Man! Without supporters like you, dedicated, hard working and without need for recognition/compensation, the UH will never be successful. They will forever remain mediocre. The manini mentality of some in Manoa is both debilitating and short-sighted at best. I applaud your efforts and support the sincerety of your loyalty to the University of Hawaii.
Respect is earned. We haven’t earned it yet. Who have we beaten in the last three years?
Weber State
Fresno State
Louisiana Tech (Twice)
Nevada
New Mexico State (Twice)
Idaho
Washington State (Twice)
Central Arkansas
Utah State
San Jose State
Navy
Army
Charleston Southern
Who have we lost to?
San Jose State
Utah State
UNLV
Louisiana Tech
Fresno State
Idaho
Nevada
USC
Colorado
Florida
Oregon State
Cincinnati
Notre Dame
Boise State (Twice)
We need to show consistency at winning. We need to show balance in our play.
A bit of evidence that our win last week did make some impact is that we are on ESPN3 this week.
HAWAII vs FRESNO STATE Saturday, Oct. 9 10:30 PM/ET
Hopefully they won’t cancel.
I think Davone Bess did more for the UH program this week than winning against LaTech.
By the way, congratulations to the Bess family who welcomed a new member to the clan on Monday. Welcome to the world Kingston Bess, hopefully you are already dreaming in green, Warrior green.
RainbowCliff,
Just keep in mind that upper campus is always worried about legal and liability issues. Don’t make promises, say you’re a representative of the school, or anything that might be borderline. They have to tell you to stop in case you start making crazy promises or something. So don’t stop encouraging others to consider Hawaii for their college of choice. Keep up the good work.
I wonder if RCliff had avoided posting here all of the time describing his efforts caused Upper Campus to send him that letter of cease and desist.
Would Upper Campus would have even known or found out? I personally would have no clue. If he just kept it to himself instead of standing on his soapbox here then perhaps the situation would be totally different. Instead RC chose one of the most popular UH Athletics Blogs to share what he was doing.
You always hear “actions speak louder than words” but it’s flipped around to “Rainbow Cliff’s words were too loud for his actions”
Thanks, I’m shocked there are not more replies
Like the subject says- Where is the Love?
Nothing but love, guys.
Nothing but love.
Go Warriors!
I’m watching the replay of the Army-Temple game on the CBS College Sports Network channel (Oceanic) and the crawl on the bottom recognizes Moniz #1 in Passing and Kealoha & Greg #2 & #3 in Receiving. So, we’re getting some exposure on national TV.
Congratulations to the Bess ‘Ohana!!!
Great blog! I actually love how it’s easy on my eyes and also the data are well written. I am wondering how I might be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your rss feed which really should do the trick! Have a nice day!
Regarding #210.
By comparison, during that same time period 2008 – 2010:
Boise State lost one game:
TCU
TCU lost three games:
Oklahoma
Utah
Boise State
Utah lost three times:
Oregon
TCU
BYU
Alabama lost twice:
Florida
Utah
We need to show that same type of consistency to be able to get recognition nationally. Until then, we will just be a regional team.
We need to show that same type of consistency over the same period of time
pride. those are incredible numbers.
What ever else you might say about Rainbow Cliff, don’t forget that two of his passions are the underpriveledged inner city kids he has served for most of his life and the University of Hawaii.
He has the best of intentions for both.
Excellent points pride.
Are there any plans for a gathering before the Fresno State game?
My brother and I are planning to drive to see it. Also, what seats/
section do people plan to sit in? [I don’t believe we’ve gotten our
tickets yet…]
Thanks,
Lyndon (flying to Bay Area, then driving to Fresno)
Pride
RE #220…
When you put it that way.. it’s really rather humbling, eh? UH is in no position to demand anything, and any sparkle we may have might just rub off…
DANG! We gotta fix the special teams units!… FAST… Beef up the Defense.. get all parts of the Warriors team chugging along line a fine tuned machine. If not, this machine will freeze and stop running
I_Oku — UHAA has two events planned (one in San Jose Friday night and a tailgate in Fresno). Our Tsai-kos attending the game may have the same or similar plans. Links to the UHAA events and the Tsai-kos in the area are at:

I’m beginning my personal web site to share my images experiences. Do you come across it difficult or effortless to article consistently?
RAINBOW CLIFF: There are always naysayers on this blog who don’t do anything else harp on other people’s efforts or comments.
If they would only do something positive – give generously to Na Koa or UH in any form or fashion instead of jumping on people who make the effort to publicize UH.
RainbowCliff – you are No Ka Oi in my book. We appreciated your tireless efforts in not only promoting the University, but also the entire State. Your enthusiasm and passion is second to none. Keep up the good work….and maybe, in the future, keep it on ‘the down-low’ – as upper campus officials read the WB on a daily basis.
Nitey nite and Tsweet Warrior go under the radar and whomp Fresnecks Dreams!
Rainbow Cliff, I too am proud with what you do for the inner city kids of Southern California! And very proud that you represent your Alma Mater with great passion and gratitude! Although it seems your efforts have fallen on deaf ears in manoa, it hasn’t gone unnoticed here in this blog! Keep the faith, your actions and passion will be rewarded one day when that kid you helped comes back to say thank you!!!
if david graves is the future…why then are we risking him on the kick return team? especially as the first upback from the primary returner…translation he is the blocking back on kick off return teams.
what?
Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.
Rainbow Cliff
have a great day brother. keep smiling and doing what you do. its appreciated!

It isn’t a rule, it’s just my opinion. But I think that it is important to be in the top 50 nationally in six categories. Being in the top 50 in most categories gives you good balance as a team. Don’t ask me why? I’m not sure how it works or why it works, but it does.

Stats are good indicators of where a team is at any given time. Of course most Hawaii fans didn’t need the stats to show them where the Warriors need the most improvment.
RainbowCliff… You ask for literature and paraphernalia to distribute to those high schools, and all Manoa can do is tell you to stop? That’s pretty stupid. What they should have done is contacted you in person (either via emails or phone) to set boundaries that they can live with. I am sure nearly every school around the country (big and small) have alumni working behind the scenes in a voluntary capacity to promote their schools. I can understand the worry they have when it comes to the NCAA and possible infractions, but if all you are doing is setting up shop and passing out info, and not making promises of any kind to any of these kids on behalf of the UH, what’s the harm? You are not there in any official capacity of the UH.
All they need to do is compile a guidebook for any volunteer, with regards to admissions, courses, dorms, etc. at UH. If the answers to those kids’ questions aren’t in the guidebook, THEN they can contact the UH about it. Prior to sending out a guidebook, they could send you an agreement in which you are only allowed to do certain things. I mean, they complain of lack of funds… they should come up with a plan to make use of enthusiastic volunteers like yourself. Their shortsightedness is problematic of our whole state.
Just my thoughts.
#199… Ipu Man… one name off of the top of my head that always gave us a headache… Fresno State’s Bear Pascoe. Actually, it doesn’t matter who we play… if they have a tight end, we have to pay attention to him. Yes, we might work against one in the Scout Team, but on a daily basis, we ourselves don’t line up with a tight end, so it might be easier to overlook. We can’t let them sneak out during game time.
A lil update would be more helpful for u guys check this out http://bleacherreport.com/articles/484426-fresno-state-football-six-thoughts-leading-up-to-their-match-up-with-hawaii
many cmments would be for u and lil may be not but all the way end the article is really nice one.
Good morning folks of Tsaiko Nation !
MAHALO to all the positive bloggers on my efforts in supporting UH as
I appreciate the kind remarks. I choose to tell you folks what I do because
this is only the communication forum I have with Hawaii and I share it with you not
to BRAG or toot my horn but share my efforts on trying to help you good folks so that
Hawaii can have GREATNESS in both academic and athletic students PERIOD !
There was never no “ceast and desist” letter as what was e-mailed to me is
the effort is appreciated BUT we have our own agenda on how we recruit students
and all we want from you is only VISIBILITY and to man our selected college fair
tables as our designated personal will intervene from there with questions and concerns
from students, parents and high school administrators.
EVERYTHING else as far as potential was on my part as I tried as any insightful loyal alumnus would
do to go further to really help UH and get them on the level with BIG TIME schools so that
the very best will not only consider the Florida’s, USC’s and Alabama’s but University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors !
Upper and Lower campus do not work together. Both have their own way on how they operate and when you have a house that is divided it reflects on the product that you
see today with lack of funding and poor alumni support just to name a few.
Ego’s from my observation plays a big part in UH decesion making and until that change with
new fire that thinks “out side the box” then what Michigan Warrior states is very true shortsightedness and problems will be Manoa down fall.
To the naysayers who sit back and criticize I hope you are doing your very best to help
UH IF not shame on you as it takes ACTION, DEDICATION and MONEY to get your beloved
Hawaii up there with the very best as ponting fingers and shouting insults are not solving the problem but adding to the problem.
In concluding I am not sad but “VERY PROUD” as I met some outstanding administrators and young students who through my excitement of words wants UH as their choice of higher learning as a 176 interest cards in a hour in a half with ALL information gone is truly a remarkable accomplishment BUT in order to make that happen the INSPIRATION has to come from the HEART of the individual who represents you good folks in the highest degree !
Will ALWAYS keep spreading good will and do my very best for Hawaii as being in the championship game and losing hurts very bad BUT getting there and TRYING makes me
work that much harder to overcome the CHALLENGE of being successful for EVERYONE who
supports University Of Hawaii !
Have a GREAT morning Tsaiko Nation and continue in supporting your WARRIORS !
Go, Cliff, Go!!!
Pride:
We used to be able to stop some good running attacks under Mac with JJ was the coach. I think Fresno State will be a good test for this defense.
I’d rather see Graves blocking from the RB position than the kickoffs. Not that we don’t already have two good RBs, but I always like a little mischief in the backfield. I think that is one of Boise State’s keys.
Good morning my “MAIN MAN” Michigan Warrior !
You kind sir are the “VERY BEST” as I truly enjoy reading your posts.
Your knowledge is “SUPER DUPER” and your LOVE for UH is absobed by
this reader who appreciates your insightful thoughts and wisdom !
Looking forward in meeting you ONE day and sharing the wealth of ALOHA !
Also, a GREAT morning to Curt, Ipuman, kamakrab, hawnstln, the “punchbowl kid”,
diogenes sinope, pc warrior and bighilofan2 as your KIND WORDS of APPRECIATION
is duly noted from this old rainbow warrior who is still trying to give his all !
MAHALO for your GREATNESS !
By the way, Gerry Blakes of Morningside HS is the first-known player to orally commit to UH and Coach Arnold for the 2011-12 season, according to Brian McInnis in today’s article, “Blakes commits to UH hoops”.
Mahalo, Cliff!
Not only that I grew up with UH because of the interest displayed by so many of my older relatives, but it was also their loyalty in supporting the school throughout good and bad that taught us to be unwavering in our support. This, compounded by the fact that I’ve spent the majority of my adult life away from home, makes me crave reconnection with home and anything related. The University of Hawaii is a great way to keep connected, whether we are from there, schooled there, stationed there, or whatever other reasons people may have. That being said, we all just want the best for UH. That’s also why we all get so frustrated when things don’t go as planned, or as common sense dictates. But, after it’s all said and done, we’re still here, waving our flag and soldiering on…
spreading our aloha, and hoping and praying for the best.
Aloha, my friend! Keep doing what you do!
Great job by Gib Arnold as Morningside H.S. is right in my back yard from the Wooten Center. The way he is going then Inglewood, Crenshaw, Fremont, Washington and Westchester are not far behind as FINALLY action is coming my way !
Rainbow Warrior Basketball is BACK !
Michigan Warrior Will Keep Doing What I Do Kind Sir !
I am off to the wild blue yonder of LA spreading the ALOHA SPIRIT !
Have a GREAT day !
I hate to be the downer, but it doesn’t matter if UH wins the next two games to get Moniz attention. The problem is ESPN hyped up Colt saying how great he was, but he did it against crappy competition. Well those experts were right when Colt played the best defense in the country and got his butt handed to him. So now all the experts don’t want to hype up any QB that doesn’t play top notch competition every Saturday. Unless UH wins the WAC, Moniz will probably never get much attention. The same cannot be said for Pilares and Salas. Davone showed that he can put up big numbers in college and the pros, so I think that helps the UH receivers.
On a side note, I thought McMackin was suppose to be our defensive minded head coach. Why doesn’t he take over the play calling for the defense, the same way June took over on the offense? Coach McMackin use to be a blitzing like crazy kind of defensive coordinator, but not so much anymore. It looks like he lost his fire for defense.
#229: Please excuse me Curious George as I left you out unintentionally.
Your words of encouragment is GREATLY appreciated !
Love your blog name as when I was in elementary read Curious George
books with a PASSION !
Have a WONDERFUL morning and mahalo for your GREATNESS !
RainbowCliff never forget it’s all about the kids… Also as you are a booster they will be very strict on what you can and cannot do. The big problem is that as a booster you are not allowed any contact with high school student athlete’s, now how that applies to the academics side I’m not sure, could be they would rather error on the side of caution when it comes to boosters and kids.
I’ll tell you one thing, had what happened in the Bush case been at UH the NCAA would have given us the death penalty not just a slap on the wrist, different standard’s for different schools, go figure.
Main thing is you continue supporting the student athlete’s here and there!!
Great Morning All!

Now ain’t that the pot calling the kettle black.
My experience with is the power of plain old people using it.
So, I’m still a little fuzzy on why it is ok for the NCAA and each institution to make millions off of the talents of the student-athlete and then complain when they make $5000 when in school. Make the schools make the sports non-profit and donate ALL profit to a scholarship fund and I might be with it. By the way most sports have limited scholarships by the NCAA to promote fairness which is really contradictory to their purpose of supporting student-athletes. If a school wants to give 10 extra scholarships to baseball they can’t because of the NCAA. That means ten more students have to pay. The system is completely broken from typical student perspective and all anyone here cares about is that a couple of kids made a few bucks. Pathetic

There you have it – a straightforward way of getting a great but also that was kind of simple.
Hurray for caring about Mother Earth. The cool thing about converting to solar energy is that you can do it a little at a time if you want to. One of the best sources in checking out all the options is the magazine Mother Earth News. This magazine has been around for as long as I can remember and have hundreds if not thousands of articles about solar energy projects. A good library will probably have back issues and I imagine you can go on line and get some article straight from the source if you are so inclined. As with any project it is the proper installation that is key in making the project worthwhile. So you either do it yourself, right, or hire people who have many years of experience in doing these types of installations. You might also be interested to know that the government gives very nice tax right offs for folks who convert to solar energy and some states can be very generous indeed. So check out all your different sources both on line and at the library to get the best information you can. Enjoy the process it is really fascinating overall.
I was very pleased to find this site.I wanted to thank you for this great read!! I definitely enjoying every little bit of it and I have you bookmarked to check out new stuff you post.
While I don’t have one I’d like one. But I don’t see it replaceing your vacuum sweeper for getting out the dirt. It is strictly an inbetween vacuuming item; and picking up lint or crumbs and stuff that the kids spill. Handy, but not for heavy cleaning.
By far the most concise and up to date information I found on this topic.
Sidekicks heartlessly believe that it’s OK to ignore for now.
good morning, I sent an e-mail to you about this post, its not coming thru for me. Can you get in touch with me when you get a chance.
It’s everything here exactly what I was looking for 🙂 I’m so happy that I step in right here.
Sometimes I just think that people write and dont really have much to say. Not so here
For those that live in the hot weather areas, it always appears as if the warmer weather creeps up on you. Not many people are prepared for the heat, but a not bad way to avoid the heat and be able to enjoy the activities of every day life is by having a central air conditioner unit. Many people have a hard time when deciding to go with a whole house unit or a window unit. It seems like it’s going to be a hot summer, let me know if you need help picking out a central air conditioning unit!
Go for it. I am sure that you will find it fascinating. Begin by finding other members of the tribe, and ask them how to proceed. I am not familiar with "cheekee" — do you mean Cherokee?
You should also spend the time to call upon the support of those around you. Not only can these individuals provide support for you as you experience the emotional turmoil of a break up, but they can also act as your calm head, your sensibility, and they can mediate things between you and your ex.
Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
This is my subsequent visit to your weblog. We are starting off a brand new move within the same niche as this website. Your weblog provided us with important information to work with. You have done a splendid job.

The between Propane grills and Charcoal grills is hotly debated by folks who love steaks for the grill. To raise the barbeque wars we have set out the pros and cons of any propane gas grill verse a charcoal grill. Both gives you barbeque flavor however, many swear that charcoal grilling is superior when it comes to the flavors test.
“We could have been set back an entire week waiting to get the right part if that happened,” Lukas says. The program creates accurate up-front estimates because you know every piece you’re going to need for a repair—and that greatly reduces opportunity for error.
But, this seems rather authentic.

(My client has an Acer 4810TZG laptop running Win 7 Home Premium) Win 7 and IE are fully up to datre. If I run IE and then close it down, the shortcut icons on the desktop no longer ligp in response to the mouse / trackpad, nor do the shortcuts work. However shortcut icons in the taskbar continue to work normally. Likewise shortcuts from the Start Menu also work fine. The programs also once loaded work normally. If I drag an icon from the Start Menu onto the desktop it appears but it still doesn’t function. The only way to get desktop icons to work normally is to reboot!! Suggestions please?
