The Salt Lake Tribune posted the text of the loyalty agreement for the WAC. It sure looks to me that only $5 million total is owed by Fresno/Nevada since it is clear that once a school left the WAC no other school would owe the WAC any money if they left.

6. In the event that any current WAC member, (except Louisiana Tech or Boise State), or BYU leaves the WAC in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 5 herein, the terms of this resolution are terminated.

Seven guys, including a couple who can play multiple positions, is a good thing. They will be key!

The WAC needs to be more aggressive and proactive in pursuing legal action against leagues and teams which threaten it’s viability. Benson should at least have a legal comittee looking at the WAC’s options in that regard. This is supposed to be amatuer athletics, and is anything but!

To wax metaphorical with the Dean, its too easy to raid the hen-house when nobody guards the chickens!

I agree with ST. If there’s any way to stay in the WAC for football, that’s our best option, even if the conference lineup is down to San Jose State, Sacramento State, Utah State, New Mexico State, Texas State, UT San Antonio, and Louisiana Tech (which is unlikely to get a CUSA invitation). It will give UH a core schedule of seven games, around which it can add six games against attractive non-conference opponents. Now when it comes to non-football sports, I think we should move them to the Big West in a heartbeat if we get the chance.

But there has been a belief the Big 12 would like to see Colorado leave after this year with Nebraska so that the reconfigured conference could move forward.

That idea, however, has hit a snag because the Big 12 and Colorado can’t agree on a figure.

What is the impact to the state economy with the loss of the UH football program including visitors traveling with teams, hotels, meals, etc. (ala the Pro Bowl). I’m sure there is an impact. If so the loss of the UH football team is a state problem not only a UH problem. If so, support in $$ should come from the state to subsidize opponent’s travel, etc. to provide the UH a package to present to MWC for entry.

ST –many of us have recognized the game scheduling problems as an independent–esp. in late September through November…and especially if we want to remain D-1A. I drafted a future marketing/solicitation message to D-1A schools to schedule us if we were an independent. But I deleted it since it was in questionable taste.

Finding teams to play us in OCT-NOV is a serious challenge…and worse, it will be away games except for a few D-1AA’s we might coax here…yes plural D1-AA’s. Maybe my questionable taste will emerge later today after lunch. 😐

#84 Steve P, that can be addressed by balancing the weak conference schedule with a strong five or six game out-of-conference schedule. Even today, most of UH’s “marquee” games are out of conference: USC and Colorado this year, Washington and Oregon State next year, USC and BYU in 2012. If we go indy and have to play the majority of our games on the road, there’s a high risk of falling victim to a perpetual losing cycle, and that’s far more likely to kill the program than having to play UC Davis and UT San Antonio in conference every year.

In this great time of uncertainty for UH, hope all the “movers ‘n shakers”, where ever they are, are meeting as frequently as JD is on the phone in conversation discussing options.

I believe it’s fruitless to believe that USU and/or LaTech will not bolt for “greener pastures” in the next shake up. PAC 10 Presidents will not meet until October and this could swing the pendulum mightly.

Thus, the need to invite football team conferences or work on that “indy” status!!!!!!

Sitting around of course is not an option. Of course, when all of these conference realignments were going on and Boise got the MWC invite, I was concerned when Donovan’s response was something like let’s see and wait for the dust to settle. If that was really the case before, then I’m sure what has happened has woken many people up who had a similar line of thought. Unfortunately for UH, they were NOT fully prepared but is this surprising when reactiveness instead of proactiveness is the norm?

JJ knew while he was here that the football program needed to be a perennial top 25 program in order to position itself for the future when the shakeups occurred. Of course I don’t have to rehash the administrative screwups that took place which resulted in the loss of that head coach to another school. And while the PAC 10 may have been a pipe dream, we had decades to position the university both athletically and academically to make ourselves as attractive as possible. Every decade, we could have inquired and shown progress on both fronts. But the kind of leaders we have in Hawaii made that nearly impossible because they lack forwarding thinking vision and now the chickens have come home to roost where the options are severely constrained.

The late governor Burns had a vision in the 50s before he even became governor of seeing UH athletics competing at the highest levels. It was during the 60s once he became the governor when the planning began to upgrade UH from D-II to D-I, for a stadium to replace Honolulu Stadium, for that new stadium to be used as a selling point to get UH into a conference since even back then, there were people with enough vision to see that it would be a tough road of being an independent program at the D-I level out in the middle of the Pacific.

Now it looks like we are going full circle and in the exact opposite direction. Instead of progress, I see regression. And all of this is because of poor decisions and lack of true leadership over the previous decades by those who had the trusted responsibility to do so. And if you need to wonder why UH has trouble getting any sort of respect, its because those outside see these things that people too close to home tend to not see (the blinders on mentality). Our decisions look embarassingly elementary at times. We had a Heisman hopeful having to go on national television to announce the lack of soap in the locker rooms. We let the schools most winningest football coach walk away. We then have a rookie head coach too often times had trouble articulating himself and saying too many wrong things during the past two seasons.

Before we can EVEN ask or HOPE for help from the outside, UH and this state needs to get its own house in order first because that is why the athletic program finds itself in the position it is today. The WAC itself under the “lack of” leadership of Karl Benson also bears responsibility at that level. Half of the comments he has made since this whole thing went down aren’t even the full truth. IF the conference survives, he needs to be removed as commissioner because I for one, don’t have any faith in his abilities. Furthermore, if the conference survivies, it needs to amend its bylaws/member code of conduct. If the conference survives and UH remains as its senior member, any incoming member needs to agree they will not disparage Hawaii’s or any other members geography. If they have an issue with this, they need not sign up. And I know the conference at this moment cannot be choosy BUT really, there needs to be some level of respect and that tone needs to be set from the start from now.

As others have stated, part of being proactive is pursuing legal action against those parties which resulted in this damaged version of the WAC (the MWC, Fresno State, and Nevada). There has been a breach of fiduciary responsibilities which cannot be ignored when it comes to those conference members. This is more so important if the objective is to see the conference survive since a strong signal needs to be sent out that there will be legal ramifications in the future. While it may not seem the best tactic to take given the WAC’s current weakened state, a new tone needs to be set.

As far as UH making any sort of decision, what it needs to do is continue doing due diligence and actively working behind the scenes on multiple contingency plans. The UHAD needs multiple contingency plans because there is just too much in flux at the moment and UH won’t have time to dilly dally making key decisions when the next shoe drops. The PAC 10 meeting regarding Colorado and Utah is very much at play and not because it would benefit UH either way as all I see is a mad scramble by the MWC especially if they had lost BYU completely once that vote comes around in October. Personally, I’d like to see Cal, Stanford, and UCLA strongly oppose these two schools on the grounds of academic standards only for the hilarity that will ensue in watching these two schools AND the MWC have to scramble. More so if the MWC shoots at the hip again depending on what BYU’s September 1st decision will be (I kind of expect BYU to take its sweet time giving their response to all this positioning going on and I will chuckle if they give Thompson the middle finger for adding Fresno and more so, Nevada into the conference).

Regardless of whatever BYU does (and BYU will do what it wants to do in its own best interests and not for the MWC or any other institution), I highly doubt UH is in the Mountain West Conference plans except as an absolute last resort. Why? Well aside from the logistical issues of traveling and the time lost by student athletes, I still believe that commissioner Thompson (who has been there since the inception of the MWC) has a long memory with regards to what the then presidents of those universities might have been saying back then. Remember, it was then UH president Kenneth Mortimer who said NO to travel subsidies which shortly resulted in the original set of WAC defectors who went off and formed the MWC (I’m not justifying what those schools did as being right but from their point of view, that decision by Mortimer pushed them to do what they did). Maybe if the UH football team had taken care of business on the field the past two seasons, maybe Thompson would have had little choice but to put UH higher up on the list but as things stand now, no one (major conference wise) wants Hawaii and given what little we have to offer, we are in zero position to persuade anyone at this time.

Myself, I don’t have an issue with UH remaining in a neutered WAC initially so long as the premise is that business NOT go on as usual after that. Leaders in positions of leadership need to begin leading with forward looking vision. The university needs to change the way it does thing such that it can grow both academically and athletically. Going forward, UH athletic programs all need to take care of business; moreso the football and basketball programs. As these events have shown, winning in these two major sports is paramount. If events transpire that UH has no alternative but to go independent, then the UHAD also needs to send out a clear public message that community support will be needed. If those prima donna spoiled fans are only going to bitch and moan about weird game days/start times, fewer home games, increased ticket prices, other inconvenient aspects related to the challenges of scheduling as an independent, then maybe UH needs to reevaluate the future of the football program at that point. I don’t want to see it disappear but if the larger community isn’t going to support it, then maybe the money and effort would be better served elsewhere. In otherwords, if UH has to go independent, people out there had better put up or shutup if they want the football program to survive and not just be bandwagon fans that only show up at the stadium when the team is winning.

If the MWC teams don’t want UH in their fold because of travel expenses and distance problems…why would anyone think that teams beyond these parameters would want to commit themselves to a WAC conference?? Surely by now, we have learned a lesson from the original 14-16 WAC conference and the present scenario which no thought could get any worse….duhhhhh??

That’s why the very best deal would be getting into the Big West in all sports and taking our chances at going independant in FB….if independant FB don’t work out then at least all the rest of UH sports teams will have a conference to be associated with.

If BYU goes with the WCC in all sports except fb, it does not mean UH and BYU cannot schedule playing each other in the future, maybe every year infact.

Military leaders would set up committees.

Professional teams would look towards their group of consultants.

And what about UH? Is UH athletics in a crises?

Yes. And what about their leadership?

Has there been a committee formed by the athletic director in moving the athletic program in the right direction?

No.Not that I can see.

Why not?

Wouldn’t a committee of experts offer some insights , perspectives and guidance to the athletic director as the school fights through this crises.

Is it possible some good ideas could hatch? And be of help to the athletic director during these crossroads?

Maybe. Especially when you note that UH athletics is walking a tightrope where any decision will affect them either positively or negatively in the future.

Albeit at a much different level, some things are similar, I think to what Hawaii may face….

Southern Oregon plays at the NAIA level as an independent. As a perenially struggling program “out West” they constantly are challenged to complete a full schedule.

Last season they played three home games with the last one coming on Sept. 26…their Senior Night.

…they then had 5 consecutive road games and finished their season after the first week of November.

Agreed. If this was one of those schools that closes out practice to everybody something like this would never be known. Or if it is known, not until much later.

The offensive line is one of the huge question marks this season and given that we are going up against USC we do not need to be doing them any favors. USC now knows there is a potential that their nose guard may be going up against a 2nd or 3rd.

You hit the bullseye. Fan support makes the team, ask any big time program, or even ask Boise St. The whole city of Boise is behind their football team and look at their sucess….

I personally want Independence, but thats BIG BUCKS. The whole State of Hawaii NEEDS to put the effort and funding, from the governor down to the fans. Im sure ESPN might take a look at night games IF….IF we can pack that stadium EVERY game. Not just BYU, USC etc. ALL of em from Northern Colorado to Notre Dame.

My brother lives in the Bay Area, being a sports fan, he believes UH fans and government are not capable of the type of loyalty that a “big Time” programs need. He pointed out to me, watching a Hockey game live at the San Jose Sharks HP Pavillion… ” look at the fans, 3/4 of them have a genuine jersey on… you know how much those cost? He took an average of 15,000 people at $200 a jersey… 20,000 people sold out, $75 – $400 a ticket… well, do the math not including food,parking etc. for ONE home game…. Of course HP being a main corporate sponsor helps…

I would like to say that theres a lot of good ideas and great brainstorming on this blog. I asked the tsaiko bloggers a few days ago if UH had big resources like big time programs do, to no avail. My question is… If UH were to play BCS caliber teams with say a .500 winning avg (all games at least fairly competitive) would that be enough to keep the fans coming back? Or do you think UH fans are more interested in just “winning”? I believe that so long UH is competitive with BCS caliber teams, not necessarily winning all, they will have a good following, also keeping Hawaii talent in Hawaii. I personnaly find it hard to get exited over games like Charleston Southern, UC Davis, Northern Colorado,Western Alaska etc. year after year

Doesn’t surprise me at all. When Ne-Vah-Da and Fresno State left it was a foregone conclusion that BYU would drop the WAC as a parking spot for their other teams but no fear Hawai`i UH is weighing their options.

I just know a lot of fans are gonna call in and try to get Coach Shoji to say something about the Rainbow Wahine existing outside the WAC.

Jim Donovan has said publically he believes the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team CAN exist as an independent based on reputation, but I personally am not comfortable with ANY UH sport existing as an independent other than football and STILL have my reservations about that too.

For the 2011 softball season admission will be free again and we will coordinate with the appropriate people certain games where we will have the donation “buckets” around.

Of course those will not be the only opportunities for fans at the stadium to pass on some extra dollars for the softball program. We are planning several things including a donation table where fans can receive gifts in exchange for a donation to the program and such.

Going beyond the 2011 season, as far as we know, it’s a question mark. I attended a public session last year in which Carl Clapp presented to us their plan to raise the minimum they could charge fans for admission to games. This was presented to the BOR already and it was approved.

Essentially from what I undestood THEN, was that the non-revenue sports like softball, water polo, and soccer would not have admission for their games for at least another 3 years meaning it would be up for review in 2013.

Things change though, but at the same time, I don’t know if they would be able to charge for softball as early as 2012 if that were the case.

If the Wahine have a season like they did last year, they may speed up the process to have admission installed for 2012 though.

That is just my guess.

Personally when you look at the non-revenue sports that are spectator sports that have the potential to draw some sort of revenue, the potential lies with Wahine soccer and especially Wahine softball after the season they had last year.

Another fund-raiser will be held on Sunday, September 19, from 4 pm ri 6 pm in Kailua at a very familiar Tsai-ko location. Meeting up with the PL owner tomorrow afternoon to confirm the arrangements.

During those ceremonies for all the sports, I try to get a glance at the reactions of the players on the other team as they are watching our senior night/day ceremonies unfold.

Michigan Warrior – this past Saturday we collected over 60 incandescents in less than two hours. BTW – one of our key volunteers is a Michigan grad. He always shows up for community service projects wearing a Michigan t-shirt. He misses seeing hot & heavy – his words – games in both football and basketball; however, I think he married a local girl who really doesn’t want to live in snow & slush for four months every year.

Back to UH sports-related stuff: For those of you who live in Hawai`i and are registered voters, please take the time to talk to candidates running for the State House & State Senate. Many people – whether talking about elected officials or their constituents – do not grasp the important role that intercollegiate athletics plays in the overall economy. All they see/hear is $10 million Department of Athletics deficit and 17 furlough days and that’s enough for many of them to close the windows, turn off the lights, and shut the door on college sports.

You CAN make a difference, but you have to speak up now. Educating & informing is a powerful tool in getting elected officials to do the right thing.

Fortunately, Jim Donovan and Virginia Hinshaw are good at E&I, but the candidates need to hear from you too.

Watching Leahey & Leahey tonight reminded me of why I have always liked Dick Tomey – he is an absolute cheerleader and motivator. Made me feel optimistic about the future of UH foorball after all the depressing news of the past week.

Also it splits up the travel costs for all those schools, they don’t have to pay for both men and women. I think it might also help with tourism, alot more fans that might come for one game instead of choosing between sports.

Another player that has missed a lot of reps is Colt Brennan. But Brennan missed those reps because he was signed in the middle of camp. With Kyle Boller playing so well, and Brennan still learning the playbook, he has seen extremely limited time. He will see almost no time in the 49er game because the starters will play into the 3rd quarter and Bruce Gradkowski is healthy. Even Kyle Boller will only see about half the 4th quarter. The good news is that Brennan is eligible for the practice squad as he has never been active for a regular season NFL game. If he isn’t swiped up off waivers and is willing to join the practice squad, it would be a great thing for the Raider to have a player with his potential in the wings. And if JC, Grad, or Boller get hurt during the season, they can sign him to the active roster.

Sorry that I had to miss the clinic tonight, but by the time I added up the cost for gas, parking and “tuition,” it would have set me back $30.

Have to miss tomorrow’s Stadium Authority meeting because of the GREEN MARKET event. Nothing is on Authority’s agenda to indicate that there is any concern about the roiling turmoil going on in intercollegiate athletics and the impact on the future of Aloha Stadium.

Slugger- awww. Wish I coulda made it this year to meet Mr. Mouse. ! How was the turnout? Didnthey have hotdogs again?

Chad- I am a recent live-game fan and have always loved finesse football. My fave player of all time is Joe Montana. I still regret not taking myself to a ProBowl to see him play in real life. I did not repeat the regret and took myself to see Colt Brennan and the perfect season Warriors as often as I could.

Those games were unforgettable. I long to see Hawaii continue to play finesse football again.

If football is to have a future in this changing world, it needs to stop permanently damaging human beings before the prime years of life. That is my opinion. Purely smash mouth playing is not enjoyable to me. I guess it has to do with bad childhood memories. In any case, I still have nightmares about Colt getting beat up and beat down in the Sugar Bowl. A kill Colt Brennan defense was effective in stopping the Warriors but it did not feel very classy to me.

I guess I subscribe to the count coup way of battle rather than the bring a gun to a knife fight approach. Yeah, you may win, but was it skillful and honorable?

I think there were about 100 women in attendance. 5 groups with maybe 20 per group, or less.

I don’t think Mouse wanted to give us too much straight information. After all, it’s the week before the biggest game of our season. But he did explain some of the field routes: 90 Streak Balanced, that I understand.

The field drills were fun! If ST wants some pictures to post from the Wahine clinic, I’ll send a few & he can post, or not.

Met a few women who read the blog, but they don’t post.

We got to walk around the new offices on the third floor. Aranda was up there after they fed us hot dogs. He was working on defensive plays. Nice conference rooms! The softball coaches had mentioned yesterday that the renovations on their wing weren’t done. Yup!

Of course there are many perspectives to the WAC/MWC shakeup(down?)

Everyone seems to think they are getting the raw end of the deal:

The ultimate outcome of USU’s well-intended brokering of BYU’s original plan to the Western Athletic Conference in all sports except football could be serious damage to only the Aggies. They’re left in a weakened WAC, thanks to the departures of Nevada and Fresno State via the Mountain West’s response to the once-imminent loss of BYU.

At least one person in the “Valley” purports to have a conscience and some second thoughts about moving to the MWC.

I’m not saying it was the wrong move. It’s just what’s churning in my gut the more I think about it. Besides, staying in the WAC meant making a deal with BYU, a school that never had a friend it couldn’t ditch. It’s tried to dump TCU twice now.

The Cougars were only trying to leech off the WAC until they get to the Big 12, anyway. Part of the potential deal with the WAC should have been the stipulation that they change the mascot to the BYU Parasites.

So there was no great choice. The MWC even had the nerve to put out a news release as Fresno State was contemplating the decision, to turn up the pressure, so President John Welty would have to explain to his athletes and fans why he said no to joining the cool club.

“When you get into making these decisions, you’ve got to set emotions and feelings aside,” he told me. “You have to focus on what’s best for the university.”

He’s probably right. But it’s going to take quite a while for it to feel right.

Looking into what was behind the Pakistani Cricket team no-ball alleged scandal made me realise just how huge the cricketing industry is, uniforms, bats, balls, clothing etc. Billions of pounds are involved here. Surely the players themselves (without whom none of this enterprise could happen) need to be far better paid than they seem to be in order to remove any temptation on their part to scupper this enormous enterprise by, against all the rules of fair play on the pitch, beefing up their relative pittance of a wage by illegally betting and so gaining a small extra crust for themselves. How about more fair play to the players in the first instance? Pay them properly in the first place and the game wouldn’t have these problems.
