Brett Leonard injured

bl

Brett Leonard, who was poised to be named the starting center today, suffered what is being termed a “sprained” left knee during today’s practice. He was injured during a one-on-one drill. Leonard was wearing a knee brace at the time.

Leonard underwent an MRI today. Early indication, we’re told, is while he might miss a few practices, he should be ready for  the USC game.

Do not adjust your calendar.

Tomorrow is Tuesday. Friday is Tuesday, too. At least in UH’s football world.

In preparing for an upcoming opponent, the most important day is four days before a game, also known as “game-plan Tuesday.” On a usual Tuesday before a Saturday game, the Warriors will be shown the game plan during a one-hour video session. Then the Warriors will practice the game plan for an hour on the field. On a Wednesday, the game plan will be run at full speed. There will be full-speed drills, but less contact on a Thursday. Friday is the walk-through.

Because of the gap between the end of training camp and the Sept. 2 opener, the Warriors will have an expanded “game-plan Tuesday” tomorrow. They will watch a video presentation of the game plan in the morning, then practice at Aloha Stadium in the afternoon. The extra time allows UH to have two “Tuesdays” and two “Wednesdays” in preparation for USC.

By tomorrow everything should be solidified, from the offensive line to the battle at “joker” in the Okie scheme between Paipai Falemalu and Jake Heun.

* * * * *

The Warriors remain hopeful that right tackle Laupepa Letuli, running back Alex Green and strongside linebacker Aaron Brown will be able to resume practicing this week. Letuli has been bothered by an ankle injury suffered in Saturday’s practice. Green has abrasions from a non-football accident. Brown has not practiced since suffering an ankle injury the week before the start of training camp.

Apparently, the blog host believes it is OK to beat a metaphorical dead horse. But a week after Nevada and Fresno State pulled a LeBron, it appears UH is giving more and more consideration to going independent in football.

Again, I just think that should be more of a “due diligence” process than a to-do item. If the WAC further disintegrates, then, by all means, go independent in football. But that shouldn’t be an option under the current situation, even if the WAC is held together by Scotch tape.

To go independent means finding opponents in October, November and December. It means having ESPN agree to pay a lot of money to make UH a regular Saturday Night Live guest, while blacking out those telecasts in Hawaii to allow UH to get double-dip moolah from pay-per-view. Even Tiger Woods couldn’t pull off a have-it-all scenario.

Besides, being in a six-team WAC is better than being in a one-team league, which is what independence means. If a team is not playing for a title, as the Method actors would say, “What’s my motivation?” Hey, the KIF is happy with three teams. My brother and his friend Mark have been owners in a fantasy basketball league for about 25 years. They’re the only two owners in that league. Silly? Of course. But they’re having a blast because they’re competing for a title. When you’re independent, your primary goals are filling the schedule and balancing the budget. (New cheer: “You say Balanced, I say Budget, Balanced. Budget. Go Warriors!)” Are there any meaningful games in November?

OK, that’s it on that subject. I’m going back into timeout.

Waiting until the WAC further disintegrates will give UH too little time to get things ready to go independent. With Utah State and La Tech both trying to get out of the WAC as soon as possible, UH has to be prepared to move also. I’m glad that the contacts have been made with the Big West and WCC, so that UH understands its options if it needs to jump.

  3. Garret (traveling) August 25, 2010 6:08 am

Dragging this over from the last blog.

The Salt Lake Tribune posted the text of the loyalty agreement for the WAC. It sure looks to me that only $5 million total is owed by Fresno/Nevada since it is clear that once a school left the WAC no other school would owe the WAC any money if they left.

    6. In the event that any current WAC member, (except Louisiana Tech or Boise State), or BYU leaves the WAC in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 5 herein, the terms of this resolution are terminated.

  4. Garret (traveling) August 25, 2010 6:09 am

We already know that La Tech wants out of the WAC…it is interesting to read what the Louisiana media thinks about the WAC.

“It’s hard to see any scenario where this isn’t terrible news for Louisiana Tech,” said Monroe News-Star columnist Ethan Conley. “The WAC is left with Tech, Hawaii, Idaho, New Mexico State, San Jose State and Utah State. Or as the cool kids are calling it, ‘The Absolute Worst Conference In The Nation.’”

I read one thing that explains why Utah State would be such an important target for the MWC: apparently, their contract for the mtn network requires them to have a team in the state of Utah. With Utah leaving and BYU going independent, they need Utah State.

The mtn network gets something like $6 million or so in subscriber fees from Utah households and Utah is their highest rated TV market (important for advertising revenue). It appears that the MWC knows that BYU will be going independent and they need Utah State.

  12. Stephen Tsai August 25, 2010 6:17 am

There might not be anything in the WAC for the other UH sports, which is why it is even willing to pay travel subsidies to the Big West.

But UH needs to be in a football league, even if it’s a watered-down league. Five years from now, when UH is independent, we’ll all be asking: Why am I paying for a pay-per-view telecast of an October game against Wyoming that doesn’t mean anything?

  13. Hank August 25, 2010 6:17 am

BYU’s goal of going independent is to maximize its revenue potential from its state-of-the-art network and, possibly, to get to a BCS game.

UH’s goal of going independent is because it was the only one in the class not invited to the birthday party.

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

“Another player that has missed a lot of reps is Colt Brennan. But Brennan missed those reps because he was signed in the middle of camp. With Kyle Boller playing so well, and Brennan still learning the playbook, he has seen extremely limited time. He will see almost no time in the 49er game because the starters will play into the 3rd quarter and Bruce Gradkowski is healthy. Even Kyle Boller will only see about half the 4th quarter. The good news is that Brennan is eligible for the practice squad as he has never been active for a regular season NFL game. If he isn’t swiped up off waivers and is willing to join the practice squad, it would be a great thing for the Raider to have a player with his potential in the wings. And if JC, Grad, or Boller get hurt during the season, they can sign him to the active roster.”

  30. rage777 August 25, 2010 6:41 am

I think I have said enough about UH going independent in football, but I would like to say that UH would be lucky to get Wyoming scheduled if they go independent. I think there will be more Southern Charleston’s, Akron’s, Miami Ohio, etc than any notable teams.

As for UH going to another BCS bowl, that is way more unlikely than ever. Unless they go to a BCS conference and start playing non-FBS schools, it’s not going to happen anymore. We had our chance and blew it, even if we went undefeated everybody will say look at their competition and look what happened the last time they were in a BCS bowl.

If we do go independent in football, let’s just consider becoming an FBS school or dropping football. Do you really think ESPN will give UH a TV contract? Sure it might be good for them to get a Saturday night/Sunday morning game for some weekends, but every weekend? I really don’t see it happening. UH doesn’t have the appeal of other teams. Unless we start getting a few good years in a row and show people that UH football is good for a long time (see Boise State), ESPN will be out of the question.

  34. Buffoman August 25, 2010 6:47 am

Last gasp to save the WAC. If the thought was to save the WAC and make it legit, forget the Texas directional schools, or mini California and Montana.

JD should get on the phone to his counter part at BYU. They agree that both should be in and be the determining factors for the new WAC (just so they don’t kick UH out, really). Then they get on the phone and call Utah and Colorado and present them the, “what will it take for you to come in and help us re-establish the new WAC. If that means subsidies for travel, television ala Texas when they decided to stay in the Big 12. Do it.

With UH, BYU, Colorado and Utah as the nucleus of the new WAC, Nevada and FSU may say, oops, brain fart, what was I thinking and stay. That makes 6. BSU may then think, wow, they got juice in the WAC now, reneg, done it before, but make them pay to get back in (along with FSU and Nevada). Now you have 7. Cherry pick your 8th.

It’s an all in game or go independent as the watered down version of the WAC is doomed to failure. Either go big or go bust. Hey, even if the above laugh at you it was worth a shot, better to hear it then second guess it. UH has to look at options that say “future”. It may cost but hey, what’s the difference if the Pac 10 said come. They have to pay big time and we all know that is not going to happen. Why wait for the Pac 10 to decide Utah and Colorado’s fate. By proactive. The worse that can happen would be a negative response, which puts UH back to where it was. What’s the harm?

  35. postmanke August 25, 2010 6:55 am

ok Fox might not have not been in my hotel room.. but Spike TV was!

  36. Garret (traveling) August 25, 2010 6:56 am

    Buffoman,

Each Pac-12 school is looking at $15 million or so from TV and a conference payout of about $20 million to $25 million per year. The WAC’s entire TV deal comes out to $4 million per year and it will be decreasing. Forget about travel subsidies, how do the numbers work for Utah and Colorado to go to the WAC? The MWC gives its schools at least twice what the WAC gives its schools with lower travel costs and more natural rivalries.

  37. expat August 25, 2010 7:02 am

    Buffoman

I think Benson has a pretty good idea of “what’s the harm” after flirting with BYU. Someone spilled the beans and the MWC took him out behind the woodshed. There may not be much more harm that can be done… but does the (remaining) WAC really want to get into a pissing contest with the PAC-10?

  38. Buffoman August 25, 2010 7:06 am

Well my guess is that you’re saying (Garret) that the only recourse is independent. That’s fine. Have to look at options even if they are rediculous. The obvious (save the WAC with the weak) is such a poor option. Last point to the nutty idea, what if the PAC 10 presidents say, uhhh, well we really don’t want you (Colorado, Utah) as it has been rumored. Then what do they do? Go back to their respective conferences? What if instead of just doing it solo, ESPN joins in and does a whole new deal to feature the new WAC, does it make the thought more viable?

Sitting on hands just looking for sh_t to hit the fan got us here. Why not be outrageous? The result may still stink but at least by being outrageous you had some control on what and when the sh_t hit the fan as opposed to just waiting and being hit when least expecting.

    That’s more my point.

    ST right….

staying in the WAC, playing for Championships is what all the athletes wants to do, to play for something at the end. Stay in, add teams, and if we play to our BEST, year in year out, another conference would ask us to come join them. Thats what Im thinking….

  46. Michigan Warrior August 25, 2010 8:21 am

I think… us waiting for any news… is killing us more than anything else at the moment. And yet, we can’t act until we know what the landscape offers us.

I think we hold Fresno State and Nevada (and possibly the MWC) liable for damages and breach of contract (any tampering, or whatever the legal term for it is). But I don’t think we totally destroy or relationship with them, since they could possibly hold votes for us should their discussion lead to a possible invite for us.

In the mean time, we do what we can to look as attractive as possible to future suitors.

Just wish this could all be resolved before the season starts. As distracting as it is for us, you know it’s on the minds of our student-athletes also, as well as future recruits.

  47. Da Punchbowl Kid August 25, 2010 8:22 am

The WAC needs to be more aggressive and proactive in pursuing legal action against leagues and teams which threaten it’s viability. Benson should at least have a legal comittee looking at the WAC’s options in that regard. This is supposed to be amatuer athletics, and is anything but!

To wax metaphorical with the Dean, its too easy to raid the hen-house when nobody guards the chickens!

  48. Michigan Warrior August 25, 2010 8:37 am

#46 should have read… “I think we hold Fresno State and Nevada (and possibly the MWC) liable for damages and breach of contract (and tampering, or whatever the legal term for it is). But I don’t think we totally destroy our relationship with them…”

My typing is terrible today… spent yesterday afternoon pulling weeds, and these arthritic hands are aching.

  49. HawaiiMongoose August 25, 2010 8:42 am

I agree with ST. If there’s any way to stay in the WAC for football, that’s our best option, even if the conference lineup is down to San Jose State, Sacramento State, Utah State, New Mexico State, Texas State, UT San Antonio, and Louisiana Tech (which is unlikely to get a CUSA invitation). It will give UH a core schedule of seven games, around which it can add six games against attractive non-conference opponents. Now when it comes to non-football sports, I think we should move them to the Big West in a heartbeat if we get the chance.

  50. HawaiiMongoose August 25, 2010 8:45 am

Re #49, sorry, left out Idaho… which means maybe we get by without one of the Texas schools or Sacramento State.

  51. Ipu Man August 25, 2010 8:47 am

Good morning Tsaikos…hope all is well…

Still trying to wrap my head around this one. I still think that the WAC is looking more and more like it is going to be on life support for a long long time. Again, if USU and LaTech leave or NMSU drops football because of their financial problems…we are screwed. We need to look at options now such as independence in football and Big West in all other sports. However, I do see ST’s point….which is why I’m in a conundrum….MWAHAHAHAHAHA

Man, I love our blog host but disagree about independence. Notre Dame, Army, Navy – are we saying those football teams have nothing to play for? That they have no motivation to win? That we wouldn’t play as hard going up against Florida, Georgia or USC as we would against Texas San Antonio and Texas State? Sheesh, I’m not even sure Texas San Antonio isn’t Texas State. Is that the kind of competition we really want to face?

  55. Ipu Man August 25, 2010 8:52 am

UH may feel like a “motherless child”

Anyone know if the amount each WAC school pays for total travel to Hawaii is public record, or is it under wraps and access to it must be requested? I’d still like to know how much each school pays for each separate sports team they send to Hawaii. Also, could their costs be lowered, depending on type of flight (chartered or otherwise, and where they flied out of), which hotel, how many players, coaches, trainers, tutors, etc. traveled, and how long they stayed.

Funny they complain about the loss of school time to fly to Hawaii, and yet these schools are more than willing to travel all the way to the East Coast, burning up the same amount of time and mileage, and thus, loss of school time.

MWC Commish already stated that they were willing to cover some of the $5 mil exit fee for Fresno and Nevada, but not all. Sounded like the MWC would pay nearly all, say $4 mil, and both schools come up with the diff.

Glad to see that JD is actively making contact with the BWC and WCC to determine their interest in accepting UH if it goes independent.

Surprised that the PAC-10 Commish did not contact the schools Presidents to determine if they would vote to accept Colorado and Utah – this is all part of “greasing the wheels” BEFORE going public.

What hapapens if the PAC 10 Pres decide to reject Colorado and Utah? Will they go back to the MWC? Will the MWC take them back? Will the MWC then withdraw their offers to Fresno and Nevada? or, will the MWC push ahead with a 16-team conference and make 2 divisions with a championship game? If Utah comes back, no need to pursue Utah State?

  71. Mad Dog August 25, 2010 9:45 am

Speaking of Colorado and the Pac 10. Colorado’s entry into the Pac 10 might be delayed a year.

But there has been a belief the Big 12 would like to see Colorado leave after this year with Nebraska so that the reconfigured conference could move forward.

That idea, however, has hit a snag because the Big 12 and Colorado can’t agree on a figure.

What is the impact to the state economy with the loss of the UH football program including visitors traveling with teams, hotels, meals, etc. (ala the Pro Bowl). I’m sure there is an impact. If so the loss of the UH football team is a state problem not only a UH problem. If so, support in $$ should come from the state to subsidize opponent’s travel, etc. to provide the UH a package to present to MWC for entry.

  82. gigi-hawaii August 25, 2010 10:25 am

  84. Steve P August 25, 2010 10:26 am

When the WAC begins to resemble the old PCAA conference of decades ago, with schools like— Cal State Fullerton, Pacific coming into Aloha stadium to play(and I know that those schools may not even have football today) what are you going to tell out potential D-1 recruits? Oh, you get to play Texas San Antonio! How about Cal Davis? or Portland State?

One of the first things a football recruit wants to know is who we play. Going independent at least gives us a chance to put up a reasonable schedule that can attract those kids—-even if we have to play the mandatory two or three body bag games a season against top ten apponents! We at least can tell these kids that they can go ahead and play for us and perhaps justify them turning down other offers from big name schools.

Try that in the now erroding WAC! Try to convince some footballer in high school of D-1 potential that he gets to lock horns with Sacramento State and see what he says!

  85. gigi-hawaii August 25, 2010 10:27 am

I think we have a chance with USC. I mean, aren’t they still struggling to name a QB for our game??? I think we will beat them, just wait and see!!!

They lived in Maui for 4 years and moved back to CA

Who do we contact to talk to this family?

  95. SteveM August 25, 2010 11:08 am

    Good morning everyone!

ST –many of us have recognized the game scheduling problems as an independent–esp. in late September through November…and especially if we want to remain D-1A. I drafted a future marketing/solicitation message to D-1A schools to schedule us if we were an independent. But I deleted it since it was in questionable taste.

Finding teams to play us in OCT-NOV is a serious challenge…and worse, it will be away games except for a few D-1AA’s we might coax here…yes plural D1-AA’s. Maybe my questionable taste will emerge later today after lunch. 😐

  96. Stephen Tsai August 25, 2010 11:13 am

I don’t mind UH going independent if people don’t mind having the senior walk in September.

  97. HawaiiMongoose August 25, 2010 11:15 am

#84 Steve P, that can be addressed by balancing the weak conference schedule with a strong five or six game out-of-conference schedule. Even today, most of UH’s “marquee” games are out of conference: USC and Colorado this year, Washington and Oregon State next year, USC and BYU in 2012. If we go indy and have to play the majority of our games on the road, there’s a high risk of falling victim to a perpetual losing cycle, and that’s far more likely to kill the program than having to play UC Davis and UT San Antonio in conference every year.

  98. HawaiiMongoose August 25, 2010 11:16 am

Awful news about Brett Leonard. And the timing could hardly be worse. Sheesh, what next?!

As an independent, the NCAA can really help Hawaii by modifying the Hawaii exemption to allow sanctioned games to be played from mid-August to mid-December.

Then we can get a few more D1-A’s to play here and really attract ESPN interest since no one else will be playing at that time… 😐

  111. A-House August 25, 2010 11:37 am

In this great time of uncertainty for UH, hope all the “movers ‘n shakers”, where ever they are, are meeting as frequently as JD is on the phone in conversation discussing options.

I believe it’s fruitless to believe that USU and/or LaTech will not bolt for “greener pastures” in the next shake up. PAC 10 Presidents will not meet until October and this could swing the pendulum mightly.

Thus, the need to invite football team conferences or work on that “indy” status!!!!!!

Rock = “New” WAC. Hard Place = Going Independent in Football. Rock or Hard Place?

Both alternatives over a few years will mean a serious decline in UH football fan interest and recruiting, and eventually the death of the program, in large part due to lack of money.

Scheduling is the killer, along with the need to play on the road, and the costs to get teams to come to play us at home when they don’t need to. Assuming BYU goes independent, and some of the WAC teams do the same, then we can play some of those teams assuming we can match up openings in our schedule and get some of them to travel to Hawaii, but we will also be competing with them (and Notre Dame and Army), and soon other refugees from the big wipeout in conference reorganization, to get games as an independent– it is already competitive getting games against the better BCS teams, where teams like Appallachian State and the CUSA and MWC are trying for the same thing we are.

  128. Silky Voice of the Gorn August 25, 2010 11:45 am

Sitting around of course is not an option. Of course, when all of these conference realignments were going on and Boise got the MWC invite, I was concerned when Donovan’s response was something like let’s see and wait for the dust to settle. If that was really the case before, then I’m sure what has happened has woken many people up who had a similar line of thought. Unfortunately for UH, they were NOT fully prepared but is this surprising when reactiveness instead of proactiveness is the norm?

JJ knew while he was here that the football program needed to be a perennial top 25 program in order to position itself for the future when the shakeups occurred. Of course I don’t have to rehash the administrative screwups that took place which resulted in the loss of that head coach to another school. And while the PAC 10 may have been a pipe dream, we had decades to position the university both athletically and academically to make ourselves as attractive as possible. Every decade, we could have inquired and shown progress on both fronts. But the kind of leaders we have in Hawaii made that nearly impossible because they lack forwarding thinking vision and now the chickens have come home to roost where the options are severely constrained.

The late governor Burns had a vision in the 50s before he even became governor of seeing UH athletics competing at the highest levels. It was during the 60s once he became the governor when the planning began to upgrade UH from D-II to D-I, for a stadium to replace Honolulu Stadium, for that new stadium to be used as a selling point to get UH into a conference since even back then, there were people with enough vision to see that it would be a tough road of being an independent program at the D-I level out in the middle of the Pacific.

Now it looks like we are going full circle and in the exact opposite direction. Instead of progress, I see regression. And all of this is because of poor decisions and lack of true leadership over the previous decades by those who had the trusted responsibility to do so. And if you need to wonder why UH has trouble getting any sort of respect, its because those outside see these things that people too close to home tend to not see (the blinders on mentality). Our decisions look embarassingly elementary at times. We had a Heisman hopeful having to go on national television to announce the lack of soap in the locker rooms. We let the schools most winningest football coach walk away. We then have a rookie head coach too often times had trouble articulating himself and saying too many wrong things during the past two seasons.

Before we can EVEN ask or HOPE for help from the outside, UH and this state needs to get its own house in order first because that is why the athletic program finds itself in the position it is today. The WAC itself under the “lack of” leadership of Karl Benson also bears responsibility at that level. Half of the comments he has made since this whole thing went down aren’t even the full truth. IF the conference survives, he needs to be removed as commissioner because I for one, don’t have any faith in his abilities. Furthermore, if the conference survivies, it needs to amend its bylaws/member code of conduct. If the conference survives and UH remains as its senior member, any incoming member needs to agree they will not disparage Hawaii’s or any other members geography. If they have an issue with this, they need not sign up. And I know the conference at this moment cannot be choosy BUT really, there needs to be some level of respect and that tone needs to be set from the start from now.

As others have stated, part of being proactive is pursuing legal action against those parties which resulted in this damaged version of the WAC (the MWC, Fresno State, and Nevada). There has been a breach of fiduciary responsibilities which cannot be ignored when it comes to those conference members. This is more so important if the objective is to see the conference survive since a strong signal needs to be sent out that there will be legal ramifications in the future. While it may not seem the best tactic to take given the WAC’s current weakened state, a new tone needs to be set.

As far as UH making any sort of decision, what it needs to do is continue doing due diligence and actively working behind the scenes on multiple contingency plans. The UHAD needs multiple contingency plans because there is just too much in flux at the moment and UH won’t have time to dilly dally making key decisions when the next shoe drops. The PAC 10 meeting regarding Colorado and Utah is very much at play and not because it would benefit UH either way as all I see is a mad scramble by the MWC especially if they had lost BYU completely once that vote comes around in October. Personally, I’d like to see Cal, Stanford, and UCLA strongly oppose these two schools on the grounds of academic standards only for the hilarity that will ensue in watching these two schools AND the MWC have to scramble. More so if the MWC shoots at the hip again depending on what BYU’s September 1st decision will be (I kind of expect BYU to take its sweet time giving their response to all this positioning going on and I will chuckle if they give Thompson the middle finger for adding Fresno and more so, Nevada into the conference).

Regardless of whatever BYU does (and BYU will do what it wants to do in its own best interests and not for the MWC or any other institution), I highly doubt UH is in the Mountain West Conference plans except as an absolute last resort. Why? Well aside from the logistical issues of traveling and the time lost by student athletes, I still believe that commissioner Thompson (who has been there since the inception of the MWC) has a long memory with regards to what the then presidents of those universities might have been saying back then. Remember, it was then UH president Kenneth Mortimer who said NO to travel subsidies which shortly resulted in the original set of WAC defectors who went off and formed the MWC (I’m not justifying what those schools did as being right but from their point of view, that decision by Mortimer pushed them to do what they did). Maybe if the UH football team had taken care of business on the field the past two seasons, maybe Thompson would have had little choice but to put UH higher up on the list but as things stand now, no one (major conference wise) wants Hawaii and given what little we have to offer, we are in zero position to persuade anyone at this time.

Myself, I don’t have an issue with UH remaining in a neutered WAC initially so long as the premise is that business NOT go on as usual after that. Leaders in positions of leadership need to begin leading with forward looking vision. The university needs to change the way it does thing such that it can grow both academically and athletically. Going forward, UH athletic programs all need to take care of business; moreso the football and basketball programs. As these events have shown, winning in these two major sports is paramount. If events transpire that UH has no alternative but to go independent, then the UHAD also needs to send out a clear public message that community support will be needed. If those prima donna spoiled fans are only going to bitch and moan about weird game days/start times, fewer home games, increased ticket prices, other inconvenient aspects related to the challenges of scheduling as an independent, then maybe UH needs to reevaluate the future of the football program at that point. I don’t want to see it disappear but if the larger community isn’t going to support it, then maybe the money and effort would be better served elsewhere. In otherwords, if UH has to go independent, people out there had better put up or shutup if they want the football program to survive and not just be bandwagon fans that only show up at the stadium when the team is winning.

If the MWC teams don’t want UH in their fold because of travel expenses and distance problems…why would anyone think that teams beyond these parameters would want to commit themselves to a WAC conference?? Surely by now, we have learned a lesson from the original 14-16 WAC conference and the present scenario which no thought could get any worse….duhhhhh??

That’s why the very best deal would be getting into the Big West in all sports and taking our chances at going independant in FB….if independant FB don’t work out then at least all the rest of UH sports teams will have a conference to be associated with.

I don’t know what good blaming past leadership of the state does now, we can’t go back and change the past. I have to question how much the people care about athletics and by extension UH in general. This issue never seems to come up at election time, and since Burns has UH been a top priority for anyone.

We complain about are leaders, but we are the ones who elected and re-elected them, so maybe status quo is what the people want??

What do most leaders do when they are hit with a crises?

The police chief would set up a task force.

A governor would set up a panel of experts.

    Ditto for President Obama.

Military leaders would set up committees.

Professional teams would look towards their group of consultants.

And what about UH? Is UH athletics in a crises?

Yes. And what about their leadership?

Has there been a committee formed by the athletic director in moving the athletic program in the right direction?

    No.Not that I can see.

    Why not?

Wouldn’t a committee of experts offer some insights , perspectives and guidance to the athletic director as the school fights through this crises.

Is it possible some good ideas could hatch? And be of help to the athletic director during these crossroads?

Maybe. Especially when you note that UH athletics is walking a tightrope where any decision will affect them either positively or negatively in the future.

Would the late Stan Sherrif had formed a committee if he was faced with what JD is facing now?

I bet he would have. Ditto with the late Governor Burns. Smart men. I wish JD would have followed course.

    SteveM,

Wifey & I won’t be able to make it to the Karaoke Kall next month. But per your request, here are the lyrics for the redux of “Rawhide” that I titled “Warrior Pride”:

    Keep passin’, passin’, passin’,

    Though they’re disapprovin’,

Keep dem footballs flyin’, Warrior Pride!

    Don’t try to understand ‘em,

Just run ‘em, shoot, and blast ’em.

Soon we’ll be passin’ far and wide.

    Coach Mac’s a watchin’,

    Moniz will be bombin’,

Be bombin’ til the end of the ride.

Move ’em on, head ’em up,

Head ’em up, move ’em on,

Move ’em on, head ’em up, Warrior Pride!

Head ’em out, ride ’em in,

Ride ’em in, let ’em out,

Cut ’em out, ride ’em in, Warrior Pride!

    Ending lyrics:

    Keep rollin’, rollin’, rollin’,

    Though da teams are battlin’

Keep dem Warriors rollin’, Warrior Pride!

Through rain and wind and kona weather

    Hell bent for passin’ leather

Wishing Colt was by my side

    All da things I’m missin’

Ono food, June Jones, and kissin’

Are waiting at da end of my ride.

Move ’em on, head ’em up,

Head ’em up, move ’em on,

Move ’em on, head ’em up, Warrior Pride!

Head ’em out, ride ’em in,

Ride ’em in, let ’em out,

Cut ’em out, ride ’em in, Warrior Pride!

    WARRIOR PRIDE!!!

LOL @ winning the WAC. Who cares? That’s like being the skinniest kid in Fat Camp. You’re still fat. Student-athletes are competitors and want to play top teams and have a national audience. The WAC is now a joke. We should ask Coach Ken if his players at Navy would rather join the Sun Belt since being Indy gives them nothing to play for. After he stops laughing, he’d tell you no.

I don’t mind UH going independent if people don’t mind having the senior walk in September.

    It can happen.

Albeit at a much different level, some things are similar, I think to what Hawaii may face….

Southern Oregon plays at the NAIA level as an independent. As a perenially struggling program “out West” they constantly are challenged to complete a full schedule.

Last season they played three home games with the last one coming on Sept. 26…their Senior Night.

  216. In this week’s edition of H-MAIL, the official UH Rainbow Wahine softball booster club “Na Wahine Softball Booster Club”, is featured.

    Here is the excerpt:

    Na Wahine Softball Booster Group

    Seeking Members To Support Team

The 2010 Rainbow Wahine softball season brought a level of pride to UH that fans across the state will not forget anytime soon. For the first time in several years, the Rainbow Wahine softball program is proud to announce the reorganization of its booster club. The “Na Wahine Softball Booster Club” is now taking membership applications. The application can be found on our website at http://www.nawahine.com

The goals of the Na Wahine Softball Booster Club is to enhance the game experience for all fans of the Rainbow Wahine, to re-unite Rainbow Wahine alumnae with the fans of today, and to assist in ensuring a positive college athletic experience for all current and future Rainbow Wahine through member donations and volunteer efforts.

This is a shorter version of our submission as we expected it to be cut down a bit, but still great nonetheless.

Mahalo to John McNamara for getting our submission in so quickly.

  217. Steve,

I know Coach Coolen has said he has a JUGS brand pitching machine in their facility. But as previous players mentioned, Coach Coolen doesn’t favor them using it too much or even at all as he believes it’s more “harmful” in the sense that the players may get used to the simple motion from a machine.

As it’s well-documented, Coach Coolen prefers live pitching as he has said he likes to add more “movement” to his pitches against his players.

Oh and the bionic arm comment is awesome and pretty much to the point. I’m not sure what Coach Coolen’s pitch count amounts to everytime they have live batting practice, but you gotta figure that totals up to 350+ pitches per practice. Each player reportedly gets A LOT of shots at bat.

Agreed. If this was one of those schools that closes out practice to everybody something like this would never be known. Or if it is known, not until much later.

The offensive line is one of the huge question marks this season and given that we are going up against USC we do not need to be doing them any favors. USC now knows there is a potential that their nose guard may be going up against a 2nd or 3rd.

  225. If my memory serves me correctly, Tiwanak was the name already brought to light when Lefiti got injured. To me, it was a surprise of sorts that Brett Leonard was being looked at as the starting center over Tiwanak simply because I have never heard or read of his name in the discussion for the center position.

So, while Leonard was “poised” to be named the #1 center, I have a feeling there isn’t much of a drop from Leonard to Tiwanak based on what I seen reported regarding the center spot.

  226. chad August 25, 2010 2:25 pm

    post #129:

You hit the bullseye. Fan support makes the team, ask any big time program, or even ask Boise St. The whole city of Boise is behind their football team and look at their sucess….

I personally want Independence, but thats BIG BUCKS. The whole State of Hawaii NEEDS to put the effort and funding, from the governor down to the fans. Im sure ESPN might take a look at night games IF….IF we can pack that stadium EVERY game. Not just BYU, USC etc. ALL of em from Northern Colorado to Notre Dame.

My brother lives in the Bay Area, being a sports fan, he believes UH fans and government are not capable of the type of loyalty that a “big Time” programs need. He pointed out to me, watching a Hockey game live at the San Jose Sharks HP Pavillion… ” look at the fans, 3/4 of them have a genuine jersey on… you know how much those cost? He took an average of 15,000 people at $200 a jersey… 20,000 people sold out, $75 – $400 a ticket… well, do the math not including food, parking etc. for ONE home game…. Of course HP being a main corporate sponsor helps…

I would like to say that theres a lot of good ideas and great brainstorming on this blog. I asked the tsaiko bloggers a few days ago if UH had big resources like big time programs do, to no avail. My question is… If UH were to play BCS caliber teams with say a .500 winning avg (all games at least fairly competitive) would that be enough to keep the fans coming back? Or do you think UH fans are more interested in just “winning”? I believe that so long UH is competitive with BCS caliber teams, not necessarily winning all, they will have a good following, also keeping Hawaii talent in Hawaii. I personnaly find it hard to get exited over games like Charleston Southern, UC Davis, Northern Colorado,Western Alaska etc. year after year

…Does anyone think like I do?

Wow, thank you for pulling my name. It is an honor to have Coach’s autograph, especially from that milestone! (I love autographs but am very shy about asking for them.) My enduring regret is that I never was brave enough to ask for one from Red Rocha, even the time when he gave me gentle scoldings for some kind of parking thing back when I was a student.

Speaking of students, best wishes for Brett Leonard and his knee … especially since it is “sprained” and not “strained” if I am remembering the difference correctly. 🙁

“Talks between BYU and the WAC have been “infrequent” during the past two days says BYU reporter Jay Drew of the The Salt Lake Tribune.”

Doesn’t surprise me at all. When Ne-Vah-Da and Fresno State left it was a foregone conclusion that BYU would drop the WAC as a parking spot for their other teams but no fear Hawai`i UH is weighing their options.

  233. greenthumb August 25, 2010 2:47 pm

So since the team has however many Tuesdays before game day next week, I hope they are seeing the little hesitations and gaps and stuff that USC had both on offense and defense last season. Barkley is good, but he can be tied up. At times it seemed like he was waiting to pass not because he planned to but because he wasn’t seeing something viable. Also, I hope this is not wishful thinking, but USC’s linemen don’t seem as immovable as the SEC ones, such as what we saw from Georgia.

Before I respond to Chad #227..

I would guess that there are a bunch of frustrated folks out there and we are all second guessing the folks in Manoa as to what the next step could be. I’ve thrown out a number of wild ones from purchasing our own airplane and doing charters in between to the latest of doing some due dileigence on the rumor that Pac 10 may not be accepting Utah and Colorado into the fold and starting a new super WAC with them and BYU. All of the wild suggestions have been flattened so I guess it be best to just wait until the dust settles, as it has in the past few incidents and not armchair quarterback. Not to say that things should be accepted, but if suggestions here have no merit, not just mine, it really is quite a complicated mess that has basically only one way to address.

Chad, back when Mr. Tomey was coaching he had a different philosophy, “beat the cr_p out of the other team, stay close and win in the end” or something like that. I have to think that that has something to do with packing an averge of 42,000 in the stadium. We like that beat the heck out of the other guy football. If you ask many who flooded the parking lot and stadium in the day, many vividly remember with relish how a Noga brother almost singlehandedly descimated the quarterbacking corp of a New Mexiico team.

We not had that kind of football in a while. Yes, we’ve won and we’ve been quite proficient at putting points on the board and I for one have enjoyed that.

If we ever get to the point where we knock out some mouth pieces while putting up points, win or loose, I’d say that the place will fill up. We need rock ard “D”. Hey we love Mr. Penn because he’s junk yard dog tough, in a contact sport. That was missing in the last few years and I think it had something to do with attendance.

But as you can see, I’ve been wrong before.

Yes, as the machines wear out, you can try to replace certain parts and shell out money for constant maintenance, but the bottom line is, a machine put together in the 80’s aren’t nearly as “efficient” as the ones built in the 90’s.

Wait… we are talking about jugs machines right? 😆 😆

  251. chad August 25, 2010 4:07 pm

    #242 Buffoman,

I was there with season tickets in the Tomey days, and I dont think Aloha stadium was ever the same since. Imagine then, not less than 40,000 every game and 50,000 when the “boys” came into town. I couldnt believe how LOUD Aloha Stadium was. I guess TV & PPV had to have dropped the attendance. I’m not sure if PPV is hurting the Football program or helping it.

The truth is, we NEED to get those numbers up again. Aside from the obvious results a great football team will produce, we need other ways to insure the “Full House” attendence. Someone here mentioned scheduling the Armed Forces teams every year and start a rivalry… and I think its a great idea to have the military filling the stands also. Not sure what kind of off field problems that might cause though..

At this point, I think that UH football needs to either “step up” (big time) or “step down” (div. 2). 32 years Ive been waiting for the day when fans say… “Its so hard to get Warrior football tickets!”. I’ve been waiting since 1978 for a “big time program. So forgive me if I have an “all in” attitude.

  252. Steve,

I just know a lot of fans are gonna call in and try to get Coach Shoji to say something about the Rainbow Wahine existing outside the WAC.

Jim Donovan has said publically he believes the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team CAN exist as an independent based on reputation, but I personally am not comfortable with ANY UH sport existing as an independent other than football and STILL have my reservations about that too.

  253. duffer aka Ace (iPhone) August 25, 2010 4:17 pm

    Kazz

Is the UH planning on charging admission to WSB games or passing the hat around?

  254. Duffer,

For the 2011 softball season admission will be free again and we will coordinate with the appropriate people certain games where we will have the donation “buckets” around.

Of course those will not be the only opportunities for fans at the stadium to pass on some extra dollars for the softball program. We are planning several things including a donation table where fans can receive gifts in exchange for a donation to the program and such.

Going beyond the 2011 season, as far as we know, it’s a question mark. I attended a public session last year in which Carl Clapp presented to us their plan to raise the minimum they could charge fans for admission to games. This was presented to the BOR already and it was approved.

Essentially from what I undestood THEN, was that the non-revenue sports like softball, water polo, and soccer would not have admission for their games for at least another 3 years meaning it would be up for review in 2013.

Things change though, but at the same time, I don’t know if they would be able to charge for softball as early as 2012 if that were the case.

If the Wahine have a season like they did last year, they may speed up the process to have admission installed for 2012 though.

    That is just my guess.

Personally when you look at the non-revenue sports that are spectator sports that have the potential to draw some sort of revenue, the potential lies with Wahine soccer and especially Wahine softball after the season they had last year.

  255. Michigan Warrior August 25, 2010 4:49 pm

#227… Chad… Over the years, we’ve witnessed super teams in certain sports, and we’ve also witnessed poor, winless teams. While it’s true that Hawaii usually draws bigger paying crowds for marquee competition, I don’t think it’s necessary that all competition must be BCS caliber.

I hear lots of complaints against possibly adding those Texas schools. There were similar complaints prior to Boise State joining, and we see what happened. Part of our problem with the WAC is that some teams never fully made it out of the basement, mostly due to budget cuts. We can complain about them all we want. Truth is, we’re just a step above them ourselves, or else we’d be heading to a better conference already, and not having these discussions.

The main problem is our culture. We associate ourselves with winners, and we complain and want everyone and their brother/sister fired when we’re losing. Fair weather fans don’t want to jump onto the bandwagon until they know their neighbors are supportive and agreeable too. Maybe it’s a drawback of our Aloha Spirit. We want to get along with our neighbors, so we don’t want to do things to upset them. It’s not like that on the mainland. I’ve lived on the East Coast, West Coast, and a couple of places in between… the latest being 14+ years in Michigan. People here couldn’t care less what you think. They love and support their team, whether it’s Michigan, Michigan State, or even out-of-state schools. They also love their Red Wings, Pistons, Tigers, and yes, even the Lions, despite years of fielding terrible teams. They see me wearing my UH hat every day, and sometimes ask about it. After I give them a short speech about our baseball, volleyball, and softball teams, they politely nod and usually say they didn’t know Hawaii had teams in those sports. The sports culture here is far deeper than what it is back home.

Myself? I’ve been a UH fan since my Termite Palace days… sitting on bleachers that would give us splinters on some nights. To me, it won’t matter who we play, as long as we put everything into it. This goes for every sport, male and female. I just hope we’ll continue to have teams to cheer for and support in the future. As long as we do our best and leave it all on the field, I’m happy. Of course, I’m happier when we pull off big wins, or were competitive throughout the whole contest, at least. I also get depressed when we lose, whether close or we get blown out.

I’m sure we’ve got fans that run the full spectrum of support, from ocassional to rabid. And until we change our sports culture, we will always be faced with this ‘problem’. Perhaps reinstating the Student Fee is a step in the right direction. But we won’t know it’s full impact until it’s been in place for a while.

  260. Michigan Warrior,

Just tell those Michigan residents that they should remember UH, especially recently when the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team EMBARASSED the Wolverines in a three set sweep to advance to the NCAA Final Four in 2009.

Or when the Warriors upset the football team in 2004.

Or when the Rainbow Warriors squashed their precious then #4 ranked basketball Spartans in Honolulu in 2005.

    😎

    #256 michigan warrior

Did you read my post #227? You”ve been around the block, back across the country and witnessed sports fans across the nation. Basically, you and my brother both agree about UH fans. I guess its sad but true. Without enough fans that “bleed green”, change cannot be made…… or can it?

  262. I think we all took the WAC for granted.

  263. roysan16 August 25, 2010 5:38 pm

I acknowledge all the posts today that offer insight. There was some great ones. Some from posters than post here infrequently but I wish were more frequent. In my view the great thing is that when you post something profound and noteworthy it drowns out the chit chat posts. ST said that himself-when the blog goes hunky dory the post counts drop. That’s true, I couldn’t have agreed more. I find reading this blog more interesting when there’s an absence of gigi type of posts. Sorry I’m just telling it like it is.

  264. I take that back.

I meant to say I think we all took the feeling of security we had with conference affiliation for granted.

  265. It’s so much easier, for me, to enjoy other things in my life when all is safe and sound with UH athletics and more so when we are winning in anything.

I think the same thing can be said for everyone to a certain degree.

When the world seems like it’s falling apart, as UH fans, we get concerned and obsessed waiting for some sort of answer and that’s where the massive blog count comes in.

I think it’s slowing down a bit and for even myself I can start looking forward to the volleyball, football, and basketball seasons.

    Until the next shoe drops………….

    OFF-SPORTS TOPIC:

    LIGHT BULB EXCHANGE THIS THURSDAY

The Windward Ahupua`a Alliance, along with nearly a dozen other environmental and renewable energy organizations, will be featured at the quarterly GREEN MARKET on THRUSDAY, AUGUST 26 – that’s tomorrow – between 9 am & 1:30 pm on the Fort Street Mall between King & Hotel Streets in downtown Honolulu.

Thanks to the Blue Planet Foundation, we’ll also be passing out free CFL bulbs so bring along an energy-wasting incandescent bulb from home or your office to start saving money!! And, of course, to help reduce our dependency on fossil fuels!

If you’re a Tsai-ko and don’t have an incandescent bulb, just mention your blog name and you’ll still get a freebie.

WAA will also be recruiting volunteers for its PLant A Native Tree Campaign as well as sharing information about its work on climate change & rising seas concerns, solid waste management issues, and on Kawainui Marsh restoration projects. In collaboration with the international environmental organization 350.org, WAA’s Campaign will join thousands of people around the world in a Global Work Party by overseeing the planting of one thousand trees (1,000) all across O`ahu on Sunday afternoon, October 10, 2010.

WAA will also be passing out information about its initial tree-purchasing fund-raiser at Murphy’s Bar & Grill in downtown Honolulu on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Suggested donation is $25 of which $20 is tax-deductible. Heavy pupus & non-alcoholic drinks included with a no-host bar available.

Another fund-raiser will be held on Sunday, September 19, from 4 pm ri 6 pm in Kailua at a very familiar Tsai-ko location. Meeting up with the PL owner tomorrow afternoon to confirm the arrangements.

  267. Michigan Warrior August 25, 2010 5:51 pm

Kazz… yeah, I do bring up certain special moments. That beat down of the Spartans before they went on to Maui is a real good one too, since that’s our Priest’s alma mater! And once in a while, it does come up in conversation. I’m real anxious to see how Coach Gib will do this season. Aside from that, they usually have short memories of their losses… excluding Appalachian State! That’s one they’ll never forget!

As far as Na Wahine goes… I have a neighbor whose daughter plays volleyball and softball for our high school. She’s a friend of our oldest daughter, since they had Choir together. So, we do have discussions about volleyball and softball throughout the year. It was cool to give them the link to Coach Shoji’s 1000th! I’m also glad that that they got to see Wahine Softball on tv too. And when they saw how we honor seniors on Senior Night, with all the love and aloha, and the huge pile of leis… you can see how it piques the interest of both student and parents. Only difficulty with this girl is that she’s real tight with her family and relatives, and she’s sure that going to college will be an in-state affair for her.

  285. JM,

I hope I can make this Sunday’s match against UCLA. Not too confident I can.

I hope to attend a very uncomfortable “homecoming” for Mike Sealy… 😎

Well, “uncomfortable” as he has to face the reality of him leading UCLA to another loss in Manoa. 😆

  286. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 25, 2010 6:30 pm

Michigan Warrior – this past Saturday we collected over 60 incandescents in less than two hours. BTW – one of our key volunteers is a Michigan grad. He always shows up for community service projects wearing a Michigan t-shirt. He misses seeing hot & heavy – his words – games in both football and basketball; however, I think he married a local girl who really doesn’t want to live in snow & slush for four months every year.

Back to UH sports-related stuff: For those of you who live in Hawai`i and are registered voters, please take the time to talk to candidates running for the State House & State Senate. Many people – whether talking about elected officials or their constituents – do not grasp the important role that intercollegiate athletics plays in the overall economy. All they see/hear is $10 million Department of Athletics deficit and 17 furlough days and that’s enough for many of them to close the windows, turn off the lights, and shut the door on college sports.

You CAN make a difference, but you have to speak up now. Educating & informing is a powerful tool in getting elected officials to do the right thing.

Fortunately, Jim Donovan and Virginia Hinshaw are good at E&I, but the candidates need to hear from you too.

  297. LizKauai (iPhone) August 25, 2010 7:39 pm

“According to Vittorio Tafur, Colt Brennan will be eligible for the practice squad for the Raiders this year because “Even though he was Redskins emergency No. 3 quarterback 2 years ago, he wasn’t active & therefore (is) eligible for (the) practice squad.”

This is interesting news, and I’ve never heard anything quite like it since I started covering football. But apparently, there are exceptions to some of the practice squad eligible rules. I didn’t think Brennan would make the team due to the fact that he came into the mix so late in the offseason. It was obvious to me that he was just an extra arm while some guys recovered. But I can’t think of a quarterback that I would want running my practice squad any more than Colt Brennan. If this works out, it could be a great pick-up by the Raiders down the road.”

#129…well thought out, and obviously a post that took time and energy to write…mahalo.

i wonder what the ladies are learning tonight?

  303. HNL August 25, 2010 8:24 pm

If we have to go independent, do we have to put all of our other teams in one league? Like before, the wahine played in the big west. Why not the men in the wcc. I think the wcc is better in baseball and basketball, and the big west in volleyball.

  304. HNL August 25, 2010 8:30 pm

Also it splits up the travel costs for all those schools, they don’t have to pay for both men and women. I think it might also help with tourism, alot more fans that might come for one game instead of choosing between sports.

  305. Derek August 25, 2010 8:35 pm

Leahy and Leahy should be a 1 hour show. 30 minutes is too short. Interviews with the guest(s) is too short, especially when you have a guest like Dick Tomey. I absolutely enjoy

hearing from Tomey. His insight and his passion for Hawaii is second to none. I think he should be a special assistant to Jim Donovan. Heck, he should come out to be a volunteer football coach, or even be a paid part-time football coach. He can bring so much to the table.

  306. d1島 August 25, 2010 8:44 pm

The end line of this article seems to hint that there may be sentiment to stay at 11 teams in the MWC even after BY-Who decides to remain there.

And, to those who forget history, the formation of divisions precluding traditional rivalries led to the creation of the Mountain West in the first place.

  307. d1島 August 25, 2010 8:56 pm

BY-Who is still not giving any indication of its decision even in response to the Denver Post’s story.

Contacted late Wednesday, Duff Tittle, BYU Associate Athletic Director for Communications, declined to respond to The Post’s report and repeated a now-familiar mantra, that “nothing has changed on our front. We continue to review our options and search for ways to advance our athletic programs.”

The Post said its sources are at schools inside and outside the MWC; officials at two MWC schools contacted by The Salt Lake Tribune on Wednesday night could not confirm or deny The Post’s report.

MWC Commish makes it pretty clear which way he wishes BY-Who would decide.

“We’re trying to see what can be resolved,” Thompson told the newspaper. BYU “has some major concerns with the television contracts. … But I’m not going to put words in their mouth, I don’t know” what BYU is going to do.

The commissioner acknowledged that “we are a better business model with BYU” in the conference.

What is the universe? And beyond that?

And time? What makes it tick?

Could the eleventh dimension be true?

    Does space matter? Matter, space?

Dust in the wind. All we are is dust in the wind.

And this just in from some not so young bloods ~

Love is but the song we sing,

And fear’s the way we die

You can make the mountains ring

    Or make the angels cry

Know the dove is on the wing

And you need not know why

    C’mon people now,

    Smile on your brother

    Ev’rybody get together

Try and love one another right now

Some will come and some will go

    We shall surely pass

When the one that left us here

    Returns for us at last

We are but a moments sunlight

    Fading in the grass

    C’mon people now,

    Smile on your brother

    Ev’rybody get together

Try and love one another right now

If you hear the song I sing,

    You must understand

You hold the key to love and fear

    All in your trembling hand

Just one key unlocks them both

    It’s there at your command

    C’mon people now,

    Smile on your brother

    Ev’rybody get together

Try and love one another right now

    Right now

    Right now!

    Peace Out!

Additional Colt News by Levi “Dizzle” Damien:

Another player that has missed a lot of reps is Colt Brennan. And if JC, Grad, or Boller get hurt during the season, they can sign him to the active roster.

Wonder if next season they’ll have a couples only clinic along with the man and women’s? $40… two hour date..with light refreshments, sounds about right…

Curt ~ I blame the ‘skins for releasing Colt too late for him to have a fair shot elsewhere. Shameful.

    Howzit Kekoa,

Colt definitely has a difficult road. With a minute left and 80 yards to go, there’s no one else I would want to pull the trigger than Colt. All right Colt; give it your best shot.

    #303 – chawan_cut,

Weeeellllll, it was a bit confusing for most of us listening to the King of the run ‘n shoot, because most of us don’t have the basic terms down. He tried to explain parts of the passing plays. I got bits & pieces. But now I understand what’s happening with setting up different routes.

What I did get was catching the ball using the “noose”. Got to practice that with Joe Avery on the field. Got better at throwing, but I could catch with two hands.

Since I watch practice, I think I did well on the defensive tackle drill. Met Sia Sua who transferred here from Portland State at the start of the semester. He’s from Kaua’i.

I got my question answered about what a bubble screen was.

The video that Chris Williams put together from last year’s season was great! We got to sit and watch that while waiting for the clinic to start.

Fun to hear Mouse refer to Heather McMackin as “the kid”, and he calls the Coach, Gregory.

Alex Green was on the field with Mike Smith in the running backs drill. He’s getting better.

    I can’t kick a football worth ****.

  328. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 25, 2010 11:37 pm

Sorry that I had to miss the clinic tonight, but by the time I added up the cost for gas, parking and “tuition,” it would have set me back $30.

Have to miss tomorrow’s Stadium Authority meeting because of the GREEN MARKET event. Nothing is on Authority’s agenda to indicate that there is any concern about the roiling turmoil going on in intercollegiate athletics and the impact on the future of Aloha Stadium.

If you’re in town Thursday betweem 9 am & 1 pm, drop on by the GREEN MARKET to say hi

Looking forward to Friday night’s start of the Wahine volleyball season. Wonder whether our new seats are any good? I think the railings at the bottom of the stairs may block our view of the floor.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Roysan 16 #173: I read your post earlier and thought about it. I believe that Stan Sheriff would not have had a committee. Based upon the evidence of his actions while the AD, he was his own man, very much like Frank Fasi. They would listen to advice and opinion from trusted minions but would ultimately make the decision based on their core values and belief in what was the right course of action. Formal committees are for bureaucrats, I know I was one and have witnessed management and leadership do the very things you mentioned. Truly great leaders bite the bullet and live or die by their decision. Note that Hugh Yoshida did not have a panel to fire Bob Wagner nor hire Fred Von Appen. However, he did have a panel to seek out June Jones. He got burned once and needed to “share the blame” if JJ did not work out. He hedged his bet so to speak.

Visionary leadership is a singular act. Many eyes cannot see the same vision but they are influenced and convinced of the direction of the organization by the visionary leader. They trust their core values, seek inspiration, solace, and soul searching before making their decision. Leadership excellence is shaped by the leader who helps to make others rise up to their potential and take control of the details of managing the organization. The leader is left to outline strategy, direction, goals, objectives that his charges need to perform in order to move forward. Bureaucracy is rife with indecision, conservatism, fear, and stilted thinking, that is why committees are needed. It is like a self fulfilling prophecy. Of course you make valid points, and this is just my opinion…I did not have a committee to lay this out! Hah! jes kidding!!!

  332. LizKauai (iPad) August 26, 2010 12:00 am

Chad- I am a recent live-game fan and have always loved finesse football. My fave player of all time is Joe Montana. I still regret not taking myself to a ProBowl to see him play in real life. I did not repeat the regret and took myself to see Colt Brennan and the perfect season Warriors as often as I could.

Those games were unforgettable. I long to see Hawaii continue to play finesse football again.

If football is to have a future in this changing world, it needs to stop permanently damaging human beings before the prime years of life. That is my opinion. Purely smash mouth playing is not enjoyable to me. I guess it has to do with bad childhood memories. In any case, I still have nightmares about Colt getting beat up and beat down in the Sugar Bowl. A kill Colt Brennan defense was effective in stopping the Warriors but it did not feel very classy to me.

I guess I subscribe to the count coup way of battle rather than the bring a gun to a knife fight approach. Yeah, you may win, but was it skillful and honorable?

    GO WARRIORS!

  333. LizKauai (iPad) August 26, 2010 12:08 am

Annodah Dave- my favorite form of decision-making is consultation. This is where the direct stakeholders or the persons in charge meet to determine a course of action based on essential core principles. Similar to ho’oponopono.

No personal gain, credit or blame to go to any participant, just putting forth views to find the best course of action and building in the freedom to change a decision if it proves faulty.

  334. Slugger August 26, 2010 12:10 am

    LizK,

I think there were about 100 women in attendance. 5 groups with maybe 20 per group, or less.

I don’t think Mouse wanted to give us too much straight information. After all, it’s the week before the biggest game of our season. But he did explain some of the field routes: 90 Streak Balanced, that I understand.

The field drills were fun! If ST wants some pictures to post from the Wahine clinic, I’ll send a few & he can post, or not.

Met a few women who read the blog, but they don’t post.

We got to walk around the new offices on the third floor. Aranda was up there after they fed us hot dogs. He was working on defensive plays. Nice conference rooms! The softball coaches had mentioned yesterday that the renovations on their wing weren’t done. Yup!

  335. Slugger August 26, 2010 12:11 am

Sia Sua, from the Waimea side, said your name sounded familiar. He mentioned knowing Kenny Estes’ family.

    RE: #332

Annoddah Dave — excellent description of leadership, bureaucrats and committees. Since we stand at this side of life’s timeline, we’ve seen it and lived it. Makes me wonder where you would fit on the Myers-Briggs type indicator…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers-Briggs_Type_Indicator

…from your description, I think Stan Sheriff and Frank Fasi were INTJ types. Google INTJ

Now I wonder what type JD is…? In any event, I know it’s a tough time with tough decisions to be made. I will respect his decision(s).

if this hasn’t been posted yet …

” … Hawaii women’s basketball assistant coach Serenda Valdez has decided to leave the program to pursue a career in academics.

Valdez, a fixture around UH lower campus, was in her second stint with the Rainbow Wahine. She worked with the team’s wing players and handled administrative tasks such as player academics and admissions.

Head coach Dana Takahara-Dias won’t have much time to fill the position. Practice starts Oct. 15. The job posting went up Tuesday and will remain up until Sept. 9. …”

  339. roysan16 August 26, 2010 3:21 am

Do teams scrimmage without wearing pads?

Evidently USC might. To me this makes sense. It allows the team to simulate game like conditions and also insulate the players from injuries.

I found this on USC blog.

    Final scrimmage

USC will hold what’s billed as a mock scrimmage on Thursday at the Coliseum, but it isn’t open to the public. The scrimmage isn’t expected to be in full uniform, and the players might not even wear pads.

    Does UH have mock scrimmages?

    Great Morning All!

Of course there are many perspectives to the WAC/MWC shakeup(down?)

Everyone seems to think they are getting the raw end of the deal:

The ultimate outcome of USU’s well-intended brokering of BYU’s original plan to the Western Athletic Conference in all sports except football could be serious damage to only the Aggies. They’re left in a weakened WAC, thanks to the departures of Nevada and Fresno State via the Mountain West’s response to the once-imminent loss of BYU.

  341. d1島 August 26, 2010 5:14 am

While the Warriors settled on a starting Center thru attrition, BY-Who went all the way thru fall camp without naming a starting QB.

The BYU Cougars will go into game week — they begin Washington-focused practices Thursday — without having said which quarterback, Jake Heaps or Riley Nelson, will get the first snap Sept. 4 when the Huskies roll into LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Coach Bronco Mendenhall was given two chances to provide a hint after fall camp ended Wednesday with a 40-play scrimmage that featured mostly second- and third-string players, but sidestepped both questions.

Asked if anything changed in his mind after Heaps had a better day than Nelson, and got more chances to shine, Mendenhall replied, “Nope, it is just the same” as after Saturday’s scrimmage when he said the two were “dead-even.”

At least one person in the “Valley” purports to have a conscience and some second thoughts about moving to the MWC.

I’m not saying it was the wrong move. It’s just what’s churning in my gut the more I think about it. Besides, staying in the WAC meant making a deal with BYU, a school that never had a friend it couldn’t ditch. It’s tried to dump TCU twice now.

The Cougars were only trying to leech off the WAC until they get to the Big 12, anyway. Part of the potential deal with the WAC should have been the stipulation that they change the mascot to the BYU Parasites.

So there was no great choice. The MWC even had the nerve to put out a news release as Fresno State was contemplating the decision, to turn up the pressure, so President John Welty would have to explain to his athletes and fans why he said no to joining the cool club.

“When you get into making these decisions, you’ve got to set emotions and feelings aside,” he told me. “You have to focus on what’s best for the university.”

He’s probably right. But it’s going to take quite a while for it to feel right.

  344. greenthumb August 26, 2010 7:26 am

Looking into what was behind the Pakistani Cricket team no-ball alleged scandal made me realise just how huge the cricketing industry is, uniforms, bats, balls, clothing etc. Billions of pounds are involved here. Surely the players themselves (without whom none of this enterprise could happen) need to be far better paid than they seem to be in order to remove any temptation on their part to scupper this enormous enterprise by, against all the rules of fair play on the pitch, beefing up their relative pittance of a wage by illegally betting and so gaining a small extra crust for themselves. How about more fair play to the players in the first instance? Pay them properly in the first place and the game wouldn’t have these problems.

You can look into maintaining your own dedicated server or VPS but you’ll really need to study up on server administration. Ded Servers usually run about $100/mo so it’s not cheap. A really good low priced hosting company that lets you host multiple sites on one account is called winninghosting.com It’s under $5 a month last I checked.
