Quo vadimus

Jerry Maguire: How do I spin this?

Avery: Honey, it’s spun!

Jerry Maguire: What did I do to you?

Avery: It’s all about you, isn’t it? “Soothe me, save me, love me.” I have to finish my job.

Jerry Maguire: Everything is on the run with us.

Avery: We are salespeople. We sell. It’s not “trust my handshake.” It’s “make the sale. Get it signed.”

Jerry Maguire: Welcome to my nightmare.

Avery: Is honesty outlawed here?

Jerry Maguire: I would prefer loyalty.

Avery: Our deal was the brutal truth.

Jerry Maguire: I think you added the “brutal.”

Avery: There is a sensitivity thing that some people have. I don’t have it. I don’t cry at movies, or gush over babies. And I don’t tell a man who just screwed up, “Oh, poor baby.” But I love you.

OK, you’ve been dumped.

Here are the next five stages: 1) Pout. 2) Retrace every dumb thing you’ve done. 3) Listen to Usher songs. 4) Annoy your friends with more pouting, retracing and Usher songs. 5) Move on.

Time’s up for the WAC. If you’re the WAC, you make sure the six remaining members stay put. Then you go out and invite every school that even daydreams about Division I-A status. Travel subsidies? Sure. Entry fee? Waived. Whatever it takes. Hey, the WAC should even ask ESPN for help. There’s a two-year window to add two teams. The WAC is on the clock.

If you’re UH, forget the independence thoughts. I thought it was a good idea, too, until I head the national talk-show hosts yesterday. It is better to be in a conference: guaranteed games, trophies, all-star nominations that look good on resumes. The WAC has been good to UH, but why not also make a pitch to the Mountain West? UH can offer travel subsidies, emphasize the Hawaii exemption, and give up the automatic entry into the Hawaii Bowl. UH could also offer the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation model. In the MPSF, all of the California teams play home-and-home matches during the season. The polar teams — BYU and Hawaii — don’t. Instead, for instance, UH and Long Beach State will play each other twice in Long Beach this year and twice in Hawaii the following year. The same format is used in WAC softball. It’s less of a hardship when a team has to play in Hawaii every other year. UH also can offer to give up a guaranteed share of any national TV contract. Instead, it could agreed to be paid only when it appears on national TV. And, when all else fails, it could ask ESPN for help.

The final episode of “Sports Night” is called “Quo Vadimus.

Dana: Can I have everyone’s attention please? We just have minutes before air. I know most of you have heard by now, but we’ve been sold to a company called Quo Vadimus. I don’t know what our future is anymore. I know there’s things that I’m supposed to be saying to you right now, but I don’t know. I don’t even know… I don’t even know what the hell Quo Vadimus means. Does anybody know what Quo Vadimus means?

Jeremy: It means ‘Where are we going?’

Dana: Well, that’s fine but… what?

Jeremy: It’s Latin, it means ‘Where are we going?’

On a happier note, happy birthday to Kortney Kikiloi-Borthwick.

Basically, I am getting from Garret, Stephen…and well the obvious nature of college nature that its money that talks and everything else walks.

That being said…we should have a show with the MWC if we can fill in the blank.

Dear MWC, our University wants to be a member of your conference. To do so we are prepared to offer you unprecedented financial incentives by doing _________________,_______________,___________etc

  7. SteveM August 20, 2010 12:40 am

    …If you’re UH, forget the independence thoughts…..

Good. That was the general consensus of the Cattle Call Tsai-kos today…for the reasons you list and more. The WAC conference itself is what we have some control over. We do not control the other conferences nor do we have control over the teams we will need to play us as an independent.

Like you said, let’s help ourselves and work on what we do control at this time…and not sit at the mercy of other possibilities. Attempt to reload the WAC and let other possibilities be “bonus” options if and when they develop.

  8. Stephen Tsai August 20, 2010 12:41 am

I know a lot of folks expect things to take care of themselves.

But for every loss in the past, the WAC still had a workable number of remaining teams. Not so this time.

I’m not sure exactly what Nevada brings to the table. Small stadium. Small crowds. Bad weather. Fans don’t travel to bowls.

I’m sure UH could offer just as much. But it better get proactive. Because this isn’t one of those times where you wake up and it was all a bad dream.

  9. Stephen Tsai August 20, 2010 12:44 am

    SteveM

Know how it’s easier to get a job when you have a job?

It’s easier to get into another conference when you’re already in a conference. Good luck from trying to go from independence back into a conference. UH needs to stay in a conference. It’s like the difference between working for someone and working for yourself. I’d rather have the guaranteed check and the benefits.

  13. al August 20, 2010 1:17 am

yup, i’d be asking every tom, dick, and harry to consider the new wac. portland state, north texas, sac st, texas sanan, houston, anybody.

    got team?

    like play with us?

we could always supplement the weak conference opponents with quality non-con teams.

  14. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 2:04 am

Another day… let’s see what transpires before the clock strikes midnight!

  15. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 2:08 am

There is some degree of respect and faithfulness amongst several WAC schools. I wonder why the MWC has such hatred for us. Surely, we have a better overall package than Nevada. I mean, even with the constant struggles of an unreal, injury-plagued season, we still nearly pulled off going to a bowl game. Basketball has a new look. Lots of other sports are winning championships, plus individual, national honors.

  16. ai-eee-soos August 20, 2010 2:28 am

My stance was always to keep the WAC intact.

I’ve posted a number times that these schools should have been invited,

so that they could get “ready” to move up. Looks like that time is here.

    Sac State, UC-Davis, Portland State.

Ive pointed out that Sac State is already in the WAC for baseball.

  17. G (China) August 20, 2010 2:31 am

Another issue is recruits…how does this play into everyone’s mind? What sucks is that HI has so many D1 athletes that you would think that NCAA be a bigger supporter of UH being a viable school that succeeds regularly. We turn out pro’s period. Why not the NFL be more involved as well? Imagine Texas, A&M, Baylor, Tech, SMU not being there for all the athletes that compete in their fine state.

  18. al August 20, 2010 2:32 am

so how much motivation will the schools who have been left behind need when they face fresno state and nevada this year and next?

…and how much wrath will the fans have for this pair of benedict arnold’s when they come in to town over the next two years?

  19. al August 20, 2010 2:38 am

g (china)…first, sorry i missed the cc today. business took me to maui for the day.

secondly, recruiting can/will be an issue. however, winning cures all. we need to quickly establish ourselves as a force to reckon with. a school of choice. whether we are left behind in the wac or indendent we just need to win baby. we need to define ourselves as the warriors, a brand of football, a way to play this game defined like no other.

whether its the run n shoot, bone crushing defenses, the haka, whatever it is we need to separate ourselves and show the football world that we are warriors!

  20. Garret August 20, 2010 2:51 am

I’m not sure exactly what Nevada brings to the table. Small stadium. Small crowds. Bad weather. Fans don’t travel to bowls.

    ST,

Only *one* difference matters…Nevada has done significantly better on the field than UH in football over the past 2 years. Adding Nevada did not hurt the MWC’s computer ranking much at all. Adding UH would.

Results on the field matter. Nevada has it–they played for the WAC title in their season finale last season.

We say that UH needs to win. Nevada has already been doing that, at least in conference. You can also compare the scores against UNLV last season between UH and Nevada…big difference.

  21. G (China) August 20, 2010 2:53 am

Al, sorry I missed you too but really no need to apologize. Thanks for thinking of me. You guys are the best. Agreed winning cures all. Pretty encouraging hearing from Pride, Kekoa and BG (who just came back from the practice in the morning) how good the guys look. I’m excited as heck for the season to start. Best to you and your ohana.

  22. Garret August 20, 2010 2:54 am

I’ve posted a number times that these schools should have been invited

    ai-eee-soos,

I’m not sure if you were aware of this, but there has been a moratorium in place that has prevented D-IAA teams from moving to D-IA. Conferences have *not* been allowed to invite D-IAA teams to move up. So, the WAC couldn’t have done anything before now.

The moratorium is just about over, which is good timing for the WAC if they want to invite teams soon.

  23. Garret August 20, 2010 2:59 am

The San Luis Obispo newspaper seems to indicate that Cal Poly is not ready to move up to D-IA. They had been hoping that the WAC wouldn’t be inviting teams for a few more years so they would have time to get the money and other things ready.

Their President for 30 years just stepped down this summer and they had a problem with their search for a replacement. They have an interim President now who had been retired and hadn’t lived in California before. Until they get their new President, they basically are treading water and don’t have the money to move up.

  24. Garret August 20, 2010 3:02 am

If you look at the computer rankings and take out BSU, Nevada and Fresno were the top 2 teams in the WAC. Is it a big shock that the teams with the best performances on the football field were invited first? We’ve been saying that UH needs to win and those teams have won.

  25. Garret August 20, 2010 3:03 am

By the way, the 6’7″ OT that SMU didn’t admit will be playing for UCLA.

Jackson had signed with SMU but was not admitted even though he was an NCAA qualifier. He returned to Southern California and enrolled at El Camino College.

Jackson, who is 6 feet 7, 290 pounds, has been a constant presence at UCLA the last week and made his decision late Wednesday. He will enroll in January and participate in spring practice.

  26. Garret August 20, 2010 3:13 am

Even with Fresno and Nevada going to the MWC, it still appears that BYU is going independent. They would need games and it would be great for UH to get a 10-year deal with them. If UH goes independent that game can be played during the conference season, and if UH stays in the WAC then UH can make that game fill an opening…since other nonconference teams aren’t available due to conference title games, I’d bet that UH would love to end each season with BYU.

    Good morning Tsaiko Nation !

Fear not good folks of Hawaii fame and Glory as the

sun will rise over Manoa Valley, trade winds will brisk your

face during sunset hours and the smell of hibuscus flowers

will put a smile on your face as you have ONE special quality

that NO other mainland school has and that is “The Aloha Spirit” !

If the Pac 10, MWC, WCC or Big West wants to play in their alignment

of states and schools they choose to play “OH WELL” as in reality they

are missing out as IF you really think about it what better place to visit,

eat, sleep, compete and play in the GREATEST weather that ANY athlete can play

and that is “HAWAII NEI’ !

Paradise ball is just one word “AWESOME” as NO other place can offer scenic beauty,

hawaiian music and the most passionate people who cares for their diversity, culture

of enrichment, “The Ohana” and the GREATEST University that ANY ONE can receive an

education at the University Of Hawaii At Manoa !

Not Fresno manuer State, Boise State of potatoes or Nevada of desert lizards as

I don’t see no one talking about moving or vacationing to these “refugee cities

from the wac” as all they have to offer is just ATHLETICS and nothing more !

We will SURVIVE and continue to shine as this will all work out as this season

will be motivated by all coaches and athletes to BEAT these traitors to submission

and play our okole off for the PRIDE of all you LOYAL Tsaiko fans and the GREATNESS

of putting on that uniform with the name bearing on the front chest “Hawaii Rainbow Warrior” as NONE of the schools above can claim that !

“Simply The Best, Better Then All The Rest” !

Remember who you are and what you represent “THE OHANA” as that good folks of the

50th State brings PRIDE to my eyes and a GREAT smile on my face as when you wake

up this gorgeous morning, look around and see your treasures of life and listen to your

love of your people as that good folks of Tsaiko Nation is “PRICELESS” and NO other state,

city or school can claim this !

Have a GREAT day and kiss a kei kei for ME !

    IMUA WARRIORS !

  28. Garret August 20, 2010 3:21 am

I take it from some of the hints ST dropped near the end of yesterday’s blog that going independent might not be an option for UH due to the Big West and WCC not wanting UH’s non-football teams. That isn’t a big surprise I guess…I had been hoping that travel subsidies could sway the Big West, but it is hard to subsidize so many nonrevenue sports.

I know that schools like Santa Clara worry about class time being missed and the effect that the time burden has on student athletes. At that level of competition you have student-athletes who aren’t going to be going pro after college so they focus on their degrees.

  29. Garret August 20, 2010 3:53 am

Today’s Deseret News article on the BYU situation has some relevant tidbits.

Since an affiliation with the WAC appears to have been undermined after the defections of Fresno State and Nevada, BYU could strike a deal with another league — the West Coast Conference.

However, the WCC does not have softball, swimming, diving or track — sports that BYU competes in.

  30. Garret August 20, 2010 3:57 am

Another Deseret News article indicates that Utah State wants to go to the MWC now but they may not be invited again.

Reached Thursday evening, a source at USU said the door to the MWC is “still ajar” but called the situation “very complex.”

A second USU source agreed but said the MWC may no longer be willing to take USU.

“Never say never,” the source said, “but certainly not likely in the short term.”

  31. Garret August 20, 2010 3:59 am

Louisiana Tech is making public statements that are basically invitations for other conferences to invite them.

Louisiana Tech boasted about its lack of ties to any one conference or rival, as if sending a signal to any league with a potential opening. “Louisiana Tech has never been defined by its association with any one or two schools,” athletic director Bruce Van De Velde said. “We have positioned ourselves to be a strong and proud member of any conference.”

  32. Garret August 20, 2010 4:01 am

Nice summary of Idaho’s situation in the Idaho Statesman.

Idaho’s $13.3 million budget is tiny – by WAC standards. It fits right in with the WAC Lite. The number doesn’t figure to rise under this new configuration – at a time when the richest conferences and the new MWC schools bring in even more dollars.

The chasm gets bigger and bigger. The left-behinders get lapped.

  33. Garret August 20, 2010 4:04 am

If Utah State had taken the MWC’s offer, the WAC would have lost its NCAA basketball spot. That would have really hurt the conference! If *any* other team leaves the WAC, the WAC will lose its basketball spot and will have a much harder time getting others to join.

The NCAA requires conferences to have at least seven members – and six who have played together for at least five years (“continuity of membership”) – to retain automatic-qualifier status for men’s basketball. However, a conference that loses members gets a two-year grace period during which it can have six members.

  34. Garret August 20, 2010 4:06 am

After years of encouraging La Tech to go away, the WAC needs La Tech now to survive. Having to have 6 long-time members in a conference is tough when you are down to just 6 schools left.

Finding schools near Louisiana Tech will be critical. If La. Tech leaves – the Bulldogs have a stated desire to go to Conference USA if a spot opens – the WAC no longer will meet the “continuity of membership” provision.

  35. Hank August 20, 2010 4:22 am

    …WE make a pitch to the MWC…?

  37. Hank August 20, 2010 4:28 am

…the MWC wouldn’t take us even if we groveled and offered travel subsidies (i think its the nonfootball sports expenses that is why we’re unattractive)…

I hope our fb team/coaches don’t lose their concentration.

I’d like to see a concerted effort by everyone involved to get out there on the field of play and just give every team a whopping they won’t forget before they leave the conference, and to prove who’s the better team in the WAC no matter what comes down in the future.

    GO WARRIORS….TO THE END!!!

  41. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 5:15 am

Okay, I see there’s been anti-trust rulings with the NCAA, dating back to 1984 at least. One thing that stands out is that the NCAA has been protected as long as they are promoting amateurism and academics.

Can’t the WAC argue that all of these mergers, creating have-nots, may dissolve the conference, thereby diminishing funding to promote amateurism under Title IX, yada, yada, yada?

Even the most recent court rulings came before this summer’s changes to the collegiate landscape. The BCS and tv have altered and created a huge unbalance that not all states and territories can participate in. Aren’t we afforded some protection from discrimination?

Surely, there’s got to be lawyers, local politicians, and even members of Congress, who see the imbalance and are willing to push through a new ruling for equality? I fail to believe that a court ruling can’t be revisited and revised or thrown out.

  42. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 5:17 am

    Yeah, “unbalance” should’ve been “imbalance”… didn’t have my coffee yet… it’s brewing.

  43. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 5:31 am

Like I’ve said previously, to all the schools using “travel to Hawaii” as an excuse…

Show us your bottom line. Show us what it costs every year for all of your various sports teams to travel and play in Hawaii, with subsidies. Yes, include costs incurred for those tutors you had to bring along too, if you must. Now, don’t go making up stuff, and adding all kinds of new tutors and trainers and assistants and all that. I’m sure you have outstanding bookkeeping, otherwise, you wouldn’t have realized that travel to Hawaii is so expensive to begin with.

Then, for the years you played football at Aloha Stadium, show us what you made from that extra scheduled game, if you did schedule an extra game to take advantage of the Hawaii Exemption. If you didn’t, then that’s your fault for not taking advantage to make more money.

Why am I asking this? Well, we’d like to see if therre’s any other way that we can help you out in this situation.

    Oh yeah, one more thing…

We travel to all of your places, and we spend more time and costs traveling than all of you combined. Yet, we still find a way to get things done, excel on the field, win championships, perform exceptionally well on our APR’s, and spread our aloha spirit with you, even while you all are screwing us in the back.

By the way, have a nice day.

  44. Bulla August 20, 2010 5:32 am

bad manners, good morning Hank, MC, Cliff, Michigan Warrior, and Garret….hope all is well with you. sometimes you just want this bad dream to get over…………..whew……… 🙁

  46. d1島 August 20, 2010 5:36 am

    Garret,

As always, Mucho Mahalo for posting so many sources of info….

  47. d1島 August 20, 2010 5:41 am

Yeah, I know we should be nice to them and all now that the WAC needs LaTech to stick around, but how much does this just make you think, “Ho!”

“Louisiana Tech has never been defined by its association with any one or two schools,” athletic director Bruce Van De Velde said. “We have positioned ourselves to be a strong and proud member of any conference.”

Several “positions” come to mind with that statement…and some even can be related to the WAC (missionary, cowboy, doggie…)

  48. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 5:41 am

Yeah, for real… Goooooood Morning, everybody!!!

  49. HNL August 20, 2010 5:46 am

The problem is peoples atitude toward hawaii, years ago at a b-ball tournament espn asked a prominent coach about Hawaii and their problem with getting schools to play them because of travel, yet Hawaii travels thousands of miles every year and has to deal with it 100x more. Coach said, thats their problem if they want to be in div. 1a. I don’t care.

  50. d1島 August 20, 2010 5:46 am

Does anyone else see this as problematic for the WAC’s situation with regard to the NCAA BB tourneys?

The NCAA requires conferences to have at least seven members – and six who have played together for at least five years (“continuity of membership”) – to retain automatic-qualifier status for men’s basketball. However, a conference that loses members gets a two-year grace period during which it can have six members.

Does this mean that no matter what happens after the grace period, the WAC is out of AQ status for the BB tourneys?

  51. expat August 20, 2010 5:47 am

Other than their record Nevada brings a natural in-state rivalry with UNLV to the table. Fresno brings less I think.

The biggest problem is, as ST pointed out, the lack of teams available. All the west coast schools are already wrapped up. If you go east towards LaTech the travel thing really becomes a pain — and not just with travel to Hawaii. Idaho is pretty isolated. It would be helpful for NMSU if the WAC added teams in Texas. Ideally the WAC stays together and goes to 12 with and east and west conference and then a title game. That could help reduce travel costs. Realistically it would be tough to get 6 more teams.

  52. Hank August 20, 2010 5:48 am

    …aloha kakahiaka…

  53. Last Call August 20, 2010 5:48 am

See our sports page today “Hawaii is still weighing options” Now hold on a second if I remember correctly back when Boise State left I remember our AD saying, We are looking at our options in case others leave. How frick’n long does it take to weight a few options ?

  54. d1島 August 20, 2010 5:51 am

    expat,

    Fresnecks bring natural in-state raisins!

….and don’t forget about that Garlic Festival in Gilroy! (that smells, too)

  55. Bigislandkurt August 20, 2010 5:54 am

Where ever we end up, one thing is key — Just win baby. If we don’t become the bulls of a depleted/revamped WAC then we don’t have too much room to complain. I’m talking mainly about football.

One would think that there are some legal implications in all of this. Unleash the lawyers.

    BIK

  56. Hank August 20, 2010 5:54 am

….if independent…i think BYU, Navy, UNLV, Utah State, Utah, and everyone else who recruits Hawaii would be interested in playing us regularly…

….i like a UNLV rivalry because we go donate money to their city everyday…

  57. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 5:56 am

I believe, if we lose that automatic spot, we’d end up relying solely on RPI and an at-large bid. And if we do get replacements into the conference, we still all need to be one group of six teams for five continuous years. If anyone else leaves in thsoe five years, and we get any newer replacements, the five-year clock begins anew.

And all this after such a good spring and summer! That is what’s so frustrating! We finally look to be moving forward… and then.. WHAM!

  58. Garret August 20, 2010 5:56 am

    Michigan Warrior,

If you think about it, UH *has* to travel to the mainland to play, but the mainland teams do not need to travel to Hawaii to find teams to play.

If you look at UH’s budget compared to the rest of the WAC, UH spends a *lot* more and has facilities that aren’t maintained as well. A big line item in UH’s budget is *travel*, which is understandable. If it costs UH a lot to travel to the mainland, we can assume that it costs them a lot to travel to Hawaii. And I know for a fact that hotel rooms are more expensive in Hawaii than in places like Reno, Vegas, Boise, Fresno, Las Cruces (or stay in El Paso and make the easy drive), etc.

Most mainland schools have at least a school or two that they can take a bus to. Save on airfare and on the luggage charges that have now been added. Cal even took a bus to play a game at the Rose Bowl! There is a reason why lower division schools take buses to most or all of their games.

Only about half of the WAC teams recently seem to have played an extra game in years that they played at Aloha Stadium. The most common reason cited was because they needed an extra bye week. When you consider that most WAC teams are happily signing up for $1 million payday games at big stadiums, their not taking the extra $1 million says a lot about the need for the bye week.

The bottom line is that just *2* sports matter for conference realignment, with football being 80% to 90% and men’s basketball being the rest. UH picked a bad time to be subpar in both sports over the past 2 years.

The fact is that UH’s computer ranking over the past 2 years would hurt the MWC try to get BCS AQ status. The computers don’t care about travel time, travel costs, etc., so this is a fair measure to judge UH. The fact is that the basketball team has been even worse and that seriously hurts UH’s appeal to non-football conferences. If UH had been a Gonzaga-like power in basketball, the Big West and WCC would be tripping over themselves to invite UH…kind of like how the WCC gave an open invitation to BYU.

I had been hoping and praying that realignment would not happen for at least 2 years. That is how things seemed until earlier this week, since Fresno and Nevada did not get invited to the MWC then. Give UH 2 more years and the football team has a chance to do better and I believe that Gib will get the basketball team to a good level quickly. There have been a *lot* of things being done in the background, both by the Legislature and businesses, that would have put UH in a better position…but the time ran out too quickly.

I like the idea of the WAC merging with C-USA mentioned by a previous post. Someone should pitch this idea to the tv stations broadcasting C-USA games, including ESPN. This idea should be presented to the conference commissioners and ADs. The idea of three divisions of C-USA spanning the country is a “out of the box” idea which is bound to attract those who control tv broadcasts.

  60. Garret August 20, 2010 5:57 am

    d1shima,

I should thank you for handling things so well on the blog. Your “mercy rule” post made me laugh last night…and I really needed to lighten my mood then.

  61. Pomai August 20, 2010 5:57 am

I too think the ncaa needs to step up to the plate on this, maybe it’s time for them to tell the courts, we tried it your way an see where it got us, we need to take control back an not let the outside forces bring down college sports.

I don’t care what the MWC says they are out to destroy the WAC, notice they have not gone after any other conference, an I am sure there are other schools in other conference’s that look better than the three they went after.

Not 100% sure that being independent is not a good option? Need to see who steps up if we would explore that route

  62. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 5:57 am

Sorry, my typing is horrendous today… I think my keyboard has arthritis, and it’s acting up.

  63. d1島 August 20, 2010 5:59 am

    MW,

That’s great! Given our track record with the NCAA, no problem-o…. 👿

….I guess that means no chance for representation on any Selection Cmte either?

  64. Garret August 20, 2010 6:01 am

    airsumo,

Unfortunately, ESPN is trying to merge the MWC with the C-USA. The teams that ESPN were interested in (according to the articles I read) from the WAC are already going to be in the MWC. That kind of indicates UH’s value to ESPN.

I had been hopeful for the 3-division C-USA idea…but, it looks like ESPN trumped my idea by going for a MWC/C-USA combo. One idea I saw was for the MWC to go to 12 teams and C-USA go to 12 teams, so they would have 4 divisions, 2 title games, and then 1 big game for an AQ spot. It makes sense…Fresno, BSU, Nevada, and La Tech were included in that plan.

  65. Garret August 20, 2010 6:05 am

I agree with Bigislandkurt that UH just needs to win. Actually, just 1 team needs to win, the football team.

I don’t agree with the point about how the lawyers could do anything. The courts said this has to be a free market and that is what is being done. If C-USA/MWC gets included in the BCS, then only a small percentage of teams won’t have an AQ chance.

There is a reason why the BCS made sure to have more teams in AQ conferences than not in AQ conferences at the D-IA level. Now if they add C-USA and MWC to the AQ system, they will have an overwhelming percentage of the vote.

  66. Garret August 20, 2010 6:07 am

I believe, if we lose that automatic spot, we’d end up relying solely on RPI and an at-large bid.

That would be hard with the RPI values of the teams left in the WAC. However, if the WAC holds on to its 6 teams, they will keep the NCAA spot. If Utah State or La Tech goes…the NCAA spot is gone. Scary thing that I didn’t want to post about until today.

  67. Hank August 20, 2010 6:07 am

…we’d be attractive to espn if we’d win….

  68. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 6:07 am

I agree, Garret. Our timing couldn’t have been any worse. Another two years, and I feel like we’re more than worthy of a doubletake. At any rate, it is of utmost importance that we win as big as possible (in football and basketball, at least) these next couple of years. We have to look out for number one. Academically, we’re better off than the two schools that the PAC10 just added. In fact, didn’t Colorado just lose scholarships due to their poor grades? We see how PAC10 teams regularly travel to Hawaii. Their BCS money plus scheduling an extra home game makes it easier for them, compared to mid-majors having to make the trip. If we can shift it into overdrive and tear through the next two years, I say we keep knocking on the PAC10’s door. We already fit in nicely with some sports, we’re there academically, and they don’t whine when having to fly to Hawaii in various sports. (Or at least not yet, anyway. Who knows if it would start up if they HAD to travel to Hawaii on an annual basis?)

  69. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 6:09 am

Then our OoC schedules will have to be monstrous!!! I think we have to schedule in anticipation of the conference collapsing, rather than schedule soft, waiting to see if it does fall apart.

  70. Garret August 20, 2010 6:11 am

    Last Call,

What options does UH have? Those types of statements are normally just to make the fans feel better and puff up the school a little. But really there aren’t many options. JD called the Pac-10 four months or so ago. The MWC isn’t going to talk with UH. JD called another D-IA conference (which has to be C-USA) and was told they are full (they already have 12 teams and La Tech is in line already).

What would you like JD to say? He could say “$%#$ we are in deep kim chee”…but that would make UH appear even weaker and not accomplish anything. Trying to appear as strong as possible is pretty much all UH and the WAC can do. If the Big West and WCC won’t take UH in, UH has to hope that the WAC survives.

  71. d1島 August 20, 2010 6:11 am

    Okay, it’s settled then….

    WIN WARRIORS!

  72. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 6:12 am

Yes, but discrimination isn’t okay if the majority aren’t affected… even if one is discriminated against, it’s discrimination. Percentages have nothing to do with it.

  73. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 6:14 am

Sorry, had to say it… we’ve been living on the outskirts of Detroit for far too long, and we hear this stuff on an almost daily basis.

  74. Garret August 20, 2010 6:15 am

…we’d be attractive to espn if we’d win….

I agree with Hank. ESPN already showed how they would feature UH when UH was winning and had high-profile players like Colt or Chang. ESPN also showed this year that the only game they wanted with UH was the one against USC.

Win and the conferences want you.

    Win and TV wants you.

Win and the fans come to your games in greater numbers.

The option is not to file a lawsuit that won’t save the Athletic Department. The option is death for the athletic department. Win or lose everything. UH probably has a year or two to turn things around. One more bad football year would mean that UH’s computer rating would be radioactive until 2014. Can UH’s nonrevenue teams afford that?

  75. Annoddah Dave August 20, 2010 6:17 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

    “You had me at ‘Hello'”!

The new vision, if that is possible, should be to hold together as a conference. All members will need to do as most Tsaiko Blog Dogs have said…WIN! Beat the crap out of every non-conference foe and raise the cachet of the WAC!! The byline for WAC=Win @ All Cost!

Warriors may even have to concede to playing more away games within the WAC to help others with travel costs, etc.

It’s only a vision, but loyalty often has a way of winning out, right Jerry??? Rod Tidwell where are you??!!! I love you man!!!??

  76. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 6:17 am

How many schools are there, and what sports can we compete in, when looking towards the Far East?

If we have to lose football, I don’t see how we will remain in D-1. None of the western conferences want us either. Almost looks like we end up playing friendly games with schools in Japan, Korea, and China, like we do in exhibition games already in several sports.

  77. Bigislandkurt August 20, 2010 6:18 am

Ok, maybe UH should have it’s own Jet and Hotel.

I think the worst thing about it all is how the rest of the country don’t give a sh** about UH. Sure, we’ve heard a few people pop up and say “I feel bad for Hawaii” and all, but when it all comes down to it, people on the national college football landscape could care less if UH football withers away and dies. Think about it, the USU to MWC scenario is not over yet. This could actually get a little worse.

It’s just sad how Everyone has been a part of conference realignment talks….even folks like New Mexico and USU. All accept Hawaii. It’s almost like small kid time when we would get together and choose teams at recess to play kickball or football. Hawaii is the kid that don’t get chosen. And damn that sucks.

That is the sheer reality of how the rest of the country treats Hawaii. The only importance we have (to them) is that we are 1) a military outpost and 2) America’s proverbial swimming pool or golf course — always there when you need that dream vacation or tv sitcom. But that’s about it. Aside from that, we just don’t matter to people who are not from here. Hawaii always wants to run with the big kids, but always keep getting relegated to the small kid table. Why do we worry about things like this? I don’t know, but we do. It occupies a great piece of our psyche, our national self-worth per se…when it comes to business, or sports, or education, we are always trying to be “like the mainland.” That ‘aint gonna change anytime soon. Here is a prime example of not hating the player, hate the game.

These MWC powers, presidents, NCAA folks are proven chicken sh**. $$$ makes the world go ’round and when you live in the world of $$$, a soul is not required. Yet I can only feel that if it was us who got the invite, there wouldn’t be too many of us who would be saying “poor San jose” or “Poor New MExico state.” SUch is the name of the game and once again, we find ourselves on the junk end of the ledger. NOBODY, I mean NOBODY on the national scene has come to bat for Hawaii.

    BIK

  78. CoolEthan August 20, 2010 6:23 am

The last thing UH needs is something more to manange.

Hawaiian air should strike a deal with UH and for other teams visiting.

  79. Garret August 20, 2010 6:24 am

Yes, but discrimination isn’t okay if the majority aren’t affected… even if one is discriminated against, it’s discrimination. Percentages have nothing to do with it.

I agree that discrimination is wrong. But is it discrimination that UH gets lower TV ratings than schools like BSU? Is it discrimination that it takes much longer to fly to Hawaii? Is it discrimination that UH’s computer ratings in football and basketball are bad? Is it discrimination that it costs more to fly to Hawaii than to take a bus to an opponent?

Are we saying that it is discrimination that Ohio State makes $22 million more in TV money per year than Miami of Ohio? That Florida makes $20 million more in TV money per year than Central Florida? That has nothing to do with the BCS or bowl games–that is regular season money. Texas has a much smaller TV contract than any Big 10 or SEC team but gets the most money ($130 million) because their fans pay crazy prices for tickets…are the fans discriminating when they don’t care about Rice and pay that money for Texas?

The BCS money is actually being given to non-AQ conferences far more than what the market says they should be getting. That BCS money could never be earned by almost all of the non-AQ teams because the big bowls couldn’t get the TV ratings and fan support, so if they took away the BCS system and went to the free market then schools like UH would get *less* money. Every game with WAC or MWC teams is in the bottom TV for TV ratings for the BCS bowls…the BCS money would start to decrease for everyone if TV ratings like that continue.

Time for work…hope I can concentrate today. Big stuff happening.

  80. CoolEthan August 20, 2010 6:24 am

Just WIN and everything is hunky dory

  81. Hilo Moon August 20, 2010 6:25 am

I’m trying to convince myself that “winning isn’t everything” , something that we were taught a long time ago. I’m trying to apply that concept to the WAC “traitors” and I just can’t … so frustrating. I agree with those who believe that the main reason FSU and Nevada got invited to the MSF is that they WIN!

By the way, how is the fallout froma ll this WAC breakup going to affect last school year’s UH NCAA finalists (volleyball, softball, track) — the wonderful Na Wahine?

  82. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 6:29 am

Maybe we need to look at ourselves, collectively. The costs to fly over, stay in hotels, eat, everything has been going up, true. But has it been going up to keep up with inflation, or because of union perks, or what? Are there concessions we could make that would bring costs back down, short of the economy turning around? What can we, as a state, do to control these things? I mean, even the NFL has issues with us, and they got money. Are we overcharging potential visitors? I’m sure the whole tourism sector has been working together to make Hawaii a more attractive place to vacation… or, am I just being naive in that assumption?

  83. postmanke August 20, 2010 6:31 am

Go Independent, road might be a little bumpy.. With the right business savvy person running the show the options are wide open. All- Star nominations? you still can be an All-American if you play for an Independent, no?

Doesn’t matter where you play.. just win! Win every WAC game no matter what!

  84. CoolEthan August 20, 2010 6:33 am

  86. Paka August 20, 2010 6:53 am

This kind of sums up how mainland kids look at the trip to Hawaii. We had our kickoff luncheon the other day, and on the bus ride back, I was talking with some of our players. Every one of them said the same thing. “I hope we can go back to Hawaii for the Bowl game. That’s the best place to go unless you go to a BCS game. The only thing that sucks is the plane ride over.”

  87. Old School Dave August 20, 2010 6:53 am

Just my 3 cents (inflation). Being proactive regarding the football program ($$ maker that drives the AD) and possible Independent status will be the key to overcoming the current state of affairs – can you say frequent flier miles? Direct flights from HNL to Chicago (to play Notre Dame) – 8 hrs. Direct flights to Dallas FW (to play the Texas Schools) -7:30 hrs, Direct flights to Salt Lake City (Utah, BYWHO) 6:30 hrs. UH Road Warriors. Have to laugh at these coaches who whine about the trip to Hawaii – oh da poor buggahs. UH does it 5-6 times every football season.

  88. haka August 20, 2010 6:57 am

  89. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 6:58 am

Of course none of that is discrimination. But what is discriminatory is to exclude schools to participate in promoting amateurism, which is what will happen if the WAC folds and we’re left standing in the rain. No one wants us for football, and the western conferences don’t want the added expenses of annual travel to Hawaii for their non-revenue sports. Flying, bussing, none of it is discriminatory. It’s an excuse given to justify the discrimination. Excluding a group of certain opportunities that are available to others, irregardless of circumstances, that’s always been my understanding of discrimination. We hear all kinds of excuses for people discriminating against others every day. Their reasons for doing it (I was raised this way; it’s too far to fly; doesn’t excuse them for doing it. It still ends up happening anyway, and needs to be stopped. Yes, the BCS has added more non-AQ participation recently. But it’s not 100% participation yet.

So, do we step down from all sports? Do we run a purely academic institution, after the history we’ve built? I still fail to see that there’s no legal argument here somewhere.

As far as exposure, when Coach Jones came in, we chose to air our games in the middle of the night, in a deal with ESPN. If our games started around noon, as many games here do, we’d be seen, or at least mentioned, during prime time on the East Coast. We opted for that late night contract for ESPN’s money. Now, since we’re losing ESPN, we should go to late morning, early afternoon game starts. We play on the mainland when it’s freezing, snowing, whatever. It’s time they enjoyed our climate, while sitting in the lovely Hawaiian sun.

  90. Slugger August 20, 2010 7:00 am

    Good morning!

  91. expat August 20, 2010 7:03 am

Garret made a good point about conference travel. With the 6 remaining WAC members none are really within driving distance of each other. Idaho and Utah State are closest to each other at about 11 hours driving time. That is brutal, especially for the non-rev sports.

  92. Stephen Tsai August 20, 2010 7:07 am

Going to the NCAA now and asking for help is like getting your butt beat in a fight and then asking your older brother to step in.

The WAC was willing to raid the MWC. Can’t complain now that the MWC came back with a bigger counter punch.

  93. Stephen Tsai August 20, 2010 7:09 am

I believed it Wednesday morning and I believe it now: the WAC should not have tried to bring in a non-football BYU. I didn’t think it would end up this way, but the whole BYU situation was the spark of this wild fire.

It doesn’t mean anything now, but by raiding Boise, Fresno and Nevada, the MWC is acknowledging, by its actions, that the WAC was the better league.

  94. chopsueyboy August 20, 2010 7:14 am

time to change kickoff times back to the late start

and force WAC teams to pay for an extra night in Hawaii

  95. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 7:15 am

Actually, ST, now that you mention it… I think there would be bad blood for any school(s) that would be forced to put Hawaii into their conference/schedule when they are presently adamantly against us.

All we can do is win in everything for the next two years, and hope that some schools come up with funding to step up and join the conference.

As conniving as the MWC has been, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them boot SDSU and UNLV AFTER they get their AQ status confirmed. Then, as long as LaTech stays, we’d just need five years with the newer schools so that we can retain our auto bid in basketball.

  96. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 7:18 am

Why move the start times even later? We already have to stay up until 3:30-4:00 am just to watch what’s been scheduled. No casual UH fan will watch us then. We want exposure, we have to go to an earlier start time, when the rest of the country is still up.

  97. CoolEthan August 20, 2010 7:19 am

Forcing teams to stay an extra night is like implicating another tax during recession times.

  98. Hank August 20, 2010 7:25 am

…from what i understand, BYU approached the wac and not visa versa…no?…

  99. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 7:25 am

I still wish FSU and Nevada would come back to us and bring BYU’s non-revenue sports along. Then have BSU change their minds too. No matter what, though… our cellar teams are still deep down there, including our basketball team. I wonder, how long before they can change their minds about leaving the WAC for the MWC? I’d love for us to run the table this year and next, and have our lower level teams pull off surprises… all due to the fire and threat of possible extinction. That might be the only way to get them back. Then, lock everyone into a minimal-year contract with a 10-mil (or more) buyout, payable in full before the start of the next fiscal year.

  100. Hank August 20, 2010 7:27 am

…too much money they have to share for BYU to stay with the mwc…must be nice to have your own tv station and a nation with members everywhere…

    …and of course, they win…

  101. Pomai August 20, 2010 7:29 am

#93 St – I don’t know about that, If I was getting my butt beat by the bully of the school and my big brother stepped in to help me out, I think I would be happy about that. Hey who wants to get thier butt beat, plus big brothers are supposed to look out for their little brothers.

  102. Pomai August 20, 2010 7:34 am

It doesn’t mean anything now, but by raiding Boise, Fresno and Nevada, the MWC is acknowledging, by its actions, that the WAC was the better league.

Hmmm…not so sure ’bout that. It definitely means they thought the top of the WAC was better than the bottom of the MWC.

Like MW suggests, if I was SDSU and UNLV (maybe UNM and the Cowpokes, too) I’d stay close to the walls and not let anyone get behind me.

After reading and hearing about the latest defection, I too feel devastated and upset by the departure. I understand the economic picture presented by the school that’s leaving so with that in mind I say we move our game back to the latter time slot. Let’s accommodate all the fans who have not left and still sticking with the warriors. Why are we concerned about teams like fresco spending another night or whatever their excuse might be. They had no thought of us when they decided to bolt. Hawaii is always trying to take care of other because its the Hawaiian way well maybe we need to be kinder to ourselves and all those who care for UH. I doubt that the MWC can remove SDSU or UNLV — even if they wanted to, which they probably don’t. Those schools would have to elect to leave or give the conference some kind of excuse like dropping football.

One question I have is what is the status of BSU, FSU, and Nevada regarding voting in the WAC? They are all still member institutions — with FSU and Nevada apparently around for two more years. Do they still get full votes within the WAC even though they have officially committed to moving on?

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Thank you ST! That’s what I was trying to say last night, you just said it more eloquently. That’s why you’re the writer and I’m the statisician.

  120. d1島 August 20, 2010 8:34 am

Just recalled that in the presser yesterday Benson said something about looking or moving East.

I think this was in response to a question about keeping LaTech happy. Anyone else remember hearing that?

If true, wouldn’t that further diminish Hawaii’s presence/standing in the conference?

Mountain West Strategizes with Conference USA

By Mick McGrane on August 20, 2010 1:27 PM | No TrackBacks

Followed- up on various media reports regarding a potential Mountain West Conference-Conference USA merger. Confirmed that representatives of both leagues did indeed meet yesterday in Colorado Springs. Included were Commissioner Craig Thompson, Commissioner Britton Banowsky (who have a long-standing personal and professional relationship), and a couple MWC Athletics Directors. The informal gathering, which was previously scheduled, covered a wide range of topics, including concepts regarding television, scheduling and the BCS. Yet another example of the Mountain West’s ongoing strategic thinking on a number of fronts, as the league continues to position itself in the national landscape.

  124. isleboy August 20, 2010 8:47 am

ST….according to Fresno State football play by play announcer Paul Swearington Hawaii has been in

discussions with Mountain West about getting invitation……apparently whatevah Hawaii

offered was not good enough……TRAVEL Subsidies????? Ken Mortimer stopped travel subsidies and that was one of primary reasons Hawaii was not included in current Mountain

    West…….

Being in a conference just to be in a conference is like having a hairy women. At least you got a woman. Well, sometimes you don’t need a hairy woman – no woman, no crime.

Benson has been outsmarted numerous times as head of the WAC. Yet we still want to stay with him? Schools have run away from us, stuck us in the shorts – twice now in recent years, yet we still want to go with our same strategy?

Isn’t insanity doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result?

Do we really think top recruits will come to UH to do battle with San Jose, Texas San Antonio and LA Tech?

Surely I ain’t got all the answers, all I know is:

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away.

Now it looks as though they’re here to stay.

    Oh, I believe in yesterday.

    Suddenly,

I’m not half the man I used to be,

There’s a shadow hanging over me,

    Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Stakeholders can include Airlines, government, Hotels, Visitor Destinations too!

Hawaii needs to see itself as an ASSET to athletics.

time to change kickoff times back to the late start

and force WAC teams to pay for an extra night in Hawaii

chopsueyboy — I hope it happens, but if it does, it would not be for the relatively minor expense of a night’s lodging. There are other issues like the visiting team get home earlier (which, BTW, could be addressed by an adjustment by an airline to depart their red-eye a hour or two later). I think the main reason would be to improve ticket sales at the stadium.

Speaking as a season ticket holder who will have the sun in my eyes for the entire first half of the UH-USC game — the sun does not set until 6:48 PM with a 5:00 game start — I long for the days of the 7:00 PM game start, when the atmosphere was carnival-like and we could eat dinner at 6:00 PM rather than 3:00 PM….and then hit the night spots after. OK, this one is for TV $$$$

I don’t want to sound petty, but can we move the October 16 Nevada game to 6:30 PM? ESPN’s not involved and we can cite UH ticket sales and financial issues–which clearly in not a concern to Nevada.

  134. CoolEthan August 20, 2010 9:10 am

  135. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 20, 2010 9:13 am

If The Powers That Be within the University of Hawai`i System agree to pick up the costs to bring D-1A teams to Hawai`i to play not only football but also all the other sports, then how will the bills be paid?

There are currently three $$$ resources – increased advertising sales & other types of corporate underwriting; increased ticket prices; legislative allocations funded by taxes.

Perhaps the first could be done over the next couple of years. As for the other two, increasing prices without offering something valuable in return is highly unlikely to result in increased revenues. And as for expecting the taxpayers to front the costs is about as likely to happen as the sun rising in the west and setting in the east.

Another option independent of UH which is being explored is to look at creating Hawa`i as an international sports venue.

The following announcement was sent out yesterday by the Hawai`i Tourism Authority yesterday.

Hawai’i To Host 2012 World Vintage Rugby Carnival

HONOLULU-The Hawai’i Tourism Authority (HTA), the state’s tourism agency, is pleased to announce that Hawai’i will host the 2012 World Vintage Rugby Carnival. The seven-day event to be held in Honolulu, is the first of its kind to be held in the United States and is expected to bring more than 1,500 veteran players and supporters to the islands.

“We look forward to hosting this first-time event to the United States that will increase Hawai’i’s sports presence on a global level and inject a boost to our tourism economy,” said Mike McCartney, president and CEO of HTA. “Sporting events such as this not only have a positive economic impact on tourism for our state, but also generate invaluable media coverage worldwide and enhance our resident’s and visitor’s quality of life, providing opportunities for enthusiasts to attend, participate or volunteer.”

HTA played an instrumental role in meeting and coordinating with local organizing groups and event planners, bringing stakeholders together to make Hawai’i’s winning bid for the Rugby Carnival possible, including beating out other destinations who boast a larger number of rugby followers. Hawai’i Tourism Oceania, HTA’s marketing partner, will also be providing marketing support for the event.

More than 60 teams from countries including Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, England, France, Spain, Germany, South America, Australia, and South Africa are expected to participate in the 2012 Rugby Carnival. Included in the week-long event are three playing days, two major social functions and island sightseeing and activities.

“Vintage rugby is a rapidly growing international movement for mature rugby players,” said Cormac O’Carroll, president of Hawaii Sports Inc., a local sports event management company assisting with coordination of the event. “We would like to thank HTA for their vision and support in bringing this emerging and exciting sport to Hawai’i.”

The 2012 Carnival will have two categories for participation, men ages 35-45 years and men ages 46 years and over. Previouscarnivals have been held in Ireland (2004), Argentina (2006), New Zealand (2008), and South Africa (2010).

The Hawai’i Tourism Authority was created in 1998 to ensure a successful visitor industry well into the future. Its mission is to strategically manage Hawai’i tourism in a sustainable manner consistent with our economic goals, cultural values, preservation of natural resources, community desires, and visitor industry needs. Well over a year ago, the head of HTA’s Sports Tourism department, the second in command in UH Athletic Department’s Administration, and a faculty member at UH’s School of Travel Industry Management specializing in niche tourism were sent a joint e-mail requesting that the three of them work together to develop a comprehensive UH sports marketing program which included accommodations, attractions & touris, and meals for the fans & supporters of the more than 100 teams that fly Hawai`i to compete in D-1A intercollegiate athletics.

Included in the request was information about three different funding sources to underwrite the costs of preparing the report and even implementing the program once it was ready to market.

No one has responded to inquiries over the past six months as to what has been accomplished. Perhaps one of the sportswriters in the Honolulu Star Advertiser might be able to find out what, if anything, happened with the suggestion.

  136. el guapo August 20, 2010 9:20 am

Or add Monroe and Lafayette? For football, go on a 2 week roadtrip. For other sports, if you’re going all the way to LA anyway, why not for 3 games?

  137. Garret August 20, 2010 9:32 am

From what I read, UH offered to pay travel subsidies to the MWC and the MWC declined.

  138. Kazz August 20, 2010 9:34 am

    Garret,

Jim Donovan was on the Bobby Curran Show this morning and confirmed what you read.

  139. Garret August 20, 2010 9:34 am

I’m glad that MWC website information was posted (very interesting that the MWC commissioner and the C-USA commissioner are friends and have worked well together before), which furthers what we talked about last night about the MWC/C-USA combo. Here is the CBS take on it:

This would not be a merger between Conference USA and the MWC, but a play-in game to advance to the BCS after both leagues decided their conference champions. Conference USA already stages a conference championship game. The Mountain West is in a state of flux as BYU decides if it wants to leave the league and play as an independent in football. Fresno State and Nevada accepted invitations to join the MWC this week, supposedly beginning in 2012. Since it’s not certain how many members the MWC will have going forward, it’s not certain if it will attempt to stage a conference championship game of its own.

A play-in game could mean at least one of those leagues would be playing 15 games in a season, counting a conference title game, BCS play-in game and bowl game.

  140. Garret August 20, 2010 9:35 am

    Kazz,

That is sad. I was hoping that what I read was untrue, but if JD confirmed it then there is no MWC option for UH.

  141. Garret August 20, 2010 9:36 am

UH can offer money…but it cannot make the football team’s record better for the past 2 years.

  142. OldDiver August 20, 2010 9:36 am

Maybe it’s about time the NCAA relax it’s rule on the numbers of teams D1 schools must have. Times have changed, cost have changed. Enforcing the sixteen team rule is one of the few rules the NCAA is able to enforce. Only a fraction of all athletic departments make money. Leave it up to the Universities or their conferences to decide how many teams they must field.

  143. Garret August 20, 2010 9:36 am

The WAC was so close to having a great deal with BYU. Look at how the games would have been schedule…BYU would have filled UH’s 2011 puka!

WAC commissioner Karl Benson said Friday that the league had a schedule of games for BYU against WAC members to help fill the Cougars’ 2011 season.

    They were:

    • BYU at Fresno State;

    • BYU at Hawaii;

    • Utah State at BYU;

    • Nevada at BYU;

    • San Jose State at BYU;

    • New Mexico State at BYU.

Of those WAC teams, the Cougars had been slated to play only in-state, nonconference rival Utah State in 2011.

  144. Darren August 20, 2010 9:37 am

Were the offered travel subsidies for all sports, or only football?

  145. Kazz August 20, 2010 9:37 am

Also this morning on the Bobby Curran Show, JD said that he had a staff meeting with ALL UH head coaches and asked them to prepare their thoughts of the pros and cons of all situations considered like independency, going to other conferences, etc as it pertains to each coaches respective sports program.

Jim Donovan has said that he believes sports like Rainbow Wahine volleyball and softball can actually go independent based on their strength. Whether he means that as national perception or track record overall against non-conference opponents and road records, I am not sure. But then JD goes on to say that while HE thinks they can go indy, he is not sure if the program themselves would want to go independent.

  146. Sharon Milbrandt August 20, 2010 9:38 am

    interesting site!

  147. Garret August 20, 2010 9:38 am

The WCC wants BYU, not UH. If BYU turns them down, will they offer UH the same deal?

West Coast Conference commissioner Jamie Zaninovich is pursuing BYU as a full member, save football, as well, but said again Friday he hasn’t heard from the Cougars’ administration after reaching out this week.

  148. Kazz August 20, 2010 9:38 am

    Darren,

I *think* JD was only referring to subsidies for football.

  149. Garret August 20, 2010 9:39 am

Sounds like North Texas turned the WAC down again and only the 2 Texas D-IAA schools want to move up.

The most interested schools are Texas-San Antonio and Texas State. Benson said the league has made multiple attempts to invite the Sun Belt’s North Texas to no avail. Other schools that have been in contact such as Montana, Montana State, Sacramento State, Cal Poly and UC Davis would have to decide if they want to bump up their programs into the Football Bowl Subdivision.

  150. Garret August 20, 2010 9:39 am

    Darren,

What I read was UH offered travel subsidies for all sports. That could be wrong and anyone who heard the JD interview would know the full story.

  151. Kazz August 20, 2010 9:40 am

The WCC wants BYU Cougar football too?

No wonder they haven’t heard back from BYU!

However, they do threaten to snatch BYU’s other sports though…

  152. Garret August 20, 2010 9:41 am

    Kazz,

The WCC wants all of BYU’s non-football teams…UH would love that option.

  153. Kazz August 20, 2010 9:41 am

    Garret and Darren,

I heard the interview but at that time I was about to hit the shower to get ready for work so I decided to yank the radio from my room to the bathroom and as soon as I plugged it in I think I may have missed JD’s full comment regardin subsidies.

But I think they were talking football so I just assume it was only for football.

  154. Shoko August 20, 2010 9:43 am

Can’t really blame NT to turn down an offer to join the WAC. As it is right now, the WAC is a sinking ship.

  155. Kazz August 20, 2010 9:43 am

    Garret,

Has the Big West taken any stance on the issue? I haven’t read or heard anything.

  156. al August 20, 2010 9:43 am

game start time…don’t be surprised if in the future, kickoff will be at 3 pm. this to accommodate tv. this relates to 6 pm west coast and 9 pm east coast.

  157. Darren August 20, 2010 9:44 am

Thanks Kazz…it’d probably need to be more than that. If ticket prices gotta go up for that, so be it. Rather have that than pay the same to watch UH play some directional school conference opponent. We should be calling Craig Thompson on a pretty regular basis (kiss his toes, wash his car, etc.)

We’re only 2 years into the BCS review process…half way through with still this year and next to go. In that sense we gotta win now, because there’s more changes likely within the next 2 years.

  158. Garret August 20, 2010 9:44 am

When the MWC heard what would be happening, their AD went to Philly where Comcast is located to work on the TV portion, and then went to meet with the C-USA commissioner. Craig Thompson deserves credit for doing his job well and really going for big things.

  159. Garret August 20, 2010 9:46 am

    Kazz,

The Big West hasn’t said anything, but BYU hasn’t even contacted them. I’d be willing to guess that JD called them and JD’s decision to try to prop up the WAC could indicate what type of response UH got.

I’m not sure if anyone remembers, but I posted an article here a few months ago about how the Big West schools were having major budget problems and looking to cut costs. UH would bring in no additional TV revenue for them and increase their expenses…plus, UH would be another mouth to feed from their big NCAA basketball revenue.

  160. Darren August 20, 2010 9:47 am

Don Beebe, Craig Thompson…very good, proactive, quick-thinking commissioners that will do whatever it takes to save their conference.

  161. madeinhawaii August 20, 2010 9:49 am

UH needs to own the WAC.. not just win the WAC but own it. As a senior member, it has to take ownership and steer it in the direction it needs to find success in their chosen sports. It has no other options. UH needs to bring commission Benson to Hawaii along with Utah State’s AD and Pres and have a long discussion on what can be done and how to go about doing it. It’s time to get serious with the WAC and not repeat the mistakes of the past. Hawaii has no where else to go except independence and currently that’s not a viable option. Until UH starts back on the road of winning consistently and winning big in all of it’s revenue sports, independence is a pipe dream. So, let’s face it.. the WAC is home.. as such, let’s forget the cheap furniture and really spruce up the place and make it livable and enjoyable. Make it a place that you’re not ashamed to call home.

  162. Darren August 20, 2010 9:51 am

We say we’re go indy in 2012, get down on our knees and pray for that MWC invite within the 2 years (of course our football team gotta be a top 40 or so program). Anything else will absolutely kill our recruiting (Utah’s being in the PAC 10 will make it that much harder).

  163. Garret August 20, 2010 9:51 am

Apparently Karl Benson is going to be taking questions from Texas State fans at this online forum. Karl Benson e-mailing a Texas State fan site sure seems to indicate the WAC’s decision to go after the 2 Texas D-IAA schools.

I like San Marcos (where Texas State is) and I have a good friend from there that I will be staying with when I am in the Bay Area. But there isn’t much in that city and most of the people I know from there at Texas fans, not Texas State fans. However, they do have the best outlet mall in the area so ST will like that.

San Antonio is a great market, but it is 99% pro teams and Texas Longhorns. I think they haven’t even started playing football yet at the D-IAA level and they may be invited to the WAC.

  164. Garret August 20, 2010 9:53 am

    madeinhawaii,

As the WAC goes further and further east, UH’s hold on the WAC will continually be reduced. We may get to the point that eventually La Tech will seem not too bad geographically and the Texas and Louisiana schools will complain about having to travel all the way to Hawaii.

  165. Garret August 20, 2010 9:54 am

Note that the Texas State forum leader that is in contact with Benson posted this comment:

Apparently the MWC and BYU kissed and made up this afternoon. Does this change any of your plans?

  166. Pomai August 20, 2010 9:57 am

#157 al – I say make the start times 1 or 2 in the afternoon, more exsposure on the mainland, can’t hurt. Heck we can tailgate from the am go to the game an have time to tailgate some more after an still be home before 10 pm.

  167. madeinhawaii August 20, 2010 9:59 am

Maybe the WAC can use some of that penalty money to help finance a couple of the smaller schools into the WAC for the first couple of years. Maybe a Texas school and a Cali school?

  168. Garret August 20, 2010 9:59 am

We should keep in mind that when the MWC put on their website that they met with C-USA, that probably means that they came to some agreement with C-USA. Otherwise, they wouldn’t say anything.

Every conference tries to ignore the rumors…but when they start to officially confirm things you know the deal is done. For example, how long after the MWC mentioned their official invitation to Fresno and Nevada did they get the official acceptance? Notice that they never put Utah State on their website…but they did put this C-USA meeting. Interesting news will probably be out very soon.

  169. LizKauai m/ August 20, 2010 10:01 am

‎”The more difficulties one sees in the world the more perfect one becomes. The more you plough and dig the ground the more fertile it becomes.. The more you put the gold in the fire the purer it becomes..Therefore, the more sorrows one sees the more perfect one becomes.. The more often the captain of a ship is in the tempest and difficult sailing the greater his knowledge becomes.”

  170. madeinhawaii August 20, 2010 10:01 am

    Garret..

You’re right.. make that — use the penalties from Fresno and Nevada to subsidize.. TWO Cali schools and 1 Montana school…

  171. Garret August 20, 2010 10:04 am

I don’t understand why everyone is saying $10 million when apparently the contract said that the *first* school that broke the agreement owed $5 million and after that nobody would be bound by the contract. Doesn’t that mean that $5 million is owed, not $10 million? And if there was a clause that the money owed would be less if BYU didn’t join, then that number goes down more.

  172. Garret August 20, 2010 10:05 am

    madeinhawaii,

But the California schools doing have the money to get their Athletic Departments up to the D-IAA level. They also have had their budget cut due to California’s financial problems, so how can they afford the extra money?

  173. Garret August 20, 2010 10:08 am

Adding Fresno State and Nevada (killing the WAC’s appeal) appears to have helped the MWC try to keep BYU.

With BYU considering leaving the MWC, Thompson said he has had “very good dialogue” with BYU president Cecil O. Samuelson since Fresno State and Nevada announced they would join the conference.

Thompson said the MWC has “shown a willingness to work through some TV issues” in an effort to prevent BYU from declaring its independence.

  174. Kazz August 20, 2010 10:09 am

I remember a time when the word “interesting” was a good thing with regards to sports.

I think I can even remember a time when college sports was kind of “black and white” or there was this “just win” attitude and it was fine because you had a conference to call home and games to play.

No conference doesn’t mean no games, but ultimately, no willing opponents + no games = … well, you all get the picture.

  175. Garret August 20, 2010 10:10 am

It appears that the MWC is going to give BYU the concessions it wants for TV to keep BYU. So, BYU gets to use its TV network and stay in the MWC. Wow.

Thompson said the MWC has “shown a willingness to work through some TV issues” w BYU

Craig Thompson on play-in concept: “They (BCS people) might listen to it.”

Craig Thompson of MWC tells me he does not envision full-blown merger w C-USA

The MWC-CUSA meetings were wide ranging and prescheduled

The MWC is feeling better today about possibility BYU stays after very good recent dialogue w BYU

MWC and C-USA did discuss possible “BCS title game” play-in concept

  176. Garret August 20, 2010 10:13 am

This is probably why Craig Thompson went to Comcast before anything else. They need to adjust their mtn deal and enable all of their schools to made side TV deals (like how UH has K5/Oceanic/PPV). The big money from VS/CBSCS will let those networks pick games (like ESPN’s deal with the WAC) and they will get to show the games not picked.

  177. Robbie August 20, 2010 10:15 am

If the WAC disbanded and Hawaii became an independent, its likely they (and others would still have to schedule each other out of necessity, when others are in conference play- except maybe LA Tech). Also given that Hawaii nowadays always schedules one FCS team, and in emergency situations two. Hawaii should advocate the 5 West teams (HI, SJS, Utah St, NMS, and Idaho) remain and 1) expect LA Tech to bolt 2) invite 3 of 5 FCS: Cal Poly, UC Davis, Sac St, Montana, Eastern Washington.

This is the novel part: Hawaii (and the WAC) just exist for football.

    For other sports:

Utah St, NMS, and Idaho either go back to the Sun Belt or “further back” to the Big West.

Hawaii and San Jose St. “move back” to Big West (in HI of course this “back” would refer to the Wahine in the Big West prior).

Hawaii should push hard (travel deals/arrangements) to get into the Big West for all sports (except MPSF). Conference travel for UH would be limited to LAX and SFO and bus rides. No connecting flights needed for ANYONE in the conference.

    BIG WEST (10 teams):

    North Division:

    Hawaii

    San Jose St

    Pacific

    UC Davis

    Cal Poly

    South Division:

    Cal St Northridge

    Cal St Long Beach

    Cat St Fullerton

    UC Santa Barbara

    UC Irvine

Depressing is the thought of UH remaining in the WAC for Wahine volleyball, baseball, and softball.

These 3 UH sports would benefit greatly in better competition, travel, and recruiting in CA in a move to the Big West.

  178. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 10:18 am

Since BYU started this all… how about they tell the WCC they’ll join with all sports, minus football, if Hawaii comes along? Then all we gotta worry about is football in the short term.

  179. bb August 20, 2010 10:23 am

    Stick a fork in it.

    WAC is done.

  181. RedZone August 20, 2010 10:24 am

Interesting how BYU used the WAC to leverage its own position.

  182. Garret August 20, 2010 10:24 am

    Michigan Warrior,

It looks like BYU will stay in the MWC so it doesn’t matter now. I wonder how Utah State feels now, knowing they could have been the MWC’s 12th school and been in a conference with BYU.

  183. madeinhawaii August 20, 2010 10:25 am

    Garret,

Which is why the WAC would use the Exit money from Fresno and Nevada to help subsidize the Cali schools and Montana into D1. It would be in the form of a low-interest loan/no repayment grant … Loan if the school exits the WAC within a certain time frame… no repayment grant if the school remains in the WAC for say… a minimum of 10 years?

  184. Kazz August 20, 2010 10:25 am

Reviewing late stuff on yesterday’s blog:

-I know UH would have done what FSU and UNR did, but that’s a hypothetical thing. I am living in this reality and it doesn’t change my feelings about where WE stand.

-Yes. A student athlete’s FB comments should NOT be posted or linked to from a public forum.

    good morning “sunshine”.

  186. al August 20, 2010 10:27 am

pomai…1 or 2 pm start would have us competing with midwest and eastern tv markets with the night games in that area. ideally if we are the only game on the tube we would have a better chance at being aired often.

of course we got to win.

  187. al August 20, 2010 10:28 am

…and did you guys hear about what the ncaa has said about all this?

    ” “

  188. Garret August 20, 2010 10:28 am

    RedZone,

BYU needed a credible threat to get the TV rights it has been asking for since *before* they formed the MWC. They wanted the same TV arrangement that the WAC had (allowing individual school deals after the top games are picked), but the MWC always said no before now.

So, BYU may get what they have always wanted. They even got 3 more games against Texas to help beef up their nonconference schedule.

Fresno, Nevada, and BSU get to join the MWC like they have wanted.

Comcast gets more TV markets for the conference TV deal.

  189. al August 20, 2010 10:30 am

    irony of it all.

today is admission’s day in hawaii.

too bad it is not a realistic one for the football program.

  190. Garret August 20, 2010 10:30 am

    madeinhawaii,

$5 million wouldn’t be enough for any California school to upgrade its facilities to get to D-IA requirements. They also cannot afford to pay the annual scholarship costs that are higher for D-IA (since they give more scholarships). Plus, they have to start new women’s teams for Title IX.

$10 million wouldn’t support more than 1 school…and it wouldn’t enable them to afford to stay in the WAC after the built the facilities. How is the WAC going to use the $5 million for 3 schools?

  191. Garret August 20, 2010 10:34 am

    Kazz,

Should we be upset that Fresno and Nevada accepted the MWC’s offer when UH called the MWC to try to join them? UH is trying to get the 12th spot in that conference…but Houston has the TV market and wins to get it.

However, if the MWC forms a partnership with the C-USA, would that mean that they would not take Houston from C-USA? If that is the case, the MWC would look at the WAC. I know that Utah State wants to go now, but I agree with ST’s suggestion that UH could try to cut in line there.

It is too bad that the final spot couldn’t be decided after the football season. That would lead to a LOT of interest in the games!

  192. bb August 20, 2010 10:34 am

Looks like that new imposed student fee is going to give their kids their money’s worth. Thankfully they passed the resolution prior to the mess.

Pay per view will be a tough sell.

People always say, “i stuck through it during the VonAppen years.” Now it will be interesting to see how many stick through it when we have a mediocre team and have directional no name schools on the schedule on a regular basis.

And what happens to the Hawaii Bowl?

  193. Garret August 20, 2010 10:35 am

I just checked and Utah State was picked to finish ahead of UH this season by both the media and the coaches.

  195. Garret August 20, 2010 10:36 am

    Al,

I leave for the Bay Area on Monday morning. I’ll be offline pretty much all next week. I surprisingly finished a lot of work today–it was a nice break from reading up on the conference stuff.

  196. d1島 August 20, 2010 10:37 am

    from Houston Chronicle blog

(sorry Garret, if you already posted this…hard to keep up 😉 )

BYU games added: The Longhorns, already scheduled to play BYU in 2011, announced Friday the addition of a separate home-and-home series with the Cougars. UT will play at Provo, Utah, in 2013 and host the Cougars in 2014. The newest series is part of BYU’s efforts to add high-profile national opponents as it moves into conference independence.

The Longhorns have been trying to beef their schedules, especially since a pared-down Big 12 means they won’t have the possibility of a league title game beyond 2010. UT will play BYU and UCLA in 2011, Mississippi in 2012, Mississippi and BYU in 2013, BYU in 2014, and Notre Dame and California in both 2015 and 2016.

  197. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 10:37 am

Lol, Garret… I post something, and it’s already late! I kinda like Robbie’s thoughts too. Keep the WAC afloat for just football, and merge all other sports into either the Big West or West Coast, while leaving the MPSF alone. Or… can the MPSF grow to handle more sports? Is that feasible, or just not cost effective to keep the WAC as a single sport entity?

And, since BYU used us to get what it wants, I wouldn’t be surprised that they do bolt to join Texas and Oklahoma in a couple of years anyway.

No matter what, we have to solidify the ground that our football team is standing on. Losing funds generated by this sport alone will lead to huge cuts in scholarships, and a nasty chain reaction down the line. And, I’m pretty confident and excited about our basketball team. This will kill recruiting if it’s not solved in the immediate future. We dont’ need this stuff lingering and getting bigger and bigger as the football season goes on. That will only scare prospective recruits away.

  198. al August 20, 2010 10:38 am

that is amazing that you could have gotten anything done over the past two days. perhaps you write a book on “multi-tasking for dummies”. i would buy the first copy.

  199. Kazz August 20, 2010 10:39 am

    Garret,

Again if you are asking me to appreciate FSU and UNR’s stance on joining the MWC, I do, but that is different from me supposedly being “wrong” about being upset about how that effected our current situation as UH supporters.

I stand by my personal feelings.

  200. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 10:42 am

Our games aren’t even being picked up this season, with the exception of the first one against USC. If our games are on earlier, at least we’ll get some highlight/Sportscenter coverage throughout the WHOLE day. That’s more media than a quick mention once at 8am on Sunday over here covering scores from the previous day’s college ball.

  201. papajoe2 August 20, 2010 10:43 am

Garret or anyone else. Major league baseball has some kind of luxury tax. I think the NFL has something similar. Since parity makes every sport more competitive, thus even more interesting to the fan, I was just wondering if the NCAA could, should, or have to, possibly do something similar? I don’t know exactly what the pro leagues have or even know how to look it up, but don’t they have something where the rich would have to give a portion to the league which then gives it to the have nots? This is just a thought that crossed my mind. I’m not sure where I’m going with this, but if the NCAA has something similar, then, hopefully, could also supplement some of the have nots’ travel expenses.

  202. Pomai August 20, 2010 10:43 am

  204. madeinhawaii August 20, 2010 10:43 am

    Garret….

I suppose it has to be in the form of matching funds.. from boosters and/or the State? At least it would get those schools active in getting their booster clubs involved… Who knows? Maybe some $$$ benefactor might step in for one or more of those campuses. Stranger things have happened and there are a lot of moneyed people in Cali.

  205. Pomai August 20, 2010 10:50 am

al my question from the other day still stands – where is the ncaa in all of this? Is it not their responsibility to be looking out for all of the student athlete’s, because their are five school involved with this not just UH, and the student athlete’s are getting screwed.

  206. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 10:51 am

And, if we can manage to do amazing things during our earlier-starting game, we can almost count on the repetitive reports throughout the whole day, and be picked up by every network for more added replay time. Better that, than no coverage at all.

Do you guys know… when we start late, our football scores aren’t even posted on Sunday morning papers with the rest of college football? Most times, you won’t see our score until Monday’s paper here, if at all. Sometimes, they don’t even print it.

  207. Garret August 20, 2010 10:51 am

    madeinhawaii,

To match the type of budget that schools like UH, Fresno, Nevada, and BSU have been having, each California D-IAA school would need something like $10 million to $15 million more *each year*. They would also need new football stadiums…going rate is $100 million or so for a TCU-like 40,000 seat stadium. They also would need to increase attendance somehow–that would be hard for schools like Cal Poly.

Maybe the schools could get donors or miracles to happen. But they need a lot. Montana is closer, but if Montana State is required also that would be undesirable for TV and cost-prohibitive for both of them to get the money to move up.

The schools with money, who have already built their stadiums or gotten the money for them, are the 2 Texas D-IAA schools. If the WAC has to act now, they are the best choices. If the WAC had 2-3 more years and California’s budget situation improved, then the California schools could be available.

  208. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 10:52 am

    Let me hit this lottery!!!

  209. Garret August 20, 2010 10:53 am

    Michigan Warrior,

I have always hated how UH’s home scores for half of the season would be included with the *Sunday* scores since UH games would start after midnight Eastern time. Nobody would see UH’s scores since the NFL scores would be at the top.

  210. sports for fun August 20, 2010 10:54 am

  211. sports for fun August 20, 2010 10:55 am

  212. papajoe2 August 20, 2010 10:56 am

Re-post my question from last night/s blog. If Hawaii was to leave the WAC, how could we pay the $5 million buy out fee? If we only leave in football, do we still have to pay the $5 mil? We couldn’t even afford to buy out Coach Mac’s contract that a lot of people was asking to do.

  213. Garret August 20, 2010 10:56 am

    papajoe2,

That is kind of like the BCS is doing. They give millions to the non-AQ conferences whether or not any non-AQ teams make a BCS bowl. Last year the non-AQ conferences got more BCS money than the Pac-10 or Big East. MWC schools got nearly the same BCS bowl dollars as schools in several AQ conferences.

If anyone could find a way for the regular-season money to be split, that would be great. But the public watches SEC and Big 10 games far, far more than WAC games…and all TV cares about is viewers.

  214. Garret August 20, 2010 10:57 am

    papajoe2,

Once a single team left the WAC, the $5 million buyout clause was gone. So, anyone can leave the WAC and not have to pay anything now.

  218. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 11:00 am

Wondering if California schools can pay rent to use someone else’s stadiums for home games… if scheduling could be worked out to accomodate that until a more permanent solution is reached?

And as mentioned elsewhere, lobby the NCAA for a grace period in the 16-sport minimum required to be a D-1A school, so that they can at least get their foot in the door. I mean, the NCAA is sitting back watching all of this unfold anyway. They have to know we’re getting shafted, and our options are limited at best. Yeah, I know… why would they care anyway? They’ve given us the shaft themselves in the past.

  221. Michigan Warrior August 20, 2010 11:05 am

If ST is the Dean of WAC Media… why doesn’t Benson’s staff (and JD’s, for that matter)have someone here taking down all these ideas and scenarios? We could’ve averted this mess (maybe), had they the foresight to park someone here to scoop up all of these suggestions! By the time they figure out something, we’re a day late and a dollar short!

    212… I vote “yes”

  225. Garret August 20, 2010 11:07 am

    Michigan Warrior,

Cal Poly isn’t located near any big stadiums. Sac State isn’t located near any big stadiums…unless you consider the drive from Sacramento to Oakland not that far. UC-Davis has the same problem as Sac State.

It *is* a good idea to see if the D-IAA schools could get waivers so that they could ramp up their teams slowly. However, the football attendance (and stadium size) won’t be met…and if the stadiums are too small, the school cannot make enough money to pay their bills. And if the NCAA waives the number of teams, they have to waive it every time a school wants to move up to D-IA. I don’t mind that but the NCAA might.

The Cal Poly article seemed to focus just on the number of extra scholarships they would have to pay for with football and how they would have to add women’s sports for Title IX since they would be giving more football scholarships. If they cannot even afford *that*, they aren’t even close to having a waiver help them.

  239. Garret August 20, 2010 11:29 am

UH might not have wanted my help, but the Legislature showed me that they are *very* concerned and they really have been working on this. I think at one point we (not always the same group) were talking with different groups from the Legislature every week. I understand things better now after those discussions and UH really does have supporters in key positions in the Legislature.

If I lived in Hawaii I would be happy to vote for the people I talked with because they really worked to understand UH’s situation and they kept thinking about what needed to be done to help. The process to change things in Hawaii sure is a long one–I wish we could just get signatures, throw a proposition on the ballot, and get the money like they do in California.

The Legislature cannot work miracles though…what we all need is for the team to win this season. It would be nice if we could somehow change UH’s records in 2008 and 2009 too.

Texas owns the Houston market, with the Houston pro teams also head of the U of Houston. I can verify what Garret is saying about the support from both the Legislature and the downtown business community. Another Tsai-ko is spearheading the effort with the latter group, but we are all on the same team pulling the wagon in the same direction.

We did NOT expect to have everything turned upside down in less than a day, but that’s the reality of life. Having been a major car accident in 2007 and dealing with DrDoc’s heart attack in 2008, I’m used to massive shifts in Life As We Know It.

With respect to political leadership, the problem is that we are in the midst of a major transition period from the Lingle to the ??? Administration plus other major political vacancies need to be filled with Friends such as making sure that A Friend wins the nomination for Lt. Governor.

One key legislative leader who strongly supports the actions being taken is facing a major challenge within the Democratic Party during the Primary because of the incumbent’s support for civil unions. The challenger is about as interested in UH sports as my senior cat is learning to speak Cantonese.

Most popular story on SL Trib site today is “Ball Back in BYU’s Court”…beating out “Boy Scout found safe at home”; “Storm Shatters Rainfall Record”; and “USU Declined MWC Invite”

In the story, at a Q & A session today BY-Who AD Holmoe remained tight-lipped about the Cougars’ next move:

However, he never acknowledged during the 10-minute session that BYU is headed toward independence in football, and did not react to the WAC defections.

So BYU’s silence in the matter remained deafening on the day after it started a major shift of the college sports landscape in the West. Holmoe said BYU prefers not to discuss its business in the media.

Not even the Associate AD would relent.

Thursday afternoon, associate athletic director Duff Tittle said it was unlikely that the school would have an official response to Fresno State and Nevada joining the MWC.

Regarding Benson’s remarks earlier in the day that spelled out how close BYU was to pulling the trigger on the move, Tittle said, “That’s an opinion of what happened. As far as we are concerned, we are still doing the same thing we were doing three years ago when we started to look [beyond the MWC].”

Thanks, Ralph 🙂 I know he’s not with the UHAD, he’s with the BOR and serves as a liaison between the BOR and the system president and the chancellors. I was just wondering out loud, if he could possibly be doing something behind the scenes, that’s all.

At least Texas State has all the sports Na Wahine competes in, but they do not field a baseball team. The WAC needs 2 or 3 texas teams to make an eastern component or at least a hedge should La Tech abandons the WAC.

  259. d1島 August 20, 2010 12:08 pm

    From the ID Statesman

3:49 p.m. — BCS executive director Bill Hancock said no one from the Mountain West or Conference USA has contacted the BCS to ask about automatic qualification status for a potential championship game between the two leagues. Or any other scenario, for that matter.

“We haven’t received any request from them, no,” Hancock told the Statesman.

  260. d1島 August 20, 2010 12:10 pm

Hancock also said that he has spoken with BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe, but said those were private conversations that will remain that way. If BYU becomes an independent, the Cougars might want some Notre Dame-like status for qualifying for the BCS.

  261. Steve August 20, 2010 12:11 pm

Question to all of you, does Benson have the authority to change a football game sight? There is a reason for this question, which will be spelled out after the answer is given.

  262. d1島 August 20, 2010 12:15 pm

    Steve,

Having proved he has *no vision*, I would be suspect of his trying to move anything to any “sight”!

  264. A-House August 20, 2010 12:15 pm

    Ralph:

your #441 from yesterday – good idea to “subsidize” new comers, but how much of an exit fee would you recommend if such a large portion of the TV revenue goes to helping them settle in and THEY BOLT TO ANOTHER CONFERENCE after acquiring D-1A status? $10 mil or $20mil? $30 mil?

  265. Ralph August 20, 2010 12:18 pm

UT San Antonio already completed its out of conference schedule thru 2018. 2011 & 2012 is nearly complete but it takes a team a couple of years to move up a division. They field all the Na Wahine sports. And being in close proximity to San Marcos, those two can be paired to travel in other sports

  266. A-House August 20, 2010 12:19 pm

    ST:

How many players, coaches, trainers, med staff would be for the “non-revenue” sports?

Baseball, softball, V-ball combined may have the same #s as football.

To control air/hotel expenses, teams must agree to limit their numbers, including UH, to assist each other during economic down times. Also, why bring injured players along for the ride?

  267. Steve August 20, 2010 12:19 pm

I was thinking, why give both Fresno and Nevada any home WAC games, have them go to the remaining 6 WAC team sights, so those teams can incur the revenue. Why does Fresno and Nevada get to incur revenue off of the 6 WAC teams. You could even include Boise in this. Can you think the kind of revenue UH would gain playing these 3 teams in Hawaii, this year, instead of there. They did not think of the conference so why should the conference think of them.

  268. Last Call August 20, 2010 12:27 pm

I don’t want to be in the same conference as these rinky dinks Benson is talking about. It’s time for us to take on the challenge of going indy .If we stay in the WAC I’m done with financially supporting them.

  269. A-House August 20, 2010 12:27 pm

Benson mentioned in his press conference that “several schools interested in joining the WAC have made contact.

I hope his response was, “good, have your plan in my office on or before September 17, 2010 on how you expect to make the move to D-1a status.” If it was not, then we go back to the “sit and wait” mode which the WAC and UH cannot afford to do at this time.

IMHO, UH should have had written options on how to proceed if certain things happen.

But, as some one mentioned earlier, it’s time for UH to step up and be the leader to make the WAC a solid and attractive conference. First step is to fire Benson and repalce him wih a strong, proactive type who is a good leader, manager, knowledge of college sports and happenings around the nation, and excellent connections to the media and influential individuals nationwide.

By that I mean, or I pray actually, that there are some powerful behind the scenes movers – and – shakers here in Hawaii Nei lookin’ at this mess, who are poolin’ resoucres and ideas to help UH at this point. We’ll need to marshall everything we can to find a long term solution to these problems.

Great posts here gangeez! You can’t fault the bloggers here for not caring, that’s for sure!

  272. Ralph August 20, 2010 12:30 pm

A House all parties got to agree on the same buy out clause and timeline. It’s a chance that the remaining WAC teams got to take or fold, which is a no win option. The teams we are seeking are DII or 1-AA and it will take time to up grade their facilities to compete at D1. They need to up grade their stadiums to hold more fans to generate more revenue, otherwise they are in the same boat as Idaho in the Kiddie Dome, doomed for lack of a better stadium.

    Michigan Warrior,

UC Davis opened their stadium in 2007. It seats about the same as the Stanley, 10,000+. Plans include the option of building out to 30,000 seats in the future. Doubt they’d want to pay rent elsewhere when they have a new on-campus facility. Football and lacrosse both use the stadium, I’ve been there to watch lacrosse…

  276. Garret August 20, 2010 12:35 pm

It looks like Utah leaving the MWC will enable the MWC to get out of the mtn network contract…maybe this is the piece they will use to keep BYU. Comcast would probably want to get out of the network because it doesn’t make money. If the mtn went away, every MWC team would have the rights to the non-VS or CBSCS games, which is what BYU has wanted.

Thompson would not be specific on the status of The Mtn. contract with league. A source told CBSSports.com this week that the absence of Utah and/or BYU could allow conference’s network to walk away from the MWC partnership. Thompson said only that there is language in the contract regarding membership. The Mtn. is owned by Comcast and CBS College Sports.

  277. madeinhawaii August 20, 2010 12:35 pm

Do you really want to fire Benson who has built a 17-year presence or simply change some of his supporting staffers so that each school can have a representative there … reporting directly to his/her respective institution? How many staffers are there in the WAC home office?

  278. bb August 20, 2010 12:36 pm

I remember that season that the Texas Longhorns backed out of their contractually scheduled game with UH. Speculation was that they could lose the game thus wanted to avoid even taking the chance.

Now we are trying to hook up with the Texas State Bobcats. Nothing against San Marcos. They have a good outlet mall there. Hawaii shoppers will love that!

We went from getting denied filet Mignon to begging for beef jerky.

We paid to go stay at the Moana Surfrider they overbooked and now the Pagoda won’t even take us.

Ralph, re #258, I’m not sure where you got your information but Texas State does play baseball. Its team has won the Southland Conference regular season championship for the last couple of years. The baseball stadium seats 2,000 and was renovated just a year ago. UTSA also has a baseball team.

  280. coachrandy August 20, 2010 12:36 pm

    st,

how can you in the same posting say to get the remaining wac members onboard to stay together, then say uh should look at how it can get itself into the mwc? c’mon. &^%* the mountain west! you got short term memory loss. it was only 10 years ago when they formed the conference at an airport bathroom and the remaining wac members hailed benson for his fortitude in keeping them together. the wac can survive if it has no pretensions of being what it really is, a mid-conference sports affiliation. nothing wrong with that.

  281. Ralph August 20, 2010 12:37 pm

A House remember the Fumbler had a lot of teams wanting to play Hawaii in his back pocket to choose from, but he was waiting for the right one and he waited, and we waited, then we all found out to our dismay that he was waiting for Charleston Southern to commit to two games in Hawaii. Benson could be of the same cloth, lots of applicants or inquiries in his hip pocket, but he can’t decide on which one to choose at this time. Too many decisions to make, got to help the daughter unpack, buy her a microwave and refrigerator, lots to do today

  282. d1島 August 20, 2010 12:38 pm

The $5M buyout is raising more than a few eyebrows in The Valley

…esp. with the suspect history of financial dealings involving CSU-F

A quick look back: It did not spend enough for women’s athletics in the early years of Title IX. It had accounting discrepancies during the Al Bohl years. It moved corporate donations to athletics that were not supposed to go to athletics. It lost or had to settle multimillion dollar lawsuits filed by two former coaches and an administrator. It held a massive news conference to announce a $10 million pledge, and now refuses to explain why the money hasn’t been donated.

  283. d1島 August 20, 2010 12:41 pm

It seems that CSU-F is viewing things the same way that Garret sees it. Either way, it may be a while before anyone in the WAC actually smells ca$h.

Fresno State athletic director Thomas Boeh disputed the amount the university would owe, contending the maximum exit fee is $2.5 million, with Nevada and Fresno State splitting the fine.

“There’s always going to be some hard feelings,” Boeh said. “The important thing now is to let things settle down a bit so it’s a little bit more of a calmer atmosphere, and let legal counsel settle matters.

“I can tell you that the absolute maximum fee Fresno State will face is $2.5 million.”

  284. madeinhawaii August 20, 2010 12:42 pm

  286. Last Call August 20, 2010 12:44 pm

Indy + WCC works for me considering our only other option is staying in the WAC.

  287. Garret August 20, 2010 12:44 pm

I agree with Al that Texas State could grow to be a power in the WAC. UT-San Antonio also has big plans and a big market.

The one dangerous thing is that both Texas State and UT-San Antonio are open about how their goal is to get to C-USA. So, they would only be using the WAC as a stepping stone…so, they actually fit with the WAC’s profile well. If they win, they earn their right to go elsewhere.

The WAC needs teams now, so I’d invite both Texas schools since no California school seems ready. They want to be in D-IA so badly that they could agree to take less than a full membership (kind of like how Utah is only getting 50% of the rest of the Pac-10 to start). This is what I’d do:

    1. Give the D-IAA schools a full cut of TV revenue…it isn’t much, but it gives them an incentive to improve. Plus, have you seen their nonconference schedules? If they could get home games against Texas and other Big 12 teams, ESPN would love the WAC again.

    2. Give the D-IAA schools a full cut of the NCAA basketball revenue that is earned *after* they joined the WAC. So, the money for the credits earned for the 5-6 years before they joined will only go to current WAC members. Each WAC school would get more money immediately, and the new schools would gradually get their shares increased. I don’t think that it would be unfair to not share money earned before the schools joined.

    3. Make the new schools pledge to never complain about travel costs to Hawaii. Hawaii was there first and they chose to join the WAC anyway.

  288. islandgirl August 20, 2010 12:46 pm

Here is another example of how irrelevant the WAC is to the nationwide (vs regional) sports media. On the Dan Patrick Show this morning, Tenn Coach Derek Dooley, former LaTech coach, was a guest. The MWC/WAC situation was never discussed.

  289. Last Call August 20, 2010 12:47 pm

Why do you people still want to talk about staying in the WAC . Screw the WAC .

  290. Garret August 20, 2010 12:48 pm

If UH played both Texas State and UT-San Antonio every year, they could recruit in Texas strongly. The area from Austin to San Antonio is *filled* with recruits coming from excellent high schools, and their families would get to see them play every year. UH would play one Texas school at home and the other in Texas every season…so, UH would be able to recruit in Texas every year.

That alone is a strong incentive for teams in the WAC to want the 2 Texas schools. No other WAC school comes from an area with so many recruits available.

  291. Garret August 20, 2010 12:50 pm

    Last Call,

If the Big West and WCC don’t want UH, how can UH go independent? I’m curious how you answer this because yesterday I was saying that UH needed to go independent but now that it doesn’t seem feasible (with the news that the WCC and Big West don’t want UH), I don’t see UH having options.

  292. madeinhawaii August 20, 2010 12:51 pm

In any other conference.. Hawaii would have to buy even beg its way in… UH doesn’t have the money or the winning record to get in otherwise. It cannot afford to be a dime-a-dozen institution anymore.. not if it wants to continue it’s athletic department.

CSU-F AD tips his hand about what their lawyers may go after…split the fee and leave early.

Benson said the WAC might consider legal action against the departing schools and the Mountain West. With the two departures, the buyout clause has expired for the remaining six WAC members and they can switch conferences without a penalty.

When asked why Fresno State didn’t delay its announcement until after Nevada revealed it was going to the Mountain West — a move that potentially could have saved Fresno State from the $5 million penalty — Boeh said “that’s something legal counsel will discuss.”

Still, Boeh said that despite the fees, Fresno State is better off financially and athletically by switching conferences.

“We are going to a conference we’re very comfortable with and that gives us long-term stability,” Boeh said. “We wish the road was easier to get there. At the same time, we were upfront with our intentions as anybody.”

Boeh also remained hopeful Fresno State will be able to leave the WAC after this school year.

In such situations, Boeh said, “it’s generally in everyone’s best interest that that change happens as soon as possible.”

  295. Last Call August 20, 2010 12:53 pm

Who said that the WCC doesn’t want Hawaii ?

  296. al August 20, 2010 12:54 pm

last call…while it sounds easy to say, “let’s go independent”. scheduling 13 teams a year becomes a challenge. the first four weeks could be easy to schedule as conference affiliated schools (98% of the d1 teams) won’t start the conference schedules until then. the last two weeks could be a challenge to a degree since many conferences are moving towards championship playoffs during this period.

the real challenge is during the heart of the season while everyone is fully engaged in their conference schedules. not too many schools would take a bye week away just to make that difficult travel to hawaii. we could end up with many weathervane schools as a result who would come for the money only.

    but, it is do-able.

however, the real challenge is for all the other 15-17 minor sports to find schools to play or compete with. with conference games teams are responsible for their own travel costs. as an independent we would have to offer some subsidies or huge paycheck just to get teams to come here. it would cost us a pretty penny and where would the likes of amber kaufmann have competed during the season? softball? baseball? and the like let alone soccer and all those other sports’ teams.

no minor conference association has been secured and again the travel costs without the bigger revenue of football could/would/should keep the door closed on many a conference.

it is too bad the wac didn’t secure the likes of unlv and sdsu prior to the byu announcement. perhaps, they should have asked byu to hold off before announcing their intentions. (or was this by design so the byu could parlay their new found power?) then, we would have been on the other side of the fence.

we may have no choice in accepting the likes of montana/montana st(yes they lobby together), texas st/tex san antonio (their enrollment may be larger the hawaii), and whoever else wants to come aboard. i say don’t stop at 8 go for 12 or more.

some of these programs we are talking to may be the next boise state. who knows. at any rate we don’t have too many chances left.

  297. Ralph August 20, 2010 12:55 pm

Last Call have another tequila, the bar is still open, we need the WAC. Why?, no one else wants UH in its conference and we can’t go independent. If travel was the issue with FSU and Nevada, then how are we going to get teams to play us at home as an independent. We don’t win enough to draw a big following to generate the kind of income that would pay a high guarantee to a visiting team. UH would have to travel during the other conferences regular season for them to play us. Conference games matters, no team wants to lose a couple of days in travel during their season to play Hawaii.

I haven’t been keeping up with conference politics, but how vulnerable is the WCC to a raiding of their upper-end (at least in terms of basketball) schools? If combining some of those schools with the WAC+BYU would result in a conference RPI higher than WCC’s, a package deal might be attractive to them. Wouldn’t help us in football, of course, but I frankly don’t see any good options for football in the foreseeable future — the team just has to take care of business and raise its profile in the hope of opening a few doors in the years ahead.

J… thanks for the info. I only suggested it for schools that may not have a stadium for football as of this time. I don’t know if there’s a minimum seating capacity required by the NCAA for D-1A schools.

bb… don’t knock Hot Wheels. An original Beach Bomb (VW Van with rear-loaded surfboards) went for $70k at an auction several years ago when my son was collecting those little cars. There are several early models that still command prices higher than most new cars fresh on dealer’s lots.

The remaining WAC teams need to be visonary to stay intact, go for at least 4 teams, better for 6 to form two 6 team divisions. The WAC needs to hedge on their future, never know which team abandons the WAC in the future, it will be more difficult in the future to add teams to meet NCAA requirements for automatic conference qualifier status.

  311. 808ike August 20, 2010 1:09 pm

    Garret,

Hope you are able to converse with us next week even just to update us

    on some info.

  312. Garret August 20, 2010 1:10 pm

    d1shima,

I was sure that Fresno/Nevada were going to make the $5 million total (instead of $10 million) argument. After all, the WAC itself explained that the $5 million penalty only applied to the FIRST school that broke the agreement, and Karl Benson explained that any school can leave now with no penalty.

So, if the $5 million penalty only applied to 1 school, they will argue why should both of them pay $5 million. By the WAC sending bills to both schools, they can argue their point and take the WAC to court…and either win or delay their payment for years.

Fresno and Nevada are smart to offer to pay the $5 million total immediately if they can leave next year. The WAC can choose between waiting for years for their money and letting the teams go and scrambling in 2011 for scheduling.

I expect Fresno’s and Nevada’s next offer to be that they will play nonconference games against WAC schools in 2011 and beyond. After all, they have to fill their schedules also and Nevada has at least 1 MWC team scheduled (UNLV) every year that will now be an opening for them.

  313. al August 20, 2010 1:10 pm

actually it is more like keep the wac alive.

can be done, but, it needs to be done soon. very soon.

i am intrigued with the texas twins coming over, hope it happens. they both have the potential and resources to become huge conference members and could inventually influene other texas programs to join in.

then, the key would be to keep them in the conference.

it would also not only open a new tv market but recruiting in texas would increase. and if you are from texas you know there is nothing like texas football. (not to mention baseball).

  314. 808ike August 20, 2010 1:12 pm

    Ralph #311,

More teams smaller the $$$. Don’t think schools want that.

  315. Steve August 20, 2010 1:13 pm

  316. Garret August 20, 2010 1:13 pm

    Ralph,

I don’t know of any other candidates that are ready to go right away except for Southwest Texas and UT-SA. This is happening faster than anybody thought!

The WAC *should* take your suggestion and promise UC-Davis and Sacramento State an invitation once they can get the funds needed to move up to D-IA. Maybe the WAC can invite them to ramp up their number of teams and let them add their teams to the WAC once they are ready. For example, if they don’t have a softball team, they can play in the WAC once they start one.

  317. Garret August 20, 2010 1:15 pm

    Steve,

The schedules are set and the WAC cannot change that. Changing that would be a huge contract violation and the WAC would pay tens of millions in penalties.

  318. al August 20, 2010 1:15 pm

    Al,

I drove from Austin to San Antonio a dozen or so times (going through San Marcus, sometimes stopping for the outlet mall) and I know of at least 5 football stadiums in that area that would put UC-Davis, Cal Poly, and Sac State to shame…5 *high school* stadiums that are huge and always sold out.

If UT-SA and Texas State were in the WAC, the WAC would then be attractive to North Texas, opening the Dallas market for recruiting also.

  321. al August 20, 2010 1:19 pm

  325. Not an Expert August 20, 2010 1:23 pm

Thompson has out planned and out witted Benson.

Reading the unfolding dialouge every step is being taken to solidify the MWC and making sure BYU will remain. As it sounds “game over” for now. Benson leadership is sad to say non existent.

Next step is for Hawaii to go independent. Crazy but their backs are against the wall.

Hawaii should be the leader in planning a solid program for the independent schools and create some form of coalition. Convince BYU to continue on the path of being an independent in football and pave a plan to have 3 other power houses to go independent. For the other sports BYU & Hawaii is a package that comes together for now.

List of independent football schools currently:

    Army

    Navy

    Notre Dame

Need to have 5 more schools to go independent with Hawaii, but big time universities.

    Hawaii

    BYU

    ?

    ?

    ?

From what I understand the payout for a school to have television money compared to BCS playoff money is getting wider. The playoff as I stated frosting on the cake compared to televison money year around. That being the case the basis of football independence can make the schools willing to take the risk even more money. However it needs to have 3 other big name football powerhouses. These schools for their own benefit also will need to help Hawaii become one of the football powerhouses. No need to worry about losing to Hawaii in Hawaii because you lost to a consistent top 25 team.

Guarantee of 7 games scheduled. 5 more games to fill out the year. All the schools would be able to schedule the other 5 games because of pass rivalries and what they bring to the table. No need for a 13th game. If they can’t get 12 games, simple solution play some of the teams 2 times a year. Home and home series. I think even more interest due to the revenge factor.

For Army and Navy have them come to Hawaii once a year to play against each other. Just the military presence alone may fill the majority of the seats. The next week have one of them play Hawaii. The team staying over for another week can enjoy some of their time enjoying the island. The other can also remain on the island for a few days before flying to another city to play another team. This will enhance Army and Navy morale not only as schools but for the Armed Forces in Hawaii and around the Pacific.

Every year 4 of these teams to go to Asia, Japan and Austrailia to play one another and if possible play universities out there. Football may not have the competition internationally but basketball, baseball or volleyball might. Connect the schools to whatever sports that will have interest in those countries and play them.

It is now international and if planned right and interest can grow it will bring more money to all the schools. Recruiting will only be easier for these schools because you not only get to go to Hawaii but you will be traveling to the Pacific Rim.

As stated earlier if they make a bowl game frosting on the cake to be divided up by the indepent schools as they see fit. Almost a conference but not a conference. A coalition for lack of a better word.

Far fetch maybe but creating international interest will bring in more dollars. If not UH take the idea of getting Army & Navy here to play a game and one week later one of them play Hawaii. The government and the military would be crazy not to expand on this idea.

  326. Garret August 20, 2010 1:23 pm

    Steve,

I think that schools have the power to change start times. Unless the game is on ESPN, I think that UH can pick the start times. However, haven’t the tickets been printed and the PPV schedule already started selling? If the local fans don’t mind a time change, I don’t think the visitors can complain.

  327. Ralph August 20, 2010 1:24 pm

80ike smaller dollars is better than no conference and left in the “cold”. We need two teams to make the mandatory 8, La Tech wants to leave and probably will as soon as they get an invite to CUSA, so we need to hedge an recruit 3, but that is an odd number so we got to go for four.

If in the future the Texas schools abandon us like UTEP, Rice and SMU because of travel, we need 2 extra, that is why I stated 6 for a safety valve.

  328. WarriorMojo August 20, 2010 1:29 pm

Duster, I know you’re lurking. It would be difficult (and expensive!) to pursue, but what about a tortious interference claim against the mwc? It would seem like the elements are there. Am I being too much of a homer?

  329. Steve August 20, 2010 1:31 pm

    Garret:

I was thinking just for the Nevada game this year, start the game at 7:00 PM, or any time, that would cause Nevada the need to stay over. More expense for them.

  330. WarriorMojo August 20, 2010 1:31 pm

Oh, and on another subject, the Raiders have placed Frye on IR so he’s done for the year. Colt is now #4. He just needs to get into the game tomorrow. Is it being broadcast locally?

  333. Garret August 20, 2010 1:34 pm

    Steve,

UH already showed last season that they could move the kickoff time earlier shortly before the season began. So, I don’t see why they couldn’t start the Nevada game at 7pm if they wanted to.

I’m guessing Nevada would just end up chartering a flight to Hawaii so they could leave after the game. No extra hotel stay for them, but a little extra expense…though other schools (like BSU) already charter flights anyway.

  334. al August 20, 2010 1:36 pm

wm…with gradkowski still ailing. cable announced that colt will be the #3 for the bears game and should (ahem) see action tomw.

  335. Garret August 20, 2010 1:37 pm

It appears that the MWC is *not* going to invite any other schools right now…sorry, Utah State. This actually makes sense because they can see which school does well this season and invite the team with the highest computer ranking. Win and earn computer points…or else.

I shouldn’t say there are no talks, there were some talks, but again, the MWC is going to see how the season plays out before more movement

Just heard from a good source that Houston is not going to the MWC. There are no talks. Looks like the MWC is going to ride out the season.

  340. Garret August 20, 2010 1:42 pm

    Al,

Fresno may not be in the WAC in 2011. Plus, petty things like that will insure that we’d never play them again in nonconference games. I can see 7pm because that is a fairly normal kickoff time.

Plus, given the fan demographics at the game, I’m guessing that the older crowd might skip the game since they cannot stay up that late. ST and the other reporters would also have a heck of a time meeting their reporting deadline.

  341. 808ike August 20, 2010 1:44 pm

    Ralph,

It is not what you or I think but what the Pres. of Univ. are thinking. The

landscape of athletics is changing because of $$$, not common sense. The

objective is to get the first 2 into the WAC, then gradually work in others

when they are ready for transition into D-1.

  342. al August 20, 2010 1:45 pm

  343. Garret August 20, 2010 1:46 pm

Maryland and Ohio State are using the Wii Fit game to monitor concussions. That is an interesting (and cheap) way to take care of athletes.

Athletic trainers in College Park and on other campuses are using the Wii Fit video game as an objective and practical — if unproven — method of assessing athletes’ balance, an important yardstick for determining recovery from concussion.

For the past year, Maryland and Ohio State have partnered to conduct research into the reliability of Wii Fit — an exercise video game played on Nintendo’s Wii console, which allows for physical interaction between player and game — as an effective concussion management instrument

  344. Garret August 20, 2010 1:47 pm

“The athletes love it because what we’ve done is we’ve incorporated this fun game that they’re playing at home into their rehab system,” said Tamerah Hunt, director of research at the Ohio State Sports Concussion Program. “But they’re also enjoying it at a time when they’re injured or at a time when their spirits are down, and they have to come into the athletic training room every day and they have to get all this treatment . . . and it’s kind of a reaction of, ‘Oh, this is fun.’ ”

  345. bb August 20, 2010 1:47 pm

what was the start time of the games back in the 80’s and 90’s?

    wasn’t it 7:35?

  346. al August 20, 2010 1:47 pm

yes garret i understand that and it is why i said i was hoping that we get them in 2011.

in the future, i don’t see nevada and/or fresno st visiting. perhaps in 5-10 years but not in the near future.

  347. Garret August 20, 2010 1:49 pm

Force plates cost between $40,000 and $50,000, which makes them a less-affordable option for most schools, and generate in-depth data that only those very familiar with the mechanism can discern. Conway said he purchased Maryland’s first Wii Fit unit for $300. Now, all three athletic training rooms at Maryland are equipped with a Wii Fit. Goforth said the training staff at Virginia Tech has discussed trying the Wii Fit system as a balance test for its athletes, and he believes athletes would be more willing to comply with rehab if Wii Fit was an option.

  348. Garret August 20, 2010 1:51 pm

    Al,

I realized that after I posted when I went back to look at your post. My mistake for not catching that.

I actually think that if Fresno and Nevada wants to get out of the WAC early they could be forced to schedule some WAC nonconference games to help the WAC fill pukas. They will need the games so they might go along with it…and the WAC schools will need to fill the holes in the schedule.

  349. bb August 20, 2010 1:51 pm

At the very least, the WAC needs to add enough members to provide a buffer from defectors. Might take a few years, but it needs to be done. I’m sure that’s been suggested already, but that seems like an obvious long term goal.

This has also been posted I’m sure but it seems like Benson pulled the trigger on all of this when he courted BYU. The question is, can we blame him? The MWC conference has been treating the WAC like it’s developmental league since it’s inception. Shouldn’t Benson have gone for the kill on them? If Benson’s plan had worked, MWC would be where we are now.

    Stinkin’ traitors, I tell ya!

  354. SteveM August 20, 2010 2:00 pm

    Re: #341

Garret — judging from I saw and sat through last year, I do not think we have too many “older crowd” left–especially on the mauka side. They have passed on to PPV heaven, I think. I would love to see the season ticket renewal data and transfers from the mauka side. But that’s moot. The damage is done already.

I only suggest a later start time for Nevada and Fresno since JD changed the time to satisfy their whining…and now they are bagging, so we should look out for ourselves. But maybe a later time might bring some fans back on a case-by-case basis. I am guessing the most unsold seats are on the mauka side right now. We should fill the stadium and give them a grand send-off….

    Couple of good games there.

  357. Garret August 20, 2010 2:08 pm

    SteveM,

Good to know about the changing demographic of the crowd. Maybe UH could say that they want to experiment with kickoff times to gauge whether or not a later time would result in bigger crowds…and then “coincidentally” pick the Nevada and Fresno games as the once-per-year experiments.

However, if it reduces the attendance of the game then it isn’t worth it because UH gets that money.

another 20 years as sport attendees.

  362. Manoa Mist August 20, 2010 2:17 pm

I’m with Last Call. The WAC no longer benefits UH.

Rinky dink teams get added, only to later use the WAC as a stepping stone and leave us high and dry for a third time.

Staying with the WAC is small-time thinking. Read the article in Sporting News (http://tinyurl.com/24y82qr) and dream big my brothers.

UH can make it as an independent and yes, JD has said the WCC is interested in adding the non-football sports.

  363. Garret August 20, 2010 2:20 pm

Maybe this is the reason why Utah State no longer has an invitation to the MWC…there is a chance that Utah and Colorado won’t be admitted to the Pac-10!

The expansion of the Pac-10 Conference to include Colorado and Utah is not set in stone. It’s meeting some strong opposition, most notably from former UCLA chancellor Chuck Young, who is still on the Knight’s Commission for intercollegiate athletics.

Now, the Pac-10 is left with the worst of two worlds. Adding Utah and Colorado will do nothing to enhance its TV viability. Figuring added travel costs, “It may be a net loss,” Young said.

The chancellors and presidents still have to give final approval. Let’s hope they stop this freight train in its tracks.

    and compete amongst themselves?

  366. 808ike August 20, 2010 2:26 pm

    LizK,

Heard high school football games will be on Saturday.

  367. Garret August 20, 2010 2:26 pm

    Manoa Mist,

I’ve never read anything that indicated that JD said that the WCC is interested in the WAC. In fact, ST seemed to hint the exact opposite earlier.

I know the WCC very well because I worked there for 7 years and know people in the Athletic Department (and the President) at one of their schools. I even went to a 3-day Jesuit retreat at Loyola Marymount that included administrators and faculty from many WCC schools and learned a lot there about their philosophies. They are all small religious schools that are extremely budget-constrained. How does UH fit with their schools and how does the money work out?

  368. Garret August 20, 2010 2:29 pm

    Ipu Man,

The NCAA mandates a certain minimum number of sports for any team that wants to play at the D-IA level. Schools normally need more than the minimum to make the scholarships work out since football gives out so many.

UH could cut one men’s sport if needed, but the savings would be small. Title IX doesn’t let them cut a women’s sport unless they cut football.

  369. OldDiver August 20, 2010 2:35 pm

That NCAA minimum team rule is a big boys rule. With just a fraction of schools in the black conferences should decide how many sports a university should have. Kinda like home rule or states rights.

  370. Ipu Man August 20, 2010 2:45 pm

    Garret and Old Diver,

    you are both right.

    I don’t want to cut women’s sports…

just itty bitty men’s sports that no one goes to

but have to send to the mainland for competition.

Maybe cut them and add both men and women

    sports such as surfing…

  373. Garret August 20, 2010 2:48 pm

    Ipu Man,

It would be great if UH could save money. Unfortunately, the sports have to be official NCAA sanctioned sports, so surfing wouldn’t count.

In fact, men’s volleyball is close to losing its NCAA recognition because so few schools play it. A few more years of budget crisis and a few schools could be forced to drop it…and that would drop it as an NCAA sport.

  377. Garret August 20, 2010 3:03 pm

Interesting rumor on this BSU board.

    1. Utah State has accepted an invitation to join the MWC.

    2. Hawaii has accepted an invitation to join the MWC.

    3. Twelve teams will be in the conference. The MWC will have two divisions: East and West.

    4. In the West division, it’ll be Hawaii, Fresno, Nevada, SDSU, Boise State, and I’m not sure who the sixth team will be.

    5. In the East division, it’ll be TCU, USU, CSU, Wyoming, AFA, and I’m not sure who the sixth team will be. (Probably New Mexico)

    6. Idaho, NMSU, and SJSU will have to go Sunbelt.

    7. BYU will leave its 19 non-football sports in the MWC, but football will go independent.

I have a source who is close to the USU Aggie administration who told me all this.

  378. Garret August 20, 2010 3:04 pm

Oops, WenatcheeWarrior beat me to it. If that rumor is true, UH would have these teams in its MWC division:

    UH

    Fresno

    Nevada

    SDSU

    BSU

    UNLV

One claim is that the MWC wants the 2 teams partially to insure that the exit fee won’t have to be paid.

  379. WenatcheeWarrior August 20, 2010 3:06 pm

There were rumors out of North Texas today that BYU was going back to the MWC. Ended up being crap. Same story about Houston getting again. Crap. I’m not getting excited about this source either.

  380. Last Call August 20, 2010 3:07 pm

I posted this here earlier .

Hawaii considers leaving WAC for independent status

The WAC, down to six teams after the departure of Fresno State and Nevada to the Mountain West Conference this week, could lose another with Hawaii “fleshing out the possibility” of going independent in football, a source close to the situation told Sporting News.

Hawaii athletic director Jim Donovan told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that “we need to be prepared for anything.” A source told Sporting News on Friday morning that Hawaii believes it is an attractive option for ESPN—and its television dollars—now that the WAC has been mortally wounded with the losses of Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada to the MWC.

Hawaii’s non-football sports would look to play in the West Coast Conference.

While fishing off the Florida coast, a tourist capsized his boat. He could swim, but his fear of alligators kept him clinging to the overturned craft. Spotting and old beachcomber standing on the shore, the tourist shouted,”Are there any gators around here?!”

“Naw,” the man hollered back, “they ain’t been around for years!”

“Feeling safe, the tourist started swimming leisurely toward the shore.

About halfway there he asked the guy,”How’d you get rid of the gators?”

“We didn’t do nothin’,” the beachcomber said.

    “The sharks got ’em.”

I can see it now. UH gets invited to join the MWC. The Air Force, Wyoming,Colorado State, TCU,New Mexico, UNLV,Bosie State, SDSU,Fresno State,Nevada presidents meet in the airport bathroom stall and form the New WAC without Hawaii.

  406. chad August 20, 2010 4:08 pm

    Garrett,

I have a question: IF UH was to be independent as a football team, about how much money is needed annually for this? How much more money is needed to be a “big time” program? does UH have this Type of backers?…….. like Texas Longhorn oil tycoon alumnis?

  410. Ipu Man August 20, 2010 4:14 pm

This is for all the tsaikos who cruise…

An elderly man and woman on a cruise and a wave came up and washed the old woman overboard. They searched for days and couldn’t find her so the captain sent the old man back to shore with the promise that he would notify him as soon as they found something.

Three weeks went by and finally the old man got an e:mail from the boat. It read: “Sir, sorry to inform you, we found your wife dead at the bottom of the ocean. We hauled her up to the deck and attached to her was an oyster and inside it was a pearl worth $50,000…… please advise”.

So the old man e:mailed back:…

…Send me the pearl and re-bait the trap.

  411. HawaiiMongoose August 20, 2010 4:14 pm

If we can hold the WAC together now with the two Texas schools and add two more in California in the near future, then in five or six years the conference could end up looking a lot like it did a year ago.

    – Texas State and/or UTSA replaces Boise State as conference bully (with all that Texas talent)

    – Sac State replaces Fresno State as the big CSU school with a chip on its shoulder

    – UC Davis replaces Nevada as the good academic school that underachieves athletically

Doesn’t sound like the end of the world.

  413. Stephen Tsai August 20, 2010 4:17 pm

Anyway, media guy who called me said BYU would go independent in football but remain in the WAC.

He then said Hawaii would be invited as the 11th member, meaning the MWC would seek still another member.

Again, JD said he had not heard any of this.

Well, UC-Davis at least had thoughts of going to a stadium sufficient for FBS

Aggie football and women’s lacrosse began plan in Aggie Stadium (below) in 2007, located adjacent to the Schaal Aquatics Center. The initial stadium seats approximately 10,000 spectators, with plans for an eventual build-out to as many as 30,000.

  418. chad August 20, 2010 4:20 pm

    Stephan,

Is it realistic to think that UH might be a “big time” School without deep pockets? Or is our fate sealed forever in mid major conferences without money? It seems that way to me. Its not like Schools build programs, they “buy” them.

  419. d1島 August 20, 2010 4:22 pm

Does the perception that BY-Who is “arrogant” bother the Cougars?

    from the same blog:

As mentioned before, disgust with BYU from other members of the MWC is trickling in from Fort Worth, Albuquerque and beyond. The latest is this column in the San Diego Union-Tribune, which states: “BYU will be missed, but arrogance won’t.”

The columnist states his opinion, which isn’t necessarily newsworthy. But the piece does have an interesting snippet from SDSU coach Brady Hoke.

“Who’s going to play BYU now?” Hoke said. “I don’t know if we’ll play ’em. They’re not Notre Dame. I don’t think they gain a thing [by going independent]. I think they’re making a mistake.”

Well, coach, there is one team that just agreed to play them a couple of times: little outfit down in the southwest, known as Texas.

  427. cocobean August 20, 2010 4:34 pm

    RE: Travel subsidy

UH should find out how much it costs WAC members to send all their teams to play in Hawaii. Come out with a ball park figure. They should have a fairly concrete number when discussing paying travel subsidies. UH should also research the ecomonic benefits visiting teams bring with them. Get a rough number of fans, family and friends they bring. Find the total number of room nights, car rental days and meals that are purchased. Then add in the same numbers for the teams themselves.

With these numbers UH can lobby the governor, legislature or the Hawaii Tourism board for moneys to pay visiting teams travel subsidies. Look at he Pro Bowl. It’s estimated tourist who come specificly for the Pro Bowl are between 20,000-25,000 and spend between 25-30 million with tax revenues between 1.5-2 million. The Hawaii Tourist Board pays the NFL 3-4 million a year for the game because of it’s economic benefits to the State.

If UH can show how much economic benefits visiting teams bring in they can argue that the State should fund part of the travel subsidies UH will incur.

If UH can have the State commit to a dollar amount, it’ll be a bargaining chip for UH. They can use it when applying to another conference or trying to attract a big name opponent or trying to attract schools to join the WAC.

I bet if John Burns or Stan Sheriff were alive this would happen.

Three of his recent tweets over the last 25 min.

“A source close to the USU administration tells the Deseret News Utah State is actively negotiating a berth in MWC with WAC falling apart”

“Any conference move for USU depends on BYU’s decision on FB indy status. Nothing will happen before Monday at earliest”

They would be stiffled from further funding for any conodation of a hawaii trip.

  448. Darren August 20, 2010 5:07 pm

Didn’t we have some friends with the original MWC 8? I recall JD’s interview where the following went down right after Hugh found out about the defection. Hugh called his counterparts and they told him that once Mortimer took away the travel subsidies…Hawaii became a non-starter. Hugh said right then and there that travel subsidies are back on the table. His pals say ok, since they like Hawaii, they’ll vote on expansion…and it sounds like he got positive feedback from more than 4 institutions. The vote ended up being 4 – 4…no expansion. But we did have 4 friends there. Always wondered who the 4 were. I only know that Utah was probably not one of them.

Do we have more “friends” there now??

We too better be “actively negotiating”.

Cocobean – I’d bet a plate lunch that JD already has it logged in his pocket about all the travel subsidy issues you noted.

  449. papajoe2 August 20, 2010 5:08 pm

I could be wrong but I don’t think the WAC football schedule is made up after the previous season. The dates are blocked off for the season games but not made. If the 2 traders are still in the WAC, lets stick it to them and make the schedule at the last minute with them playing all road games and in Hawaii at 7:30.

I also like Ralph’s idea of making the WAC into 2 divisions. Add the 2 Texas teams now and the Cali. or Montana or even San Diego and Vegas or whoever else that Benson has in his pocket, when they are ready. That way the WAC can save in travel with west and east divisions. Cross over 2 games a year with one at home and one away. If somebody jumps, then we still have the WAC. Some kind of concessions may still have to be made by Hawaii though, but not huge kind. Like maybe flight from LA or Cali. only. The visitors must find their own way to a particular site to take advantage of said concession.

  450. papajoe2 August 20, 2010 5:13 pm

#451 should be: until after the previous season.

  451. CoolEthan August 20, 2010 5:21 pm

  452. Darren August 20, 2010 5:22 pm

**That source at USU says the MWC will expand, again, to 12 teams if BYU can be persuaded to stay in MWC for non-football sports**

  458. Darren August 20, 2010 5:36 pm

Last Call – Yeah, I picked up on your reference of the tweets but wanted to add the all-important one noting the 12 team issue.

Trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together…MWC and CUSA talk about a matchup of champions. Both have to have equally qualified champions…thus 12 team conferences, each with a crowned conference champion. Makes no sense for Houston to come over to MWC…they’re already in CUSA and part of the puzzle (probably easier for them to be top dog on that side too). BYU’s decision will make it a one or two team addition for MWC to get to 12.

Gonna stop already before I pop a vessel…

  459. RainbowCliff August 20, 2010 5:41 pm

I’m with last call and manoa mist !

let the wac go as in reality they serve no purpose as

they show no stability and the reality of uc davis, sac state

cal poly san luis obispo is really a slap in the face as those

teams are so weak I wouldn’t go see them for FREE !

Go Independent for football as you can schedule some

GREAT games home and away with MONEY being made

as back in my year of 76 both football and basketball

    were independent !

All other sports wcc as the west coast conference is

TOUGH with Gonzaga, Santa Clara, University of San

Francisco Dons, Loyola Marymount, Saint Marys, Pepperdine

University, Portland University and San Diego University are

known athletic schools and fine academic institutions.

Basketball and baseball will strive but softball, track and water polo

have no teams in the conference as I know that is not a good thing.

I, Garret and local Tsaikos get to see you play at San Diego with

LMU and Pepperdine in Westchester and beautiful beach

Malibu just waiting for some good “huki lau” !

Traveling will be an issue BUT it is better then Bosie Idaho,

La Tech, Fresno and San Jose with La Cruces New Mexico

not having many to visit or re-locate.

WAC shows no RESPECT and staying there only shows we have

no other place to go as playing Montana State or Sacramento State

does that really excite you with the HISTORY of Hawaii football

and the premiere teams we have played over the years !

Why take scraps, when you can offer so much more as being

Hawaii with an excellent athletic facility and teams can make

any conference proud and envy of having them in the alignment !

  466. Garret August 20, 2010 6:21 pm

Texas is *not* scared of playing UH and anyone who thinks that is delusional or just trying to make themselves feel better. Texas talked about the travel was hard on their team and how they wouldn’t be able to take advantage of the Hawaii exception because they needed the extra bye week for their team to be able to compete for a national title. Wasn’t the score 38-3 at Aloha Stadium before Mack Brown put in the 3rd string?

Texas makes $7 million per home game. $7 million. That is just in ticket sales and doesn’t count the parking (stadium is on campus and they control all parking spaces), pre- and post-game activities (major fundraising opportunities), concessions (they keep all of that money), and merchandising sales (they own the stores on campus selling the merchandise). UH paid part of the travel costs for Texas, they made no profit from the trip and they do not recruit in Hawaii so they gained no competitive benefit from the trip. Think about it. Texas is a public University with a responsibility to its students and University. Its Athletic Department is providing millions each year to its University to cover budget cuts from the state. Its Athletic Department funds entire buildings used for classrooms and labs for its Academic programs.

Who has Texas been scheduling lately? Mississippi. Notre Dame. BYU. UCLA. Minnesota. Cal. They will play games on the road at all of those team’s stadiums in addition to playing them at home. You really think that they are scared of UH?

It all comes down to travel time and money. Texas played at UH (at beat UH badly). Did UH travel to Texas? UH wants 2 home games against Texas and doesn’t want to go to Austin? UH could pick up $1 million if they wanted to play in Austin, but UH doesn’t take body bag games. UH turns down $1 million road games because they want home-and-home deals, but with Texas UH wanted a 2 homes for 0 home deal.

Expecting Texas to give up a home game (and the $7+ million) to go to Hawaii twice while refusing to even discuss traveling to Austin simply benefits just 1 side. You cannot expect a deal to be done when one side gets everything they want and the other side gets nothing.

Texas lost out on a shot at a national championship game because Oklahoma passed it in the computers even though Texas beat Oklahoma because Oklahoma played a stronger nonconference schedule. After that Texas added UCLA, Cal, Minnesota, Mississippi, Notre Dame, and BYU. Would UH help that strength of schedule?

Try to explain to me why Texas would travel to play at UH and give up the $7+ million. Try to explain why UH would make that decision if the tables were turned. Would UH play 2 road games at a team’s stadium for no profit without having them go to Aloha Stadium.

Or you can just keep thinking that Texas is too scared to play at Hawaii when not questioning why UH won’t play in Austin and why UH expected 2 home games without going on the road. And why Texas would be scared of UH and not be scared of BYU, UCLA, Cal, Mississippi, Notre Dame, and Minnesota.

I’ll go off the blog for a long time now because I know this is an unpopular thing to write on a UH blog. But this delusional thinking really doesn’t help UH. Thinking that teams should give up home games to travel to UH and UH won’t need to travel to them is living in the past when home games didn’t make much money and Title IX and budget cuts weren’t a concern. Thinking like that will just lead to ruin for UH because we *cannot* afford to stick our heads in the sand anymore!

  467. A-House August 20, 2010 6:28 pm

    Garret:

your #467 – if Texas makes $7,000,000 per game why are they concerned about additional “fuel costs” to fly to Hawaii? To me, that figure, whatever it is is miniscule.

Or, are they chartering a 747 to bring every body?

  468. OldDiver August 20, 2010 6:28 pm

    Garret,

This is a express your opinion free blog, and yours are normally this most interesting ones. Would hate to see you not be here for a long time, unless you are going to the bay area. Eat up when you get there, love that place.

  469. A-House August 20, 2010 6:32 pm

With the ever changing landscape of college football, maybe JD needs to rethink his position of playing a “body bag” game for $1 or $2,000,000.

Hopefully, in 4-5 years, UH will have a superior team that can be competitive with any team any where.

I just have this feeling that UH major sports will do very well this year – just an inner peace – baseball is going to be tough as Trap lost 10 players of which 5 were incoming freshman who could have made a huge difference in a year or two.

  470. Ipu Man August 20, 2010 6:35 pm

Sorry Garret, I was just repeating what I heard the sports

animals say today about Hugh Yoshida said about Texas…

I guess you can’t believe everything you hear…

  471. SteveM August 20, 2010 6:42 pm

chopsueyboy — Yes on the later start time for many reasons. I have a little sympathy and kokua for the surviving WAC teams who want to get home ASAP after a game. But the good will “team player” gesture of JD to start earlier…in my opinion, had unintended consequences for the loyal UH fans of many years…like 25 years+ who worked their way into good sideline (mauka) seats over the years.

OK, cannot help and he tried to adjust my moving from 5:00 to 5:30 pm this year. Who I do not have sympathy for now is FRESNO and NEVADA…especially Pat Hill who was most vocal in the complaint that JD responded too. So I advocate a later game in their cases and hope we can fill the stadium since the mauka seats won’t be sun-devalued at night, make up lost ticket sales, and rock the place to show Nevada (and hopefully Fresno) a good farewell…and football drubbing.

  472. Ipu Man August 20, 2010 6:45 pm

Garret, if you are going to the Bay area, I hope this cheers you up:

    (also you Colt fans…)

Al Davis has hopes for the perfect Raiders team but the only thing he is missing is a good quarterback. So he scouted all the colleges, and even the high schools, and he couldn’t find a ringer quarterback that would ensure a SuperBowl win.

One night, watching CNN, he saw a war zone in Bosnia. In the background, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a young Bosnian soldier with a truly incredible arm. He threw a hand grenade straight into a 15th story window 200 yards away, ka-boom! He threw another hand grenade into a group of about 10 soldiers a good 110 yards away-ka-blooey! A car passes going 90 miles an hour-bulls-eye! Right into the barely open window. “I’ve got to get this guy,” Al says to himself. “He has the perfect arm!” So he brings him to the states and teaches him the great game of football.

Predictably, the young man breaks all the NFL records for completed passes, and the Raiders go on to win the SuperBowl. The young Bosnian is lionized as the Great Hero of SuperBowl XXXI, and when Al asks him what he wants, all the young man wants to do is to call his mother.

“Mom,” the young man says into the receiver, “I just won the SuperBowl.” “I don’t want to talk to you,” the old woman says. “You deserted us. You’re not my son.” “I don’t think you understand, mother” the young man pleads. “I just won the greatest sporting event in the world. I’m in the middle of thousands of adoring fans.” “No, let me tell you,” the mother implores. “At this very moment, there are gun shots all around us. The neighborhood is a pile of rubble. Your two brothers were beaten within an inch of their lifes last week, and this week your sister was raped in broad daylight….” I’ll never forgive you for making us move to Oakland”.

Maybe UH should ask Keith Amemiya for asistance with our current situation…. He might have some ideas outside the box….. Just a thought

  474. Derek August 20, 2010 6:51 pm

Teams go in cycle. When Colt Brennan was here, UH started to flourish. When Colin Kaepernick leaves Nevada after this season, Nevada will be just an average team at best. Their ranking will fall quite a bit. After Ryan Matthews left at Fresno State last year, I expect Fresno State to be worse than last year. After Kellen Moore leaves Boise St. after 2 more years, Boise St. will drop, how much I don’t know, but you can take it to the bank that things will change quickly. If a key injury hits a team it can devastate a entire season. In football, you never know. When Andy Dalton leaves TCU after his eligibility ends, TCU will drop. Mark my words. We have already seen BYU and Utah started to lose more games than prior years because entranced QB like Max Hall and Brian Johnson leave their programs.

It is a fact of life. If you ask me, the Mountain West is not any better than Conference USA in the next 2 years. What Hawaii has to do is just win games and we will be just fine. Things will work itself out. God never gives us more than we can handle, and he is watching us constantly. We have to believe that everything will turn out alrgiht for our Warriors. When things are darkest, you can find some opportunties and good things will happen. I guarantee, beat USC, and we will feel a lot better. The good Lord works in mysterious ways. We have to be positive and have faith. That’s the only way to go.

  475. Duster August 20, 2010 6:56 pm

WarriorMojo, re. 329, I dunno about a claim for tortious interference with contractual relations against MWC. It may be difficult to prove actual damages. Benson was also undermining MWC through his contacts with BYU, so I’d expect a counterclaim. I don’t think it would be worthwhile. When all is said and done, the lawyers for both parties would have billed their respective conference clients $2 million for a settlement of $100,000. Plus, each party would owe a high powered mediator $300,000. The spin will be that each party had no choice but to fight off a multi-million dollar claim or counterclaim, and while neither party is happy with the outcome, the settlement brings closure. Too cynical?

I don’t think litigation with Fresno State and/or Nevada is the answer, although I think Benson had to threaten it. Settlement is, of course, the way to go. If there really is no choice due to defiance against paying the exit fee, I’d chase Fresno State first so they cannot combine forces, Fresno State reportedly signed the solidarity agreement and Nevada did not, and Fresno State seems to have a poor track record with suits involving its athletic department (Johnson, Lindy Vivas) so the Board of Directors may not be itching for a protracted battle. In the meantime, negotiate a settlement with Nevada since the statute of limitations would probably not serve as an obstacle to stringing it along. Maybe MWC comes to their rescue as they seem to be very proactive so one would have to plan for that.

Sorry for the late response (my daughter has a softball tournament at C.O.R.P.) and for the stream of consciousness post.

#467 Garret: no need to explain further as you have explained it ALL !

Texas Longhorns speak for themselves and for any one to say

that they fear UH is ridiculous to say the least !

BIG time University with MAJOR bucks and a GREAT athletic facility

with prime time alumnus and a whole state of Texas Long horn fans !

Tailgates are AMAZING with Texas pride gearing up for Saturday

College football as espn loves to have them for College game day

as you can see the excitement with their student body and local fans

all jeered up to fill Texas Stadium that is a massive site to see when

    filled to capacity !

You had a once in a life time experience to live and go to grad

school there as you have shared many stories to me on the sights

and sounds of Texas Long Horn football in which you are proud and

should be attending a GREAT school and athletic program !

No need to explain any further as both you and I know what

“BIG TIME COLLEGE FOOTBALL” is all about as hopefully one day

Hawaii can get there as I know your love for UH and what you

provide with your insiteful posts to help and aid Warrior Nation !

No worry kind sir I got yor back !

  478. Ipu Man August 20, 2010 7:05 pm

So Hugh Yoshida never said all of that?

I thought he was one of the “good” guys in UH sports…

  479. RedZone August 20, 2010 7:14 pm

I don’t think that Texas fears UH but i did think that Mack Brown cancelled out because he did not want to face June Jones in a year where he was rebuilding his secondary. I am still waiting for the day when SMU will play Texas. It is a game I will not want to miss. JJ has brought that program up to the point where there will eventually have to be a show down.

    Ipu Man…

Hugh Yoshida was AD in a different time.. a different era.. … it all has to be taken in context. Today where a coach’s monthly salary is greater than what Hugh’s annual salary was when he retired there is more accountability as to where the dollar stops…. Consider.. $7 million for a home game… $500,000 for an away game in Hawaii, minus expenses…. or $1-2 million just across the border- minus bus fees… hmm… hmmm…

  483. cocobean August 20, 2010 7:27 pm

Derek, I -probably do owe you a plate lunch. What I’d really like to see is JD talk up the economic benefits of UH sports. That the 5-6,000 USC fans will spend 7 mil in hotel, trans, food, entertainment etc. That even the BSU women’s soccer team brings 20-40 friends and relative who spend money here. He has to plant a seed with the public that UH sports is beneficial to the State’s economy. I haven’t seen him do that.

Surprisingly, not every HI tax payer is a die hard UH sports fan. He has to promote his program every chance he gets. He has to win over public support for some tax payer assistance in helping UH navigate through this new landscape of college athletics.

Someone mentioned Keith Amemiya. He should work the private sector and JD work the public(political) sector.

  485. Kazz August 20, 2010 7:28 pm

    kendall,

I found this as an example of sorts, not sure what it is today, but must be the same. I am using Bryant University’s situation as an example:

In October of 2007, Bryant University officially accepted an invitation to become a Division 1 competitor by joining the Northeast Conference (NEC). The NEC is an 11-member conference that sponsors championships for 22 sports for men and women.

With the invitation into the Northeast Conference, Bryant will become the fourth Division I institution in the state of Rhode Island, joining Brown University, Providence College and the University of Rhode Island.

“The Northeast Conference is a prestigious academic and athletic Division 1 Conference that Bryant University is proud to become a member of,” says Athletic Director Bill Smith.

Since Bryant is already filed with the NCAA, it is currently in its first year of a five-year transition period for full Division 1 membership. The teams started playing Division 1 schedules in the 2008-09 school year. They will be fully eligible for NCAA Division 1 Championships in September 2012.

The timeline of the transition is as follows:

    1. 2007-08 Exploratory Year – Remain Eligible for DII Championships

    2. 2008-09 First Year of Reclassification

    3. 2009-10 Second Year of Reclassification

    4. 2010-11 Third Year of Reclassification

    5. 2011-12 Fourth Year of Reclassification

    6. 2012-13 Eligible for NCAA Division I Championships

    Hi Garrett.

JD said WCC was interested. It was either on Kekaula interview or interview on the Bobby Curren show. It’s hard to keep everything straight when I’m keeping one eye on this drama and one eye where it’s supposed to be: on work!

But so many rumors hard to keep up anyways – heck, I’ve been wrong before.

Obviously, we all hope MWC rumor is true. That would be the best.

(Just want to add that Garrett is like an MVP blogger. He’s the Tiger Woods – pre 17-chick side action – of The Warrior Beat.)

Also, we may have to play rinky dinks, we may have to go DII, we may go independent or we may go MWC. We may not get respect from conferences, or from national experts.

But there’s no other folks I’d rather be fans and bloggers with than all you UH fans.

Like Coach Tomey said, Hawaii is a unique and special place. And so are its people.

“us against the world”? Seems like a program that represents an entire culture of hundreds of Warriors and Rainbow Wahine with an unclear future of conference affiliation is the one facing REAL adversity.

  496. Kazz August 20, 2010 8:01 pm

    I stand corrected.

The West Coast Conference would not be favorable to the Rainbow Wahine softball and water polo programs.

The Rainbow Wahine water polo team has been Top 5 or Top 4 for a couple of seasons now and I don’t think I need to go over what the Rainbow Wahine softball program has accomplished in the past 4 seasons…

    Just throwing that out there.

The Big West DOES have ALL of UH’s 18 other sports aside from football.

Interesting that the Big West Conference website is a dot org site.

    http://www.uhrainbowtique.com/productdetails.asp?pid=2268&pagenum=1

For $5.00 you can say it all. Especially at a time where hundreds of Warriors and Rainbow Wahine are facing an unknown future. This shirt simply says it all: “No Green, No Glory”. I say: “No Green, No ALOHA”.

I’ll pick this bad boy up and wear it proudly. This is MY school, MY sports programs, MY choice, MY pride, and MY LIFE.

The University of Hawaii’s athletic programs are facing REAL adversity. Time to feel good again about the student athletes that BRING IT to every game in defense of the 808!!!

USC: Ronald Johnson #8 wide receiver will be the go to guy when Barkley play action for crossing and deep routes. Three talented freshmen receivers will be rotating for playing time as California State player of the year Robert Woods is in the same mode as former wide out Steve Smith that has coaches drueling on his potential and talent.

Three running backs with Bradford, Gable and Baxter that can run inside or outside

of tacklers as they are strong, quick and FAST !

Secondary and O-line are young with not a lot of depth as Sherrece Wright SR. / DB is lone returner as he will take on the challenge of opposing team top receiver.

Heisman Trophy candidate quaterback Barkley is ready and able to put up big numbers as he is confident he will play at the same level of Palmer, Lineheart and Sanchez.

Announcers states that USC will win 11 games this season as they have a FINE recruiting class with some OUTSTANDING coaches that Kiffin has picked personally for his coaching debut !

Loaded with athletes as the preview is over with ALL elgible palyers fired up in the LA Coliseum ready to invade Aloha Stadium !

Good night foks and pleasant dreams !

  503. LizKauai (iPad) August 20, 2010 8:39 pm

Brennan, the former Hawaii star and Redskins backup, will see his first action after two weeks of watching plays drawn up on a board and receiving limited tosses in practice.

Raiders center Samson Satele warned not to sleep on his former Hawaii teammate.

“He’s a gunslinger,” Satele said. “He’s got to learn how to go underneath the center. He’s still learning. He’s got a long ways to go in this offseason. West Coast offense is different terminology. He’ll get there.

“We just have to put him in a game, see what he’s got. … He’s a gamer, man. He makes a lot of plays.”

If Boller and Brennan play well, it could make things uncomfortable for Gradkowski, who has no equity built up with Jackson – and a Boller-Brennan No. 2-3 combo would be $1.4 million cheaper than a Gradkowski-Boller No. 2-3 combo.

  504. RainbowCliff August 20, 2010 8:39 pm

#498 Kazz: YES their heads will be able to fit through the gates as ALL 7,500 don’t feel it will be a contest as many USC fans are looking at this game as a “warm up” with no chance of Hawaii winning or staying close !

Kiffin will have the Trojans ready to play as it is on national tv and he wants to show a world wide audience that he can do better then Pete and WIN doing it the right and legal way !

Calls the Hawaii game “just a 13th game on our schedule” as really looking forward to the home game the following week vs. Virginia !

I hope I have explained their attitude and arrogance to this September 2nd “slaughter” that they anticipate !

Good nite and “howz it hawnstln” !

  509. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 20, 2010 9:18 pm

    Cocobean & others:

The UH Sysztem President MRC Greenwood is a traditional academic overseeing a total of 10 campuses. With respect to the University of Hawai`i at Manoa’s Department of Athletics, President Greenwood has placed the decision-making from an administrative perspective in the hands of Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw. Hinshaw & Director of Athletics Jim Donovan work closely together, but the two must take all proposed agreements to the Board of Regents for its approval. Fortunately, its Executive Secretary is Keith Amemiya who understands role that athletics plays in an academic environment.

As for the Hawai`i Tourism Authority, its operational functions are fully funded through the Transient Accommodations Tax paid by all people who stay in hotels, bed & breakfasts, and vacation rentals. Approximately a third of the revenue is paid to the four county governments because many of the services the counties provide are used directly by visitors – sewers, drinking water, roadway improvements, First Responders, parks & recreations, and more. The balance of the money is used to pay for marketing a wide range of activities such as festivals, the Iron Man Triathlon, attending travel industry fairs & conventions, and, of course, media buys around the world.

As I said in #135 above, several different discussions are moving forward concerning the future of sports along with other kinds of economic development on the 130+ acre Aloha Stadium site as part of Transit-Oriented Development. There are multiple steps to take, but there is movement going ahead to look at options & alternatives to a large parking lot plus a few fast food outlets in TOD.

Unlike most of the proposed transit stops, the Aloha Stadium Station will be fully developed by the State of Hawai`i – and not the City. Of the proposed 20 transit stations, 17 will be developed by the City and three by the State.

As I said in #135 above:

Well over a year ago, the head of HTA’s Sports Tourism department, the second in command in UH Athletic Department’s Administration, and a faculty member at UH’s School of Travel Industry Management specializing in niche tourism were sent a joint e-mail requesting that the three of them work together to develop a comprehensive UH sports marketing program which included accommodations, attractions & tours, and meals for the fans & supporters of the more than 100 teams that fly Hawai`i to compete in D-1A intercollegiate athletics.

After giving it some serious thought, I think that the reason nothing has been done in this area is directly related to the economic downturn. The HTA found itself struggling to keep its staff and services going. In fact, a chunk of its revenues was going to be siphoned off into the General Fund to reduce the deficit & its impact on direct government services; however, that concept finally died in the last couple of weeks of the 2010 Session.

To sum up, policymakers and political leaders as well as community & business/corporate leaders have stepped up to take on these multiple challenges to move not just UH but also the entire state into stable economic growth.

Unfortunately, not having seven collegiate football games in Hawai`i will have a major impact on what happens with Aloha Stadium as well other components of the economy. Until the decisions are made, all folks can do is continue to move forward with planning – and carrying out – Hawai`i’s economic future on the track they got on a few months ago.

  510. roysan16 August 20, 2010 9:40 pm

Is a team like Texas scared of playing Hawaii?

I think they would be scared of the repercussions if they lost the game.

Physically they wouldn’t be scared. But mentally, which is a great part of the game, it’s possible they are scared.

I think they would face a lot of ridiculing from their fans, media and other BCS schools for losing to a non BCS school.

Losing to Hawaii I think they would be scared of their pride taking a hit. And the team’s momentum being hindered. And how future recruits would look at the loss.

For Texas they would have had a lot riding on the game with Hawaii, with everything to lose, and that prospect alone would scare them. It would scare any team.

Conversely Texas and Michigan know that Hawaii has nothing to lose. And they know Hawaii would enter the game as gamblers and gunslingers. That prospect would scare a lot of teams.

Back when both Texas and Michigan backed out of their games with Hawaii, Hawaii had a offensive scoring machine that ranked near the top. Hawaii had record breaking quarterbacks. Don’t you think any opponent would have their work cut out playing Hawaii back in those years? Do you think (what’s a word opposite of scared?) they would be relaxed? No.

Both Texas and Michigan backed out of games playing Hawaii at Aloha Stadium. Now when you factor in everything, hostile environment, an offense that was a high scoring machine, a coach (JJ) that has gone on record as to saying on any given day he felt he could beat any team in the country, do you think that this looms in the minds of the visiting teams? Of course it does. Do you think visiting teams coming into Aloha Stadium have some fear and respect for the boys? Of course they do.

Scared by definition has different meanings to different people, individuals and teams. There’s some objectivity here.

Personally when I weigh all the factors I don’t think people should be classified as being delusional (as garret has posted above) to think that a highly rated, powerful team like Texas isn’t feared (or scared) of Hawaii’s team, firepower and hostile environment..

Texas and Michigan could lose to a top twenty team and it would not have as much of an impact that’s shameful on their programs than if they lost to Hawaii. That prospect would scare any team.

This is from the LA Times:

But could both of those schools (Colorado and Utah) wake up October 22 still on the outside of the West Coast’s King Conference, left to mull over an uncertain future?

It’s certainly possible. The PAC-10 Conference presidents and chancellors will meet October 21, and on their agenda is approval of the addition of Colorado and Utah.

Until their hands go up in agreement, Colorado and Utah are orphans.

Things may not be looking too good for UH right now, but imagine on Oct 21st, what CU and Utah could look like if the PAC 10 President/Chancellors nix the merger. Oh, the possiblities of “bachis”.

  514. LizKauai (iPad) August 20, 2010 10:10 pm

“Hiram Eugene pulled down an interception on a Colt Brennan pass.

Colt Brennan had his best session of practice yet.

Brennan should get some playing time on Saturday with Frye done for season and Bruce Gradkowski still only having limited practi0es throughout the week.

At one point, Jason Campbell and Kyle Boller had consecutive long completions.

Stanford Routt hauled in an interception.

Overall, the passing offense had one of it’s better days.”

  520. Ralph August 20, 2010 10:20 pm

maybe Colorado and Utah can join the WAC and BYU play 6 WAC teams a season including Colorado and Utah.

UH may turn into Cinderalla from the proverbial step child nobody wanted before it all said and done.

UH Na Wahine loses to Pacific in soccer 1-0. Four of the starters on Pacific are Hawaii graduates, one of the reserves also hails from Hawaii- Mililani HS. All four players played for Leahi soccer club.

Correction Iolani linebacker was 5’7″ 140lbs. I don’t know why announcer said he was 5’2″ earlier. He grew 5″ at half time? Iolani changed qb in 2nd half and was finally able to move the ball and score. This kid can sling the rock and is very elusive. Final score Mililani wins 43 – 23.

  525. RedZone August 20, 2010 10:32 pm

Wahine lost their scorers from last years team. I was hoping someone would step up.

Now is the time to pray and believe.

And I agree. Hawaii has so many unique qualities that many places have lost.

This is the time to put our aloha spirit to work.

  528. whitey August 20, 2010 10:45 pm

When you think about the PAC 10 creating 2 divisions, there will be major problems with who will play who. If you were Oregon, would you want to play Wazzu and not be able to play USC or UCLA. List goes on and this is a major problem with trying to create divisions. Prime example is why Nebraska left the Big 12. The Big 8 was great because you get to play every team in the conference. The WAC will survive because every team in the conference will be able to play each other and that helps build rivalries.

  529. whitey August 20, 2010 10:52 pm

And because of the possible divisions within the PAC 10, UH may be able to schedule more teams and get longer contracts. Imagine if the 13 games schedule continues, UH would play 5 WAC games till they add more schools, but have 8 open dates. Already you have teams like Army and Navy, maybe BYU, Oregon St is a strong possibility, USC, UNLV, and a couple of other teams would make UH be in a very enviable position. Me, I like the possibility of the silver lining on the horizon.

Same for the MWC, they will have pukas to fill.

  532. whitey August 20, 2010 10:55 pm

    and with that, brake time

  533. Curt August 20, 2010 11:08 pm

Hard to believe the rumor that MWC is planning to add Hawaii…especially when JD hadn’t heard anything about it. I’ll believe it when JD confirms it.

  534. Curt August 20, 2010 11:14 pm

    LizKauai,

Good to hear Colt had his best practice yet. But, it sure seems that he’s throwing interceptions every time out. I hope he plays lots tomorrow and blows everyone away like he did in the Hall of Fame game 2 yrs ago. He completed 9 of 10 with 2 TD strikes in an impressive outing. That day, Madden’s man crush with Colt was born.

  535. LizKauai (iPad) August 20, 2010 11:23 pm

Curt- one of the weakest areas is the receiving corps. All the qb’s are experiencing the same thing.

  536. SteveM August 20, 2010 11:24 pm

Liz – what time is the game tomorrow? Will we be able to watch it?

  537. Curt August 20, 2010 11:29 pm

Lots of opinions on whether to go independent or stay with the WAC. Seems much safer to stay and build up the WAC again to me. If we go independent and it flops badly, the whole ship could sink. Though the WAC has been weakened significantly for the time being, we could still prosper without worrying about football scheduling issues from September to November. The 2 Texas schools have great potential.

  538. home tutors August 20, 2010 11:36 pm

hi i like the blog very much.

  539. Curt August 20, 2010 11:36 pm

    LizKauai,

What? Butterfingers with the Oakland Raiders? Oh no; and I was worried about the 3rd string protection for Colt. One thing for sure, I like that he’s now had more practices with the team. That’s gotta help his confidence and performance. Probably was a blessing that he didn’t play last week; I was a little concerned about that one.

  540. Curt August 20, 2010 11:39 pm

    SteveM

Haven’t heard anything about how we can catch the Raiders game.

  541. SteveM August 20, 2010 11:52 pm

OK — I see the Raiders-Bears game listed at 2:30 HST….but…where/how if possible?

Hi Curt. Yes, safer to try and salvage/reload the WAC. Al very patiently explained the major problem in post #297. The other night, Rasu Begasu and I were predicting 4 to 5 home games and the balance on the road during OCT-NOV because no D-1A would want to interrupt their own conference title/bowl game chase to take a long distracting trip to Hawaii. Yet we would need to maintain D1-A status and must play them–so we go on the road…a lot…with many body bag games to help offset the lose of TV and home game revenue.

Going independent sounds good, but finding teams to play you is another matter. Look at the problems filling the non-WAC sked over the years. Fumbler was bad, but there are challenges there.

  542. Curt August 21, 2010 12:01 am

    SteveM

Yup…too risky in my opinion. I’d hate to be the AD that sank the whole athletic ship.

  543. Curt August 21, 2010 12:03 am

Has anyone seen the movie, Inception? Is it worthwhile to check out?

  544. Curt August 21, 2010 12:05 am

Okay. It’s time to catch some Z’s. Good night all! Hasta la vista. ZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  545. SteveM August 21, 2010 12:18 am

Independence is not impossible–in fact it might be the only choice if we cannot resurrect the WAC, but let’s shoot for the WAC first…because it is the only option that we have any positive control over. We do not control the other conferences. We do not control the national TV market. We do not control the Hawaii Bowl.

I sound like a control freak, but if we don’t work what we can control, we are sitting as beggars outside someone’s door. Or we grandly announce going independent and then quietly beg teams to play us.

OK, getting off the rant box now. 🙁

  551. James August 21, 2010 12:41 am

The best option for UH now is to stay in the WAC and focus on building a strong football program in the WAC to make it competitive. Glory, prestige, and status in college sports come to conferences with strong football programs. It is a waste of time now to even think of moving to another conference when various conferences are up in the air and some of the teams planning on moving may end up without a home. Let things settle down and UH could make wiser decisions down the road on which way to go: stay in the WAC, join another conference or go independent. WAC may be weak now, but who knows five or ten years from now it could become a stronger conference. You never know. And in a weaker conference, like now, UH has a better chance of winning conference titles to the delight of our fans. Who cares whether you are playing in a strong or weak conference as long as the teams show winning records. Go Warriors!

  552. jm2375 August 21, 2010 12:50 am

Curt – yes, “Inception” was an awesome movie. I need to see it again. hmmm…

  553. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 21, 2010 1:03 am

    roysan16,

I don’t think fear is in the minds of teams like a Texas or Florida etc. Is losing to Hawaii something they consider? I am sure. But so is losing every single game they schedule.

If “blue chip” teams are afraid of losing to “lower level” teams then none of them would schedule Div 1-aa schools. Remember, if Texas or Florida lost to UCLA, Arizona, or Cal…they are pretty much out of the National Title picture…

Is losing to a Hawaii and being the butt of jokes something they consider? Sure, thats possible. But I think it comes down to what benefits them and what doesn’t. The “what doesn’t” side of things does have losing to Hawaii. But my guess (and only a guess) is that they don’t look at a school like Hawaii and go “well, if we play them we might lose, so best not to take that chance.”

We had a great QB and one of the best receiving group ever at the Sugar Bowl…Would we have done A LOT better if we played that game at home? Hostile environment?…These teams like Texas, Florida etc only play in hostile environments. If anything I think the atmosphere at Aloha would throw them off because there ISNT constant noise and screaming. I haven’t been to Big-12 games but I am pretty sure road games at OU, T-Tech or A&M are not much fun for opponents.

Like Garret says it comes down to “how will this deal help me?”

Not “Hawaii and the chances of losing is too much for us to risk”

    just my thoughts.

  554. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 21, 2010 1:04 am

Does the MWC need unanimous consent to add another team or simple majority?

Yes, congrats to Kamalu Umu for earning a scholarsip.

from ST’s article on Kamalu, in the sports section …

” … The Warriors were out of scholarships until freshman defensive end Veni Manu quit the team this week. UH head coach Greg McMackin said Umu was an easy choice. ”

    Good luck to Veni Manu.
