Independence day

Earlier this month, the presidents and athletic directors of eight Western Athletic Conference schools not named Boise State decided that unity was the best way to ensure the league’s stability. A pledge of allegiance was crafted and, for the lawyers’ sake, an exit penalty of $5 million was included. All agreed to the terms, although now, Nevada’s memory is a bit fuzzy.

The professed solidarity meant little during yesterday’s Ditch-Your-Ash Wednesday, when WAC members Fresno State and Nevada accepted invitations to join the Mountain West Conference. With Boise’s earlier announcement that it would go to the MWC, the WAC will be left with six members, including Hawaii, for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The WAC will have a news conference today, but what’s to announce? That it was fleeced by the MWC? Again. That it still remains a viable conference, even though it is running out of members to turn off the lights? Sometimes when you wait for the dust to settle, you realize you’re standing in … dust.

So let’s speed through the five stages of grief, and point out these lessons:

• Commission all of the studies necessary, but it’s obvious UH needs to compete as an independent in football. Unless there’s a shift in the continents, Hawaii’s isolation is a deal breaker. If BYU opts to remain in the MWC, and the league needs to add a 12th member, the Warriors still aren’t on the invitation list. Word on the boulevard is TCU wants to bring in Houston; New Mexico wants to invite UTEP.

• Boise State is not your friend. Not only did Boise spend the past five years plotting to leave the WAC, it surely served as a reference for Fresno State and Nevada. In the business world, such acts lead to being escorted out of the building; belongings will be FedEx’d to you later. Since we’re all adults here, the only thing to do is keep repeating the tale that birds died diving into Boise’s blue turf. No, it’s not true. But it sure irks Boise officials to keep hearing that.

• Be paranoid. In college athletics, it’s justified.

The winners:

• BCS conferences — When mid-majors have hold-me-back spats and try to weaken each other, the BCS conferences can go about their business of ignoring the outsiders.

• Fresno State, Nevada — They waited a long time for the MWC invitation; in one dizzying afternoon, their dreams came true.

• Boise State — It was looking bad when the Pac-10 plucked Utah, and BYU said it was considering becoming independent in football and joining the WAC in other sports. But with Nevada and Fresno State joining the MWC, it appears Boise State made the right decision.

Losers:

WAC — Has any NCAA conference been burglarized this many times?

Hawaii — It has to be annoying that the WAC’s senior member can’t get a sniff from the MWC. Not even travel subsidies or the Hawaii exemption are enough.

BYU — It didn’t get any love when it asked for perks from the MWC. Instead, the league showed that all teams are replaceable when it went out and, well, found replacements.

    FROM THE LAST POST

I wonder why the WAC is always the Charlie Brown in the NCAA.

No respect, always a bridesmaid, just a stepping stone for bigger and better conferances.

Every time the WAC tries to kick a football, Lucy pulls it away at the last second and we fall

flat on our back and wonder what happened.

Without a strong WAC,I see UH as a traveling team.

Maybe 4 home games and invited to 9 away games all during Home Coming week.

You know, the home teams best chance to win.

Chee, I hope the game on 9/17/11 goes on.

with the MWC expanding, will there be room for UH ?

    People/Teams I dislike in sports

1 Dallas Cowboys, I include anyone wearing cowboy boots, ten gallon hats, guys named Tex or Slim, all real and actor cowboys except for John Wayne.

2 Dan Snyder, you and your buckets of useless cash have ruined my cherished ‘Skins.

3 Norb Turmer, You were the ex Dallas OC who started the ‘Skins’ slide to mediocrity

    4 MWC, Twice now

5 Dallas Cowboys, yes, I really really dislike them

6 Desert Auto group, ok not sports related, but John Elway is a part owner and the company is full of $%#^s

    7 Karl Benson

8 BYU, still can’t get over the rivalry

9 The retarded kid in the SD Chargers jacket and adult daipers who made fun of my Redskins after we lost to them in 2001, I had to bite my tongue, what do you say to a 20 something guy who is drooling on his SD Teddy bear.

10 The Loose Caboose, a bar out here who used to be a “REDSKINS” bar, but would show NASCAR on the big screen for the inbred yokels

Still up. I’ll drag this over from the last blog entry too (in response to Rasu’s post #2 above:

Rasu Begasu — that’s the worst case scenario as an Independent. I see 5 home games (2 against D-1AA) and 8 away games….unless the NCAA will give a Hawaii exemption to start the season in mid-August and end mid-December. Then we might get 7 home games.

I hope going-Independent scenarios play out even better than this.

But a serious question: How many games does UH have to play against D-1A teams in order to have the same status/classification?

I believe this will determine who, where and when we play as an independent if we want to stay D-1A (or whatever it’s called now–BCS?). Also, no automatic Hawaii Bowl for UH if not a D-1A team?

  9. Rasu Begasu August 19, 2010 1:08 am

    SteveM,

    Good questions.

If UH cannot hold on to present classification, no Hawaii Bowl, but we should be a powerhouse in D-II

Please RSVP here if you can… or just come down if after 1000.

the wac is paying the price for not being pro-active these past years, months, days, and even hours before all this came tumbling down. sitting on their butts with their hands underneath is partly to blame.

they should have kept adding members to give itself a bufer knowing that the vulture that is the mwc would come poaching once again. they proved it once and had no love lost for destroying a conferfence.

give the mwc for taking the aggresinve role otherwise they could have easily been in the wac’s shoes.

not one to point fingers, but, this time i will. the wac leadership (benson) is also guilty for not leading. if it were up to me, i would have made a mandatory exit fee of no less than 10 million if not more. that would have been more like it, putting your money where your mouth is.

    …nuff said.

  16. al August 19, 2010 1:26 am

independence seems to be the way to go. we’ll have to roll up our sleeves and dig in.

this year’s team has a huge responsibility to win and win often. anything short of an 8-5 regular season coupled with a convincing win in the hawaii bowl must be considered a failure.

beating at least two of the three defectors is also imperative.

whether we go indendent or hope and cling on a prayer to get an invite will all be predicated by winning.

winning brings better opponents. beating them will soothe the souls, pocketbook, and the recruit process.

I hope this just fuels the fire under McMackins @$$, as well as the ENTIRE FOOTBALL TEAM!!! With all the talent & experience we have this year, there’s no reason why we should “settle” for finishing 8-5 or 9-4… The ONLY “acceptable” losses would be USC & MAYBE Boise. But like I said, FUEL & FAN that fire!!! Just like in 92′, when all the “experts” predicted UH to finish 8th… and we went on to beat Illinois in the Holiday Bowl! How the hell do we drop from finishing in the Top 25 3 years ago, overnight celebrity status to being the nerdy kid that doesn’t get invited to the party? Ridiculous… If Hawai’i had any dire need to win, it’s THIS SEASON. Make it count guys… This could be your final audition to stay a D1 program.

on a positive note, I think Hawaii got a commitment from Darielle Dixon. Best friend is Rahmel Dockery so I hope we can land both if thats the case. Dockery is explosive like Sampson. Stephen, can you confirm this? He was here with Rahmel over the weekend

  27. Garret August 19, 2010 3:10 am

One positive piece of news is that the BC Lions are interested in signing RGM.

Buono also is interested in resigning former Lions receiverreturner Ryan Grice-Mullen, who was released Wednesday by the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. Grice-Mullen, however, is a true free agent and the Lions have no claim to his CFL rights.

“He’s gotta clear waivers first,” Buono said. “We have to let the process take its course. But we’d like to have another receiverreturner like Ryan, and he departed on good terms with us. We’d be idiots not to look into the possibility. We look like idiots enough as it is.”

  28. Garret August 19, 2010 3:13 am

I would add the MWC to the list of winners yesterday. The WAC tried to take BYU’s non-football teams and get SDSU and UNLV to join the WAC as full members, with BSU looking at possibly coming back to the WAC…and a few hours later the MWC had Fresno State and Nevada, preventing SDSU/UNLV/BSU from leaving.

  29. Garret August 19, 2010 3:18 am

The big flaw with my C-USA 3-division hopeful plan from yesterday is that the Western division might have tempted the C-USA with Fresno and Nevada included…without them, the numbers probably don’t work for C-USA.

That means that UH has to find a home for their non-football teams and try the independent route. If UH could keep things afloat for their teams for a few years, a winning football team could give UH a chance in the next round of conference expansion. The Big 12 will add 2 teams and 1 could be BYU…the other team will set off a chain reaction.

But if UH cannot find a home for the non-football teams, the football team has to be eliminated due to Title IX. Any of the options for UH’s non-football teams (Big West, WCC, etc.) would be extremely expensive and those conferences don’t offer all the sports that UH has I believe. Conferences without football don’t need to offer as many nonrevenue sports due to Title IX…that means that UH has to find some (probably expensive) solution for those nonrevenue teams or Title IX will require the end of football.

  30. Michigan Warrior August 19, 2010 3:24 am

Yesterday, there was talk that BSU might end up returning to the WAC before ever leaving. If they have that clause in their contract, it would stand to reason that FSU and Nevada would have similar wording. All is not totally lost yet, if those in our ivory tower can convince FSU and Nevada to reconsider and remain with the WAC, thus allowing BYU to go through with their plan, thereby pulling BSU back, which may lead to SDSU and UNLV actually jumping ship… which may ultimately kill the MWC.

Just not sure if Benson is the right person to try to convince anyone of anything, at this juncture.

  31. Bstunna2002 August 19, 2010 4:13 am

I think now is the time to hire a sports marketing agency and show the PAC 10 what Hawaii has to offer…I’m sick of being the Good Guy waiting for the prom date then getting stood up…Really what has Karl Benson done to ensure our future and the future of the conference? Now’s the time to bid Aloha to the WAC and start thinking about Hawaii’s future but if we wait too long there may not be one for our warriors….

  32. Michigan Warrior August 19, 2010 4:21 am

Actually, if C-USA could be convinced, I’d like to see Garret’s realignment happen. Time to give up being the grandfather of the WAC and let the conference fade away. If C-USA could be recongifured to include three divisions, we may still be in a weaker subdivision, but at least we’d still be alive. We’d play everyone in our group, plus a couple of crossover games with the other two, still have the Hawaii exemption in place, plus bringing at least one more bowl to C-USA.

  33. Garret August 19, 2010 4:22 am

Interesting article that mentions how Karl Benson had breakfast with UNLV’s AD on Tuesday and they talked for an hour. Considering how the WAC was trying to get UNLV and SDSU, Benson meeting with UNLV’s AD on Tuesday helps understand the timeline of events.

  34. Garret August 19, 2010 4:26 am

    Michigan Warrior,

It wouldn’t be like UH was joining the C-USA, it would be like the WAC and C-USA merged with the WAC being the Western Division. C-USA has 3x the TV money and far more NCAA basketball money (thanks to schools like Memphis). Trouble is, the leftovers of the WAC don’t bring enough value now.

C-USA already had 3x the TV money than the WAC with BSU, Fresno, and Nevada…take BSU, Fresno, and Nevada out of the WAC and it would be like C-USA was donating millions to save WAC schools without getting any value in return.

  35. rage777 August 19, 2010 4:40 am

If we are going to go Independent in football, then we might as well kill the football team now. Unless the football team has some unbelievable seasons in the very near future, there is no way they are going to make money. If the football team isn’t making money, then UH athletics is doomed. The travel costs will be huge, the university will be in a huge deficit and the Hawaii residents who don’t care about UH athletics are going to be screaming for an end to the football team.

I’ll ask it again, why on earth did the WAC want SDSU and UNLV? I still don’t get it. The WAC members should have fired Benson after the MWC was first formed.

  36. rage777 August 19, 2010 4:47 am

Also, I am confused. In Ferd’s article it says:

two below the minimum to qualify for NCAA Division I automatic playoff berths in all sports except football

And in the ESPN article, it says:

Under NCAA rules, the WAC still maintains its men’s basketball tournament automatic bid with six schools.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=5474774

Isn’t these two contradicting each other? The ESPN article says the WAC can still qualify for men’s basketball, but Ferd says everybody but football can qualify with 6 schools. Should Ferd’s article say two below the minimum for football, but fine for the other sports?

  37. Garret August 19, 2010 5:06 am

    rage777,

La Tech is openly lobbying for the C-USA.

NMSU cut $3 million from athletics and their budget problems are putting pressure on them dropping out of D-IA…and that was before Fresno and Nevada dug out.

    UH is looking at independence.

The WAC won’t stay at 6 teams…it will jump to 8 or fold.

  38. rage777 August 19, 2010 5:09 am

Don’t we know somebody at Portland State.

  39. CoolEthan August 19, 2010 5:18 am

The old AD could still be here with a plenty – of- pukas OCC schedule for the years ahead.

JD has been doing his job.

Ding, dong the WAC is dead:http://roughingthepasser.wordpress.com/2010/08/19/ding-dong-the-wac-is-dead-nevada-and-fresno-state-join-the-mwc/

Get over the woe is me and be proactive UH. The fans are tired of being left behind. Make something happen..thats why you get the big bucks!

  41. Garret August 19, 2010 5:20 am

Glanville was fired. I think that Nevada’s former DC is the head coach there now.

It doesn’t appear that Portland State has to money to move to D-IA. UC-Davis is really low on money. Cal Poly has a small market and small school with little money. Montana seems to not have the money and they need Montana State to go with them.

The best targets for the WAC are Texas D-IAA schools…but UH would be really isolated geographically then.

  42. Michigan Warrior August 19, 2010 5:22 am

You’re right, Garret… not much to offer anymore. Sure wish we could keep FSU and Nevada from leaving, and try to make a deal with C-USA. Most scenarios I can think of involve a weakened or dissolved WAC, unless someone drops a huge one, somewhere. Just unfortunate that football and basketball had to suck at the wrong time. Hurts even more since other sports were really stepping it up too! Just makes me sick to the core.

    Garret #30,

Came up with a viable solution. In other scenarios, there are too many

“ifs” that UH has no control over. When the “ifs” comes to fruition, then

    UH can make adjustments.

  46. Hank August 19, 2010 5:52 am

…how do people feel about the WAC going after SDS and UNLV for football?…there is talk that they were interested before the s!!t hit the fan yesterday.

granted, they aren’t powerhouses, but it keeps the conference minimum for football…and it helps our other sports programs…

Long term, TCU is dying to leave the Mountain West, and BYU seems intent on going independent in football from what i’m reading (they don’t want to share tv revenues since they have their own network). Utah is leaving for the Pac 10…so the Mountain West ain’t going to be a BCS conference in the near future by a long shot.

and heck, why not let BYU join in other sports if this can happen…football’s their Bread and Butter, and won’t leave unless a BCS conference picks them up (doubtful i think).

Finally, we need to get a commissioner who can instill some confidence in its members….and produce results.

Sorry for being so longwinded…mahalo, :>

  47. RichfromOC August 19, 2010 5:56 am

UH should negotiate a deal with ESPN for the late Saturday game and go independent. But fielding a competitive team and filling the stadium is important to this equation.

  50. d1島 August 19, 2010 6:17 am

(Not so much today, but still) Great Morning All!

Need to stay strong in the face of adversity. Case in point:

In perhaps the most telling comments of the evening, Thompson said that while other conferences have made “concessions” to keep schools from bolting, “that’s not what the Mountain West Conference does.” He alluded to the way the conference said goodbye to Utah two months ago when the Utes announced they were joining the Pac-10 without pleading for the Utes to stay.

  51. tom mui August 19, 2010 6:26 am

The sun has come up on Hawaii Nei once again!

    Good morning Hawaii!

And I am still confused – nothing new but still confused.

  52. d1島 August 19, 2010 6:27 am

So the “company line” is that Benson was being proactive by approaching BY-Who, getting positive feedback from them, THEN getting the $5M solidarity assurance pledge from the existing WAC members?

And when the Pac-10 took BYU’s rival, Utah, instead of the Cougars and the Big 12 passed as well, Benson reportedly took an “action plan” to the WAC Board of Directors built around BYU and discussions with ESPN.

Utah State President Stan Albrecht is said to have been the go-between. When BYU came back to the WAC and asked for guarantees in terms of a minimum number of games for its football team and other considerations, the WAC readily agreed.

BYU is said to have sought annual games with UH and Utah State to help fill out its football schedule.

Based upon BYU’s interest, Benson went back to the WAC Board of Directors this month and sought a “solidarity pact” with members pledging to remain in the conference despite expected MWC overtures. A $5 million per school price was established as a “penalty” and at least six of the eight schools (Boise State was not included) signed on per WAC policy.

Thompson said the MWC will “support” Fresno State and Nevada’s financial situation saying, “We’re not gonna bankrupt” the incoming teams.

Looks like Craig Thompson upped the ante (possibly with an “all in” move) and Benson and the WAC are gonna have to “fold”.

  53. d1島 August 19, 2010 6:29 am

    😳

forgot to change the web reference for that last post, but that quote came from the S-A.

  54. d1島 August 19, 2010 6:32 am

Now comes the part where the money gets sliced up by the attorneys…

Nevada will have to pay an unspecified exit fee. Neither UNR president Milton Glick nor Wolf Pack athletic director Cary Groth would confirm the amount, saying that the previously reported $5 million would be the upper level of the fee. While Nevada did not sign an agreement for an exit fee, it did apparently agree to one (on the behest of BYU). The MWC will help pay that exit fee and an unspecified entrance fee into the MWC. “We’re not going to bankrupt them to come into the Mountain West Conference,” commissioner Craig Thompson said. Nevada officials said they will have five years to pay the exit fee and should recoup that money by playing in the more lucrative MWC.

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’ sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

    I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;

  56. expat August 19, 2010 6:41 am

The Sunbelt conference has been even more of a revolving door than the WAC — and they are still around. After the recent announced departures 2/3 of the current WAC played in the Sunbelt — only SJSU and Hawaii were never in the Sunbelt. NMSU, Utah State, and Idaho were also all in the Big West before joining the Sunbelt.

Unfortunately the sunbelt conference has been moving east — but there are some relationships there between current WAC schools and the others.

Doing something with the Big West would make a bunch of sense. SJSU is also being left out in the cold here and they were a founding member of the Big West. NMSU, Utah State, LaTech, and Idaho all once competed in the Big West (as did Boise State, Nevada, and Fresno State). So all current and recently departed WAC members were once in the Big West (well, the Women’s sports were for UH).

Maybe the existing WAC merges with the Big West, helps LaTech relocate to a more sensible geographic conference, and the football teams form a mini-conference or go semi-independant. Davis and Cal Poly SLO compete in football in the Great West conference which doesn’t make sense for them. If they jumped up along with Portland State (the largest public university in Oregon) there could eventually be a sensible football division within the larger conference.

The Big West would be a pretty good place for UH with the other sports. Until and if Davis et al became FBS teams the Big West football teams could all be “independent” but play in a conference style.

In terms of affiliations and geography it makes perfect sense at least for UH and SJSU to partner up with the Big West in some way.

  57. d1島 August 19, 2010 6:42 am

    Geez! Talk about hubris…

Fresno State fans shouldn’t wake up today feeling lucky to be accepted into the Mountain West. Their school actually saved the conference.

Looks like travel to Ruston and Las Cruces is what did in the WAC

Welty then talked about the Mountain West’s locations and market sizes, which gets to Benson’s other problem. No one wants to go to Louisiana Tech.

The idea of not having to fly to Ruston or Moscow or Las Cruces is not just appealing; it’s a decision-maker. To a department like Fresno State, having to furlough its coaches and cut back on everything from recruiting to copier paper, eliminating expensive flights is enormous.

Fresno State might look idiotic for agreeing to a buyout clause with a conference just two months before it left the conference, but it also shows it believed Benson and the WAC had a chance to win the war.

The WAC almost did and, ultimately, Thompson had to make a desperate play for two schools that weren’t good enough for him in June.

This wasn’t about the BCS though. This was about survival. And Fresno State saved him.

    re: Recruits

As Stretch & Garret mentioned yesterday, JD needs to take a proactive

approach and not wait until the dust settles. He needs to have a meeting

with his HC today to inform them of the direction UH is headed, so they

can inform the recruits to minimize desertion.

Shoji has completed his recruiting Class of 2011 last year with a probable

TOP 3 recruit in Jane Croson. Class of 2012 is almost complete and is

working on Class of 2013. What will happen to his recruits if he can not

respond to the recruit’s questions because he does not know the direction

    UH is taking?

This also applies to the present athletes.

  61. Kazz August 19, 2010 6:48 am

    BIG WEST CONFERENCE SPORTS:

    Baseball – men’s

    Basketball – men’s and women’s

    Cross Country – men’s and women’s

    Golf – men’s and women’s

    Soccer – men’s and women’s

    Softball – women’s

    Swimming & Diving – men’s and women’s

    Tennis – men’s and women’s

    Track & Field – men’s and women’s

    Volleyball – women’s

    Water Polo – women’s

In this case UH is the one that doesn’t have all the BWC sports, but that ONLY pertains to Track and Soccer as UH does not field men’s teams in these two sports.

-He feels the six schools will continue to contribute to the conference.

-Benson says there was a recording error and Nevada did NOT sign the binding agreement. However, Nevada president verbally agreed to the agreement on Saturday. Benson says that Nevada is subject to some sort of monetary penalty.

-As far as BYU is concerned, he hopes there still is an opportunity for BYU to be part of the WAC and is still open to those possibilites.

-Been in discussions with BYU since early July. Including future football scheduling.

-Benson acknowledged that he was aware an invitation to BYU may have caused the MWC to poach the WAC.

-Benson says the addition of a non-football member was explored before. Benson confirms that the NCAA football requirement of 8 football programs and that is obviously their concern at this time.

-Benson calls FSU and Nevada “selfish” as they were led to believe that there was some sort of stability in the WAC a few days ago with word of BYU joining and now there is nothing.

-WAC legal council says the 5 million dollar penalty is enforceable upon both Fresno State and Nevada and should be resolved within 60 days.

-Benson confirms that both schools did not meet the deadline to leave the WAC in 2011 and would be gone in 2012.

Still remains steadfast in proclaiming that the current WAC schools have “matured” in the WAC and can remain a viable presence in D1 football.

-says that some WAC presidents reached out to FSU and Nevada, Benson said was constantly talking to BYU and all of this was happening up until FSU and Nevada’s official decision to leave yesterday.

Change, like the shifting earth’s crust, is inevitable. Sometimes, you don’t feel it, but it is always happening and need a 7.1 to pay attention. I see this as the dawn of a new era for Hawaii collegiate athletics and we have capable people at the helm to guide the ship aright.

I love how the Tsai-kos throw in their lot and their talents to offer constructive and useful elements to assist this change.

So. As I see it, the foundation of truthfulness and trustworthiness- essential in any successful ling-term human endeavor has eroded and broken in collegiate sports. The whole BCS concept sacrificed integrity and fairness for $$$ and turned institutions of education into corporate raiders.

I wouldn’t pursue trying to get a piece of that short-sighted action. Too many have-nots are needed to support the haves.

What Hawaii can do is build it’s foundation on solid principles and invite other schools of like mind into the fold. Teams can improve with good programs and I would not put too much stock in antiquated benchmarks that determine meaningless divisions.

That’s my contribution. It’s up to those in charge to determine whether a complete overhaul into a sustainable program is in order, or a temporary fix is better for now.

Regardless, I am still a fan and supporter of UH Athletics and our University as a whole.

    We are ALL WARRIORS now!

    IMUA!

  72. whitey August 19, 2010 7:23 am

ie. Los Angeles, San Francisco Seattle, Minneapolis, even Chicago.

What schools there are potential UH opponents?

  74. Garret August 19, 2010 7:30 am

Benson says there was a recording error and Nevada did NOT sign the binding agreement. However, Nevada president verbally agreed to the agreement on Saturday. Benson says that Nevada is subject to some sort of monetary penalty.

Thank you Kazz for the summary. This part really interests me…it appears that someone in the WAC office made a mistake that resulted in Nevada not signing the agreement. And I noticed that Benson didn’t say that they had to pay $5 million…Benson just said they have to pay something. So the WAC’s mistake could save Nevada millions, and since the MWC is covering the buyout, it saves the MWC millions.

  75. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 7:31 am

No matter how this shakes out, I still have a great deal of renewed respect for Pat Hill. At the WAC Media Preview, he stepped up, adamantly promoting the WAC.

This is a crazy thought, but if the WAC ever decided it needed a new leader, maybe an associate commissioner in charge of football, I would choose Hill. He has national contacts, and that football coach’s growling attitude. Play anybody, anytime? That’s the way to go.

  77. Garret August 19, 2010 7:34 am

Benson confirms that both schools did not meet the deadline to leave the WAC in 2011 and would be gone in 2012.

Maybe the MWC would prefer Fresno and Nevada to play in the WAC in 2011. Their BCS numbers go down slightly with Fresno and Nevada (unless BYU is gone, then they stay about the same with the addition)…but the big thing for the MWC is if Fresno or Nevada win the WAC in 2011 (they will be the 2 favorites), that will rack of BCS points for the MWC.

The WAC would like Fresno and Nevada to stay in 2011 because it gives 1 more season to try to find replacements. Maybe the WAC will get what it wants…and Fresno and Nevada will be joining a BCS AQ conference in 2012.

  82. Garret August 19, 2010 7:36 am

says Sac State, Cal Poly, UC Davis have components to be a viable WAC member and says those schools expressed interest in the past to invest in a move to the WAC.

Those would be good additions geographically for UH, but the California State and UC systems are *really* getting squeezed on their budgets so I don’t think any of them have the money to move up to D-IA. And those schools expressed interest in joining a conference with BSU, Fresno, and Nevada–are they interested now?

  83. Garret August 19, 2010 7:38 am

    Pomai,

If BYU is a WAC member for football, ESPN will own their TV rights. ESPN pays 1/3 of what the MWC gets for TV and BYU earn far, far more than what the MWC gets.

  86. Pomai August 19, 2010 7:39 am

All WAC schools that remain in the conference need to beat the poop out of both fresno and nevada for the next two seasons, give the mwc two losers.

  87. Pomai August 19, 2010 7:42 am

Garret could the WAC make a deal with ESPN to exempt BYwoo from the TV part? To be honest if they did they won’t lose very much money if they would lose anything?

  88. Garret August 19, 2010 7:42 am

again that the only way FSU and Nevada could leave for 2011 is if there was a vote amongst the WAC presidents acting on the “best interest” of the conference.

Assuming that BSU doesn’t get to vote, there are 8 presidents that can vote. Obviously, Fresno and Nevada would vote for 2011. What if La Tech wanted to go to C-USA and UH wanted to go independent? That would result in 4 votes. La Tech has no invitation and UH probably wants to delay things, so I can’t see Fresno/Nevada winning the vote.

But if the WAC can make some mistake and end up having Nevada not sign the loyalty agreement, who knows what loopholes are in the exit agreement.

  89. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 7:44 am

I thought it was a sound business decision for the MWC to help Fresno State and Nevada pay for exit fees. Hey, when your loved one is in jail, you do what you need to do — second mortgage, loan, grabbing the money under the mattress — to pay for bail and the legal fees.

Time for the remaining six WAC teams to get together and start pooling money to save the league. Identify eight potential schools, by tonight, and offer invitations. If even two accept, you’re back in business. Offer travel subsidies for the first three years to new members. After that, travel subsidies are offered on a need base. And the travel subsidies don’t have to come from UH only. Maybe the league can offer grants.

  90. chawan_cut August 19, 2010 7:44 am

and how does this help the MWC with any of their BCS dreams? so far only undefeated non-BCS schools have been given a shot to party with the big boys. they’ve decreased their chances that much more.

i don’t recall what that almost impossible rule to get a conference BCS qualified, but what’s to say the BCS won’t change their own rules to nix that quick.

but we’re still screwed in either case. so much for TEAM unity. its all about ME, MYSELF and I.

how much do we stick to the WAC and how much do we look out for ourselves?

there’s a lot of callers calling in to this news conference. even bloggers. i wonder how we get that dial in #?

  91. Garret August 19, 2010 7:44 am

    Pomai,

The WAC is in danger of losing their entire ESPN contract. The only way to get ESPN to agree to exempt BYU would be to terminate the ESPN contract and end up with the WAC getting *no* national TV deal. But the other WAC schools probably cannot afford that $300k to $400k loss each year.

    Karl Benson Teleconference 08/19/2010

-says the current WAC presidents and athletic directors are very much interested in remaining under the WAC umbrella and looking forward to moving on.

-says any revenue coming into the WAC, no matter the source, is divided up based on the board’s decision. Says that the $5 million would come into play for the 2011-2012 when FSU and UNR will NOT be eligible for they year-end WAC money distribution.

-says they’ve evaluated LaTech’s membership in the WAC over the past few years, but does feel that C-USA is a better fit for LaTech and says the WAC is prepared for their departure, BUT the last 24 hours have changed things in the sense that LaTech now becomes a “more important member in the WAC”.

Fresno and Nevada did act selfishly. But, so what? It’s a business. If UH had an offer from the MWC, it would act “selfishly,” too. Look how giddy UH was that BYU was going to act selfishly yesterday morning.

Which goes back to the point: These other schools aren’t friends. UH might be friendly with them, but they’re not friends.

UH needs to act like a business. The MWC does not care whether its actions lead to UH’s hardships or, even, the closing of business. Just like UH and the WAC don’t care that if, it were the opposite way, what would happen to Wyoming.

    Time to get proactive.

  96. Garret August 19, 2010 7:53 am

    chawan_cut,

The BCS contract specifies the 3 criteria for a conference to automatically qualify for AQ status if they are in the top 6 for each criteria. They evaluate things over 4-year periods, with the 2008/2009/2010/2011 evaluation period possibly giving them AQ status in 2012. The AQ criteria is actually easy to understand.

    1. Highest ranked team in the conference. BSU by itself passes this criteria. TCU by itself passes this criteria.

    2. Number of teams ranked in the top 25 at the end of each season. With BSU (and without Utah), the MWC is actually #1 for all conference in this criteria! That is because they get a 25% bonus due to having just 9 teams. If you take BYU away, the MWC is still around #3 so they pass this criteria.

    3. Average computer ranking for the teams in the conference. The MWC was close to being #6 (the Big 10 was barely ahead of them), but the Big 10 adding Nebraska put some distance between the conferences. They will be #7 in this criteria, which gives them the right to go through the appeals process. Several other current AQ conferences also have to go through the appeals process because they aren’t in the top 6 in the first 2 criteria (since the MWC has one of the spots).

If the MWC adds Fresno and Nevada and loses BYU, they will still pass the first 2 and be #7 in the 3rd. My guess is that the MWC would get AQ status through the appeals process because if the MWC was denied then several other AQ conferences would also have to be dropped.

  106. Garret August 19, 2010 8:03 am

    chawan_cut,

I never posted this here because I didn’t want to cause a fuss, but you wouldn’t believe how close the *WAC* was to becoming an AQ conference. BSU by itself passed 2 of the 3 criteria for the BCS. The only thing the WAC needed was to have their teams have a higher computer ranking than the MWC.

During 2006 and 2007, the WAC’s top teams were as high or higher ranked than the MWC’s top teams. The bottom of the WAC though was worse and kept the WAC at #8 in the average rating. If they had taken less body-bag games, or won 5 or so key nonconference games against the MWC, the WAC could have jumped over the MWC and gotten close to AQ status.

A WAC with AQ status and an ESPN contract would probably have enticed a school like BYU to join…that would have pushed the WAC over the bar and gotten AQ status. But the bottom of the WAC in 2004/2005/2006/2007 killed that.

How many people here realized just how close the WAC was to going through the AQ appeals process? The WAC dropped significantly in 2008 and 2009, with the distance between the conferences giving the MWC a stronger AQ case. By taking BSU, Fresno, and Nevada, the MWC created a huge gap with the other non-AQs that will make their AQ appeal stronger.

  107. Warrior Expat August 19, 2010 8:03 am

Late to the board today. Thanks, Kazz for the updates from the teleconference. I was a bit stricken to read that Benson complained about FSU and Nevada being “selfish” — kind of echoes JD’s comment at the news conference yesterday that “collegiality” had been lost. The reason this struck me was not that I thought that they were wrong, but because they seemed surprised by this.

It troubles me if UH’s AD isn’t doing everything to protect UH’s interests, irrespective of how it affects the other teams, and if the WAC’s commish isn’t doing everything to protect the WAC’s interests, irrespective of how it affects other conferences. If their attitude and expectations are anything less, that needs to change right now.

  109. DaMenace August 19, 2010 8:06 am

Altho it was mentioned that Boise St. may not have played a role in this, I think otherwise. I believe when BYU approached the WAC with the proposal to come back in other sports, Benson knew this could cause the MWC’s membership to start eroding. Since he’s a Boise alum, I’d bet that he made a call to inform them of the pending situation in hopes of luring them back to the WAC or leaving the door open for them to come back.

My guess is that Boise St. gave this info to the MWC Commish who crafted the “go for the kill” plan to take apart the WAC. Boise St. knew that they still had better opportunities in the weakeded MWC than going back to the WAC, and looking like fools for making the jump too soon. I give Benson credit for trying to be proactive, but I think he was overzealous and let the cat out of the bag to early without covering all of his bases for counter manuevers.

  110. Garret August 19, 2010 8:06 am

    chawan_cut,

Texas State is in D-IAA and wants to get to D-IAA.

  111. shutb45 August 19, 2010 8:07 am

I think the remaining WAC presidents need to ask Karl Benson to step down. The WAC needs a leader that thinks outside of the box and is really aggressive. Through the Boise State departure and now Fresno State and Nevada departures, its seems as though Benson is in La la land not worrying about the house collapsing around him.

As Cindy Luis mention on her blog, how about contacting the Big West and merging with them. Maybe the football teams can act a pseudo independents for a few years till some Big West Members upgrade their football program or they can find members to come in as football.

Talk to BYU and remaining WAC Schools about going independent for a while, but have an agreement between all seven schools to play a home and away series for the next few years. That will at least fill 6 games for them.

With the addition of Big West schools in other sports, it might make an attractive conference for BYU to join without Football.

Benson needs to be more aggressive and innovative instead of sitting back and doing nothing.

“Amatuer athletics” in NCAA football?! Pfft…

  115. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 8:14 am

It is a good idea to approach the Texas start-up programs.

They’ll fill the void. But in a few years, and much success, don’t be surprised if they try to get into a neighboring conference. That’s economics. And geography.

As for Big West, that has been floated for several years. Good idea, maybe. Same problems: Are those schools wiling to travel to Hawaii?

Whatever the thoughts on Benson, he is indeed loyal to Hawaii. He understands Hawaii’s isolation plight and has been supportive. Maybe that doesn’t sit well with other schools.

  116. Kazz August 19, 2010 8:16 am

Before I prepare to head to the office. I’ll just say that everything I personally feel about all of this was expressed in Ferd Lewis’ story today.

Ask yourselves, “what was the FIRST UH sports figure mentioned in Ferd’s article today”?

    DAVE SHOJI.

This is a clear representation that I have repeated for months now. This is about ALL of UH athletics.

Without getting too much into it, I for one am taking this on a personal level. UH athletics has encompassed my life on several levels for a multitude of reasons. From UH football all the way to UH softball and everything in between…

I don’t care what anyone says, I am taking this personally.

  118. Garret August 19, 2010 8:21 am

    ST,

The dangerous part about other WAC schools hearing about UH’s interest in the Big West is that NMSU, SJSU, Utah State, and Idaho could all try to get into the Big West and they have lower travel costs and in some cases a better basketball record. If the Big West wants those schools and not UH, then UH ends up without an option to go independent.

  119. aka El Padrino August 19, 2010 8:21 am

    1. Stop looking outside to Benson, WAC, MWC and start looking inside to get our house in order. Now!!

    2. Great idea on the blog to turn over UHAD marketing to a third party: Cuts expenses and brings in true natioanl/international expertise instead of the hodge podge effort we see in operations at this time. Two ways to increase the budget: cut expenses, raise more $$

    3. If we truly have platinum level partners (HAL, Outrigger Chain) and booster clubs have partners (Big City Diner, Willows) then leverage their resources to cover opposing teams costs when travelling to Hawaii and stop mickey mousing with talk of 25% underwrite or 50% underwrite. Unite the efforts and show a value package to conferences or to Independents looking to schedule.

    4. Lobby the service academies and also lobby our members of congress. We have all three major branches of the service here in Hawaii who are represented in football via academies. This is going to take a true political ‘across the aisle’ effort on behalf of our representatives. If they won’t ‘play ball’ or ‘get in the pool’ (insert your favorite some metaphor) the report this to the UH community.

Presdient Pro Tem of the Senate is here for game 1; anyone see an opportunity to stage a media event to emphasize our needs??

    5. AKA needs to bring all booster groups to the table and outline a program of cooperation among the booster groups. Turf battles over resources is not going to get us out of the gate. Where is the cross over with the marketing department?? Where is the comprehensive plan? Enough of dartboard planning where a hit is as good as a miss. Turf battles over resources is not going to get us out of the gate.

    6. Jim Donovan needs other leaders, on and off campus, to step up and take part in an Athletic Campaign to steer a true course for UHAD. Bring the same old people together and we will get the ‘same old solutions”. Enough of the mission statements and the vison statements. It is time to lay down an atriculated and specific plan, distributed to all interested UHAD community members, with clearly stated goals and objectives (and timeline for meeting these), assign objectives to work groups, and get the job done.

    Imua!

  120. Warrior Expat August 19, 2010 8:21 am

Would we be better off in a weakened WAC that takes on a couple of FCS caliber schools, or by taking the plunge into independence?

My gut reaction is that the (albeit limited) security afforded even by a weaker conference is still the preferable choice. I always intended that when I moved back home, I’d be able to get season tickets and attend every game instead of having to listen to it on streaming radio. I hope I will still able to do that.

ST- This statement sums it up for Hawaii Athletics “Same problems: Are those schools wiling to travel to Hawaii?”

That’s to cold hard truth. We are the black sheep in college athletics because no one really gives a darn about a little school in the Middle of the pacific. Everyone from the NCAA to the individual colleges always have some excuse about not wanting to play here. Its too expensive, its too much travel time.

Probably if we folded up our athletic program no one would blink and eye and probably would be happy if Hawaii went away. They won’t have to deal with the hard journey to travel out to the middle of the pacific.

THe only loss would be no one gets a free trip in paradise.

  123. madeinhawaii August 19, 2010 8:32 am

Problem with the WAC is that none of the members want to take ‘ownership’ of it. I can’t think of any organization that can survive with that kind of attitude.

  124. San-Man August 19, 2010 8:39 am

What is the future of the WAC and can Benson calm the existing loyal WAC members? What can a new person do that Benson hasn’t done? If the other teams are using the excuse, “Airfare is too expensive!”, can UH arrange a charter via Hawaiian Airlines? Soooo many questions and too many what if(s). In short, can’t wait for Warrior Football!!!!!!!! Wheeeeeeee!!!!

    Garret #106

With the information you stated was this not important information to know especially by Benson and the WAC? Whoever is the leader of the MWC in plotting their future got information that was needed. They had a game plan and goals defined. They knew losing Utah, BYU or TCU would create changes and had contingent plans for it, ready to leap on it at warp speed.

Benson had one last bullet to fire with BYU, he took the shot and it missed. His MWC adversary knew Benson’s plan. As ST stated this is a business and it needs to handled as business. Secrecy and trust in the negotiating process is so important. Benson went about it the way he did and it failed.

My question to you Garret regarding this information is, how long ago did you figure this out?

By the way did Benson know of this type of information? If he didn’t that would be why the WAC is in trouble today. He was on a ship with no instrument to give him information on where he was, no rudder and destination to reach.

As I stated before Garret, you are an intelligent person and with important data you are able to more or less predict what would most likely happen. As you have written in many different views without being too negative on Hawaii, it is apparent your information puts UH behind the 8 ball at this time. However with your wits and your contacts you may want to help Donovan formulate a plan for the future success of UH athletics. I believe they should hire you as a consultant.

As I ate my Driscoll strawberries for breakfast thinking about

this WAC mess, I was wondering why they tasted like gasoline?

So I googled around and found that California is trying a new

    strawberry chemical that causes thyroid

    cancer in rabbits and rats…

“Lab tests involving rats and rabbits show methyl iodide can cause thyroid cancer and miscarriages.” The chemical, methyl iodide,

is dangerous to lab workers as well as farm workers. Case studies of people who were accidentally exposed to methyl iodide show “chronic, irreversible brain damage,” according to John Froines, a chemist at UCLA who chaired the independent review panel.

I wonder if Kelly Majam eats a lot of strawberries and grew up in

    that part of farm country?

  132. tarai August 19, 2010 9:04 am

The remaining WAC schools should cancel/drop a scheduled football game with Boise,Fresno and Nevada this season. Just say they are no longer viable members of the WAC. This would put a whole lot of problems on rescheduling their games and if they decide to sue- go ahead the season would be over and the damage done.

  133. (Jesse) James August 19, 2010 9:05 am

Good morning Tsaikos…whew….still digesting all of the information…

We may just need to join the Big West or some form of it and try to go independent in FB. We’ve been independent in FB before. it will be tough but we just have to roll up our sleeves and do it.

All I know is that the FB team needs to look at this and use it as fodder to light a fire under their arses and win. Beating down teams will only help our cause. JUST WIN BABY!!!! I know that if I were a player, I;d be PO’d right now and just want to turn all that anger/energy into intense play and wipe people out on the field. The WARRIORS need to do that. It needs to be put into their heads that the WAC defectors and MWC, as well as everybody else out there, doesn’t think we are any good….we need to prove them wrong. It is time to bring out the “little man” syndrome and lay down some wood. Locals all know how we often get dissed in the sports world and media. You know, questions like, “Hawaii is a State?” or “You guys don’t live in huts on the beach?” We need to work that much harder to prove everyone wrong. Come on WARRIORS…RISE UP….PROVE THEM WRONG….JUST DO IT!!!

  136. Mad Dog August 19, 2010 9:21 am

I’m so far back in reading WB that I posted my comment on yesterdays page. I’m reposting my comment to stir the pot and draw out more comments.

Boise, Fresno, and Nevada are gone. There isn’t much we can do about that. We have to look to the future to see what is best for the Hawaii sports program, not what is best for the WAC.

It seems that money is the driving force against Hawaii joining another conference. No one wants to consistantly travel to play Hawaii. Hawaii’s market doesn’t bring in the bucks for the sports networks.

How can we get the funds? Will a NFL team or the NFL itself “sponsor” Hawaii? Should Hawaii offer the PAC 10, 12, whatever that the member teams travel to Hawaii only once every three years instead of every other year to play us? In other words, Hawaii will become real road warriors.

Anyone else have other out of the box suggestions?

  137. gigi-hawaii August 19, 2010 9:21 am

Derek was right. Three kinds of people. Watch what happens, make things happen, wonder what happened.

Mack said he thought all the changes were pau. JD said UH been through tough times before and we’ll survive. Sorry boys, but sounds like wonder what happened and watching what happens to me.

  156. ZeroGravity August 19, 2010 9:53 am

In 1999 we were here before when the eight teams split off to create the MWC and at that time everyone was moaning about the fact that we had to add teams like Nevada-Reno and Boise State. Here we are now in 2010 moaning about losing Nevada-Reno and Boise State. The WAC has two years to find new member schools to complete and stabilize the conference which shouldn’t be too hard and in the end I think we’ll be O.K.

  157. rage777 August 19, 2010 9:55 am

Here is one suggestion that might be out-of-the-box, UH owns its own 767 jet. Then they schedule the football team and volleyball teams at the same time at the same place. So if the football team plays San Jose State on Saturday, the volleyball team plays on thursday and friday/saturday. This will be the same for when football is not in season, the baseball team can fly with the softball team or whatever has the season at the same time. This is not limited to two teams, you can take the swim team, golf team, track, whatever.

Then one of the community colleges (Honolulu) can open an airplane mechanics program that the students work on the planes with the professors supervising. The professors will tell the students what to do and watch very carefully and will inspect the work to make sure it is done correctly. Of course, before the plane takes off it will be inspected by the flight crew and regular mechanics.

Not sure how much a plane costs, insurance costs, maintenance costs, etc but if John Travolta can afford a 767 among other planes, can’t the State of Hawaii or University of Hawaii? Maybe we could ask Kelly Preston (John’s wife) who was born in Hawaii to lend us the plane.

  165. Michigan Warrior August 19, 2010 10:12 am

Like the reminder from chopsueyboy yesterday… which most of us have forgotten, including Mr. Reardon… travel to Hawaii for football for visiting teams is covered by the Hawaii exemption. That means, they are allowed to schedule one extra game to try to recoup their travel costs incurred on their Hawaii trip.

Does anyone know how much every (conference) team claims it costs them to come here for a regular season game? Is the difference between that cost, and how much they bring in for that extra game, still a red number for them? If so, then perhaps they need a self-examination to figure out how they can turn that into a positive number, instead of trying to blame it all on Hawaii’s costs.

They don’t have to schedule an extra game, but it’s available to them if they want it. In the past, even WAC members have opted to schedule an extra bye week, like LaTech has done this year. Others have scheduled an extra body bag game to make extra money.

They need to stop using us as a scapegoat. That exemption is in place for them.

  166. jm2375 August 19, 2010 10:16 am

    Good morning Tsaikos.

What a turn of events in the last couple of days.

The thing that worries me about going independent is the effect on the athletes as students. If they have to spend several weeks in the middle of the season on the road, it will affect their classroom time and in turn, their grades, and in turn, the APR. I’m sure it will also affect their competitiveness towards the end. The softball team, in Coolen’s words, ran out of gas, after spending 5 weeks on the road.

  167. Snow Cone Syrup August 19, 2010 10:17 am

  168. jm2375 August 19, 2010 10:19 am

BTW, it sounds like NaMaSU and LaTech should be offering the travel subsidies, not UH.

  169. Garret August 19, 2010 10:22 am

    Michigan Warrior,

The problem is that conferences also have to send their men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, softball, and other teams to Hawaii and they do NOT get the benefit of the Hawaii exception for those sports. Forget about football for now, think about all of those other teams traveling to Hawaii also.

For football, UH really got hurt when the NCAA increased the numbers of games from 11 to 12 without increasing the number of weeks teams can play. Playing a 13th game with the Hawaii exemption isn’t as ideal now when school need to leave a week for the conference title game (which didn’t exist before) and need bye weeks.

  170. Mad Dog August 19, 2010 10:28 am

    Garret,

Isn’t the logical solution to the 13th game situation is to petition the NCAA to increase the football season by one week citing increased player health and safety and UH’s financial situation? Of course, our rail system will be running all the way to Manoa by the time the NCAA acts on the request.

  171. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 19, 2010 10:29 am

If travel subsidies arent enough and the 1 additional game rule is not enough…

what is the problem?…do we have bad b.o. or something?

    i dont get it.

  172. Garret August 19, 2010 10:30 am

    Not an Expert,

I’m sure that the WAC must have know all about the BCS formula for years. I’ve actually been talking about things related to that for the entire time that this blog has existed. We have discussed over and over through the years how the bottom of the WAC needed to improve…that failure prevented the WAC from having any chance to pass the MWC.

There was no move that the WAC could have done until the WAC passed the MWC…and that sadly never happened. The WAC just needed to win more nonconference games, which I’ve said throughout the years on this blog and I focused on that several times. I even posted the nonconference numbers to this blog periodically, especially when I was upset at how the other WAC teams were letting the WAC down in nonconference play in past year. I didn’t do that much last season because UH was also guilty of that (especially the UNLV game, which helped the MWC and hurt the WAC).

All of the WAC knew that they needed to do better in nonconference games. However, in the past decade (not counting BSU), only UH went undefeated in nonconference play (2007 of course). The results on the field mattered, and the bottom of the WAC (plus schools like Fresno and Nevada) did not deliver.

I tried to gently mention how we should cheer for WAC teams in nonconference play. However, I understood how people can dislike rivals and wish for them to lose, so I didn’t press that.

  173. Garret August 19, 2010 10:35 am

    Garret,

Isn’t the logical solution to the 13th game situation is to petition the NCAA to increase the football season by one week citing increased player health and safety and UH’s financial situation? Of course, our rail system will be running all the way to Manoa by the time the NCAA acts on the request.

    Mad Dog,

Yes, that *is* the logical solution and it would make the Hawaii exception valuable again. Letting the season start a week earlier or end a week later would enable UH to schedule big-name schools and make it feasible for them to play at UH and still rest enough for their national title or conference title hopes.

The problem is that almost every conference will have a title game, so extending the season by a week is useless because they aren’t going to travel to Hawaii right before a title game. Making the season start earlier would be great, but then training camp would start too early for some in summer school and games would start well before classes begin. Starting too early would prevent students from attending games and would cost schools more money since they would have to pay to house the players for an extra week. UH pays for the use of the dance studios for camp and would have to pay for an extra week…and the whole reason the dance studios were used at first was that it was too expensive to house the players in the dorms.

  174. Kazz August 19, 2010 10:37 am

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

    Reduction in travel time too.

  175. Mad Dog August 19, 2010 10:38 am

  176. Jeff August 19, 2010 10:39 am

Sadly in the grand scheme of things athletics are just not that important to many people in Hawaii. You don’t see Lingle or Abercrombie, or even Hannemann (someone who loves to grandstand in front of the TV cameras) out there saying anything.

Donanvan said something last night that he was looking foward to finally balancing the budget next year, now with these moves it brings a whole new challenge. I’m afraid UH athletics as a whole may die as a result. John Burns would be rolling over in his grave today if he saw what was happening

    Kazz,

Ok fine, so we lease out a few F-22’s out of Hickam…Problem solved.

I’m just tired of us offering things in good faith and we get rejected after addressing the very issues that we were rejected in the first place for.

Is there any chance that UH is asking for certain things in return for giving subsidies? Like asking teams to wear pink bvd’s outside of their uniforms while they play….cuz that might be the reason.

  178. Garret August 19, 2010 10:44 am

Kazz is correct, one worry for schools (that is actually legitimate to me) is that the travel time to/from Hawaii costs their players an extra day of missed class time. Plus, the travel and jet lag hurts them in the classroom.

This is probably a bigger burden for sports like basketball when schools need to play 2 games during a weekend. But missing an extra day in classes is something that some people worry about. The travel hurts UH’s players also, something that has concerned UH’s coaches and players.

  179. Kazz August 19, 2010 10:49 am

    Jeff:

    August 19th, 2010 at 10:39 am

Sadly in the grand scheme of things athletics are just not that important to many people in Hawaii. You don’t see Lingle or Abercrombie, or even Hannemann (someone who loves to grandstand in front of the TV cameras) out there saying anything.

Then the UH officials from the Regents to the AD need to present something directly linking UH athletics to the state’s financial situation in a positive manner. (i.e. food and beverage sales at local merchants like Foodland and Daiei during UH football season)

The athletic department cannot do this by themselves.

  180. Garret August 19, 2010 10:57 am

I think the best option for UH is to go independent since I don’t see how the WAC will survive with so little schools and so many of their schools facing financial problems. Given that, the suggestions for what to do have been posted by many people already.

    1. Offer a travel subsidy to get the Big West to take all of the non-football teams. Without a travel subsidy it does not make sense for the Big West because UH doesn’t have a proven men’s basketball record of success and the travel will kill their tight budgets.

    2. Offer the late-night time slot to all networks. Everybody seems focused on ESPN, but ESPN didn’t care about showing UH for basically free with the WAC deal (they could have picked any UH game they wanted). UH might get more money from Fox or VS or CBS CS or some other channel that wants football in that time slot. National distribution is critical or teams will not travel to UH.

    3. Pay teams to play in Hawaii. UH doesn’t have to pay conference members to come to Aloha Stadium, but it will have to pay for nonconference opponents. The going rate is $1 million, but apparently the Big 10 is starting to offer up to $2 million. I’d prefer home-and-homes, but there may not be enough home-and-home deals to fill an independent schedule.

    4. Take several body-bag games per year, getting $1-2 million per game. Win some of those and you earn respect. Lose and at least you can pay for your Athletic Department.

  181. bb August 19, 2010 11:00 am

    How’s about that athletic fee!

That money will pay for students to watch some exciting teams that will be coming to town!

  185. Michigan Warrior August 19, 2010 11:15 am

Aside from basketball and maybe some baseball teams, we all know those non-revenue sports are along for the ride and incur a deficit every year anyway. So I don’t see how they can be part of the argument. Football and basketball brings in and pays for the majority of what athletic department costs ring up. So, it’s mainly those sports that we need to focus on. In other words, conference members use the excuse of travel costs to Hawaii. What they are saying is that their football program cannot generate enough funds (with either a home or away game in the year that they travel to Hawaii) to offset that cost, plus cover all of the non-revenue (@ Hawaii trips) sports as they normally do.

Okay, so do we know how much they spend per fiscal year for all of their respective athletics teams to make trips to Hawaii? I’m curious to know how much their bottom line is, and how much they need to make in a body bag game to make up for just their total incurred costs to Hawaii. If it’s in the red for everyone, what’s the main factor or top two or three factors that drive the costs up? Is it housing? Airfare? What? Once we understand everyone’s main concern, can we look for help or alternatives from partners?

I’m asking ’cause I don’t know… and I’d like to know. Wondering if there’s a way we can come up with creative solutions to age old complaints… that’s all.

  189. Michigan Warrior August 19, 2010 11:36 am

Too bad we only have Nevada at home this year. Both BSU and FSU games are at their places. Kinda have a feeling it’s not gonna be a welcoming atmosphere for those games. As long as we keep our cool on the field and pummel them… especially BSU, since it is their last year with us.

We’re supposed to be mediocre this year, according to most experts.

Time for our Shock and Awe campaign to begin!!!

  190. Kazz August 19, 2010 11:39 am

    Garret,

Independency for football and moving the other 18 sports elsewhere is indeed the most viable option at this time.

I looked it up and both the WCC and the BWC all field every single men’s and women’s sports UH competes in with the exception of football, men’s soccer, and men’s track and field. BTW, almost forgot the PCC no longer exists.

For football just concerned with filling the schedule for the later months as most teams are deep into conference play. UH fans will have to consider shelling out some money to see less favorable teams if they want this train to continue in the future.

The current and previous landscape of the WAC wasn’t glitz and glamour to begin with anyway. Sure FSU was ok in football, but everyone was looking forward to UH taking on BSU in football, but then when we get to the other spectator sports, the WAC in general didn’t present UH with marquee challenges with the exception of FSU in baseball and Nevada in basketball and of course the other money-maker for UH is Wahine Volleyball and they just put ALL WAC teams to shame.

So on the football side, the loss of obviously BSU and then FSU and UNR would be obvious, but independently looks like the chance of teams like a NMSU might be a dime a dozen.

  191. Michigan Warrior August 19, 2010 11:41 am

Actually, I’m kinda off on my assessment in #186. Member schools still have to send non-revenue sports teams to Hawaii even in years when they don’t face us at Aloha Stadium. So, I wonder what their costs amount to every year for their trips to Paradise?

That would give us solid numbers to work with in trying to come up with feasible plans.

  192. Kazz August 19, 2010 11:43 am

    BB,

It’s all geography. Simple as that. USU, Idaho, and even NMSU are more attractive to conferences than UH. 2,500 miles of ocean stands in the way.

USU has what? Men’s basketball…. and that’s about it.

If athletic competitive diversity were the MAJOR consideration in conference shifts we would be in a far better situation than we are as of today.

The sooner people realize it, the better off they may be for the sake of peace of mind.

  193. Michigan Warrior August 19, 2010 11:46 am

Like it’s been said before… we just “chose” the worst couple of years to suck at football and basketball. This, at a time when other sports are making huge strides forward!

  195. Matt August 19, 2010 12:04 pm

I read somewhere that BYU asked to play Utah State and UH every year in football as part of the WAC deal. That is probably why Utah State got the invite to the MWC. It was the MWC’s way of trying to keep BYU from leaving.

Pomai, is it true that the 2011 WAC Softball Tournament is being held in Fresno? If it is, they should change the location to maybe, Hawaii, instead. Why should Fresno get the Tournament when they are leaving.

  198. madder August 19, 2010 12:09 pm

As I read from a Rainbow fan some time ago; this thing should have been apparent. It was only a matter of time that this was going to happen.

It’s NOW time for Hawaii’s movers and shakers to get off their okoles and finally save UH football by getting serious.

    1. Seriously commit to recruiting the best players NATIONWIDE. There will be some who complain that UH football should be reserved for local players. This is bunk. Go after the best local players and assist the local schools in improving their programs. If need be, recruit a Big Time Coach – and not one who ‘s over the hill – to take ove the UH program, bring with him the Bigtime organization that UH so badly needs. This will mean paying a lot more in coaches’ salary and upgrading UH’s fledgling athletic program and facilities. But the problem has always been Hawaii desire to be Big while spending least. The Big-Time ain’t never cheap – but it pays off in the expansion of all the other sports, the University’s publicity and alumni’s involvement and additional funds for academic programs.

    2. With local high school and junior high programs, pressure -really pressure- the coaches to institute “speed” programs for their players. The speed of high school players from Florida is NOT from their being naturally faster; instead it’s from the concept of speed being emphasized from the start of their “Litlle League” programs. Local players (especailly Linemen) are slower because they’re been ALLOWED to play slower from the time theystarted football. Import the experts if you have to, but teach the locals how to run and play faster. (Look at the contrast in speed for mainland Samoan players and local Samoan players. It has nothing to do with natural ethnic speed – it DOES have to do with the speed emphasis put on the programs in which they are raised in. I noticed this first when watching the little league – high school football games while stationed in Florida. Speed is the norm. Black, white , Hispanic; all the ethnic groups are schooled in a faster type of game. You can also see this in the Southern schools. Fast, fast, fast.

    3. STOP relying on playing your games at home. Build your program so that you play half your games on the road and still be allowed the extra game. Hawaii should be made into an independent in the likes of Notre Dame and BYU and play (and beat) the Big Boys on the road. And share in the bigger payoffs from the t.v. coverage.

    4. Get serious about media exposure of the UH games. Have the Hawaii tourist industry sponsor a weekly re-cast of Rainbow football games to ESPN or any other outlet. In that way, the UH can be

viewed nationwide each week. Maybe the first two years can be at a loss – but the fruits will be apparent after people start noticing UH and the Islands. Don’t just hire the ‘local boys’ to film and design this media package; hire the BEST to do it. Hey, if you’re in Alabama or Iowa at 11 pm and you see that the previous week’s UH footaball game is available to watch on cable, you’ll watch it. And think of the advantages provided by this increased exposure in the terms of recruiting and tourism! EVERY UH GAME SHOULD BE AVAILABLE NATIONWIDE! You’ll probably have to pressure your local politicians to back you in this, but if the heads of the Hawaii Tourist Industry, media and fans demand this, it’ll get done fast.

    5. CHANGE THE GAME TIMES of UH home games so that At Least the results appear late Saturday ESPN and in the Sunday mainland papers. Night ESPN mainland broadcast couldn’t hurt.

    6. Drop the creampuff opponents and schedule the best football competition, both for home and away games. Become used to taking on Ohio State at Ohio State; Georgia at Georgia, Florida at Florida. Do that and you’ll get the recruits who Enjoy going into the Arenas and kill the Lions!

    7. And if you seriously want a good conference to be in, call in all your favors and re-work your financial packages to make it REALLY attractive for UH to be in one. Think the Pac 10 wouldn’t reconsider if Hawaii’s governor, politicians, media concerns and tourist big boys all called upon them with a major commitment to: Quickly upgranding the UH program and offering major financial incentives for teams traveling to Hawaii; playing half of UH games on the road, etc.? The only thing that UH should ask for are the relayed broadcast rights to all conference UH games. Think for a moment that with better players and coaches, UH couldn’t hold it’s own in the Pac 10 (or Pac 14?).

I know this has been rather long, but I’m hoping that someone with the moxie to move with it happens to read this and starts to think….

  199. d1島 August 19, 2010 12:09 pm

    Garret,

Making the season start earlier would be great, but then training camp would start too early for some in summer school and games would start well before classes begin. Starting too early would prevent students from attending games and would cost schools more money since they would have to pay to house the players for an extra week.

Not negating your argument but just pointing out that this has never been a problem for the Oregon system schools who typically start their Fall Semester late in September. #1 son would have about a 3rd of his season done by the time the rest of the student body got back to class. This was a plus in the sense that the student-athletes really only had to focus on the “athlete” part.

Hey, so I did some snooping and, nope, UH did not offer a scholarship to the guy who was visiting. They did offer to the other guy, but he’s on hold.

Interesting to note that both players came here on “unofficial” visits. They paid their own way.

  202. Warrior Expat August 19, 2010 12:20 pm

I think moving the game times up and scheduling more high profile games on the road would really help in making the program more visible and more watched. Our underdog status and the “David and Goliath” feel of those games, even if we get beaten, might inspire a cult following among those who wouldn’t otherwise watch UH play. Everyone loves rooting for an underdog: during the 2007 Washington game, I was the only Hawaii fan in a crowded sports bar in LA (I could barely get the bartender to put the game on even one TV)–but by the end of the night, the game was on every TV in the bar and everyone there was hi-fiving each other when Hawaii pulled off the comeback.

Surely not a silver bullet, but I think we need to think about doing everything we can to make a bad situation better.

  203. Derek August 19, 2010 12:23 pm

There should be a study on traveling going east or west. Teams coming to Hawaii are gaining time, either by 3 or 4 hours from the west coast or mountain time. In the case of La Tech it’s about 5 to 6 hours difference Hawaii going east to the mainland is losing time by the same amount. I would think that Hawaii going east is more at a disadvantage and more difficult for us. Plus, in Hawaii it is at sea level. Hawaii has gone to play in high altitude, snow, sleet, cold, etc. and has more obstacles to overcome. So, what’s the beef from the other teams. To me, it’s all just a big excuse. Teams talk about expenses of travel, study time for the kids. Hawaii has to experience the same things so to me that’s a wash. And, it’s not like teams have to come to Hawaii every year. It’s home and home. Coming to play in Hawaii every other year is not going to break the bank. Let’s face it and let’s be honest. It could be a case of discrimination against Hawaii. Think about it. Our President is from Hawaii. At this point, the best we can do and is in our control is that our football team beats USC in the season opener and we go on from there. That will open some other peoples eyes for sure.

First, the WAC including Benson, the school’s Admin, and ADs all got caught with their pants off – not the first time either and this is where I need to be opposite of ST( #99 ) cause history did repeat itself and same ones got burned, AGAIN. If we don’t look at what happened and learn from it then we are for the worse. This consumed me most while in the military as every mistake I made cost us lives and material – especially lives! How does a leader write to parent(s) that your son died because I’m a lousy leader who failed to be the best in leadership, managerial skills, and tactical knowledge! I felt I could not do that and hold my Hawaiian head high!

Second, is it best, at this time, to be a lower tiered conference (accept lower ranked schools and allow them time to grow) or be gone? Entry fee, if one exists, can be scheduled to be paid off in 5 years. Exit fees, within 30-days. All President’s must sign a pledge and legally binding upon his/her successors.

Third, recruiting will take a beating for all sports.

Fourth, if and only if, UH cannot find a conference affliliation, why not change the focus to summer and winter “olympic” sports – and, no, HF will NOT return or be welcomed back as AD!!!

  209. Warrior Expat August 19, 2010 1:00 pm

Cannot see you paying that amount to see teams like Cal-Poly, or Cal-Irvine. Use that money instead for Wahine Volleyball, or Basketball, you will still get some money back in change.

  213. Kazz August 19, 2010 1:22 pm

    RE: 2011 WAC Softball Tournament

WILL be hosted by Fresno State at Bulldog Stadium.

The WAC track championships will be hosted by UH in 2011 and apparently the WAC doesn’t think UH can handle two tourneys. Or if it’s some kind of conference rule where one school cannot host two tournaments, but that can’t be the case because in one season the WAC Women’s Volleyball Tournament and the WAC Baseball Tournament were both hosted by UH in the fall 2008 and spring 2009 seasons.

Then again they were different sports seasons so who knows?

  214. Kazz August 19, 2010 1:24 pm

    Warrior Expat,

Coach Mack essentially said the same basic comments Jim Donovan said yesterday about Hawaii being in tough times before and we can get through it and how he has this season to focus on and that is what he is doing along with the team and his staff.

  215. Steve August 19, 2010 1:25 pm

PLEASE, will someone get June Jones back here pronto. He was the only proactive person in the athletic department. We need him badly since everyone there is reactive.

  216. Garret August 19, 2010 1:26 pm

Regarding the article that said that Utah State turned down an invitation from the WAC…didn’t the media report yesterday that Fresno State and Nevada turned down the MWC, and then a few hours later the MWC made their offer official and the 2 schools immediately accepted? So, I don’t know how much I can buy the “rejection” of the MWC by Utah State.

Frankly, I think that Houston is a much better choice than Utah State because they have a good computer ranking for football and a big market. But if the MWC wants another WAC school and they want to have a team in the state of Utah, Utah State is their option. Utah State has a good basketball team and a higher computer ranking for football than UH.

  217. Garret August 19, 2010 1:27 pm

If that is the case and they were shocked to see Fresno State and Nevada leave, I wonder if they would call the MWC and try to accept the invitation then…

  223. Steve August 19, 2010 1:31 pm

Kazz, why give a school that is leaving the honor of hosting a championship tournament? But then again, this is the WAC, tells you how much the administrators care about the conference. Give the school that is leaving, especially the way they are leaving, the reward and honor to host a tournament, does that make any sense to anyone?

  224. Garret August 19, 2010 1:31 pm

Utah State made it official that that turned down the MWC and they explained their reasons for it. This is straight from their AD on their website:

When the possibility of BYU leaving became known, MWC leadership contacted three WAC members inquiring about their interest in joining the MWC. Utah State was the first of these three contacts.

At the point in time when Utah State was contacted by the MWC we had a binding agreement with the WAC and were well positioned with nine members, which included BYU. We were simply committed to uphold our agreement with fellow WAC members. We respectfully declined MWC interest and believed all WAC members would remain committed to our agreement.

    http://www.utahstateaggies.com/genrel/081910aab.html

  226. Garret August 19, 2010 1:33 pm

So, Utah State was invited first and turned the offer down. If they had been called *after* Fresno State and Nevada had accepted, they kind of imply they would take the offer. This open letter from their AD could be interpreted as a way to ask the MWC to please offer them again.

If Utah State leaves also, there is no way the WAC can survive. If Utah State can be picked before UH, UH has no appeal to any other D-IA conference.

  227. Steve August 19, 2010 1:33 pm

I firmly agree with you Koakane, about the tournament championship hostings.

  228. Kazz August 19, 2010 1:33 pm

Easily USU turned down the MWC offer off the rest of the news we were getting here in Hawaii yesterday morning that BYU’s non-football programs were being added to the old 8 team WAC make-up.

I bet they’d kill for a time machine.

  229. Warrior Expat August 19, 2010 1:35 pm

If we take USU’s AD at his word, I have to respect the school’s commitment to its promises. Unfortunately, however, no good deed goes unpunished…

  230. Garret August 19, 2010 1:35 pm

Basically, this is Utah State’s signal that they will accept once the MWC offers them officially. They also get to avoid the backlash of being the school that broke up the WAC.

  231. Warrior Expat August 19, 2010 1:35 pm

    Or maybe I’m being naive.

  232. Garret August 19, 2010 1:37 pm

    Warrior Expat,

Remember, Fresno State and Nevada turned down their first “offers” from the MWC. Once the offers were made official, they accepted. So, Utah State can end up in the MWC and be the good guys at the same time.

  233. koakane™ August 19, 2010 1:37 pm

    Steve,

I understand what your advocating but we need to increase our support, stand together and be onipa’a with UH.

  234. Jeff August 19, 2010 1:40 pm

Yup end of UH athletics as we know it.

  235. Garret August 19, 2010 1:40 pm

If Utah State leaves, the WAC has:

La Tech that is begging to go to C-USA. Until yesterday, Karl Benson had been publicly saying that the WAC would be fine with them leaving for C-USA.

NMSU that had cut its athletics budget by $3 million more, where before they had so little money they had to ask their fans to bring juice boxes for their players to drink after training camp because they couldn’t afford a training table.

SJSU which has had major budget problems in the past but is actually in decent financial shape now due to taking any body bag game they are offered. They even broke their contract with Stanford to take a paycheck game.

Idaho, the only WAC team left that went to a bowl game last season.

UH, which needs to go independent.

  236. Warrior Expat August 19, 2010 1:41 pm

Garret – Very good point I had not thought about. My thinking is that if I’m USU and looking out purely for self-interest, I’d scoop up that invitation immediately (who knows if it would still be good in 24 hours), particularly since among the WAC programs, USU isn’t Fresno/Nevada quality. The backlash apparently didn’t bother Fresno and Nevada, and I doubt it would have stung USU that much.

I think you’re probably right, but I still find it interesting that USU turned the offer down. Of course, as you point out, if the offer is still good, they may well take it now.

  237. Ipu Man August 19, 2010 1:46 pm

    Maybe Obama can help?

    Anyone at Punahou know him?

    What can he do?

Force Army, Navy and Airforce to join the WAC…

  238. Duster August 19, 2010 1:49 pm

I really don’t see the USU AD’s letter as a veiled request to the MWC for another offer. It looks like a CYA thing – an effort to explain why USU is still in the WAC to USU boosters and supporters. It was going to get out that USU was offered by MWC at some point in time, so telling everyone that USU stuck to its principles and honored its agreement and commitment to the rest of the WAC puts the appropriate spin on things. The USU president and AD have jobs they want to keep, right?

USU is probably more open to bolting from the WAC to make MWC a 12 member conference, but my recollection is that Benson secured some type of commitment from the WAC-6 to hang in this together. I wonder how strong those principles and commitment will be now.

  239. bb August 19, 2010 1:50 pm

    One more….

    Then we become Pac-5

    Damn..that name taken already.

  240. Kazz August 19, 2010 1:51 pm

    Steve,

The decision for FSU to host the WAC softball tourney was done months ago.

I believe LaTech was in the running too before Fresno State was given the tournament.

  241. Ipu Man August 19, 2010 1:51 pm

And cut defense costs by closing down Annapolis and move it

to San Diego trimming its fat and waste along the way.

And move West Point to the Presidio in San Francisco trimming

    its buracracy, too.

  242. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 1:54 pm

So, if everyone knows Utah State was on the invite list and, maybe, now it will accept, UH needs to cut in line. Make an all-out proposal. Travel subsidies, giving up TV money, even be willing to play back-to-back road games instead of home-and-home.

  243. madeinhawaii August 19, 2010 1:55 pm

Why not a loosely held confederation of football teams, if not a formal conference?

A group that agrees to play each other at least once every two seasons or three. This could be a combination of D1a and D1aa and encompass a wide area for a greater TV market share. This would help cut the costs of travel as teams would only come here once very other year while expediting the booking of games during the more difficult to book months. This way a single marketing body/agency could still represent the teams to negotiate the best TV/Cable/and or Satellite deals around.

  244. Warrior Expat August 19, 2010 1:57 pm

Stephen, that idea makes sense, any idea whether JD and the rest of the UH Admin would consider a course of action like that?

  245. Ipu Man August 19, 2010 1:57 pm

Think of the money the pentagon can save…

no more overcoats for the cadets and midshipment…

  246. Steve August 19, 2010 1:58 pm

Kazz, #242, it is not to late to take it away from them, and give it to a WAC member, which I do not consider Fresno to be. If a MWC conference championship was scheduled to be held at Utah, do you think the MWC would still allow Utah to host, I do not think so.

  247. Kazz August 19, 2010 1:58 pm

UH NEEDS TO “DO IT LIVE”!!!!

**** IT! WE’LL DO IT LIVE!!!!

(look up “Bill O’Reilly” on YouTube and you will laugh at the reference above)

  248. Hawnstln August 19, 2010 2:01 pm

Been reading all the posts since last night. When you get down to the real substance, you realize that JJ had it right when he stated as a goal, that Hawaii Football had to be rated in the Top 25 each year … to survive. That was five years ago! He was right!! I hope everyone understands that all the other sports, in order to exist, must take a back seat to football. You don’t have to look very far to see examples – Boise, Fresno, Utah, Colordo and even Nevada. So lets stop all the grandstanding and emotions. Whether we grow the WAC or go independent, the FOOTBALL program, no matter what it takes, has to be very successful. What will it take and what can we do? Donations to NaKoa, sold out stadiums for every game, complete support of Coach Mac and a commitment from local and mainland recruits to support the team that plays for Hawaii. Stay home and help us win!!

  249. Kazz August 19, 2010 2:01 pm

    Steve,

    For real.

I know there is this quaint little softball stadium that is home to the 2010 WAC Champions, the 2010 Stanford Regional and Tuscaloosa Super Regional Champs, the NCAA home run hitting record title holder, the2010 individual home run hitting leader, and a 2010 NFCA National Player of the Week honoree.

Not to mention several All-Americans. 😎

So yeah, maybe give this place a shot to host huh?

  250. Matt August 19, 2010 2:02 pm

UH should offer to pay the departure fees for Nevada and Fresno if they (UH) are invited to the MWC. No travel subsidies, but $10 million up front. Money now is better than money later. Plus, that would guarantee two votes in UH’s favor.

  251. Ipu Man August 19, 2010 2:06 pm

    shoulda, coulda, woulda…

  252. Kazz August 19, 2010 2:11 pm

I think no one here has a problem acknowledging that sports other than football are and will take a backseat to football.

    That’s fine.

What people like myself have a hard time accepting is that these non-football playing student athletes that have also represented UH and Hawaii in general and have gone on to do amazing things on a national stage are in danger of being left out in the dark over time.

It’s not right when you look at a program like Wahine volleyball, Warrior volleyball, water polo or softball and think that all they’ve done in their respective sports doesn’t account for anything when conference re-alignment is looking to swallow everything in it’s path unless it’s based on ONE sport.

I only hold season tickets in football, but I probably spend more on all the other sports as I buy individual tickets. Each of them make me proud to sit there wearing a green shirt. Just ask anyone that sits near me during these games. From football to softball and basketball, volleyball, and baseball in between, it’s all the same to me.

For the purpose of greed and closet discrimination it’s obviously not the same.

I can’t do anything for public perception, but I ain’t going to be quiet about it either.

But yes, this is root of my concerns.

  253. Ipu Man August 19, 2010 2:12 pm

    Hey, it is “our” WAC…

    UH practically owns it.

We still got the Sheraton Aloha Bowl…

    Think positive.

  254. Kazz August 19, 2010 2:15 pm

Any word of the meeting today between the WAC presidents?

  255. Duster August 19, 2010 2:15 pm

I know I risk being marched out in front of the firing squad for this line of thinking, but here it goes.

MWC does not appear to be inclined to offer Hawaii under any circumstances. The only UH it wants is Houston. With that said, USU is the one remaining WAC member who has any attractiveness. My suggestion is to align UH with USU, for better or worse, and try to make the WAC work somehow. While Fresno State and Nevada decided to move to MWC, the remaining members have some value to BYU in terms of sports other than football. USU, NMSU and La Tech have decent men’s basketball programs, and the Wahine and NMSU are the class of the WAC in women’s volleyball. Those are the programs that BYU seems to support most among the non-football ones. In addition, since the non-football sports participate in NCAA tournaments, BYU’s teams would only need to win the conference to make it to dances – something that did not change with the impending departure of Fresno State and Nevada. For football, BYU apparently wants to be independent yet play USU and Hawaii (maybe Fresno State and Nevada). The WAC could ensure that BYU plays USU and Hawaii during the time period when conference games are in full swing to enable BYU to pull off the independent thing.

I know UH should keep its options open, but if we can trade Fresno State and Nevada for BYU, I think it’s okay. We’ll just need to develop and add new members because La Tech may eventually leave for CUSA (which is something they’ve been open about) and BYU may be setting up something to join Texas and some form of Big-12 in the future.

  256. Ipu Man August 19, 2010 2:16 pm

I’d like to have been a fly on the wall at their meeting…

  257. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 2:23 pm

JD is doing a news conference today.

I think he should be calling Craig Thompson instead.

  258. Kazz August 19, 2010 2:24 pm

    Garret,

You got the X. So are you running Android 2.2 yet?

So much rumors and hearsay at this point. I’m getting mine next week. I think at this rate by then the X should be running the Froyo update.

    Stephen Tsai:

JD is doing a news conference today.

I just hope this one has some outlook or plan for the future.

  260. d1島 August 19, 2010 2:27 pm

At a presentation at BY-Who today, AD Tom Holmoe did a 50-minute presentation highlighting Cougar athletics this past year then before taking questions said that he wouldn’t divulge anything about strategies or on-going talks but did say:

“We have some incredible options available to us because of BYU broadcasting and the friends that we have across the country. We’re going to look to make sure that we build on those things and take advantage of those things. We’re trying to put ourselves in position to be the best we can, which is exposure across the country, letting our kids shine in the bright lights.”

  261. bb August 19, 2010 2:27 pm

what could JD say today that was different than yesterday?

    Im calling it…

“It is in the university’s best interests that the Chancellor and I have decided that we are going to leave the WAC and immediately work towards having our football team becoming Independent”

  262. Warrior Expat August 19, 2010 2:27 pm

What time is JD’s conference and will it be available via web?

  263. Duster August 19, 2010 2:30 pm

Is JD’s news conference going to be on live somewhere? Or is Kazz going to give us the much appreciated blow-by-blow?

  264. bb August 19, 2010 2:31 pm

anyone notice that 1420 this morning started at 5:45 AM? then they did about an hour of the presser?

they gotta be doing JD’s announcement that we are going indy

    bb:

    August 19th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

what could JD say today that was different than yesterday?

Everything JD said yesterday was nothing new.

Announcing independency would be new. I’d put money on that too.

  266. OldDiver August 19, 2010 2:33 pm

    #250

I agree JJ had the right idea. Problem is he didn’t leave us with top 25 recruits. JJ was a visionary in some things, but not all things. My feeling though is if JJ was head coach of UH today his attitude would be to wave his middle finger at the MWC and then go undefeated again.

  267. Justin August 19, 2010 2:35 pm

If UH goes independent, then surely the WAC will disband. Would Nevada and Fresno still have to pay the departure fee?

  268. bb August 19, 2010 2:38 pm

    Kazz…

    maybe its all a “work”

    Its all an elaborate work…

  269. Kazz August 19, 2010 2:40 pm

If independency is announced, it better only be for football and they better have had a plan for the other 18 programs.

  270. Matt August 19, 2010 2:44 pm

Maybe the WAC becomes a non-football conference and the remaining schools along with BYU sign a deal to play each other as independents for football.

  271. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 2:46 pm

I think the news conference is just an informational update for TV stations.

Here’s what I think will be said:

    • No invitation from MWC yet.

    • No invitation to prospective WAC members.

    • No decision yet on whether to go independent or remain in WAC.

  272. Ryan August 19, 2010 2:49 pm

Why would we even get a “sniff” from the MWC? We have a sub-par football program that’s not worth the time and money for other teams to want to face. Let’s be honest with ourselves. Get rid of Mack and build a real program. That’s when we’ll get the respect we deserve.

  273. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 19, 2010 2:51 pm

DrDoc and I hold season tickets for six sports and have been ardent Wahine softball fans since 2005 so we do have a stake in the outcome here.

I agree with Kazz in his #254. Football is not the only sport that makes UH a winner in intercollegiate athletics AND academic achievements. Furthermore, as I said in my testimony at the student fee hearing in July, the Title IX program has opened access to higher education for women in all fields, not just intercollegiate athletics. We need to acknowledge this when we talk about the future of intercollegiate sports at whatever level.

As for those of you who have expressed concern about what’s happening downtown, I can attest that key people are indeed stepping up to get involved. Most everyone had assumed that the issue had been back-burnered for 18 months, but in the space of one day, that has now changed.

    Back to work –

  274. Steve August 19, 2010 2:51 pm

ST, why the update if nothing has changed since yesterday? Were they all not there for the news conference, yesterday?

  275. Kazz August 19, 2010 2:53 pm

    Stephen Tsai:

That’s a great video!!! How about coming here and doing one for UH???

  278. OldDiver August 19, 2010 2:56 pm

What’s the difference between going independent or staying in a six football league WAC? At least we have five teams to play which means we need to look for 7 to 8 more schools to play us. Finding 11 or 12 teams to play seems impossible. Just asking.

  279. Steve August 19, 2010 3:00 pm

I always felt, until now, that the Chancellor was a proactive person. I guess I was wrong, she is like everyone else over there, A REACTIVE PERSON!!!!

Well, at least COLT is getting some reps.

Colt Brennan gets chance, quick throw Ford vs. Routt vs. Routt in face of McClain blitz. Then finds No. 87 vs. blitz . . .

Not to be outdone, Bodiford 1-hands Brennan pass, not to be outdone. Nick Miller catches Brennan slant.

Eugene picks Brennan deep pass . . . goal line Brennan incomplete to end zone . . . vs. double tight ends on goal line, no CBs on defense

Brennan flips to Alex Daniels at goal line, practice over

    and btw:

Charlie Frye on IR after wrist surgery, Cable says its a 4-5 month rehab . . .

    GO COLT!

Beware BYU going independent (UH also i guess)

    He appears to know something!

  290. Steve August 19, 2010 3:21 pm

    Hey folks,

It is nice and simple, Wahine Volleyball makes money, start charging a small fee to see Wahine Softball, the other sports Men’s Volleyball and Basketball, and even Wahine Basketball, with the coaches they have in place will start to make money, this will make the Athletic Department financially sound. Have those sports in the Big West. Notice I did not mention anything about football, a money loser. Can those 4 or 5 sports carry the rest, excluding football, I believe they can.

  291. Justin August 19, 2010 3:21 pm

It’s already difficult for UH to schedule opponents in football. How would going independent make it better? If this is the case, UH might need to be vastly improved for the football team to stay irrelevant in the minds of poll-voters, other schools, and even recruits.

  292. Last Call August 19, 2010 3:22 pm

  295. madeinhawaii August 19, 2010 3:27 pm

Better wait and see… try to collect something from the 10 mil due from Nevada and Fresno before announcing any WAC or no-WAC decision.

  296. papajoe2 August 19, 2010 3:27 pm

Make the WAC attractive to other schools instead of using the WAC as a stepping stone. Let them have their own TV contracts. Maybe nobody (TV) cares, but then maybe teams like BYU and, who knows, maybe even other MWC teams may want to come over to the WAC. PAC 10 teams? Maybe. What about the Big 12 teams that want to have their own TV contracts? If it is feasible like BYU’s then what would keep them from asking the WAC for “ins”. I know there are other ways to make the WAC attractive, in my frustration, I just cannot think of any right now. Maybe, with their own TV contract, BYU will join the WAC in football too. Its like California (the state) being liberal with their laws a few years ago.

  303. papajoe2 August 19, 2010 3:40 pm

Did anybody else notice that since Hawaii started winning games consistently against some pretty good teams and putting up some great statistics, all of a sudden bigger teams started to pull out of games with UH? Before they thought they could come here for an easy victory and a mini vacation, but now they have to really prepare against UH or risk losing to a “weak” WAC team. So they start making excuses why they don’t want to come here. Old timers, remember when Hawaii had a good record in basketball with Red and Bruce’s teams? The mainland teams was using the excuse that they were homered. Yet when we travel and get “homered” on many, many occasions, not only in football or basketball, the media just says we lost and praises the victorious teams. Maybe teams are afraid of losing to Hawaii so don’t want any part of us. IMUA HAWAII!! IMUA WARRIORS!! IMUA WAHINE!!

  304. Shoko August 19, 2010 3:41 pm

  307. Old School Dave August 19, 2010 3:50 pm

Say no to BYU. Go independent instead. Why be a part of their quest to spread the word about the “virtues” of BYU (i.e. Mormonism) via their network. No reason why UH can’t start their own Warrior Network.

  308. Justin August 19, 2010 3:54 pm

    @Old School Dave

Even if UH had it’s own network, who would watch? It’s difficult for UH to fill the stadium, even with big name teams. And most home games are played 10:30 pm EST. It might be more of a money losing venture than an improvement to the athletic department.

  309. Ipu Man August 19, 2010 3:54 pm

Actually in this case, a verbal promise is no less “legal” than a written one. It’s just harder to prove.

  312. mctruck August 19, 2010 4:04 pm

So, I’m sitting down and just wondering to myself???…..while BSU/NV/FSU, still in the WAC….word on the media street across the nation said, not a chance for BCS inclusion.

Now all three amigos go to the MWC in hopes that the MWC will become BCS eligible, what with two of the cornerstones of the MWC,(Utah & BYU) exiting????…I’m scratching my head trying to fathom this theory??

  313. mctruck August 19, 2010 4:07 pm

I’m sure TCU and LaTech, are thinking of moves themselves and it does not include staying in the WAC or the MWC.

  314. Justin August 19, 2010 4:07 pm

    @Expat

If Benson has a signed contract from 7 of the 8 WAC presidents regarding the departure fee, would that make it easier to prove that Nevada also agreed and just ‘forgot to sign’? Its kind of fishy that they were the only ones w/o a signature.

  315. Warrior Expat August 19, 2010 4:11 pm

@Justin: Not necessarily, if Nevada wanted to play hardball and say they never agreed, orally or in writing, they’d just say that the fact their signature isn’t there is further proof that they objected to the whole thing.

Who was it anyway who said that Nevada agreed in conversation, but never actually signed the document. Was it Benson or was it someone at Nevada? Has Nevada ever actually disputed that they agreed to it (regardless of whether they signed the doc)?

  316. Shoko August 19, 2010 4:24 pm

From my understanding, Milton Glick (UNR President) was not able to attend the conference and thus was not able to sign the agreement. However, it was agreed verbally, perhaps via phone conference, that the exit fee was agreed upon. Nevada, at this point, has not challenged their commitment to the 5 millions dollar exit fee. Of course, things could change.

  317. Da Punchbowl Kid August 19, 2010 4:31 pm

  318. Pomai August 19, 2010 4:33 pm

The sad thing is that the BCS boys are sitting back laughing at all this because no matter they will not let the mwc into their circle, they will do everything they can to keep all the marbles. IMHO all of this is for naught.

While there is an axiom that an oral agreement is not worth the paper it is written on, there is the problem that the conference members all agreed and relied on each other in this agreement, that they would stick together through thick and thin, or otherwise pay or forfeit $5M if anyone decided to cop out.

There is a principle of equitable reliance that says that you really don’t have to have it in writing if there was agreement, everyone relied on everyone else to keep their word etc.

  320. Steve August 19, 2010 4:37 pm

Pomai, off subject, do you think people would pay a minimum amount to see Wahine Softball? Also, have you seen any of the new recruit, if so, how do they look?

SHOKO: The Chairman of eBay is a resident of our State, a graduate of Punahou (his Jr. and Sr. year) and endowed x millions for the new K-1st grade complex there.

Might be better he, than Bill/Melinda Gates.

Then there is Dr. Larry Tseu …

  322. Garret August 19, 2010 4:45 pm

Make the WAC attractive to other schools instead of using the WAC as a stepping stone. Let them have their own TV contracts.

    papajoe2,

The WAC *already* lets its schools have their own TV contracts. That is why UH has the deal with K5/Oceanic and with PPV. Even after giving that to teams, nobody wants to stay in the WAC.

My comments of the Gates were made facetiously. However, you make a good point. Establishing a network comprised of people with local ties to the state with big money can only benefit the school, given they have a vested interest in UH sports.

Thanks for the info! I was not aware the the CEO of eBay had ties to Hawaii, or Dr. Larry Tseu. Good to know. 🙂

I know we of the booster club will be working as hard as we can to get more butts in the seats this coming season, by having different promotions an other things. If and this is a big if, the girls reach their set goal for this season then they will have to move to the baseball stadium to get everbody in. I again invite all of you to join our club an help support the Na Wahine, but better still even if you don’t, come out to the games, I’ll tell you now you won’t be disappointed.

  332. Garret August 19, 2010 5:03 pm

What’s the difference between going independent or staying in a six football league WAC? At least we have five teams to play which means we need to look for 7 to 8 more schools to play us. Finding 11 or 12 teams to play seems impossible. Just asking.

    OldDiver,

You need 8 football teams to be a football conference. A 6 football league WAC would *not* be a football league, so there would be no conference games to play. I seriously doubt that schools like NMSU and SJSU could afford to go independent, so they would drop out of D-IA immediately.

  333. Shoko August 19, 2010 5:04 pm

    Make the call, MIH.

  334. Shoko August 19, 2010 5:07 pm

Hows the new project going with the Men in Black? 🙂

  335. Da Punchbowl Kid August 19, 2010 5:10 pm

Has anybody thought of asking SMU to join the WAC?

    Just sayin…

  336. Garret August 19, 2010 5:10 pm

Did anyone notice that Nevada’s President specifically cited travel to Hawaii as one reason why they wanted to get out of the WAC?

“There’s a whole bunch of reasons that this makes more sense for us but the travel is a big one,” she said, pointing to football games on the road this year at both Hawaii and Louisiana Tech.

  337. Garret August 19, 2010 5:12 pm

Nevada’s President also mentioned that the $5 million number would be less if BYU doesn’t join the WAC…and mentions that the exit fee can be spread out over 5 years. If that is true, what WAC will be around to collect things in 5 years?

Glick said Nevada understood the exit fee with a “high end” of $5 million was contingent on BYU joining the WAC and that if BYU did not join, the fee would be something less.

“We believe that whatever that exit fee is, if you spread it out over five years, we still come out ahead in terms of revenue and expenses,” Glick said.

  338. Shoko August 19, 2010 5:12 pm

I don’t think it would be a good move for SMU to change conferences. As it is right now, the WAC is below that of the CSU and they have a much better computer ranking. Man, we’re doomed.

  339. Garret August 19, 2010 5:13 pm

    Shoko,

Things with my company are extremely crazy right now. Some very weird stuff.

Things in Hawaii that have been focused on helping UH may have been destroyed in less than a day.

  340. Shoko August 19, 2010 5:14 pm

Doh, meant conference C-USA rather than CSU.

  341. Garret August 19, 2010 5:16 pm

SMU would never leave for the WAC. C-USA has 3x the TV money and far more basketball revenue. More importantly, they are in a division with Houston, Rice, UTEP, and Oklahoma and Louisiana schools that are easy traveling distance for the team and fans.

C-USA had 3x the TV money and 3x the basketball money than the WAC when the WAC had BSU/Nevada/Fresno…no C-USA team would leave for the WAC.

Remember, even a Sun Belt team (North Texas) turned the WAC down…and that was when the WAC was stronger.

  342. Shoko August 19, 2010 5:19 pm

    Garret,

    Weird as in classified? 🙂

Anyway, I’m sorry to hear of all the work you put in to increase UH has been mired with the recent events that have occured in the WAC.

Keep a chin up, my friend, I really enjoy your post. You, like others are a credit to this blog.

  343. d1島 August 19, 2010 5:19 pm

I mentioned earlier that Fresno’s Pres excluded Hawaii from his list of sites that were problematic travel-wise, listing Las Cruces, Moscow (presumably, Idaho) and Monroe.

    RE: Softball recruits/2011 outlook.

Steve, you may catch a glimpse of them in November when the Rainbow Wahine have their fall games against Chaminade.

It will be EARLY November so stay tuned for the official release of those dates.

For example, last season, I was able to catch a glimpse of Jenna Rodriguez in the pitching circle. So yes you can get an early preview of the team then.

The new recruits coming in are looking to fill or compete for the starting catcher postion and some infield slots remain unknown.

The Rainbow Wahine have to replace four starters in catcher Katie Grimes, 2nd base Traci Yoshikawa, 1st base Amanda Tauali’i, and OF Kanani Pu’u-Warren. Keep in mind all four girls contributed about 40-50 home runs last season.

By my estimation looks like 2011 junior Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu has worked hard to front the 1st base position for next season. As for the other positions, it will be played out in the short fall season and when the team returns for spring camp I guess.

Coach Coolen has said a few months ago he does feel two of the incoming freshman could compete for starting positions.

  346. d1島 August 19, 2010 5:22 pm

    Tickets, tickets, tickets, tickets!

(Would have been more meaningful if they got here before yesterday 🙄 )

  347. Garret August 19, 2010 5:22 pm

    d1shima,

I did notice that Fresno State didn’t complain about the travel to Hawaii…but Nevada did complain so I thought I should point that out.

One big difference between Fresno and Nevada is that Fresno does *not* travel to Hawaii for football this year (no travel to complain about this year) but Nevada does travel to Hawaii. Frankly, I don’t blame Nevada for pointing out that the WAC schedule has their football team playing at Ruston and Hawaii this season.

  348. d1島 August 19, 2010 5:23 pm

Nice touch for UHAD to include a free ticket coupon with the season tix 😉

  349. Garret August 19, 2010 5:24 pm

    d1shima,

I know that *Benson* said that he’s going to send a bill to Fresno and Nevada due right away, but Nevada’s President apparently has a different understanding of the contract. One big thing that she pointed out is that the financial penalty for leaving is supposed to be lower if BYU didn’t join the WAC…that actually makes sense to me and would prove Benson wasn’t telling the full truth of the matter.

  350. d1島 August 19, 2010 5:27 pm

    …this should be interesting.

Also included ( I guess for all season ticket holders) an invitation to attend a pre-game reception on October 16 with a presentation titled, “Outlook of UH Athletics” 😯

File that under: Stuff I wish we could take back.

Too bad, I won’t be able to make that game…

  355. Steve August 19, 2010 5:34 pm

Kazz, thank you for the info. I believe the 2 positions coach was talking about could be catcher and 2nd base. I heard talk last year that Buchanan was an excellent defensive outfielder. Just to let you know, I did attend quite a few games last year. Will be able to attend more if not all this year since now retired. You can find me standing either down the 3rd, or 1st base line. I will be looking for those dates with Chaminade. Does joining the booster club include free parking?

  357. Not an Expert August 19, 2010 5:36 pm

Next move is for BYU to make good on their intent and follow through with what they were going to do. Time to ante up and play call my bluff. With BYU’s commitment in place get a mover and shaker and have Benson as a information consultant to the new commissioner. The MWC has just made some moves but are only good if BYU and TCU stays. If those 2 teams are gone the MWC will be back to square 1 with Boise leading the pack.

Now that BYU is out of the MWC, Fresno & Nevada may want to reconsider their move because there is no guarantee the MWC will be AQ when TCU leaves. Opportunity is right in front of the WAC and in your own yard. USU apparently stayed committed to the WAC knowing how this could make the WAC stronger. Fresno & Nevada wake up USU tried to do something to help the WAC get stronger. It will if you 2 schools stayed put. Maybe they weren’t promised games with BYU and felt hurt. Whatever don’t get swayed by the smooth talking Thompson and save yourselves $5 million each.

If this happens both conferences will continue with little edge to either. Maybe advantage to the WAC now and definetly in 2 years. With BYU wanting 4 games a year with WAC schools that will enhance the television revenues for the league. Also enhancing the other sport programs.

I see it if BYU commits to their plan and the networks helps the WAC, Fresno & Nevada may reconsider knowing the $ numbers involved by this change. If this happens guess what Boise may want to reconsider also and bottom line the WAC will have more negotiating powers than the MWC. BYU helps the WAC the WAC helps BYU. Again BYU call Thompson’s bluff and realize that this move will work for BYU and have faith the original plans will manifest itself with Fresno & Nevada reconsidering.

  358. Kazz August 19, 2010 5:41 pm

    Steve,

Joining the booster club for Rainbow Wahine softball does not include free parking. I’m not saying it’s “impossible”, but we could look into that for the future.

Coordination with the appropriate personel at UH is obviously key.

I believe the parking office is SEPERATE from UH athletics though.

  359. Pomai August 19, 2010 5:44 pm

Steve sorry no free parking as of now, but we do give free season tickets LOL

  360. madeinhawaii August 19, 2010 5:48 pm

Hmm.. if the WAC dissolves in 2011… does that mean this may be our last Sheraton Hawaii Bowl?

  361. Kazz August 19, 2010 5:48 pm

    Steve,

Brynne Buchanan was right behind Majam at the centerfield spot ‘depth chart’ last season and with a few more reps or playing time does look like to be a great defender. She can cover a lot of ground for sure.

At bat, you’d be shocked to see a true lefty slap hitter in the Wahine line-up but that’s what she brought to the table last season. She’s got three more years so plenty more time for her to find her niche on the team.

  362. Kazz August 19, 2010 5:48 pm

  364. Garret August 19, 2010 5:57 pm

    Not an Expert,

I admire your positive spin, but I have to point out a few things. UH cannot let itself have a false of security that things are okay with the WAC.

    1. BYU is *not* going to join the WAC now. With the teams left, they are out. The WCC is a far better basketball conference now.

    2. Utah State is trying to get out of the WAC. That indicates the power balance between the MWC and WAC.

    3. Fresno State and Nevada are not coming back to the WAC. They have openly wanted to get into the MWC and they finally got their wish when the BYU/WAC agreement came to light.

    4. The WAC will go to near zero for TV rights and have no way to generate money. If La Tech leaves also, the WAC will lose its NCAA basketball spot and money even if they add other teams. The rules state that schools must play in the same conference for 5 years, so the WAC cannot just invite replacements and keep their NCAA spot.

  365. Garret August 19, 2010 5:58 pm

Idaho Statesmen seems to indicate that Utah State wants to join the MWC now and may be able get invited again…but they may have blown their chance.

Source at USU told me the door to the MWC is not completely closed to USU, calling it ‘ajar’ but a very complex situation

  366. Da Punchbowl Kid August 19, 2010 6:01 pm

    Shoko, Garret, –

My 337. I sorta knew there were reasons why it would never happen, that was just desperation talkin’! *tsai* 🙁

  367. Garret August 19, 2010 6:02 pm

I’ve seen this rumor everywhere, but now the Orlando Sentinel is reporting it so I’ll pass it along. This report is about how ESPN is trying to put together a massive 20-team superconference for non-AQ schools that would come with a BCS spot! They take teams from C-USA, MWC, and WAC…and ESPN apparently is leaving UH out of the conference.

Two sources with knowledge of the discussions told the Orlando Sentinel on Thursday one of the scenarios being discussed includes a possible merger of 20 teams from the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA, with the champion claiming an automatic BCS bowl bid. However, the sources stated such an agreement is complex, could easily fall apart and is far from being completed.

  368. Garret August 19, 2010 6:03 pm

The 20-team conference is supposed to include these teams:

    BYU

    TCU

    Air Force

    Fresno

    Nevada

    Houston

    SMU

    UTEP

    Tulsa

    Rice

    Boise

    ECU

    USM

    UCF

    Marshall

    Memphis

    Tulane

    UAB

    New Mexico

    La Tech

  369. d1島 August 19, 2010 6:03 pm

…any more good news Garret? 🙄

    j/k (I guess)

  370. Garret August 19, 2010 6:04 pm

    Some other rumored possibilities:

Rather than a 20-team C-USA/MWC, I’m told it may be more likely that C-USA adds two teams to grow to 14. The additions: TCU and Temple.

  371. Garret August 19, 2010 6:05 pm

I’ve seen the La Tech to the Sun Belt other places also.

If WAC breaks up, Louisiana Tech may end up landing in the Sun Belt.

  372. Da Punchbowl Kid August 19, 2010 6:05 pm

    *tsigh*

  373. Garret August 19, 2010 6:05 pm

    BYU note.

If WAC breaks up or gets too weak, BYU may end up sending its hoops program and other sports to the West Coast Conference.

  374. Kazz August 19, 2010 6:06 pm

    Steve,

Iwata has a cannon. She could slide to 3rd or 2nd, with that arm 3rd might be best as opposed to second. Then who plays SS? Gonzalez? Maybe. I think we all haven’t seen enough of Sarah Robinson to really make any assumptions.

I can see Aguirre moving to the right to replace Pu’u-Warren and maybe J-Rod gets another crack at OF on the left side.

Basically, for this team what probably will dictate positions, especially for the incoming freshman looking to start, is who can hit?

  375. d1島 August 19, 2010 6:06 pm

…I *asked* for it! (bangs head on desk, repeats….repeats….)

  376. Garret August 19, 2010 6:07 pm

    d1shima,

So many iterations, some of them supposedly driven by conferences and some of them driven by ESPN. The one constant is that teams at the bottom of the WAC aren’t included.

I’m going to step away from the computer now before I go off on the subject.

  377. d1島 August 19, 2010 6:09 pm

….let me suggest that everyone plan to come to Waipio at the end of August where there is certain to be a welcome celebration of some kind for a successful Hawaii team that plays in a sound organization. 😐

    Question to Karl Benson

(This would have been my question at the teleconference. I feel that this information being leaked is criminal and should be investigated.)

Have you or the WAC looked into how the announcement of BYU leaving the MWC was leaked?

After this information was leaked (by a Colorado twitter account that was reputedly hacked) that’s when MWC countered by going after the WAC teams.

Because this information was leaked it give the MWC valuable time to rob the WAC.

Now supposing no information was leaked and Benson was able to finalize BYU admission to the WAC in all sports except football he would have had valuable time on his side, maybe to the point that he could have had one more face to face (conference call) with his members in informing them that BYU was in and then having them confirm their pledges of their support, allegiance and loyalty.

I don’t know… it just seems to me that whom ever leaked this information started a fire. And they purposely did so to hinder the plans of the WAC and BYU.

  383. d1島 August 19, 2010 6:18 pm

Speaking of the West Region Champs, this from the littleleague.org site:

All 16 teams are now at the Little League International complex, settling into their new temporary home at Dr. Creighton Hale International Grove, where they can escape from the whirlwind of activity over the next 12 days.

The time between arrival and the first games on Friday is filled with excitement. There’s uniform fittings, photo sessions, meeting with ESPN, video games, ping pong, and of course, baseball practice. Each team is given a half-hour to practice on the two stadium surfaces, but they can get all the workouts needed at Little League International’s six indoor batting cages and numerous practice fields.

ESPN’s SportNation pole question: What would be the best move for BYU?

Remain in MWC for all sports :46 %

Independent in fb/play other sports in WAC :26 %

Join WAC in all sports including fb :28 %

    Total votes :40,195

The kicker is….in the state of Utah the numbers are…

Remain in MWC in all sports :42 %

Independent in fb/play other sports in WAC :54 %

Join WAC in all sports including fb : 4 %

    Total votes :3,593

Not alot of votes out of Utah but something is afoot there…

And…good evening to all Warrior, Rainbow Warrior and Wahine fans.

  393. puuloke August 19, 2010 7:01 pm

Now we scramble, get to see who are friends really are, and decide if big time football is really for Hawaii. My suggestion:

    1. go independent,

    2. get an airline to underwrite the costs of flying from West Coast to Hawaii and back,

    3. get a hotel chain to underwrite housing costs,

    4. get a restaurant/caterer to underwrite food costs,

    5. give any underwriting supporter a significant tax break, free advertising, etc

    6. special travel packages for supporters (heck, make like Little League use to do and develop host families).

Actually we need to assess the impediments to fielding a competitive independent, and think outside the box for solutions – and do it pretty damn quick!!!!!

  394. Steve August 19, 2010 7:05 pm

    Puuloke,

Answer #2: Hawaiian Airlines (if UH belongs to Big West or WCC)

Answer #3: Sheraton and Outrigger, both UH Sponsors.

  395. aka El Padrino August 19, 2010 7:24 pm

I mvolunteer to pick up Fumbler #2 Benson ayt the airport for the uSC game. Where do I take him??

If UH decides to go independent in football and go to another conference for all other sports, maybe UH can entice the WCC (or BWC) by reducing travel costs to Hawaii but having teams come over every other year in basketball, volleyball, and any other sport where there are single games. Instead of having home-and-home every year, do like the MPSF does with UH in volleyball – play 2 games at UH, then the next year, 2 games at the other school.

    Just a thought.

    Garret & JD,

UH is like the person at a dance that nobody wants to dance with according to the information you have uncovered. Hopefully there is a glimmer of hope somewhere in all of this. JD you need to contact Garret and have him help you & UH devise a plan. JD also needs to get the movers and shakers with deep pocket to back UH. This is dire times and I think Garret knows the writing on the wall and the bumpy road up ahead for UH. However with his insights he can help assist this dilema UH is in to be only a nightmare.

  399. Kazz August 19, 2010 7:47 pm

    Ballpicker,

Seems like we’ve got a recorded tally of what Utah residents think will happen to the WAC.

Amazing that MORE people polled in Utah think that BYU football is better as an independent and sending the other sports to the WAC than remaining as is in the MWC.

Hmmmm.. why do I think Utes’ fans heavily bomb-barded this poll?

  400. A-House August 19, 2010 7:47 pm

With all the spin about travel to Hawaii, especially $$$, I have yet to see anything in writing about the near or actual cost for a football team to travel to Hawaii from the West Coast. For Nevada, the travel time sucks because flights into/out of Reno have long (3-4 hours) in San Francisco. So, UH is to blame?

Here’s my take: max of 60 football players and 15-17 coaches, trainers, and medical staff.

    say $500 round trip per person – that would be $38,500 ( $500 x 77 ). Hotel is $5,850 ( $150 x 40 rooms ) – double occupancy, baby!

Thus, it may cost $44,350 for air and hotel.

If a school does play an extra home game, would they “net” less than $45,000? This is for every year travel to Hawaii. Now, that would be $22,500 every two(2) years. Are the schools telling us that they make or net less than $22,500 for every home game?

For teams traveling from further East, the cost would be a little higher, but not a significant amount of $$$.

If a school charters a plane, they could “add” boosters to the flight to make it full. If Hawaiian Air is the charter, and if Hawaiian is willing to grant a 25% discount on fare as a “donation” to UH, cost would be even less. This can hold true for any major airline flying into Hawaii.

Any one out there go got better figures? Am I so off base?

  401. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 7:55 pm

    A-House:

The numbers are fine for football.

But put that down for swimming and diving, and volleyball, and soccer, and softball ….

  402. Garret August 19, 2010 7:57 pm

Interesting stuff from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Late Thursday night, a source close to the situation said that representatives from the Mountain West and another league — believed to be Conference USA — met in Colorado to discuss a plan to match the two conferences’ champions in a title game, with the winner gaining an automatic BCS berth.

“You’re on the right track,” said the source. “The lawyers have told them [the BCS] that it’s time to give someone else a chance.”

  403. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 7:57 pm

Benson represents the WAC and JD represents UH.

It’s easy to say they’re not wanted than to say the WAC and UH are not wanted.

In this whole scenario, Hawaii was rejected. That sorta hurts.

  404. Ipu Man August 19, 2010 7:58 pm

    Anybody remember that old cartoon

    showing an atomic mushroom cloud

off in the distance with a putting green

and several golfers in the foreground…

    with the caption:

“go ahead and put out…the shock wave

    won’t hit us for another 30 seconds”?…

  405. Garret August 19, 2010 7:58 pm

The MWC would not need to go to 12 teams because they would not have a title game…their champion would play the C-USA champion in a game for a BCS spot.

But there would be scheduling crossovers between the two leagues in some sports.

The marquee part of the agreement would be the football championship game.

An 11-team Mountain West Conference could be unwieldy. Teams won’t be eager to play 10 conference games.

But if the ultimate prize is a berth in the title game with the Conference USA champion, they don’t need to play all of the other teams every season. Nor would it be really necessary for the MWC to add a 12th team and play a league championship game.

  406. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 8:00 pm

JJ told me he heard about that merger of the MWC and Conference USA to form three divisions. The three winners and a wildcard would then have a four-team playoff.

    Sounds intriguing, no?

  407. Garret August 19, 2010 8:01 pm

BYU needs to schedule good games to make it as an independent, and it looks like they are getting 3 games with Texas.

The University of Texas and Brigham Young University are very close to announcing a three-game football series starting with a game at Royal-Memorial Stadium next season, a source familiar with the negotiations told the American-Statesman on Thursday.

BYU, which could play football as an independent, is interested in scheduling high-profile games, the source said.

JJ told me he heard about that merger of the MWC and Conference USA to form three divisions. The three winners and a wildcard would then have a four-team playoff.

That is interesting…kind of a mini-playoff for non-AQ teams. That could get a decent TV deal and build interest. It is just too bad that UH and the WAC is being left out.

  411. Kazz August 19, 2010 8:06 pm

I keep telling myself that if we were FSU and UNR we’d do the same.

But I saw a piece of a Pat Hill interview on Hawaii News Now and I wanted to put my fist through the TV.

  412. Garret August 19, 2010 8:10 pm

    Kazz,

UH would have taken the offer in less than a second. No loyalty clause or exit fee would have stopped UH.

Football is a game when 22 physically fit, strong players run around like crazy for two hours while we who really need the exercise sit in and watch them…

  414. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 8:12 pm

    Garret:

Yep, I know. It’s sort of the response that everybody wants a playoff except the BCS. So, why not create a playoff. It certainly would be more interesting than separate bowls or even some of the BCS games.

A few years ago, Fitz Hill (then with San Jose State) suggested a playoff among non-BCS teams. I guess that would create a sub-BCS level, but, hey, why not?

  415. Ipu Man August 19, 2010 8:12 pm

let’s make football more entertaining and give the quarterback something else to think about. Let’s arm each middle linebacker with a coconut custard pie.

  418. Hank August 19, 2010 8:18 pm

….call me crazy (or stupid), but i’d much rather go independent or remain with a wac filled with programs like USU than join the mwc…there’s bad karma over there, and after byu utah and tcu leaves…the mwc will be trapped in mediocrity for decades…haunted by the knowledge of others that their relationships were conceived through a history of lies, mistrust, and greed.

…after four years of waiting, it is clear why the BCS never gave these back room slimy perverts acceptance…stephen, in time, i believe that it will be a blessing that we were never invited…

    …i’ll say no more…except – Go Warriors!

  419. Steve August 19, 2010 8:21 pm

ST, what do you think an airline would do if football was not included, but the other sports were? Referring to #403

  420. SteveM August 19, 2010 8:24 pm

  421. Steve August 19, 2010 8:25 pm

I like A-House’s idea, excluding football. If you just insert the other sports which has less athletes, it could make sense, and be viable for an airline.

A doctor at a crazy hospital decided to take his nutty patients

    to a football game.

For weeks in advance, he coached his patients to respond to his commands.

When the day of the game arrived, everything seemed to be going well. As the National Anthem started…….the doctor yelled, “Up Nuts” And the patients complied by standing up.

After the anthem …he yelled, “Down Nuts”. And they all sat back down in their seats.

And when a touchdown was made, the doctor yelled, “Cheer Nuts”. They all broke out into applause and cheered.

When the referee made a particularly bad call against the star of the home team, the Doctor yelled, “Booooo Nuts!!!” and they all started booing and cat calling.

Thinking things were going very well. The doctor decided to go get a beer and a hot dog, leaving his assistant in charge.

When he returned, there was a riot in progress. Finding his assistant, the doctor asked,” What in the world happened? ”

The assistant replied, “Well, everything was going just fine till a vendor passed by and yelled PEANUTS!”

Mama and Papa Bear are accused of child abuse. Baby Bear is put on the stand to testify and is asked by the judge, “Do you want to live with Papa Bear?”

“No,” Baby Bear replies, “he beats me.”

Then the judge asks, “Do you want to live with Mama Bear?”

“No,” Baby Bear replies, “she beats me too.”

So the Judge says, “Who do you want to live with then?”

Baby Bear replies, “I want to live with the Chicago Bears,

    they don’t beat anybody.”

  424. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 19, 2010 8:32 pm

I have a hard time blaming Benson for all of this. I mean what bargaining chip does the guy really have?

As for JD, I hope no one blames him for the position we are in and not being proactive. Again, what bargaining chip does Hawaii have in football realistically?

I am afraid that for the most part these guys can only take a wait and see approach.

No matter who is in charge I can imagine pretty much the same outcome.

You give Tiger Woods a yard stick and tell him to play against Phil with a full set of clubs….I mean being good at what you do can only take you so far, sometimes you gotta have the right tools.

I think a lot of the suggestions are great … for UH.

Not sure what’s in it for the Big West or WCC or MWC.

Sometimes you just have to say: This sucks.

  428. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 8:42 pm

I like Ipu’s suggestions the best.

    Laughter is the best remedy.

Sports is an important part of life. Hey, it’s my livelihood. And this hurts. And maybe it will be resolved and maybe it won’t. But at the end of the day, we get to live in the greatest place with the greatest people.

    Is that rationalizing? Of course.

    Denial? You bet.

But when I rationalize and deny, I sleep better at night.

Now Benson and JD … they can stay up and worry.

  429. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 19, 2010 8:43 pm

    Stephen,

In your opinion how does the future of Hawaii football, going to a bowl game, staying at the D-1 level look right now?

  430. Shoko August 19, 2010 8:45 pm

    Haha@Chicago Bears.

  431. Shoko August 19, 2010 8:47 pm

Now worries, ST. Your humor, as well as others, is what draws me to this blog. If I didn’t have a sense of humour, I would kill myself.

  432. SteveM August 19, 2010 8:52 pm

ST — yeah, I don’t know. I’m still disturbed that I had to pay the bag fee on each flight segment last year. I think in the travel industry, there are still mass discounts around a year out….deals with cruise lines who board and disembark 2,000-5,000 people per week. Major ports have major airports. But I’m not a travel agent.

  433. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 9:01 pm

    Iwonderwhy:

    Right now, it’s bleak.

Can’t spin it any other way.

What happened yesterday was even worse than the great exodus of 1999, and that included the MWC running off with the TV contract meant for the 16-team WAC.

But hopeless? Nah. This can be fixed.

First, the WAC and UH have to stop trying to analyze what went wrong. When I was at The Advertiser and we got scooped on a story, the first thing was an editor would ask: How did they get the story? I’m like, why does that matter? They got it, now we need to find a way to advance the story. Get more details, do follow-ups, etc.

The WAC has to secure the members it already has. Then it has to send out mass invitations. Montana, Sacramento State, UC Davis, even some of the MWC schools. Some of them aren’t Division I-A schools? So what? Now they can start working on it if they want in. Schools have better situations with their conferences? Hey, the worst shot is the one not taken. Apparently Fresno State and Nevada missed the deadline, so they have another two years in the league. That’s enough time to turn over every rock. I mean, what are the alternatives? Extinction?

  434. chawan_cut August 19, 2010 9:03 pm

is the scrimmage still scheduled for Saturday?

  435. Steve August 19, 2010 9:08 pm

The real sad part about all of this, the late great Stan Sheriff must be rolling in his grave, seeing Hawaii being stepped on again, something he would diffinitely not allow to happen. He would have been proactive like he always was, not laid back and let people just step and kick around Hawaii.

  436. SteveM August 19, 2010 9:15 pm

ST — with two years to reload the WAC again, can we field a D-1A conference? I agree, we have to do whatever to build and help ourselves first, rather than hope other will try and help us. Basic survival.

  437. RedZone August 19, 2010 9:19 pm

I agree with ST. Just win. Especially on the road.

  438. bb August 19, 2010 9:19 pm

When they do that Sheraton Hawaii Bowl I hope the bowl people have some balls and make sure that Fresno, Nevada, or Boise get the trip to Hawaii.

  439. bb August 19, 2010 9:19 pm

    “dont” get the trip….

    my bad

  440. LizKauai (iPad) August 19, 2010 9:21 pm

    http://tfdssports.com/2010-articles/august/camp-day-19-zach-miller-firewroks-roster-shuffle.html

“After having issues with receiving, defensive end turned fullback Alex Daniels caught a pass in the end zone from Colt Brennan to close practice. Head coach Tom Cable has already said that he expects Daniels to play in Chicago when the Raiders face the Bears.

The tea leaves say that Colt Brennan will likely get some field time on Saturday against da Bears. With Frye on the shelf for the season and Gradkowski getting limited practice reps during the week, Brennan should be the third quarterback again. Colt has now had some time to study the playbook, and it would not make sense to again only use two quarterbacks.”

  441. Ralph August 19, 2010 9:35 pm

I say let’s merge the WAC with the Big West plus BYU for all other sports and follow the Big East set up. Stipulate that Cal Poly and UC Davis upgrade to D1 status, subsidize the two fb programs for 5 years on their away games even if it puts a financial burden on the home team, and help them upgrade their stadiums to increase their revenue flow by giving them a larger percentage of tv money for 5 years to help them get off their feet to succeed. Without them, or 2 other teams the WAC folds, worst case then paying a subsidy for 5 years. The Big West offers a lot of the women sports, including water polo, soccer, wbb, track, etc, and the men offer baseball and basketball, along with some non revenue sports to make it workable.

  442. Ralph August 19, 2010 9:36 pm

If the WAC and Big West merges, I’m sure BYU will go independent and join the merger. Then we get to play BYU every year.

  443. HawaiiMongoose August 19, 2010 9:54 pm

Ralph, I like your idea. The league would have 16 teams for non-football sports, allowing for two 8-team divisions. The travel expense would be tough on LaTech, but no worse than it has been in the WAC.

  444. LizKauai (iPad) August 19, 2010 9:56 pm

Meanwhile back at the ranch, seems like the Warrior WR’s are feeling cheated out of a talent show win. Anyone see this?

  445. Bigislandkurt August 19, 2010 10:22 pm

There is no good way to spin this.

    It sucks.

I hope it’s one of those fairy tale stories where the poor, dejected protagonist finally gets the better of the situation. Maybe BYU follows through and brings a few friends over. I don’t know what to think at this point.

    F***.

    BIK

  446. madeinhawaii August 19, 2010 10:24 pm

My biggest concern is how the players are taking this… grayshirts, redshirts, freshman, and sophmore … are just starting their Warrior journey in the WAC… and now all that uncertainty… recruiting… how will that be affected? Will they be on a winning team in two years? three? Will there even be a team in four?

Obviously, they need reassurances and they will need it soon.

  447. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 19, 2010 10:28 pm

  448. Ralph August 19, 2010 10:32 pm

MIH UH has zero announced verbal commits for 2011, now with the fallout will UH be able to secure any commitments, its going to be a tough sell without knowing if the WAC will be around in 2 years or after 2012 when FSU and Nevada leaves for the MWC

  449. Slugger August 19, 2010 10:34 pm

    LizK???

ST’s video ad is what the Warrior WR’s are watching?

  450. papajoe2 August 19, 2010 10:42 pm

On tonight’s news with Kanoa and Kekaula, it sounds like JD hinting that we may go independent. If so, do we still have to pay the $5 million exit fee? What if we only go independent in football but stay in the WAC in all other sports, do we still pay the $5 mil? How are we going to get the money if we leave?

  451. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 11:07 pm

Not sure how the players are taking this because media relations director Derek Inouchi said today that the student-athletes are not allowed to be asked about the WAC situation.

I think UH has a problem with crisis management.

  452. LizKauai (iPad) August 19, 2010 11:09 pm

Slugger- sounds like a team talent show. Check out Salas on fb.

    Ok time for nigh nigh.

    I BELEIVE!

    All will be well.

  453. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 11:19 pm

Going independent works if you have a national TV contract.

If UH gets that, then what happens to pay-per-view?

In the past TV stations always wanted to bid separately on UH football. But UH insisted it was better for the school to lump all sports into one package.

If, say, there’s a national deal for only UH football, who’s going to bid on, say, UH softball games? Yes, we all love UH softball, but how much advertising money can you make on a sport that doesn’t even charge admission?

  454. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2010 11:20 pm

Uh, I really don’t think a player’s facebook comments should be publicized on a public blog.

  455. SteveM August 19, 2010 11:30 pm

Long day. Here’s the song from my UH student days that comes to mind right now…

  456. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 19, 2010 11:56 pm

    Stephen,

Do you think we have the draw for a national TV contract for football?

  457. RGV Pony August 20, 2010 11:50 am

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned, but to me, an outside observer looking in, it would make sense for UH to go independent in football and have the other sports compete in the WCC. I could see ESPN jumping on the chance to put something on the air between the late afternoon mainland game and College Gameday Final, which UH games would fit nicely into. ESPN $ to offset travel costs, plus the additional game caveat, play 8 or 9 home games a year, automatic to the Hawaii Bowl with six wins…where’s the downside?

  458. madder August 21, 2010 6:02 pm

Nice comments here. Better than on most fan sites, I think.

I have an idea: When everyone has the time, why not write a note to Larry Price c/o his radio station and ask him to please use his never-to-be-denied appeal to force interviews with our candidates for the Governor, the UH AD Donovan and the UH Chancellor herself to see what (if anything) they’re thinking as far as UH (independent?) Football.

If anyone can get answers or non-answers, he can. I’ve encountered Mr. Price before and to this day, very few people have impressed me (or intimidated me; he was a BIGGGGGG dude at the time)

more with his honesty, wit and vision. And I’m not easily impressed.

In fact, I have a better idea: Write, call or email your friends and ask them to do the same – and encourage them to start a DRAFT of Larry Price and Dick Tomey to step in as special Warrior representatives to oversee a fast-paced committee to see what can be done. Both of these men acting together would be hard to ignore and could easily bring Hawaii’s politicians, tourist industry and media communities together in order find out if it’s possible to get things done.

Because, otherwise, I have a strong feeling that Hawaii and the UH Warriors are going to sit on their hands until it’s too late.
