Saturday ramblings
A few notes:
• Matagisila Lefiti, who was projected to be the No. 1 center, said he might miss the first three games while recovering from surgery on his left foot. He said he suffered the injury when a teammate “rolled” onto his foot during the spring game. He underwent surgery in mid-May, and was told the rehabilitation period was about four months. “I should be ready mid-September,” Lefiti said.
He said there are pins in his left foot to stabilize the torn ligaments.
“I was very frustrated when the doctor told me what he told me,” Lefiti said. “I had to really focus. It made me a stronger player mentally, and really got me going spiritually, also.”
Lefiti acknowledged it was a freak injury. He was wearing an ankle brace at the time. “It wasn’t like I was trying to cut corners,” Lefiti said.
He still uses a medical boot, but no longer needs crutches. He keeps fit doing core exercises.
• Defensive end Veni Manu, who signed a letter of intent with the Warriors in February 2009, still is awaiting final clearance from UH.
Manu did not play in 2009 while working to meet NCAA eligibility requirements. He apparently met those requirements, but now has to wait for Upper Campus officials to certify his eligibility. He should be cleared in time to participate in training camp.
Manu also is working to regain the weight he lost. He weighed 240 pounds when he signed with UH. Because he did not have access to a weight-training facility for several months, he lost 35 pounds. He has gained five pounds the past month, and now weighs 210.
• Defensive end Kamalu Umu has been impressive during offseason workouts. Umu sat out last season after transferring from Charleston Southern. He only has one season of eligibility remaining.
• Tombo Ahi provides us with this link to Chad Owens’ 117-yard kickoff return: Mighty Mouse.
• Avis has selected Slugger as the winner of a $25 RainBowTique gift certificate.
• Happy birthday to Hoohiki.
Dare I say it: First
Congrats Slugger.

Good Morning Tsai-kos!
Congrats Slugger!
Happy Birthday Hoohiki!
Tombo Ahi,
luv dat youtube on Chad Owens……..I presume the NFL has scouts/reps watching and looking for players to compliment their rosters?
Hmmmm?,…”bad-luck injuries?????”…….wonder if there’s, “goodluck-injuries”?
Regarding Kamalu Umu. Has there been anyone from Hawaii that has traveled so far to play college football?
Good Morning Tsaikos! Hope everyone has a good weekend. Congrats Slugger! Happy Birthday Hoohiki!
Thanks TomboAhi!
Awesome Chad Owens!
nice video of Chad. That last move he made was so flawless….all in full stride!
Tombo,
mahalo for the vid!!!
woo-hoo, Chad!!! way to go!!!
The Mighty Mouse that roars.
Aloha Tsaikos….Guud morning!
Wet and cool this morn….praying for some sun..
Kind of late on this but been following some of the haps with the Lebron thing and that Cav’s owner is some piece of work…lots of smack…stating the Cav’s will get to be championship category team before the Heat?…what da heck has he been doing for the last 7 years when he had Lebron to build a team on? Now Lebron gone…(could be the start of a song yeah)..he thinks he will buld a championship team?…..sorry bruddah…da bus wen go already…Lebron made that donkey a ton of money and now he talking smack about him? Loyalty?…didn’t the franchise move from Michigan a while back????..no loyaty to the fans ovea deya….
This is a business before it is a sport..Lebron made a great decision to put himself in position to try and win a championship…I will be watching the Heat next season to see if they can gel and get that championship…all pau nau…
Chad has to be close to setting some kind of record with career 100 yard returns.
wow! da sun comming up now…..time to get busy…
tombo ahi is awesome.
Congrats Slugger!
Morning da world!
Congrats Slugger, did I ever tell you that you are the nicest person(xmas stay coming up ya know). LOL
Seems like Chad was just here a few weeks ago conducting football clinics. Didn’t take long for him to catch his rythym.
Congrats Slugger, I take a 2xl shirt or jacket and a 5xl speedo. Hahahaha.
ST
Is Lefiti or UHADept collecting his medical records and news articles for possible medical redshirt if he doesn’t heal properly or require additional time that he misses the upcoming season?
Slugger, you lose money. Gotta buy sooooo many people gifteseses cause you won a $25 gift certificate. Have a nice day.
#30 702 W/F, yea, I wouldn’t take chances as you never know. Lefiti, don’t just leave it up to UH’s decision for the paper work as they are short staffed and may miss some or all of the paper work needed, just in case. Good luck to you, Matagisila, and God speed on your recovery.
#22 NSF, Ditto! Somebody very dear to me knows Lebron and said he is a great human being and a wonderful person. It’s a business and the owner had his chances with him. Picked up a “past his prime” Shaq but nothing that could take them over the top. Things get stale after a while. Greener pastures for both? Only time will tell. The move pau already. Both need to move on.
I’m sorta curious about the claim that LeBron wanted to play with his good friends. Uh, Wade and Bosh didn’t grow up in Akron. Seems it was just three superstars deciding to find a surrogate team. Welcome to Miami.
Good Morning Gangeez!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Thanks much Tombo! Its great to wake up to see Chad Owens’ runback. After his runback last week, I predicted that the Mighy Mouse would run amuck on the CFL’s bigger fields.
If there aren’t any NFL teams smart enough to pick Chad up, I think he’ll be a superstar in the CFL.
We were making analogies between JJ and LeBron and NSF’s #22 is a great one too. The Fumbler had the best possible coach in JJ, but refused to make it worth it for JJ to stay.
Good morning!
Happy birthday, Ho’ohiki!
Thanks for picking me, Avis! Thanks to Stretch & ST for the gift card! papajoe2, I don’t think the Rainbowtique has Speedos…
My final take:
it’s OK for LeBron to leave because of a business decision. But he can’t be surprised if there’s a backlash against his “brand.” It’s business. Marketing is all about image. At least this will put an end to the silly notion that great athletic skill equates to great character. We’re all human. We all have flaws. He should be celebrated for his basketball skills, not his loyalty.
Off to the Farmer’s Market & then niece’s grad party.
ST ~ I’ll call ya.
Esme & out…

Here’s Chad Owens’ 117-yard return for TD from yesterday’s Argonauts game… “
I think JJ’s situation is different from LeBron’s because JJ gave up money and the NFL to come to Hawaii. And for the first four years at UH he was underpaid. Not sure what LeBron gave up — Hummer? — to go from high school to the NBA.
By the way, I’m just ragging on LeBron because I’m a Knicks fan and I’m still irked that Pat Riley ditched them to go to the Heat several years ago.
If LeBron signed with the Knicks, I would be, like: Hey, he gave his best years to the Cavs. Time to move on.
At least Im an honest hypocrite.
Gratz, Slugger!
Happy birthday, Hoohiki!
Hope you heal good and quick, Lefiti!

ST: One or more national talk show hosts mentioned that the 3 might have “planned” on this during the Olympics. All 3 signed contracts that expired at the same time. Coincidence?
good saturday morning tsaiko country

Great morning everyone!
Congratulations Slugger!

Arrrrrgh, well shiver me timbers! Koakane is awake. That would be correct. I would be the pirate.

Congrats to Slugger, Happy Birthday to Hoohiki, and a good morning to the Tsaikos.
And now it is time to ramble into town.
Good Morning All!
Good morning everyone!
Happy Birthday Hoohiki !!!

TOMBO-AHI:
Thanks – go CHAD!
Good morning all!
Tombo,
Thanks for the ‘Chad link.’ If he continues like that, he will be returning in the NFL again.
Is the Blog Bash still on? If so when again?
Tombo Ahi,
Thanks for the link. Some people were saying on another board that Chad had lost a step. Doesn’t look like it in that video. His TD last game was all heart after he stiff armed the last guy and willed his way into the end zone. This new one was all speed. One little juke and he turned on the jets.
#30… absolutely right! Better safe than sorry!
Great to see the video of Chad Owens doing what he does so much better than others. The team that Chad is on had ZERO TDs all of last season on special teams and now Chad has special teams TDs in both of their games this season!
Bad news about Lefiti. If his injury is considered minor and he can return after the 3rd game, he won’t be eligible for a medical year anyway…so hopefully he returns in good health as soon as possible.
The cfn review of UH posted yesterday was pretty well researched…in fact, it was a little generous towards UH. They brought up the 3rd quarter stat by saying:
Hawaii third quarter scoring: 26
However, the article doesn’t mention that 10 of those points were scored against the D-IAA team that UH played. So, if you only count D-IA teams:
Hawaii first quarter scoring: 100
Hawaii third quarter scoring: 16
Hawaii opponent 3Q scoring: 93
This was *not* just a problem in 2009. This also hurt UH in games in 2008. Remember, I tracked this stat last season and this was the trend for UH:
2006: +106
2007: +14
2008: -56
2009: -77 (93-16 over 12 games)
Chad is doing great in Canada and hopefully, he gets another shot in the NFL. Only thing that may hold him back from the NFL is, its hard to shake that reputation of fumbling. Former Rainbow (at that time) Gary Allen also fumbled some at very inopportune times in the NFL and went to Canada to do well. I think he led the league in rushing for at least 2 years but can’t remember for sure. Chad should keep on doing the best he can in the CFL, and if the NFL calls then, take advantage of the opportunity. The NFL loses a lot of return men to injury during the season so may need a replacement for a quick fix. Good luck Chad! I watched all of his UH games on TV/PPV and finally saw him live in the Aloha Bowl. I told my brother it would be my dream to see him break a return for a TD in person. BINGO!! TD, OWENS!
Recap of the game from the CFL’s official site has a nice quote from the head coach of Chad’s team that credits Chad for a big part in their win.
*In response to a message yesterday*
Curt,
The Colt helmet was a real deal “game-ready” Schutt Air Pro helmet affixed with the actual decals and the exact type of green UH uses.
Got it from prideofhawaiisports.com. The thing was, the size of the helmet was a “medium” and I think Colt wore/wears a large.
I WANT TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP!!!
(yes I know the contest is over and CONGRATS TO SLUGGER, but I’m just generally speaking 😉 )
Article from the Toronto Sun includes a quote from Chad–it sure sounds like he’s having fun.
Tombo Ahi — thanks for video link!
me too Kazz!
We UH fans are lucky that we have someone as dedicated and relentless as WassupDoc on UH’s side. She will never get credit for all this work that she is doing for free, but she sure is showing her support of UH with her actions.
One of the things that bothered me about the Warriors coaching staff was the lack of scoring in the 3rd quarter. While being a successful coach in another sport (not college), we usually make adjustments at half time with the coaches talking to each other during the game in the 1st half, finding weaknesses and tendencies of the other team. Then they get together breifly at halftime to come up with a game plan for the second half. Except for the D1AA game, I think we may have tied one team and been out scored by all the other teams in the 3rd quarter. Maybe the coaches were not communicating with each other. Maybe some coaches has big egos and cannot be told anything. Maybe the coaches were stubborn and insist they can do it without adjustments or even think they can do it “their” way. Maybe the players couldn’t be coached (bad attitude) to follow the coaches plan. I don’t know what the “inside” reason was, but to be outscored in just about every game in the 3rd quarter, to me, lies 95% with the coaching staff. Hopefully, this year, things will be different. Also, the Warriors was DEAD LAST in the nation in scoring in the red zone and horrendous (maybe last too) in converting on 4th down. I wonder what their 3rd conversions were in comparison to the nation.
With the exception of the Navy game, it was a season where there were two different games for every single game being played.
A few times they came out of the half performing team warm ups and stretches and it looked like an attempt to address the second half “lull”.
It will be interesting to see what Tommy Heffernan will have in store if any in this circumstance.
I’m not saying it’s necessary, but if they had a different energy coming out of the halfs last season, then we’d be looking back at a much different team in 2009.
Calvin,
Blog Bash pushed back a bit.
Thanks Kazz…any idea when or is that “TBD.” Any other Tsaiko gatherings before September 2nd?
The Chad Owens link started me on a journey of watching other Chad Owen highlights and then the 2001 Hawaii – BYU game, then the 1992 Hawaii – BYU game… Thanks Tombo… now I am behind on my chores
UH’s Kara Nishimura said to remind people that today is the deadline to vote for the ESPY’s:
http://espn.go.com/espys/#/home
Congrats to bruddah Chad, keep on doing what you do best, there are people in the NFL noticing and soon they will be ringing the telephones to bring you back to the league.
I suppose I should sneak in a mention that JMxxxx kicked butt in bowling last night.
And that her daughter Carmen came through with two 100-plus games to help us beat Devon, Aaron and Jazz.
Don’t know about anybody else, but I’m starting to get a little football fever. I’m actually scribbling depth charts and notes around the house.
It might be time to start busting out the football DVDs.
In one of the articles posted above, Chad Owens stated that he now feels NO pressure and therefore can play extremely well in the CFL.
Maybe, he should remain in the CFL, because he wasn’t as lucky in the NFL. What do you guys think?
ST…I have had the fever for quite some time too
gigi…
Problem is… the CFL doesn’t pay all that much. So if he has a shot at the NFL, he’ll probably have to take the leap and give it one last try. Especially if he wants to return to Hawaii and buy a house.
Speaking of football DVDs. I watched the 2008 Sugar Bowl again. Sad to say, we lost (again). 🙁
Shoko…why did you do that to yourself?
MIH,
Good point. But, did you know the Canadian dollar almost equals the U.S. dollar? Don’t know how high the cost of living is in Canada, but it probably isn’t as high as in Hawaii.
My point is, Chad is happy right now. Stay that way, Chad! Enjoy football!!!
Calvin,
Glutton for punishment, I guess. 😉
Garret.
Did we give up more yards in the 3rd quarter than in other quarters during the last two seasons?
ST
What was the saying for the magical 2007 season? Was it BELIEVE or WE BELIEVE? Maybe this year could be BELIEVE AGAIN or WE BELIEVE AGAIN after they upset USC.
gigi, The NFL pays a whole lot more than the CFL. If they call, Chad has to answer.
Earlier, Paka mentioned that when he watched video highlights, he noticed that Moniz lacked arm strength, but definitely made plays.
What does that mean? Does that mean, Moniz’s arm will get tired in the 2nd half and will need to be replaced by another QB?
Did someone say “I NO BELIEVE”?
Good morning Tsai-kos!
Congrats Slugger!
Happy Birthday Hoohiki!
GO CHAD!
Let’s be specific… I want to win a _____ championship
conference: all sports
NCAA: volleyball, baseball, softball, water polo, tennis, track (individual), swimming/diving (individual), cheer, sailing
😀 😀 😀 😀
I’m ready for football.
Stayed up till 2am watching last year UH-WSU in Seattle
Oldie did an overlay of the soundtrack so I can hear
the original telecast and switch to Bobby Curran’s call.
Thanks Oldie
No arm strength means he has no zip on the ball to get it there immediately or on his longer throws, the ball just hangs in the air allowing the defensive backs time to make a play. Or he cannot make longer passes as he cannot reach the receiver. What if someone is open deep down the field for an almost sure touchdown but QB couldn’t reach him or the pass floated to the receiver thus allowing the DB to make an interception or deflection or tackle the receiver.
papajoe,
Then, that’s terrible! Why is Moniz even being considered for the top spot???
A really great blog thanks for the post.
gigi-
Moniz didn’t have arm strength partly because he didn’t get the reps prior to the season. He suffered arm fatigue early on in mid-season but played through it. Hopefully with off season conditioning he’s increased his stamina and strength there. But having missed spring practice may have hurt him a bit. We shall see. The Warriors will obviously need the deep pass to turn the third quarter stats around.
All I can say is, BRING BACK COLT!!! I think we really took him for granted. Since he left, no QB at UH can match him.
It was more than just Colt. It was the dreads, too.
100!
Wafan,
Fortunately, we have Salas. Don’t you think he’s just as good as Bess?
Arm fatigue… I think that affected Rausch, too. So Alexander went in instead of Rausch…
Gigi,
As good, if not, better grow some dreads. Although I would think it would affect the aerodynamic flow.
madeinhawaii,
The boxscores do not give the yardage breakdown per quarter, so I have no idea how to gather the information that you asked for. Plus, I do *not* care about yardage, I care about points. If the Warrior D bends a little and lets a team move the ball to the 40 and then stops them, or if a turnover leads to a score, information like that does not show up in yardage but it does show up in points.
At the end of the game, nobody cares if a team gains 300 yards or more than its opponent. All that matters is which team scores more points.
Fathead.com, an online retailer owned by Cavs owner Dan Gilbert dropped the price of its LeBron Fathead wall decals from $99.99 to $17.41, which happens to be the same year Revolutionary War traitor Benedict Arnold was born.
Calvin,
As far as the blog bash goes, I believe the plan was in 2011.
Chopsueyboy,
HILARIOUS!!! hahaha
Garret,
I was just wondering if it was directly attributable to fatigue on the part of the Defense as well as the Offense. If so, hopefully the new S&C will have addressed that.
Garret,
Couldn’t you use the play-by-play and use a calculator?
Shoko…
LOL, too much work to ask of Garret… he does so much for us fans already.
Chad Owens……hana hou….. great job.
GO WARRIORS
I saw this posted elsewhere and think this type of stat is one reason why the WAC doesn’t get much respect. This study analyzed the records of every D-IA team against teams that ended the 2000 to 2009 seasons ranked in the top 25. The WAC did extremely poorly over the previous 10 seasons, much worse than I expected…I thought that UH had done much better against teams that ended the season in the top 25.
Utah State: 0-22
Idaho: 0-16
Nevada: 0-16
NMSU: 0-15
La Tech: 1-20
UH: 1-19
SJSU: 1-17
Fresno St.: 2-17
BSU: 8-7
madeinhawaii,
Fatigue normally shows up in the *4th* quarter, not in the 3rd quarter. Halftime gives the players some time to rest and recover. And it isn’t like UH was playing against teams much deeper than it–teams like Utah State, SJSU, and NMSU aren’t exactly power teams that have a lot more depth than UH.
Blaming fatigue for the 3rd quarter is something I cannot buy. I agree with Kazz and hope that something different is done with the way that the team gears up for the second half. More importantly, UH has to win the adjustment battle at halftime.
Fatigue is also something that is hard to make an excuse for when UH would consistently win the 2nd and 4th quarters and lose big in the 3rd quarter. So, the players got tired just in the 3rd quarter?
What I got from LBJ. He had to go to Miami to find a family-oriented environment.
I am thinking why does anyone want to go to Cleveland?
RedZone,
On the other hand, lots of hurricanes hit southern Florida.
on Chad. I thought it was amazing how the td run was made after a missed fieldgoal try.
Thats interesting. Probably takes a full quarter to make the necessary adjustments to a new game plan that occurs in the first and third quarters. Does that sound plausible?
There was a trend last season in key games. For example:
UH outscored UNLV in the first quarter (10-7) and second quarter (also 10-7). The fourth quarter was a tie. The *only* quarter that UH lost was the third quarter…and UH lost the game by 1 point.
The La Tech game was close at the half (10-6). La Tech won the 3rd quarter 14-0.
The Idaho game was close at the half (14-10). Idaho won the 3rd quarter 7-0.
UH won the 1st (14-7) and 4th quarters (7-3) against Nevada, but the 2nd and 3rd quarters were the difference.
UH won the 1st, 2nd, and 4th quarters against NMSU, but NMSU outscored UH 6-0 in the 3rd.
The Navy game was a tie in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th quarters. *UH* won the 3rd quarter and thus ended up with probably the best win last season.
Coach Coolen is leaving for the ESPY’s. I hope that is a nice sign!!!
I’ve already voted about 9 times.
I would like to thank all the people that let me use their PCs!!! 😆
Garret,
Maybe not physical but MENTAL fatigue?
A false sense of satisfaction can do a lot of damage.
Makes me wonder what’s going on the locker room at halftime.
If we look at 2008, the third quarter shows up as key again in several games. UH actually outscored its opponent in the 3rd quarter in about half of the games in 2008, much different than 2009.
SJSU won the 3rd quarter 7-0, so even though UH won the other 3 quarters SJSU won by 3.
UH won the 3rd quarter 3-0 against La Tech and won the game by 10. I’m not sure if the 3rd quarter stat can be considered critical in this game and several others from 2008, so I won’t list the other games that the stat probably didn’t factor in.
UH won the 3rd quarter against Nevada 10-7 and won the game by 4.
UH won the 3rd quarter big against Cincy (14-0)…something went well after halftime until the 4th quarter began.
Kazz,
Why would the Warriors have mental fatigue and their opponent not? If that is the case, it should be able to be addressed.
Raw data from last season
UH 0, Washington State 7
UH 0, UNLV 7
UH 0, La Tech 14
UH 0, Idaho 7
UH 0, Fresno State 14
UH 2, BSU 10
UH 0, Nevada 7
UH 7, Utah State 14 (not counting the TD to start the 4th quarter and I’m glad they missed another TD when their QB missed the wide open WR)
UH 0, NMSU 6
UH 0, SJSU 0
UH 7, Navy 0!!! (the difference in the game!)
UH 0, Wisconsin 7
Can’t mental fatigue be dependent on travel (i.e. jetlag)?. Although there is no mention of whether those games are home or away, could there be a correlation with travel? Seems everytime I fly east jetlag is brutal. When I fly west, it seems bearable and I am better able to acclimate to the time difference. Just a thought.
I don’t care what happens in the third quarter as long as when the gun goes off at the end of the 4th quarter we are ahead by at least one point, but preferably 20.
Go Warriors!
As for fatique, all the football team neees to do
is to drink V-8 juice before and during the game.
And watch them go—-grrrrrrrrrr!
To provide some data for the question that gigi posed, the CFL has a salary cap where the entire team gets paid $4.1 million. The biggest salary is for the starting QB, of course.
The NFL salary cap last season was $102 million, 25x higher than the CFL cap. The CFL average salary is about $50k and the NFL average salary is about $1.8 million.
Any player that is on the active roster for at least 3 NFL games in a season gets a minimum of $295k. That means that any player who is on the roster for 3 games (and may not even play a single down) can make more than the highest paid player on a CFL team.
Careers in pro football are fairly short, so earning enough money to set up someone for their post-playing career is important. An NFL career also is a big boost for anyone who wishes to go into coaching or other jobs such as broadcasting, where CFL playing time is not as helpful.
MIH – #110
Yea, Garret does do alot on this blog which is much appreciated. I can only imagine that Garret is able to crunch the numbers and provide stats using only <1% of his brain, where in comparison to us, we have to use 100% and a calculator with an rather large error rate. Kind of makes you wonder what the other 99% of Garrets brain is doing. Time travel? 😀
3rd quarter was Hawaii’s best against wisconsin. but then Warriors got beat in every stat catagory except for the one fumble by Wisc.
The only stat I am interested in is run defense.
Shoko,
I didn’t actually do any work for that stat…I already had the information saved from last year. I noticed the problem early last season and began tracking the stat and posting it to this blog. After awhile the stat got worse and worse and the media and others started talking about it too. I think it cost UH in several games, and if UH had won just 1 more game…
I’m tired of doing research for an economic development study (non-sports related) and my girls are so loud during their play date at our home that I cannot concentrate anyway. That gives me a window of time to kill, so I’m blogging. In 2 weeks or so I won’t get to blog or even get on the web on weekdays (except for early morning and late at night), so I’m enjoying this free time.
RedZone,
2009: UH was #107 in the country in run D, allowing about 202 rushing yards per game. 4.89 yards per carry.
2008: UH was #65 in the country in run D, allowing about 142 rushing yards per game. 3.86 yards per carry.
2007: UH was #41 in the country in run D, allowing about 134 rushing yards per game. 3.48 yards per carry.
So the trend went:
2007: 134 rushing yards allowed per game
2008: 142 rushing yards allowed per game
2009: 202 rushing yards allowed per game
2007: 3.48 yards per carry
2008: 3.86 yards per carry
2009: 4.89 yards per carry
So, you are correct that the run D needs to improve. I’m hoping that the improved depth at DT will be the key to the improvement against power rushing teams.
Re: 3rd quarter — it is fascinating to read the trends and see instinct borne out in #s. Could it be something unscientific like adrenaline? Also, thanks for the Chad link. 🙂
I like the depth at DT but UH needs to be more stout at DE and ILB. Another stat I don’t care for is total tackles. What good is a tackle if it is made after a 5 yard gain? What good is a tackle if it is made in the endzone?
Garret,
Well, regardless, the information you provide is appreciated. Saves me, as well as others, alot of time searching online, especially when questions arise. Other blogs I have visited, unfortunately, are rarely comprised of people that provide an analytical perspective on sports in general. Most want to talk trash or other. Not my thing…
Anyway, enjoy the time blogging. As for me, my daughter has been nagging me about playing the “Sorry” game with her. Had her busy with the coloring books, but that didn’t last long. Be back later…
Protector on #55,
I’m politely requesting that you change your blog name to something else as I’ve blogged under this moniker for nearly 2 years. Please change to avoid confusion.
Mahalo, Ray
Remember when a WAC team beats a team during the course of the season they will plummet off the charts. Try looking for results how many WAC teams won a game against a top 25 team during the season and I’ll bet the results is a lot better. Numbers and their measurements can be skewed and interpreted in many different ways. Fact is though the WAC is the Weakest Athletic Conference and is getting weaker.
Does anybody know what the football team eats prior to the game? Is their meal carb heavy or protein heavy?
How many hours before the game do they eat?
A friend of mine has been prepping for the Honolulu marathon, and his wife told me he has been eating a lot of carbs.
Nice video of Amber Kaufman talking story on UH website.

When we beat USC on Sept 2, I know they’ll be a lot of Tsaikos wanting a copy with the dual audio.

” … Seems everytime I fly east jetlag is brutal. When I fly west, it seems bearable and I am better able to acclimate to the time difference. Just a thought… ”
Same with me. East bound for me was “brutal”, especially going into the 5 hour, 6 hour time zones. “Back in my day” I used to be a frequent flyer to Charlotte, Wash DC, Atlanta, Chi, Minn/St Paul, Boulder (Denver), Dallas, San Jose. When I flew to Chi and further east, I would try to go one day earlier.
West bound for me was no problem at all. Good thoughts.
A friend told me that flying from Hawaii to Seattle over the North Pole to Europe is better than flying to NYC and then to Europe.
Is it faster?
CSB,
Not Hi-def, but Wide Screen for sure. Too hard for me to do Hi-def at the moment. Let’s hope the demand is high.
gigi #146:
All things being equal, is it indeed faster to fly from Hawai’i to Europe via Seattle or Vancouver (and over the North Pole) versus flying through one of the NYC airports, as it would shave over 1,000 miles and 2+ hours of flying time.
Of course, none of this considers actual flights and layover times, which may skew things if you end up with a ridiculously long layover somewhere.
Committed RW,
Thanks for the info. I’ll keep that in mind the next time I plan a trip to Europe.
In 1990, I flew to Los Angeles then to NYC then to Frankfurt and then finally to Croatia. That trip was grueling to say the least. I’ll never fly that route again… especially with no sleep!!!
Re#144: From my reliable resources Derek Fisher will be back as a Laker ready for a three peat with the BEST NBA player in the League Kobe Bryant !
Heat can only pay Derek the veterans minimum of 1.35 million as Mr. Fisher just visted Miami to see the max that they were offering and to see who else they were getting. Derek is LOVED over here in LA as the Lakers are always over the cap as a deal will be worked out for him to retire as a LAKER !
Tough point guard over the years who is just plain “clutch” when it comes to winning championships and making BIG plays !
Lakers are not a cheap organization as Jerry Buss takes care of his players as that is why we have won 17 NBA World championships with 10 of them under the ownership of Dr. Buss.
Met him back in 1999-2000 when he parked his limousine outside the forum club and invited me to sit inside with him while sharing a drink as I thanked him for bringing Shaq and Kobe together as Dr. Buss is a business man and has given the full reign to his daughter Jeannie who will one day become President and Owner of this billion dollar franchise !
Lakers will THREE PEAT !
R Cliff,
Hmmm. Hope you’re right. News travels fast, that’s for sure. I’ll email your opinion to my husband. Thanks.
gigi
travels through Seattle can also depend of time of year and the winds
once took 12 hours from Seattle to London
but only 10 hours on the return flight a week later
Fish wouldn’t have been back with the Lakers had his daughter’s health not been a factor (in 2007 he was with the Jazz, asked Jazz to release him from his contract because of her situation). Cities with treatment facilities that they were interested in: LA, NYC and Cleveland.
CS Boy,
10-12 hours is pretty fast. Planes are faster these days.
In 1970, it took me 10 hours to fly from London to NYC…
So 10 hrs from London to Seattle is darn good!
J,
Yeah, I know. I guess it’s best for Derek and the Lakers that he stay put.
Re#142: Beating USC is a nice thought BUT in reality Hawaii has to play the GREATEST game in their illustrious history to knock off the men of Troy !
Despite their losing of prize recruits with junior and senior second team players transfering they will still be LOADED with talented athletes coming to the Islands as hopefully Hawaii can just compete with them and not be blown out as the last two meetings with them at Aloha Stadium and the Coliseum was painful to watch !
Lane Kiffin will be having the Trojans ready as well as 7,500 USC fans are coming over to spend BIG money and enjoy their time in paradise. If Hawaii can just keep it close that alone will be a victory in it self as over the years it has been “blown city” with margin of points in BIG double figures !
I wonder where the 7,500 USC fan will be sitting at the stadium. Will they be facing the setting sun? LOL.
gigi
actually, those times were in the 1970’s too
when I worked for the airlines and could travel for almost free
CS Boy,
did you fly over the North Pole?
gigi
if not directly over, pretty close to it
on the way back from London we had a 12 hour flight delay.
We had to go through immigrations to re-enter the country just to eat. Found out the delay was the lights over the emergency exit didn’t work. My question was, couldn’t they pass out 10 flashlight to 5 flight attendants and they could point to the door if there was an emergency?
J#153: You are correct that we got Derek back from Utah because of his daughters eye illness as really we shouldn’t of let him leave after we lost to the Pistons in the NBA Finals.
That season was so BAD with Kobe and Shak not getting along and demanding a trade for ONE of them to go. Karl Malone injured during the series and alleged by Vanessa that he made unwanted passes toward her as Kobe became irrate with the mail man as they were once friends. Gary Payton could not adjust to the triangle and having the LA media print his displeasures towards Phil Jackson in which Phil did not take to well as closed meetings were often the case between the two head strong egos !
Season ended with many players leaving or retiring as D. Fish left for Utah and came back just in time to fill the EXPERIENCE point guard we need to run the triangle as Phil will be back for one more time ONLY as this is it for him as we look forward to a possible three peat !
Miami has made it INTERESTING with the Three Kings but you have to do it on the court not on paper !
CS Boy,
Good you worked for the airlines because of the benefits.
Back in 1968, I applied for a stewardess (flight attendant) position at TWA but was turned away because they said I had to be 5’2″ tall. I was 5’1″. Darn!
But I worked my way around the world from 1968-1975. Mostly clerical, some teaching.
I worked for China Airlines as a passenger service supervisor from 1973 until 1994 when I got replaced by contract workers. The last 12+ years been helping flowergirl with Petals & Beans on Ala Moana Bl
Have a good nite folks and pleasant dreams !
CS Boy,
Do you speak Mandarin or Cantonese?
Kapakahi on SH Forum reports that S Rykin Enos (safety/corner) may be trying to return to the football team. He played Basketball last year. He was seen practicing with the DBs.
Just got back from the Kapolei carnival.
I’m thinking: There’s a lot of empty spaces out there.
I’m also thinking: Why the heck is the traffic so screwed up over there?
It’s disappointing how short the turn area is to go H-1 East.
#167… ST…
Hahaha! That’s the one thing we’ve been complaining about since the early stages of this Kapolei development… WHO forgot to plan free-flowing streets??? Nice that there’s been a huge building bonanza, but the basic infrastructure of the whole place leaves everyone wondering… “Wha…???”
Oh, and can Ferd find a better title for his column?
I mean, Ferd’s Words??? A simpleton elementary title at best.
And Ferd’s picture. I’ve met Mr. Lewis a couple times. He’s a friendly chap, secretive – according to Mr. Tsai – but friendly. I understand he speaks fluent Japanese.
Yet in his picture, he look angry mean.
He looks like he just busted up three UFC fighters and is now daring all of us to get in the ring with him.
No. That honor is reserved for half the 20-30 year season ticket holders. 🙁
But the USC game time was set by ESPN.
The other games were not.
Survey says…..?
I wonder if season ticket renewals were slower on the mauka side. Duh.
I was going to delay in protest but managed to move over to the 49 yard line, so renewed early. Which means somebody gave up.
Manoa Mist,
Point well taken. However, those were hubby’s words, not mine. I was merely quoting him.
Maybe, he should have said “bull’s feces.”
SteveM,
Is the mauka section the one that will be shown on TV? If so, I can understand why UH would put UH fans there, although they will be blinded by the sun. Ah, well, time to show team spirit, eh?
Article about Chad Owens.
Toronto’s main newspaper has an article about Chad in their Sunday paper.
I’m glad that Chad’s wife and kids will join him in Toronto.
Was at a wedding recently that CO’s kids were in the wedding party. Cute kids.
btw, Chad looked like he was in great shape!
Garret,
Those are terrific articles! I am so happy for Chad! It’s about time we had good news about him, and I know all of us here feel relieved that he is doing so well.
Re 137 – never noticed – sorry!
Well done – you’ve just rated a new admirer 🙂
Well done – you’ve just rated a new fan 🙂

Scientists have discovered a compound that makes brain cells grow and appears to be a potent treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. This compound has been proven to be *300 times* more effective than one compound currently in clinical trails for Alzheimer’s disease!
Remember the 2008 health scare scandal over melamine-tainted milk products that killed at least 6 children and sickened 294,000 others? Chinese inspectors just found *76 tons* of dairy products that were tainted with melamine, some at 559 times the legal maximum! It appears that these tainted products are leftovers from the 2008 recall…some company stashed them and was going to sell the tainted products 2 years later.
There are now 5 billion mobile subscriptions (with 2 million more added per day) in the world, amazing when you consider that there are just 6.9 billion people in the world. In the year 2000, 720 million people had mobile subscriptions…which is less than the number of mobile users China has today!
Interesting interview with the man credited as the inventor of the cell phone–people who got to try it out (including Pres. Reagan and VP Bush) were amazed at being able to walk around and make a phone call. It should be noted that he invented the cell phone *before cordless phones existed*.
This woman apparently turned *130* yesterday–she was born on July 8, 1880!

Thank you so much for all the birthday wishes!!! I don’t post much but I do try to log on everyday because I learn so much from all you. One day, I hope to make it to a Tsaiko gathering so I can meet all of you wonderful people. But for now, happy posting and again thank you! Go Warriors!
#170.
Manoa Mist: Ferd’s Words wasn’t his idea. Gave him (good-natured) grief about it the first week. The SA dropped Ferd Word’s from the print edition several weeks ago – it’s now simply Ferd Lewis – but has chosen to retain Ferd Words online.
Can UH offer Chad’s son a scholarship now???
How high is the pole? Is the pole lit so that the pilot can see it, to make sure that he doesn’t run into it? Can you see santa’s shop from the sky, when flying over the North Pole? Hmmmm.
GO WARRIORS!!!
BEAT USC!!!
Ferd’s words?
I thought bird is the word.
b b b b b bird, bird, bird, bird is the word.
I thought grease is the word. 😀
oh lookie. i scared everybody away again
OK — semi-serious answer to the polar route (disregarding the height of the North Pole beacon). This require distance calculation along a “great circle” between the two locations in question. See…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great-circle_distance
…or we could ask a second grader with a piece of string and a globe of the earth to compare the two routes. 😐
🙄
Who has a globe at home nowadays?

ai-yah, it’s official, per ST’s column:
2 UH commits fail to make grade
By Stephen Tsai
POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Jul 11, 2010
Two top recruits — linebackers Zachary Quines of Mililani High and Tu’ulauena Lolohea of Kapolei High — will not play for the University of Hawaii this season.
Both signed NCAA letters of intent with the Warriors in February.
Quines, who is 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, said he will attend Arizona Western, a junior college in Yuma, Ariz. Lolohea will attend UH-West Oahu for a year with the intent of transferring to UH-Manoa next June.
Quines said he did not meet the academic requirements to play for the Warriors this season.
He said he decided to enroll at Arizona Western, where he will receive a football scholarship.
Because he is a non-qualifier, Quines needs to earn an associate’s degree to transfer to an NCAA Bowl Championship Subdivision school.
Quines said it is his wish to play for the Warriors in 2012.
“I want to take care of business and come back home,” Quines said. “I want to play for Hawaii.”
One scouting service rated Quines as the state’s fifth-best recruit. The UH athletics website said Quines was ranked as the nation’s No. 17 inside linebacker.
He was recruited by Oregon, Oregon State and Washington before signing with the Warriors.
Lolohea, according to UH, was ranked as the state’s 12th-best recruit and the nation’s 35th-best inside linebacker.
As a Kapolei senior, Lolohea amassed 11 sacks and forced four fumbles. He was recruited by Arkansas, Arizona and Colorado before signing with the Warriors.
Lolohea needs to earn 24 transferable credits to be eligible to transfer to UH-Manoa.
If he qualifies, he will lose a year on his five-year eligibility clock, and will have four years to play four seasons.
Also, Tim Brown, a linebacker from Waianae who was on the Warriors’ spring roster, has decided to transfer to a junior college.

The plum harvest season at Kokee State Park on Kauai is open, with officials saying this year’s crop is only average.
Permits to pick plums there are available at the park headquarters. There is no fee, but forms need to be completed and dropped in the box after harvesting.
The season began yesterday and will run through Aug. 11. Harvest times are between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. in designated areas. Each person will be allowed to take up to 5 pounds of plums per day for personal consumption. Other conditions are specified on the permit.
For more information, call the State Parks Office in Lihue at 274-3445.
The Toronto Star has a nice article about Chad Owens today.
Congratulations to Ezekiel Lau, winner of two titles in the NSSA surfing championships in Huntington Beach.
Zeke is the son of Leonard and Daina Lau. Leonard is a former WR for the Hawaii Rainbows, and Daina was a former Hawaii State sotball player of the year, but ended up playing volleyball for the Wahine for a short time.
Meant to type “softball”

In regards to the distance between London and NY, or London and Seattle, as well as the time it takes to get there…
I remember being on a Navy P3C Sub Hunter while stationed in Korea back in 83-84. We flew from Korea, up into the jet stream near the north pole, then back down through Alaska to central California. On the way back to Korea, we were told that our trip was to take quite a bit longer than our trip to California. Had to ask… that’s when the pilot explained to us about the Polar Jet Stream. It just made the trip faster since we were flying with the stream. Then again, it made the trip seem longer on the way back since we could not use that natural force.
So, although the distance from London to NY is shorter, it may actually take longer to fly that route than it might to travel eastward from London, through Seattle, to NY. I don’t know if it truly is a shorter flight time, but I do know from experience that going from Korea to central California and back required two different amounts of time.
That was our science lesson in the sky anyway. And we all believed that our pilot knew what he was talking about.
Good morning Tsaikos
Great Morning All!
Hope that all recruits will eventually be able to get cleared to be Warriors.
Have a terrific day erryboddy…..
HiHo!
Howzit whitey. 🙂
Read the column this am on “student being extorted” by UH. Students have a choice and the activities fees is just an additional fee. If you don’t want to pay the fee, you can go to Chaminade, HPU, UH Hilo, or UH Maui and still get your degree. If you want to talk about student rip offs, look at how the academic professors require you to buy different books for the same course each year. Paying $300 for one book!!!!! Now that is “extortion”.
whitey,
I feel “extorted” everyday paying taxes and watching the $$$ pay for things I don’t agree with….welcome to the real world, ASUH!
Really gotta go now…
Also in the same article, it is amazing how the writer tries to stick it to UH for Coach McMackin’s pay. Coach’s pay was negotiatated just like his pay was thru his representative, so why is he bitching???? If he is jealous of what Coach Mc makes, then he should start looking for another job which pays more.
d1, have a great day.
d1, where did you get those quotes from? In 212, 214-216.
Thanks
I too am very, very disappointed in Dave Reardon’s article in today’s paper. Imagine the ripple effect if Hawaii can no longer afford UH athletics. Among other things, some of the SA writers will lose their jobs. I’m not going to post too many of the ripple effects on this post as I want to keep this topic going on today’s new post. All Tsaikos, when the new blog comes up today, lets hear from you, the impact of UH noe having sports.
#222 noe=not
New blog up.
Well done – you’ve just rated a new follower 🙂
I truly loved this brilliant article. Please continue this awesome work. Regards, Duyq.
This site is a walk-through for all the information you wanted about this and didn’t know who to ask. Look here, and you’ll definitely find it.
Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
This is good- a neat posting.

Great article.Much thanks again. Fantastic.
Random question: I am starting my own blog to share my photography experiences. Do you find it hard or easy to post consistently?
Great post. YOu make it seem so easy to share your experiences. I wish I could do as well in sharing on my blog. I just got it started and sometimes feel stuck on what to share or if it is the right thing to share. what to do?
