UH to hire Mouse
Mouse Davis will rejoin the UH coaching staff, succeeding Ron Lee, who announced his resignation last month. A news conference is scheduled for tomorrow.
Davis will be named as assistant coach in charge of receivers, although he will serve primarily as a mentor to first-year offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich, who will call all of the plays.
Davis, 77, was a UH assistant from 2004-2006, having previously served as head coach in four professional leagues. He is regarded as the architect of the modern run-and-shoot offense.

After Steven Stepter delivered chinstrap-loosening hits in the spring games the past two years, it was decided to make him more of a defensive weapon. During unsupervised workouts the past three weeks, Stepter, who was recruited as a cornerback, has been practicing at strong safety.
“He can hit,” said nickelback Richard Torres, who has served as one of Stepter’s mentors.
Stepter was moved to safety during the second week of the 2010 spring training. But the experiment did not last long. Because of injuries at corner, he was moved back for the remaining of spring training.
Now, it appears, the experiment at safety will become a permanent move.

Chatted with a certain db coach in the late spring and he might have mentioned that it would be a good decision for LL to pursue football, as he has the pedigree and body type to succeed at either safety or ‘backer.
Funny, at basketball games my son and I would discuss LL’s tenacity at playing defense and how he would make a good safety in football.

No secret…Just been fortunate to have been on the same plane as they were. Funny thing is, I didn’t recognize the coaches until Coach Rolo said “hey” standing in front of him with my Hawaii lanyard around my neck. Coach Aranda fell asleep on the ride back home.
Coach Rolo did mention the offense is going to be good this year and there are some young stud OL.
Another funny story is my co-worker is a BYU fan and I mentioned that to Coach Rolo and he said “is there another plane?”

Good Afternoon Tsaiko Nation !
High School City Football is “BACK” and the Dorsey Dons have changed their run oriented game to a passing spread offense with an OUTSTANDING Senior quaterback in Joseph Gray who transfered from fame Inglewood H.S. and passed for nearly 2,000 yards last season while sharing quaterback duties. Gray is mobile with an accuarate arm as his scrambling ability is compare to Mike’s Vick as his 40 and verticle jump are “eye opening” to watch !
Dorsey will be battling Crenshaw for the City Championship as both teams are “LOADED” with athletic underclassman as “The Shaw” is the two time city champion ! JJ hiring of Elimienan is pure genius as he is definetly will be in the mix with USC and UCLA for both Dorsey and Crenshaw players !
Fremont H.S. will also be in the title hunt as 6’4″ Kaylan Ayers a defensive end who recorded 16 sacks as a junior is being hearlded as the “TOP” city defensive player this year as the Pathfinders with Inglewood H.S; Washington H.S; San Fernando H.S. and Locke H.S. will make the Southern City League loaded with senior and underclass man football players that Colleges from all over will be recruiting !
Former UH stand out receiver Dewayne Jett has a 6’4″ tight end son Brandon Jett who attends Sherman Oaks Notre Dame as a Junior with his skills even better then his Father who “starred” for UH during the seventies !
All the mention teams and 16 more are playing in the Beverly Hills Tournament starting this weekend with the semi and finals scheduled for the mid week of July. UH needs to get it’s face in the door with ALL this LA talent as having Hawaii ties the only criteria in recruiting to Manoa is “ridiculous” to say the least as just being visible enough to show faces to these H.S. Coaches will leave an indelible impression as Fresno, Nevada, San Jose and New Mexico State are not wasting time !
RainbowCliff’s backyard has a lot more playmates this H.S. football season and “Athletic” is their anatomy of structure !

Have you sent an email to Coach mack about the bountiful studs athletes in the SoCal area you just described?
Sending an offensive and defensive coach may go a long way into securing future commitments from players in this area/league.
Maybe, UH has left over trips on Hawaiian Air to send the coaches. Good, sound, small investment for a lifetime of players!!! Must look to the future. Secure excellent student athletes and use this as a base to WIN, WIN, WIN!!!!!!

#88 RainbowCliff… as often as we’ve been seeing these messages, I do hope we’ve got at least a couple of coaches on hand to scout the talent. If they’re being quiet about it, fine… but please send a couple of reps to at least make our presence and interest known!
Everyone knows we can’t survive on local talent alone. At least not yet. Would be outstanding to eventually achieve that pinnacle, but for now, we better be looking at every possible alternative! Thanks for the updates. Makes the mouth water… like I’m staring at a Loco Moco with extra rice and mac salad, just waiting to inhale it down!

Hope you and the family are well as I wish Midor7 a belated happy birthday !
Got some vacation time this week as I recreate here in LA with my many ties to all athletic venues on the HS, College and Pro Level !
I know you and the A-House family will be “Road Warriors” this football season as West Point and Colorado will have you cheering your lungs out for some early wins as 7,200 USC fans will be invading Aloha Stadium September 2nd and they will be “LOADED” with talent and wanting to show a national tv audience that being on probation hasn’t changed a thing !
The last meetings against USC has been a “BLOW OUT” as I hope Mac and his boys will just compete and not get blown as my USC alumni associates are wagering 30 points or more on the spread. In any case Hawaii is going to make money as I am happy that the game is still on as my resources here in LA assured me they needed the game and trip to releive from all the trouble and sanctions that probation has brought them.
Be well kind sir and give my love to Mrs. A House !
Never mind the lumber. I want to see some Stepter Steel.

You might remember me as being Ray(mond), the unofficial T.A.(demonstrator) for Ms. Lorraine Kaina’s Ballroom & Disco dance class in the Lower Quarry during your playing days. Mr. A House & Michigan Warrior, I have been told directly and indirectly from the athletic department that “I am wasting my time” trying to recruit for Hawaii as Coach Mac has his own recruiting philosophies and “South Central Los Angeles” is not on the radar map !
In his mind he is convince ‘NONE’ of these talented athletes he can get as recruiting budget is an issue and having any of his assitant coaches come here is not in the future plans as having my “STATURE” down here getting involved will be an NCAA violation as I have been told “Thanks but No Thanks” !
The thought is these inner city kids could not adapt to Hawaiian culture and being thousand miles away the investment is to GREAT a risk as they will just end up at USC or UCLA with the remainder of talented players being taken by local and out side JC’S or the MWC as well as your WAC rivals as going to Fresno State over Hawaii is like having pork chops over prime rib with out the guava and sushi !
Sorry to report all this to you but it is what it is as of TODAY I have not spoken to one LA High School Coach or player as I have been told to just be a “CHEERLEADER” and leave my back yard to play with others !
Sad and highly “DISRESPECTFUL” !
RainbowCliff,
I looked at the photo from my scrapbook last night. I’m not sure it’s you as I couldn’t see the jersey #. Did you play with Jimmy Baker? It’s a photo of Jimmy with the ball and another UH player close by which I think could be you. Also, did you have a mustache? I’ll try to find someone with a scanner and forward it to you. Maybe we should post the photo on the blog and have everyone guess if it’s you! 🙂

Rainbow Cliff,
That’s not good news regarding the recruiting. We’ve just got to allocate more $ to football and recruiting in particular. The consequences of the football program not doing well and not getting invited to the Mountain West or Pac-12 is too severe. We need football to lead the way. Suck it up and put more $ in the recruiting budget.
Can somebody say Von Appen part 2.
Mack better get his head out his you no what or this might be the beginning of the end of U.H Football.
This year is the pivotal year to see whether we are going upwards or we are going to be extinct. Let all hope for the best.
#122… Oh Em Gee!!!
I believe the initial effort would be fruitful. Just to get our name into the pot. All it takes is one from one school, and the doors may open.
As a former Commander in the Army used to tell me… “When you get command of your own unit, then can you call the shots.” I used to hate hearing it… tried all kinds of different angles to get my plans into action. Some finally took hold, after having gained the ear(s) of a couple of Senior NCO’s who had to convince our Commander that it was HIS ideas all along.
Oh well. Thanks for the reports, though. Always love reading them.
Everything unfortunately is about $. Can’t blame June Jones for leaving with all our $ problems. Look at his situation now. He’s taking a staff of 32 to Samoa. We can’t even afford soap or flying a coach to Los Angeles…probably the most convenient place to fly to outside our state. Somehow, we’ve got to make it work.

Sadly, Miss Kaina passed away some years ago as I was in Hawaii 2005 when I was honored with the Kane Fernandez Award in which she showed up at the Stanley and showered me with love, affection and a beautiful lei !
Owe her sooooooo much as she served as my academic advisor as her words to me I will never forget as when I was struggling with injuries and my playing days were regulated on the bench I was so distraught with sadness to her when I did not have my completed test to her as she kept me after class as I cried to her of the shame I was going through she looked at me and hugged me with her TREMENDOUS heart as she said ” I love you not because you are Cliff Sanchez the basketball player BUT Cliff Sanchez the person” as those words “INSPIRED” me to finish it up as she gave me a re-make of the test in which you graded and passed as eventually I graduated with that degree !

Curt #123 & #126: I never had the pleasure of playing with Jimmie Baker as those guys were way before my time !
I came during the probationary period as It was I, Gary Gray, Wayne Crowe, Gavin Smith, Antoine Goodlowe, Eddie Torres, Packy Ryan, John Moore, Kevin Johnson and Gary Newsome etc. That year was 76-77 / 78-79 as it was tough with the #1 basketball schedule in the country as we played with “HEART” as won some BIG games and lost quite a few BUT we played hard every night in front of a packed Blaisdel arena who supported us with all their cheers and heart !
Sorry of the news on recruiting here in LA as I think it will be just better to not post the athletic HS potential here as in reality UH will never come down and make their prescence felt as you will just see them on other teams displaying their talents to our opponents as I forgot Colorado will now be smiling ear to ear as they are recruting that high prize quaterback from Dorsey and picking up any left overs from this OUTSTANDING Senior class of South Central High School Football Players that are coming out of Los Angeles as High School City Football is “BACK” !
Hiya DPK!!! How are you? Are you swimmin’, eatin’ and bloggin’?
RainbowCliff,
Sorry about that–I thought that it might have been you. I didn’t take any photos during your tenure as I graduated from UH in May 76. But, I do remember your name and also the others…especially Gavin Smith who was gunnin’ it from everywhere.
Summer is for swimmin’, eatin’ and bloggin’.
RainbowCliff,
Can you be more specific about who told you directly that Coach Mack is not interested in recruiting LA. If you give me a name I will personally call Coach Mack and ask him about it. This is disturbing if true.
Actually, UH does recruit in the L.A. area.
UH recruits throughout California. And Washington. And in Texas. And Las Vegas …
After looking at Sportsbows list of scholarships offered, it seems to me that many of them are from California. Could this be a case of, the coaches aren’t evaluating players like me syndrome. I see gripes like this all the time on the other blogs. Not that I read them much since I spend most of my time on this blog.
Sitting here watching the NBA draft and noticed that the WAC has already landed so far, two(2) players on teams in the 1st round….#’s 10/16 respectively.
I’m thinking??…heck!, professional bb and fb teams will seek out players for their teams regardless what conference affiliation….BCS, non-AQ, etc. UH has quite a few of their own making it to the bigs as we have all witnessed. That being said, I’m more focused on how UH just plays their best and continues to help all of their athletes achieve personal goals for a better life.
Rainbow Cliff,
I am another fan who remembers your playing days, and if anything at all, it’s for the spirit with which you played which I remember most; don’t get discouraged if your good intentions are not appreciated from the top brass as you might want them too….your good cheer and intentions will pay off when you least expect it to. Just keep going and don’t make them change “YOU.”
Hey jojo!
Yes I am! Thanks!
Sometimes I even Boom Boom, too…
Hey homey –
If you notice, I’m short one “Boom” in the line above, so I guess you’re right. 😆
MichiganWarrior #128: Sir I read your words and commandments from you military background BUT in reality Hawaii is not Fort Knox and Mac is no General Patton as the troops has not been deployed to South Central Los Angeles !
Way back in the 70’s there were MANY players coming from LA, Orange County and San Diego areas as Wilbert Haslip, Dana McClemore, Gary Allen, Dewayne Jett, Karl Kennybrew, Duane Coleman, Verlon Redd, Mike Stennis, Pat Schmidt, Chris Roscoe, George Bell, Raphael Cherry, Jim Donovan, Dan Audick and Don Weir just to name a few were “IMPACT” players and made their mark on Hawaii football !
Time has definetly changed BUT not have LA as a recruiting paradise for Hawaii in which SO many players dawn the Warriors colors is quite frankly “UNBELIEVABLE” as many are still around if we could map quest their where abouts !
So I gather MichiganWarrior those days are just good memories and we should fall in line with our new leader orders on how the NEW regime of Warrior Football will be as I kind sir choose to be AWOL as USC, Army and Colorado are coming with HEAVY artillery and our kona shell and Haka is not going to cut the mustard as Trojans, Black Knights and Buffaloes are bringing in their own condiments and it’s not “pickel relish” !
summer is for swimmin, eatin and bloggin!
and golfin and cruisin and picnicin and partyin!
Summer is for swimmin’, eatin’ and bloggin’. And I’ll be in Hawaii next week to pick up the certificates.
Nice mention of UH in this article predicting upsets this season.
RAINBOWCLIFF: You might make your (recruiting) concerns known to Jim Donovan – after all he might be more simpatico being from that area.
#144 Mr. Tsai, UH does not recruit in South Central Los Angeles as IF they did then MORE players will be coming from Jeff High school, Dorsey, Inglewood, Leuzinger, Hawthorne, Washington, Fremont, Verbum Dei, Serra, St. Bernards, Dominguez, Locke H.S and Long Beach Poly Jack Rabbits !
You got Crenshaw BUT that was George Lumpkin leading the way and at this point he has been demoted away from MANY outstanding players he brought in from the “SHAW” over the years and many other inner city schools. I didn’t mention Carson, Banning and Narbonne High Schools who are on the rebound with many polynesian players making of their rosters and bringing back their winning traditions !
The route UH goes is JC as many of the LA Inner City players don’t make the grades so they end up at certain JC’S BUT you can rest assure that it is a pipe line that Division 1 school coaches has a relationship with that JC coach and school as South West JC is right down the road from me at the Al Wooten Center and Hawaii has NO where abouts of Imperial Highway and Western as they kind sir have a brand new stadium on campus that seats 15,000 as the crips and bloods attend the game with peaceful intentions cheering on their neighborhood homies !
KAZZ (#118)
Oh, don’t get me wrong, RainbowCliff! I’m 100% on your side. I just hope, as ST mentioned, that we are in fact active in the area, but just in a more incognito way. I wouldn’t be surprised to find enemies reading our blogs to gain other insight to our tendencies.
I was merely pointing out that sometimes, we want the brass at UH to do certain things, and they have a stubborn mentality about it. Maybe out in public, they are saying certain things, but behind closed doors, they have already acted on many points that their fans have suggested. They just don’t want to tip their hat. Remember Coach Mack’s first year? Blogs all over the place were saying how we should go after this guy or that guy. In the end, we got some, but a few were snagged at the last minute by bigger national players.
So, my analogy of “get your own unit and run it your way” was not directed at you in particular, but at all of us on the outside, looking in. It was just something that I frustratingly had to deal with, and figure out other ways of achieving my goals for the betterment of the unit.
By the way, I do remember most of the names you mentioned. I used to go to ball games at old Honolulu Stadium… splinters, termites, and all! Remember also, that we were a more smash-mouth team back then. I remember going hoarse, yelling “stick’em” all night, everytime our defense got on the field!
Thanks SteveM:

Old Diver #143: Sir, I have been told by certain fellow board members of the LWC, a fellow blogger here on the WB and a HIGH representative to Koa Annune who’s name or names I will not reveal because anonymity that “Coach Mac has his own recruiting philosophies and players that he will recruit must have Hawaiian background or relationships in Hawaii for them to show interest and recruit them for potential scholarships.”
I sir really find that so bizzare BUT dealing with what Hawaii athletics is today as when it was back when I and MANY LA athletes came to Hawaii free and willing just shows times has change and philosophy now is totally different today.
It dosen’t really bother me as UH cannot pay me IF I was to get involve as helping them is MASSIVE here in LA as their is so many schools and MANY athletes as gas is not cheap and attending any of these games requires time, money, food and visibility !
If you want to inquiry that is on you BUT like Mr. Tsai said they do recruit in California as they say BUT South Central Los Angeles is not one of their spots as I open Western and 91st daily and I don’t see no Aloha Attire but mines with the early morning street walkers catching the 115 downtown Los Angeles.

Prayers and positive thoughts for Shauna’s family during this difficult time.
Michigan Warrior, I understand completely and everything you have pointed out is not taken out of content. My position is only seeing that inner city athletes that I came from are still here and Hawaii ONCE had a recruiting force here cleaning up top teir players along the way.
They are hush hush in what they do now and have certain philosophies on how they recruit. One thing for sure I am glad I went during my time as certainly athletics todays is more rigid and athletes are monitored and watched closely which is good as MANY of them during my time did not graduate and hurt their chances to succeed in the professional world as there is a higher percentage of Hawaii athletes graduating today then there were during my time.
I kind sir am only a booster and I have accepted that role despite my athleic role to them 29 years ago. I don’t get discourage as it may sound on this blog BUT merely post the facts as really their is no athletic fraternity of mainland Hawaii athletes gathering or conversing as I communicate to you folks more then my fellow Rainbow Warriors who lives miles away as that sir is another story !
A pleasure MichiganWarrior as I enjoy your thoughtful posts and loyal support to Hawaii athletics !
Pipers Son: My recruiting concern has no IMPACT to Jim Donovan Athletic Administration. Jim is only concern with wins and losses, Athletic Budget and you as a fan filling the seats of Aloha Stadium so he can balance the books and keep lower campus in the black and out of the red with Hawaii hopefully maintaining Divison I status !
I know Jim and had many conversations with him on his “strategic plan” BUT it is not of his value to question his Head Coach recruiting polocies as Jim did not hire Mac as inheriting him will be the right definition and he will be evaluated like all his coaches on how they perform on the field and in the class room.
If he recruits South Central he will get “STUDS” if not you will see them on the other side of the ball as USC will have TONS of them as hopefully it won’t be 28 to 0 after the first quarter as despite there probation status the entire team is still intact as that player leaving for Boise State was a third string player and he came in to USC with All American credentials as that is how much USC is “LOADED” with talent !

mih,
yeah, i watched yesterday (off) and then when i woke up this morning i heard they were still playing. i thought it would’ve been a quick end to the match but turned it on just in time to see the last 2 points.
crazy.
Good evening Tsai-kos!!
Condolences to Shauna and her family.
2010-11 men’s basketball schedule released. Of interest, 12/17 game vs Chicago St on MAUI, DH classic and WAC play starts on the road BEFORE New Years. From the UH website:
summer is for swimmin’, eatin’ and bloggin’.
Condolences to Shauna and her Ohana, cherish the memories and celebrate your mom’s life with your friends and family.
mctruck: Thanks for the adulation and praises. All I do here is report the facts BUT I don’t live my life wondering IF Mack and UH will take all the info that I am providing as I sleep good every night honestly knowing I tried to help you good folks.
The first 3 games of the season are very difficult and UH better be prepared to compete and execute as starting 0-3 is a strong possibility with USC, Army and Colorado being some “TOUGH” opponents. To play the “BIG BOYS” you got to have speed, strength and quickness as SC and Colorado are BIG, fast and athletic as they will run the ball and throw to their wideouts as UH secondary will be tested early and their D line has to be better then last year to put some pressure on the quaterback as ALL three teams will run the ball until they break you mentally and physically.
USC will have a MASSIVE front line as their average size will be 6’5″ or better with weight size from 295 to 315. Quaterback Matt Barkley has added strength and accuracy to his 6-2 230 lb frame as he threw 5 touchdowns in thier reported scrimmage. Grable their 4 year starting back is running between the tacklers as he is punishing the secondary when he gets outside the box. Their D line will be strong and quick as hopefully UH recievers can deal with SC DB’S playing the “bump and run” as they are some “BIG” hitters and will be talking plenty of trash to intimidate your boys !
Will be going to one of their practices during August as my USC Alumni friend Stan Geebers is a BIG time booster and I convince him to let me go along with him on his vip status !
Can’t wear aloha that day as my Rose Bowl USC cap will have on to keep security off the trail on who I really am. Take care mctruck and continue GREAT success !
Well Tsaiko Nation it has been interesting in talking to you folks as spending ONE of my vacation days on line has been satisfactory and sufficient. After 10:00 tonight here and I have been with you folks for the past 10 hours which has really been my longest outing in quite some time.
Mahalo for the chat and condolences to Miss Shauna and her ohana as my prayers are with you during this difficult time of losing you mom. I thank all of you for your kind remarks and prayers when I lost my Mon in December as it helped me greatly during that grieving period.
Have a good night folks and belated happy birthday to Chopsueyboy !

Re: #163
Cliff, you know good and well that if USC offered and Hawaii offered, that south central recruit is NOT going to choose Hawaii. Let’s be real here. While I can appreciate your passion, enormous contributions to UH sports, and a seemingly endless list of important names/friends, etc, I must trust in the fact that as the public, we are NOT PRIVY to the whole story. You may get a little more information than Joe Public, but unless you are sitting there directly with Mack, you really have no say. I’m sure there is more to the story than simply “not recruiting south central.” Your passion lies in south central because that is your front yard. Coach Mack has a stable full of coaches/recruiters, and I’m going to trust that they are making the right choices. So far, his recruiting classes have been pretty good. He was also named Big 12 recruiter of the year when he was with Tech. So I’m not really one to believe that this man don’t know what he doing or got his head up his You-know-what just because he not VISIBLY recruiting south central. And I got news for you brother, Colorado’s been raiding south central for many years now. This is nothing new. Remember Eric Beinemy? Darian Hagan? JJ Flannigan? Dieon Figures?
Your passion is certainly appreciated. But brah, kick back. Trust in Mack’s plan. If the bugguh no work, then you get to tell us “I told you so!” And I’m sure saying that will coincide with Mack being replaced. If he don’t win over the next few years, we all know he probably won’t be retained. Let it run its course brotha. Hope for the best and Always keep supporting the WArriors no matter what.

Pomai – check written and will be in the mail tomorrow.
oops, correction, those former colorado players not all from South Central. But all from LA area.

Interesting dialog on recruiting philosophies. On a side note, everyone assumes that the Polynesian athletes on the continent are all eager to sign with UH, which isn’t the case. In many cases it’s an uphill battle as family pressure reigns supreme with a lot of Polynesian athletes. As was told to me by several Samoans players from Cali that I’d gotten to know in college, some families will discourage their sons from playing for UH because Hawaii is “too comfortable” for them and they won’t stay focused with their studies, training, on the field. One guy I knew, whose Mom was from Hawaii, said that she didn’t want him signing with Hawaii because, as she put it, “you’re gonna spend all of your time sitting around, drinking, getting fat, and amounting to nothing.” Pretty strong words and you can see some of the perceptions that UH coaches have to deal with in convincing parents to come aboard.
Another issue is simply distance for many players from the continent. I’ve also heard comments from African American players that Hawaii takes a lot of adjustment, because there’s not a large African American population here locally. I remember the actor who played TC on Magnum years ago complaining about the lack of a “black club scene” here locally and how disengaged African Americans feel here. He made those comments back in the 80’s and I don’t know if it still applies today. Then again, there are other schools where Black athletes have voiced more serious concerns. For example have things improved off the field in places like Boulder, Colorado for African American athletes. That town has a history of complaints and problems from Black athletes in terms of various degrees of discrimination. How easy or welcoming people in Salt Lake City to African Americans?
Sorry, that last sentence should be: How friendly and welcoming are the people in Salt Lake City (Univ of Utah) to African Americans, in general?
Old School Dave,
You should ask Lewis Walker.
Summer is for swimmin’, eatin’ and bloggin’.
Big Island Kurt, I appreciate your comments and read your interesting posts. I would comment further BUT a certain blogger who will remain annonymous has asked me to not comment any more on UH recruiting as the results from my talks will cause concerns from “BIG MONEY” coming to Hawaii athletics !
I gave him my word I would stop my information in respect to him as I will ask ALL of you to not mention “my back yard” in any of your posts as that what started this whole LA recruiting talk off as I really was minding my own business lurking on the blog until fellow posters ‘inquiring minds wanted to know” !
Take care Big Island Kurt and one day we will meet and share a Heineken as sports is one thing BUT friendship is “BETTER” !
2000: named Big 12 Recruiter of the Year (by Rivals.comn)

So, what have you done for us (UH), LATELY. Let’s me refresh your memory:

2009: 6-7
2010: ?
Another mediocre season will unfortunately translate into that infamous Hawaiian greeting ‘Aloha means…..GOODBYE!!!’
(stepping off the soapbox, now – oops, sorry for bringing up that ‘soap’ fiasco, again).
Old School Dave #180: Enjoyed your insights and perspectives on athletes choices and decesions as you really detail the facts from fiction. So much you stated was very true as our ethnic back ground and peer pressure from family members has a huge influence on athlete choices of perspective schools.
Social settings is a HUGE part in athletes decesions as well as food cuisine as I don’t know to many African American Athletes that warms up to sushi and lau lau. Have a good evening and thank you for your interesting and thoughtful comments !

The win loss record for those years reflects the quality of recruiting when JJ was coach.
Summer is for swimmin’, eatin’ and bloggin’. And counting down the days ’til football starts!
If Mouse is technically the WR coach but his job is primarily to mentor Rolo, who will be doing the day-to-day coaching of the WRs? If the answer is Lelie and Rivers, I hope that UH’s compliance officer has a lot of time on her hands…
ok, never posted before, but i just can’t hold this back anymore. i understand rainbowcliff is a great supporter and has to be commended on his youth work, but c’mon, how the hell do you graduate with english skills like that? huh? i mean, how? am i missing something? i am confused. sorry to be a downer, but i am at a loss with this. i can hardly read the posts without wondering. others have to be wondering too. what’s the story? my apologies rainbowcliff, but i had to let this out of my system. i will go back to permanent lurking since i am sure i will get slammed for this post.

Does Maui have a Waimea?
What’s the real scoop!
bloggers state that JJ left the cupboard bare, no recruits, why we finished badly in ’08 N ’09
other bloggers blame JJ for not recruiting at all.
Some bloggers shredded Reinbold as taking credit for recruiting he didn’t do, it was the Lees and Miano who should be credited.
so if JJ didn’t recruit, and Reinbold didn’t recruit as much as he is given credit for, then didn’t our coaches on staff today recruit the fb players we have the last two years and the returnees today, and therefore our record should reflect their recruiting as well as Mac recruiting the last 2 years. No? How do some bloggers credit our fb losses with the coaches that left, primarily JJ, because they didn’t recruit, but we did recruit, and the recruiters are still on staff (Ron Lee will be leaving the staff tomorrow).
Sorry deep lurker still trying to grasp the english language as maybe one day we can sit together and you can cover all the basics with me as really I have made sufficient strides along the way as years ago I was “HORRIBLE” !
Spelling has improved and vocabulary is getting better !
Practice, Practice !
deep lurker, hawaiian creole, aka pidgin, is okay dokey. Wait till bighilo2 posts during the football season, its a form of communicating. Pidgin, slang, rap, whatever, its the bloggers way of communicating, doesn’t reflect how he speaks or write in business venue when he needs to address others.
deep lurker…
It’s just a blog. We’re not here to get our conjugations perfect, or our verb tense.. even spelling isn’t really an issue. We’re here to communicate our thoughts and feelings, not to be graded for our grammar or punctuation (I noticed you don’t capitalize the start of each sentence). It’s just a blog not an English class. Not a college course. I think RainbowCliff communicates his thoughts and feelings exceptionally well. Better still, I feel he not only communicates his thoughts and feelings well but is also able to relay those thoughts into action. Something so many university grads cannot do. Being able to write English without error is no guarantee of success. Being able to communicate your thoughts and communicate them well even with less than perfect English is far more critical to success.
Btw deep lurker,
My wife was a student at Windward CC… she went there for two years and maintained a 4.0 average and was on a full scholarship her last year. She could have continued on scholarship but decided to start her career as a photographer since she already had her Masters from La Sorbonne. Her English, though, isn’t perfect. She grew up in France. Her parents are Chinese. She speaks, writes, reads, Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese), French, and English. Her English, however, is far from perfect. Her Korean and Japanese far worse. She’s afraid to blog in English because of what people might say about her English.
It’s a shame, really, because she has so much to offer for she can view politics and other issues from the perspective of three different cultures.
We should encourage all people to express their views, share their thoughts regardless of their mastery of the English language. If not, we only cheat ourselves of the wealth of knowledge and insight they might have to offer.
Goodnight all!
And remember:
Summer is for swimmin’, eatin’ and bloggin’…. and for hiring Mouse Davis!
Deep Lurker I know one thing you need to keep on lurking as questioning any one intelligence and how they graduated is pretty insulting to say the least !
I don’t question who you are and what you do as I am sorry to find out that a person like you exist now can you read and understand that !
I feel sorry for individuals like you as you hide behind your blogger name and shower insults along the way as didn’t you learn respect and manners to your adults as obvious I am not to blame for your misguided growth and development !
Tell you what when I post just close your eyes from seeing my grammer as that way we will never meet and that will save me from knowing a sorry person like you who really think you have mastered the english grammer as I have and make more money then you, live in a 4 bedroom Mansion with swimming pool and drive two cars a 4 door european coupe sedan and convertible roadster as I know you can read that “SUCKER” !
Good evening ladies and gentlemen!
Congrats to Coach Mouse! Hope he fills in the little holes left in this offense if there’s any.
Made In Hawaii and Ralph, sorry for my choice of words but this guy really insulted me and question my intelligence. I have come a LONG way with my writing skills as I try with every word to communicate my fond feelings to you folks and my experiences along the way to communicate in an objective and subjective manner.
I don’t claim to be a pulitzer prize winner or professor of the english grammer BUT what I really like to do in writing to you folks is my appreciation and gratitude for your support over the years, talking Hawaii or collegiate athletics and meet some good Hawaiian folks during the process as I enjoy everyone on this blog regardless how they express themselves.
My apologies once again for my arrogant remarks BUT this guy showed no respect and really need to check himself before he check others.
Thank you both for your positive remarks !

Going to say good night as typing this long has been really good for me as I enjoyed the many posts and reading the intelligent remarks from all of you that I hold in the highest regards !
Be well and MAHALO for your GREATNESS !
Hola Tsaiko peeps.
to deeplurker – if you don’t like it, don’t read it.
to RainbowCliff – agree 808% with BG808, keep posting.
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,
#190 is known as a “kiss and a kick” comment. This characteristic is commonly found among persons who cannot decide or who are evasive (usually politicians). I did learn in 8th grade typing class that capitalization is done by holding down the shift key with either small finger on a QWERTY key board while striking the desired letter key. This makes the grammar less “confusing”!??
WOW BleedGreen808 !
Love the esp as I saw your post and had to apologize to you before you got started here as it was really out of character for me to say those arrogant statements !
Thank you always for your loyal support to Hawaii and the WONDERFUL spirit you leave to others as I know the more humble you are the more gifts you will receive as I would not have the life that I have with out giving and helping others along the way as I know it is always better to give then it is to receive as God LOVES a cheerful giver !
Good Night !
I have to say that I share Garret’s concerns about who the real WR coach will be. We can’t afford a compliance violation.
Jm2375 & Annoddah Dave: Thank you for your positive remarks as I really ‘LOVE’ you good folks and appreciate how you stand up for wrong against right !
I never had anyone disrespect my writing thoughts as I really make sure before I submit comment that my spelling is correct, punctuation is in good standard and that my statement of purpose is clear and legible.
Always a pleasure as when I come down during Melekelekemaka Time I will finally meet you as with the many local bloggers who I have never met but looking forward to the auspicious occasion !

RainbowCliff on #132,
Love you right back, bruddah! I miss your larger-than-life warmth & personality. I also have mourned the loss of Ms. Kaina who was a mentor, confidante and friend to me as well. Taking her classes were memorable & when I took her Social Dance class, it literally changed my life. You & I are among the fortunate ones whose lives were impacted by knowing her.
Here is the Fox sports announcement that UH’s game against Colorado will be televised by Fox College Sports. I didn’t realize that UH will be Colorado’s first home game of the season–their first 2 games are road games.

better late than never: deeplurker as everyone has the right to express their opinions, one also should use good judgement, a public forum such as this blog is really not the place to point out your opinion of other people, granted you have that right to do so but then you have to be prepared for others opinion of you, which you should be able to tell from the response you have gotten. Now as far as Cliff is concerned, I don’t care how he writes or spells or whatever, he has shown over the years to be one of the positive persons I have ever met. I feels he brings a full plate to the table(ahhh food), also he is one of a few past athletes that continues to support UH and Hawaii not only in money but with action. So my hats off to you Cliff an I thank you for your loyalty an care for the state of Hawaii and your Alma mater, and you too big guy.
I need my fill of Garrett posts.

What’s the “out of compliance” issue Garret is alluding to in his comment? If that is such an obvious infraction, I cannot believe Mac and JD cannot see it as such or would choose to simply ignore the fact that the cation may border on being out of compliance.
I know that it’s two years since Mac has taken the ships helm. It’s time we stopped second guessing and allowed him the freedom to “do his thing”. It’s then up to JD to either accept or dismiss his results and act accordingly, for the betterment of the institution.
I for one, have not been an enthusiastic supporter of how things have unfolded, but Mac was given the job and I’d like to be proven wrong. BTW, I backed Von Appen when he was selected and sat through all of those games, all of them! Hated the results, expected better and thank goodness Hugh saw his choice was wrong and got JJ.
There comes a time when you need to be a fan.
Good Morning and Happy Aloha Friday Tsaikos! Have a good and safe weekend. It’s gonna be crazy in Spokane this weekend. It’s Hoopfest weekend. The largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world. Over 6400 teams.
Hopefully Mack hires Dick Tomey for the wide receiver coach. Mack needs a mentor to teach him how to be a head coach. Remember the year that Mack Brown brought Dick Tomey here to Texas as a consultant. The Longhorns won the National championship that year. Brown said that he learned quite a bit from Tomey.
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂

In addition to the thousands of youngsters he has touched over the years in inner city LA, Cliff is one of the few posters to have created a deep personal bond with many of us here, even though he lives across the Pacific.
We get what he says.
Best of all, we know his heart.
Condolences to Shauna and family.

Good Aloha Friday morning, gang!
I believe a student manager (i.e., Lelie) can not coach. That might be an NCAA infraction.
Hope everyone picks Mouse’s brain to learn as much as possible about the Run ‘n Shoot. That’s exciting football!

… If Mack wants to hire Tomey, he can hire him as a consultant as you say, but not as an on-field coach. An on-field coach is needed to coach the wide receivers. Tomey ain’t no RnS wide receivers coach.
I don’t think that it wiil happen; ther are EGOS involved here.
Go Warriors!

Howzit Everybody,
#241 I think you bring up a good suggestion on bringing in Coach Tomey as a consultant but I also agree with ai-eee-soos that Dick Tomey is no run-and-shoot wide receivers coach.
I wrote the following last night before any other comments were posted and held it back because I was concerned that I might be seen as too snarky. However, I see that I am not alone.
Deep Lurker:
I’d feel more comfortable with your comments if you practiced what you preach in #190. The last time I looked, standard written English includes capitalizing the first letter of the first word in each sentence as well as proper names along with the second person singular pronoun I. There are more than 20 such errors in your post.
Furthermore, you might consider taking a basic writing class yourself so as to learn what a paragraph is and how it is used to clarify the writer’s ideas.
A brief review of basic punctuation rules would also be of benefit in improving your communications skills.
Don’t get me wrong – I am not challenging your right to make your comments; I am just pointing out that you shouldn’t be going after someone when you also have significant deficits.
And, yes, I’m a professional writer and a former high school & college English teacher & book editor & journalist & media relations person so I do know what I writing about.

You have to read into what went on when JJ was coach. While the Lee brothers were involved in evaluation of players, they were not allowed to go after players. JJ only allowed certain coaches to make contact with potential recruits. Things changed with Coach Mack. Remember when he went to Kahuku? he took Cal Lee with him. Remember who we got after it was all but concluded they were going to the mainland?
#255 kama krab Eh why you make like dat? Da pigeons taste really ono wen stay deep fry da buggah or even baked, OH try wait you not talking bout da bridie kine, soooo sorry, I stay all confused

I remember when a teacher scolded me for using pidgin.
Teacher: Excuse me Timmy, but where’s your grammar?!
Me: My Tutu’s at home, taking a nap or talking to the cats.

Good one DPK
I am so sorry for throwing the blog off with this pidgin stuff but I just had to get that off my chest. But I gotta say, you guys just “crack me up” as my two-year-old would say.
