If USC can’t play 13 games this coming season due to NCAA sanctions, why is it assumed the UH game is its “13th” game? Why not have them give up one of their home games against Virginia or Notre Dame? Make them pay off one of those teams to cancel AND lose revenue from no home game. It will also allow Virignia/ND another home game to make some money.

I still can’t imagine the NCAA forcing the game to be canceled. I imagine the intent was so that USC would not play in a Pac-10 (16?) championship game.

The NCAA cannot tell USC which game to cancel. The home games make USC probably about $6 million or so, at a time where they will lose a lot of other revenue (bowl money, ncaa tournament money, etc.). Why would they want to cancel a home game?
What I would do is tell USC that if they want to get out of this season’s game, then they own *2* games at Aloha Stadium in the near future. So, instead of UH playing at USC in 2012, have USC play at Aloha Stadium in 2012 and then UH will set up another home-and-home with USC in the near future.
So, USC would lose the home game against UH in 2012, UH would get an extra home game in 2012, and UH would get another home-and-home deal with USC in the future.

If USC decides quickly enough to appeal the NCAA sanctions, they could delay the start of their punishment until the 2011 season. Then they would be able to play the 2010 season opener at Aloha Stadium. The 2012 game against USC is at USC, so the Hawaii exception will not come into play.

But if USC had to cut a game, it would cut the UH game because it would lose millions by cutting a home game. And because of the NCAA’s ruling, I’m not so sure USC would have to pay a cancellation fee.

What’s USC’s latest position regarding that game?
UH should try to have this matter resolved ASAP. If the NCAA doesn’t want USC to play a 13th game, they should stipulate which game. If UH loses money on this matter, they should have some recourse with the NCAA. It shouldn’t be UH’s problem. The onus is on the NCAA and USC here, right?

I’m surprised some people calling into the radio are only now admitting that they agree that all these conference moves are being influenced by television money and ONLY that.
I mean the DUMBEST thing to believe in all of this is that athletics in it’s purest form is the reason or one of the reasons for these conference shifts.

It’s funny, in listening to JD talk about the big ten network and the others that are trying to set up their own networks, that they only focus on football and most of the other sports are left out and not televised. But yet our own TV contract with KFVE has better college coverage than most. At least we get coverage of football, basketball, baseball, softball volleyball both mens and womens.

Another interesting note about all the conference shake ups…especially among the BCS conferences is that those conference reps and school presidents (i.e. SEC, Big 10, Pac 10) always scream that one of the reasons to keep the present bowl system and not go to a bowl playoff system is the traditions of the bowls. Well, heck, where is the tradition in having a Pac 16 with half the teams nowhere near the Pacific?? And what about the Big 10 actually having 12 teams?? MWHAHAHAHAHAHA

If I was wearing a toejam’s hat and had to make a decision on what game to cancel…the last one I would cancel is Notre Dame. especially if its a home game. There is a heck of a lot of tradition between the 2 teams and its a HUGE tv draw.
As far as Virginia I would only keep it because it makes money being a home game…hard to pass up $5 million or so.
I hate to say it but from a USC perspective Hawaii doesn’t offer big money or a long storied rivalry that fans across the nation love to watch.
I do hope they don’t cancel this game though. I see it as the highlight of our season and something a lot of Hawaii people are looking forward to!
Can the NCAA impose a sanction that will force USC to cancel a home game? If they could do that things would be so much simpler =) haha.

Interesting conversation with JD this morning on B. Curren show. He doesn’t think UH-USC game will be canceled.
1. Contract was signed a decade ago, before violations.
2. USC is appealing ban, might not be heard until Sept. or Nov.
3. Someone was saying the game wouldn’t be on tv, but I haven’t seen that confirmed.

On Curren’s show he said that all these presidents when they meet in that general assembly conference thing talk about how bad this “arms race” is in college ball and how they need change…yet the moment they get a chance to make an extra million here and there they start fighting tooth and nail.

Colorado is going to the PAC 10 from the BIG 12..

So, the BIG 12 needs 2 more teams or a name change…

The pac10 should throw out their bs-profile requirements and consider UH so they can show on national tv the beautiful beaches, etc., of their new member and how nice it would be for the pac10 fans to visit and relax in the Hawaiian sunshine enjoying maitais, etc.
Please read Ferd’s column today – what he writes and the quotes from the late Governor Jack Burns he cites are what I’ve been saying here for the past two and a half years or more. The ties between the academic and the athletic greatness of any institution of higher learning are incredibly strong.
I know that some folks here tend to think that there’s is a lot of opposition from faculty & staff directed towards intercollegiate athletic programs, but this is not true. Wimming teams in all sports bring in outside money for research as well as top notch students in both undergraduate & graduate programs.
Why this perception continues to hang around has to do with competing & conflicting demands for funding. Do we build a chemistry building or a new gym? Do we hire clerical assistants in the Sociology Department or the Athletics Department?
The key to a win-win situation is a combination of strengthening alumni financial commitments, creating a strong community support base which in turn provides elected officials support for investing in the university as a whole, and, of course, expanding corporate partnerships.
These have been happening under the Donovan/Hinshaw leadership; however, what has caught just about everyone off-guard – even in the makai campus – has been the speed & quickness of the conference re-alignments – not to mention the time of year.
MIH…well, the jury is still out with Texas…according to some ESPN “sources” additional teams from the Big 12 were/are being courted considered by the Pac 10 which would then divide up the sixteen team conference into East and West divisions. The Big Ten was supposedly considering raiding the Big East. If that were to happen, the possibility of the Big East raiding some other conference exists. Talk has also been made of the SEC expanding.
But what you’ve stated for the most part is where things stand now…subject to change…LOL
UH will not get a Pac 10/16/whatever invite. If that conference was really interested in adding UH, it would have happened already.
Intresting listening to Jim Donavan this morning. He said Hawaii was never offered an MWC invitation back in 1996, but Hugh Yoshida tried to convince the MWC to take Hawaii if they reinstituted the travel subsidies, but MWC presidents voted 4-4 for expansion at the time, so Hawaii was left out. Donavan said he thought Hawaii would have been in the MWC today if the travel subsidies were still in place back then.
The creastino of the MWC was considered a really big betrayal and much of it, as I remember, was done in secrecy until the last minute.
If and only if travel costs remains the biggest factor from us getting into the MWC (should there be space) does anyone have an idea of what the cost will be for the subsidies?
has there been any indication by either the department or the administration that we are open to footing that bill amongst the budget cuts that will probably be around for the next few years?
J.D. also brought up another good point that alot of USC boosters already bought their plane tickets and hotel rooms here, they would stand to lose that money,and they would sue
One of the reasons Doc is that the people at the upper campus that do not like sports in general are vocal about it an like the old saying the “squeaky wheel gets the grease” so they get in the news. If in fact the upper campus personnel are in favor of the sports program, then they need to speak out in favor of it be visible as a fan.
Maybe what we need is a faculty & staff only section at the stadium and stan’s, lets see if they get filled up with supporting faculty????????????

I hope the NCAA will see that the cancellation of the UH-USC game will hurt UH financially much much more than penalize USC–and allow the game in this instance. I hope for a lot of other stuff too..like hit the megabucks. 😐
…but I agree that Hawaii is not necessarily the 13th game that should be dropped, but that would take a lot of legal arguments. Since contracts are signed for the game, maybe the NCAA can specify that the last signed game contract by USC be dropped. (Hope it wasn’t us).

Sadly, if USC were to drop a game, it would be Hawaii. That is the most expensive and in the most favorable position(scheduling wise) to cut.

morning my tsaiko family, very bright and humid monday it is. much news about realignment and the picture of NCAA fball. as the weeks progress, I hope that UH will be in the picture determining what course is best before its to late. my faith is in JD and not benson (track record poor)plus his blue smurf left him holding the bag.
update from yesterday’s bb meeting it was decided to go ahead with the planning and the event. we considered the comments but decided it was best to continue. the next meeting is scheduled for june 27. james will notify the members of place and if interested heading up a committee.

Big 12’s TV pitch could save conference, stop expansion

How real is the possibility that the Big 12 — on its deathbed over the weekend as it bled member schools to the Pac-10 and Big Ten and teetered with the prospects of Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State all about to bolt as well — now is appearing to be able to not only survive, but throw a major wrench in the national wave of conference expansion?
One highly placed source at a Big 12 school that has direct knowledge of the negotiations between league commissioner Dan Beebe and school presidents now puts the probability of the Big 12 continuing on with 10 members at 70/30 yes — just days after he put the same probability at 30/70 against.
“I think there’s a 70 percent chance of the Big 12 surviving,” the official said.
Internet reports have been firing back and forth all day — one morning report had the Big 12’s survival back on the table, followed by another saying its demise was “imminent” — but here’s what we are being told:
The big snag in the Texas/Tech/OU/OSU move to the Pac-10 appears to be Texas’ desire to create its own television network; the Pac-10 reportedly did not want a Longhorn Network in the mix, something with Texas insisted upon.
Earlier reports today had all 10 surviving Big 12 member schools getting together to discuss the issue today. If that’s true, then it’s on the presidential level. One Big 12 athletic director said there was no conference call among Big 12 athletic directors scheduled.
Texas and Texas Tech regents will meet Tuesday to discuss expansion. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State regents will do likewise on Wednesday.
Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott was in Austin overnight, and met with Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds this morning.
Like these things usually do, it’ll come down to money.
Specifically, TV money.
If the Big 12’s reported TV deal is accepted by Texas, then it looks like the conference will continue. Had the Pac-10, which is expected to start its own TV network, also allowed Texas to still run its own — like the SEC does with its member schools — then maybe that 16-team super conference would have happened as early as Tuesday.
One Big 12 athletic director is telling The New York Times that the Big 12’s TV pitch has been crucial in this late-inning save scenario.
When reached on his cellphone Monday afternoon, Beebe was asked if there was optimism for the league’s future. “We’ll keep going,” he told the NYT, before saying he could not speak anymore.
The Big 12 athletic director said Beebe’s work with the television side has been critical to holding the league together.
“That’s really what Dan Beebe has been able to accomplish working with our partners,” he said of the difference from the outlook of 48 hours ago. “Improved relationship allowed for this to happen.”

Baseball? Basketball? What’s going on? What sort of event?
Pomai – I can tell you that within 50 feet of our women’s volleyball seats in any direction in The Stan there are at least 100 current and former faculty members & their spouses. I’ve run into many faculty at baseball, softball, men’s volleyball, and even the basketball games as well. Too many people at Aloha Stadium to keep track of, but I’m sure that a lot of faculty attend those games as well.
As for the negative comments, could you please post them here. I cannot remember reading anything remotely negative about the programs – the coaches, yes – but not the programs themselves.
Have you taken the time to call or write these individuals to invite them to attend a game or match with you so that they can see for themselves how these student athletes are contributing to UH’s overall reputation?

All I can say is, this is way to crazy to follow already. I just hope when the dust settles that we will still be able to call UH a D-1 football program.
And at this point in the game all we can do is wait and see. The way things are going though, UH and the WAC may have something to work with in the next couple of months. Just hoping and praying.

Hawaii had to wait a year to get Majam on the field after an injury erased what was to be her debut season in 2009. That patience paid off in a big way. Majam led the nation with 30 home runs. Whether putting the ball over the fence or waiting out a walk, she showed time and again during the postseason that she can get it done against any level of competition. With that power and a .519 on-base percentage, she’s the ultimate leadoff hitter.

If the ESPN Radio report is true that the Big 12 has been offered a TV deal of $17 million per school per year for 18 years, plus every school can make their own TV deals (so, Texas can start their own network and every school can make their own TV deals like K5 covers UH), then the Big 12 might survive. Wow, that is a LOT of TV money for a conference that won’t even have a conference title game to include in the TV package.

Must agree that Jim D is the correct individual for the UHAD position – only wish that he was the AD instead of “the fumbler” whose many decisons still haunts UAHD today and unfortunately points into the future. Damn, who was the Pres that wanted the Olympic flash? He was so fast that we could not see what he did to make UH better including fund raising!!!!!!!!!! An Austin sports radio station posted on Twitter that BYU and Air Force were invited to get the Big 12 to 12 teams. However, they posted a retraction later. If the Big 12 would take BYU and Air Force, and the Pac-10 takes Utah, that could create enough momentum for a MWC/WAC merger. Half the WAC could be left out, possibly more if they add some C-USA teams (like Houston).
It has been confirmed multiple times before that the Big 12 considered inviting BYU in the past, and both BYU and Air Force were rumored to be replacements if the Big 12 lost Colorado as expected.
The thing is, if BYU, Air Force, and Utah stay in the MWC for 2 more seasons (Colorado is staying in the Big 12 for 2 more seasons so Utah might be doing the same), then *all* of their BCS points will count for the MWC. That means that the MWC could become an AQ conference thanks to their BCS points…just in time for the MWC to invite other schools to fill their openings.
Once you participate in a sport at UH and graduate all other student athletes that have done the same became teammates.
All of the Letterwinners that I contact (or have contacted) through the years have that perspective.

I don’t remember too much about Dobelle. A lot of people didn’t like him, I guess. I remember him for his “Common Sense” rule… which cut through a lot of red tape. I remember him getting “Les Murakami Stadium” named after Les before he passed, because it was “the right thing to do”. I wonder what he would say today? 😕
USC and Hawaii signed a contract 10 years ago…I wonder how long ago ND signed a contract with USC. I wouldnt be surprise if these contracts between the 2 schools go back like 15-20 years or more.
Dallas Morning News reports that Texas will stay in the Big 12 and the schools have agreed on the basic terms of the team. My dream would be for them to take 2 schools from the MWC and force the MWC to invite a bunch of teams.
By the way, Chip Brown reports that *Arkansas* has contacted the Big 12 about their interest in rejoining their SWC schools. If the Big 12 matches or exceeds the SEC’s TV money, it is a possibility. That would be an amazing addition for the Big 12!
That would be a really good idea. At least that way we will only have to win 6 wins to get into the Hawaii Bowl since we will technically have 12 games.
Good Afternoon Tsaiko Nation: It has been reported from 710 Espn Los Angeles that the USC game vs. Hawaii in September is still “ON” !
710 AM is the home radio for the Trojans and I listen to it daily as their promotional spot for the first USC game has Hawaii still playing the Trojans with no other games being canceled. Two of my USC alumni tennis friends has paid for their Island package deal as Trojan alumni and supporters are looking forward to waikiki, welcoming lei’s and spending plenty of “KALA” !
All is quiet here in USC land with no news of players transfering as even Lane Kiffin is not giving no interviews as his focus is to keep his team together and ensure recruits that the men of Troy will be on top once again. With the BIG 12 at this point trying to keep their conference in tack as the anticipation of Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and possibly Texas AM has not CONFIRM that they will be joining the Pac 10 as all this “woop dee do” of Pac 16 is only Pac 11 with Colorado only being the new team to join the Conference.
When further news come forth I will update BUT at this point USC is coming !

The Pac-10 Commissioner has *confirmed* that Texas has turned down the Pac-10. That means that Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M have also turned down the Pac-10.
Look for Utah to be the 12th Pac-10 team.
Report out of Salt Lake City that Utah will be going to the Pac-12.
USC has BIG ALUMNI here in Los Angeles especially the South Bay area as Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, Palos Verdes and Laguna Niguel is swarming with Trojans.
On their website they have advertise the game vs. Hawaii prior to the NCAA penalties and has “SOLD” several package deals that include round trip air fare, hotel accomodations, several tailgate receptions around the Island and tickets to see the game !
USC folks LOVE the Islands as they bring their children, relatives and friends to have a GREAT time of polynesian hospitality and enjoy your beautiful beaches and wonderful scenery !
This game is ON as really USC needs the rest and relaxation to get away from the sanctions and penalties that the NCAA has put against them as Trojan Alumni LOVES to drink as they don’t go no where with out their cocktails and apple Martinis !

This is off topic, but I came across a Utah State article that said the school was interested in acquiring Jeramiah Masoli. Given his off-field behavior problems and subsequent termination, I was wondering what everyone thought if UH considered signing him. Mind you, Masoli has one year of eligibility and would have to sit out a year (transfer rule).

If the Big 12 added Arkansas, my best guess for the final team would be BYU, Louisville, or Memphis. But I doubt that Arkansas would leave without the Big 12 having a solid TV contract…right now there is a lot of talk, the numbers have to be on paper before things are solid. But if Fox will really put down a 18-year, $17 million per school per year contract, that matches the SEC’s money.
When Arkansas left for the SEC, they were blackballed from playing Texas for a long time…and their recruiting really took a hit since they used to get a lot of Texas recruits when they were in the SWC.
If USC appeals and can delay the start of any of the punishments, then they can probably play the 2010 game at Aloha Stadium. That would be best for UH…that monetary hit ($1-2 million) would be hard to absorb!
It is too bad that conference expansion didn’t occur when UH was coming off some of their better seasons. For example, BCS Guru ran the numbers for the just-completed BCS evaluation period and UH was #37 in the country! Only BSU was ahead of UH in the WAC and only TCU, BYU, and Utah were ahead of UH in the MWC.
If UH had that strong of a BCS score now, adding BSU and UH would probably get the MWC past the requirement to become an AQ conference. So, the MWC would have come calling for UH.
Unfortunately, that evaluation period was for 2006/2007/2008/2009, and the evaluation period that counts now are 2008/2009/2010/2011…and UH earned a lot more BCS points in the two years that no longer count for the BCS.
This article doesn’t make sense to me, but I’m passing it along since it would be of interest to some people. Why would the Big 12 invite SMU and Houston? Texas already owns both TV markets.
If the Big 12 commissioner wanted to really upset the Pac-10 commissioner, he should invite Utah to the Big 12 now…
If Utah goes to the Pac-10 as rumored, that would leave the MWC with a big void as they needed to remain intact and with the addition of BSU push them forward for BCS automatic consideration.

It would be interesting to know if there is a “drop dead” date by which NCAA needs to impose specific sanctions against USC. I understand that USC is going to contest some of the penalties, but is there an end-date on that? And if so, how would that end-date match up with Sept. 2?
I am hoping that behind the scenes there has been correspondence to NCAA saying that Hawaii, as an innocent but definitely an affected party, needs to know how to move forward re: the Sept. 2 game. As RainbowCliff has pointed out, consumers are already buying air tickets and hotel room stays. If these are bought as packages, there may be a cancellation cost — or the vendor may have to take the hit. So in addition to the impact on UH and on Oahu fans, there is an impact on fans from other islands and the mainland. (And the uncertainty cannot be a positive contribution.)

Ho Brah this is some crazy stuff. It looks like Hawaii dodged the bullet this time but I gotta agree with everyone else, the football team has to win and win big the next couple of years to even see the daylight the next time this whole thing goes crazy again.
That is why I say, this is the money year for Coach Mack and the boyz. A losing season will pretty much seal the fate of the football program and the fate of Coach Mack cause in 2011 he will be a lame duck.

ESPN Dallas reports that ESPN outbid Fox–it was reported earlier today that Fox offered an 18-year $17 million per school TV deal. Now, ESPN has apparently offered $17 million for 7 of the Big 12, $20 million for A&M/Oklahoma, and $25 million for Texas.
ESPN’s offer is apparently for a 10-team conference only, so the Big 12 might stay at 10 teams. If the bidding war escalates, there is no way the Big 12 will break up now. If the Big 12 stays at 10 teams, the MWC will be spared and could get AQ status in 2012…since *all* of Utah’s BCS points will count for the MWC.
If the Big 12 doesn’t add any teams, it looks like the BCS system will stay in place…with 1 more member of an AQ conference (Utah) and the MWC passing 2 of 3 of the AQ requirements for 2012.
kama krab is correct that UH needs to win big. The current BCS evaluation period is 2008/2009/2010/2011 and there is no way that UH will have a high enough computer number over that 4-year period to wow conference like BSU did. However, a *new* BCS evaluation period starts this season and runs from 2010/2011/2012/2013. If UH does well in 2010 and 2011, they might be attractive to a conference in 2012 and beyond when the next round of dominoes falls.
There is a report of Utah’s rivals site that Utah has already notified the MWC that they are leaving.

I think it’s great that Utah will go to the PAC-##. Now I’m keeping my fingers crossed that TCU and BYU leave as well for the BIG-12. That shouldn’t bother those Boise St. folks though. They’re probably accustomed to watching the pretty girls walk out of a party as soon as they get there. 🙂
AUSTIN, Texas — Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott says Texas has turned down an invitation to leave the Big 12 and join his conference.
In an e-mail to The Associated Press, Scott confirms that Texas has rejected the Pac-10’s offer.

All this maneuvering seems to have been a lot of smoke and mirrors to get some teams to jump and then decide what needs to be done to squash the MWC’s hopes for BCS admission. Utah leaves.. but Boise fills that void.. somewhat.. but with UTAH leaving, it’s every man for himself and there is nothing to keep TCU or BYU from leaving if the right offer (Big 12) comes. Hmm…..
If the Big 12 doesn’t add two teams.. do they become the Big 10, and the Big 10, because they have 12 teams, become the BIG 12? If the BIG 10 adds two for their namesake.. can we have two BIG 12 conferences with 4 divisions of 6.

Dumb question, but where does ESPN get all the $$$ to “pay-off” teams? Is it from the fees from “ads” during a game? What if xyz companies decide to reduce their advertising budget? ESPN “eats” the cost?
Earlier, someone suggested an Asian-Pacific Conference with teams from Hawaii, Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Phillippines, Australia, New Zealand, etc. Minimum of 2 top ranked schools from each country to get pass NCAA admission standards. This will avoid international students from having to meet UH admission standards, but if a student/athlete wants to attend UH, why not? If UH takes the lead, can they request assistance from the US Dept of State through its embassies?
What sports would be involved? Basketball, baseball, softball, track & field, volleyball, gymnastics, and swimming/diving? Would it be necessary to be sanctioned by the NCAA? If this happens, what USA school would be interested in participating in tournaments at their expense? Can you see the PAC 10 or whatever wanting to get in the action as a way to test their athletes against the best from the Pacific Basin? Future Olympic athletes?
Speaking of sports, what is the minimum requirement (# of schools) in a “recognized” sport for Bosie St to gain points in the WAC for the President’s Cup? I’m thinking of “rodeo” for which they placed 1st?? UH men’s VB team is “punished” because they do not participate in the WAC. Is UH the only school with men’s VB in the WAC?

ESPN and Fox get money from the cable and satellite companies that carry them. They also get money from the commercials shown during games–the more people that watch the games, the more they get from the commercials.
Each time ESPN or Fox get the rights to something, that makes their channels more valuable and results in an increase in subscriber fees. If you subscribe to Oceanic, about $5 of your bill goes straight to ESPN.
The Big 10 Network gets about $1 from every cable or satellite TV subscriber in the states where they have a team, and about 10 cents per subscriber in other states. They get about 3x more than that from the commercials shown on their network.
Garret, about your payoff for cable TV, why doesn’t UH show our sports world wide with the visitors industries picking up most of the tab to promote Hawaii with commercials of Hawaii, hotle, restaurants, places to visit, etc. is it too simple?

Not only are the Big 12 teams going to get a HUGE TV contract, they get a signing bonus. If you add that to the exit fees from Nebraska or Colorado…then they will be getting a lot of extra money during this difficult financial time.

I think people in Texas will sign up for the network…people are hardcore about the Longhorns there.
Papajoe2 the Hawaii visitors industry would get more bang for their buck by buying network time featuring Hawaii and its allure. Who would watch a team that finished 7-7 and lost to ND in a blow out, and drop even lower to 6-7 and not qualify for the Sheraton Bowl. Without an audience, the Hawaii Visitors Bureau would be spending “big bucks” for nothing. UH has to win and win to galvanize the State like the year of the Sugar Bowl and do it year afater year. It’s like some of the oldies I listen to, one hit wonder, then out of sight and out of mind.
I believe there were somewhat less than 1800 parking passes available in the reverse auction.
Parking fee for the games were $5 each (I think).
So. 1800 x $5 = $9000 per game
For 7 games: $9000 x 7 = $63000 for the season.
$476k is much much better.
I think the big 10 is counting on Nebraska fervid fans to subscibe to their cable, wouldn’t be surprised if they hit the 90+ percentile level.
Finish the Ching complex with enclosure, then rent it out-rental income, parking revenue, & concessions. Some of the money will filter to the UHAD. Na Wahine soccer on campus, free to UH students but admission charge to everyone else, again an additional source of income. Every little bit helps the UHAD.

Colorado *and* Utah apparently will get to be in the half of the Pac-12 that gets to play USC and UCLA. That means that the Oregon, Washington, and Bay Area schools won’t play in LA that often.
It seems that some schools have long memories and it is not going to be “let the past be bygone”. Arkansas shafted the SWC and now it wants back in, but no one in Texas is going to forgive them. Maybe somewhere along the line TCU has been a thorn to UT and AM, so their name is neva mentioned. Might not be important to most, but sometime back in time, a bunch of “hawaii nisei” saved a lot of texans (called the lost battalion) from getting captured or killed. Wonder how many of these Texans still thank Hawaii for their son’s return to Texas.
I think I’m numb from all this. Ralph pinch me…get the blood circulating or something. I’m on the edge. Jason! Let this be a remainder that if you snooze you lose. It is time for not only the University of Hawaii to step up, it is also time for the Legislature, City and County, Hawaii Tourism Board, the Major of all Counties, the Governor, and last but not least the people of Hawaii to step up and do all they can do to make The Unversity of Hawaii the best it can be.
Right now it’s the all in or go home time. Hopefully there are people out there that rather be out in force doing all they can do for the school rather than staying home and typing on there computer stating the obvious. I hope we have people out there like Garret, Stretch, Kazz, Kekoa, and others who are willing to make some financial sacrifices to see that UH is in the best position possible. It will take all us little people to make UH great and I know that we can do it. Whether it be buying season tickets or giving the bucks to Koa Anuenue and Na Koa, we can all make a difference. Just gotta want to.

Sorry for the tutorial above but just getting small kine nutz with all this realignment stuff going on. Come September 2nd, all that realignment takes a backseat and it is time to butt heads on the feild. There we will see what will become of the 2010 Warriors. There we will see if the Warriors and there coaches are ready for the big time, ready to play with the big boys, ready stuff one up the you know whats of the BCS. September 2nd will tell all of Hawaii whether the University of Hawaii is ready for the big time or ready to fold it’s tent come 5-10 years from now.
It’s up to the Warriors of Manoa to show there metal to the rest of the nation. Beat the beaten dragon and prosperity will follow, get eaten by the hungry dragon and the rest is history.

i guess i didn’t make my comments clear. i’m talking about getting a University of Hawaii channel on cable, like the travel channel, HGTV, or even the Big 10 channel. the hotels in Hawaii have a channel that promotes their hotel and concessions within the hotel and also around the islands. if we made a UH channel and play ALL sports on this channel and also promote UH’s education capabilities and also the state, it could do wonders for UH and the state. i’m sure the people in China don’t care about UH’s losing football program, but might be interested in swimming, volleyball, basketball, etc., yet might watch football for the heck of it. even American visitors or workers in foreign countries that don’t have football, might spark their interest. I’m sure if any of the Tsaikos were working abroad, they wouldn’t mind tuning in. the sports portion could be repeated daily with various different sports and also offer older dated sports and games. just run it daily or even X amount of hours a day, but get the message out in the world that we, at the University of Hawaii and the state of Hawaii exist. Jim Leahy doesn’t have to do all the games. we could use students that are interested in broadcast journalism produce, write and whatever it takes to put this on with the smaller sports.

I have to believe the number of universities that have their own channel are few due to costs. I don’t believe the Big Ten schools have their own individual channels. As I recall UH is one of the few schools that offers their own PPV channel. If there was money to be made K5 would have pursued this awhile ago. After all we can’t even fill Aloha Stadium or the Stan Sheriff Arena on a regular basis.
Whitey, no, no vision, no thinking out of the box. You got an email from ISU, I got mine from K State, but we don’t hear a peep from any WAC teams, especially UH. We think they are working behind closed doors, or they want us to think that they are working the system behind the scene, but we’ll never know we’ll we. Like Garret and others have posted, UH has got to win this year and years to come to establish a winning identity. Leave the “one hit wonders” to the music industry, we need to be in bowls every year and WAC champs most of the time.

It is hard to fill Aloha stadium and the Stanley without a winning tradition. Even the Colt years the Stadium wasn’t filled to capacity, why, probably the fans weren’t ready or expecting such a successful year. I believe Colt had a great two year run, Timmy Chang and Rolo had some success, especially Rolo’s last 5 games. But those runs come in spurts, we need to sustain a winning role in the WAC. Post Colt, we are 13-14, and hoping for the best this upcoming season without assurances of a lot of success-but there is hope.

last season while the beast was still at weber state, we played wyoming one week before Texas was coming to town….how nutz are Texas fans?
many couldn’t get ‘good seats’ for the game so they did the next best thing…they bought season tickets for Wyoming games so they could enjoy their 1 game……
the hotel right next to the stadium is Wyoming’s ‘home’ hotel for pregame stay, meals and meetings…..TEXAS bought the entire hotel for 2 nights for their team and all the boosters….so the ‘home’ team, wyoming had to go 15 miles out of town for their ‘pregame’ activities.
the question from a Longhorn fanatic is ‘don’t ask me why i am a Longhorn fan, the question is why AREN’T you a Longhorn fan?……

I watched Kekaula’s piece on Vinnie, good luck to the youngman. Also noticed the outfield wall filled with advertisements, layered. Come on McNamara, I’ve seen the same banners at the Stanley, Les’s and sb field for years. Find additional space, put up a signage or banner. In the Les, add another row of ads in back of the fence where there is a walk way when the fence was moved in. I wonder if the outdoor circle has a ruling on ads visible from the street. UHAD needs more income, think out of the box and go get it-hard work but somebody got to do it. Usually External A.D. job description fits this model.

OldDriver, on Oceanic cable channel 1248, there is a HBG10 channel which is the Big 10 channel. i have no idea what kind of deal that they have with the cable companies but it is a premium channel and has all kinds of different Big 10 sports and teams within the Big 10. is this something similar to what Garret was referring by Texas wanting to have their own cable rights? to does anyone know when the contract with K5 expires? we must start the ball rolling now to make this happen in the future. having our own UH channel will not happen overnight. something of this magnitude will take time. its starts with an idea, then getting the right people to get the right people to make this happen. i’m sure K5 and Oceanic Cablevision would be very interested in looking at what the University offers in this venture. they may even have their own ideas of making this happen. what if the PAC 10 (11,or 12) or Big 10 or even Texas goes forward with something like this throughout the orient or the world? i’m saying that the mystique of Hawaii may lure many eyes from other countries and money for sponsorships and exibitions. why not take advantage of this while we can. lets not wait for somebody else to do it. do we even realize that most foreign countries has more than 1 soccer channel running 24 hours a day? a friend of mine worked in Turkey for a few months. he told me that they have a few soccer channels running 24 hours a day. do we know that Belgium has a professional baseball league? what about the European leagues in basketball and the professional volleyball leagues in Europe in both men and women? swimming and diving in China and Japan? you bet! if we can telephone anyone throughout the world or connect on the internet throughout the world, i’m sure we can telecast too. it may cost a whole lot of money, but may be worth it too.
Wyoming has only one hotel near the stadium in Laramie. 🙂 Luckily I never went there to visit, made it to Cheyenne one snowy evening. I asked the hotel gal what is there for us to do on Sunday because the highway patrol advisory was to keep off the highway to Boulder, Co., she told us there’s nothing to do or see, maybe go to church. Next morning we followed an 18 wheeler hoping that it would clear a path for us to Boulder.

Turner TV, CNN, TBS out of Georgia, he televised on cable the Braves and Hawks games, made people aware of the franchises, got fans to come to the ball game and those that didn’t make it, they paid for cable view.

Just read your post about Wyoming. AnnoddahLiz said the same thing about being in Cheyenne, WY in the past couple of days. The young people she spoke to said there was nothing to do there. bwahahahaha

Just to let folks know that there are indeed intensive discussions about a Pacific Rim multi-sports venue called Aloha Stadium which will include both soccer and rugby as well as “American” sports. All of these will be incorporated into Transit-Oriented Development – indirectly. Most of the TOD will directly benefit local folks, but it is anticipated that Aloha Stadium will be featuring a wide variety of sporting activities approximately 300 days or nights each year by 2022 or thereabouts.
This will have a major impact on the state’s overall economic development. It may also speed up moving the rail system into Waikiki as well.
Is this a done deal? No, of course not, but at least people with clout and cash are talking to each other.
What happens starting September 2 will have a major impact on the outcome of these discussions.

the rule is that student require at least (20) hours a week class room doing that sports off season (10) hours a week class room doing that sports season. Then they can spend more time training. Asian/Hawaii team will require that all sports teams must have at least (30%) foreign players on their roster.
Man, all this conference (Big 12, MWC, Pac 10 or 12 etc.) just snagging school
left and right. I guess that’s when you know it’s all about the money. When all
