USC recruits more High School All Americans than most. They have players on the 2nd teams that are drafted. A look at a player by player analysis (UH Projected Starter:USC Player Intent on Leaving) and you have a comparative short list to go after.
That is, after you speak with some UH players on the advisability of gray shirt, and you look at recruits that have not made the eligibility requirements.

Given the connections across the board at UH Athletics & UH Foundation it does not seem unreasonable to pursue a program that links hotels (Kyo-Ya/Starwood & Outrigger come to mind), transportation (Roberts), restaurants (Willows, Dukes), and airline leasing (Hawaiian, World Airways)via Oakland or LAX to move teams from the mainland over to Hawaii for games. Does this make UH games more attractive to schools looking at schedules? Does this make UH more attractive to possible conference suitors?

When you spoke with Mufi for your quote in today’s paper, did you get a sense that there may be NO assistance or monetary commitment from the state with regards to UH seeking other conference options should the concern arise?

When I commuted to Oahu, Petals and Beans was my first stop before going to my office at Koapaka. Even bought a few gift baskets for do-workers. To lazy to shop. 🙂

Chopsueyboy: The World Cup I do watch and from the matches I have observed we have an even board with ties coming from the starting teams as USA played a good match against England ending in a draw BUT the big name teams has yet to play with Spain, Brasil, Argentenia, Germany and watch out for Cameroon from Africa as they are “sleepers” among the field as they have fast quick strikers !

All Groups are very interesting as each team that comes out has a fighting chance but from the draws we have already seen played “parity” is among the competitive fields except from the mention above as they are the “ELITE” of the field BUT that don’t mean nothing when you have over 80,000 fans screaming mad and sounding their horns for their country team as watching World Cup is amazing abd thrilling as it is a “spectable event” !

Love World Cup, Love Futbol as it is truly a religion over seas as kids play it every where with goals being hand made from sticks, shoveled in the dirt on their road empty lots with the most fantastic foot work from young feets that you can imagine and see !

Always rooting for Brasil BUT USA could be ready this year as they have young talent and Donovan Landon is still consider among the best strikers in the World as he is due for a game changing play !

The Chicago Slaughter picked up Brandon Eaton to join their team just in time for their playoff run.

The Chicago Slaughter (6-6), the premier indoor football team in the Chicagoland area, bolstered their roster with four veteran players – including two former Slaughter players who were part of the 2009 undefeated 2000 Championship team – heading into tonight’s big matchup with the LaCrosse Spartans (2-10) at the Sears Centre Arena for the last regular scheduled Slaughter home game for 2010 season.

Brandon Eaton (OL), is another former member of the Chicago Slaughter and fan favorite during the 2009 Championship season. At 6’2 and 310 lbs, Eaton played college ball for the University of Hawaii where he was awarded All-Conference honors as a senior.

The SEC wants Texas and Oklahoma, but the only team they might be able to get is Texas A&M. They are concerned that second choice schools like Texas A&M might not bring enough new money to the conference and their current members would get less if they expanded.

An SEC athletic director told ESPN.com’s Mark Schlabach that the SEC’s first choice would be adding the Longhorns, but might consider taking Texas A&M because it expands the league’s footprint into the Dallas and Houston TV markets.

Given the fact that Texas A&M may be the only Big 12 school the SEC could add, the league was prepared to make the move even if Texas and Oklahoma went elsewhere.

“We’ve got to be diligent in evaluating this,” another SEC athletic director told ESPN.com’s Schlabach. “We can’t just add teams who are going to split the pie without adding anything substantial to the pie.”

The Big East might add the Big 12 leftovers (except for Baylor, they probably are stuck in C-USA). That would be *bad* for UH and the WAC because it would mean that Big 12 wouldn’t raid the MWC.

Once word began to spread that Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and perhaps Missouri would be looking for a home the Big East became very interested in talking to them about joining the league.

Yesterday I began to contact some powerful members of the alumni associations at Georgetown, UCONN, USF, Louisville, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Pitt, and Syracuse and I found them all very interested in adding the Big 12 schools. One very high profile member of the USF Alumni speaking on the condition of anonymity told me “You can bet the Big East is being aggressive in expansion we will not be crushed by the Big Ten.”

AN UPDATE – I HAVE SPOKEN TO HIGH RANKING MEMBERS AT FOUR BIG EAST MEMBER INSTITUTIONS AND THEY ALL CONFIRMED INTEREST IN EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITY OF ADDING KANSAS, KANSAS STATE, IOWA STATE AND MISSOURI TO THE CONFERENCE. IN OTHER WORDS IF SOMEONE WANTS TO TALK TO THEM THEY ARE MORE THAN WILLING TO LISTEN.

Since there are so many different scenarios of realingment, I hope the following does not happen to the WAC (from the movie, Day After Tomorrow).

British Prof speaking to USA Prof: we just lost the Royal Family as the chopper sent to them all crashed – seems the gas lines froze.

With all this turmoil, I certainly hope that the State Legislature, Honolulu City Council, DEBT, local hotels and airlines, and Aloha Stadium can be much more proactive in offering “concessions” to make UHAD a viable and attractive venue. But, I won’t hold my breath because they have NO ONE, that I know of, within their respective organizations who possess the ability or capability to push a “pro-active” UH agenda the demise of which will have a terrible negative impact on the State’s economy!

Wishful thinking: Hawaiian or another airline willing to work with UH can offer 33%-40% discounts on airfare which can be allocated as a contribution and tax deductible and Sheraton or Outrigger or Starwood can offer the same discounts for the “official travel party” for all teams within the conference; bus company can do the same; all boosters traveling with the team can be allowed a 10-15% discount off all merchandise, meals, etc. by showing their state’s drivers license.

Aloha Stadium Authority, from their side, offer UH a “package” on parking and concession contribution.

City Council can change their “regulations/ guidelines” to allow functions at the SCC.

State Legislature can minimize the budget cuts to UH-Manoa specifically for UHAD.

Working together, much can be accomplished to keep UH athletics a viable and attractive venue.

Bottom line is teams and fans coming in will boost the hotel rates/income during many “off-peak” months and same applies to arilines – why fly 2/3 full when you can get sold out planes; fans/teams spending will contibute to State tax coffers.

AND, lastly the fans would have to make changes for football as UH moves the start time for games to 3 or 4 or 5pm to make televised games available on the mainland and visiting teams can save hotel/meals money by leaving right after a game.

All must make a sacrafice to insure that UH does continue in football and all other sports!!!

MAN I hope Hawaii can come out of this re-alignment with some decency as reading playing games in Asia and Japan would really take you to a whole new perception !

Wisconsin’s coach sure moves fast…he already contacted Big 10 officials to ask that they make Wisconsin and Nebraska play on the last game of the season as rivals. That could be a good matchup and would get some attention, and since Nebraska isn’t “rivals” with any Big 10 team yet, Wisconsin’s proactive move might be able to get them to claim Nebraska. Other Big 10 schools are closer to Nebraska geographically, though.

I contacted the Big 10 office about hopefully scheduling Nebraska as a last game rival on a yearly basis. Possible starting a trophy game.

It’s to bad that the WAC, Presidents and Commissioner, does not have the visonary, pro-active minds that could have avoided their current situation.

Brining in DII schools would only “down grade” the WAC and make it more unattractive to the other conferences. And, if there are only 4 mega-conferences after this, it may spell the doom for all the “left behind” football schools.

A-House… it wouldn’t be so bad if the so called “left-behind” schools were geographically in one area.. but it looks like they may be spread out quite a bit. Which is why DII schools may be the WAC’s only other out. We shall see.. we shall see. It will be like years gone by… but with less teams to choose from for those games at end of the season.

Our son grew up playing soccer and was on the first Olympic Developmental team that represented Hawaii in regionals.
Will always cheer for USA, but if we’re not still in it, Brasil has been a long time favorite. I was fortunate enough to enjoy watching Pele live at Aloha Stadium a long time ago in a galaxy far away.

I read and feel your dissapointment as only time will tell until all the BIG TIME schools are finish realing and dealing and then when the dust is all clear Hawaii can make it’s move with what ever Teams are remaining BUT having the likes of Sacramento State, San Luis Obispo or Santa Cruz joining you folks will be just “AWEFUL” to imagine as I could not subject myself in watching Hawaii play since being a former Bow who played against the toughest teams around the country during that golden era of the 70’s and 80’s !

Pro Activeness I am not seeing BUT in reality can’t see as Hawaii is not calling the shots with the BIGGER conferences in total control !

Commish Benson I gather is not high on your list as I guess he belongs with the fumbler in which I know personally your feelings toward Hawaii’s former AD as many feel he got you in this situation because of his arrogance and controversial management skills !

Hopefully Mr. A House their is a silver cloud over each lining as we can only wait and see BUT when you snooze kind sir you lose as AD Jim Donovan has his work cut out for him and Muppet Henson Benson can’t find Kermit and Miss Piggy !

If we had done like Boise and charged ample student activity fees 10 years ago.. built special boxes at the stadium with outrageous corporate sponsorship prices…. then maybe.. but Boise already had a huge following following there multiple National Championships as a JC powerhouse. They didn’t come without a solid foundation and following.. they simply waited patiently till they were ready to make a move…and had all the $$ they needed behind them.

your #221 – Midori7 and I were discussing,her idea, of a UH without football and aligning with other conferences for all the other sports. Men VB is already within a separate “conference” which includes the best schools on the West Coast and covers several conferences. She also mentioned Sac State which is part of the WAC for baseball only. Na Wahine SB could align with a West Coast conference as could track and field.

Perhaps, UHAD can look at this possibility as an option if UH is left totally out of the WAC or MWC/WAC conbination. Being the oldest school in the WAC will not hold any weight when it comes to making the tough $$$ decisions.

If you were the Big 12 commissioner and the Texas/Oklahoma school defect, which conference(s) would you raid and which schools would you invite to retain the AQ BCS status and, why?

Also, if there is to be 4 “mega conferences with 16 schools, will the mid-majors have a chance to break into the BCS bowl games providing, of course, that the BCS system stays in tack (which I doubt because so many of the top teams will be in the 4 conferences)?

Since the BCS conferences control the BCS, I doubt if they will keep the same system in selection of schools to their bowl games. The outcry will be so loud that they will bend with the prevailing tide.

My message is that many, many individuals must reach a collective decison that maintaining UH sports, especially football, is in the best interest of the State and counties.

Put UH first and their own greed second; just for this time; see the fruits; and then make a full commitment to support Hawaii athletics including the DII schools in the Pac West Conference. As the State economy improves, this may also be a major factor in companies pulling together to support UH football.

We need a great marketing mind to pull this off and that one person may be Keith Amemiya, UH Board of Regents secretary.

A-House – I agree that Keith Amemiya would be great at being the advocate for the University; however, I believe that he could not do both his current job and this one as well. The Regents Executive Secretary is a very important & complex job covering a kazillion requirements, duties, etc.

Nuts – have to go back to work – yardwork – since there’s only a couple of hours of sunlight left. We’re going to be putting in an edible garden sometime during the next couple of weeks and it’s turning into more work than I expected. My first two crops are going to be soybeans and small sweet & juicy strawberries plus a variety of melons.

Thank you for your posts on “regulatory issues” as they are very informative and helpful to me in sorting out what happened, is happening, and what will happen for UHManoa. I like, very much, the new language rearding use of the SCC which will make it available, for a fee, its structure.

Now, if we can only get “upper campus” to release some of the “parking” $$ when UH sport is played for that is the only reason for any “spike” in revenue.

For the communities surrounding Aloha Stadium, do they sit as “advisors” or voting members of the committee?

For those of you who are wondering what, if anything, University President MRC Greenwoood, Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, amd Board of Regents Chair Howard H. Karr are doing or planning to do about the significant shifts in UH’s sports future, why not contact them directly to express your concerns. NOTE: The next BOR meeting in on July 15.

The committees will probably be identified as Working Groups rather than Task Forces. The former is much more informal than the latter. For example, on a Task Force a representative from Salt Lake would most likely be someone who’s on the Neighborhood Board whereas people from various community groups including service clubs or a community association or a nearby church could take part in Working Group.

The big challenge facing private developers will be to make sure that whatever they build fits in with the larger community and does not impact the basic infrastructur negatively. Fortunately, Transit-Oriented Development has happened all over the world and has really made a huge difference. TOD creates jobs – both in construction and in the long run.

For example, not only will there be retail, commercial, office & professional buildings, some light industrial, parking garages, and multi-family housing but also there could be a small hotel to accommodate both military families as well as visiting teams supporters or an international research facility – electronics/medical etc. There could even be a second permanent recreational facility – an amusement park or a race track or ????

In other words, we are NOT talking about a 7-day-a-week Swap Meet/Farmers’ Market here.

The Big Vision has to include expanding to the Far East and to the South Pacific. Why not rugby or soccer? BTW – how big is a soccer field. It looks as if it’s 50% larger than a football field.

The possibilities are endless, but the neighboring communities need to be heard and have their concerns addressed.

ALL of these planning decisions will be impacted by what happens over the next few weeks. If we’ve already spent $60 million on Aloha Stadium repairs and TOD is going to happen over the next 12 years, then having Aloha Stadium no longer used for college football will be a disaster.

You got it. That’s the message being put out right now.

The state owns the land at Aloha Stadium so the revenues from land leases for all of these buildings will be humungous. The first time I heard a TOD presentation back in the Spring of 2008, I walked out of the room in a daze. I had no idea as to what could happen at all of these transit stations, but the potential at Aloha Stadium left everyone in the room speechless.

Estimates for development costs just at this one station range from $150 million to half a billion depending upon what is allowed to be built.

TOD as I envisioned it when the Rail concept first got approved by the City was something along the lines of what you might see in the outlying areas of Japan.. where there are municipalities of 350,000 people or more around the major train stops… and smaller townships along the way… The ones with 300,000 people or more have multi-story department stores, fast food shops, gamerooms, public saunas, supermarkets, etc.. pretty much one stop shopping.. it is big business..with emphasis on BIG!

I had a birthday party to attend and then dinner at a friend’s house, so aside from a few posts I snuck in when I had a few minutes I’ve been gone all day. A lot has happened today in conference realignment. Much of it directly affects UH! I’m still trying to absorb everything…

First thing is that Montana is apparently off the table for the WAC. This is from a feature article on Karl Benson in today’s Salt Lake Tribune:

The bad news: Big Sky power Montana, a logical replacement for Boise, has shown little enthusiasm to make the costly step.

The next thing is that the SEC’s commissioner was apparently visiting with Texas A&M today. This is one of multiple reports on the subject:

The debate was between Kansas and Utah to take Texas A&M’s spot. I’ve been cheering for Utah (to weaken the MWC and keep the Big 12 at 5 teams) but most media reports yesterday seemed to indicate Kansas was winning. However, this news (if true) would make me very happy.

A&M is out, Utah’s in. Monday could be a huge day.

the Pac-10’s commissioner visited with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State today. He will visit with Texas, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M on Sunday. The meeting with Texas A&M should be interesting–Texas A&M met with the SEC commissioner today and seems ready to go to the SEC. If the Pac-10 commissioner cannot convince Texas A&M tomorrow, then Texas A&M will go to the SEC. That also means that the SEC will poach at least one ACC or Big East team.

Oklahoma administrators confirmed a campus visit Saturday from Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott but did not elaborate beyond calling it an “informative meeting” in a news release distributed by school officials.

Multiple Big 12 sources have confirmed that Scott also paid a visit Saturday to Oklahoma State and has scheduled visits today on campuses at Texas, Texas Tech and Texas A&M. Scott is expected to extend formal invitations to all five schools in advance of scheduled regents meetings Tuesday at Texas and Texas Tech.

Oklahoma officials announced a regents meeting Wednesday. A&M officials have yet to call a meeting and, based on information from multiple sources, regents are badly split between accepting a Pac-10 offer and exploring a chance to join the Southeastern Conference.

One source contacted Saturday said the A&M regents board appeared slightly in favor of pursuing SEC membership.

I should note that WassupDoc has been *very* closely following all of the developments at Aloha Stadium and UH is lucky to have such a dedicated and tireless supporter. There has been some progress made on that front, with amazing potential for UH, but if the WAC dies then all of their efforts will be too late. I don’t think I can say any more than that.

I wish that conference expansion could have held off for a little longer so that the football team would have had a chance to turn things around and that other things would have had more time.

Texas turned down the SEC over academic standards. Not only has Texas said that they won’t play A&M if A&M goes to the SEC, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State have reportedly said that they won’t play Texas A&M anymore in ANY SPORT if they go to the SEC.

There are those on the regents board who feel the 100-year rivalry with Texas must remain intact. Sources said A&M officials were hoping for an agreement with Texas to continue scheduling football games against one another, even if they were in separate leagues. But sources say UT officials have vowed that if A&M turns down its invitation to the Pac-10, breaks away from UT and goes to the SEC, Texas won’t schedule the Aggies in anything anytime soon.

Texas has already turned down the SEC. Sources close to UT say the Longhorns don’t see it as a cultural fit, namely because of the SEC’s academic standards.

Oklahoma State’s power in the Oklahoma legislature might force Oklahoma to go to the Pac-16 since the SEC doesn’t want Oklahoma State.

Sources close to the SEC/Texas A&M talks say Oklahoma is still listening to proposals from the SEC. But the sources said the SEC is not interested in Oklahoma State.

Trying to split OU and Oklahoma State could cause resistance in the Oklahoma Legislature, which appears to have more members who’ve graduated from OSU than OU, according to an informal count.

The ADs of the 5 Big 12 South schools who are invited to the Pac-16 will meet with the Pac-10’s commissioner on Monday. So, the Pac-10’s commissioner visiting each Oklahoma school today, will visit the 3 Texas schools tomorrow, then meet with all of the ADs on Monday…and Texas has its Regents meet on Tuesday.

A meeting between Scott, Weiberg and the five Big 12 South athletic directors being targeted by the Pac-10 is tentatively planned for Monday in Dallas, sources said.

The headline blares, “U.S. Sweeps Curtis Cup!”.
