“The Dance”

“The Dance”

Looking back on the memory of

The dance we shared ‘neath the stars above

For a moment, all the world was right

How could I have known that you’d ever say goodbye?

And now. I’m glad I didn’t know

The way it all would end, the way it all would go

Our lives are better left to chance

I could have missed the pain

But I’d of had to miss the dance

Holding you I held everything

For a moment, wasn’t I the king?

But if I’d only known how the king would fall

Hey who’s to say, you know I might have changed it all

And now I’m glad I didn’t know

The way it all would end,  the way it all would go

Our lives are better left to chance

I could have missed the pain

But I’d of had to miss the dance

Yes, my life is better left to chance

I could have missed the pain

But I’d of had to miss the dance

Can anyone answer this question – can financial gifts be made to sports programs to underwrite recruitment costs – coaches’ traveling expenses, promotional materials, campus visits, etc? Since softball doesn’t generate any revenues, how can we naximize the long-term positive impacts that the Wahine have generated nationally over the past three-plus weeks.

I think Hawaiian Air donated 100 round trip tickets for recruiting. Not sure if for only football or other sports have access to it.

Future Warrior has an MMA fight tonight.

Wai’anae siblings David “Bubba” Pa’aluhi and Raquel Pa’aluhi will fight in separate bouts on the undercard of tonight’s X-1 World Events “Nations Collide” card at the Blaisdell Center Arena.

Bubba’s bout is being staged under amateur rules because he is still an NCAA athlete.

He was a starting linebacker on the Oregon State football team as a junior last season, and finished second on the team in tackles. He said he will enroll at the University of Hawai’i, and is awaiting a decision from the NCAA on whether he will be eligible to play for the Warriors in either 2010 or 2011.

Suggest you talk to the people at UHF for a more detailed answer. It usually is by donation to UHF for the AD/specifying the sport and goes into the coach’s discretionary fund.

  20. Garret June 4, 2010 7:34 am

I saw this posted elsewhere–Oklahoma’s AD confirms that the 6 teams leaving for the Pac-10 was discussed during the Big 12 meeting yesterday. The Big 12 Commissioner said that he wanted a “honest” and “frank” discussion that would lead to everyone pledging to be loyal to the Big 12. Instead, Missouri refused to say they would stay in the Big 12 and the 6 teams leaving for the Pac-10 plan was discussed.

Castiglione said possible ties with the Pac-10 were discussed on Thursday.

“I think there’s some potential value there,” he said. “We had one meeting with some of the members of the Pac-10. It wasn’t a scheduled meeting. We brainstormed some of the possibilities that may exist. Since then, both our commissioner and Larry Scott have had conversations. It leads one to believe there are some real viable opportunities for both leagues.”

  21. Garret June 4, 2010 7:37 am

An Oklahoma paper had an interesting article.

Someone at Texas, perhaps athletic director DeLoss Dodds, may have sent this message across the table to Nebraska and Missouri: “I’ll see your two and raise you four, partners.”

Nebraska and Missouri have been the two Big 12 schools that have dominated the headlines for the past several months. Speculation has raged that the Cornhuskers and Tigers will accept if they are offered membership
invitations by the Big Ten as part of its expansion plans.

Thursday’s explosive story out of Austin, Texas, upped the ante to six Big 12 schools and instantly made the Nebraska-Missouri scenario back-page news.

  23. 808ike June 4, 2010 7:51 am

The head coach for U. of Arizona complained about the bats UH hitters
were using. I wonder why? He didn’t complain last year when his team
set the NCAA record for HR in a season. Is it because UH WAHINES
    annihilated his record?

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

Mahalo & best wishes to all the HA staff on their last day(s). We will miss the HA terribly.
Just ran into my friend who is a non-newsroom HA employee. She will not be making the move over and will be taking some time to contemplate her next move.

Best birthday wishes to Rich2176, Jumping Jack Flash & Protector!

Heard Don Robbs this am on BC’s show. ASU has *metal* bleachers in their stadium and temps are expected to be over 100. Ouch ouch ouch.

    GO WAHINE!!

  25. Buffoman June 4, 2010 8:00 am

Is it just me or am I missing something with our WAC(y) commissioner, or is he under gag order by the WAC presidents?

Everyone other conference seems to be strategizing and positioning by being proactive.

Looks like the BIG loosers in this should be the quiet ones, Big East and WAC. Everyone else seems to be jockeying for position whether what is publically said is the truth or not, they are positioning. I guess ours is to be quiet.

The “ugly duckling” theory is really at work here. If we were winning and winning constantly and winning with notice there could be a bargaining chit we could offer. It may hurt the bottomline but it may mean survival.

The chit? If payouts are going to be that big, we could have offered subsidizing travel to play here. Yes we would have netted less, but hey, we’d survive. With nobody looking at the “ugly duckling” at this point, that point is moot. We have nothing to offer, really.

Okay, I’m over that. Let’s work the be the best “hash” conference. “Hash, where all the leftovers go to make a meal. I happen to like hash and eggs.

Someone asked why people here soo critical of mainland announcers…weeeellllllll…we can all see how much effort they put into minimizing the accomplishments of teams from Hawaii….

Actually we do the same thing. Last year when the Hawaii football team struggled against Central Arkansas, most of the Hawaii fans never gave any credit to CA for being a good football team. All they could say was that Hawaii was somehow not playing as they were expected. The same was true in 2008 when Hawaii played against Weber State, We didn’t give Weber State for being good, we all said that Hawaii was underperforming.

It is a perception by most fans of BCS schools that the sports teams and programs from the none BCS schools are simply not up to par. You can break it down evevn further and you’ll notice during the football season that all of the SEC fans don’t have any respect for the none SEC football schools. That includes not only fans but also players, coaches, and the media. Nothing anyone can do about it. Players and coaches from teams like the Rainbow Wahine softball team need to remember that the only opinions that matter are from those of the members on the team bus. That’s all. No one else matters.

I didn’t watch the news yesterday, but I saw Dayton Morinaga’s interview on Hawaii News Now and it’s unfortunate. I only know Morinaga’s work through his coverage of UH men’s basketball with the Advertiser, but it doesn’t take much to understand how hard it is to accept the reality of the situation.

I hope others like him will be able to continue their endeavors.

    SJ,

No hats. Same hats at BOTH the Rainbowtique in Ward and in town.

For Myki, there is a NEW Under Armour Rainbow Wahine softball shirt. I was disappointed it’s a women’s shirt only.

Not sure what kind of deal the Wahine have with UA since their uniforms, cleats, practice clothes and team apparel are all UA, but they should make at least a design or two for the MALE wahine fans as well!

    Pomai #30,

    re:bats

Coach COOL mentioned it takes 3 years to season the bats for optimal
performance. If the BCS schools can not wait that long, Coach Cool
should auction off a few bats since he will have more seasoned bats
    next year.

Opening bid should start at $50 million.

Money to be applied towards improvement of the Athletic Dept.

  47. Kazz currently pledges $270.00 to Wahine softball June 4, 2010 9:00 am

    WAHINE,

DETERMINATION ALONE MOVES THE WHEELS OF HISTORY!
Have you ever asked yourselves in an hour of meditation – which everyone finds during the day – how long we have been striving for greatness? Not only the years you’ve been playing softball – the war of work – but from the moment as a child, when we realize the world could be conquered. It has been a lifetime struggle a never-ending fight, I say to you and you will understand that it is a privilege to fight!!!

    YOU ARE THE WAHINE!!!

Young women of Hawaii, I ask you once more rise and be worthy of this historical hour. No revolution is worth anything unless it can defend itself.

Some people will tell you the long ball is a bad softball. They’ll conjure up images of over-used bats and short fields. This is our duty to change their perception!!! I say, modern-day female athletes unite! We must never acquiesce, for it is together… TOGETHER THAT WE PREVAIL! WE MUST NEVER CEDE CONTROL OF OUR DESTINY…FOR IT IS TOGETHER THAT WE PREVAIL!

  48. Old Diver June 4, 2010 9:00 am

  52. Watch Godgifu June 4, 2010 9:06 am

KAZZ: What other teams uses the Easton bats? Noticed in some softball bat review that the Easton doesn’t rank as high as the other manufacturers so I’m wondering what the AZ coach is yelling about.

As has been said in other context, it’s not the size but how you use it!

For some reason, I always felt that the Advertiser just had a comfortable look and feel to it which I could never duplicate when picking up a hard copy or visiting the SB website. I hope some of the HA “mana” will pour over to the new HSA. To all the employees who will not be joining the the new HSA, I extend my best wishes to you all. I think it’s been documented that Tennessee and Georgia Tech are using the same type of Easton bats.

Speaking of the Vols fans, did you see all those Tennessee fans cheering the Wahine yesterday. They sat several rows above the Mizzou dugout and behind their fans.

    #15 cheering on #16 I guess…

But yeah, that Yee girl on GA Tech was using the same kind of bats the Wahine were using, but they sure as heck weren’t harping about her equipment. 🙄

  61. papajoe2 June 4, 2010 9:18 am

i’m 57 years old. i used to get up early every morning to beat my father to the newspaper to read the sports section when i was just old enough to read. at that time, i think there was only 8 national league and 8 american league teams in MLB. i probably knew every players name in the league. couldn’t wait to see how Mickey Mantle did or how Sandy Koufax, Johnny Padres, Don Drysdale, Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, Roger Maris, Bobby Richardson, Yogi Berra and even guys like Robin Roberts, Juan Marichal, Bob Gibson and all the other Yankees and Dodgers did. That was a loonngg time ago. we even subscribed to the Star Bulletin too. i’m very sad that another thing from my childhood is going away. i want wish all the Advertiser staff that will not be retained, the best of luck on their new endeavors. it will be hard at first, but hang in there, as all of you have a special talent and that talent will prevail. at the same time, i’d like to congratulate those that will be retained by the Star Advertiser. it’s obvious that you are blessed, but do not rest on your laurels and continue to strive to be the best you can be and to use your talents to make the new Star Advertiser the best newspaper it can be.

The Tsaikos should sponsor a new softball tournament in the preseason.

UH will be in it, it will be at the RWSS, BUT UCLA can be designated the “home team”.

We’ll call it, The Trophy In The Trashcan Invitational.

  63. J June 4, 2010 9:30 am

    Kazz….

Trophy In The Trashcan Invitational hmm..

    That would be TITT….never mind

  65. Slugger June 4, 2010 9:36 am

    Pride.,

#32 – As Coach Bob has instilled in his players & voiced by Majam in the NCAA interview, the team is only concerned about the players behind the name they wear on their jerseys. You worry about what you can control. Being concerned about the opinions & complaints from other teams is a waste of energy.

Fans have time to waste, not the team. If you support the team, do so by your attendance, your good will & good wishes towards the team, your financial support, i.e., Kazz-the-man & duffer & whitey!

  66. papajoe2 June 4, 2010 9:39 am

#346 808ike, 50 million starting bid for the bats is ridiculous. get real. we can start the bids at 47 million each and settle for 50+. LOL

#48 Old Driver, when it comes to push ups, do what i do. lie flat on your stomach. make a 180 degree turn so you are now on your back, arms at your sides. bend your arms at the elbows in an upward facing position. extend your arms upward, straightening the elbows and reaching as high as you can. bring down your arms, back to the bent elbow position. congratulations! you now did exactly 1 reverse push up. i find i can do a lot more push ups this way. do not over do it otherwise your arms will be sore and you won’t be able to lift the beer bottle. always warm down after doing strenuous exercises and make sure you stretch those muscles.

Hmmm.. The TITTI Tournament MIGHT attract the wrong people to the stadium though yeah?

  68. (Jesse) James June 4, 2010 9:46 am

Good Morning Tsaikos….Hope all is well.

Godspeed, God Bless, and Good Luck to all those at the ‘Tizer who will be moving on. You will be missed and we wish and pray for all the best for you and your families. Just remember the imortal words of Mr. Frank Sinatra:

“And now the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend I’ll say it clear
I’ll state my case of which I’m certain

    I’ve lived a life that’s full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
    I did it my way

    Regrets I’ve had a few
But then again too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption

    I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this
    I did it my way

Yes there were times I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out, I faced it all
And I stood tall and did it my way

I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried
I’ve had my fill, my share of losing
    And now as tears subside
I find it all so amusing

To think I did all that
And may I say not in a shy way
Oh no, oh no, not me
    I did it my way

For what is a man what has he got
If not himself then he has not
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
    And did it my way

    Yes it was my way”

You have to go prepared: towels, seat cushions, lots of agua! The pic of the cute guy at the ASU stadium shows the bleachers in the background.

I miss going to the D-Backs games in PHX, but Chase Field can close the roof to keep the stadium shaded and cooled by tons of A/C. Walking to the field from parking downtown in the middle of summer with 115 degree temps. was hot!

    Slugger,

Do you know a Nicole at Koa Anuenue? Nice gal. She’s helped me many times. Well, apparently she confirmed that the current Koa Anuenue account for softball which I’ve been depositing to every month is an account that Coach Coolen can directly access and can use the funds for his program in a way he sees fit.

I thought it was just to offset schollies and program expenses. Well, I guess either way you look at it, it’s the same thing.

Me Duffer, and Whitey are gonna deposit to this softball account when the pledge drive is over… Hopefully that will be right after June 9th. 😎

    Pride,

While I agree with your statement on perception, professional sportscasters should be able to step back a bit and be a little more objective, especially on the Super Regional and National Championship levels of such sports and Softball, Baseball, Basketball, or any other sports that have 40+ games. These are not the same as early season games. The teams that make it that far have justifiably proven their worth. By the time they get there, they have gone through a gauntlet of challenges and are deserving to be considered as winners and worthy contenders.

Would local fans look down on the Div II HPU Softball team if they were to play UH’s Div I Softball team next week?

  85. Garret June 4, 2010 10:16 am

The Big 12 Commissioner met with the press today and confirmed that other conferences have contacted him. The President of UT-Austin was supposed to attend the press conference with him but Pres. Powers “had a plane to catch”.

Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe spoke to reporters just a few minutes ago. Here are some quick hits from the news conference:

He said he is aware of reports that the Pac-10 will offer six schools membership, possibly as soon as today. He said he understands why the leagues want his schools, but offered no specifics about the reports.

He said contingency plans are in place in case schools leave and said “it’s a critical time period” for the conference.

He said he’s spoken with other conference commissioners but has chosen to keep those conversations private.

  86. Garret June 4, 2010 10:18 am

By the way, there are multiple reports now that the Pac-10 news has caused the Big 10 to move up their expansion decisions from the 12-18 months they had planned…the Big 10 will meet on Sunday and reports are that might need to move quickly to try to get Texas.

  88. Garret June 4, 2010 10:21 am

    madeinhawaii,

I agree with the point that pride made. I have seen local fans regularly put down the competition when UH plays a D-IAA school in football and when UH plays UH-Hilo or one on other smaller schools in Hawaii in basketball. I’ve even seen UH fans publicly put down WAC teams from NMSU, Utah State, SJSU, etc.

  89. 808ike June 4, 2010 10:26 am

Happy B-day RICH2176, PROTECTOR, JACK FLASH!

  90. protector June 4, 2010 10:26 am

The only thing professional about Michele Smith is the caliber of her denigration, ingrained bias & elitist condescension. I e-mailed ESPN to respectfully complain (citing examples of bias & unprofessionalism) & requested she be excused from any announcing duties that had UH as a participant. So much for that; I’m sure they deleted it while they politely acknowledged its receipt along with assurances it would be forwarded to the pertinent parties (yeah right).

  91. madeinhawaii June 4, 2010 10:27 am

    Garret,

I’m not disagreeing.. But post season championships past the NCAA regionals are a little different from early season.. regular season.. and Conference championships. By then, you have deservedly earned the respect from the so-called “professional” sportscasters. Fans, however, will be fans.

  94. Darren June 4, 2010 10:51 am

Garret – Why are there thoughts about the demise of the Big 12 if only 4 teams are left? Aren’t they still an AQ conference with bowl and television contracts in place, even if they lose 8 of their teams? There are articles stating that the remaining 4 could go to MWC or CUSA, both of which are not AQ status (MWC is close, but not there….even with Boise) and have nothing close to the size of television contracts of the Big 12. It seems like it should be the other way around…that the Big 12 would be the place to be for MWC and CUSA teams.

It looked like the Big 10’s decision was the starting point before. Now it really seems like Texas holds the key for everything here. It is both interesting and scary at the same time.

if the rule is specific about “crow hopping” the fault lies with the head coach and his asst for not correcting this. they think that they are above the rule, so the only way they will learn is to punish them and punish them is fair. no excuses. all sports are governed by rules of the game, so if a coach does not know the rule, it is called T S!!!!!

I know a lot of you think Kazz harps a lot about the disrespect that we get, well it shows all over the place an I can understand why we get all huhu. Example, even the NCAA treats Hawaii different then the big schools, just for the heck I was looking at the recap of the games for us and UCLA, well the recap for Na Koa Wahines was all of 130 words, yet the recap for UCLA was 818 words, go to the site an look, it just not right.

    Hawaii’s – http://www.ncaa.com/brackets/2010/ncaa_bracket_DI_softball.html
    UCLA’s – http://www.ncaa.com/sports/w-softbl/recaps/060310aab.html

This kind of stuff happens just to much

  130. Garret June 4, 2010 12:28 pm

    Pomai,

The fault may actually be with *UH*. Often times those recaps are written by the Sports Information Directors or other members of an Athletic Department. Didn’t UH’s own website say that UH lost the game for hours after the game was over? How much support do you think that UH gave for that game story to be written.

  138. Garret June 4, 2010 12:43 pm

    Darren,

There are all kinds of articles being written now, things are so muddled that the media won’t have a true picture of anything for awhile. Here are some things that reporters and fans don’t seem to understand clearly:

    1. Reports keep saying that Big 12 schools need to give 2 years notice to leave…WRONG. They can leave with 1 years notice if they pay a higher exit fee.

    2. Some people are speculating that the Big 12 teams that are leaving will change the exit fee rules. However, the Big 12 bylaws (which were available for free on the web the last time I checked) require a 75% approval to change the rules…the teams being left behind will NOT want the exit fee reduced.

    3. The Big 12 Commissioner had been saying that he was going to get everybody together to pledge loyalty yesterday. He actually said that he wanted to know “who was with us and who was on a plane”. Well, he got an answer but it wasn’t the answer he wanted! So, the Big 12 hasn’t had much time to work through the different scenarios so nothing has been decided yet.

    4. Making decisions now is premature because the Big 10 is meeting on Sunday and may come up with an offer that could sway Texas. They probably wouldn’t take 6 teams from the Big 12–they might want just Texas, Texas A&M, and Nebraska. Any person who says that they know for sure what will happen has never seen what can happen at the last minute in an auction.

The “Tech problem” for the Big 10 is that all Big 10 members are solid academically and AAU members…Texas and Texas A&M are but Texas Tech is not.

If the Big 12 implodes, I think that the Big 12 might be able to put together a good conference (enough to keep AQ status) if they grab teams from the MWC, C-USA, and maybe 1-2 WAC teams. They might even get teams from the Big East or merge with the Big East. Nobody knows right now.

It looks like the Presidents of the Big 10 will be meeting on Sunday and the Presidents of the Pac-10 will be meeting on Sunday. The MWC Presidents will also meet for several days starting on Sunday. Things should be decided by early next week.

Sadly, nobody seems to care when the WAC Presidents will meet…half the schools (BSU, Fresno, Nevada, La Tech, probably UH) want to leave anyway and the other half (NMSU especially) are just worried about the survival of their athletic department. If the WAC Presidents really wanted to keep the conference together and try to take advantage of the opportunities presented at a conference, they would be talking publicly about meeting and looking into options.

    GO WAHINE!!!!

  144. BG June 4, 2010 12:58 pm

Twenty minutes till game time…gotta keep busy until then.

Follow up to Coolen sending/holding up the runner at third. If it sounds like I’m nit-picking on Coach C, I probably am. I think he’s doing a fabulous job…I just have a contrarian streak from time to time.

In competitive situations, I often look to the military since that Chinese guy wrote that little book about warfare that practically all the asian top executives have read. Strategy says to keep your opponent off balance and wasting resources trying to figure out what you’re going to do. I guess that could possible mean taking chances like stealing a base or bunting every once in a while could make the opponent just a little unsure of what’s going to happen next. If the opponent is sure what the strategy is, they can align all their resources to stop you. They may not succeed, but they will make it harder than it needed to be.

Information…Traci gave it away in her post game interview that she was looking for a certain pitch location and adjusted for it. Do you think UCLA now won’t be looking for her “adjustments”? Might have been better to just say “I was looking for a hittable pitch and got lucky”

    Hey!!! Game time!!! Geeev-um Wahine!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XplQ8k6aDUA

FOLLOW YOUR ROAD by Pauline Wilson

With so many roads that seem to lead down to the sea,
I wonder which road will be the right one for me.
Others may fall away, dead ending left and right.
But there is this one road that journeys far out of sight.

Have you wondered where your road will lead you?
Maybe to a bright day of sunshine,
or a starry night in heaven.
Or it might be you’re afraid to go, afraid to go,
But you’ve got to follow your road,
or you’ll never know, never know.

We are all but travelers living in a foreign land,
Just trying to find our way best as we can.
Looking for an answer, trying to find some love
And though we have journeyed far,
    it’s not quite far enough..
    http://www.free-lyrics.org

Have you wondered where your road will lead you
Maybe to a song that needs singing, or a summer rain
Or it might be you’re afraid to go, afraid to go,
But you’ve got to follow your road, or you’ll never know.

You’ve got to follow your road, follow your road,
You’ve got to follow your road, follow your road,
You’ve got to follow your road, follow your road.
And maybe someday your road will take you far away.

Keep following, and you’ll find it,
And someday you will get there
    Don’t be afraid.

You’ve got to follow your road, follow your road, follow your road.

Good job Kaia. Keep your head up. You, too, Stephanie.

  269. HiFlyer June 4, 2010 3:37 pm

tough loss, but you have to look at the ucla pitcher she pitched a good game.

What time do they play tomorrow?

  270. Blue Powder June 4, 2010 3:37 pm

Nice job by UCLA. I hope we get another shot at them. The Wahine can definitely beat them.

  271. jm2375 June 4, 2010 3:39 pm

HiFlyer – Wahine at 1pm, BaseBows at 4pm. Leaves you enough time to get to the KK.

  272. Pomai June 4, 2010 3:39 pm

This was a good game, Their pitcher was on it all game, she had the inside working really good, but did notice the one or two times she threw to the outside or middle we hit her good. If we face her again we need to figure out that inside pitch. She really had the control. I would have had our girls move an inch or two back in the box.

  273. madeinhawaii June 4, 2010 3:40 pm

Too bad… but I would have been surprised if the Wahine went to the final round without a loss. They’ll have to do it the way they’ve always done it … the hard way.. earning it … step . by step…

Once they stopped the bleeding they were able to contain a good UCLA team and find their bats.. but too little too late… Tomorrow they will come out hungrier than ever knowing that losing two in a row.. is not in their blood…

    Go WAHINE!

  274. Kazz ($290.00) June 4, 2010 3:42 pm

Good thing this was the first game of the day/evening.

Now they get some time to really let this one sink in.

There is nothing more dangerous than the human soul on fire.

The most devestating fires are the ones that have time to grow.

GO OUT TOMORROW AND LIGHT THEM ALL UP!!!

  275. A-House June 4, 2010 3:45 pm

Happy Birfday to the new 3 Amigos: Rich, Protector and Jack Flash!!

  277. al June 4, 2010 3:52 pm

hiflyer….tomw’s elimination game is at 1 pm hst.

  278. al June 4, 2010 3:56 pm

    parnaby pitched well.

    we played good defense.

5-6 batters produced still looking for 7th batter to step it up.

    1-4 went silent.

there were times when we were chasing late in the game by three runs that i felt that we needed to take until we had a strike. we needed three runners to tie the game and one or two solo hr’s would still have left us behind.

  279. d1島 June 4, 2010 3:58 pm

    azwarrior22,

  288. bb June 4, 2010 4:23 pm

1420 saying we playin UW or UA

  289. 808ike June 4, 2010 4:23 pm

Hats off to the UCLA team. The UCLA coaches did their homework and
scouted UH well. The pitcher set the tone of the ballgame.

Even with this loss, still think UH can beat UCLA.

  290. bb June 4, 2010 4:25 pm

    rematch with the huskies!

  291. d1島 June 4, 2010 4:25 pm

    Aloha Coach Wooden.

  292. bb June 4, 2010 4:27 pm

Somebody explain me how the heck we playin the loser of UA and UW….

Who is running the show out in OKC?

  293. Maverick June 4, 2010 4:29 pm

Hawaii plays the winner of Florida/Missouri

  294. Maverick June 4, 2010 4:30 pm

Will now need to win 3 in a row to advance to the title game.

  295. Maverick June 4, 2010 4:30 pm

sorry. Win 3 in row to win the title game

  296. bb June 4, 2010 4:32 pm

im listening to 1420 they just talked to Kauwe and he said UA/UW….mass confusion

  297. Kazz ($290.00) June 4, 2010 4:33 pm

    Mizzou is OLD news.

    I WANT FLORIDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two SEC powers going down to the Wahine in the World Series sounds good to me! 😎

  298. 808ike June 4, 2010 4:34 pm

    bb #292,

  299. bb June 4, 2010 4:35 pm

sounds like its official….loser of UA vs UW

  300. duffer June 4, 2010 4:35 pm

    Ho Kazz,

I hope I neva jinx the Wahine with that pledge!!!!!!

  301. uhfan June 4, 2010 4:37 pm

That’s weird. Dont see UA beating UW. Lost to UA earlier this year.

  302. Maverick June 4, 2010 4:38 pm

    BB.

    Look at the brackets

  303. 808ike June 4, 2010 4:39 pm

    bb #300,

NCAA is finding ways to get UH out of WCWS.

  304. Maverick June 4, 2010 4:40 pm

Tanks Kazz for seeing the facts
    :>

  305. bb June 4, 2010 4:40 pm

the whole bracket thing is whacked.

everything says Missouri/Florida but Kauwe and UH’s SID confirmed it was UW/UA

  306. 808ike June 4, 2010 4:41 pm

    Maverick,

2 different brackets at WCWS at OK CITY per ESPN 1420.

  307. d1島 June 4, 2010 4:42 pm

    bb,

Hawaii baseball plays the winner of U. of Arizona-U. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tomorrow.

  308. Maverick June 4, 2010 4:42 pm

    8 teams

    4 teams per bracket

    Figure it out.

  309. Kazz ($290.00) June 4, 2010 4:43 pm

    Duffer,

No worries. I said that if the Wahine get eliminated THEN it’s your fault! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

I misspoke with regards to the bracket so it’s a wash. No worries. 😎

  310. d1島 June 4, 2010 4:44 pm

    😳
    ASU, not UA

  311. bb June 4, 2010 4:45 pm

    im talking softball…

1420 is saying, SID is confirming we are playing winner of UW/UA at 330 our time

im still trying to figure it out. if you know mav, please explain

  312. Maverick June 4, 2010 4:48 pm

    BB-
    Look at the brackets.
    They no lie.

1420 guys are on a rant. They are amatuers.

    Confusious says “Numbers don’t lie”

  313. d1島 June 4, 2010 4:49 pm

Is this the same SID that didn’t know any better than to let Mack get back up in front of the media without a written statement for that unfortunate attempt at an apology last year? 🙄

    Go with the NCAA brackets….

    http://www.ncaa.com/brackets/2010/ncaa_bracket_DI_softball.html

  314. Maverick June 4, 2010 4:51 pm

It is the Total winner of one bracket ( Hawaii, Florida, Missouri, UCLA)

    vs.

The total winner of the other bracket ( Washington, Arizona, Georgia, Tennesee)

    For the title game.

Then it’s decided 2 out of 3 games.

  315. 808ike June 4, 2010 4:52 pm

What a curveball they threw at UH. Sorry curveball, don’t mean you.

  316. Kazz ($290.00) June 4, 2010 4:53 pm

The Wahine could be facing the Decepticons tomorrow. It wouldn’t matter.

If the Wahine stay true to their mantra all season long, they are determined.

    Like I said:

“There is nothing more dangerous than the human soul on fire.”

  317. bb June 4, 2010 4:54 pm

I hope that is what it is…

But they saying on 1420 they spoke to UH SID and said the brackets get switched up and this is what they have done in past years.

  318. Maverick June 4, 2010 4:54 pm

Off to watch Tennessee rout Georgia..

Title game in my own Utopia…. Tenessee vs. Hawaii

  319. Stephen Tsai June 4, 2010 4:55 pm

Correction: UH will play the Arizona-Washington winner at 3:30 p.m. Hawaii time tomorrow .

  320. d1島 June 4, 2010 4:57 pm

ASU up 5-1 now…just homered in the btm 3rd….BP just getting started 😈

  321. 808ike June 4, 2010 4:57 pm

    Maverick,

Still agree with you on the brackets.

  322. 808ike June 4, 2010 4:58 pm

    Kazz,

E-mail Coach COOL and let us know. Thanks.

  323. Kazz ($290.00) June 4, 2010 4:59 pm

    FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD!!!

WE PLAY MISSOURI OR FLORIDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😡

    I’M DONE!!!!

  324. koakane June 4, 2010 4:59 pm

condolences to the Wooden family on the coach John passing. He was a good coach, good family man and great person. he will be missed

kudo’s to esme on her final day with the HA. be happy with what you did and keep your eye on the future.

hip hip horay for the warrior men on their victory

to the wahine’s “it’s not over till it’s over or if can can if no can still can.

only thing that impressed me was UCLA high powered coaching staff. all alumni that played for the program and went on to play on Olympic National teams.

  325. bb June 4, 2010 4:59 pm

Blog boss…can you confirm…and then explain? dont make sense

  326. Kazz ($290.00) June 4, 2010 5:01 pm

    Ok,

    WAIT! I’m, NOT done.

    WHAT?

Wow, ESPN REALLY wants that SEC and PAC 10 match up for the title huh?

  327. bb June 4, 2010 5:02 pm

and peeps thought i was trippin…

  328. d1島 June 4, 2010 5:05 pm

    bb,

    Not you…those 1420 guys!

  329. Pomai June 4, 2010 5:06 pm

I don’t understand this they are not in our bracket, if this true then I hope coach Coolen protest this, they are trying anyway they can to keep Hawaii out of the CWS. They must not be sure that UCLA can beat us and think that Washington will end up beating AZ and think for sure Washington can beat us. Just more of the same chit.

  330. HiFlyer June 4, 2010 5:09 pm

Why set up brackets, if in the middle to the tournament you are going to change the way the brackets are played.

  331. Pomai June 4, 2010 5:14 pm

UH website says The Rainbow Wahine will next play the winner of Washington-Arizona

  332. Kazz ($290.00) June 4, 2010 5:19 pm

Ralph also says the same thing Kara Nishimura and Stephen said.

Apparently, this isn’t the first time they’ve done this. I don’t know as I only follow UH as far as they get and since this is our first time in the WCWS… there ya go.

A better mix of opponents? I dunno.

  333. 808ike June 4, 2010 5:21 pm

    Pomai,

The UH website article about UH losing says Florida/Missouri winner.

the front page schedule says UA or UW.

  334. Kazz ($290.00) June 4, 2010 5:22 pm

I see a lot of things, but I also see opportunity.

Let’s see the Wahine make history AGAIN!!!

  335. Kazz ($290.00) June 4, 2010 5:25 pm

    808ike,

Yeah..ummm… NOT a good time to e-mail Coolen.

  336. chopsueyboy June 4, 2010 5:27 pm

    NCAA website make sense
we should play the winner of Florida/Missouri

    http://www.ncaa.com/brackets/2010/ncaa_bracket_DI_softball.html

  337. whitey June 4, 2010 5:32 pm

Tomorrow 1 pm, HST, Hawaii vs the winner of Florida-Missouri. If these so called “professionals” cannot read the bracketing, they should go to class and learn how to read and make brackets.

  338. papajoe2 June 4, 2010 5:34 pm

the UH SID may be following the unfortunate HA employees at the unemployment line. this the person that had Alabama winning 4-3?

  339. 808ike June 4, 2010 5:35 pm

USA Today announced UH plays UA/UW winner.

Guess it doesn’t matter who UH encounters. UH still needs to WIN 3 games
    to compete in the finals.

  340. whitey June 4, 2010 5:36 pm

Even tho we did not win, congrats to the Rainbow Wahines on a very good game. Lots of excitement and very well played. Thanks. Look forward tomorrow at 1 pm to see you get more marbles.

Congrats to the basebows and keep it going!!!

  341. Ralph June 4, 2010 5:38 pm

It doesn’t matter who UH plays, UH has to go undefeated to reach the finals and at this stage, everyone is good including our Na Wahine. Just Win.

  342. Wahine In OKC June 4, 2010 5:41 pm

We play whoever shows up in the other dugout, it doesn’t matter to us. We’ll compete against anyone. We’re very disappointed with the loss, but Cool says to keep our heads up and that we lost to a very good ball team. He says that we showed that we can compete against anyone, and to just play our own game. Cool said if we need to be more patient at the plate and good things will happen. He says not to chase pitches, but to let those pitchers pitch to us. I don’t know what that means. Good thing I’m only a freshman and don’t get to play much, or at all.

  343. wafan June 4, 2010 5:41 pm

Huh. Learned something new. In the NCAA bracket link, if you click on the game there is another link that opens. On that link there are archieved and live videos of the games.

The archieved games go back to the finals of the Super Regionals. There are other sports listed there, too. Tennis, baseball, . . .

Of course, you have to listen to the biased ESPN boobs if you listen to the Wahine games. But, for those of us who missed the games for whatever reason it is only slightly better than having completely missing everything.

  344. Ralph June 4, 2010 5:44 pm

I just want to see Tennessee win, Georgia stalled around too much last night making the game a 3 hour bore.

  345. Kazz ($290.00) June 4, 2010 5:44 pm

I think Kara Nishimura has been doing a hell of a job up there.

Thinking back to the rained out Alabama game, Bob Coolen was quoted in saying he couldn’t locate an NCAA representative on the premises when he was trying to get information on what the situation with the rain delay was. So he just took the team back to the hotel since it was 5 minutes away to get something to eat and get comfortable.

To me, that’s a glimpse into the availablity of the NCAA and their information.

  346. whitey June 4, 2010 5:47 pm

NCAA Women’s Softball WS, double elimination in bracket play, then best of three in championship. If they move the winner of UA-WA to play UH, then JD should call his legal counsel and file an injunction against the NCAA for going against their own rule of how this tournament is set up. No where does it say that they can crossover in bracket play.

  347. Pomai June 4, 2010 5:52 pm

I agree it really dosen’t matter who we play we need to win. ESPN announcers just said something about crossing brackets. I really wanted to see us play Washington for the title, but in the end it really doesn’t matter as long as we win.

Would be intresting to see how many times in the past has this (crossing the brackets) happened?

You could barely handle those mercy rule games by the Wahine at home a few months ago!!!! 😆

    3 hours!!!!!!!!! UGH!!!

  350. Ralph June 4, 2010 5:58 pm

in the cross over bracket for UH, it makes it possible for UH not to play a team that was in its bracket. We play the winner of UA/UDUB, winner plays Tennessee. Makes sense, we won’t have the possibility of playing Missouri again should they beat Florida, and then face off with UCLA again, the winner moving on to play in the 2/3 championship on Monday.

  352. al June 4, 2010 6:03 pm

    on another note…..

this has got to be an ncaa record…kelly majam’s seven leadoff homeruns has just got to be a new ncaa record.

  353. Ralph June 4, 2010 6:07 pm

UH plays at 3:30 pm HST, just enough time to pick up some fuud and make the drive to KK after the game. No time to bocha, but that’s okay, take a morning shower and no sweat the game out.

  354. Pomai June 4, 2010 6:09 pm

What I don’t understand is why set up the brackets then throw them out, what is the reasoning behind this. I would think that if you set it up in the brackets then they should follow them.

  355. HiFlyer June 4, 2010 6:14 pm

Pomai – NCAA = No Clue At All

  356. Ralph June 4, 2010 6:19 pm

actually playing the UDUB/Arizona winner is better for us, UA hasn’t scored a run in the last 3 world series game going back to last year, and the last two games they were mercy ruled. UDUB has Lawrie, but their hitting is not as good at this time compared to Florida and UCLA. So we play UDUB, we beat them, then we got to take two from Tennessee, the winner faces the UCLA and Georgia/Florida/Missouri winner.

  357. wafan June 4, 2010 6:25 pm

Seems to be much ado about not much.

If this is the way it has always been done then what is the problem?

If this is something new then what is the problem?

I seriously doubt the NCAA purposefully set out to mess with the Wahine. Have you any unrefuteable proof of this?

I am sure the Wahine knew of the flip-flop from the outset.

The Wahine will play and defeat whomever they must.

    Go Wahine!

We support you being the titas!!!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  358. jm2375 June 4, 2010 6:26 pm

I’m glad I’m not the only one confused about the brackets.

Do I have to say it again? Where’s the decision on USC?!!!!

    RIP John Wooden.

  359. wafan June 4, 2010 6:32 pm

Darn cold has worn me down.

    Nytal!

    Go Wahine!

    Be the titas!!!

  360. d1島 June 4, 2010 6:33 pm

The bracket now has Hawaii in the lower half of the bracket facing the AZ-WA winner at 3:30 Hawaii time. 🙄

    Go figure….

  361. Ralph June 4, 2010 6:34 pm

JMxxx are you bringing bread pudding to the KK?

  362. d1島 June 4, 2010 6:36 pm

    $64 question.

If Alabama was in the slot, would they be tossed around willy-nilly, too?

  363. 808ike June 4, 2010 6:36 pm

Ncaa has now changed UH into the lower bracket.

  364. Ralph June 4, 2010 6:39 pm

Washington/UA winner plays a DH, we are their second game, whomever they use as pitcher will have to get ready for Na Wahine about 5 after the completion of their game. UDUB at 8:30 am HST, then as I suspect, winners, they play us at 3:30 pm HST.

  365. d1島 June 4, 2010 6:41 pm

    Ralph,

Same thing in the other bracket….2nd game 1st pitch is 7 hrs after 1st game start.

  366. Ralph June 4, 2010 6:43 pm

I don’t know if a pitcher rather come back and pitch with little rest or cool off for 5 hours then crank it up again.

  367. gmahoney June 4, 2010 6:44 pm

To the staff of the Honolulu Advertiser. Thank you for your years of faithful service. For those who will be starting a new journey, good luck in your future endeavors. When a door closes, a window opens somewhere.

I await the start of the new version of the Warrior Beat, I hope I can find my way there. I’m a half full kinda person. I know we will all be just fine.

On another note: GO WAHINE! Doesn’t matter who we play, bring it!

  368. d1島 June 4, 2010 6:47 pm

the bracket as it now stands

    http://www.ncaa.com/brackets/2010/ncaa_bracket_DI_softball.html

  369. Ralph June 4, 2010 6:48 pm

D1 the crossover has been part of the world series, this is not the first. The HA had it wrong in posting the schedule early this week, and someone on the NCAA site was in error by posting UH in the upper bracket.

  370. d1島 June 4, 2010 6:52 pm

    UGa rallying now.

    Down 5-7

  371. jm2375 June 4, 2010 7:00 pm

Ralph – #362 – yes, but you’ll probably have to go thru a-joe to get some. 😆 🙄

  372. d1島 June 4, 2010 7:01 pm

    No nuff Dawg fuud….Tenn wins

  373. Ralph June 4, 2010 7:01 pm

Tennessee wins, I’d rather play Tennessee than Georgia, but first, got to take care of UDUB. I’m hoping they beat UA, coach Candrea has been complaining about composite bats and the number of home runs being hit and he wants to legitimize the game of softball by eliminating “hot bats”. I wonder if he complained when his UA set the record last year.

  374. RainbowCliff June 4, 2010 7:02 pm

Chopsueyboy, mahalo for all the quotes to “The Wizard Of Westwood” as his passing here in Los Angeles has “every” sport channel remembering his Legacy as the “GREATEST” coach of all time !

I had many former H.S. players that played for Wooden expressing their heart warmest grattitude of playing for this GIGANTIC figure who was the father of the 2-2-1 zone press, Inventor of the high post offense and the most intelligent, charming and humorous gentlemen that any one will ever meet !

Private memorial service is schedule with family members as a public service will be announce in the up coming weeks. With this public memorial service I will be attending with former Head Coach Jim Harrick who is a good friend and mentor to me during my H.S. Coaching days at Verbum Dei H.S. in which my former teammates Roy Hamilton and David Greenwood played for UCLA during that era in which the Bruins “DOMINATED” Division 1 College Basketball !

Never realize how one GIANT figure of a man could impact a whole city as his passing here has brought major attention across the United States as he was respected and beloved my many in the sports world.

Sad day of his passing but he lived 99 years and left an indelible impression for not his basketball legacy, Ten National Championships and the MANY Great players who played for him BUT his wealth and character as a “MAN” in which all that knew him left with his words of wisdom not only for basketball but for “LIFE” !

RIP Coach Wooden and mahalo for your “GREATNESS” !

  375. Ralph June 4, 2010 7:03 pm

  379. Ralph June 4, 2010 7:42 pm

Quite a few number 2 seeds lost in baseball today. Number 1 seed in regional play is in trouble, Fullerton down to Minnesota 3-1, top 9th with Minny batting

  380. koakane June 4, 2010 7:45 pm

people people no matter, we still have to keep winning to get to the finals, no worry, just win one game at a time. its a double elimination format so they are still in it. a hard hard road thru the loosers bracket so na wahine hitting and pitching just got to bear down, suck it up and play hard. coach has to pull out all the magic he can. not easy but can be done. add some haw’n mana, hiki no. we will find out as the games play out. balls to da walls babe

    tournament baseball gotta love it

  381. Ralph June 4, 2010 7:46 pm

BG always come late, then too late for him.

  382. papajoe2 June 4, 2010 7:46 pm

wasn’t former asst. coach Larry Farmer, a player for Wooden’s team?

  383. papajoe2 June 4, 2010 7:48 pm

  417. papajoe2 June 4, 2010 11:13 pm

the 3 fingers W for warriors cannot be because i watching Georgia and Washington now and they was doing it too. never thought the 3 fingers was for warriors. that’s kind of cool.

  418. Ralph June 4, 2010 11:17 pm

you notice Georgia using Easton bat, Wiggins bat looks like a Stealth model.

  419. papajoe2 June 4, 2010 11:20 pm

was Kelly’s catch a catch or error or even a hit? i know they called the batter out. supposedly went towards the dugout. watching the replay, Kelly caught the ball, her left hand touched the ground, followed by her body, then the ball popped out. I thought it was an out even though the results was the same. i hope they didn’t give her a error as it was a terrific try. an error would ruin her perfect defensive record as the season comes to a close. i wonder how many other regular players have a 1.000 fielding pct?

  420. papajoe2 June 4, 2010 11:35 pm

i thought after AA fouled off about 8 pitches, she should have moved up in the in the batters box because almost all the the fall balls were down the 3rd base side, getting just a little ahead of the pitches. although, after about 7 more, she hit it over the fence.Tracy, Kelly and Iwata and a lot of the other softbows also had a lot of foul balls down the 3rd base side too. we did have several, weak, ground outs to the 3rd baseman. give the pitcher credit though. i hope the R. Warriors adjust quickly tommorrow.

  421. papajoe2 June 4, 2010 11:36 pm

    #422 fall= foul

  426. Ralph June 4, 2010 11:55 pm

papajoe2 too many of the girls got “sawed off” inside with the screw ball breaking into their hands, lots of contact on the handle, those that got the barrel on the ball hit it foul. Our hits were change ups and curve balls on the outside.

  427. Slugger June 4, 2010 11:56 pm

    RIP, John Wooden.

I’m happy I got to hear him speak about building a team at a conference in SoCal. Must have been almost 14 years ago. I’d recommend his books to everyone, not just athletes or coaches.

ESPN’s No. 2 Friday Play of the Day: Alex Aguirre’s 17 pitch at bat in today’s game against UCLA ending in her HR.

  428. Ralph June 4, 2010 11:57 pm

  438. RainbowCliff June 5, 2010 5:52 am

papajoe2 post #383: Yes, Larry Farmer was a GREAT player for Wooden during that Championship run as he was part of the “Walton Gang” who won 88 straight games before losing to Notre Dame as Clay, Shoemaker and Carr played “BIG” with Digger Phelps coaching a masterful game !

Larry Farmer a gracious gentlemen had the Head Coaching position at UCLA but the shadow to over come Wooden success was to much for any coach to succeed as ‘national championships’ was the criteria as Larry Brown, Farmer, Gene Bartow, Walt Hazzard, Jim Harrick, Steve Lavin and now Ben Howland has far and between to get there with ONLY Jim Harrick winning the National Championship in 1995 as that was 11 years ago.

Parity is all over College Basketball and the elite players are playing all over the country as UCLA is not the lime light school as it once was.

Good morning to all of you as I head out for some good tennis and hopefully get back to watch your na wahines continue their magical journey as I thank you “Old Diver” for the dvd as it came yesterday delivered personally to me !

    Go Soft Bows !

I love this- Hurrah for the Fs!

    Today’s Virtue:

FRIENDLINESS is reaching out to others with warmth and caring. It is the willingness to be an intimate companion. Friendship is essential to our souls. We value ourselves enough to know that we deserve true companionship. We attract others by what we are willing to contribute. What we give we get. The presence of a friend can soothe us, unleash our laughter, amplify our joy and diminish our sorrow. Friends are compassionate witnesses to one another’s stories. We share our time, our attention, our love, and above all ourselves. We look upon strangers as friends we haven’t met yet. Friendliness is the best cure for loneliness.

Thanks for the share! I have a question a little off topic. I wanted to start a blog to share my experiences as well as work, but didn’t want it to be too salesy. Do you find your style works best with just sharing?

  487. San Marcos plumbers June 26, 2010 7:57 pm

Great post. Can I ask you a question? I want to start a blog as well that is why I was searching on the internet for blogs to use as examples, do you find you have to be perfect in your grammar to have people like what you write? I have been told I write like I speak, so I was wondering if that was a bad thing.

When regular readers talk about researching students loans the viewpoint is to find single mother welfare. It’s time to go the distance but you should decide how much time you can consistently assign to your single mother welfare activities.
