Cornerback set to join UH
Cornerback Terry Wilson, a 2009 graduate of Santa Monica High, is completing school work that will enable him to join the Warriors this summer.
Wilson scored four defensive touchdowns as a Viking senior in 2008. He has spent the past nine months attending West Oahu College. After this semester, he may transfer to UH-Manoa.
Wilson’s brother is Charles Gordon, who was with the Kansas City Chiefs for three years.

Former UH center John Estes is back in town. He weighs about 305, but because of his intensive workouts, appears to be thinner.
Another thing I did not know until yesterday: Chris Estes — John’s brother — is a member of the UH golf team.

On May 8, 1970 — 40 years and a day ago — Willis Reed hobbled onto the court, inspiring the New York Knicks to win Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
Now, two more best-of-seven rounds need to be completed before the start of the NBA Finals.

She made the most of a difficult life.
When she was 8, she chased after a ball, running into the street, where she was struck by a car. She suffered a fractured leg, and spent more than a year in rehabilitation. But that sparked an interest in occupational therapy. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, became a certified occupational therapist, once serving as department head at a New York hospital.
When she was 38, she became a widow, with three children. A few years later, she suffered a serious back injury that eventually required four surgeries and dozens of procedures.
In her mid-60s, she was diagnosed with a connective tissue disease. In her case, it led to hardening in her lungs and esophagus, making it difficult to breathe and swallow food. There was no cure and, even with medication, not much relief. She knew every breath could be her last. In her final months of her life, she found comfort in knowing she did her best, that her three kids were college-educated, and that her three grandchildren were on the right path, and that hot tea after a meal is one of life’s simple pleasures.
On this Mother’s Day, I recall my mother’s creed: Enjoy the moments.
firwst…and then, another cb???, a healthy one, I hope.
what about his stats!?…5’4″, and then what?
bwaaahahaha!!
According to Santa Monica High School’s website, Terry Wilson was listed at 5′ 7″, 170 pounds. I hope that the 2-inch rule doesn’t apply to that high school.
Terry could have grown taller since he graduated high school. Even if he did not, it is good to have more competition at CB.
The Estes family are all great people from what I could tell during my conversations with them. John’s older brother played football for Nevada and his younger brother golfs for UH, so they have a really athletic family.
Good morning!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Tsai-kettes!
It’s Wena’s first Mother’s Day as a grandma!! 😀
Welcome to the Warrior ohana, Mr. Wilson!
with that being said…..is it still permissible to tackle below the knees-o-what??
Good news about Wilson. Hope he’s a “baller”. If he is, the height won’t matter.
Colt Watch:
Brennan healthy
In addition to having the hip surgery this offseason, Colt Brennan had arthroscopic knee surgery some weeks back. This brings the total to four for Brennan since his last college bowl game. Brennan says he is now one-hundred percent healthy.
“I had a little set back when I reported, and I had to had my knee scoped” said Brennan. But now I’m back and healthy. I ready to bounce back and get back in it.”
From BGO
Welcome Terry Wilson!
Happy Mothers Day!
Re: Katahara joining Na Koa – this is an excellent choice. Very few have the passion, dedication, creativity and execution to make Na Koa successful. Don Weir took Na Koa to a higher level and Alvin will continue doing that. In his current position, he was responsible for the largest fund-raising effort in UH history, and the creation of a new Koa Anuenue magazine. Congrats!
Question – does this make his a Tsaiko? Honorary member?
ST,
Great tribute to your mother…
Wow Stephen,
Your mom is a fellow alumnus of Washington University in St. Louis? I had no idea. Yay, hip hip hooray! Go Bears!
We were and continue to be as dominant in Division III in M/W basketball as UConn in D1 and Stanford is in D1 M/W volleyball.
Any others out there from Washington University in St. Louis?
Btw, God bless your mom and all other moms out there today.
papajoe2,
I heard about that lottery winner when I was driving (3-hour drive one way, so I had a lot of time to listen to the radio!) to bring some special food to Momo’s sister on Wednesday. They said that the $266 million winner bought her ticket at a Hawaiian BBQ restaurant! Unfortunately, it apparently wasn’t bought by someone from Hawaii or a UH fan. They had a lot of information about the winner (much of it they just hinted at instead of giving too much detail) because her husband was recently laid off from one of the local TV stations in LA so many people in the LA media actually knew the winner.
It would have been nice if the $266 million lottery had been a UH fan…
ST,
A very touching tribute to your Mom. She must have been a great Mom.
I haven’t been doing the free play links, but if I had I would have posted this lottery-related link.
Woman won a $1 million jackpot in the NY lottery just 1.5 years after her brother won $1 million a year for life in the NY lottery, with both tickets bought at the same gas station. What is most interesting to me is that her brother is a London resident who gave his Mom $100 to buy lottery tickets during a visit to the US, which means that he does *not* have to pay federal tax on his lottery winnings. So, he gets $930k per year from his winnings–that is the lowest % of tax I’ve ever heard of from a lottery winner.
Beautiful, ST. Thanks for sharing your wonderful mom with us!
Re: Ferd’s column on Dave Shoji
I hope peoplE are not questioning Dave’s loyalty to UH. Its now off-season for the Wahine VB team and Dave saw an opportunity to work with his sons. He got the blessings from the administration and applicable coaches. I truly believe that all Dave wanted to do was take the opportunity to work with his sons; likewise for Chris M. My personal opinion, Dave is still for UH and will always be.
Good morning everyone! ST…you uplifted us with your story. Courage and love often comes in small (and large) packages…often called “mom”.
It’s a beautiful morning outside.
Thank you for the great story, Mr. Tsai!
Whoo-hoo!!!
Top 20!
Just need to make sure your littlest one knows all about her GREAT grandma, too!
Nice story ST.
Happy Mother’s Day!
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!!!
Happy Mother’s Day to all…
Terry Wilson, welcome to Warrior Nation!
from yesterdays posts:
d1 – your #131 & papajoe2 your #140 & al your #150:
Those who go away to play a sport, but returns to UH, I consider them “locals” who came home to represent the “home team”. Yes, the “Beast” is a Tsaiko and falls into this category. Others who turn their nose to UH, I feel differently and there have been many.
I have always felt that Punohou, St Louis & Iolani are truly ALL STATE sports programs as they secure players from outside of their district and public schools are at a MAJOR disadvantage because their players must be within district or get a District Exemption. Therefore, I am most happy when any public school beats the private schools.
On recruiting, as a coach, where do I draw the line to start, continue or stop recruting when a player and/or family tells me their child will never attend UH. For me, it is INSTANT.
wafan: are you sending over your most tasty scones to our house?
ST: Terry Wilson will have 4 to play 4 since this current year he is at UH-West Oahu?
A most Happy Mother’s Day to all Moms, past and present, throughout the world and especially to all the Tsaiko Moms – very special indeed!!!
and, to all the youngsters out there, you may be the smartest person in the world, the best athlethe in the world, the richest in the world, etc.,but remember, the toughest job in the world is being a good parent!
Happy Mother’s Day!
How was the PIAA golf tournament?
Sure hope there was a huge turnout and everyone had lots of fun, too!
wafan – ST musta kakaroached my scones! Ah well, TImes Coffee Shop fried rice and french toast were adequate substitutes.
Good morning everyone!
ST — today’s bio is the best one yet. Yes, enjoy the moments!
Happy Mother’s Day!
Happy Mother’s Day Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂
A very poignant remebrance, Stephen. When I consider you and your siblings, its easy to see that you folks had a great Mommy.
Welcome to the Warriors, Terry!
“remembrance” that should read above*
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, grandmas, great great grandmas, and single moms who try their best everyday to make life a more meaningful one for their children. Thank you very much!!!
sometimes got to eat humble pie and last nite, kudos to Punahou for their 7th championship in a row. OC16 did a great job on showing a good championship with the kids and coaches exemplifying good sportsmanship. Coach Jon, no worry, next year. Pono.
Happy Mother’s Day to everyone!
is there a difference of school loyalty when Coach Pat Hill, Fresno, used to come to our annual spring practice???? I think that this will truly help change how the wahines recruit and play the game. This past yr, evolution of how they attack and defend was most refreshing, and now the evolution of players is starting, so for Coach Shoji, I think this was most beneficial for UH and he got to see his son’s win the NCAA.
I wonder if Coach Ron Nomura will have his son attend UH????
morning tsaiko country, ditto bg’s comment about the beautiful day outside
yes yes a merry day to all the tsaikette women. enjoy yourselves and choose the most expensive meal, gift or whatever. you deserve it.
wafan the golf tourny is on tuesday 5/11
ahouse #25 I like you have a passion for UH sports and wish we could get all to stay but I disagree with you on one point. these are the children of hawaii and I will always consider them that, no matter if they play sports or choose to futher their education else where. case in point your boy is an outstanding chief in Vegas. we love him no less that one’s who went to kcc. the story of the prodigal son comes to mind. we need to show unconditional love and let the younging experience life. so ditto to al comments we are old proud papa’s
😉
whitey no humble pie necessary, baldwin battled to the finals and played hard. congrats to them for making it there. this team was a different one that I saw a few months back when they played in the Iolani tourny.
also congrats to the puns for making it 7 straight. a feat hard to come by now days.
More information about the Big 10 Network to answer a question that A-House had a couple of days ago. It is interesting to see the breakdown of what the Big 10 Network makes for states they have a team in vs. states where they have no team. This is bad for a school like Pitt since they aren’t needed since there is already another team in their state.
In addition to the fees charged for every cable/satellite subscriber, they make money off the commercials on the network. Even with a struggling economy, that business is booming:
The ACC apparently will be getting a new TV deal soon, possibly as early as this week.
The ACC might benefit from ESPN losing out on the NCAA basketball tournament.
One of the *assistant* coaches at South Carolina makes $200k more than their University’s President!
At least South Carolina’s Athletic Department is giving a lot of its profit to its University, so they can afford to pay their coaches well and still turn a profit.
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL!!!
Terry Wilson is a four-for-four guy.
HMD to everyone out there!
If you want to score at home — RPI wise — go to ncaa.com.
Then go to softball and follow a bunch more links.
It has the softball RPI.
nice. nice job on your mom’s tribute.
character building for the three of you.
happy mother’s day to all the gals out there!
al, Bulla and koakane–
Couldn’t agree with you more. 1 billion percent agree with you guys.
I told myself not to comment on this particular issue since I have mad my peace with it. But, it’s bothersome to read post(s) about Hawaii athletes not being called “sons of Hawaii” for that reason. Whatever the reason(s) behind their decision, they have just as much right to call themselves “sons of Hawaii”.
I guess, like myself and many others out there who decided to go away for college, are not entitled to call ourselves “sons of Hawaii”. Regardless of what others might think, I am a SON OF HAWAII
Happy Mothers Day To All Tsaiko and Hawaiian Mothers as I reflect with affection on my time spent and remembering them as they are truely ‘Remarkable and Beautiful Ladies’ !
Mr. Tsai, a wonderful write-up on your mom as from your words with wisdom and affection you told it as a “proud son” sharing her struggles and accomplishments to make it in ‘LIFE’ !
Of your previous posts refering to local athletes going away playing for other schools ALL I can say is that I know of them BUT if they are not playing for the “Big Green Machine” then we have “NOTHING” in common !
Once a Bow, ALWAYS a Bow as I bleed Hawaiian Green with NO remorse or regrets after 29 years as I was not born in Hawaii or have any polynesian gender from your WONDERFUL State BUT a love and compassion of the Aloha Spirit and Great Proudness of playing as a “Rainbow Warrior” in front of the GREATEST local fans in the world !
For those local athletes who played else where for what ever reason then they TRUELY missed out on playing for the home team as my memory of Hawaiian children “TREASURING” your autograph and older Hawaiian folks smiling with affection upon meeting you while playing for a ‘STATE’ who WILLS you with their heart and desire for you to “WIN” as that atmosphere alone is priceless and still lives with me today when I watch UH play !
Simply The Best, Better Then All The Rest !
University Of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, Go Giv Em Bows !
Stephen,
Wonderful bio about your Mom. Brought me to tears.
To me, Local Boys will always be Local Boys, whether they play for UH or take an opportunity to go to school on the mainland; whether they play for the Raiders or the 49ers; whether they are blue-eyed and blond haired or brown-eyed brunettes. They are still Our Boys. [humming…”I love those local boys”… thanks, Nalani]
Happy Mother’s Day to my mom and sisters! LOVE yas!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers or soon to be mothers out there!
Part of the research done in 2009 for a proposed student fee included accountability.
Although the specifics of the fee will not be worked out until after the Regents approve the concept, I can assure you that the money cannot be shifted around to use someplace else. Not only is it illegal but also doing so is very, very difficult to hide – especially at the University of Hawai`i. ANY kind of bad acts will have an enormous impact of funding from other sources – even if it doesn’t have anything to do with inter-collegiate athletes.
Please give me a few more days to recover from this STUFF that has really stopped me so that I can put together a brief report on the procedural steps required to set up the fund.
I’ll also provide an update on a couple of UH bills which are sitting on Da Gov’s desk for further action as well as the final budgetary cuts and their impacts on UH programs.
Basically, however, it’s not as bad as originally thought. What happens starting July 1 will require a full team effort: UH System as well as UH Manoa Administration AND faculty AND staff AND students both undergraduate & graduate AND alumni AND the business & professional communities AND the general public.
That means thee & me. For those of you on this blog who want to make UH sports programs financially secure, more productive, and, of course, winners – please take the time to get involved. Decision-makers are NOT mind-readers so you have to transmit your issues & concerns.
Think it can’t be done? When the Atheletic Department Administration was first approached several months ago about setting up a donation jar at UH softball games, the response was an over-whelming NO. A couple of weeks would go by and the request would be submitted again. A gradual attitude shift started taking place towards the end of March. Look what happened last weekend when Slugger & others actually carried out that first successful drive.
Now it’s time to follow up with the donation concept for next year while at the same time track the capital improvements projects at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium to put together an adminission fee – perhaps as early as the 2012 season.
With respect to men’s volleyball, I was provided with some very interesting information which needs to be double-checked. If it is true, then perhaps the Tsai-kos would like to take on the project.
As a mom on Mothers Day, I am at the age where I feel like all kids could be my kids – and I am happy to see them find success in their endeavors wherever they go to college, IF they go to college- or not.
It takes all kinds to make an interesting, loving and productive world and I wish them ALL well!
Re: Make Hawaii proud
What’s wrong with saying “make Hawaii proud”? President Obama is the prime example to that.
(#54) ditto
he doesn’t deserve to call himself son of hawaii. he’s the one who shows no aloha to the locals.
LizKauai,
I concur! I feel the same way. Actually, I feel like their Aunty at times, and their Mom sometimes.
Welcome to Terry Wilson!
I think most college football fans root are loyal to teams instead of individuals. So it’s not necessarily that a UH fan would have something against a local athlete going to Boise State; the UH fan wouldn’t foot for anyone who plays for Boise.
Must be a “spiritual” Mountain….it made my C-note disappear “like that”! 😆
….Off to Mo’s!
Stephen,
Very nice commentary for today.
Mrs. d1島 liked it!
ST– Really sweet! Mahalo for sharing. That was even better than Dallas Braden’s perfect game for my Oakland A’s!!! 😆
If a student is not asked to play here, you cannot blame them for going away.
If a student is asked to stay home but chooses to go away because they feel it’s a better opportunity, it’s no different than a student going away for because they feel the academic program of the other school is better for them than going to UH. In that case UH is at fault for not being perceived as the best place for the student. Blame the university, not the student.
Then there is the one who (as I heard) brought a UH cap and another school’s cap to the signing ceremony, then donned the cap of the other school and signed his letter of intent. That seems disrespectful, especially since his family earns money from UH. Had he just signed his letter from the other school, no harm.
The important thing is that they become good members of the community that they eventually live in, whereever that may be, as we can never have enough of them.
happy mothers day to all.
my mother always told me that no matter how old i get or how smart i think i have become that i will always be her little boy.
i know im one of the younger ones on this blog but looking back i cant believe how ive gone from little kid to hopefully a good man…and a lot has to do with mom’s guidance. boy does time fly.
to my mommy and all the mom’s out there working behind the scenes in our life, bless you and thank you.
Perhaps, we are sharing symantics about “local” players and “sons of Hawaii”.
Absolutely, those who chose to ply their trade at another school are still “local” and “sons of Hawaii”, but I would not cheer for them whether that school is playing against Hawai or another team. Families of the many local players on the mainland are fortunate that the Advertiser published the “home grown” report all these years. Will the new paper continue? If no, there will be absolutely no “public” information as the mainland “papers” are very uninterested in high school sports compared to Hawaii. They are consumed with “pro sports” and the USCs, UCLAs, etc.
For Koakane’s analogy, Masaboy chose to pursue a culinary career and chose to do it at KCC where he attained an Associates degree in Culinary and Patisserie, worked at Mid-Pac Country Club for 3 years, and decided to seek additional training/experience in Las Vegas.
This is quite different from a student athlete who did not play for Hawaii, but another school on the mainland. There is a distinct difference for one who WANTED to play for Hawaii and one who DISSES UH.
We, A-House ohana, have the greatest respect for the Stutzman brothers who made an early commitment to UH and held on to their convictions. One has done UH proud and Stutz2 may be even better than older brother Craig.
UH softball:
NCAA RPI: http://web1.ncaa.org/app_data/weeklyrpi/2010WSBrpi1.html
Kazz posted this earlier in the week.
ESPN commentators at the Georgia vs Texas SB game mentioned Texas ranking #12 and RPI at #8 puts them in a good position to host a super regional and how important the home field advantage is in sb to have the fans there. They also mentioned that the SEC and Big 12 success in football has allowed the schools to build beautiful venues (stadiums and locker rooms) for the softball teams. As Al mentioned in one of his pieces, a lot of what happens at the UH athletic complex revolves around coach mac and his football program-raise the attendance at the fb games, actual butts in the seats, the rest of the programs will benefit with better amenities.
UH will play the winner of the Boise State vs La Tech winner on thursday.
Happy Mothers Day!
SB super regional sites from last season: 4 of 8 sites at the SEC, 3 in Pac 10 and 1 at Michigan. Same with the 16 regional sites, primarily in the SEC (6), Pac 10 and Big 12. I think UH can handle Texas in the West rather than head to Washington or Arizona. But the NCAA has done strange things, last season they sent Washington to Amherst, Massachusetts for their regional. UCLA and Arizona were seeded higher than Washington.
Congrats to Terry and best to you for getting your academics in order for the transfer…awesome!
It is indeed a beautiful day to celebrate the most special women in our lives. What a wonderful tribute to your mom, ST. And a shout-out to those in the service industry (and media)…thank you for working today so that others may enjoy Mother’s Day.
Sons of Hawaii, Hawaiian Sons, Hawaiian Sun Juice……………
on this day my friends, on this day known as mother’s day, let us lay down the semantical soliloquy, the war of words, the connotative confrontations…..
enjoy mothers day with our families, no need for posturing or positioning, just love on our ohana
as for ‘the beast’; we thank you for all the love and support, but he’s just pursuing his dream, whether that’s good or bad, it is HIS choice, it is what it is. hopefully his aspirations, hopes and dreams will not fall in the bone yard filled with the should’ves, would’ves and could’ves……..
make memories, make memories, make memories…….
IMUA WARRIORS
tomorrow we can pick up the discussion, but today…….let’s make the best investment of your time possible……with your family…………..mahalo for showing all of our children what is really important, family & friends.
Personally, I think deciding who is a “Son of Hawai’i” and who is not is a very slippery slope.
If we use attending and or playing for UH as the definition of a “Son of Hawai’i”, we exclude a *lot* of locals who went away for school, some who only left to get an education and then returned.
Safe to say, it would have been nice if the Hawai’i kids on Stanford’s team had chosen to stay at UH and play, but a Stanford education is an enormous opportunity, similar in many regards to an Ivy League school.
If a local kid and his parents want make the sacrifices needed to achieve such a goal, more power to them.
Are we going to kick the kids and maybe even Shoji himself “out of the club” because Stanford won the national championship? Would we even be having this debate if UH had beaten Stanford in the first place?
Who do we call a “Son of Hawai’i”?
Ask their Mommys. They would know. 😉
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! 🙂
My wish is that wherever a player goes, the opportunity will not be wasted.
If you have a full scholarship, take every class possible. Also, take some fun classes. The beauty of UH is that there’s a flat fee whether you take a science class or an art course. If a school is going to pay your way, maximize it. There are a lot of people who can’t afford college.
ST ~
Any truth to Vince Tapolo & Drew Uperesa being roomates at UH come this fall? Both transfers are in under the radar.
Big bird on the wire also says these two Jumbo Jacks will anchor the Oline if given the opportunity to rip it up at the next walk-on.
Vince is 6’4″ and 310 Lbs. I’m not sure of the Uperesa kid’s present measurements, but his family has been known to play a little football once in awhile.
Thats an exciting post, Kekoa. I wonder who the big bird on the wire is? 🙂
COLT WATCH:
http://www.csnwashington.com/pages/rich_tandler
“After 10 months on a roller coaster, Colt Brennan is back. He again dons the number he wore during his record-setting career at Hawaii, and he has freedom to do what works for him when he’s passing. Even though he still will have to compete hard to get a spot on the final roster, Brennan says that the pressure is off and he is having fun again…”
DPK ~ This bird on the wire is the same one that called me to let me know of the shooting up at Roundtop this afternoon.
An FBI agent and supposedly an HPD officer or impersonater are involved. Shots fired, still under investigation of course.
Liz ~ CB is back in the saddle again! Ya-Hoo! Circle the wagons, give him enuff protection to fire away!
Happy Mother’s Day to all you Moms out there. Just returned from dinner at Fogo de Chao (in Wash DC) celebrating Mother’s Day and my sister’s graduation from grad school. All I gotta say is WOW! While it is very pricey, this is definitely a Tsai-ko eatery. While there is a salad bar available (many different cheeses and vegatables and other stuff), skip it. This place is a Brazilian Steakhouse where they come to your table with skewers of 15 different cuts of meat including filet mignon, leg of lamb and chicken. Plus its all you can eat. While I tried all 15, the filet was the best. They also have a cheesy bread puff thing that was the most incredible bread ever. Whew… as good as the food was, I think I’ve eaten enough meat for a while.
CB15 — believe!
I’ve been also hoping to randomly run into CB while here in DC. No luck
dj . . .
Any CB 15 jerseys?
32 wake ups.

Kekoa-
Just watched the news about that Tantalaus shooting. I wonder if the impersonator might be the same one spotted on the UH campus lately.
GO COLT!
Howzit Tsaikos!
GO COLT!!! HTTR!!
Yikes! Just saw the story on the Tantalus shooting. Used to live up that way, although on the other side (Round Top Dr).
Just got back from a seeing a great production at MPI. Hard to believe it was written by teenagers. Topped it off with dinner at Outback. *burp*
Oh yeah, Div I State Softball tournament starts Tuesday at UH. Go OWLS!!
Like Bulla said, Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms.
We can continue fighting tomorrow. I like fighting, it gets the blood going.

My last mana’o on the subject.
IMHO whether a family or student decides to stay or go away for their career, education or sports experience I hold no grudge or ill feeling twords them. If they plan to leave Hawaii and pursue a better life away from the 808 so be it. It is their life choice. I just want to see everyone getting an opportunity to do what is best for them to succeed. In the long run is this not what we want for our own and should wish for others.
Any how this is my feelings and by no means is intended to offend anyone. E kala mai and as many have expressed Happy Mothers day to all.
hmmmm. my research indicates that terry wilson scored four touchdowns indeed. however, one rushing and three by receptions.
pride.
what?

whoa.

just got back from mother’s day dinner at chai’s bistro.
quite an elaborate spread including king crab legs, oysters on a half, jumbo shrimp tempura on a stick chai’s style, etc. too good.
and melveen leed played throughout the evening. the molokai tita still got em.
speaking of tita’s, sitting next to us was tita ahuna and family.
Re-Ferd’s article today on Coach Shoji showing his true colors
Pathetic. Ferd shoots himself in the foot. Takes a shot at Coach Shoji. Whereas he should take aim on other things, like Benson, or JD scheduling Lamar, or the volleyball ref that can’t see…or quite bluntly he should take aim on his next career, too.
I don’t know what Ferd is thinking to make it sound like Coach Shoji is consorting with the enemy, Stanford volleyball, when it’s apparent that he’s there in attendance at the championship match watching, cheering and coaching along his two boys.
He asked and received permission in advance. All parties involved know Coach Shoji’s love for his two boys, where his heart is at–his boy’s successes and, mostly, that these opportunities don’t come around very often. In fact it’s very, very rare.
Personally I think it’s bad for Ferd to make everyone blink. Or to allow for any unneeded second guessing on Coach Shoji’s motives for attending the match.
It’s insulting for Ferd to even insinuate that Coach Shoji is masking any deviance.
Any other writer would have crafted a different story line. One that’s full of superlative for Coach Shoji and his two boys. One that speaks of Coach Shoji with reverence. Not one, like Ferd’s, which is maddening and with undertones.
Great news for Colt and his many adoring Hawaii fans – especially LizK!
Better news, if true, that UH will benefit from 2 more transfers to their football program!
Great way to end a happy Mother’s Day!
is it me??
okay i read ferd’s column about dave shoji’s opportunity to voluntarily participate in his two sons volleyball program which happened to be stanford.
but, the column was not slamming dave, i thought instead it told of what it was all about, dave’s struggle to do what every father may have done albeit a once in a lifetime opportunity.
however, dave did what was “pono” and in the end declined the opportunity because of who he is and who he represents. i thought he did the honorable thing, the “samurai” thing, and ferd was just pointing out what a great man he really is.
will k5 prevent chris maclachlin from future broadcasts because in the end he couldn’t walk away from the very same voluntary asst coach at stanford and be able to coach his son and his team?
will you no longer listen to his expert color commentary at the next hawaii volleyball match?
if you have ever coached your kids before…wouldn’t it be real hard to walk away from one last chance to coach your son/daughter in their final season of college.
dave did because deep in his heart he knew that wasn’t the proper thing to do. i applaud him even further now.
recruiting…
this guy has some interest in hawaii. i’d be offering him yesterday. before he gets away.

this part here
as about his former boss’s idea. Though Donovan said Wade was agreeable, provided Shoji pledged not to be involved in Stanford’s recruiting
cmon. isnt this insulting Coach Shoji, like he would do such.. why would ferd insert this quote…why? Coach Shoji made it clear he’s there for his two sons and to include this statemenmt doesnt make sense
btw, that #7, wr is available the following year since he was only a soph in the clements video.
and oh yes, la habra is where the running back who got away is from.
bluefintuna….true. but, everyone has there own insecurities, wade included. i think ferd was just reporting the facts as they were.
i know shoji would never do such a thing, not unless a recruit was snubbed by a hawaii program first and then came to seek shoji’s expert opinion as what or where his options were.
High school football coaches in Southern California are getting salaries in the 6 figures now–Texas coaches (at the bigger schools) were there for a number of years already.
Need to make a correction on the 2 transfers I mentioned above. Uperessa, is already on the team. They are going to be roomies.
The other O-lineman, Vince Talolo is transferring in. He will have to prove his worth as a walk-on. He certainly does have the size we need. Now it’s all about the rest of the package.
Cue Pride.
Before the UH-Stanford playoff match, Shoji ushered me to the side, and showed me his jacket, which was on his seat. It had an “H” button. He also said he made sure he wore neutral colors for the match.
There’s no question that Shoji is a proud father and, also, a proud member of the UH family. (His wife, a former UH basketball player, wore a Stanford sweater.)
But for appearance sake, it probably would have been better if the only UH matches he attended were against Stanford. I’m sure UCLA or Irvine wondered if he was doing advance scouting. He probably wasn’t, but why be put in an unnecessary position?
al,
true or false
I hate the fact that my son eats candy
is it harmless statement? yes?
whereas
I hate my son because he eats candy
is this a harmful statement? yes?
I hate the fact that some blue chippers got away
is it a harmless statement? yes?
I hate the blue chippers that got away
is a harmful statement? yes?
When I was reading some of the comments last night most seem to be acknowledging that they really (and its true) hate the fact that some blue chippers got away…which I dont think is throwing anybody under the bus
whereas by saying I hate the blue chipper that go away is throwing someone under the bus i agree
see the difference?
so i really dont see it wrong for someone to say I hate the fact that some blue chippers got away
On a much smaller scale, my wife and daughter played in an alumni volleyball match against the high school of which I’m the Parent-Teacher Organization president.
I rooted for the alumni team.
Re: Bluechippers.
People can try, but it’s difficult to change the way one feels. As Popeye says: I am what I am.
What’s wrong is to act on those feelings.
It’s OK to not like a player for going away, but as long as you don’t do anything about it — boo, yell at the parents, post embarrassing pictures on Facebook — then there’s no harm. This is America. We don’t legislate feelings.
ST ~ Traitor!
So what’s the scoop on the transfer status of the O-lineman, Vince Tafolo? The birdee is really pissed at me for screwing up the spelling of his name, so I hope that at least he will be a legit candidate for the line.
I would hate to be in D. Shoji’s shoes. Torn between what is right for the university and as a father. In my opinion, blood is thicker than water. A father has got to do what he has to do. You can never go wrong in choosing family first, never. Now, I understand why some would feel betrayed about the idea. The bottom line is he didn’t do it.
Kekoa:
Transfer: Not sure. I’ll check on it tomorrow.
Traitor: I’m PTO president of a school I didn’t attend. Now if they were playing against Roosevelt …
…I’d still root for the family. Family comes first.
Kekoa your big bird spoke “funny kind” pidgin so the spelling of his name can change with the wind conditions or the maka pea in your ear, or was that old primo in the eaya.
The word HATE is a very strong word that should not be used lightly unless you really mean it. Just saying.
Nitey nite and tsweet Mothers Day Dreams!
Dang. I HATE mosquitos! Oh well. Byproduct of the rain we’ve been having lately.
COLT WATCH:
Nice long article:
http://web.warpathconfidential.com/?p=3484
“I am really enjoying myself right now. I’m really enjoying these coaches. They are kind of a younger coaching staff, which I relate really well to. And they said; ‘hey, we want you to be you. No more changing the release. No more of that. You be you and you do what made you successful and we’re going to develop you in line with some small mechanical things.’ So I get to go back to being myself which is really exciting for me.”
five stars for war path girl!
Zorn should have asked June, can the kid play, nuff said.

ralphie…so we gonna gather at your place?

Hey Al, isn’t that guy who owns Chai’s the owner and chef that the Feds wanted deported as an alien.
Al check out ESPNU now, FSU vs La Tech, check out FSU softball stadium. all class. can’t say FSU losing money to be able to afford a nice stadium for softball.
hahaha…yup.
but, he puts together a mean eatery.
and he is a very nice and humble man.
now you know why courtney senas is going to fsu for college.
Senas will be spending a lot of money on airfare, its a long way from Honolulu to Atlanta to Tallahassee. Must be at least 14 hours of flt time to atlanta.
it’s about $1200 one way non stop from HNL to Atlanta, possible for better pricing by shopping around, but that’s what I paid one way from Chicago to HNL for my daughter. I told her that her round trip ticket cost more than a year at UH West Oahu. Good luck to Courtney, I’m sure she knows that her scholarship doesn’t cover transportation cost, too bad she couldn’t find a west coast school she likes.
Good Monday morning!
Hoping everyone has an easy day!!!

Online shopping is rapidly becoming the first choice of people in the world for modernized or traditional shopping. Gradually, online shopping is being accepted as the new and fashionable way of shopping. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
