Cutbacks
Head coach Greg McMackin said UH will pare the active roster by 30 to 35 players to make room for recruits, transfers and preferred walk-ons joining the Warrirors this summer. The NCAA limits training-camp rosters to 105 players, although that number may expand on the first day of a school’s fall semester.
The position coaches will meet with their players this week.
McMackin said he will not release a depth chart nor the identities of the cut players. He said there is a possibility some will be added to the training camp roster, and an even better chance some will asked back when the roster-limit is lifted.

Evaluation of Miami’s rookie camp has a nice note about RGM.
So, to make Miami’s active roster RGM has to beat out a WR out of USC who was drafted in the 3rd round by Miami’s current management. RGM is the underdog who has to earn everything on his own because the 3rd round draft pick will be given the benefit of the doubt if things are close.
The good news is that RGM has Bess helping to teach him the offense and RGM can earn a spot on the practice squad and be ready if/when one of the other WRs is injured or struggles.

Oregon’s Athletic Department made a *slight* profit even though they are one of the rare D-IA schools without a student fee…but they do have over $1 million from Oregon’s lottery and Knight’s money.
Hopefully the coaches will see that RGM is Bess with a bit more speed.
ST has asked a number of times how UH’s Athletic Department’s expenses could have grown so quickly under HF. This article mentions 2 big factors in Athletic Department expenses: salaries of coaches and tuition increases. Both of these factors definitely apply to UH’s Athletic Department–we can just look at UH’s tuition increases over the years and UH coaching salaries to see be big trend upwards.

As I understand it, in the old days, the athletic department would get a certain number of tuition waivers, say, 90 or so. Then the athletic department would pay for the remaining number. A few years ago, UH decided to monetize the tuition. So now there is an exchange of money, at least on the books. If I’m not mistaken, the athletic department gets either reimbursed or credited for the number of scholarships that used to be considered tuition waivers. So that should be a wash on the books, right?
Or at least if it drives up the expense it would, similarly, increase revenue, no?

It doesn’t matter to me how the frikk he throws the ball as long as he gets it where it needs to go on a consistent basis, which we all know has been proven. Too bad they got McNabb, cause if not Colt would have a chance to start. Well, if he’s a backup and considering McNabb is an injury prone headache, Colt may just get that chance this year…cause I mean seriously Rex Grossman…ah c’mon!

I remember one (anal)yst stating that Colt’s throwing motion isn’t the problem and a good quarterback is one who can get the ball where it needs to go regardless if it’s pretty or not. I mean shute I’ve even seen Peyton Manning throw from all over the place…over the top, side arm, 3/4 release, etc…nobody talks crap about him…

Even more than that, he is one the finest men I have ever had the priviledge to know, and I am proud to call him a friend. In Stephen Tsai, I know I have a friend in the media who truly cares about me and my life beyond UH sports.There are countless others here who feel the same way, and make no mistake, Stephen Tsai is the “straw that stirs the drink” here.
Becaue of this blog, the Honolulu Advertiser has becom an important part of my life. With that in mind , I say again:

Article in the main New Jersey newspaper about the Jets signing 2 undrafted free agent LBs including Brashton. The only thing I don’t like about this article is that their Defensive Coordinator praises the *other* undrafted rookie LB and seems to indicate that he’ll make their fall camp but he doesn’t say anything about Brashton.
Nice note about undrafted free agent rookies.
The Jets’ head coach couldn’t remember the Alabama LB’s name, but he singled him out for praise. I’m guessing that the Jets won’t keep 2 rookie free agents at LB, so this is Brashton’s competition.

Yet to be tallied into Hawaii’s score is the womens softball team winning the WAC title which should add eight points to Hawaii score
That would give Hawaii 58.00.
Still to be determined for Hawaii’s overall score are the number of points mens golf, womens outdoor track and baseball can gain.
For me I like seeing Hawaii climb the ladder. It’s exciting.
In the race for the Cup, in past years, Hawaii hasn’t done so well.
For some schools the emphasis in winning the Cup is a motivation tool for all their teams and athletes in striving to do well.
Therefore Hawaii, someday, needs to win the Cup, so all the athletes on all the teams can end up swelling with school pride. This feeling needs
mushrooming, like it does at Boise.
To the school’s athletic site I checked the archives and typed in Commissioner Cup with negative results. I checked the tabs with negative results. I think that since there’s so many pluses associated with having school’s athletes and teams striving to climb the ladder and win the cup. Or the race. It needs to be accentuated more on the school’s athletic site.
Wish we could stay at 49 responses…oh well, too late.
Re: WAC Commissioner’s Cup – it’s too biased. I wouldn’t put much stock in it. The more sports a school competes in, the more points you get. The more schools that participate in a sport, the more points you get. The scores should be weighted and averaged. It’s a wonder B$U doesn’t win it every year, they compete in everything except baseball.

Wahine WAC Offensive MVP 2010, Jessica Iwata

Tough one for me to think about, but how can anyone not justify this? This freshman has been quietly under the radar to her fellow teammate and the LOCK for 2010 WAC Freshman of the Year, Kelly Majam, but while other capable WAC pitchers have done not too bad of a job pitching around Majam, Iwata has made them pay. Again, I may get some “flack” for this choice, but it is a hard one to chose and it may sound contradictory, but while I believe Majam and Iwata will be nominees for WAC Freshman of the Year this year, Majam SHOULD earn this award based on her overall play in the outfield and at the plate. Both girls have quite the arm, but Majam still has YET to have an error marked against her so far.
Wahine WAC Defensive MVP 2010, Katie Grimes.
No, this is not just senior night nostalgia speaking here, well, a little, but the ever-so stoic and the steady form that has been Katie Grimes over the course of her entire UH career has not changed and with a new pitcher in Kaia Parnaby to work with, she(Grimes) has not waivered. Having to make all the calls for her pitchers, Grimes is part “B” of the pitching success of this team. With a runner on 3rd, 2 outs, and a successfully fielded grounder making it’s way back to home, you know you can trust in Grimes.
Wahine WAC Most Improved Player, Stephanie Ricketts.
It sounds funny at first, but those that have followed the team from last season and all the way through this season knew that Ricketts had to be the “one” come WAC play. With a well-documented and discussed slow start at the beginning of the non-conference season, many were high on the true freshman Kaia Parnaby, and rightfully so. Parnaby was headed in one direction but at the same time, we didn’t know where Ricketts would head in the other, but Ricketts started finding her way. The Ricketts of old showed herself in games against Stanford and UW and just dominated WAC play and as the WAC season moved on, you could see her repetoir develop further or at least return to what it was from last season with her inside pitches, screwballs, and just plain ole HEAT down the middle.
Wahine WAC MVP, Kelly Majam.
Ok I had to mention her name. But again, who wants to argue the overall addition to the outfield and the batting order she has made. A complete hitter, outfielder, and pinch runner all in one. She has strolled through to the UH all time home run leader record and has quietly, by national recognition’s sake ( 🙄 ) to lead (tied) the nation in home runs. She has been softball’s “Colt Brennan” and through numerous news appearances and interviews, she might as well have drawn more of the public to the RWSS all by herself starting with the SJSU series. Her name being called up to the plate draws cheers from those that probably can’t even think of another name in the Wahine lineup, but hopefully they’ll catch on. Her walk out song “The Professional” couldn’t have been more perfect as if it was performed specifically for her. Game face and all, Coolen and UH marketing couldn’t have created a better athlete even if they could.
The “AUWE” Award goes to all those freakin’ youth softball parents that have no control over their kids. Not ALL of the youth softball kids were out of control, but man… For me, it all started back in the LaTech series in that Friday night game, where you had about 8 kids throwing softballs at each other against the front row fence on the 3rd base side and as one “parent” comes by, we think that they are gonna tell them to sit down because people can’t see, nope!!! They tell them to stand there so they can be on TV.
(Sheesh, this kind of complaint sounds like something my parents would say, but I guess it’s a sign I am getting older…)

The tournament is in Las Cruces and as the Fresno State Softball Blogsp… ERRR.. I mean, the WAC Softball Blogspot has said OVER AND OVER AGAIN, it’s at altitude and suits the Wahine perfectly. Well, tough ____!
Now the reason I singled out Parnaby specifically really has nothing to do with her only. It’s more on how Coolen will decide to use her in this double elmination format. It wasn’t too odd to me that Coolen didn’t pull Parnaby in the second game of the series, but if the series was tied 1-1 and Parnaby was in the same situation in the third game, then yes, I can see her being pulled. With the Wahine earning a 1st round bye in the WAC tournament, I don’t know if Parnaby will start any of the games, but if she does, expect a very short leash on her if things get the slightest bit out of control. I expect Coolen to put the WAC tournament completely on Ricketts’ shoulders.
Kaia Parnaby is young. A true freshman and I think she deserves a ton of credit for what she has done for us this season. Bob Coolen will not feed her to the “wolves”, and I do NOT mean Nevada, but he wanted to push her to see what she was made of and what that assessment is, is something I am NOT qualified to assume. Yes we lost that game 9-7, but in the long run, as Jessica Iwata mentioned, should only help them overall.
Overall, I am pleased to see that the Wahine really look like a complete team at this time. Their fielding has improved and their outfield, which hasn’t really been tested all year, proved to be a formidable trio that can cover good ground and can make the throws needed.

That’s pretty serious. Especially if what’s purported is true.
But everyone wants to hide it, right?
Under the guise of personal, family and private issues UH and the media chooses to shelter the star quarterback.
Another player in a similar circumstance, especially a minority, would face the repercussions and be further ostracized. But not Moniz. Nope.
Fair? Probably not. Other schools would have kicked him out. Other team’s coaches wouldn’t have tolerated this either. If he was in the military he would have faced a court hearing.
Yet here at Manoa a few spring practices he’s kept out of and then every things back to normal.
A microcosm of what’s wrong with our society is playing right before our eyes, which I imagine the other players on the team would agree with this statement.
Any thing new on the coaching staff?

Maybe, years from now, it will be “public knowledge”, but for now it is closed.

I think the MOniz situation is a bit different from others because he did not do something that got him in the news or courts. From all intents in purposes, whatever he did was probably pretty damn messed up…..but not illegal. That is what it seems like anyway. Just like Malcolm lane…and Graunke for that matter………they did not do anything illegal so whatever they had to tend to was labeled as “personal matters.” Unlike JP Davis who actually found himself in court over some serious allegations. His mug was plastered all over the news. I sure wish they spent the same amount of media coverage on Davis’ situation when all of his charges were eventually dismissed. But we all know that did not happen.

Bryant Moniz is the closest equivalent to a secured starter that we have right now. Even though the QB competition was opened in the spring, we all knew that Moniz was pretty much the #1 guy to beat out.
Would the alleged situtation be handled differently at another school? In my opinion, NOPE.
Would SC have kicked out Barkley? NOPE.
Would OSU have kicked out Pryor? NOPE.
Is Oregon going to revoke Masoli’s scholarship??? NOPE!!! Now he gets a nice redshirt year as a “suspension”. 🙄

me mind not behaving lately – actually, for a long time now!
W-Doc or someone else can probably confirm/correct this but, the $5,000,000.00 given to UH hasn’t even been touched yet.
The new turf was paid for in full by funds appropriated by the Legislature and released by the Governor.
The TOTAL cost of the COMPLETE Clarence TC Ching Athletic Complex was quoted around $10 million back in 2008. The $5 million given to UH by the Ching Foundation was given on some sort of agreement that the UHAD would fundraise/match the amount donated to ensure the COMPLETE complex would be built. In 2008 it was given a 2013 completion date.
I have no idea as to where UH is on matching that $5 million at this time.
Someone said once that the $2 million promised to UH via the James Bolte Charitable Trust in 2008 “counts” towards the balance UH is supposed to match against the Ching Foundation donation.
Can anyone confirm this?
Wwith Moniz taking time off, it gave Austin, Graves, Shutter, and Neilson great experience at QB – would have been a lot different if Moniz was at Spring Ball!!
That being said, I regress to my fears that UH will face USC without a “seasoned” QB – top 4 must now make that extra push during “off-season” training to be much better than the end of Spring Ball.
Should Moniz be back for Fall camp, it will only bolster the Qb position, but he will have to “earn” the right to be # 1 and hope the entire team will support Coach Mack’s and Rolo’s decision.
Will the 2 former Punahou DB’s come in 2011 as they must sit out one year? “walk-on” status in Jan 2011? Hear of anyone else who will go this route to don the Black and Green?

Kazz…#82. The $5 million appropriation is to UH for plans, design, and construction for improvements (other than the field turf that was already completed) to the Clarence TC Ching Complex….
and the total money that is in the budget is itemized as $10 million ….$5 million in General Obligation, or GO, Bonds…and the other $5 million is the match from the private funds (i.e. Clarence Ching Foundation).
and really, that appropriation hasn’t changed from last year.

So is anybody pushing the idea for a beginning of the season “bowl” game in Hawaii involving the Warriors. Maybe the Sheraton bowl can have dual bowls. One in the beginning, opening the college football season and one on Christmas day or eve. UH or the bowl committee could then pick their opening season opponent and have a choice of the premier teams. “Bowl Game” would add $$$ for incentive and an extra game for opponents. The game would be played before most schools open so it wouldn’t effect study or classroom time. I know that there already is a season opening game but, how can anybody refuse a Hawaii bowl game unless they scared.

The rules do *not* allow for bowl games at the beginning of the season. If they did, the bowl games would have already locked in Texas, Alabama, Florida, USC, etc…the bowl system would not go for UH when the other schools would bring in a lot more viewers and $$$.

Garret, thanks for your 411. I just thought with the Warriors getting a hard time to schedule big name schools at the end of the year, we could push for an exemption from the NCAA to do this. Thinking outside the box, with the football season now ending later, maybe the season could start in the summer and end on New Years or Christmas. If it ends earlier, the student athletes will have more time for finals instead of preparing for a bowl game. Got to go to a meeting but your ideas are welcomed.

Instead of worrying about money and scholarships we should lower some of the cost of the coaches. We have heard this before, the Coach at Boise gets paid exponentially less then McMackin. Does this make any sense at all? UH has not proved to be a power D1 at all sense JJ left. We are now looking to give local kids scholarships and that is great, BUT we need to address the biggest problem of all, Coach Mac. I have heard rumors from former coaching staff at UH that they think he is the problem with UH and have heard from others that previous schools he coached at were pleased to see him leave, things will not get better with him here, thats the truth.

we can all have positions on what happened in the past. We have what we have. If Mac cannot perform on the field, true, histroy as stated above would have repeated itself and we would have a basis to call for his release.
Lets see what he does this year. If we get a repeat of what we saw last year, then we can start calling for his resignation. If he is successful as we hope he would be, we can see that the program is moving in the right direction.
True, lets just hope and hope and hope that we don’t say every year, “to wait for next year” and just do something about it.

This is an example of the change in the newspaper industry and their need to keep costs down to a minimum. Gannett’s 6 newspapers in New Jersey are using articles by a New Jersey Devils employee instead of paying one of their reporters to cover that pro hockey team. Having a team’s employee write the stories covering the team seems like a good way for a team to get PR in those 6 newspapers, but can that really be considered unbiased journalism?
If there is a reporter or two that might be available soon, I wonder if there would be money for UH to get stories and video on their website to enhance coverage of UH teams? Or, maybe the HSA would want to cut costs and might run stories written by the UH employee?

Why would the NCAA give UH an exemption to have a bowl game to start the season? Teams have to qualify for bowl games and they obviously won’t have the 6 or 7 wins required when the season hasn’t even started yet.
You could be thinking about those special nationally televised games that TV sets up early in the season…kind of like how BSU is playing Virginia Tech at a neutral site to start the season. The teams that are highly ranked and of national interest get those games, those are the ones that the TV networks will pay to show since they will get the ratings. UH could have gotten those types of games in past seasons (ST mentioned that JJ wanted to start the 2007 season with an ESPN game against Texas Tech to help fill out the schedule but HF wasn’t interested), but not after the last 2 seasons.
The Hawaii exemption is already a big benefit for UH…though extending the regular season to 12 games and having conference title games makes getting the extra game less useful for other teams. If all conferences expand to 12 or more teams and have championship games, then UH would not be able to get anyone to play to end the season. Even the D-IAA teams wouldn’t be available since they have a playoff system.
Remember, these are *student* athletes, starting the season during the summer would mean that they would need to attend school all summer and try to get football taken care of also. Classes are so compressed during the summer that half the team would have their GPA killed when UH goes on one of those 11-day road trips that they have early every season.
Also, TV ratings are much, much lower during the summer. That means that everybody would earn less money, and TV money is a HUGE part of the revenue for a lot of schools.
Football in a lot of the country would NOT work out too well during the summer. Attending games in July and August in the South would be horrible for players and the fans. Plus, families take trips then and so you’d have much lower attendance at games. The students are away from campus during the summer, which means that you’d lose student attendance at those games…I know that not too many UH students attend games now, but in much of the country you are talking about 10,000 to 20,000 students going to every game that would not be able to attend games in the summer.
I do like the out-of-the-box thinking, though. I just wanted to shed some light on why these things haven’t been done already.
We also can’t just think about what works for Hawaii…it has to work for the majority of the schools also.

Gonzalez was hurt most of last season, played some at SS, 3rd and pitched. She’s finally healthy and is playing 3rd on a regular basis for the first time, Warwick held the position for 4 years and graduated last season.
You’re right, Ralph. The UH AD office’s marketing person, John McNamara, also needs to get ads out in the paper, TV, radio, as well.
Don Weir posted a Cinco de Mayo celebration at Tiki’s in Waikiki on Wednesday raising some funds for UH football. All of the tequila drinkers, your elbows are requested at Tiki’s for deep bending exercises. I think a % of marguerita sales goes to UH.
With the merger of the HA and SB and HAM running the transition, we may not get as much summer coverage of football workouts as in the past, coach Mac has to create interest in the fb program and excitement to improve ticket sales. USC on the schedule helps but we need fans interest in all the games.
I expressed that to him about student attendance at men’s basketball. He pretty much said he was content with the media coverage they already had.
Coach Mac isn’t directly responsible for fund raising or ticket sales for football, but he is the face of the program and he needs to help define himself and his team now to generate positive talk and interest in this team that leads to increase ticket sales.
Jason it is was it is, his status quo, he doesn’t have to work any harder than he has been since everything is in place for him. His feeling of content is the same as coach Nash and Jackson Wheeler, they were contented in the players they recruited, recruited from the same schools and the same kind of players and the end result, we competed at the same level every year, no major jump to get better.
and thanks again for lunch Jason, your loyalty to coach Nash speaks volumes for you, but expecting him to win 20 games was overly optimistic.

It’s open to interpretation. Just my thoughts earlier. I mean really when you look at it, one could also consider Traci Yoshikawa as another vastly improved infielder during the WAC season.
But the reason I chose Ricketts is because her key to the team is only pitching and in that, she has completely rediscovered herself from earlier in the year.
For Gonzalez, she’s Ms. “Steady” at the plate. Ralph likes to point out that she has the most natural swing and she does. She’s very consistent at the plate, but she’s also needed at 3rd base. She’s cleaned it up a bit as the WAC season went along but not too many grounders have come her way.
For Yoshikawa it’s been harder. She was hitting ok in the beginning of the WAC season and slumped a bit and now at the bottom of the order, BUT her play at 2nd base also has drastically improved. I think she’s had the hardest season of all the players. She’s been pulled from 2nd base numerous times in the pre season schedule as Coolen was really trying to send a message, but she’s got some power, all the ladies in the lineup do and really Pagaduan has had a down season and Tara Anguiano isn’t ready yet.
So really it came down to the most improved and really the most effective in regards to their roles on the team. Again, it’s not a slight against Gonzalez or even Yoshikawa, but Ricketts is our pitcher and she is back in form to where we need her to be.
UH men golf in last place, 21 strokes off the pace, 2 more days to climb the leaderboard, they won’t win but they can have a respectible finish.
