Hawaii ended the season with a rush — lots of them — in a 38-21 defeat of UNLV tonight at Aloha Stadium.
The Warriors ran for 295 non-sack yards — their best ground effort since gaining 323 in the opener — and five rushing TDs.
UH quarterback Chevan Cordeiro was 20 of 33 for 252 yards.
UH ends the abbreviated season at 4-4. UNLV finishes 0-6.

Matt Shipley misses a 34-yard, field-goal attempt in a drive during which quarterback Chevan Cordeiro was mostly absent. A UH official said Cordeiro’s contact lens came out on a hit.

It was a costly UNLV drive for the Warriors. Two plays before Charles Williams scored on a 2-run run to close the Rebels to 28-14, UH safety Kai Kaneshiro was called for targeting. Kaneshiro will have to sit out the first half of UH’s 2021 opener.

UNLV also has a new head coach, Marcus Arroyo, who previously was Oregon’s offensive coordinator.
The Rebels have had difficulties adjusting to Arroyo’s spread offense because of injuries, newcomers’ inexperience, and coronavirus-related circumstances. Two of their games have been cancelled. The Rebels are 0-5.

Interesting to see who returns next year being that this year will not count towards their eligibility. How great would it be if Turner returns next year? Cheven just continues to impress. His quickness/speed is deceiving also has the ability to make people miss. Sad that they were not able the have a Senior Night because most Seniors won’t return next season. I think that the way UH celebrates Senior Night is unique.

Even in non-pandemic seasons, a 50% win record would make a team eligible for a bowl game. Hawaii played 8 games and If the Hawaii Bowl was not canceled this year, Hawaii would be going by MWC rule if eligible.

Biggest memory of the brawl between the 2 UHs in the 2004 Hawaii Bowl was seeing Bowl Director Jim Donovan pushing players apart and yelling at them to break it up. Donovan is a former UH O-lineman.
OSD, the three you mentioned that have entered the transfer portal are in addition to the previous three that entered the portal mid-season. They were Bubba Wa’a, Zach Bowers, and Akil Francisco.

Again, the idea of initially putting up bleachers at Ching Field on both sidelines (20,000), followed by an end zone making it into a horseshoe (30,000 – 35,000) the next year many not be such a crazy idea. Modern pressbox can follow.
I like the idea of playing next season at the Ching Field. Scrub the plans to build the Aloha Stadium Entertainment District where the state will invest $395 million. Build it on campus.

No to on campus stadium. That’s crazy. Just play the 4 conference games on Maui. Fix up Maui’s infrastructure so they can be a “second city” as Reno is to Las Vegas. Just need to adjust the 2022 to 2024 schedules to some “body bag games” in exchange of the non conference home games if can. Also see if the Oct 23 home game vs New Mexico St. can be flipped into some form of “Week Zero” body bag game. Maybe off Continent like Australia if it’s Covid safe by then.
Allow them (Maui) to develop ways to broaden their capacity for large events. Plan it so there can eventually (sometime in the semi-near future) be some form of a similar “entertainment facility district” that they are planning for Honolulu. Set up your “plan B” (firstly by “dolling-up” the War Memorial) then go full steam on the Honolulu project so you don’t have to rush.
If you can see a “big picture” having to close down the “money pit” that is Aloha Stadium could be a really good thing. Maui is as much “Hawaii” as Honolulu is. Home will always be home.

Regarding the stadium situation, am I wrong to think that the politicians knew of the impending problem but just “kicked the can down the road” so here we are. Although War Memorial Stadium would be great, (for me at least) I could actually attend games instead of PPV. Hopefully it won’t affect recruiting especially with the recruits coming in next season. I am not familiar with the parking situation a Manoa. Only been there a few times for basketball and baseball. Either way I hope everything works out.
Can’t wait for the bowl game. Did the Warriors leave yet? Will fans be allowed? I am sure Hawaii will be well represented.

I have always envied the U. of Washington (UDUB) stadium on campus as a true “home field” advantage. The players practice on it and play real games on it. They know the field and know how the wind and temperature affects the thrown ball and kicks. They know where the turf monsters hide. They are literally defending their hale.
Now…would playing in the NFL Lumen Field stadium in Seattle or in another part of Washington state have significant advantage for the team? They travel to the stadium just like the visiting team but with slightly less logistics and cost. I think any stadium not on your campus is a “neutral field”.
So UH playing at Aloha Stadium is like a road game except they do not have to fly for hours. Similar logistics. To me, flying to Maui to play a game is just like flying elsewhere in the world, albeit a shorter flight, but the equipment and logistics is the same and they are playing on a neutral field that just happens to be in the Hawaii state.
My 2 cents: If UH cannot play at Aloha stadium, they are going to take a big hit in ticket revenue and AKA/Na Koa parking and premium seating charges. So if you are going to lose money anyway, then do it at Ching Field and enjoy a true home field advantage. Maybe put up more bleachers. Parking money will go to UH along with a cut from the game day food/apparel vendors.
in this offense the intermediate passing game needs bigger targets. The TE Graham recently picked up might not be real accomplished or even the right guy (converted DE walk on at Georgia) but he is definitely a large target. Similar to Armstrong-Brown in size. Need to occupy the safeties attention to get more isolation on the outside.
The way San Jose uses their TE does exactly that. Makes it so much easier to get into a rhythm by being more efficient in the intermediate. Isolates the flat, the outside, the drag route, the shallow crosses and will also augment play action. Even when lined up as flexed out slot or H. Watch San Jose’s offensive videos. Hawaii can be real similar with a good TE.
SJSU dominated Boise and they could have easily scored another touchdown or a field goal. We played actually better.

UH Football may be on its last legs, so gotta enjoy Thursday’s game. I don’t see the MWC allowing games to be played at high school or county stadiums. Hope I’m wrong, but UH Football will likely become a memory in some showcase in the SSC. I’m sure there are certain factions at UH and in the State who are happy to see UH football go away after years of not upgrading facilities, lack of resources, and going on the cheap there. They got their wish, but the problem is how they’ll pay for all of the non revenue sports now? Lolos!!

OSD, I agree with you. Hawaii football cannot survive three years without a legitimate home stadium. So there is no need for the governor to continue pursuing the construction of the Aloha Stadium Entertainment District.
Maui’s War Memorial Stadium holds more than enough. The minimum is 15000 capacity for Division 1. Just got to make a few adjustments. Install a few more seats, fix the media infrastructure and do some property embellishments to accommodate volume. The drawback is that UH would need to fly there. Some may argue logistics with equipment but High School Football doesn’t seem to have a problem with pre-season inter-island travel. This venue can be “just right”, especially if a vacation package can be created specifically for Game Day for Oahu fans (considering if 3 or 4 Maui games = 7 Aloha Stadium games cost wise)
The bigger point is to create a “Second City” capable to accommodate 12 to 15000 visitors (20 to 23000 Stadium fans) like Honolulu can. Create a “plan B” venue while you have the chance. Make it attractive for the Maui people to build a commercial economy around. Increase the “Tax base” via visitors for them then later the increase the population (via work force). Holding multiple seasons of Football would be the perfect opportunity. Then you can prepare a proper time frame for the new Stadium to be built. No need to rush. Make sure you have the necessary funding to “follow through”. Maui can make this work.
In the end, you will have two volume capable cities (Three after the rail connects the Aulani to the new Stadium, then to Waikiki). The new Stadium and its surrounding entertainment venues will be multi use facilities for all kinds of events. And Maui can host events of their own with their extended infrastructure. “The Big Picture” starts with fixing up Maui firstly. The other Islands can be less commercialized (Kauai is marketed different tourism wise) and may be adapted to broaden the State’s economical framework, helping to lessen the dependence Hawaii has on tourism (Agriculture, Aquaculture, Geothermal energy, Military, etc). Got to figure that part out soon (before the next pandemic)

The “Big Picture” is getting/watching UH Football in it’s new Stadium. Imagine the hype. How “majestic” things would be watching Hawaii Football in the new Stadium. Then go back later in May to watch Bruno Mars, Beyonce in June, and then some K-Pop “Summer Spectacular” in July. And then hold the MayJah RayJah on Maui Labor Day weekend.
Here are some other ideas to diversify the economy here. Hard but not impossible. One more government contract (like an Area 51 type isolated R&D base??) And lots of specialty crop farming.

43. Several schools, such as in the Big West ( UC Irvine,UCSB, LBSU, etc.) , do not have football but do have other men’s and women’s sports. Their university and state ( taxpayer ) support is actually lower in dollar amount than what UH requires because their athletic budgets are much smaller.
-UH would be ahead of some of the other non-football schools because our Wvb, Mvb, Mbb and baseball pay for themselves or come close to it.

The NFL let the chargers play at Home Depot and rams at a college stadium. If they could that I’m sure Hawaii can play somewhere.
It’s not a question of being pessimistic or optimistic. The reality is the program cannot sustain itself without gate receipts for three years. I would venture to guess the program will need a minimum of 8,000 paying fans to stay afloat. So without a sufficiently large enough stadium to play in, the program will die from financial starvation, just as a person dies from blood loss. And you think governor Ige will throw out a lifeline? I don’t see that happening.

54 and 58… Looks like Matlin is leaning towards using Ching Field saying he thinks they can fit 10,000 plus there. But they are studying the situation.
Besides the Houston players lost due to academics, the last i read was that three key players were opting out for the Senior Bowl.
The AAC should look to attract Army now that they seem to have their program together. More geographically sensible and a lot more (if you count overseas viewership via military) attractive TV market wise. I think Army may be comfortable in their “lane” as it stands though.
Boise is an established program and would put the AAC over the top as a “powerful” conference so you can see the benefit for both. Slowly the “field” in the MWC (even UH 40-32) was closing the gap on Boise. You could see it narrowing every year. So maybe they this decision might backfire if they end up as a “not as dominant second tier” in this conference. They would have a better chance in the PAC 12 “dominance” wise.

Flying to Maui costs money, both for UH and additional costs paying for MWC teams flying in. Not as attractive or glamorous as Maui, but Ching Field makes sense. Don’t understand why local media does not investigate and asked hard questions to the Stadium Authority and State Legislators. Instead, stories about Mariota vs Tua matchup.
In 2019 Kent State led all Group of Five schools in revenue with $4.5 million despite averaging only 12,000 fans per game in 5 home games. They played Arizona St 30-7, Wisconsin 48-0, and Auburn 55-16 all losses. They did end up beating Utah St in the Frisco Bowl ($650,000 payout).
If Graham can tell a recruit that he could compete against some of the top programs (in the duration of the Stadium being completed via “body bag games”) and have the opportunity to display talent/abilities vs top level individuals why wouldn’t that recruit consider Hawaii. It would be much better than playing for a power 5 and possibly sit and have to portal later. And better than going to a competitor school (ex. SDSU,UNLV) who might not be in as “visible” games as Hawaii would. Just need to keep the games competitive.
As they get used to the routine (8 road games a year) they could figure it out. Then in the end they can “prosper” in their new home Stadium in front of a “New Generation” (the old generation seem to be real downers) of fans. “The Big Picture”. Take the opportunity to develop Maui. Can still make money……. Think. Really Think… Everything is possible if you really think.

The more important point of using War Memorial would be to market and develop Maui. Of course it would be more economical (easier?) to use Ching Field but the “opportunity” more than outweighs the 10000 or less (and the traffic mess) on the one lane parking complex. An opportunity like this to “City/State plan” does not happen often. It would be a mistake to miss out on it.

AKA/Na Koa and UH will lose those ticket sales and surcharges, but the reserved parking fee money will be intact. But I dunno so could be wrong.
A few body bag games only for big bucks is not out of the question and can be expected in any given year, but for those games I would like to see the team get a chartered flight home after the game.
Hopefully, UH can line up OOC games with the likes of Oregon, UW, ASU, Texas (Hawaiian Air will have direct flights) in order to earn a nice payday.

I thought the upper levels were closed last season in order to reduce the janitorial and security costs. No matter, time to move on. I believe that the potential contractors for the new Stadium and Entertainment District have advised the administration, that in order to meet the completion deadline of 2023, they would have to commence demolition of Aloha Stadium immediately. So just declare the old, rusting bucket unfit.
There must be hundreds of thousands of dollars in salvageable equipment in that stadium. Seats, turf, that score board, ovens, refrigerators, fountains, tons of scrap metal and several 50 year old urinals.

I don’t get the long passes, seems like none connect. Midrange passes are much more efficient. Also, do we really have a tight end?
Watching Hunter run, I believe he will be a good one. Doesn’t dance into the line and seems to be a tough runner. Looked like the offense tried to do some things with a tight end. If that can be developed further, it could be a nice wrinkle to the offense. Chevan is a good QB and should continue to improve. He needs more time with the receivers on the deep throw. There was a connection with JoJo Ward but that chemistry did not seem to evolve with his new deep threats. Should be fun next season.
I hope Graham can pick up a true 0 technique 315 to 330 pound NG so Taala can rotate and isolate between the B gaps. He just takes on so many double (and triple teams occasionally) consistently but when he is isolated one on one he often dominates. Similar to Kennedy but without the “anger” (Taala is so laid back and nice) so little less explosive.
He is a playmaker more than a space eater so Graham needs to find that space eating guy and allow Blessman to roam. And one 6’3″ to 6’6″ speed rushing disruption specialist to rotate in on passing downs if can. Christmas wish.

I think because there wasn’t an opportunity for Cheven and the receivers to work on timing etc. caused incompletions especially on the deep ball. Should be much improved next season. I fekt that the defense played its most complete game. Turner’s performance just made us all want him to come back next year even more. Can you imagine a backfield with, Turner, Dae Dae, and the incoming freshman Johnson? Scary good.
OneSr, I agree with your view, except Chevan’s passing woes. I think Chevan has lost confidence in his passing skills. He appears to be afraid of throwing an INT so he tends to overthrow. Ikaika Woolsey had the same problem. All the physical skills, but not the confidence. To exacerbate his passing dilemma, Chevan turns to his running skills as a bailout. JMO
Question: I understand that covid has changed life mightily. So, does this mean that news of UH football to this blog will be fed by blog contributors and not from ST in the future? Seems that life on the blog has gone from quiet to silent and I am sure that there’s probably a reason for this.

In Facebook ST mentioned that he and Ferd are on furlough for X weeks until end of February–not all and they can pick and choose. They apparently chose to be off the weeks before the New Mexico Bowl was announced. Looks like they stayed on furlough since they did not report on the game and related stories.
COVID-19 restrictions in the quarry, physical separation, team wanting to stay safe and a new coaching staff all contribute to lack of stories. ST and Ferd might have to prove their discretion yet, but at least Coach Graham call ST by name in press conferences. Also, I suspect the Star-Advertiser is reducing support for blogs technically and financially.
I’m satisfied if ST makes and leaves a blog entry open once in a while so we can comment. The Tsai-Kos are a different experience UH football fan (mostly) from the Facebook “Hawaii Football–Warrior-Nation” group where he sometimes posts.

I was basing the demand off the one time they played there in 2001. The attendance was 12863 when the capacity was at 18000. I was also basing it on having only four home games in 2021, the conference games. “Feel out” how marketing can encourage Oahu fans to make it to multiple games instead of just being a one “novelty” outing, especially for season ticket holders.

I’ve been going to UH games as a season ticket holder since about 2012. Prior to that I would go whenever I could get someone to work for me since about 2002 (maybe two games a year). Attended lots of games as a KCC student. Last couple years even with Rolovich having “turn around” years the Stadium rarely looked 15000-20000 full (thank you to Mariota). I never did expect more than 15000 per game there on Maui. Maybe with the right marketing for Oahu fans and the families and friends of the visiting teams (as vacation package?) the 12865 sounds just about right. Besides no other venue holds more right now (after the demolition). Don’t need to be a “Mecca”. (C’mon bro)
As for the Maui as a “Metropolis” it is (in my opinion) a candidate ready to be developed. Lots of opportunities for growth and development. Like Oahu after the pineapple and sugar cane left. “Growth-ability”. Just the opposition by Local population to really develop (It’s a natural response to change everywhere here in Hawaii by locals) may hold things back some. It’s possible. Really think and look at what’s possible. Or stay in your box and troll…..Up to you.

I’m also an advocate of War Memorial Stadium as the last option. It’s better than playing all of your games on the road like a pre-conference SWAC basketball team. Since Hawaii last played on Maui, War Memorial expanded to 23,000 seats, which is more than enough to meet the demand for college football in the islands, unfortunately.
The fan base is on Oahu.
While I can only guess at the $$$ numbers based on my previous Aloha stadium season tickets and parking, I can venture the following:
1) The total football revenue at Aloha stadium contains PSC (Premium Seating Surcharge) for season ticket holders above the ticket price. For example, my season ticket was $480 in 2018 for 5-6 games (I forget). There are around 5-9,000 others like me who pay the PSC of some amount. The others have no PSC tacked on their tickets. Any ticket sales revenue at another venue would probably be less. BOTTOM LINE: total revenue to the UH and AKA/Na Koa is not proportional based on number of seats in the stadium. UH can definitely control Ching Field and might be able to offer seating to the “high roller” regulars and get a surcharge.
2) The higher level Na Koa donors can bid/buy parking at Aloha stadium or Aiea Elementary. I would buy the bus lot at $300+ and the inner circle was double with most reserved for really high donors. Lotsa bucks in parking/tailgate space. I suppose UH could arrange parking passes for them in the parking structure.
I maintain that while Ching Field may not have many seats as other venues, the 10,000+ season ticket fan revenue opportunities partially offset volume capacity and is well within UH control. Plus the real, really real home field advantage.
So easy to install bleachers at Ching Field.
Steve M, you bring up the main point of why I am against building the new stadium at Halawa. UH Athletics pays rent for each game, somewhere just under $100K. The Stadium Authority keeps almost all the revenue generated from parking fees, advertising and concession sales. UH Athletics makes their revenue from ticket sales.
An on-campus stadium will allow UH to keep all of the revenue. Financially, it’s a better model for UH Athletics.

I agree with H-Man, an on campus stadium would be ideal. To me the Stadium Authority has been somewhat dysfunctional at times, (Hula Bowl, Pro Bowl) especially when it involves UH Athletics. As an example a friend of mine, granted attended UH back in the 80’s said that in order for students to gain free admission to the game had to be there by 1:30p for a game that starts at 6p. If that is still the case no wonder not very many students attend. If I am not mistaken last seasons high school championship game drew more fans than UH games. To me the maybe the Stadium Authority does not make attending games as enjoyable or easy as it can be. Although I am only speaking to what I have read about or heard of in the past. An on campus venue would then enable the university to keep most of the revenue and hopefully encourage more student participation and then maybe create a more college type of atmosphere that has been said to be lacking.

111. The last i heard was that UH does not pay rent to Aloha Stadium. It does pay for operating costs for each game. In 2014, that was about $85,000 to $100,000 per game. UH also buys some parking stalls ( 3095 in 2014 ) from the stadium but resells those for a profit. In ,2014, they made around $250,000 profit on those. UH also shares in field naming rights, i think, with the stadium.
-If UH runs a stadium, they will have to pay for all costs of running that stadium, fixed and variable, which they do not pay currently, although many stadium workers are part-time intermittent employees.
Aloha Stadium had losses ( before capital contributions from the state ) of $ 2.39 million and $4.3 million in FY 2019 and FY 2018, with whatever revenue it was entitled to. …So some of you are assuming that UH can run a stadium better than the stadium authority without any losses.
UH Athletics operates and maintains the Stan Sheriff Center, Les Murakami Stadium, Duke Kahanomoku Aquatic Complex, Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, T C Ching Athletics Complex and tennis courts, all with revenue generated by the athletic programs. They do a very good job doing so.

I have seen SSC Mgr Rich Sheriff outside pulling weeds with staff around the facility (doing the job of the regular maintenance). The guy does care.
UH graduations can be held in an on-campus stadium (SSC is too small). Concerts (someday – got over the “Wonder Blunder?”) can be held. Eventually, build a modern press box with a banquet facility for special events and rentals with culinary students from the CCs (http://stadium.utah.edu/the-tower/). Doesn’t just have to be UH football games. Ahhh……. to much work for State Officials.

During this Covid shutdown I was laid off for eight months. Recently went back to work. During the time off I spent a lot of time at home with my mom. We ended up arguing about everything (I think that happened to most extended families). Freezer space, “junk” management, taking out the trash bins (she remind me from 4 days prior, everyday), toilet paper (we still get from April), hand wipes, politics, water usage, even home repair (I’m not an expert so I gotta use you tube).
I know our differences in mindset is because of age. Nothing more than that. Very set and dismissive. Really unwavering. But I can’t say she’s wrong. Who wouldn’t appreciate a constant supply of toilet paper (OK maybe the person that went to the empty aisle) and even with the water usage (“Ahhh, the water shed going re-fill in the winter”). In the end, her viewpoint is the same as mine but in a more protective/precautionary (less pragmatic?) way. It’s the same here on this blog. Lots of arguing and difference of opinion but in the end it’s hard to tell if anybody is wrong.
Going to be an interesting decision as to where UH will play its home games next season and then beyond until the Stadium is either fixed or replaced with the new stadium. Lots of different viewpoints and opinions. All healthy though. Of the young, the middle aged, and the older. All Here. All Good….. Can do.

Todays article by Ferd Lewis quotes that UH football is 4th priority in the new stadium. UH doesn’t suck hind teat–but the 4th. Actually understandable since UH uses the facility 7-8 times per year, which is not much in the 365 day Aloha Stadium pie.
Using Ching Field for the next 3 years might be the best short term solution for UH and they can have all the requested perks…which they wouldn’t get for 3 years anyway, if at all.
Just have the State help UH Athletics with paying for the use of the stadium for the 6-7 games a year until the new stadium is built. Of course if they do something stupid like tear down the stadium before the new one is built then the public has to make their voices heard. Why has no one in the media questioned Ige on this fiasco?
Two things come to mind. First, how is it the Hula Bowl will be held on Jan 31 at Aloha Stadium? I thought it was announced the stadium was closed. Secondly, the state is using the stadium re-build to direct $395 million tax money to the development of the Entertainment District. Since when the state is allowed to allocate tax money for commercial development, other than infrastructure support?

After reading the article the requests sound reasonable, even the “paramount scheduling consideration” request. The only thing I think the University should pay is the “rental and facilities cost” charge, possibly at a reduced rate. Would make the program more accountable for profit and loss via attendance (not depend on all that other “nickel and dime” revenue crap). Put out a good product like Bruno Mars does so you make money the proper way. I don’t see anything outrageous in those requests really. So early in the process may as well put everything “on the table” as a starting point toward negotiations. Good .

Gotta admit that that aerial view photo looks pretty good. Nice layout. I always thought that UH Baseball games were a good value over UH Football mainly because of the concession beer and food prices. That’s why the football tailgate was such an important facet of the entire “experience” of going to the UH Football game. The tailgate made UH Football “addicting” for our crew. I can’t imagine a tailgate area there. Maybe they have something planned for that. IDK. Going to be interesting to see how things develop. Different. At least crowded. Loud too. Maybe exclusive? We’ll see.
with covid, who knows…but how about opening up the arena for concessions and viewing the game on the big screens. more seats could mean more money for UH.
unless they do plan on constructing more seats to hold more fans…who knows, the arena is a family-friendly place that’s air conditioned…
