Live football blog: Hawaii vs. Boise State
Hawaii’s frenetic falls short as Boise State, after 4 minutes of review, is awarded a drama-ending first down, clinching 40-32 victory at Aloha Stadium.
The Warriors scored 15 unanswered points to close to 40-32 with 4:52 to play.
The Broncos advanced to the UH 33, where they faced a fourth-and-3. Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier was flushed from pocket and sprinted toward the first-down marker on the right sideline Bachmeier was initially ruled to have been knocked out at the 29, a yard short of the first down, with 1:53 to play. But after a review, it was ruled Bachmeier exited at the 28. A measurement showed Bachmeier had made the first down. The Broncos then went into the victory formation to run out the clock on their ninth consecutive victory over the Warriors.

The Warriors have scored 15 unanswered points to make this a one-possession deficit.
Jared Smart hauled in a 4-yard fade from Chevan Cordeiro to close the Warriors to 40-30 with 4:52 to play. Then Calvin Turner sprinted around right end — untouched — on the 2-point coversion. Turner has accounted for 22 of the Warriors’ points — three TDs and two conversion runs.
* * * * *
Calvin Turner’s third touchdown of the second half — a 15-yarder from Chevan Cordeiro — cuts the UH deficit to 40-24 with 9:56 to play.
* * * * *
Fun fact: On average, a UH game takes 8 minutes longer at Aloha Stadium than on the road.
* * * * *
Boise State takes a 40-17 lead into the final quarter.
The Broncos have out-gained the Warriors, 354 yards to 277, with a 249-149 advantage in passing.
* * * * *
The Broncos’ third touchdown in 7 minutes, 16 seconds, boosts their lead to 40-17 with 3:38 left in the third quarter.
This time, Andrew Van Buren went 11 yards for the TD. It came a play when an apparent lost fumble by Van Buren was not called.
* * * * *
The Warriors strike back, relying on one of their best playmakers.
Calvin Turner catches a swing pass from Chevan Cordeiro, who was clobbered after making the throw, and sprints 36 yards along the left sideline for a touchdown. Turner, as the wildcat quarterback, then scores on the 2-point run to close UH to 33-17 with 5:35 left in the third quarter.
* * * * *
It’s Avery Williams who is central to another Boise State touchdown.
After going 99 yards for a TD on a kickoff return, soon after Williams returns a punt 36 yards to the UH 26. Three plays later, Andrew Van Buren sprints 11 yards around left end to increase BSU’s lead to 33-9 with 8:18 left in the third quarter.
* * * * *
Avery Williams takes the kickoff, fakes a throwback and then fast-forwards 99 yards for a touchdown to extend the Broncos’ lead to 26-9 with 10:54 left in the third quarter.
It was the first kickoff for a TD UH has allowed in three years.
* * * * *
Calvin Turner, aligning as the wildcat quarterback, goes 1 yard for a touchdown to close UH to 19-9 with 11:09 left in the third quarter. Quarterback Chevan Cordeiro was a yard short on the two-point attempt.
* * * * *
Boise State leads, 19-3, at the intermission.
Despite scrappy play by UH’s defense — a red-zone stand and an interception — the Broncos have controlled the stat book.
The Broncos have an advantage in yards (239 to 119), and creativity. The Broncos’ second TD came on wideout CT Thomas’ 3-yard option toss to Khalil Shakir.
UH’s Chevan Cordeiro is 10 of 21 for 50 yards. UH receivers dropped four passes.
* * * * * *
It would not be a Boise State offense if not for a trick play. CT Thomas sprints left on the jet sweep, then lofts a left-handed toss to Khalil Shakir in the end zone for the 3-yard TD.
BSU leads, 19-3, with 54 seconds left in the first half.
* * * * *
The Broncos take a 12-3 lead on 38-yard scoring pass from Hank Bachmeier to Khalil Shakir. Shakir to make the leaping grab at the 12, eluded cornerback Cortez Davis on the landing, and ran into the end zone with 5:11 left in the half.
UH’s Jonah Laulu blocked the extra-point kick.
* * * * * *
The Broncos go ahead, 6-3, on Jonah Dalmas’ second field goal, this time from 42 yards, with 10:09 left in the half.
The Broncos let slip another bigger play when CT Thomas droppped a sure touchdown pass at the threshold of the end zone earlier in the drive.
* * * * *
It’s all tied at 3 after one quarter.
The Broncos actually had a chance to take a 7-3 lead, but Andrew Van Buren’s TD run was nullified because of a chop block. The Broncos ended up settling for a field goal. It was the first time this season the Broncos did not score a TD on a red-zone drive. They were 12-for-12 previously.
* * * * *
The Broncos tie it at 3 on freshman Jonah Dalmas’ field goal from 32 yards with 1:13 to play in the first quarter.
The drive was fueled a 55-yard, catch-and-sprint play from Hank Bachmeier to CT Thomas. Thomas eluded two would-be tackles on the post route.
* * * * * *
For the first time this season, the Warriors are the first team to score.
Matthew Shipley’s 27-yard field goal puts UH ahead, 3-0, with 4:36 to play.

A (one-sided) rivalry continues today when Boise State and Hawaii meet at Aloha Stadium.
The Broncos have won the past eight in this series.
Last week, 14 Broncos were held out — nine for testing positive for COVID-19, five for contact tracing. BSU officials indicated many will return for tonight’s game. Injured running back George Holani, quarterback Jack Sears and offensive lineman Nick Crabtree did not travel to Hawaii.
But Hank Bachmeier, who returned last week after being released from isolation, is expected to take snaps in the Broncos’ multiple-motion, eclectic offense. Despite using four quarterbacks this season and being without star running back George Holani the past 11 quarters, the Broncos are averaging 40 points per game. Their quarterbacks have combined for 65% accuracy.
Three of the Warriors’ first four games were on the road. Three of their final four will be at Aloha Stadium. The Warriors’ next three opponents are a combined 12-0 in league play.
Kinpira!
GO BOWS!!!
He gotta escape the pocket and extend the play on that one. Perfect set up. Too bad. S***
I really wish they could pump in sound like the other sports
SOMEBODY SAW NORM CHOW ON THE SIDELINE? OOOH NOOO! WHAT HAPPENED TO RUN N SHOOT AND AIR RAID? WHATS UP!!
Pavihi has to twist from outside. He needs a straighter angle.
Wrapping up and tackling remains a problem. It was a problem in the past and just seems to persist.
Boise’s QB is accurate.
Defense playing well.
Should play action opposite the shallow cross and drag with Chevan’s legs.
Is the new offense that different from the run and shoot? Seems like our receivers just aren’t as able to get open as they were able to do last year. Our tackling must’ve pretty bad as the announcer keeps bringing up our missed tackles.
Need bigger slots. All TE routes targeted tonight but with Stovall, Reed, Bussey, one to Turner and one to Panoke who got cracked.
Used Wilson. Desperate for some size?
Where’s Hawaii’s offense. What a letdown from the excitement Rolo brought with the R m S. This is shades of Norm Chow.
Max protect and go deep with Bowens and Mardner.
Did we abandon the Run….
Watch to see Boise pound it now..
Ohhhh Bobby Curran is tuff to listen to
He gotta practice and get better.
Hawaii playing scared on offense.. Hope things change in the 2nd half
Cannot help but to compare Graham to Chow. No regard to what might work and adjust to try to win games.” Just run OUR stuff “. “I don’t give a **** about what you good at”. “Your problem, deal (fail) with it”. Too bad…. Fixable??
One word….HAH!….out of here…..
@16 – We have the worst play callers in the history of all sports with Curran and Kekaula. Both need to retire. Although I know I can’t do any better myself. 😁
Rodney…BS been doing this for how many years?…..and just getting worse every year.
BC…
I think that it would be difficult for Graham to change out his offense. His son is on staff and he is close to the OC. Too much attachment. Defense, in spite of tackling woes is better than its been in the past and hopefully improvements can happen. Offense is simply woeful.
No turnover strategy for the offense means we don’t lose by 30+ but gives us zero percent chance to win
Any 13 year old who plays enough Madden can create a game plan and utilize the individual strengths of the offensive roster better than this. I’m serious. A 13 year old would adjust and try to win…..Or at least press reset. *%^$#%@!!!
Needed a bigger slot than Reed there. F**** Lucky
Qb sneak….easy td!!! Let’s go OC
Follow #76
@23,
He has to adjust to the talent we have.
Let’s go bows
I hope to see more power Wildcat. Useful if you want to win.
Wow …lack of talent exposed on KO td
So outcoached. Amateur today. And I’m the apologist here usually.
This game is hard to watch…….again.
Outcoached too ….we exposed…..watching players body language now.. let’s go bows
Even the cutouts want to leave and hit the parking lot right now………Matlin????
Yeah that’s how fast UH is going down. The broadcast can’t even keep up with BSU scoring during commercials. What a joke!!!’
QB controversy ?
Nice effort. Even the long pass by Chevan even the protection on this drive, No give up boys.
Thats why we need more power Wildcat.
And that too
And that too …and kick it away from a run back
Go bows!!
Defenses turn to not give up. Play for each other. F*** the coaches. Each other and us the fans. Ohana style.
If Cordero can get protection our OC should call some double move pass routes….
Little more effort is all. It’s right there. make a play defense. Play for each other.
Seems like not everybody on the field want to play. Where are the receivers that they signed this year? Need to recruit guys that can catch the ball. Noticed Mardner not playing or didn’t see him. Too many dropped balls? Need to play “off the ball”. If your number isn’t called, don’t just stand around. You might be setting up the next play or plays down the line.
Let’s go Defense
Great effort D
Good. Total effort from quarter switch. Just play hard. For each other.
Bad call. Good block
Trust each other. O-Line to Chevan . Trust. That’s the key. Trust………Matlin.
Trust the referees too.***** the coaches
Great way to not give up.
Oh boy!!! Trust and Believe
If Turner stays next year got so much potential. Unless the coaches rather constantly run jet sweeps 2nd and long.
Turner is a senior.
Too bad the offense woke up late. Most on the mainland already went to bed, but it kept us entertained in Hawaii. Well, those that bothered to watch till the end.
I think they might have turned the corner and figured this out. Trust. Trust each other. Play hard. Succeed despite the inability of your coaches. Play hard. Just like last year. You guys were good last year with same guys. You will always have that inside you. let it show in your play. **** the coaches, just follow the game plan (no matter how flawed). “TRUST”. Ohana style. Believe in your abilities. I do. Fixable. You fix it, not the coaches fix it.
I may be wrong but, due to COVID, this year doesn’t count towards your eligibility. So everyone can come back… if they choose to. Would be great if Turner does come back next year. I think that the future is bright for the team, just the fact of new staff, schemes and the lack of spring ball etc are the major causes to the way they are playing. Oline looked better tonight. The running game needs to get going again. Way to keep fighting and not giving up.
On to the next game.
Go Bows.
Too bad we lost… BUT, in past meetings we’ve lost a whole lot worse to Boise. We are closing the gap.
As for Curran … maybe he forgets he is radio play-by-play and not a TV color commentator.
Offense had a nice flow with Keliiliki in the game (4th quarter). Pass and run. Chevan, O-Line and receivers got into a rhythm. I don’t think it’s a coincidence If they’re going to run “slot” (jet) sweep as a “non-gimmick” part of your offensive base package of plays then they should use Keliiliki as H more. Play works better because of his blocking past two games. You can see it.
“The NCAA’s Division I Council officially recommended that the Division I Board of Governors implement a rule that would allow players to keep their full remaining eligibility if they decide not to play because of coronavirus concerns..” The council’s recommendation further allows players to opt-out if they play no more than half the season. There has been no decision yet, but in Turner’s case, he has passed the point-of-no-return.
Hawaii made it a game in the fourth. Seems to be a trend this season. I feel there’s hope for the remaining games. Warriors can win out if they play for a full game like they did in the fourth.
As for Avery Williams. his antics should have been flagged as unsportsmanlike. I do not wish him well.
The Hawaii offense overcame the lack of a inside run game with a great adjustment of Chevan taking the check down pass to RB Reed and taking the short slants/crossing routes. Great adjustment. But keep in mind the refs kept some Hawaii drives alive with homefield penalties that is part of the game. Every homefield team gets home field calls from the refs and doesn’t get those same refs calls on the road.
The special teams gave up 14 points and that was the factor that lost this game. The defense is getting better and better every game. The lack of a inside running game still needs to be fixed and the lack of a vertical game is very surprising considering the RnS WR corps on the roster. I liked what I saw last night, these Warriors don’t quit and Chevan is a play maker at Aloha Stadium. It’s terrific the Warriors defend the Home Turf with such intensity but they got to get back to the Road Warriors intensity just like last season.
Bobby Curran needs to practice getting better
Give us the Words-eye-view,use adjectives,vary the wording so not to describe every play the same and our color guy could give us more of the “why things are happening rather then what’s happening.
Any comments on sig Zane collaboration with Nike and Oregon’s football uniforms…
On the TD kickoff return Paul Scott clearly was pushed in the back as Williams approached the coverage wedge then got actually blocked in the back (by #48) an he squared up to make contact. I think he either would have made that tackle or at least slow his momentum enough to gang tackle and stop Williams somewhere near there. Too bad ref’s missed it. Not Scott’s fault

islandman5 posted this condensed game on the WSN board. I don’t know if he has access to condensed games (via subscription?) but I sure miss watching game film on opponents and using it to figure out WTF moments with our own execution. They don’t post 2020 MWC condensed games this year. I hope it’s not because of Spectrum protocol, they already losing credibility by the minute with UH fans. I know Maddog50 likes to review video as well here as we all should when we have the chance. You will see things you didn’t notice in real time…… Better than watching video in my mom’s room hearing her complain about how much Korean drama she had to erase to record UH game.
BTW my Mom lives with us. I don’t live in her basement. In case you were wondering.
Great to see Jared Smart’s TD grab against the Kahuku DB. Wish local boys the best, except when it’s against UH. Left tackle Micah Vanterpool (#71) did a good job at left tackle. DId Ilm Manning get injured?
Manning was in on the missed two point conversion where Vanterpool lined up as offset Y.
SteveM,
Not only was this the closest we played Boise since 2007, if not for some mental errors on special teams, we would’ve won the game.
Go ‘Bows!
Looked like Boise was in loose zone 4th quarter so a lot of short, underneath stuff was available. Reed did make a nice catch/play early 4th that was well defended. I think the coaches play calling (with Chevan able to check out) has to be able to decipher man or zone, blitz or bluff quicker, just like a 13 year old would do playing Madden. Then have the center figure/call the protection package to sync up with intended target. Looks like that might be the passing problem more than arm strength or pass blocking or even the play calling. Adjustments Fixable.
After a very good season, a trip to the Mountain West title game and a Hawaii Bowl victory, there was plenty of excitement and optimism around this program. Through five games this team has been major disappointment. Nothing about the offense has improved from this last year, and the offensive line, which was experienced and a strength entering the season, has seemingly regressed. This coaching staff is NOT putting their players in positions to be successful. Jared Smart is a perfect example. Last year he had over 1,100 yards receiving, 5 touchdown catches and averaged 13 yards per reception. Through games this year he has 201 yards receiving, 1 touchdown catch, and is averaging 8.8 yards per reception. Did Nick Mardner and Lincoln Victor even see the field last night? I am incredibly frustrated and disappointed with what this coaching staff has done so far.
When I watched the game in real time it never looked like Hawaii was trying to comeback in this game. There wasn’t a “hurry up” urgency that was noticeably different from the rest of the game. Offense and Defense. But what you did see in the in the 4th quarter was a greater “trust” in each other which aided in the entire execution of not only the offense but the entire “mechanism” of how a “team” should function. Whole TEAM. Together. I don’t know if the coaching had anything to do with it (there was no reason to feel that it did judging from the previous 3 quarters) but you could see the “Boys” put greater effort to extend the “TRUST”. You could really see it happening. I think they may have “turned a corner” and figured it out going forward.
On the first touchdown Goal line Wildcat package had Turner as QB with Reed as RB, Hunter as weak side TE, Vanterpool as strong side TE and #40 (Sergio Muasau?) as lead FB. Turner followed #40’s lead and dived in. Very good package. (But Hunter? IDK) Anyways very good.
Did Todd graham ever have his mask on?
I don’t think Chevan is the problem for the Offense struggles, this Run-n-Gun offense is built for the run game first. Hawaii has no inside run game, is does have outside jet sweep/bubble screen/wildcat success. The opponent defense don’t have to respect the threat of the running back and can disrupt the vertical pass offense. The vertical passing game and ability to extend plays with his feet are Chevan’s greatest strengths and opponents defenses know this.
That leaves the short check downs and the audible to the hot reads available. Of course, way too many drop passes by the WRs but the adjustments to take what the opponent defense is giving you is a improvement against a high caliber teams like Boise State.
Just watched game for second time. Defense played well except for a few coverage errors. Better not happen with Nevada. Romeo Doubs is the best I’ve seen in quite some time. Offense, dropped balls overthrown balls, breakdown in protection missed blocks in run game. Way to many QB runs called. Gotta be honest there is tons to fix but I think we can fix some. Numerous times we had three receivers all in same area and don’t threaten middle field deep. Next three games will all be tough so we will see/
@Maddog50
I think everyone can agree that Turner needs more touches. Do you think he should get those touches with traditional handoffs, gadget sweeps, flat passes and intermediate routes (he’s not as good at catching in space surprisingly) or do you think he should get his touches in more Wildcat and all it’s varied packages….. I prefer Wildcat RPO with FB (like Ravens) using Reed or Hunter as RB/WB pitchman (like we saw on the second 2pt conversion)? What is your opinion?
@Maddog50
I know you’re a big proponent for Pavihi as MLB (I think most everyone here is, and his mom). Didn’t look comfortable as DE (similar to Padello as OLB) on Saturday. I even saw Boise run straight at him on the second touchdown. Struggled to set the edge. What do you feel Graham should do with him? How about the personnel in general? Lots of confusion and unnecessary risk taking in deep/intermediate middle of the field. Not much consistent pressure without blitzing either. Would like to get your thoughts on our D. Thanks.
If I compare production and playmaking ability between Pavihi at MLB and Pritchard I think Pavihi has more benefit. Maybe Pritchard is more functional and traditional in his application (much better than Pavihi side to side) but if you going to attack downhill with Pritchard why not use Pavihi in those packages? Is it DL depth? Do you need speed or size (or medium w/ motor) at DE? May as well use Thomas (4pt stance) or Scott (2pt stance) if you anticipating more pass than run. I feel bad for Pavihi like I felt bad for Padello last year.
If Sergio Muasau can lose about 30 pounds he can be next Mauia (blocking wise). Perfect height to girth ratio for FB, just needs more speed. Can block 3 techniques and clear gaps to create creases. Easy, but lighter.
Nishigawa was very fast when he motioned right to left in the “speed” version Wildcat on the final 2pt conversion. He was actually the read option guy as Turner faked a handoff to him with Reed as the “pitchman”.
Vanterpool was strong side TE on “goal line” version Wildcat on the first TD when Turner followed Muasau. Vanterpool was offset Y lead receiver in stack formation (with same side flanker) on the following 2pt conversion. If he was TE next to Manning, Corderio would have had a better chance to score. Looked like it might have been a bubble pass for Reed but a Boise DB jumped the route… BTW no way Manning is his listed 280 pound weight.
I think right now a number of combos will work. I think Pavihi can work off the edge but is not comfortable. He is most effective in the middle. Right now number of combos are being tried. The D is a lot more effective than in past except when they spend too much time on the field. As far as Turner he is doing lot of his magic on his own in space. Need to have a lot more overall consistence on O so that designed plays in sequence are successful enough with other personnel then call Turners number. They are gonna key/spy this kid leaving other options to exploit/
Nice. Thanks Maddog
Listen to Coach Graham’s Nevada press conference. Insightful.
Thru the years I have supported the program thru Na Koa and other fund raising efforts. I encourage football alum and fans to do the same.
Both honored and humbled to be featured in the football alum Na Koa FB and UH football sight. I owe a lot to my time at UH and continue to pay back! Beat those Wolves! GoWarriors!!!!!
Granted, UH is not a major conference so coaching wont be up to that higher standard. However, I have seen mid-majors rise up in adjustability. Sadly, Warriors are not on that level yet. TOO SLOW TO ADJUST-LIKE PARTS OF LAST YEAR. GUESS GOT TO GIVE COACHES A PASS FOR THIS YEAR BUT IT IS PAINFUL TO WATCH!! ACTUALLY QUITE PATHETIC. WE’LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS IN THE LAST 3 GAMES.
More money, lots more needed for the program to think about winning championships and competing with P5 schools on a regular basis. Can’t look at the State for infusion, so a very rich benefactor will have to emerge, just as alumnus Jay H. Shidler has for UH’s school of business, for whom it is named – The Shidler School of Business. His endowment is somewhere in the range of $125 million.
I think once Darius Muasau can get real consistent at DE he can become real comparable to Jahlani Tavai. He just needs to be a little more visible and make bigger plays. He is such a “volume” playmaker with a nose for the ball but doesn’t really pop out on video, especially in real time. He had that unreal close out on the Bachmeier chase down saturday. Needs to display that same explosion and speed from edge as DE. Totally do-able. More 4 man pass pressure without blitz for this defense will help the recent “lousy” mid-secondary coverage problems. Especially against this offense.
Happy Turkey Day, All Y’all! (In Honor of All Cowboy Fans)
GO WARRIORS!!!</i

In the Graham news conference of Nov. 24, he said some of the new stuff ( different from last season ) is the offensive line having to use the “vertical set” for pass blocking . He said they are used to the “heavy set “. …OL experts, can you explain what is that ?
This could explain some of the problems in the blocking.
Akamai Okole, Pomai
Chee Hoooooooo….. Confidence……I love it !!!
Happy Thanksgiving Everybody
Nevada’s Timmy Chang is likely in a good position earning $190,000 as Tight Ends coach and 3rd highest paid assistant behind the coordinators. Got a feeling that he’ll follow Jay Norvell wherever he ends up, due to loyalty to him. Chang was coaching D-III before getting hired by Norvell in 2017. Not sure, but UH’s coordinators may earn about the same as Chang. Reno is a lot cheaper place to live, to boot. Interesting to see how coaching careers develop.
Drew Buggs made his debut yesterday with Missouri. His new team defeated Oral Roberts 91-64. Buggs scored no points, but he grabbed a rebound, dished out two assists, and nabbed a steal in 13 minutes. Tomorrow, Dawson Carper makes his debut with Missouri State. The Bears play Evangel, a NAIA school. Lauren Rewers makes her debut with Michigan State tomorrow against St. Francis.
93. Lauren was 1 for 6 for 2 pts, one rebound , one block in 12 minutes
After watching the Coach Graham’s Nevada press conference I will “buy-in” once again into what he’s selling. Graham addressed some issues that were bothering a lot of us fans. Play calling, personnel, adjustments, blocking schemes, and game planning. He summed it up citing execution (drops mostly and some special teams miscues) and the players themselves “buying in” (like they showed in the second half). So “chill pill” today for now (for me anyways). Go Warriors.
University of Buffalo offensive line has blocked for a back that rushed for 242 yards 5 TDs in the first half vs Kent State (had 301 last game) where he was mostly untouched on some long runs. They have also not allowed a sack in their 3 games so far this season.
Blocking scheme. Seems so simple, especially when you have good linemen. Simple for Buffalo O-line. IDK. Our “Boys” can do it. Focus. Trust.
Buffalo RB Patterson ended up rushing for 409 yds in Buffalo’s 70-41 win over Kent State. He scored 8TDs in the game.
