ON THIS DATE IN 1986: Al Noga sets UH sack record

Down 13-7 and trotting onto the field for what seemed like the 100th time, the Noga boys had enough.

Defensive tackle Al Noga and outside linebacker Petelo Noga combined to drop Bulldogs quarterback Kevin Sweeney five times and Hawaii beat Fresno State 24-13 in front of an Aloha Stadium crowd of 35,546.

Al Noga had three sacks in the game, set Hawaii’s career sack record with his 17th to pass Alvis Satele. He had nine tackles in the game to share the lead with Everette Wade. Al Noga’s single-season mark still stands and the closest anyone has come is 13 by Travis LaBoy in 2003 and Mark Odom in 1989.

Pete Noga had two sacks even though Dick Tomey dropped eight players into coverage with only the Nogas and Colin Scotts asked to provide pressure.

Sweeney came into the game needing 304 yards to break Doug Flutie‘s NCAA record of 10,579. Hawaii limited him to 134.

“They were awesome, I couldn’t tell one from the other,” Fresno State coach Jim Sweeney, Kevin’s father, said of the Nogas.
