Hawaii men’s volleyball: Rado Parapunov, Colton Cowell, Patrick Gasman will be back for 2021 season
Aloha ball will have to wait another year.
Volleyball coach Charlie Wade confirmed his four seniors — including two-time All-American Rado Parapunov — will return for the 2021 season.
It was presumed their eligibility had ended in March when the NCAA canceled the remainder of the spring-sport seasons because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But later that month, the NCAA’s Division I Council approved a measure providing spring-sport players “an additional season of competition and an extension of their period of eligibility.” Translation: Each athlete’s current class standing was frozen, meaning a senior this year will remain a senior next academic year, a sophomore will be a sophomore, and so forth. The returning seniors would not count against next year’s scholarship limits, but they only could receive financial aid up to the amount they are receiving this year.

The council left the implementation to the individual schools.Today, UH decided each of its 10 spring programs will have the option of bringing back this year’s seniors. UH’s stipulation is each program will pay for its added scholarship costs.
“No new institutional funds will be used,” UH athletic director David Matlin wrote in an news release.
UH has 10 teams that are deemed spring-semester sports, including men’s volleyball. The Rainbow Warriors were ranked No. 2 nationally when their season was canceled in March. Today, Wade confirmed the 2021 returns of Parapurov, an opposite who was named to the AVCA’s All-America first team the past two seasons; outside hitter Colton Cowell, who was picked to the AVCA’s second team; middle blocker Patrick Gasman, who was a second-team selection in 2019 and 2020, and serving specialist James Anastassiades. Wade said Anastassiades is likely to be hired as a graduate assistant.
Coupled with the addition of the incoming recruits, Wade said, “the energy in the practice gym is going to be at a really high level — super intense, super competitive.”
Wade said the four seniors are set to complete work on bachelor’s degrees next week. They are expected to enter master’s programs in the fall.
“I was really hoping for another opportunity to come back here,” Parapunov said. “The news we received today, I think, (was) amazing.”
Wade said it will take restructuring the volleyball budget and fund-raising to pay for the seniors’ additional season.
The UH baseball team has four seniors. The Rainbow Wahine softball team has two seniors.

this is great news but are they going to play without fans? How about the team schedule, will all teams be able to play? will travel be restricted? will the games be on pay-per-view to help raise funds as the fans in the stands will not be as large, if any, due to social distance policies? will games tickets be raised to cover the additional cost and reduced revenue? believe football and basketball will be faced with similar questions.

I think everyone needs a new paradigm for fundraising. The in-person staples, such as banquets and even golf tournaments aren’t going to bring in enough money to make it worthwhile.

#13….at this stage, no. If UH was a powerhouse like Boise, maybe. A 4 star going to a mid major is kind of a step down Yes, he may still have cousins or aunties here but his mom, dad and brother are all on the mainland. Taulia’s mom and dd would have hard time attending many of his games with Tua being on the other end of the country.
My guess is he will either find a school near their home in Alabama where his family can watch him or find one near Florida so they can watch both kids without travelling too far.
Would have love to see Sol Jay Maiava return “home” but he chose BYU so that sucked. I thought Sol Jay was a better fit for the offense we ran. He would be great for the offense Graham will run.

I think the theory is that Tualia is probably going to move someplace close to where Tua’s now creating in his legacy. With the Miami Dolphins, you would think that Tualia would be thinking of UCF, USF, Florida, Florida State, FAU, FIU or University of Miami. Depending on the debacle, it’s up to Tualia to make the decision.
#15, The NCAA deferred to each school to make their own decision for each sport on whether or not to allow their current seniors to return for another season of eligibility next season based on each school’s particular roster & financial situation.

It’s also up to the individual athlete, which is why James Anastassiades will be a GA and not playing.
I’m wondering if the conference schedule will be the same as it would have been this season, as far as home and away games. LBSU, Irvine and UCSD were all supposed to be home games this year. Too bad we won’t get to see James play against his brother.
I’m guessing the NCAA tournament will be played at Ohio State as scheduled.

It will be interesting to see how our legislatures approach the reopening of schools including UH. Also the Mountain West Presidents will need to meet and decide the fate of football this year. Hawaii is in a good position as far as COVID 19 is concerned, but the California schools are in bad shape and might not open till after September.

Was really looking forward to Warrior football, but it doesn’t look good. The California schools are not going to have a fall semester, so it looks like the Mountain West and PAC 12 will not be playing and it will affect all fall sports on the west coast.

so far, all the medical experts testifying at the House of Rep stated that they fully expect a resurgence of COVID-19 if ‘states’ open too soon, cannot control their residents on social distancing, people adopt the ‘LIVE ‘N LET LIVE’ philosophy, states do not have a valid ” contact tracing ” plan in the fall or early winter — at least 2 anticipate nearly double the number of deaths which means about 163,000 total between now and November/December time frame

Most interesting how COVID 19 is included in everything we do. Although Maui County, Kauai County, and Hawaii County residents have worked hard at flattening the curve, somehow they don’t get recognized for their efforts. This looks similar for UH Athletics. They do a good job of representing Hawaii but their support level is very low. But at the same time UH academia does little to help itself. Wouldn’t it be great if UH Medical School could say “We are working to help medically alleviate the COVID19 problem in Hawaii”. Even tho UH football program is at a standstill, the coaches are working to build their program. UH Athletics need our support and be super if we can get more supporters who will help financially. I am trying and hope the light at the end of the tunnel gets brighter.

ST…good article on Coach Graham but it’s always been the number one goal of all the coaches we’ve had to recruit Hawaii. Limited success but we’ve had some really great athletes who chose to represent and play here defending the aina.

Willie K made one of my best memories ever when he gathered several hundred Hawaii fans the night before the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Bourbon St. and lead us all in singing Hawaii Pono’i. I recall Dobelle being UH President back then. Whatever people thought of him, he pushed for “Rainbow stadium” be named after Les Murakami…it was the house Les built so why wait for him to pass away before naming the stadium after him? Les Murakami stadium was uniquely named.

2020 was the strongest season Trap had on hand, best in the entire era. Wins against Wazzu (2-2), a win against Vanderbilt on the road, and a winning series against Oregon (3-1). The team was on pace to possibly a good winning season with the games that were left.
The fact that COVID-19 scrutinized the remaining season just hurts to watch. Now there’s multiple challenges with Trap’s team once 2021 rolls around the corner. Demeter and Loewen could be heading into the MLB draft, and who knows how many more could be facing there. If the 4 seniors aren’t going to return, there is a chance it’ll be a tall rebuild for Trap. Wong suffered a torn ACL during the COVID crisis, Fogel could be a question mark if he leaves for the draft because without Wong, who can cover his position? It could be seeing a repeat of the 2019 season if Fogel leaves to the draft and nobody to back up Wong for the center field position.
With 12 newcomers coming in as well, Trap is probably thinking of cutting the dead weight off the team if he gets too many people on the roster. Plus too, you have 11.7 scholarships on hand. Trap needs to think strategically how he’s going to play this out. The only thing I’m hoping for is if 2021 will begin with a spark, playing like they have some unfinished business, and especially, making up what they left behind from 2020.
I just hope we can recover from this before we get flushed out again with a COVID avalanche again.
I have no idea of how much it cost to run UH monthly and I hope the administration has enough to cover the cost of personnel and maintenance at UH. The athletic department staff and employees appear to be covered, but for how much longer? The scheduled football season brings in money to help pay for their expenses, so does the students whose tuition payment help pay for the program staff. Opening UH fall semester does not look bright, if UH IS A PLACE OF HIGHER LEARNING, shouldn’t they be able to come up with proposals on reopening instead of just sitting on their asses. They should be explaining to the governor and legislature their plans to reopen, but somehow they have no answers. If they don’t have ideas or clues, ask the people of Hawaii for input. My suggestion is to announce UH will open as scheduled with all the social restrictions except classes size will be limited or smaller. Go Bows.
Off the top of my head itI think the budget is already set and approved so there should be monies to run the school. Don’t know what other responsibilities might have been added that could put additional financial stains on the school…ie…on-line classes, disinfection requirements etc…

If they already have a set time for the games already, it would be alarming to figure out if they as well are going to have a season. Jumping the broom might be a bit early to set up a WVB schedule is one thing, but when dealing with the COVID crisis, that’s something else. I hope Robyn catches on quick with planning the schedule before it becomes a bit dire.

I estimate that within the next three months he will be an ex president of Michigan. Academia may look good but money comes from athletics at Michigan or any power 5 schools. What’s going to be the true test is how Todd Graham approaches this season. After the 2020 season, he’s got a lot of holes in the O-Line that need help with. Gene Pryor, Kohl Levao, Alesana Sunia, Michael Eletise, Ernest Moore, Taaga Tuulima, and Joey Nu’uanu-Kuhi’iki are going to graduate. Chances are that if they decide to finish their education here, we could be seeing Ramsey Aviu, Micah Vanterpool and Ra Elkington leaving as well. Potentially, 10 O-Line could be leaving after 2020.
The key is if they can keep any of their returners healthy. 2019 had some strange mishaps with our offense. Taaga was the only one that hasn’t gotten hurt when Levao, Hensley, Vaipulu, and Manning have been hurt here and there. Rolo had to improvise with creativity on the O-Line with utilizing different combinations with players that haven’t gotten much gaming time (Gene Pryor, Alesana Sunia) and used players that are new to this (Bubba Wa’a). Joey has took some playing time, but was utilized sparingly. Because Stovall was dismissed after the Air Force game, it meant more action for Lincoln Victor, thereby burning off his redshirt. Kumoku Noa was here and there in his time at UH. He didn’t play at all in 2016 and 2018, got some time in 2017, and got hurt again. He only played against New Mexico and got hurt against Fresno State. Phillips kept his redshirt and does give us good enough reason to help aid the likes of Smart and Stovall (Back with the team) and Victor to increase the depth. Maybe we could see more action from the receivers in the 2020 season.
Now, I don’t know if defense will be a struggle. Considering that they still have some versatility on defense. Muasau lost his redshirt because of the team’s lack of linebacker depth. That being said, once Pavihi comes back, we’ll be ready once again. Mason Vega has had issues with staying healthy before coming to UH, especially after dealing with a shortened stint at Portland State. After Kalen Hicks hurt his hamstring, the depth at the secondary was going to be a tricky situation. Afraid of not being creative, the guys returning that didn’t burn off their redshirts (Nalu Emerson, Michael Washington, Tiger Peterson) do give us hope to increase the depth on defense entirely. Paired with the leadership of Wilson, Davis, and Ford, it gives me hope that maybe we can be decent and maybe competitive.
Now, Graham has coached 4 different schools to lead teams to college bowls in the first year. I wouldn’t be surprised if he led the team to a bowl game with the Green H and Tapa trim and continue the first year bowl streak. We’ll just have to wait and find out.
All I can say is that Coach Graham and his present staff are very good at recruiting. From September we will see if their coaching is better than their recruiting. GO WARRIORS

You would be surprised. Power 5 schools everywhere have tight ends on their roster. Most of our roster from the run-and-shoot consisted of wide receivers. At least one tight end is expected to join us. The Texas Tech transfer in Tyler Carr. 6’4″, 240 lbs., used sparingly in games. Was used in 6 games as a freshman, then 4 in sophomore year, before using his junior year to appear in 3 games.

If at least 2,000 of our season ticket holders give the $25 of the credit refunded from last season, we can meet 50% of the amount needed. UH may have notified you of your credit and asked if you wanted a refund, credit towards next seasons ticket, or to contribute to the UH foundation Fund. I, myself, did not receive my notice from UH, but later learned if no reply was received from me a credit would be applied to next season. That’s what we’re looking at right now. And…you said the SF 49ers use a blocking WR/TE? Well…Texas Tech transfer Tyler Carr does provide something like that. In 2018, he was used as a tight end blocker/fullback. In 2017, Carr was used as a defensive line before the transition to fullback. He’s basically versatile for Todd Graham’s needs, if necessary.

UH Administration agreed to allow the four MVB seniors, James Anastassiades, Colton Cowell, Patrick Gasman and Rado Parapunov to return for another year. However,, according to athletic director’s Matlin’s news release, no new institutional funds will be used. Instead, the MVB program will restructure its budget and fundraising to pay for the seniors additional season.
We can all help out and be a part of another successful season and our goal for a National Championship. If at least 2000 of our season ticket holders give $25 of the credit refunded from last season, we can meet 50% of the amount needed. UH may have notified you of your credit and asked if you wanted a refund, credit or to contribute to the UH Foundation Fund. I, myself, did not received my notice from UH but learned later that if no reply was received from me, a credit would be applied for next season.
Join me to help our seniors. Pass the word to your ohana and friends. Let’s show our Men’s Volleyball Team, each and every player, “WE BELIEVE”.

McInnis, Luis, Reardon and Lewis don’t have much that they can do. Since McInnis covers more of the women’s basketball and softball programs, Luis covers the volleyball programs, Lewis and Reardon, usually would cover anything if it’s anything that would be probable about the sports programs in general. But Tsai, he’s practically everywhere recently.
Since no word has yet been mentioned when our quarantine will be uplifted, UH football and women’s volleyball programs are in a sit-and-wait debacle while Matlin is trying to figure out when the students can make their return. However, we still don’t know when that time will come. Caldwell and Ige are practically making this a slow and painful wait for everybody. Unfortunately, now that Vaipulu’s being put on bail due to breaking the 14-day quarantine, it’s going to shake up the UH football program to the core. And in general, the UH students are probably going to have to wait out for when they can return.
