Hawaii men’s basketball: Jessiya Villa transferring to Chaminade
Jessiya Villa is taking his basketball talents less than a mile away.
Villa, who redshirted as a UH freshman this past season, is transferring to Chaminade. He entered the NCAA’s transfer portal two weeks ago.
“Coach (Eric) Bovaird and I have had a relationship even prior to my graduation at Kahuku,” Villa said.
Villa’s grandfather, Bill Villa, is retiring in June as Chaminade’s athletic director.
Villa was born in Hawaii but grew up mostly on the mainland. He enrolled at Kahuku High as a senior, and was named the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s 2017 Player of the Year. Villa accepted a scholarship offer from UH before going on a two-year church mission to Ghana. He returned this past summer.
Villa redshirted this past season. When it appeared he would have a limited role this coming season, Villa entered the transfer portal.
His reasoning for joining a Division II program was twofold: He would not have to redshirt again and he could stay in Hawaii. He also said he was impressed with Bovaird’s history of helping Chaminade graduates play professionally.
“I know Chaminade is known for improving their players and helping their players follow their dreams and aspirations of playing professional ball,” Villa said. “That’s been a dream of mine since I was little.”
Villa added: “My family and I are happy with this decision. We know it’ll be the best for me.”
Wishing you the best, Jessiya Villa.
GO WARRIORS !!!
good choice. now only if cameron ing gets smart and decide to transfer, maybe HPU? you can see uh is stocking up with guards, so ing’s chances will be slim.
Wise choice for Villa. To me, this doesn’t mean that Villa couldn’t play at the D1 level, but moreso shows that the UH coaches were obviously going in a direction that didn’t involve him and he made a decision where he could get the best collegiate experience out of his next 4 years. Will be interesting to see the Chaminade-UH games going forward the next couple seasons.
Best wishes for Villa on his next adventure. Still optimistic that Coach G can put together his best Warrior team this year. GO WARRIORS.
Although details have not been finalized,
Hawaii head coach Charlie Wade expects this year’s four seniors
to return for the 2021 men’s volleyball season. ST’s article.
GO WARBOWS !!!
…………
GO WARRIORS !!!
BEAT arizona !!!
premature, but it would be so nice to see UH beat Arizona at home
Sorry Jessiya didn’t get much playing time. Would have been nice to see him on the floor a bit.
@ NorthShoreFan
This past season was a redshirt year for Villa so at he willl have 4 years going forward at Chaminade and won’t have to sit out per transfer rules unlike Carper who will have to sit out a year at Missouri St. and will have only one year left to play as a result.
Dawson Carper started 22 games as a true Sophomore… IF NCAA still requires him to sit out a year, since he never red-shirted, he’ll have two more years eligibility remaining…At UH, he has extended his shooting range out to three.
Happy Easter, ‘Bow and Warrior fans!
Mahalo….SweatyMurphy….I just wanted to see what he can do at the D1 level. I know he can play.
NorthShoreFan,
Me as well. We will still be able to see what he can do against D1 competition when we ultimately watch him play at the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.
Sweaty….that’s right!….forgot about the tournament….Mahalos….
