Rainbow Forecast: Here comes the ‘Greatest Hawaii men’s basketball team of all time’ bracket
In lieu of any actual University of Hawaii sporting events this week — or for the foreseeable future — we thought we would try something different and fun.
We’re making an attempt to settle a debate.
What was the greatest Hawaii men’s basketball team of all time?
Some felt the most recent NCAA Tournament edition, the Rainbow Warriors of 2015-16, achieved that distinction by becoming the first team in program history to win a tourney game and setting a program record for wins at 28-6.
Still others feel that the “Fabulous Five” NCAA team of 1971-72 deserves top billing. After all, that group was the first to reach the Big Dance, and went 24-3.
You might also get an argument from the 2001-02 squad that went 27-6. Or maybe one of the “Dynamic Duo” teams of the late 1990s. The NIT quarterfinal team of 1989-90, perhaps?
For this 100th season of UH men’s basketball, we’ve culled what we feel are the best 16 teams in program history and, starting Thursday — when the first NCAA Round of 64 games would’ve been contested — will open it up to you, the fans, to vote on winners on Twitter, starting with two matchups a day through the opening weekend.
The competition will run through April 6 to declare our “champion,” the same day the NCAA championship would’ve been held in Atlanta.
Stay tuned. The full bracket will be unveiled on Wednesday.
It might be nice if you mentioned their names.
Sounds like fun.
I use to dream, what if my mom changed my name to Dwight Holiday?
When the Fab Five team went to the Big Dance, I think it was still a 32 team field.
Yeah man. I ain’t gonna lie. Id have to Google to remember who backed up Savo and who was the 3rd playmaker behind ac and alika. I’d love to see rosters before I vote. If can, can.. if no can, no worries.
We’ll have more details on each team for the matchups page that will go out today.
Still remember the 98 team with AC and Alika. It was BS that they didn’t go to the dance.
