NCAA baseball: Oregon vs. Hawaii, Game #4
The day game provided few bright spots for the Rainbow Warriors in a 13-2 loss to Oregon at Les Murakami Stadium.
> The ‘Bows already had clinched their second series win of the year by winning the first three games. But any hope of a sweep vanished when the Ducks kept scoring and scoring and pitcher Brett Walker kept posting zero after zero. Walker did not allow a baserunner until Tyler Murray‘s single with one out in the sixth.
> Tai Atkins, who has been so steady in relieft, just did not have it in his first start. HE was ousted in the third inning after being tagged for five runs. Head coach Mike Trapasso indicated Atkins would return to the bullpent, where he is both more comfortable and aggressive.
> The ‘Bows were able to get some work for pitcher Nick Miller, a JC transfer making his first appearance, and at bats for reliever Vince Reilly, who pinch hit and then played right field.
> Chicago State has assured Trapasso it will play in this coming week’s series. Chicago State’s basketball teams had canceled road games in reaction to coronavirus threats. “They’re planning on coming,” Trapasso said.

We’re in the middle of the fifh, which brings us to the half-game report:
> Kenyon Yovan rocketed a two-run homer in the first and Aaron Zavala blasted a solo shot in the fifth as the Ducks lead 6-0.
> It was another brief outing for a UH starting pitcher. Tai Atkins, in his first college start, lasted 2.2 innings, allowing six hits and five earned runs.
> Brett Walker was perfect through four innings, retiring every ‘Bow he faced.

It’s the series between Oregon and Hawaii today at the Les.
The ‘Bows won the first three games, including last night’s drama when they rallied from a 5-0 deficit, then scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the ninth.
Tai Atkins, a freshman, makes his first collegiate start after three relief appearances. Atkins was ailing after returning from last week’s road trip, but is OK now.
LET’S GO BOWS … LET’S GO BOWS … LET’S GO BOWS !!!
BEAT THEM DUCKS !!!
I think you forgot one bit of info on there, Stephen.
Hawaii winning a series against a Power 5 opponent. Last time that happened was in 2010 by, who else, Oregon. (Although, not sure if you can count Minnesota in 2017 just because one was a road game, and the other was part of a classic, that and it’s only 2 games as juxtaposed to 3 or 4 games.)
In hindsight, this power 5 gauntlet proved to be a great run for the baseball team because they know that they have the capability of holding their own against tough competition. Even when they pushed Vanderbilt to the edge in the finale, despite the loss, they managed to come out hungry and prepared, thus giving Hawaii all they can muster up against Oregon. Then again, this IS coming from a team with a new head coach. I have a feeling they’ll do well in conference play. It’s just a matter if this team can come out swinging and take it one game at a time.
Oops…there was actually one extra detail missed. Hawaii in their 3 wins against the Ducks combined by a victory of 11 runs (Game 1 by 2, game 2 by 8, and game 3 by 1). Oregon in this one actually won by 11 in this one game alone.
Uh…yeah…I’m as confused as you are on this, Stephen, but I think Hawaii probably laid an egg on this one. I do have a theory on this. They probably lost it on purpose because they already used up so much energy and already proved their good against a power 5 opponent that they were probably were trying to save up their energy in the upcoming series against Chicago State, which I would probably imagine would be a good enough reason. Trap did use up so much bullpen and the pitching I could imagine is tired at that point and Trap would have loved to have the pitchers’ arms fresh and prepared.
Here’s what the series had ended up using:
Game 1 – Logan Pouelsen, Buddie Pindel, Li’i Pontes, Vince Reilly, Jeremy Wu-Yelland
Game 2 – Aaron Davenport, Calvin Turchin
Game 3 – Brandon Ross, Cade Smith, Cade Halemanu, Vince Reilly (2x), Carter Loewen
Game 4 – Tai Atkins, Li’i Pontes (2x), Nick Miller, Tyler Dyball, Calvin Turchin (2x), Carter Loewen (2x), Jeremy Wu-Yelland (2x)
He used up nearly everybody, except Trevor Ichimura, whom they’re still waiting on whether or not NCAA will allot him to play and redshirt him. But man was Trap not afraid to show up the depth. I have a feeling that this shows an example of the guys he doesn’t utilize that often to get some quality experience and understand what they know they need to work on and improve.
Whoa, what happened. Can’t be first
hello, Whitey!!
up early, eh!
looking forward to July and fishing!!!

I was talking about in this age of the 2000s. We haven’t had a series win over a power 5 opponent in 10 years.

Man I miss the days when I first started to follow this blog….filled with news from posters I don’t even read from anymore.
Anyone have any info of spring practice?
March 27….first practice…not sure on time but it might e 6:00 am
Should the season end this week (highly probable) for Beeman and Ganot they should spend some extra time combing California (maybe the entire West Coast) for the missing pieces that will get them to the next level. They both lose heart and soul type, proficient seniors but both coaches have assembled a nice roster of pieces that can fill different roles in interesting ways. Both will need that one player to get them to the top of the conference.
For Beeman its a critical off season. It always seems like there is such low expectations for her teams as they trudge through a usually difficult, challenging, and overmatched pre-conference schedule. But somehow they do manage to keep pace towards the top of the conference and finish respectably. Always seems (to someone like me; the casual UH WBB fan) like Beeman’s players develop slowly. This season though she had a handful players contribute and get noticed. Looking forward, you can see how the returning pieces can make them front runners next season depending on if Beeman can acquire that “missing” piece. Somebody well rounded. Maybe offensive minded, able to score some and get to the FT line. An offensive complimentary piece.
For Ganot this off season is just as critical. The low expectation period for him is usually during recruiting. Hard to figure out why its so hard for him. But he does have Gerlufsen (for now) this off season. He has already made an impact recruiting wise earlier this year. So there is a little more optimism that getting a “targeted” recruit is a little more possible now. I think he needs a JC (or portal) wing/2G who can be deferred to when
the called play breaks down. Someone who can create his own shot at anytime. The returning/incoming roster has almost everything else on it. You can see how the youth on this incoming roster can impact success. They just need an experienced player who can help Buggs (like Ahmed would have this year) in the half court. Lots of options for Ganot, especially if Hulland can get healthy, Carper can improve, Villa can contribute, and Reily is as good as advertised. Exciting? I think so.
Coach Graham brings tremendous enthusiasm to the Warriors. Now we will see how contagious it is for Warrior football. I like his spirit and upbeat enthusiasm and have a feeling that we will be in for a Warrior Delight this season. Go for it Warriors.
sackkabooya: I’m not sure if Beeman has an open scholarship. She’s already signed five with five openings unless someone leaves or one of the five high school signees doesn’t qualify. Ganot has one open scholarship, assuming the kid from Australia stays true to his verbal pledge.
12.
I think Dawson Carper can improve, too. He gets exposed when other players go into slumps; he’s a work-in-progress. If the other players performed to their capabilities, he would be less conspicuous.
Clyde
Yeah, I’m always unsure of the scholarship situations. But there is no question that it is critical to find/obtain that one missing piece for both programs. They are both so close to being “complete” teams, especially in the Big West. Lots of fans not real satisfied with the mediocrity so they both need to get to a higher level. Hopefully there is one that can develop offensively for Beeman. As for Ganot I hope he can find that last “piece”. They so close. Thanks for the scholarship info.
11. Someone said for spring practice, subject to verification.
Tues/Thurs: 7:30-9:30am

MBB and WBB season pau. Big West cancelled tourney.
Now all spring sports suspended. Don’t know if practices will be suspended also.
#13 – I’m very hopeful, but not if they can’t practice.
#10, #11, #17 – found this on mwc news.
All I can gather is Spring Game is on Apr 25.

Julissa Tago finishes up her career with 15 points. I have no doubt in my mind that the team would have reached the conference final.
I was so focused on fans contracting the virus. Somehow it never occurred to me that a player could get it. Within ten seconds upon hearing the news, I knew sports was cancelled. If Hawaii/CSUF was the last women’s basketball game of the season, they’re the national champs because they’re the last team who won.
Right now, this hurts. I’ve been waiting a long time for a competitive baseball team. Taking a game from Vanderbilt was so unexpected. What an accomplishment, considering how they had to scratch and crawl to defeat Hilo at the outset. Special shout-out to my former co-worker Joel S. If you’re reading this: You were always on-point whenever you opened your mouth. You’re the one person who got it from day one.

With all of UH sports on hold….what to report on now?
The NCAA may grant additional eligibility to 2020 spring sports student -athletes.
With all the negative hype about China virus by the media and government , it will be an uphill battle to get normal everyday life. Excellent PR work by big business create panic buying and make things worse for the general population
No Mo Nothing on TV. Bum Kicks! Think Nascar is still on
Watching sports is what kind of keeps me alive in a way. Without not having any on to distract me from reality kills me.

As the SA sports page shrinks perhaps there is more time to reinvigorate the Warrior Beat? I’ll definitely be “jones-ing” for some content and Warrior/Wahine info during the “lockdown” that might be coming soon. It is definitely safe here (on the Warrior Beat) with less than 50 people “gathering” on this site lately. No mask necessary. Hopefully it can get back to normal.
I had to Google “bum kicks”…. Bum Kick = Bummer, downer…. Not a Kamen Rider V3 finishing move.
Governor Ige… Not a real confidence inspiring speaker with his mono-tone…. I thought Matlin was (inspiring) despite the slight stutter. Rolo and Wade can get a little “goofy” but they can “bring you to tears” with their passionate tone.
Trap sounds like part minister/part car salesman with his calm (unemotional?) style. Ganot seems like someone who holds back emotion (he makes less eye contact to me) so comes across as kind of stiff. Not unmoving though but little awkward.
Beeman (to me) likes to impress with her slightly “complicated” explanations of things. Coolen is such a “laid back”, “pleasant” toned explainer. And as for Ah Mow she has a subtle, reserved, yet frank way of framing things. Emotional for her I think.
Wallace was gruff and awesome in his style. Coach Jones could get a little “babbly” (seemed hard for him to “uncomplicate” his thoughts) at times with the media here and even with the XFL. Chow was a real “blamer” sometimes. Angrily passionate “old man” style. But the most articulate speaker was Shoji. Awesome. Smooth. Easy to follow analysis from his mind to yours…. Maybe Ige just needs some practice.

I laugh when I see the SHIP commercials with Coaches Shoji and Goo along with Jim Leahey.
Coach Shoji looks the stiffest and reads the teleprompter probably the most out of the three.
Funny stuff.
Patti
Yeah Leahey always had a fun side to his style. A real pro in his time. Goo’s style of speaking reminds me of someone like a doctor or dentist who criticizes (scolds?) you in that serious, sincere tone when you never “take care”. Shoji was surprisingly a little stiff in those ads…. As for Graham, I think we need to hear how he address the media after some practices and then some games. Definitely has some inspirational style to his tone.
Wow, Warriors football coaches are not being passive like the past in their recruiting. They are going after talented players and doing a good job evaluating future Warriors
Ai eee soos . Salamat PO for the recruiting info. Going head to head with the power 5 schools is challenging but the recruits know UH is a great alternative

#33 – the funny thing about the commercials is that Shoji and Goo are endorsing a product that they will never need, since they are UH retirees.
Ai eee soos. Any more recruiting news for the Warriors?
Maybe this would be a good time to get/do in depth player profiles and interviews.
Nothing else to report on……tsai….quarantine blues….

To Sackabooya, “BUM KICKS” has been around from at least the 60’s best of my recollections. Also, why does the UH baseball teams use big preseason games against Power 5 schools as scrimmages trying out green players to evaluate. AS HERM EDWARDS ONCE SAID ON NATIONAL TV: “YOU PLAY THE GAMES TO WIN”. PERIOD
