Whoever decided to put this tournament during the weekend of the Punahou Carnival is not very smart. Attendance will be low due to traffic in the area. Should’ve been either last weekend or the following weekend…and before you say ‘But, men’s basketball!’, think again which sport has gone to more NCAA Final Fours in the past 4 years and who draws more per contest…

Carnival are for the younger folks and I don’t think the older folks will have trouble deciding what event to attend. As for traffic…there is plenty of parking. I doubt any of the three days will sell out but will still get plenty of traffic due to UH softball and baseball opening up too. If the ticket sales was to spike, I’m sure the campus people will be on their toes and open up the upper campus lots to fans.

Volleyball have been away for almost 3 weeks. I’m(probably thousands of others) are dying for the team to play again. Queen and Concordia are not big names so they will not draw but Saturday’s match against Irvine will be at least 5,000, I predict

When was the last time 4 of the top 5 was from one conference? Maybe when the MPSF was dominating.

How’s this for a scheduling quirk? Concordia hosts UC San Diego Tuesday night (2/04) before flying out here to play 3 straight nights starting Thursday. I don’t think they’ll have enough rest and be able to adjust to the change in time zones in such a short time. We’ll see…

    2. I, too, am looking forward to seeing our team play again. I’ll be there all 3 nights.

    3. Last year, Week 9: 1. Long Beach State, 2. Hawaiʻ, 3. UC Irvine, 4. UC Santa Barbara, 5. UCLA. Link to previous polls available at: https://www.avca.org/res/uploads/media/Week-by-Week_15.zip.

    4. The time zone is two hours, and we’re talking about college students. I don’t think the timezones will be more of an issue than just the amount of games they will be playing and the flight.

How is it that a match against a ranked opponent isn’t being televised? Friday’s match against #14 Concordia is not on TV. Way to go, Spectrum.

    1. not like UHVB hasn’t played on Carnival weekend before. Plenty of times there’s been a conflict. Have often written that matches got over in time for fans to get to Carnival for a malasada.
Before I say men’s (and women’s) basketball .. the Big West is in charge of scheduling. Basketball is in conference season, this is a preseason men’s volleyball tournament.
Again, not like this type of scheduling hasn’t happened before. Volleyball has always had to work around basketball. Perhaps more people are paying attention now.
    4. yep, interesting scheduling.
    6. you are welcome to complain to Spectrum. They chose to broadcast Baseball’s season opener.

Just watched Concordia’s match today. The Eagles were swept at home by UCSD. It’ll be interesting to see how they recover for Thursday’s match against UC Irvine followed by their matchup with Hawaiʻi on Friday.

I assume CUI will arrive some time tomorrow morning and put in a light practice later in the day in preparation for the tournament. Good luck to all of the teams.

    new thread up for Wednesday
    8. yep, just the second home match for the Eagles. Swept 25-17, 25-22, 25-20 by UCSD.
not sure what time CUI is getting in today. would think they’d fly out of John Wayne (SNA)
They are scheduled for full practice today in the arena. Doesn’t mean they have to use the full time.
UCI and Queens both were scheduled for a practice Tuesday but cancelled.
