Warriors used 12 of their 15 players on the trip. Brett Sheward replaces Jakob Thelle at setter last three sets. Gage Worsley with 11 digs. Hawaii (7-0) with 6 aces, 12.5 blocks. Freshman Guilherme Voss in on the final two blocks of Set 4 that gives the Warriors the 27-25 win.
Hawaii holds off two set points at 24-23 and 25-24, ties at 24 and 25. closes it out on the two blocks. Ramblers 5 aces, 7 blocks.
Team travels Sunday to Tennessee. At Lincoln Memorial Monday and King on Tuesday.
FINAL: Rado Parapunov put down a career-high 24 kills, Colton Cowell added 19 and No. 1 Hawaii surged back from a set down for the second straight day on its road trip to beat No. 12 Loyola Chicago 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 27-25.

5:19: BLOCK Colton Cowell and UH has done it again, winning in four sets after dropping the first for the second straight day.
5:15: Sheward and Voss combine on a block, giving UH its first match point … TIMEOUT Ramblers.
5:14: 25-all. Parapunov with a new season high 23 kills.
5:13: Ruh roh … Loyola set point, 24-23. Will UH rally back? Parapunov squares it at 24, and it’s going to extra points.
5:10: Teams are going point for point into the red zone …
5:06: For the moment, UH goes up, 16-15, on Parapunov’s second ace of the match.
5:03: Hawaii has drawn even at 14 on Parapunov’s 20th kill of the night.
4:58: Loyola is going to make UH earn it. Mini run here by the Ramblers and they lead 12-8.
4:54: As you’d expect, Galloway and Sheward remain in the match. Gotta go with what works.
4:53: All right, I’m back. UH and Loyola knotted at 6-6 here in Set 4.
4:46: Going to step out for a few minutes for the concessions here at the Stan Sheriff Center (getting ready for women’s basketball against Cal State Fullerton). You guys will be OK.
Set 3: Hawaii 25, Loyola Chicago 20
4:45: Sheward goes to the middle to Gasman on UH’s second set point and he puts it away. UH takes a 2-1 match lead.
4:42: ACE off the tape by Mouchlias, his second of the game and it’s back to five. Timeout Loyola.
4:41: Service error by Cowell and an ace by Loyola’s Luke Denton gets the Ramblers back within three, momentarily. Parapunov puts a stop to that with a putdown kill.
4:38: UH gets to the red zone leading 20-14.
4:33: Wade successfully challenges an in/out call and it’s an ace for Parapunov. It’s a four-point run for the ‘Bows and a 17-10 lead.
4:31: The lead is 15-10 for Hawaii at the media timeout. UH hitting .571 in this frame and .342 for the match. “Shewie” is up to 21 assists.
4:28: GALLOWAY. He got up there from the back row and it’s a four-point lead. He just followed that up with a solo block. The kid is good.
4:25: My goodness. Cowell with the emphatic putdown of an overpass, and he wasn’t even really close to the net when he jumped. Three-point lead for the ‘Bows, 9-6.
4:22: “Uncle Pat” Gasman with a big-time solo rejection in the middle and UH ekes ahead 5-4.
4:19: Sheward remains in the game at setter for Set 3.
4:14: UH has taken the lead in blocks today, 4.5-4.0.
4:13: Parapunov is up to 14 kills on 24 swings and Cowell 11 on 22. Rest of the team have combined for seven.
Set 2: Hawaii 25, Loyola Chicago 23
4:09: Cowell puts it down from the back row and UH keeps set point alive long enough for Patrick Gasman and Galloway to combine on a block. UH evens the match 1-1.
4:07: Sheward to Parapunov and UH RETAKES the lead, 23-22. Timeout Ramblers.
4:04: UH goes down three late in the set, but Dimitrios Mouchlias serves up an ace and UH is within 22-21.
3:58: With UH sputtering, Wade gives freshman Chaz Galloway another look off the bench. Galloway helped turn things around mid-match yesterday. However, Ramblers lead 20-17. Timeout Wade, again.
3:54: It’s a three-point run for the Ramblers, who go up 16-15. UH hitting only .167 in this set because of six attack errors.
3:52: Warriors get to the media timeout leading 15-13. Timeout Wade.
3:50: UH opens up a five-point lead, 13-8, but that’s been cut to two for the moment.
3:45: Parapunov picking up where he left off last night. He’s got 10 kills on 15 swings.
3:42: UH played from behind basically all of Set 1, but they’ve got some better mojo going here. They’re up 6-3 with Sheward running the show.
3:41: There’s UH’s first block (by Guilherme Voss and Parapunov) and UH jumps out 3-0 in Set 2.
3:40: Brett Sheward comes in at setter to spell Jakob Thelle, an earlier appearance than last night.

3:36: For the second straight day, UH drops the opening set. ‘Bows did not record a block.
3:31: UH still having trouble with serve-receive, allowing Loyola to creep ahead again, 21-19. Timeout Charlie Wade. Warriors in danger of dropping the opening set for the second straight day.
3:26: Warriors trailed by four but have narrowed it to a point. Check that, they’ve just tied it up at 19 on a kill and an ace by Cowell. Ramblers call for time.
3:21: UH having trouble offering resistance at the net. No blocks yet and Loyola leads 15-12.
3:18: Uncharacteristic attack error from Cowell there and Ramblers lead by two again, 12-10.
3:16: They’re reviewing that last play for an extra touch on Hawaii, I think. Looks like it will stand.
3:14: Great set from Parapunov to Cowell at the opposite pin for a kill. Ramblers lead 10-9, though.
3:12: Rado Parapunov off to a hot start (3-for-4), but Loyola is going point for point with UH in the early going.
3:06: Colton Cowell back in the starting lineup for UH from his two-match absence, good news for the ‘Bows.
3:05: Loyola gets it started with an ace. Serve-receive was problematic for UH at Lewis, too.

Set 1 was all Rado and that backline defense was missing. I really like Thelle, but the hitters has to push a lot of balls within the 3 meters lines across the net because of how the balls were set.
I’m not sure what Wade is seeing in practice but the setting isn’t gonna cut it against better opponents.
Same could be said about Humler. Chaz has proven yesterday he is worth the start over Humler.
Good to see the back up setter get some playing time.

Sheward and Colton are my players for the night. The team struggled offensively in set 1 but everything changed when Sheward came in. Colton just being Colton. If he continues to olay like this, we can see him being up there with Parapunov as top contenders for player of the year. Still a lot of vball to play, but Hawaii simply can not rely on Rado. The offense has got to be diversified.
28. & 29. — That’s one of the many reasons why Hawaiʻi fans are the best! Add the love of the “Aunties”, and that is the standard of excellence for others to meet.

Wow. Some serious complainers here. Humler might be struggling, but he was a steady passer during the home matches. I wonder what these people will say when Galloway starts inevitably struggling. Everyone has off nights.

My take on the setters. Sheward is shorter with a lower point of contact. Returning players are used to that after Worsley the past few years. Also think Sheward’s set location is a little better. But still like Thelle’s offensive ability and when they connect on the high ball, very hard to stop because they are going over the block.

34 Hot, not complaining but merely calling it as it is. Yes, everyone has off nights, but 2 nights in a row, expect someone else to step in your place instead. Like Cindy have said, they have depth. I’m glad Wade and Co used them, I just wish they’d react a bit sooner. Quite honestly, head to head based on what I saw, while early on the season, Galloway is way ahead of where Humler was as a freshman.
39. Understood. Galloway more explosive offensively, but I thought Humler was consistent as a six-rotation OH during the first couple of weeks. I like that they can be used interchangeably at one of the OH spots now that Cowell’s back.
I didn’t think Humler was doing badly enough to be pulled in favor of Anastassiades in Set 2 (Galloway came in for Anastassiades and not Humler, right?)
At setter, I do like Sheward over Thelle. There were times the past two weeks where I felt like he had a few “look at me!” moments with his tendency to spike the ball on second contact, including one that flew wildly out of bounds.
I don’t like the team chemistry when Thelle is running the show…
Dimi really deserves a lot of credit for coming in off the bench with some wicked jump serves, especially late in set 2.

I don’t recall Humler playing all that much as a Freshman to begin with. But you do? Even with such a limited amount of playing time Humler had last year, you remember his passing ability…? Unless you’re his Coach or someone who’s watched him play many times, more than the rest of us, you don’t know either. How is it that you can automatically compare Humler to where he was in his Freshman year when he barely played?
Galloway, although his jumping ability and quickness gives us a wow factor, as alluded to, his passing is just not there yet. He had just as many errant passes as Humler vs. Lewis. And, during the very few moments he played vs. Grand Canyon he was aced/shanked passes two out of the three times he was served at. Don’t be so quick to judge. Humler was picked over Galloway and the other LSs as the starter for a reason to begin the season. I’d rather have a steady player who can pass and tool the block over someone with amazing athletic ability but may be less reliable on defense.
Great that they got out of the Illinois gauntlet alive. Two 4-set matches, and Rado completely took over the show. 22 kills against Lewis, and 24 against Loyola-Chicago. What helped get the team back on track was some of the contributions to the backups. Chaz gave some oomph to this team, and Dimitrios continues to show his wealth of experience and contribution. Sheward even had a great outing, even though it felt like it went fast for him.
Well, two (Should be feeling easy) matches coming up, King and LMU on the road. I’m wondering if Charlie may allow the bench to take care of King and LMU and allow the starters to get a set or two in those matches. After all, would make sense, especially if Charlie wants to rest his starters and allow the bench players to get some valuable playing time. I’m going to be curious how these guys will do when the pressure continues to mount because they’re going to play much stiffer competition in the long haul, and that’s not including the likes of Stanford on the road (In which this program last won at Stanford in 2012) and BYU at home (In which the last time Hawaii won was in 2014), especially before they prepare the rumble-in-the-jungle bout with LBSU, a team in which was the only team that gave Hawaii all three of their four losses last year.
It’s clear and evident that if this team is to do well and especially make their way to the NCAA title, they gotta continue to play with poise and continue to find ways of being creative to win, even if they have to win ugly. Let’s finish this road trip 4-0 because they won’t play again until early February against Queens, and this team should prepare to rest a long day ahead of them, especially being out for 2 1/2 weeks until their next match. This should at least give them time to relax and rest up.
Cindy, I sincerely appreciate this forum. I’ve learned a lot about people and volleyball. I appreciate your EFFORT and energy in keeping us up with the latest news and doing the play by plays (if you can’t you get someone to cover for you). I like your honesty.
But (isn’t there always a but?), I hope the players do not read the comments here. I’d have a hard time if some of these were aimed at me and I am much older. If they do come here, I think we should become a bit more tactful.

30. Agree on the over-reliance on Parapunov, although the injury to Cowell didn’t leave UH with many options against Lewis. What made last year’s team great was that it had a triumvirate of deadly outsides (Rado, SVT, Cowell). This year, only two (Cowell and Rado). The question is who will step up to be the #3 option. IMO, the team that beats UH is the one that can get UH out of system consistently, stop Cowell (easier than stopping Rado, who will get his points), and prevent a #3 OH from having a great match.
43, 46. I agree that the comparison to last year’s Humler is problematic because of someone named Stijn. That’s why you didn’t see a lot of Humler. However, playing two ranked teams exposed Humler (and Thelle), and the team went with Galloway, despite his passing inexperience. UH needed Galloway’s offense this weekend. But I think we will see Humler (and Thelle) starting the next two matches against lesser competition, and those games won’t really tell us much more about whether Humler/Thelle or Galloway/Sheward should be the long-term starters. Not clear to me we will know much until Feb 14-15 at Stanford .
I agree with Beauston that lina’s lack of civility has no place here. But lina is welcome to apply for a TV announcer’s position at Lewis, where he/she may feel at home.
Rado has a strong case for BW POW (maybe national): 46-16-91, .330; 6 SA, 9 BL, 57.5 points (7.19/set), against two top 15 teams. Too bad Lewis/Loyola went 0-2 combined against Penn State.
UH is a draw. Lewis tied for highest attendance so far this season and Loyola had the biggest turnout by far, both versus UH. Yes, I know only a few matches, but it was nice to see a lot of green this weekend in the stands.
Couldn’t tell you who has played the best so far this season. BYU looks as good as UH right now, and none of the other top teams has played a tough schedule (cupcake city in several cases). We will know more in the next couple of weeks as top teams start to face each other.

I agree with most of the comments regarding thelle and humler, sheward and Galloway. both sheward and Galloway should be starting. with time (not long tme) Galloway is going to be another cowell and this bodes well for the future. however, if humler can get better at hitting he can play because he can also play backrow. thelle must get better otherwise sheward would be the permanent setter. Uh should consider going back to the quick set and sheward has the ideal height and skills.. the team must start to develop another right side hitter for the future, right now, there is no one behind rado.

It’s seven matches in. They are trying to figure themselves out. give them some time. they are looking for the chemstry the had developed the past few season that had a strong core of van Tilburg, Rosenmeier, J. Worsley and Solbrig.
Think Sheward connects with the middles better. His sets are more like the ones Gasman got for Worsley. but remember the Gasman and Worsley also played club together for a couple of years.
It’s actually typical fans response to replacing players. Fans see somebody that excites them and want them to replace the struggling players…never mind that the struggling players were starters due to their body of work(both off season and preseason).
How fast are they to dismiss the production of both Thelle and Humler during their trip to California where they were 7-1 or something like that against good competition.
When Sheward and Galloway faces tough times(I am positive they will..just like everybody who play sport will encounter), will those fans call for Sheward’s and Galloway’s benching??
Reserves coming off the bench in desperate situations always have advantages. There is no pressure on them. They come into the match with the starter struggling anyway. Nothing to lose so they just play like they desperate.
I like Brett and Chaz but I think Jakob and Filip deserve to continue to start. They have proven themselves over a longer period of time.
#54, remember the first 5 games played were against not very good teams, the last two were very good and i the weaknesses of humler and thelle were exposed. he substituted Galloway and sherward and the team did much better. they lost the first game of both matches wtih humler and thelle starting. yes, this team is young and likely the lineup is not set, they still searching for the right pieces. but to find those pieces you have to experiment and change things. you cannot just select a starting 5 and stay with it no matter what the situation. the name of the game is to win, you don’t continue to play people who are not playing well. they have some depth so it makes sense to try others who may be able to do better. they lost the first matches of the first two games with humler and thelle. both sheward and Galloway came in and they won the last 3 matches. the results speak for itself. it could be an aberration that Galloway and sheward did well and could falter later on, but that could be said for both humler and thelle. and those who do well should be rewarded. this is normal in all sports.
#55….I got that but its only the first 5 games. You need to give the players time to gel. To expect everybody to pick up where they left off last season is unreasonable. We lost 2 first team AA and a 4 year senior in Solbrig. We are replace them with a Sophomore setter and a sophomore OH. Solbrig replacement is a true freshman.
I don’ think you say that Galloway and Sheward played well against Lewis and LUC so that mean when they play lower level competitions, they will continue their level of play. It doesn’t work that way in sports.
I’ll say this….if Thelle and Humler continue to struggle…like on the remaining matches on this road trip, then I think that is enough evidence to warrant a change.

Yes, I can kind of agree with the assessment on Thelle and Humler’s struggles, but from the way things are going with this group, it’s prone to likely result in some different changes. Albeit, we saw the sudden glimpse of what this team is capable of, even in matches where struggles become apparent. However, seeing what this team has done early on, we already know where the replacements could come from.
Should Thelle struggle somewhere in the game, Sheward can ride the ship. If any outside, whether it’d be Cowell or Humler struggle, Galloway can provide a response. If Rado were to struggle, Mouchlias can step up to the plate. If Voss or Gasman are struggling, Rosenfeld can provide some help. Each position always has to have a solid back-up, per Charlie Wade’s considerations, and he has that in his disposal. Yes, most of the group he carries is a young core (11 underclassmen on the bench), but they each provide contributions and attributes, depending on what Charlie desperately needs on hand. Mouchlias in particular was clutch against Loyola-Chicago. See, that’s the thing with this group. Even though most of the group is in the beginning stages of understanding the gameplay of college volleyball, it should serve a stepping stone of taking it to the next step, and some have performed well to be able to compete. Sheward did help save the day against Loyola-Chicago as well. You can’t help but ponder over what this team could be capable of in the long run. It helps when you can build your depth and allow them sufficient game play experience. But yeah, this is an interesting group, and the team as a whole should be improving each and every game.
I’m really interested in seeing how it ends.
I like it when Thelle hits the ball. I don’t look at it as a “look at me” moment. I think it takes the other team off guard. I know another setter who often hit the ball outside also.
What people here are talking about reminds me of the season when Jennings Franciskovic struggled and Coach Wade made the switch to Joe Worsley mid-season. Jennings came back the following season and solidified himself as the starter for the entire year and Joe was mostly a serving sub. Through it all, they supported each other, encouraged each other. That’s what teammates do.
Things happen during the course of a season. Players may struggle during games, that’s why they work hard at practice. Yes, this is a new team. New guys replacing All-Americans. This team has talent. They also have heart and character. They don’t panic when they fall behind. I like the way they support each other.
We all may have our opinions of what changes should be made. In the end, decisions come down to Charlie Wade and his coaching staff. They’re there at practice, I’m not. They run the team, I don’t. They know what’s best for the team and I support them 100%. Best of luck to the Rainbow Warriors the rest of the season!
@UHVoice97 well said. Super proud of the boys for pulling out 2 wins against ranked teams this weekend, we have 2 more to go. They are def.. a young team and need to figure out their flow and gel together as a team, its completely new from last year. Love how the back-ups come in and get the job done. Love our depth. Your 59 post is a good reminder for all, as I remember that transformation of Jennings very well. Speaking of Jennings, I would like Jakob to look at tape on Jennings and Joe to see how they mastered their second-contact scoring. Jennings, especially, was very adept at placement. Joe hit with as much force as Jakob, but Joe developed his timing for those attempts. Jakob can continue to be our starter, but he needs to recover quickly because that position will deepen considerably in the fall.
58. Your take. To me, it’s a total “look at me” moment, especially if he has as many attempts as some of the hitters. Setting should be his primary job. Perhaps he’s interested in backing up Rado at OPP? He does have a live arm.
As for me, I track Rado’s service and hitting errors which consistently leads the team. Wondering if he does that in practice. Still early but the All Americans do not seem to have improved over last year.
UH is unanimous #1 and the BigWest has four of the top five.

63. I beg to differ. Gasman has improved. Worsley is Worsley and playing great. Parapunov carrying the load that was a little more equally distributed last season when you also had van Tilburg. And Cowell was out. People tend to look at percentages without having seen what kind of sets the hitters had. Parapunov is getting the trouble sets and sometimes those are trouble for anyone to put down.
