Hawaii volleyball: Brooke Van Sickle all-tournament; update on Masui Allen memorial clinics, tournament
Congrats to Brooke Van Sickle, named to the Wisconsin regional all-tournament team.
She was the only Wahine named. Also on the team: Molly Haggerty (MVP), Sydney Hilley and Dana Rettke, Wisconsin; Jazz Sweet and Lexi Sun, Nebraska; Hollan Hans, Texas A&M.
Van Sickle had a team-high 14 kills and four errors on 27 swings (.370) in UH’s straight-sets loss to Nebraska in the round of 16 on Friday.

The Masui Allen One Love Memorial Volleyball Clinics Saturday at Kaneohe District Park. The tournament is a Castle High gym with banquet to follow
The events will honor Allen, an all-conference player for Hawaii who died July 2 in San Diego after a long battle with cancer. He was 47.
His brother, Rainbow Warrior All-American Allen Allen, is heading the clinics along with other former UH players and friends of Masui Allen.
There are two clinic sessions. One is for U10-U13 (grades fourth-seventh) and rums from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., the other is for U14-U16 (grades eighth-10th) from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m.
Pre-registration is available online for $50. Same-day registration ($60) and check-in starts at 8 a.m.

Wahine basketball players wear retro type jerseys. Would volleyball wear retro jerseys in the future. I liked their name in rainbow colors, during Klum gym days. I remember only Toni’s name in rainbow colors. I can’t remember what year.
Is the team okay? I wasn’t able to see the game but I am sure they did all they could and left it on the floor. There has been silence since the tournament.
2 I’m sure the team is not feeling good after the loss, but they probably all taking finals before taking Christmas break, and all the out of State players will be heading home . Coach Angie and Hanna have a long way to go to make it back to Sweden. Guess we won’t be hearing much about Wahine Volleyball now that the season is over. Beach VB coming up, problem is not to much TV coverage. ( Junk )
Awww. Shucks. Andrew was a good one. Good for Baylor. They will be able to compete against Nebraska, Penn St, etc. While searching for recruiting news, came upon an article that said Nebraska completed their 2021 class with five commits. That’s the way it is in women’s volleyball, thus Hawaii will continue to struggle in recruiting the best….in the U.S. So I think we may see more and more players coming from Europe.
And the more I think about it, coach Rob and her staff accomplished something special by taking the team to the round of “Sweet 16” with players and a team they developed…..without benefit of the level of players the top schools are getting year after year.
Coach Rob and her staff are bringing in the kind of players that can compete in a few years. The one thing for sure is that any player that has bought in to her style has seen a tremendous growth in their skill and performance

The thing is we want players who will buy into the wahine culture. No prima-donnas. If they do, they will improve under the coaches and be part of a family. When will they have another opportunity to play and live in Hawaii for four years? It’s not like they’ll miss out on big money like in other sports.
UH cannot make it to the final 4 even if we mainly go the international route. Hawaii is going to have to find a mix of experienced transfers like we this year in Jolie, Brooke and Bailey and then add some talented US and international players.
Hawaii had a good mix this year. It was unfortunate our terminato(Jolie) got hurt early…thus hindering our team chemistry and development.
Even teams with annual top 5 or 10 recruiting classes does not always make the final four(see Texas and Penn State).
There could be years where UH can fill their roster with US players while some years we may have to rely on international more but I hope Robyn and the coaches don’t get stuck with the going the same route every time.
The men basketball team was kind of in that situation these past couple of years, always seems to be eyeing Australia for talent. Many of the Australian kids did not turn out to be all that good.
Regarding talent: Wisconsin’s 6’1″ OH, Hawaii’s 5’7″ OH, and Texas A&M’s 6’1″ OH make the team. Not all 5 star players made it.
Regarding coaching: it is more permanent. Player’s leave after exhausting their eligibility, while coaches continue teaching year after year.
We should be thankful we have the coaching. Talent will come as news and successes of the coaches spread. In the meantime foreign talent helps.

3. you are welcome to complain to TV about lack of TV coverage. problem is SandBows play a lot of matches at Queens and TV not doing it from there.
Plus men’s volleyball is going to be really good. Come watch them.
