Hawaii men’s basketball: Eran Ganot provides health update
Hawaii men’s basketball head coach Eran Ganot hinted Thursday at an imminent return to the sideline in an update posted on social media.
Ganot, who suddenly stepped away from the program on Nov. 6 — two days before the 2019-20 season opener — for unspecified medical reasons, posted the following on Facebook and Twitter. He did not include a date of his return beyond saying it would be “soon”:
“A special Mahalo for the incredible outpouring of support during this difficult time. It has certainly pushed me through some tough moments. As I said, upon my leave, I have a plan and will be back. The plan has been going well and am looking forward to making my return soon. My family and I are so grateful for the tremendous support we have received from all over, including the great people in Hawaii, UH, our administration, and our medical team. Our program has been built on a rock solid culture which is pushed forward by the amazing people we have on board. Our staff and student-athletes have been tremendous and couldn’t be prouder of them. This is a tough, resilient, connected, and unselfish group that takes great pride in representing this great state and will keep improving! Again, thank you all for reaching out, for sending love and aloha to me and my awesome family. We love you and look forward to seeing you all soon.
Go Bows!!
Eran Ganot”

UH (6-3) has been led by acting head coach Chris Gerlufsen through nine games. The Rainbow Warriors host Samford at 3:30 p.m. Sunday as part of a doubleheader with the Rainbow Wahine basketball team.
Beyond that, the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic begins Dec. 22. There is a final nonconference game against Maine on the other side of the tournament and Big West play begins in the new year.
Think Ganot is back, at least off medical leave and officially part of coaching staff again. He appears to be transitioning back, not fully running practice, that remaining in the hands of Chris Gerlufsen and John Montgomery, but actively participating. We’ll see who is actually calling the shots during the Diamond Head Classic. I am guessing that it will be Gerlufsen and that Ganot will wait until after the DHC to retake the helm.
