In today’s AVCA Top 25, Hawaii stayed at 18.
The top four stay the same:
1. Texas (51 first-place votes), 2. Pitt (11 votes),. 3. Baylor (1 vote), 4. Stanford (1 votes)
As for other Wahine opponents:
Washington up three to 10
San Diego up four to 20
UCLA 48 points (27), Missouri 34 points (29), and yes Illinois (13-12) is still ranked (25).

Remarkable, considering UH OHs are below 6′ (with an OPP at 6’2″.) Beware, CSUN’s record belies their potential; while LBSU will be a battle of the middles.
In a prior thread, lina wondered how accurate Figstats is. In this week’s rankings, very accurate. The top 20 ranks are identical. Some very minor differences in the rest of the top 50:
NCAA: 21 Purdue, 21 W. Ky, 23 UCLA; Figstats: 21 Purdue, 22 UCLA, 23 W. Ky
NCAA: 25 Cincy, 26 SD; Figstats switched these 2
NCAA: 39 Tx St, 40 Cal; Figstats switched these 2
NCAA: 44 No IA, 45 Illinois; Figstats switched these 2
The raw score differences between the teams in each of these examples ranges from .0002 to .0007, so basically a rounding error. For the top 20, the raw score calculations between the two lists are accurate to the third decimal point, and for the majority, accurate to the fourth decimal point. I don’t know which list is actually correct vs. having errors, but I can tell you that the NCAA lists UH’s game vs. Army as a neutral site match, when we know it was a home match for UH.
Below are some of the evaluative tools available to the NCAA tournament committee, and UH’s results:

Overall RPI: 12
Non-conference record: 10-1
Non-conference RPI: 5
Conference record: 12-2
Conference RPI: 9
Road record: 7-2
Record in last 10 matches: 9-1
Record against teams ranked 1-50 by RPI: 7-2

Significant wins and losses: wins vs. UW, Missouri, UCLA, UCSBx2, SD, Poly; loss vs. UCI
Other circumstances that could affect results (e.g., injuries): Jolie, BVS injuries re: UCI loss
Assuming UH wins both matches this week, they will host a subregional and be seeded in the low to mid-teens. One loss, even to LBSU, puts this at risk because of the UCI loss. Win out and I think the committee downplays the UCI loss because of injuries to two starters.
The AVCA poll is irrelevant for tournament seeding and selection, and you have to shake your head when a 13-12 Illinois team is still ranked 25th. UH remains 18th for those who care.

Have always said the poll is irrelevant. just the opinions of 60 coaches and the points fall where they fall.
I updated the poll in main box before you posted. only mention Illinois because people keep questioning how they are still ranked.

As for the injury to Rasmussen, when someone asked a while ago, she’s been out for so long and Hawaii has won without her, that it shouldn’t play into an NCAA decision. And, as you mention, the loss to UCI could be explained by loss of Rasmussen and Van Sickle.
Illinois is 13-12 and still in the Top 25. Does the Illinois coach have embarrassing photos of the AVCA coaches that vote in the poll? How can this continue to be?
What is the status of Rasmussen? Hawaii has won without her, but is a stronger team with her! Energy on the floor is better with her and her skill set obviously helps! Just curious if we can expect her back anytime soon, or is she out for the season already?

By way of background, I live in Wisconsin and they are “my team,” but I have kids who went to UH and I come to this page because this group knows volleyball. I love the UH volleyball history, tradition and fan base (and their future looks really good right now too).
Illinois has played 14 matches against teams in the top 25 today and more than 14 if you look at ranking on the match day.
For one 3-match stretch in October, they played at Wisconsin, at Minnesota and at Penn State. That was followed by home matches against Ohio State and Michigan.
I know their RPI is almost double the AVCA poll number, but I can only say that they’ve got game when I use the eyeball test and I know that every team in the Big Ten expects a fight in every match.
ps—when I say that “they” are my team, I meant that Wisconsin is “my team.” I’ve just come to respect Illinois.
Its so sad that some coaches voting on the AVCA polls don’t even give UH any votes. Worst yet the Oregon coach who is having a bad season gives us votes at the bottom of the ranking. I would guess he is mad at UH for taking some of his transfers. I’m happy at the transfer those women are great for the program.
6 I’m thinking that she is done for the season. This is only my opinion, and i could be wrong.
Only she and the coaching staff knows,but no body talking. The team got along with out her, but i’m sure if she was on the side lines it would help the teams morale. She’s always there at home games anyway.
Looks like The Warriors lost the recruiting battle to LBSU AGAIN in landing that big German opposite. Maybe Klistan will change his mind and come to UH instead since he will have major competition at opposite at LBSU.
Illinois is one of my favorite teams to watch. With an RPI of 45, Illinois should get into the tournament. They are a good team with outside hitters Jacqueline Quade and Megan Cooney, plus middle blocker Ashlyn Fleming. Quade especially if fun to watch. In looking at their stats, I would say they just need to improve some on their blocking, otherwise, they could be in the top tier of the Big 10.
Who knows JR will surprise us this week or during t hi e post season!!!!!

They belong on the coaches Top 25 the way I belong among the finalists of The Handsomest Man in America competition.
Klistan Lawrence will get competition at UH too. I don’t think you can discout Dimi Mouchlias as a potential All American type after Rado graduates. Klistan gets a lot of hype due to him being a America player but Mouchlias could be just as good.
12. Agree. Illinois is a good team just a few steps away from being very good. They have lost some tough matches as well against some great teams. The selection for the post season has very nearly gotten it right every time. So, be interesting to see how things shape up.
14–I’m not saying that Illinois will win the NCAA-just that a #25 ranking might not be too wrong. They have 8 losses to teams in the AVCA top 10. I suspect that they will win 3 or 4 of their final matches for a 17-12 or 16-13 record. If they make the tournament, they could easily surprise a higher seed (or two).
17. I note that accurately using nondefinitive language (e.g. *if* they make the tourney) is another sign that the team is unworthy of being in the Top 25.

Cheeseball et al. I have great respect for Illinois’ volleyball program, which was the beast of the Big10 before Penn St.’s run (UH beat Illinois in the ’87 and ’88 final fours). However, what I’ve learned most brutally as a UH fan is that you cannot just play a tough schedule (non-conference in UH’s case), you have to win. Illinois is 3-7 against RPI top 50 competition (who are all ranked in the AVCA except UCF and Ohio St.). Illinois hasn’t beaten a lot of great teams and hasn’t lost to a lot of poor/mediocre teams. Illinois is just average. I could agree with a top 35 ranking, but at 13-12 and still ranked 25 is just Big 10 bias–“the conference is great so we will give the team a break”.
Compare to AVCA #26 USC, which is 6-11 versus RPI top 50 and hasn’t lost to anyone below that. This 15-11 team has the #1 SOS and the #3 non-conference SOS. Illinois is #9 and #39, respectively (this shows that Illinois is trading on the BIg10s competitiveness rather than going after tougher non-conference competition). Yet USC doesn’t pass the eye test like Illinois does.
Interestingly, UH knows it is in a weak conference and does what it can to schedule a tough non-conference schedule. UH has the #43 SOS, but its non-conference SOS is #13 and its non-conf RPI is 5th best in the nation.
Anyway, good to know a volleyball fan from America’s Dairyland is a reader and now contributor to this blog. I disagree with your view on Illinois’ ranking but I agree they could surprise some teams come tourney time.
Note to Cindy: On another blog, I read your response to “wahinefan”, who appears to have an axe to grind with you. I wanted you to know that I was impressed with your fact-based, tactful and non-confrontational response, which does you credit.

Five out of eight Bigwest opponents have done very well against wahine so far giving two loses, and taking to three times to fifth game. Revived LongBeach try to joining to them continuing with their A+ form and finishing the season at high note…It is fair game to give votes at high ranking to personal favorites and then ignore or give votes at very low ranking to a hated team. Fortunately, majority of AVCA coaches vote unbiased, only based on recent performance and still maintain some integrity in AVCA poll. Hanging at top-20 in AVCA poll and RPI-12 is a big accomplishment for wahine, specially, for FIVE SENIORS. Big Mahalo.
The pollsters seem to equate height with strength, but bigger players do not automatically guarantee wins.
As swords are often-times double-edged, tall players are generally not as quick. Consequently, speed is used to combat height.
Cal Poly is a good example, but Hawaii is an even better example.
20. Agree with you. It’s nice that you schedule tough and play in a tough league but at some point what matters is your W-L record. They are barely above .500 and could very well end up outside the tournament a la UCLA last season.
