FINAL: Hawaii 83, Portland State 75. UH improves to 3-1. Eddie Stansberry a career-high 28 points. Zigmars Raimo 10 pts, 14 reb, 7 ast.

9:12: Justin Webster to the line to put this thing away, UH up seven with 13.4 seconds left.

9:07: UH not exactly swinging a knockout blow here. PSU hanging within 80-73 with 1:07 left.

8:59: If you’re wondering, last 30-point game by a UH player was by Noah Allen at Cal Poly in 2017. Stansberry’s at 28.

8:58: Call stands. Stansberry to the line, and he completes the three-point play. Margin is nine with 5 minutes left.

8:56: New career-high 27-points for Stansberry on a baseline jumper, plus the foul. But officials looking at it on the monitors, Boo Boo Woods claiming he got … yeah, a boo boo.

8:52: Raimo with the double-double … he’s got a shot at the fourth triple-double in UH history. He’s got a career-best seven assists with 6:30 to play.

8:48: Raimo to the line with a chance at his first double-double of the season if he sinks both (8 pts, 10 reb).

8:46: Raimo misses the front end of a 1-and-1 but gets his own miss on a bounce and feeds Samuta Avea for a 3 to push the lead back to seven with under 9 minutes left.

8:43: There’s the first 3-point miss by Stansberry. Tried a step-back from the top of the arc, went off back iron.

8:41: I should add to the earlier stat on 3-point shooting that Matt Lojeski also had a 7-for-7 3-pointer game, against Boise State in 2007.

8:38: Raimo redeems himself by taking a charge on Woods.

8:37: After review, Zigmars Raimo is called for swinging a ‘bow toward the Vikings. They get two FTs (they make one), and the ball back. Seven-point game with 11:41 left.

8:30: Stansberry runs a Showtime-style fast break and drops off a no-look (or half-look) bounce pass for Buggs for a layup and a nine-point lead with 12 minutes left.

8:28: Raimo is uncovered on a screen he drives for a two-handed flush. 61-54 UH within 12:42 left.

8:25: Stansberry from the left corner and he’s 6-for-6 on 3s. Wowza. Record for 3s without a miss belongs to Brandon Jawato (7-for-7).

8:20: Stansberry misses a 3 … BUT he’s fouled on the play so his long-ball shooting percentage (1.000) remains intact. UH 48-44 with 15:31 to play. … Stansberry sinks all 3 at the line and he’s got his third straight 20-point game.

8:13: Eddie Stansberry goes to 5-for-5 on 3s for UH’s first points of the second half.

8:09: Second half underway

HALF: Hawaii 40, Portland State 38

7:54: Drew Buggs comes back in for the final possession of the half and sinks a step-back jumper to reclaim the lead.

7:50: Rashaad Goolsby with a steal and power finish past Kameron Ng … looks like an and-1 but it’s called on the floor. Probably not a good call there. Anyway, he makes both and UH turns it over. Hurting without Buggs in there.

7:48: Buggs just picked up his second foul with 2:13 left in the half. He’s coming out. Vikings within 38-34.

7:43: First career points for Justin Webster as the Vikings bench screams in his ear at the left corner. It’s all net. Wouldn’t have faulted him for turning around and barking at the bench but he coolly just trots back upcourt. 36-27 UH.

7:42: Boo Boo Woods finally gets on the board on a 3-pointer after a Vikings rebound of an and-1 free throw miss. Margin narrowed to four on the five-point extended possession.

7:39: Stansberry 4-for-4 on 3s.

7:37: PSU’s two main scorers, Woods and Matt Hauser, have yet to score. They are a combined 0-9 from the field. 26-19 ‘Bows, 7 min 1H.

7:32: It’s been pointed out that the Vikings bench by the left corner is being very, very disruptive, yelling at and almost touching UH players with the ball in that spot.

7:31: Nice behind the back pass from Woods to Sal Nuhu for a dunk. Vikings hanging around, 22-19 UH.

7:25: Eddie Stansberry sinking every 3 he puts up certainly makes up for a lot of ills … he’s 3-for-3 for nine points in eight minutes.

7:22: PSU’s top scorer, “Boo Boo” Woods, is committing some boo boos. He’s 0-4 to start the game. Meanwhile, Justin Webster just checked in at point guard, his first action of his UH career. The Vikings have taken advantage with a couple of turnovers on the unsure ‘Bows and get a dunk to tie it at 13. Timeout UH.

7:20: This could be the kind of game where Bernardo da Silva could really put up some numbers. Up-and-down pace, no real physical specimens in the post for PSU. 10-9 UH, 14 min 1H.

7:16: Carper goes backdoor on a designed play and Raimo finds him for a two-handed flush. ‘Bows lead 9-4 at the first media timeout.

7:10: Mixed results on UH’s first two possessions. UH breaks the press and gets an offensive board/putback by Dawson Carper on the first and turns it over on a Zigmars Raimo travel on the second. … Drew Buggs just turned it over along the PSU baseline on the third.

7:07 p.m.: Roderick Bobbitt is introduced as the honorary captain in the team huddle pregame and receives a nice round of applause.

The Rainbow Warriors take on Portland State for the first time since the 1970s tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Vikings (1-1) of the Big Sky press relentlessly and look to shoot within the first five seconds of the shot clock. Holland “Boo Boo” Woods, a 6-1 junior point guard, is averaging 19.5 points and 4.0 assists through a win over non-Division I Puget Sound and, maybe more tellingly, a close loss at Indiana, 85-74. His backcourt mate Matt Houser has put in 17.0 points.

Will UH senior guard Eddie Stansberry keep up his hot shooting of the last two games? Stansberry has averaged 19 points in the second halves of the last two games, as he’s up to 17.3 ppg on the season.

Maybe more importantly, how will UH fare against PSU’s constant fullcourt press? PSU forced 18.1 turnovers per game in the first year of the Barret Peery era (2017-18) and followed that up by forcing 14.9 in Year 2.

The Rainbows have a tight turnaround to get up to Illinois of the Big Ten after tonight. UH and UI play on Monday in Champaign.

Roderick Bobbitt, the point guard of the 2015-16 NCAA Tournament team, is tonight’s honorary game captain. Bobbitt played for Peery at Indian Hills Junior College.

That Brandon Jawato record if I remember correctly all came in the 1st half. It was either 7/7 in the 1st half or 6/6 in the first half with one more coming in the 2nd half.

  2. Brian McInnis November 15, 2019 10:16 pm

You are correct, he was 7-7 in the first half and didn’t attempt a 3 in the second.

Great team win for the Warriors. Will need to find a reliable sub for Buggs but he has been an excellent point guard so far. UH appears to have a strong bench. Can anyone explain the white arm sleeves, and some leg sleeves, that the players are wearing? Does it serve some physical/medical purpose or is it to cover up something? Mahalo.

  4. Brian McInnis November 16, 2019 7:43 am

As far as I know none of them are to cover up anything. I think most are for physical preference, to stay warm, etc.

Brian, Thank you for your reply. Could it also be for wiping off sweat? But some have it on their leg (just one leg). Not all players use the sleeve. Just curious whether if its just a fashion item or serves some useful purpose, new technology. Don’t think players of the 70s and 80s used it.

    @ CO

It’s just a fashion preference. The sleeves for some of them sure didn’t do anything to help break PSU’s press Friday night.
