Am a little surprised about the RPI given who Hawaii played this past week (UC Davis and UC Riverside).

My breaking news story this morning:
The Hawaii volleyball team remained at 11 in today’s Ratings Percentage Index, the computer-generated system used by the NCAA to rate strength of schedule.
The RPI is a major factor in how the NCAA seeds the 64-team postseason tournament with teams rated 1 through 16 hosting the first and second rounds. Hawaii has not hosted a subregional since 2013.
The Rainbow Wahine (22-3, 12-2 Big West) ran their winning streak to nine with Sunday’s sweep at UC Riverside. Hawaii has a bye this week.
In today’s RPI, Baylor (20-1) remained at 1. The Bears handed the Wahine their first loss of the season on Sept. 22.
Hawaii closes out the regular season at the Stan Sheriff Center with matches against Cal State Northridge (12-13, 7-6) on Nov. 21 and Long Beach State (10-15, 7-6) on Nov. 22. Should the Wahine win out, they would do no worse than a tie for the league title and would be awarded the automatic berth into the NCAA tournament by virtue of holding the tiebreaker over both Cal Poly (17-7, 10-2) and UC Santa Barbara (19-4, 9-3).

Hawaii is 7-2 against Top 50. They beat Washington, UCLA, Missouri, San Diego, Cal Poly, and UCSB (2x).
Good to see all three BigWest Table leaders are well placed in RPI (11, 28 & 33) for post season. (Well deserved & rightfully earned without any bias!) … Expect wahine would avoid over practicing and take precautions to be injuries-free and healthy in coming five weeks. Coaching staff hopefully, keep attention to the subject on, ‘Preventing volleyball injuries’ as wahine have at least, two injury prone key players heading for post-season… Brief article about it:

Do you forsee any possibility that UH would fall more than 5 spots after the bye and the final two games?
For me, I am hoping the staff works with the team on bettering their receive platform, serving much tougher with more pace, and practicing/developing more situational plays to score when the player match up don’t favor us (too much high and outside bail outs). They will need it in post season if we are to get pass the 1st two rounds. While hoping for the return of Jolie, they should train as if Jolie will not be back. Let’s go bows!
1. Indeed, coach, was expecting the Wahine to drop a few points in the RPI, since Cindy mentioned the pre-adjusted number had them at 13. These next 2 weeks are going to be wrought with anticipation as the possibility of hosting starts looming on the horizon.

Just wondering, but do any of the athletes try acupuncture for their injuries? One of my friends broke her leg and was doing acupuncture for her breast cancer treatments. Since the acupuncturist was already working with her he told her he would also work on her broken leg. When she went back to the leg doctor, he told her that was the most bone growth he had seen on anyone taking chemo treatments. I wound think its worth a try. Go bows.

we should be cautious, remember we beat Washington, UCLA and san diego with JR was the lineup. she is not there anymore, so in reality this team is a lesser team without JR. glad the coaches went back and used a full-time libero/defensive alignment. also glad the coaches are using helvig, ross and other hitters, except for Norene, for only 3 rotations (front) and subbing them out and using the 3 person receiving alignment of brooke, rika/kyra and setters. this really stabilized the passing where the setters can now give the hitters better sets. must give credit to the coaches they are thinking and working. If JR can come back and play in the nccas, Hawaii should at least get pass the first two rounds, otherwise, it could be one and done.

Last week, Creighton of the Big East was ranked 10th, in spite its rpi 19. This week, Creighton’s SOS jumped to rpi 14, but it dropped out of the Volleyball Committee’s potential Top 10 seeds after a lost/win weekend.
In this second Top 10 release, the so-called Power 5 conferences monopolize the list. Like the first release, the Top 10 seeds more or less follows the NCAA RPI ranking. From rpi 9 to rip 13, the Power 5 leagues easily win out when it comes to the select criteria the Volleyball Committee is looking for in seeding (* = seeded):

* Florida (rpi 11)
Colorado St [Mountain West] (rpi 12)
* Washington (rpi 13)
Although the Committee can easily release its potential Top 16 seeds for the Tournament, it chooses not to. So we must all wait till Selection Sunday on December 1, but traditionally the top RPI teams will host the subregional (First and Second Rounds) but almost every year controversy erupts when the 14th or 15th or 16th RPI team is bypassed as a subregional host school by the Volleyball Committee.

Long post warning: skip if you don’t want to read all this…
Just some comments and corrections:
Cindy: in the event UH wins out, the only team would could possibly tie Na Wahine is Poly. UCSB is irrelevant with its 3 losses. UH would win the auto bid by virtue of holding the tiebreaker over Poly, not Poly and UCSB.
3. In addition to the #5 non-conference RPI in the country, the success of both Poly and UCSB is a big reason why UH has a high RPI and will likely host if the team wins out. The better the Big West, the better UH’s chances of hosting a sub-regional.
8. You would need a computer to run a bunch of scenarios to answer this accurately, but it is possible. First, UH is playing LBSU (RPI 162) and CSUN (RPI 174), who have a combined 22-28 record. This will depress UH’s SOS component of the RPI (worth 50%). Second, if UH loses to both, then this will depress UH’s record (worth 25% of the RPI). Third, if UCLA (RPI 23) and Missouri (RPI 19) both tank the rest of the season, both could fall out of the RPI top 25, which would eliminate two of UH’s 10 total bonus points, and that will further depress UH’s adjusted RPI score, and potentially jeopardize a top 16 RPI. IMO, if UH loses either of its final two matches, it will not host, even if it remained a top 16 RPI team. Optics are really bad if UH has 2 losses to sub-100 RPI teams (already have one against 265 Irvine).
10. Yes, since 2012 at least one team outside the top 16 RPI has been seeded. In four of those years. Two non-top 16 RPI teams were seeded. Some data on the selection adjusted RPI ranks and where those teams were seeded (source is Wikipedia):

2017: 17 UCLA seeded 15
2016: 18 Kansas St. seeded 14; FAVORITISM (?) 26 Penn State seeded 16

For anyone who thinks UH always gets screwed, 2013 is a counter data point. Maybe 2012 was a screw, but I haven’t perused the data. By the way, 2010 was the last time all 16 top RPI teams were seeded, including UH (RPI 11, seeded 15, lost to unseeded Washington in the second round 3-0; Washington then beat Nebraska, seeded 2, in the next round).
13. Your data is incorrect and your post suffers from a little confirmation bias. UH with Jolie beat Washington and San Diego. Without Jolie, the team beat UCLA, Missouri, UCSBx2 and Poly. While the team would be better off with Jolie, it has done well to continue beating top teams without her (coaching matters). If Jolie was in the lineup for Baylor, Poly and Irvine, I think UH still loses to Baylor and maybe loses to Poly (Brooke was not active that match on the mainland), but definitely beats Irvine without Brooke. The team’s problems flared up when Brooke went down with an injury. It’s not just about Jolie.
Other: IMHO, UH’s best win came against AVCA Top 25 Missouri on a neutral court without Jolie. I think that match really helps get UH seeded even if its RPI falls to 16 or 17. Second best was beating UCSB 3-0 on the mainland (no Brooke or Jolie) tied with beating Washington 3-1 at home.
#13, Missouri win at the time was good, but now Missouri is not in the top 25. without JR I am doubtful that we can beat Washington again, no matter where. Hawaii had difficulty beating ucsb and cal poly both unranked teams. I am an Hawaii supporter but just being realistic. sure I would like for them to go to the final four and take it all but that is wishful thinking. the team as is, is good but not great. they are ranked 18 this week but I feel that is too generous, they should be in the mid 20s. yes, brooke is vital to winning but JR makes the team an ncca contender; without her and even if brooke is healthy it is not a contender, just a pretender. no knock on brooke, she has been a valuable and vital player and has tried her best and she is appreciated for her contribution, but you have to see things objectively,

Since recruiting is ongoing this is my take. Next year all recruits must be able to pass nails. Needs:
2 Setters who can fast set, back-set, dig, serve, and block
1 OH who can side out against a double block (hit smart) and block
1 OH/libero who can dig, and hit.
Everyone needs to hone their serve into a weapon. The name of the game is “Serve and Pass”.

11. Thanks for sharing your friend’s experience with acupuncture.
*Strictly for her sake,* I hope Jolie
(and Brooke?) has considered using “alternative” healing procedures (or already using “alternative” options?) so she can once and for all heal her ankle in a string way, and, hopefully, avoid reinjury. My Traditional Chinese Medicine MD and her husband healed their (freak) back-to-back fractures in their feet in what seemed like a mere weeks from the time they had their accidents using acupuncture and herbs. It was really quite unbelievable to see how fast they healed, as they were older adults, but came out of their accidents as good as new. Another doctor of mine works with professional athletes and performers, besides “regular” people, to heal their injuries very quickly and to keep them injury free and strong– all naturally, no drugs.

16. Thank you for your comments. Missouri is not AVCA Top 25, but it is RPI top 20 (RPI had not been released when UH played Missouri). And that is what matters to the committee. IMO, it is UH’s best win from the committee’s perspective, and came without Jolie on a neutral court.
Seeing things objectively means not cherry-picking data (i.e., confirmation bias) that suits your argument while neglecting other data that doesn’t support your argument. Who knows who wins in a rematch between UH and UW without Jolie? You assume they won’t, but there is no basis for that view other than a lack of confidence about UH and the injury to Jolie (remember all those other great wins without Jolie?). I wonder how many fans picked a Jolie-less UH to sweep UCLA… Similarly, there is no basis for the view that UH is over-. UH would be ranked higher if Brooke didn’t go down and Irvine reverse-swept UH.
BTW, you did see my sentence where I said UH would be better off with Jolie? My view is that Jolie is not a cure-all, not the difference between a Final Four and an early exit. With Jolie, UH had difficulty beating St. John’s and San Diego. San Diego is about as good as Poly and UCSB, regardless of ranking. You don’t give UCSB and Poly enough credit. Those are two very strong teams. In an improved Big West, no one should be surprised that UH will struggle with other top teams. But those struggles don’t take away from how good this team is.
You also miss the point about Brooke. It is not whether Brooke is better than Jolie. The point is that a lot of the team’s worst struggles, including the loss to Irvine, involved injuries to two starters.
And I am not sure what we all need to be cautious about. I have not seen a lot of talk anywhere about this team being a Final Four team. Realistically, probably 6 to 8 teams are serious championship contenders this year. UH is not in that group, even with Jolie. I think most fans would be happy for a subregional, and maybe make it to the Regional final depending on the bracket (that would exceed my expectations). Yes, Jolie gives UH a better chance at winning, but I think her impact is not as great as you make it out to be. Maybe from good to good+, but to be truly great, the passing needs to improve (yes, blunite!), the freshmen have to be more consistent, and we need reliable OH2 terminator. We can talk about great next year.

I kinda forgot how Brooke and Jolie played @ the Stan together. Sure I can watch videos, but it doesn’t compare. I kinda saw them as a pair. I’m so glad about our transfers. I’m sure Oregon wishes they had them back. I was hoping we’d have some spring matches, but no setter. If we don’t get another setter, who would be the setter in training.
According to facts of this blog, RPI is just a guideline for seeding for top 16 and ‘perception of team’ plays big role in seeding. IMO, even Jolie is not fully ready yet, it is a good move to announce ahead of time Jolie’s availability in remaining two regular season matches for the sake of good PUBLICITY, RECOGNITION and SEEDING as Jolie was the AVCA National player. Of course, current crew should continue to finish up the season, particularly, taking Long Beach very seriously. Jolie should play only 1 or 2 rotations in next two matches but her main role is getting healthy/ ready for play-off. There is more to gain by announcing her recovery and availability for the rest of the season if she is REALLY PLANS to be in post-season.
This post is a little late, but thought I would add it with all this discussion about Brooke. I was at Riverside and I think she’s the unsung hero of that match. She was all over the backcourt, and is a really solidifying and steadying presence. When both she and Rika got going, it was game over for UCR.
Many teams have had struggles with injuries. One player does not a team make. However, the good teams are the ones where they have depth and players that have stepped up; Hellvig case in point. The same with Cal Poly; Dvoracek stepped up when Torrey went down. On the other hand, a team depending too much on the success of one player can crash and burn as UCSB did against Cal Poly. No one there to step up for Ruddins.
23. Out of curiosity, since I haven’t done the research, have the Oregon girls played in Oregon as they are playing now? IMHO, the girls have done better now because of their attitudes, their gelling with each other and the coaching staff. I don’t think they had that there.

Curious as to why Riley Wagoner hasn’t played as much as she did in the beginning of the season. I know for some reason or another her passing/serving was faltering but I didn’t think it was that bad.
25. Agreed. It has been mentioned several times in these blogs and by Cindy that the one thing they don’t measure other than the usual digs, blocks, kills, etc. is the person’s volleyball IQ. Her court awareness allows her to be where the ball is going to be along with her kills need to go. She really is one of the unsung heroines of the team along with Rika.
When you reflect back on what this coaching staff and team have accomplished this year, its nothing short of, well, awesome. And so thankful to have someone like Angelica on the staff, still remember how humble she always was as a player She never was about any personal recognition or awards, was always about the team. Who will forget this season? We are so lucky to have such talented athletes on this nationally ranked team. No matter how the postseason goes, fans will always support and love this team.
25. Never dawned on me that “alternative” healing protocols could be a liability. Good point, but, too bad, if that is the case. Healing goes so much more quickly and solidly with acupuncture, cupping, herbs.
With or without Jolie, the team will just have to make do with those who are available. Hellvig continues to get better with each match, and I’m very impressed with what Igiede has accomplished thus far. For someone who was supposedly raw coming in, she sure is a quick learner!
No doubt Jolie brings a lot to the team and was huge in the early victories, but I think the coaching staff knew what they were getting when they took her. She’s been injured multiple times in the past and the possibility of her getting injured again was very real.
Wagoner is a freshman and will surely improve. She’s not a terminator yet, but her steadiness as a passer earlier in the season was what allowed UH to run the libero-less system. She has faltered with ball control as of late, but she has proven that she is a good passer and should be back to her normal self in no time. I do hope she improves her attacking. I’m not expecting her to match up to Jolie or Hanna, but if she can be a Susie Boogaard-type who can tirelessly take numerous swings without committing a ton of errors, she’d be a big help.
This team would not have been the same without Okino. She stabilized the back row earlier this year despite limited court time, and after a shaky patch in the middle of the season, she has been incredible defensively in the recent matches.
McKenna Ross is the unsung hero. Many people have criticized her for not hitting for a better percentage, but those people may have forgotten that Ross came to UH as a walk-on to train as a back row specialist. The fact that both Shoji and Ah Mow have trusted her abilities as an attacker enough to go to her in crucial situations speaks volumes about her. I just feel like she’s getting too much criticism when she’s had some good moments all four years of her career.
I’m surprised Sibley hasn’t played more. As a scholarship senior, I feel like she should’ve been given more opportunities against the bottom half of the conference. Same with Gong. She’s played all of two sets (!) after playing in several big matches last year and being very steady.
Last year, for the first time since the rally point scoring era began in 2001, Hawaii had no All-American — not even on the list of 85 (yes, 85!) AA Honorable Mentions.
This year the AA Honorable Mentions will be more exclusive: 42 (equal to the total amount of athletes selected on the three teams of All-Americans). Of these 42 selections, “athletes named Player of the Year from their conference AND AVCA All-Region, will automatically be named AVCA All-America Honorable Mention.”
Right now it appears we have two legit AA candidates (Hellvig and Iosia) and if our middles were given more opportunity to better the ball, I would certainly add Igiede to this list.

Beginning of the year I got the impression that some of the players goal or feeling was to win it all, Not to just win the conference or just make it to the NCAA tournament. I think the Wahine before Jolie’s injury had the potential to on any given day beat any other team. Now without Jolie, the current Wahine team has the potential on a given day to beat any other team. Just depends on any given match, how much Dr. Jekyll and how much Mr. Hdye shows up ( i.e. less margin of error).
32. Yes the National Semifinals and National Championship will be held in Pittsburgh but the official host school is Duquesne University Dukes, a member of the A-10 (Atlantic 10). Unlike the subregional and regional sites, the championship site is predetermined couple or several years in advance.

Just read on Volleytalk about downgrading a team because of a injured player. Will the NCAA not let UH host, I didn’t know that was even a option. I have a funny feeling after reading this.
#44…..there is no Jr transfers available at this time. If you talking JC, I would pass. JC transfers are kind of a waste because only here for a short time then finished. Some might take long to get used to the speed of the D1 game and never get to play much.
If you are talking transfers ala JR, BVS, etc….then you gonna have to wait till season is over.
We are losing Ross and Sibley after this season and JR and BVS the following season, we need another big gun to keep this momentum going.
Would like to see Robyn consider moving Amber Igiede to be an OH next year as an alternative should someone on the outside falter. Tiffany is a capable replacement as a MB and has much PT in that position.
Amber is quick, a strong hitter with a quick arm swing and a good blocker, ala Emily Hartong and Anne Mitchem who made the transition successfully.
Plus, Amber knows how to celebrate .
