Hawaii basketball set for exhibition against Chaminade
The men’s basketball team will offer a preview when it plays host to Chaminade in an exhibition Wednesday night in the Stan Sheriff Center.
This has been a difficult preseason for the Rainbow Warriors. Because of a late eligibility ruling from the NCAA, guard Junior Madut won’t join the ‘Bows until January. Washington State transfer Ahmed Ali withdrew from school because of a medical condition. Five players have missed practices because of injuries, including 7-foot post Owen Hulland, who is out indefinitely. Two weeks ago, point guard Drew Buggs‘ mother died in California.
Buggs returned to Hawaii this week, and participated in Monday night’s practice.
“We’re here to support him,” said head coach Eran Ganot, who traveled to California last week to offer condolences to Buggs’ family. “It’s an incredibly difficult situation. We love him. We love his family. We support his family and Drew during this time.”
Several newcomers have had extended reps because of the shortage of practice players. Justin Webster, Jessiya Villa and Kameron Ng have taken turns at point guard. Bernardo da Silva, who is 6-9 with a 7-2 wingspan, has proven to be a confident shooter and deft ball-handler.
“He’s not shy,” Ganot said of da Silva. “He’ll let it fly. He’ll be aggressive, which is a good thing. … He’s underrated in the post. When he gets his shot, it’s hard to block because of how high his release is.”

i missed jeff portnoy day. “hoops talk” with jeff portnoy and jackson wheeler made me laugh. i like artie wilson’s “on point”, too, but i enjoyed portnoy and wheeler’s blunt assessments of the player personnel. i see wilson a lot around kahala mall. i wanted to stop him once and say that his interview with willie mays was the most amazing moment on local sports radio ever. but he gave me the impression that negrus webster chan was going to carry the team to the final four.

Calling the SA a bunch of tight ba$tards apparently gets you censored.
I think he was dropped because he and Jackson have been pretty vocal about criticisms about the program. UH can’t control who is on radio shows at ESPN1420 but they can control who does the radio broadcasts for UH games.
#6 – no one at UH is foolish enough to have been involved in Portnoy’s ouster.
#7 – I take that back. If someone was involved they thought they were smart by waiting until Portnoy was off the board. But he still has long arms and friends in high places.
