Watched the Pepperdine – San Diego match. Pepperdine looked a lot better than their 11-9 record. Scott Wong has a real Hawaii-flavor with Lindsey Berg and Tarra Hittle on his staff, plus two players from Punahou. Congrats to them for beating the Toreros.
1. thanks. got the info after getting to Fullerton.
posted on previous thread
2. Had mentioned that earlier about Berg and Hittle. Also, Blossom Sato, Jolie Rasmussen’s cousin, is on staff while going to grad school. Sato had committed to play beach for the SandBows and she was excited about that when I spoke to her in May, think she was going to room with Rasmussen.
Then Pepperdine hired her. Good deal for her.
2. From having watched the San Diego Pepperdine matchup, it was obvious San Diego didn’t show up and play to their full potential. Make no mistake and all credit due to Wong and the Waves, but had SD played like how they did on the road to BYU it would’ve been a different outcome. Their defense was stellar in that game. Just my opinion from having seen both games.
Hmmm, this is now the 2nd time the Wahine didn’t get their allotted time at the gym to practice I remember RAM and Cindy mentioned about the mix up at LBSU as well. Are these times for practice upheld in a manner thru NCAA and BigWest? If so, are there ways Hawaii can voice these out so it doesn’t happen in the future?
I get that the basketball team had priority but clearly the gym was “overbooked” with overlapping schedules.
Re Blossom Sato. Good reading. Didn’t know who she was. Thanks for insight that she and Jolie were cousins.
ha! called it… i knew the long horns could kick Baylors okole!!
Any reason why BVS isn’t playing? Just not needed today?
RPI just took another hit: UW lost to Utah, 3-1…
It seems that the wahine’s warm up should have been the priority as they are in season play. Had they lost the first set…it could have been to warm up errors. If anything, they could have delayed the start of the game
But UCLA just beat No. 2 Stanford in straight sets a few minutes ago, so rpi won’t be negatively impacted. Maybe even positive effect.
RPI just jumped with UCLA upsetting #2 Stanford 3-0. 25-22, 25-22, 25-18
Good win for UCLA…but Stanford right now playing without Plummer…
Do y’all not understand how RPI works?
It’s a wash. Washington lost, UCLA won. The effect RPI would have on it would have been the same if it was reversed. This helps us during seeding time as UCLA looks to be a tournament team now though.
Now had UCLA and Washington both won this would have been good for our RPI
RPI aside, Wahine taking down Fullerton in straight sets warms my heart. Remember their coach said she couldn’t wait to get the Wahine on their home court. ..as if they were going to blow out the Wahine. Coach Rob made her own statement by playing basically the same lineup without Brooke in the sweep.
USC up 2-0 on Cal…
With the bias towards Stanford, maybe they fall one place in the rankings. Poor passing aside, now they are missing Plummer, no matter.
If teams are targeting MR on serve, her passing will determine the Wahine fate.
14. Only partly true. As concerns the unadjusted RPI calculation (.25*team’s record = .5*opponents’ record + .25*opponents’ SOS), you are correct, it is a wash. However, the NCAA adjusts this calculation for wins against top 25 (double bonus) and top 25-50 (single bonus) RPI teams (same for losing to the worst RPI teams). At the moment, UW is firmly in the top 10 of the unadjusted RPI rankings while UCLA is 29th. The UCLA win is far more important to UH’s RPI than a UW win because UCLA may raise its RPI rank to top 25 with the win over Stanford (earning a double bonus for its own RPI), which would earn UH a double bonus rather than the current single bonus. As concerns this adjusted RPI (post-bonus) calculation, the best scenario for UH would have been for both UW and UCLA to win. If only one were to win, UH would prefer UCLA win rather than UW.
18. This data includes the UW loss but not the UCLA win. We will see with the next update how things shake out. Also, this analysis assume ceteris paribus.
USC beats Cal 3-1…not a good weekend for northern Cal…
Haha…Ashley Preston was a wee bit overconfident that her team could knock the #21 team in the country despite being 0-40 something against them. Some things are better left unsaid.
Would be better to start winning big matches and getting more than 186 people in the stands before displaying such bravado.
9,11,12,14,18,19. The unofficial RPI calculations were just updated to reflect UCLA’s win. In the unadjusted RPI rankings, UCLA jumped from 29 to 22 by virtue of its win over Stanford, earning UH a double bonus. When factoring in this bonus, UH’s adjusted RPI rank rose from 16 to 13.
Expect UH’s RPI rank to fall after tomorrow’s match with 4-15 UCI, regardless of the result.
Note that because of matches played since Monday, including UH’s win over Fullerton (but excluding the UCLA win tonite), UH’s adj. RPI rank fell from 10 on Monday to 16 earlier this evening.
An interesting Big West matchup tomorrow: Cal Poly at UC Davis…earlier in the season Davis stretched Poly to five…
Re: Van Sickle. They didn’t need her. She says she’s healthy but no need to aggravate things.
Akana played fairly well 5-0-11. Showed athleticism on the slide.
As for the RPI, the computer will do what the computer does.
Team improving, congrats on the sweep. Iosia played lights out. Ross played great, passed well, got her share of kills. Imho, both were keys to get the sweep. Akana played well. Middles played pretty well, blocked great. TW also provides a big block, hope she gets on the court tomorrow. If Ross plays as well tomorrow, BVS can probably rest and rehab. While they played well overall, they can be much better. They are not anywhere near their ceiling yet. And ceilings are meant to be broken.
While everyone is looking at the RPI, I was looking at the W-L records. The Volleyball Committee (after all automatic berths are filled) studies the teams that did not win their conference tournaments but will not consider any team for an at-large bid if the overall W-L record isn’t .500 or better.
Thus, UCLA’s “Centennial Event” win was huge in another way. UCLA fans have not forgotten the fate of the 2018 UCLA squad. Had the Bruins lost to Stanford, the overall record of the Bruins would have been 10-8. Now it is 11-7. True, UCLA is not out of the woods with another rough match to go but a lost to Stanford would have pushed UCLA’s record to 10-9 with California the next opponent this Sunday.
Ditto for the Pepperdine Waves. The Waves had a 10-9 record and 69 rpi before upsetting the visiting San Diego Toreros. Tonight (Saturday) Pepperdine hosts BYU, and if this 11-9 team can pull off another upset, it should be back in the hunt for the league championship and with it the automatic berth.
