COMMENTS

  1. Andrew October 11, 2019 1:12 pm

Of the two matches this weekend, I think UCSB will be the tougher one. Key for Hawaii will be to obviously win this one but to also gain momentum for tomorrow night and to play a nice, good consistent match.

  2. Rabbit ears October 11, 2019 1:17 pm

As far as refs being too old. I doubt they have anyone else. So we (me included) shouldn’t be to hard on them.

  3. Cindy Luis October 11, 2019 4:00 pm

    1. i think it is tough with Hawaii playing back to back and UCSB not playing tonight.

  4. rabbit ears October 11, 2019 4:15 pm

no sound on Big west TV? is it only me.

  5. Kazu October 11, 2019 4:29 pm

4 i’m try to get big west tv but no luck. I must be missing something.

  6. Cindy Luis October 11, 2019 4:30 pm

can’t help you with big west tv. Radio is fine

  7. HawaiiMongoose October 11, 2019 4:39 pm

Our lack of offensive firepower is glaring.

  8. Manoafan October 11, 2019 4:41 pm

Jolie come back, Ross is no substitute. Even on match point for us against Fullerton, she shanked it over the net but luckily it was picked up by Okino and then hit out eventually by fullerton. Too many errors.

  9. Astroboy October 11, 2019 4:41 pm

Bigwest TV won’t work if you have an adblocker installed (which is why I use multiple browsers). It’s working for me on firefox but not chrome. I didn’t have sound originally, but it eventually came on.

  10. Big Island Volleyball Fan October 11, 2019 4:41 pm

There is sound on Big West TV. It’s just that I couldn’t get it on earphones or microphone,, only on the computer. I admit that it is weak but existent. I also tried listening to Hawaii radio, but it’s totally out of synch with the video,, too far ahead, so I shut that down.

  11. Chicken Grease October 11, 2019 4:42 pm

Ross need hot more from the outside!

  12. Chicken Grease October 11, 2019 4:42 pm

    * hit. Not “hot”

  13. RainbowWahineFan15 October 11, 2019 4:51 pm

I’m sorry but Ross should not be playing as the OH. Too many hitting errors and unforced passing and defensive errors in these last couple of matches and it’s continuing on into this Cal Poly match. I’d rather put Riley in for her and if 5 Freshman need to start and play then so be it.

  14. Cindy Luis October 11, 2019 4:57 pm

13 Et al. they don’t have a lot of options right now.
and you read the live thread Ross been out since it was 4-4. Wagoner in

  15. RainbowWahineFan15 October 11, 2019 5:08 pm

I get that but you would think that if you’re going to be used more often and you’re an undersized OH then work on different shot selections to add to your repertoire and try to get the other team out of out of system using those shots. Ross is too predictable and she only goes for the power swing majority of the time, which will not always work especially against big blocking teams.

  16. J October 11, 2019 5:17 pm

I keep hitting pause on the radio stream until I get close to syncing up with video.

  17. RainbowFaithful October 11, 2019 5:18 pm

Watching the CP match and it is clear that this team is stuck in a fixed mindset – that they are unable to overcome the injuries to star players JR & BVS. The mistakes at critical times are due to over-compensating for this change in personnel. It is the prime reason for the existence of sports psychology – MINDSET. Being able to pick yourself up and recover is a learned skill and I hope that the coaching staff can help the team in this area.

  18. Kazu October 11, 2019 5:18 pm

I can see a sweep coming.

  19. roygbivs October 11, 2019 5:25 pm

This team has lost their way…
keep losing leads and cannot finish the sets/matches out.

Some IQs plays not being made.
Depth on the bench is really poor.
RAM and the coaches need to do better game management. Sometimes, their decisions are questionable.

Making the NCAA tournament if they cannot win these two matches, will be slim to none.

  20. Cindy Luis October 11, 2019 5:25 pm

    ICYMI, Westerberg in for Williams

  21. Bleachercoach October 11, 2019 5:26 pm

Cannot help . People don’t realize how much Jolie could take control of the whole court. She makes every single 6 rotation player better than they really are so I think we should just go back playing our conventional DS and Libero. Hanna and Co. cannot play back and up front all game. We look pretty horrible in the Pass-Receive. I think it is broken!! The freshmen look so awkward and inconsistent without their aces playing.
Cal Poly is not good .We are just not much better for the last couple of weeks.
Hawaii the tale of 2 different teams in 2019.
I still love and support thus team 100%
    Go Bows!!!

  22. Andrew October 11, 2019 5:42 pm

man this is turning into the season of what could have beens

  23. RainbowFaithful October 11, 2019 5:47 pm

    22. Exactly. Such is sports however, injuries are common-place and next-up-mentality has to run deep in order to overcome.

The glaring issues seem to point to confidence and team chemistry, along with Freshman fatigue. A lot can be said for a team who embodies confidence, even when they do not win a match (Army for instance).

  24. CUQ October 11, 2019 5:58 pm

Too much…Jollie Rassmusen and Brooke Van Sickle are too much for the Wahine to overcome. Asking the freshmen to step up is too much for them and affects their performances too. There is a reason why the senior backups are not starters and they can’t pull it together.

  25. Kazu October 11, 2019 5:59 pm

Without JR this team can’t seem to put it together. I can see a sweep by UCSB tomorrow too. 0-2 and chances of going to the NCAA is out.

  26. Kauaiboy October 11, 2019 5:59 pm

This is quickly turning into a nightmare for us Wahine fans :-(. Hard to believe that one player could make such a difference in a team… gone are the days where this team looked like they actually enjoyed playing ball. Jolie really was the spirit of this team! Good luck tomorrow, hoping for better play and a better outcome.

  27. H-Man October 11, 2019 6:01 pm

They played good for two sets, but crumbled in the third. Serve-receive and passing continues to plague them. Can fix, but has to be real soon.

  28. islandman October 11, 2019 6:09 pm

The long road trip to Waco and then staying on the mainland for the two BW matches for 12 days in Sept was too much. Since then, they look tired.

  29. Andrew October 11, 2019 6:10 pm

I think at this point gotta hope that they bounce back after this road trip and don’t drop too many more matches. They gotta fight for 3rd place in the Big West. Anything less than third would be quite a disaster. I don’t think 2nd is possible at this point.

  30. islandman October 11, 2019 6:19 pm

    28. or maybe it was a 10 day road trip in Sept.

  31. tongo October 11, 2019 6:27 pm

Disappointing but the season is not over. The freshmen are making freshmen mistakes. They will get much better over the season. IMHO, RAM is intensely micro managing, standing over them on each and every play only adds unnecessary pressure. My humble suggestion is do your coaching in the timeout and then let your players play.

  32. Kauaiboy October 11, 2019 6:41 pm

    31. I agree, sometimes I think she is overwhelming them… I know that’s just her competitive spirit but at this point it doesn’t seem to be working.

  33. Bleachercoach October 11, 2019 6:44 pm

Do you bloggers Hanna should rotate out when she goes to the back? She is one of our more efficient OH although I don’t have her kpct on hand. I feel she is good back too but she needs some rest too so she can be alot more efficient up front. She can pass well when Jolie was back there but I feel more pressure is on her and she has been more inconsistent in the from the back passing erratic at times when she exhausted.
I feel like the Bailey that I witnessed at Utah for 3 yrs is not the same QB controlled QB she was. It was evident in her 3 service errors! Sometimes people lose the live of the sport due to “burn out,
Amber Igiede what was that making her serve then play backrow? As far as Amber; she hits hard sometimes then time she really needs to put a licking on an overpass but decides to patty cake it over…omg!!! I love I love Braelyn Robins-Akana step out slide (2 kills) awesome job Brae!! Okay it stops here!!! Hawaii is frustrated because everyone had very high expectations after going 9-0….such is life….move on ..adapt. Things will work out after all the injured players return

  34. peanut October 11, 2019 7:12 pm

They actually played pretty well after JR got injured beating UCLA and Missouri on the road. It’s only when BVS got injured that things really went south (3rd game against UCI). I think the coaches are trying to find the right combination of players but they are really limited with those 2 out. They should be alright when either or both returns.

  35. nomu1001 October 11, 2019 7:41 pm

    34. Agree totally.

There are also some very obvious problems that they have not yet corrected. Whether that is on coaches, players, or a combination of both, we don’t know. Tonight, it seemed they had very little idea what CP hitting tendencies were. And imho, as to the backrow, taking just a couple of steps up to dig balls on those cross court spikes might at least give them a chance to get a hand on the ball. The only time you stop movement is when the hitter is about the spike the ball. Reading the hitters better just not happening consistently. Reading the blocks just not happening consistently. No reliable passing.

Looking back at the games they won early on, JR and BVS bailed this young team out time and again.

  36. Manoafan October 11, 2019 7:43 pm

Well, even Freshmen-ladened Stanford with their great recruiting class 3 years ago needed Inky to step up in the Final Four. When Jolie and Brooke return, I think we’ll be just fine. HOPEFULLY, we can get an at-large bid again into the NCAAs because the greatest scenario to win the Big West now is to win out and hope Cal Poly stumbles along the way.

  37. Cindy Luis October 11, 2019 7:45 pm

    a couple of observations.
No one criticized the coaching style when they were winning.
Few questioned the long road trip that helped the RPI when going 3-1.
Without the two experienced juniors in Rasmussen and Van Sickle, the freshmen are being expected to do a lot more than they had been earlier
They were able to win without Rasmussen but the loss of Van Sickle has really affected the passing.

  38. Roger October 11, 2019 7:52 pm

Give the team and the coaches a break. They are in a rough spot right now. They will recover.

  39. nomu1001 October 11, 2019 7:56 pm

No. 37. You are right, few criticized coaching style when they were winning. And few should be criticizing coaching style when they are not winning. How about chalking it up to constructive criticism instead? One thing for sure, everyone loves this wahine team, win or lose, post season or not.

  40. nomu1001 October 11, 2019 8:04 pm

Just a thought, in a year or two, these freshmen are going to be winning a lot of games! Just expecting so much from a group of young players who we all know are very talented, and just get disappointed when they don’t play as well as you expect them to play. We’ll always support this team, win or lose, post season or not.

  41. Kahuna October 11, 2019 8:07 pm

The freshmen played well when there was no pressure on them. Now that Robyn have urged them to step up …maybe they are probably afraid to make mistakes and are pressing.

The freshmen can only do so much. It’s going to be up to the coaches to find the way out of the doldrums.

Either implement new plays, try different combinations or maybe even alter their practice routine. With a short bench, maybe the team full of freshmen are hitting the wall physically and mentally.

  42. Ashley October 11, 2019 8:19 pm

no hate, but why is krug there if she doesn’t play. I keep hoping she gets put in, but never does. MAYBE she could be a difference maker, unless she isn’t cleared. What is the point in taking a player, if you never intend on playing them

  43. rabbit ears October 11, 2019 8:20 pm

truely think this adversity will benefit the the freshmen down the road. Tough without Jolie and Brooke. No one expected the amazing early success. The girls just need to stick together and weather this storm until Jolie and Brooke return.

  44. Matt October 11, 2019 8:21 pm

It’s pretty clear that this team DESPERATELY needs Rasmussen back with this loss. At this point, there’s no room for error and this team’s NCAA streak may be at its end. How did this team get as high as #11 in the rankings to possibly being unranked after this is just too much to take. Robyn had this team to its best start, and it’s now starting to feel as if the walls are closing in. After this season, there will be no Iosia, no Choy. And Robyn’s going to have to find some solution to fix the team into winning shape. I just hope they can find an answer soon before it’s too late…

  45. IgnacioSaid October 11, 2019 8:31 pm

have not posted in awhile , but here goes—– agree with you (cindy , #19 , # 31) ,robin seems set on what should be done , and will not change! The team needs leadership (but it’s all part of the game) and should balance out in time. My biggest headache (have been watching/attending games for 40 years) is the failure of the University brass to correct travel and game schedules! Dave Shoji always tried to save the University money , so that’s why the scheduling is like it is! Time to upgrade–don”t you think?

  46. darkfire35 October 11, 2019 8:42 pm

As Cindy has alluded to, it is a combination of a lot of things. Robyn and staff has had to juggle so many things at the same time.
    1. Young, inexperienced players expected to perform
    2. 2 key injuries
    3. A long road trip of 4 matches
    4. How to make the best efficient use of all the talent you have, example, 2 great setters
    5. Who really fits in what position at what rotation?
    6. How do you keep the team motivated? Are they micro-managing as a previous blogger said? Is their motivation waning because they really need a good rest?

Some people may not respond well to constant “badgering” even if they did come here knowing it will be tough and with the desire to work hard and learn a lot. Robyn is a great coach with great experience; I’m pretty sure she’s tried to take a step back with her staff and figure things out while they wait for their star players’ return. Until then, as previously posted, I still support them 100% and will continue to go to their games because they deserve our support! GO BOWS!!!

  47. darkfire35 October 11, 2019 8:46 pm

    44. Yeah, it is unfair that the Wahine have to endure the back to back matches (here and the mainland) and the other team plays only 1 match. But, I’m pretty sure, the logistics and costs involved are normally not in our favor since we are so far away from everyone else. I mean, if I’m not mistaken, we do pay for some of their expenses when they come here!
    GO BOWS!

  48. Kauaiboy October 11, 2019 9:20 pm

I’ve watched a lot of volleyball this year and I would say our setting has been average which is disappointing since coming in everyone felt it was going to be a strength this year.

  49. Sports fan October 11, 2019 9:22 pm

Setters are mediocre at best….set locations are inconsistent even when the passes are good.

  50. Rabbit ears October 11, 2019 9:57 pm

I think the setting can only be as good as the passing

  51. Kauaiboy October 11, 2019 10:40 pm

Good setters better the ball and for most part of the year they haven’t been doing so. I’ve never seen setters under set their middles, particularly Iosia. Out of system set location has been pretty suspect. Now the system the Wahine are running certainly don’t make it easy on the setters but these are experience all conference setters, I guess I was hoping for more consistency.

  52. nomu1001 October 11, 2019 11:54 pm

Passers seem to be reacting to the sefve rather than reading it. So they get caught with the ball high, or end up lunging for the serve. And footwork sometimes off, where the passer has wrong foot forward at contact so ball naturally also ends up shanked out. Would help to drop shoulder when necessary rather than turning to contact ball. Just my worthless two pennies.

  53. warriorwahine October 12, 2019 3:52 am

wow..glad i didnt think about na wahine. its just ugly for them.

26 previous thread. im amazed you think lodging a protest will just open it up to everybody as if that isnt everybodys right. it certainly IS also hawai’is/robyns right. remember, uc irvine started the precedent 3 years ago. why should only they receive special privileges? and comparing that to what happened to pepperdines men? please. unlike what happened to na wahine, what happened at the pepperdines men game was a true official call. irvine received a non-official call from a nonofficial challenge and uci also delayed the game x2.

yes on replay. uh should at least try. irvine received it before, fair is fair.

  54. warriorwahine October 12, 2019 4:10 am

26 previous thread. a touch or no touch (like your example pepperdine mens game) is an official judgment call which is why i say start the replay at score 1-1 in that 5th set because irvine won an official challenge on that initial no 4 touch contact (yes i didnt fault the down ref for that even though it was obviously dubious because thats actually an official judgment call) resulting it from the score 2-0 for hawai’i into 1-1. the next rally and replay the point was an unofficial challenge and unofficial judgment call as well as irvine receiving a free pass besides delaying the game at least twice.

let big west decide on replay with the consideration that irvine did receive one such before and here they were pulling a fast one.

  55. H-Man October 12, 2019 4:45 am

51 I like your comment. I think the best setter I’ve seen on TV is Wisconsin’s setter (#2). Very few off-sets. She has the Badgers humming. I like them to be in the Final 4. Perhaps against Stanford. Both teams are awesome and fun to watch.

  56. nomu1001 October 12, 2019 8:32 am

So, here’s our gripe. The calls made by officiating was pretty bad throughout the game. For example, in game 3, Akana hit a slide out but seemed pretty clear it went off the backrow player’s hand. Calls at the net were off as well. Cal Poly has no replay? Then get better refs to call the game. Can’t say if it would have changed the outcome, but we have to expect better at this level of play.

  57. nomu1001 October 12, 2019 8:43 am

No reliable passing, no way to win games at this level. If Wahine passed just even less than half of the balls just a little better per game, they would have one loss right now.

  58. jmy October 12, 2019 9:12 am

    55. Wisconsin setter probably gets much better passes…

  59. blunite October 12, 2019 9:37 am

Statistically, more sets to the middles needed. At this point, I would set the middle 50% of the time, and change only against a triple block. The most kills and kill percentages are coming from the middles. Set the OHs as a change of pace, not the center of attention.

Example, recall the Columbia middle, who compiled 81 kills over the weekend. 2nd in the nation in kills/game.

  60. Optimist October 12, 2019 10:07 am

54 optics aside, it is Wahine’s prerogative to protest and they should if they feel as you do. Don’t know if you saw my FYI post (38) previous thread. Coaches and players to a lesser degree discuss/talk to with officials numerous times during a match that don’t always involve an official green card .

  61. WaveRipper October 12, 2019 10:40 am

Don’t know why there are so many surprised responses here.

Logically, when the UH lost to one of the conference’s bottom-feeders 2-3 then barely escaped the jaws of defeat from the conference’s bottom-dweller 3-2, it stands to reason that the UH would hit the wall against the league’s current conference leader.

    Go Bows!

  62. Cindy Luis October 12, 2019 11:30 am

    https://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=51494
    new thread for Saturday
catching up on a couple of comments.
Lone wolf scheduling: Shoji agreed to it, he said for one year, and then it never changed. Mostly done to save money but it doesn’t change the inequality of it all. Not sure what’s going to happen when UCSD and Bakersfield joins the conference next year. I have heard that there won’t be a true home-home with all teams.
Krug: on trip in case they need another middle but also used for practice purposes
officiating at Cal Poly: has been notoriously bad, including the past few matches with Hawaii. I don’t get why video replay not mandatory in the league. I know my son Tiff Wells tries not to get upset on air about the poor calls but you can hear his voice when with some of the unbelievable calls are when he is broadcasting. There was one play I can recall from last night when the Cal Poly player went into the net on her attack and it wasn’t called.
Ah Mow’s coaching style: IMHO she is more involved because they are using unfamiliar lineups and rotations. She is trying to make sure the players are where they are and aren’t getting called for overlaps. You’ve seen Iosia physically moving her teammates into position.
