Hawaii men’s basketball: Zigmars Raimo, Drew Buggs named captains
Two fourth-year Rainbow Warriors — post Zigmars Raimo and Drew Buggs — have been named captains for the 2019-2020 season.
Head coach Eran Ganot described the selection as a “joint process” involving players’ input and leadership criteria.
Raimo, a 6-8 senior from Latvia, has expanded his game from a being a low-post dweller to a stretch-four creator. He said he has worked on outside shooting, left-handed drives, and perimeter passing. During his freshman season, Raimo weighed as much as 252 pounds. He said he now is 227.
“He’s one of the toughest players in the league, one of the most improved players,” Ganot said. “He stands out to (teammates) as the guy you want to watch in terms of how he goes to work every day.”
Raimo expressed appreciation for the designation, and said he wants to emulate former captains Mike Thomas and Gibson Johnson as a leader.
Buggs is a fourth-year junior from Long Beach. This training camp, Buggs has played the point, off guard and wing. He also has improved his shooting accuracy, noticeably from 3-point range.
“It’s an honor to be a captain at the University of Hawaii,” Buggs said. “I’m going to try to live up to it each and every day.”
The Warriors are set for their annual Green & White Scrimmage at the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday. Tipoff is at 1 p.m. There is no admission charge. The ‘Bows have been short-handed at practice. Center Owen Hulland and guard Ahmed Ali are among the players who have been held out of practices because of ailments.

28. Wow you actually have to pay to even post that site?

No, I didn’t pay. I didn’t post
Found the link in one of the Idaho newspapers.
We’ll see how the weight loss affects Raimo’s ability in the paint defensively. He was a guy who used his body pretty efficiently (via toughness) allowing him to guard guys taller than him. But it was usually size (centers mostly but guys with height, some weight and average quickness to them) that gave him problems. Too light to guard that size 4 or 5 now I would think. Maybe matched up vs perimeter 4’s now?
Offensively the lighter version should allow him to attack quicker and finish nearer (and above maybe?) at the rim. He certainly has a good motor and that should be noticeable on offensive boards being a little quicker. Maybe will be kind of like Gibson Johnson now (kind of position-less?). A solid piece to the “interesting” puzzle that Ganot has forming. Going be awesome I think. Be ready.
Yeah…I hope the weight loss doesn’t affect his game. Honestly, I think he lost too Muhammad weight.
He used to look kind of rugged. Now he has small shoulders and arms too long. I wish he could have maintain some of his bulk and maybe work on being quicker without losing weight.
^^^Dang spell check..LOL.
Don’t know how the word “much” turned into Muhammad.
Re: Raimo’s weight loss. According to a report, he was the same weight 227-228 a year ago at the Green & White scrimmage. His biggest weight loss actually came during the offseason of 2018, which was most noticeable during last year’s summer league.
Hope Hulland and Ali are back at practice soon; a lot is expected from those two.
A little off topic, but what is the status of Stovall? I think he’s someone we def need on the field to have a chance against the Donkeys.
#7 – and Phillips.

MBB Green and White scrimmage on Sat at 1:00 pm.
PONO: I’m pretty sure I heard Rolo on his coach’s show say that Stovall made the trip to Nevada, but did not play, and will also be on the travel roster for Boise State. He sounded optimistic that Stovall has mended enough to get back on the field, if needed … particularly as a kick/punt returner.
Sharsh is coming off a career game — believe he was targeted nine times and made all nine catches — so I doubt that he would be supplanted as a starter.
Smart, Sharsh, Stovall, Byrd, Ward… Empty set!
I’m pretty sure Stovall had no chance of playing at UNR but they brought him so he could see family since his brother is on Nevada.
Hawaii at BSU – two MWC writers’ opinion.

Out of all the predictions i’ve seen on several websites, only two writers predict that Hawaii will pull off the upset. Time for the team to prove the majority wrong.
I think it is going to down to the basics… play clean game, smart football that its going to be won in the trenches. If Hawaii O-line and D-line falters this is going to be a blow out loss at Boise. If Hawaii plays like they did at Washington Huskies (not exactly a clean game) its going to be embarrassing National TV whooping… This means Hawaii will have to play near perfect football to keep the game close and let Boise beat themselves, then Hawaii might have a chance for a upset win.
Washington former Boise State coach advice to his old team: Get referee to toss out key Hawaii players with questionable calls…
We’ve watched the Warriors play well in all three phases at Nevada. If they do the same at Boise, it will be a good game. The Warriors mindset is everything. I believe they’ll win.
