Aloha Kakahiaka!
See you around noon!
Top 10!
Good morning!
Off to work. bbl. esme and whoooooosh!
Jim Donovan:
Looking forward to a great football season this year! BUT, how does it happen that Spring Scrimmage is scheduled on Kauai for the VERY HOUR that I have to be at the airport to leave for Portland to welcome my new grandson??? Is this a test??? 😆
Thanks for bringing the Warriors to Kauai! WE BELIEVE!
I hope the show goes alright, I would like to watch this one.
LizKauai,
It’s the sacrifice you must make to welcome into the world the next Warrior! 🙂
I’m not going to be able to watch the show until Thursday, so I hope that the Advertiser IT people have solved the problem with the replays. JD is a *very* important guest and I’m sure that there will be a lot of interesting information from the show…it would be a shame if many people cannot see it due to bandwidth or server problems.
Good Job Coach Gib on his first commit, I’m with al, could he be the next Magic??? Here’s some of this guys highlights. 6’8″ point forward ala Magic, Scottie Pippen, Lamar Odom… I can see the potential in this guy great height, ballhandling, vision, decent mid range game…nice!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8IEp6xpmPs
PAUOA BOY or AL: Re #14 – the guy committed? Any news story or confirmation of sorts on this?
Good morning Hawaii!
Question for JD later on…
What do you think about changing the name of all men’s sports to just Warriors and leaving Rainbows to the wahine? I think it gives our mens sports a more fierce attitude. Also, do you think we could bring back the all black jerseys for football or have Under Armour design a new all black uniform, maybe even for the basketball team? It seems to bring an intimidating presence and I know the players like former LB Solomon Elimimian stated that it made them feel a certain way on the field wearing all black!
What is going on with NaKoa? Where is the leadership headed?
tommui,
check out this article…
http://www.the-signal.com/news/article/26680/
Pauoa Boy….#14 thanks for that film……that being said, I didn’t see him dunk a single time,(unless they don’t allow it in his league). He’s a man playing among boys but, he needs work going to the basket. Needs to get stronger especially if he goes up against equal/stronger players at the next level, which I’m sure the coaches will address when he gets here.
He got the quickness and moves though, which is a big plus coming in.
tommui…
Trevor Wiseman 6’8″ 195lbs. PG/SF Sr. Golden Valley HS
The senior averaged 20.3 points and 2.1 steals per game along with a league-best 9.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists. He also shot 65 percent from the floor as Golden Valley won a piece of its second straight league title.
mctruck,
He can dunk no problem but I think his game is a little more finesse then anything sort of like Scottie Pippen. Once I found out yesterday this guy was coming to us, I called my buddy who is a recruiter for his high school. He says the guy is a beast and will be a star in college. The league he played in, in Northern Cali has some legit D1 ballers though, so although the competition didn’t look like much, well shute the guy is 6’8″ with skills. In high school if I was 6’8″ with skills I would look like Lebron James in Hawaii…
protector, I agree. Moniz has a grasp of the position and of the leadership role that will be hard to displace. Still, the history of UH QBs suggests that the starter will not play a full season. Glad we finally have a lot of experience in that position.
NYUH,
Barring a complete collapse, I’m sure it’s Moniz’s position to lose. He grasped so much of the O in such a short time, I can’t see him being complacent & he should improve even more if protection from the O-Line is there. It’s going to be an early test-of-fire w/ the USC pass-rush, though. I’d love it if they started off with a couple of power running plays up the gut just to catch them by surprise! Then revert back to their normal R-and-S on.. Even Kiffin, Sr. wouldn’t know what was going

Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂
The new recruit looks great. Nice get, Coach Gib.
Good Morning everyone! Hope everyone has a good one!
Jim,
Any chance on getting all fans & supporters together to say Mahalo to Bob Nash, fellow letterwinner and alum, player, coach, friend?
If not via UHAD then an outside group running it off site?
Fundraising potential here with funds specifically earmarked; since Bob did so much to raise grad rates for bb players, then maybe cover charge (donations) to Nagatani Athletic Center to help provide an academic tutor for athletes ($33K@ year) or alleviate some of the summer school costs for bb players??
Rainbow Cliff now is the time to weigh in!!
Count me in to kokua when the time comes!!!
Mr. Donovan – what do you think about going back to charging general admission for volleyball and baseball? If not, what about being able to purchase student (HS and under) tickets in the lower bowl for volleyball?
Mr. Donovan,
At the Wahine Softball Stadium, there is a lack of advertising signage. Also, when the games at the stadium are televised there is no sort of rotating advertising board behind home plate like they have at Les Murakami Stadium for baseball.
Would the athletic department seek more sponsors for Wahine softball to assist with the deficit that the program has since it is a non-revenue sport?
Good Morning Jim,
First of all I would like to commend you on the quick hire of Gib Arnold. I know you and the committee worked tirelessly to hire him and just by his actions the first week and a half he looks to be the right man, my first question and this was probably under the Herman Frazier regime:
COACH NASH SAID THAT WHEN HE WAS HIRED AS THE HEAD COACH HE WAS RESTRICTED TO THE TYPE OF PLAYERS HE COULD BRING, WHICH MEANT NO “NON-QUALIFIERS”, HAS THIS SAME RESTRICTION BEEN GIVEN TO ARNOLD OR HAS THERE BEEN ANY RESTRICTION ON RECRUITING PLACED ON ARNOLD?
I believe this was stupid and I hope that Gib will be given all the freedom to bring in whoever he wants.
Second question:
WILL GIB BE GIVEN THE SAME SALARY BUDGET FOR THE HIRING OF HIS ASSISTANTS AS NASH WAS?
It sounds like there is less because of the buyout of Nash’s contract.
Thank you for your time.
If we must deviate from a pure RnS, it would be nice to see a multiple RB attack like the option, considering the stable of good looking backs we have this season.
Mr. Donovan,
You recently submitted a financial report to the Board of Regents and in it you specifically mentioned the amount of tuition revenue non scholarship athletes at UH Manoa bring in to the university every semester and I believe it was in the 2 million dollar area. While mentioning this, the report clearly stated that if UH Manoa did NOT offer certain sports that this sort of revenue would be lost to upper campus as these non-scholarship athletes would seek other universities.
To me, it seems like there may be some “rumblings” of upper level individuals seeking to cut a sport and you are trying to defend against it. Is my assumption correct?
Mr. Donovan,
Have you spoken with the new UH President about the state of UH athletics and the future with regards to budget cuts and how she feels about the contribution athletics has at the university level?
Moniz, is a solid QB, doesn’t make many mistakes, can lead and is smart. Graves has a lot of upside and will get his chance. At this point I feel Moniz gives us the best chance to win games especially with USC up first. If through spring training and fall camp Graves can prove otherwise then so be it, let him ball out! Still where is Brent Rausch in all of this? Isn’t Shane Austin listed as #2…???
Aloha Jim,
Congrats for doing a stellar job thus far. The UH AD job is very challenging one, given the current economic situation.
How’s the morning walk working for ya? What are your goals? From what I understand, you put in some milage everyday before work. Good for you!
Wasn’t the offense which Moniz ran in JUCO very similar to the RnS?
Mr. Donovan,
I have heard that there have been break-ins at the Wahine softball’s batting cage/equipment shed resulting in damaged equipment and possibly some items being taken. There was an article in another local publication a few months ago in which Bob Coolen, through some friends of his, assisted in raising funds to repair the batting cage nets as a result of the vandalism.
What kind of measures are being taken by the athletic department or upper campus to prevent such things from occurring and what is being done to assist programs that suffer these losses without them having to do their own “grass-roots” fundraising?
Speaking of Moniz, another question for Jim Donovan:
I’m thinking a little outside the box here so bear with me. Given that we can expect a healthy Moniz to put up some dazzling numbers this season, would it be fair to give him some pre-season Heisman hype? We know he’d be a long shot, but is there any harm in putting his name out there?
jd
so far it seems that gib arnold is doing all the right things.
will the recruiting budget be increased to facillitate the international search for student/athletes?
Good morning, al and Kazz!
Is it DPK? Is it?
We shall see… 😎
I am very much aware of the public explanations for UH’s not haven’t a student activity fee; however, what are the real reasons for not implementing one?
Would you be willing to take part in a campus working group made up of the various constituencies – ASUH, GSO, faculty, UHM administrators, AD administrators, Koa Anuenue, reps from the booster clubs, and perhaps even a Tsai-ko to research the issues and come up with a workable solution to present to the Board of Regents.
Mahalo for your hard work.
Mr. Donovan,
Is there another fundraising dinner event, much like the Grand Slam Celebration, planned in the near future to assist with raising funds towards the athletic budget in the upcoming 2010-2011 season?
Personally, I think it would be well-attended if it was an annual thing.
Mr. Donovan,
With the emphasis that new Basketball Coach Gib Arnold is/will be putting on recruiting nationally and internationally, will his budget for recruiting be substantially upgraded from what it currently is? If not, is there an outside source of funds that the new Coach envisions being able to tap into that will supplement his recruiting budget? In order to play a pro-set offense, players with more athletic talent than we are accustomed to seeing here will need to be recruited to join the team. Otherwise, Coach Arnold’s preferred offense cannot be run successfully and he will need to resort to a “system” type offense like the “Flex-motion” that we are accustomed to seeing.
U funny, Kazz.
Whoops!! not haven’t = not having
Great shuffling of UH football coaches. Nick Rolovich is and will become a greater play caller. Mr. Aranda is a defensive genius. Big Mack Attack, you are one smart cookie! Looking forward to football season. I feel this will be a great year. GEEV UM GIB! +++Roy Hobbs, the best there ever was+++
Mr. Jim Donovan,
I am a season ticket holder and UH alum. I am on the fence this year about renewing my season tickets. But I am slammed with pay cuts, no overtime, and longer work hours.
How can you convince me too renew my tickets and still manage to pay my bills and taxes?
What can you say to the hundreds of fans on the same boat as myself who have to juggle tough economic times to see a coach cry on national TV and burn a bridge to future games with Notre Dame?
I need help? Can you lower beer prices to $6 at No Aloha stadium?
Thanks,
London
aloha mr. donovan,
congratulations on steering this ship through stormy waters. realizing the increasing deficit that the department is facing, what are a few of the marketing concepts that you will use to attract more fans to Aloha Stadium?
keep up the good work, give my best to your bride,
Bulla
Question for JD.
Will UH be bidding to host final fours for mens or womens volleyball in the future?
Why do you think the NCAA passes UH up on hosting 1st and 2nd round matches?
PAUOABOY: THANKS FOR THE UPDATE!
whoosh
pipty!
don’t forget that there are a lot more to being an offensive coordinator than calling plays. they should be responsible for setting up practices, hopefully, looking at a progressive system where you start from nothing then teach (coach) newer things involving all player and coaches, and, as the days go by, add and teach more and more plays/techniques, etc. so when USC arrives………UPSET!!!!!!!! same can be said with the defensive cooridinator, broken down into individual coaches/positions.
Jim,
With Don Murphy announcing recently that there will not be a Pigskin Pigout this year, is there something being organized to replace that event? Maybe a fundaiser in the Stan Sheriff similar to how the Grand Slam is set up? If I remember correctly, there was a fundraiser during the summer before Coach Mack’s first season to generate funds to renovate the coaches offices and to give fans a chance to meet him.
On another note, what is being done to prevent a repeat of the public relations fiasco caused as a result of the mishandling of the parking pass allocation last year? Although that was more due to Koa Anuenue and not your doing, that really upset a lot of loyal fans.
Thank you
Interesting discussion about which is America’s “Greatest” game vs. it’s most “complex” game to coach.
[…] The Warrior Beat| UH football, University of Hawaii athletics … […]
The baseball team has only been to the post season once in the past decade. Do you think they need to make the regionals for Coach Trapasso to get an extension on his 1 year contract?
Jim Donovan:
For the last 2 home games for men’s volleyball, fill the SSC by lowering
the ticket price to the Upper Level. Be sure to publicize it.
Or, do whatever it takes to fill the seats.
Mr. Dovovan.
How many athletic participants do we have in the athletic department?
Jim Donovan,
How many trainers do we have assisting Tommy Heffernan with training of the athletes?
Mr. Donovan,
What are your “upper shelf” numbers in terms of personnel that would be required to run an ideal atheletic enhancement and injury prevention program?
Mr. Donovan,
What would the estimated cost be to run that “upper shelf” training program?
Mr. Donovan,
If we could somehow get the okay from all of the respective unions at the school, would it be possible utilize volunteers to asist Tommy Heffernan with his training program?
Along the same lines, what would be the possibility of utilizing volunteers to assist the different coaches with grade and class checks?
Mr. Donovan,
Is there a possibility in the future that the TV contract can be set up so that there is one broadcast outlet, but then it is available to various providers to put it up to watch? An example would be KFVE earns the rights to do the TV production, but then Dish, Oceanic, HawaiianTel, DirectTV, etc,… all have access to put it up for PPV? For one thing, this would reach the Hawaii audience not only in Hawaii, but on the west coast and beyond. For us as consumers it would not force us to use an expensive alternative to follow the team.
Hi, Jim,
What about using a student ‘mascot’ instead of paying an entertainer (Vili) at the football games?
Mr. Donovan:
There are four(4) ladies who always support UH teams using the Stan Sheriff Center, aka, the “Aunties”.
Will the Athletic Department, sometime in the future, formally recognize their contributions as they have been ardent supporters of men and women volleyball and men’s basketball?
I purchased a copy of the NFL draft preview special edition by USA TODAY as I was interested in reading about several teams and the direction(s) they might be taking and what their current plans are for players already on their rosters.
One of the teams in particular I was interested in was the Redskins; in the area of team needs, three areas were listed, (1)offensive tackle, (2)running back, (3)qb. With regards to the qb situation: “With three-year starter Campbell likely to return only for a one-year deal as a restricted free agent, expect new coach Shanahan to choose a qb early and prepare him to be the starter in 2011.”
I was surprised there was absolutely no comment/mention bout our CB????…oh well??
Mr. Donovan:
Would we violate NCAA rules if we begin a “donation” request, purely voluntary, for all fans who attend the Wahine softball games?
mctruck, Colt is flying under the radar in Ashburn. But so is Chris Cooley. I think this may be due to their IR status.
I am praying that Colt will get a serious opportunity this year.
What can a liitle guy like me who is on a tight budget do to be part of the football program? I find the idea of joining the Na Koa Football Club or Koa Anuenue quite intimidating. I am just Mr. normal little guy down the road, blue collar worker, who loves the Warriors, and would like to be considered as the “twelfth man”. But like I said, being in the Na Koa club is intimidating. I can’t even afford a $100.00 one time donation. What I can afford is something like having $20.00 a month taken out of my checking account every month just like the United Way does. I do that every month for the United Way and never notice it. Now that is something that I can afford. I bet that there is 50,000 “little guy” fans just like me who could afford $20.00 a month. So that when the Warriors play, we can feel like we are on the field with them. Are there any possibilities for me to be a “twelfth man” like that? Umi kuma lua – twelve.
50,000 fans times $20.00 a month = $12,000,000.00
$1,000,000.00 for expenses, $11,000,000 left to cover tuition, travel, and assistant coaches salaries.
Me and my UmiKumaLua friends might be a big help.
Maybe can put our names on one of the back of the 50,000 chairs at the Aloha Stadium.
Redskin Insider thinks Shanahan and Bradford might be an ideal combo
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/mike-shanahan/the-redskins-shanahans-and-sam.html?wpisrc=nl_sports
Don’t they know what they already have at a very cheap price with Colt?
i was told that mel delaura, while doing a good job at strength and conditioning, was supposed to be a receivers coach but was hired as a S&C coach because there wasn’t any opening for rec. coach. Tom Heffernan IS a true S&C coach. judging by recent comments, he seems to be doing a great job. i don’t know how many assistants he has, but i do know that there are undergrad students in waiting helping him out and getting on the job training.
#69…
Sam Bradford is going to the Rams with the first pick. Redskins would need a miracle to happen if Sam Bradford was available at #4. Shanahan is going to open up the QB competition, it’s up to Colt to show his stuff or ask for a trade already to a team where he can get some PT or learn from an aging Pro Bowler like say, Peyton Manning or Brett Farve??? Soon they are going to need replacements and why not learn from two of the NFL’s best. Obviously Colt ain’t learning from Campbell cause we all know he’s a Byron Leftwich type…a.k.a. garbage!
chopsueyboy – what may be obvious to Hawaii fans who have followed Colt through the years seems to be invisible to most of the east coast writers. All they can see is last year’s preseason effort, complete with INTs and another torn labrum.
If I were a betting person, my money is still solidly on Colt. So I turn to Ke Akua and pray that 2010 is in the plan for Colt. 😆
AD Donovan: In the light of the changing world, what do you see in the future for UH Athletics? How important is it for us to turn to the WEST (Asia, Australasia) for opportunities?
Jim,
Following up on Mr. A-House’s question in #66, could we have donation boxes set up at the top of the stairs in the softball stadium to collect donations? I know people would support Na Wahine with whatever they can afford.
K, I’m off to go kill slugs. Hope the replay is glitch-free so I can watch it later. Can we watch Coach Gib’s interview now? Has that been fixed & put back on the list of archived Warrior Beat shows?
Esme & out….
Shanahan was famous in Denver for his O line blocking schemes of smaller quicker guys, If he does the same in Washington, It will play right into Colt’s q
Re: Colt
Colt knows, and has acknowledged…..and has accepted the fact that it will always be him against the world. Although there’s a lot of folks on this football planet who got great love for Colt, the powers that be (media, certain coaches and analyst) have always treated him like a stepchild. Colt is gonna have an uphill battle from here on out. The good news is….it’s always been that way for him and he’s always won. I’ll put my money on Colt to be just fine.
Again, he’d look good in Purple and gold!
BIK
Colt’s theme song should be Tupac’s “me against the world.”
BIK
Mahalo AD Donovan!
Coach Mack mentioned that there is a large group of coaches from Japan who will be attending the upcoming coaches clinic. To what end is the effort to cultivate these relationships being guided?
AD Donovan- in case you are looking at team names – I still like *.Bows for everything except football. They can be Warriors. And the female VB team can be the Wahine.
SwimBows, VolleyBows, BaseBows, SoftBows, GolfBows, TrackBows, SailBows… you get the picture. 😆
oops. BasketBows
AD Donovan – have you been in touch with J. David Miller? I would love to see UH Athletics benefit from possible upcoming opportunities around his book “Hawaii Warrior Football: A Story of Faith, Hope, and Redemption “.
Howzit Aunty Liz, Happy Belated B-Day to you…
Bows get a nice ring to it when comes to all that but at the sametime these days trying to bring a Warrior attitude and being associated with Rainbows no seem to manly to me. I just saying we already get looked at like the bastard children in everyone’s eyes and thats just giving those guys more fuel to pick at us. I mean hearing the term Rainbow Warriors seems like a contradicting thing to me. I dunno just my thoughts about it. Its better suited for our wahine than for any of our kane teams…IMO.
Pride,
Na Koa and the Foundation is not set up to debit an account at this time. I can ask about how this may be accomplished in the future however and repost when I receive an answer.
The bank (your bank) may set up a debit from your checking and/or savings account. Every quarter or year you could direct the bank to send it in the the Na Koa endowment. This will insure that the money is directly supporting Warrior Football players.
Buy a single ticket, or buy a season ticket, or buy ppv, or contribute to Na Koa, or contribute to Letterwinners, or even by posting on this blog, you are a 12th warrior on the field and don’t let anyone tell you ‘it ain’t so’.
Good morning everyone!
Shucks…at work today and cannot watch the show live. It is good to see Jim Donovan here!
Pride & Co
I will buy the 12th man name plates (UmiKumaLua) for your seats. Let’s make this happen!
My contact information is still
don.weir@uhf.hawaii.edu until tomorrow.
Pride and Don Weir- yes, the easiest way to donate regularly is to set up a “merchant account” for NaKoa on my bill payer account at the Credit Union. It can be done automatically or whenever I feel like it.
All we need is NaKoa’s contact info, phone no. and address. A check for any amount is sent to them when we want.
…me and 26 others “Staying Tuned”
Rainbows vs. Warriors? They both work for me. I am not sure of the origin of “Rainbows” for UH, but…
When I was young, indestructible and sat in the rain in the termite palace with UH losing late in the game, a rainbow would sometimes appear over the stadium. It raised our spirits and inspired the team. We usually won. When I was at UH, I was not surprised at the name.
SteveM,
You sat thru games in the sun at Honolulu Stadium?
heheheh
….still “Stay Tuned” 🙄
…on the plus side, no glitches so far! 😉
On a lunch break and wanted to get my 2 cents in….
Mr. Donovan ~ How about a Telethon to kick off every Warrior season? Bring in our celeb entertainers from out of the hotels and lounges. Mr. Tsai could display his talent for singing and dancing.
Have the UH players from past teams man the phones and take pledges. Also a good way to drum up some business for Pride’s idea of a monthly contribution of $20.00 a month. We can build on that goal of 50,000 donors every year.
d1島 — Yes. Used to surf too back in those days. I was very dark brown tanned. I told you I would go today if I could wear my speedos… 😐
Not.
…and in those days, no raincoat too. Best part of the game was coming home soaking wet and drying out my wallet and cards for days. No drip-dry UA wear and plastic money back then. Sometimes I envy Kazz!
Pride:
maybe a good place to start is have someone create a t-shirt with the UmiKumaLua (UH 12th man) as the logo with all sales going to NaKoa.
I know the A-Houses are good for 4 right off the bat!!!
Jason Elam retiring. Would he come back to help coach (as a volunteer) the kicking unit?
Its a great honor that the Denver Bronco’s are signing former UH “Rainbow” Jason Elam to a one day contract so that he could retire with the team that invested so much in him. While it is a sad day that we won’t be seeing Jason Elam in the NFL, I am very happy to see a UH Alumnus retire a “proud” NFL player.
Best of luck to Jason Elam! Next stop……….Hall of Fame!
Excellent video and audio today!
A-House, could you post JD’s response to your question about voluntary donation at Wahine Softball? Interested in his answer….can’t watch the program today….mahalos..
Kazz…yesterday’s #158 post…seems to me the No Clue At All gang is just making a sideways exit on this issue. “Give the benefit of doubt to the pitchers”..? How’s an umpire to do that?…ask for help from the base ump and let’s have a 5 minute discussion to determine “benefit of doubt”, and to whose benefit..batter or pitcher?…
I cast my lot with WARRIORS!..no if, ands or butts!…
WARRIOR FOOTBALL!
WARRIOR VOLLEYBALL! (Kane and Wahine)
WARRIOR BASEBALL!
WARRIOR SOFTBALL!
WARRIOR BASKETBALL! (Kane and Wahine)
WARRIOR SOCCER!
WARRIOR…WARRIOR…WARRIOR!!!!!!!!!!
Donovan,
If coach Nash had won 20 plus games yet failed on the other 5 criterias would he still be our head coach?
londonbobby,
Leila shoulda read your entire question…she missed the point!
Glitch free…
d1-
Pride’s too.
A few yrs back my old school needed to change the turf for the fb field, so instead of waiting for legislature money, they put out a flyer to all alumnis that if you donate $25 for each sq ft of turf, your name would be on a plaque outside the stadium showing the place on the field where your money was used. I don’t know how much turf needs to be replaced, but using 60,000 sq ft and selling each for $25 for recognition, would generate approx 1.25 million dollars.
Somebidy invite JD to the practice TGate and we can “grill” him on some things…I’ll make sure to bring enough charcoal..!!@#@??!
DPK,
Maybe The Princess gotta give erryboddy Question Asking Lessons! 🙂
If the Redskins draft any QB, it’ll be tough sledding for Colt. He’d have to beat out two veteran QBs and a rookie where lots of bonus $ was put up. Colt will have to out perform everyone in mini-camp. We all know he can do it.
Mahalo Jim Donovan! Great show Stephen, Princess et al (dat’s not with Al!)….
EGGS-cellent show (a little Easter plug there)!!!
Congrats, HA on a glitch-free show!
JIM DONOVAN WILL YOU PLEASE CHANGE ALL MENS SPORTS AT UH TO JUST WARRIORS AND KEEP THE GREEN,WHITE,AND BLACK THEME COLORS. IT’S TIME JIM TO MAKE THAT CHANGE AS THE STADIUM IS READY TO MAKE THE CHANGE TO THE GREEN AND WHITE. THE RAINBOWS WAS THE PAST GENERATION AND THE NEW GENERATION IS YEARNING AND SCREAMING FOR JUST WARRIORS. PLEASE HAVE THE VISION AND THE COURAGE TO MAKE THAT CHANGE LIKE JUNE JONES AND MIKE WILTON HAD. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE FUTURE OF UH TO HAVE ONE UNIFIED NICKNAME………WARRIORS!!!! FOR THE WOMEN SPORTS IT COULD BE JUST WAHINE, SOUNDS GOOD TO ME, OR WAHINE WARRIORS.

Relatively glitch free show today. Good audio and vid.
NorthShoreFan ~ JD sez he is all for a donation box for the Wahine SB stadium. He prefers the money go to Coach Coolen for much needed repairs and replacements.
When you get a chance, try the replay of the WB show.
…and yes, JD is always invited to our T-gates. he even offered to clear a place in the parking lot for us once. We like it better where we are at. Much more spacious for Koakane to spread out for his power nap after his beru tasting sessions.
Too bad JD ran out of time. I would have wanted to hear his answer on the Telethon suggestion I posed. A 24 or 48 hour program like that would be very informational about all things UH. I see it as a huge way to connect with people who ordinarily would never contribute to the UH. People could buy tickets, DVD’s and maybe even Warrior monogramed T-shirts & BVD’s!
Kekoa,
Great idea with the telethon.
Live personalized autograph items with former players on tv signing as the pledge comes in, or for the more popular players, a live auction during the telethon.
Norhtshore Fan:
I tried the “replay” and it SUCKED big time – mostly black screen, no audio or video, herky-jerky, you name it!!!
Hope you are more lucky than me!!.
Kekoa – I thot KK’s power nap was during the game! 😆
A-House, yup. very jerky…junk reloading time on replay. Shucks.
HiHo!
Same here Ahouse.
The live broadcast was flawless though.
Mahalo Pride for speaking up for the pledge drive I first suggested back in December. Little guy?
Don Weir – at our meeting three months ago with folks from Koa Anuenue, we were told that monthly charges to debit or credit cars could be arranged with participating financial institutions. I assume that this is one of the issues being discussed between Stretch and Vince Baldemor & his staff.
Re the Wahine softball team donations drive at their home games. Spoke with Carl Clapp about this and he agreed to place it on the staff’s weekly meeting agenda. In presenting the proposal, I told him that several regular T-Attendees – including myself – would be more than willing to volunteer. He laughed when I passed along the suggestion from last week – sorry, cannot remember who made it – that maybe one of the defensive linemen could guard the jar and draw some attention to the upcoming football season at the same time.
Final post about various legislative proposals. We are four weeks and two days away from the closing of this year’s Legislature. Lots will happen during this time.
It is not at all unusual for the House and the Senate to pass very different versions of a particular bill. That’s why there are conference committees which will work together on a compromise – each conference committee has to to know when to hold and when to fold.
However, it is extremely rare for the originating chamber to accept the changes in its bill that the other chamber has passed out especially if it’s a controversial issue such as tax increases or public service cuts. Out of 300 or so bills that reach the final stages of discussion, maybe two might be ready to be sent to the Governor this early in the process.
If the differences cannot be worked out in conference committees, then the bill dies although elements of it can be inserted into other bills which are surviving the process.
Once both chambers pass the conference committee’s version of the bill, then it is sent to the Gov to sign, veto or let go into law without a signature. If she gets legislation ten or more working days prior to the closing day, she must make a decision while the Legislature is in session so that they can, if necessary, override her veto. Otherwise, all bills passed up to the 5th floor within the last ten days of the Session have until 45 working days after the Legislature closes to be signed, vetoed, or let pass into law without signing or vetoing. This would be shortly after the Fourth of July.
A special session will be called on the 46th day after the regular session to override vetoes – if needed. Last year, about 40 bills were enacted into law this way – including one that I’d been working on since 2005.
This is not the end, however. If there’s something we want to support and it takes money to implement it, then we have to work Da Gov to release the funding.
However, come December, there’s be a new butt sitting behind the desk in the Governor’s office and he will have that authority passed along to him if necessary.
You can get involved – contact your legislators and talk to them. You can make a difference. The problem is that most folks don’t talk to their legislators and, since mind-reading is not a required skill to hold office, they aren’t going to get what you want.
Remember that there a thousand Number One Priorities out there and if only one or two of them are conveyed to your state representative or senator, then guess what happens?
Back to work – can hardly wait for the weekend. How can we track the softball team’s progress if there’s no direct media coverage?
Mr. Donovan, it is time to initiate the student activity fee. $100 per semester would do it. Let’s get with the times. Just about every other college or university has such a fee and the amount is very reasonable.
Have Keith Amemiya help you get this done. It is way overdue.
W-Doc – one can set up their own checking account to make automatic payments to Na Koa using the donor’s bill paying system. Na Koa just needs to provide an address and phone number.
Hi!
Once again, the WB Show is herky-jerky.
So, if you bank on-line, why not set up an automatic monthly payment to Na Koa.
Oops. Apologies to Liz who made the same suggestion about automatic monthly payments a bit earlier.
The live feed worked for me.
A really good show.
U of Oregon offered $2M to former USC mbb coach.

I have to try the replay because I am usually at school for the live feed.
Usually, I just choose not to watch the replay. But, I figured JD would have some good information. I hope someone will post a semi-transcript of his interview!

Good one.
Good to see that the Denver Broncos will let Jason Elam retire as a Bronco. That is very classy and am sure most appreciated by all the Elam clan, friends, and schools.
This is going to be a “fun” spring for the Warriors as the two young bucks put their warriors thru practice. It seems that the Warriors are returning to college fb practices which will truly get them in condition for the fall season.
Good Luck Jason Elam and Mahalo for all the memories.
We have a photo of you with azngamer808 over 20 years ago
way back when UH football had photo days for the public to meet and take pictures with the players and Coach Wags
Does anyone know if Brent Rausch is eligble for a medical redshirt since he didn’t play a single snap and was injured for most of last year? Otherwise he’s a senior this year. I know Moniz is the favorite to start this year, but don’t forget Rausch was the #2 QB last year and was initially named the starter in 08. At a minimum he’d be a nice back-up to have for two more year in addition to Austin. Based on some rulings from the NCAA on who is elgible for medical redshirts, I’ve noticed it seems like it’s kind of random on who is determined to be eligble.
LizK and Wafan:
Individual donations to specific programs such as Na Koa or the Wahine Volleyball Boosters Club have always been available.
However, what we checked into was setting up a T-Fund to accept pledge donations throughout the year so that when something comes up, the money is already raised by Tsai-kos.
My personal preferences are to support women’s sports in general, but I certainly would be willing to help upderwrite a particular expense or purchase for one of the men’s sports programs.
Let’s take a couple of examples: Let’s say that the football program needs to purchase 10 pieces of training room equipment at $1,000 each.
A T-Fund set up six months ago with 80 donors giving $20 a month has raised $9,600 minus $338 admin fee; however, 20 individuals requested that their monthly donations go to other programs so that would mean that only $7200 would be able to be spent on the equipment.
The balance could be raised in a number of ways, but no matter how, the T-Fund has easily raised three-quarters of the cost of the equipment.
Or let’s say that the Wahine softball team goes all the way to the NCAA Super Regionals, but the players are expected to provide their own per diem expenses for meals. Assuming that tthe team arrives two days before the Regionals begin and stays on the Continent between the two tournaments for a total of ten days, then the T-Fund could go a long way towards underwriting these meal costs.
As for the other fund based upon a student activities fee which puts $50 into athletics programs and $50 to a variety of mauka campus activities, that would generate generate an estimated $1.8 million dollars a semester. The AD distribution would be determined by its administration, but even so, that could be used to help reduce the deficit, pay for summer school tuition, underwrite travel expenses, pay coaches more, recruit more intensively, etc. It probably could not be used for construction or renovations costs.
Back to work. Let’s hope that things move forward iwth these fundraising ideas in a timely fashion.
ok really, I dont know what the big deal is with hitting a debit card every month for what ever the donation is. You’d be surprise how easy and seamless it is all within QuickBooks.
1) set up a merchant acct within QB.
2) Input donor info + the donation fund amount
3)set up recurring charges to your donors credit card
and walla, get paid regularly and on-time whether you bill weekly, monthly or quarterly. I use with with my customers that do installments and works like a charm. As Rap would say “..eh, no go too fricken fast wat u think dis is.. automation.” ahh, yes sir it is..
Sure there is SOME operating expense in inputing the data or to synch QB with online donation cart for easier automation but surely it will outweigh the monthly donation that keeps rolling in… emphasis on “keeps rolling in”
ahh, there’s probably more to it than that.. never mind me..
Lucky we have JD.
If there was a list of top up and coming AD’s in the country. JD would be right there amongst the top – no question!
Greg Alexander piece on KGMB news now.
Someone brought up a donation box idea at UH games?
I think a really cool Idea would be to roll a promo video during timeouts at UH events showing how donations are needed for the athletes and the program. Hint, bring in June Jones speakers. just a couple key points to really hit it home.. then ask for a text donation. $10 bucks $5 bucks, whatever… might be able to raise some really good money with +40k in attendance with hardly any effort… Automation! emphasis on “effort”
not saying make it sad like Haiti but surely someone in UH film school can make a short video that would oooze out text donations at games / events

I am not privy to previous discussions about the debit situation. I can speak only from where Na Koa is at this time, and this for me is the last time to speak for Na Koa. It took us several months to make on-line membership payments happen. This was due to Na Koa having no on-line presence that wasn’t three years old.
Na Koa now takes on-line membership payments. Next step is to accept donations on a cyclical basis.
I will ask about this but my answer will be straight from the Foundation and will only address Na Koa’s operation.
As of now, if you need a phone # and address to make something work:

To the WB tech personnel,
Skip the video of the interviews. The replays never work. Let the public access the audio portion of the videos, which I think is doable. See. Easy solution. Everybody will be happy.
Can’t watch the crummy video to get an answer to my question:

What is going on with NaKoa? Where is the leadership headed?
Looks like Arnold’s first recruit is a good one. Trevor Wiseman is big guy for a point guard or point forward at 6’8″, 220 lbs. Saw his highlights and he can really handle the ball, very good mobility, and from what I saw, can shoot the ball pretty good. As a high school senior he has time to develop his game and skill set to get better and better. Definitely, he’s a Division I caliber player. Good stats in points, rebounds, and assists too. That’s the kind of players that we need. Ball handling skills, shooters, can penetrate and create their own shots. We need a few guys like that, plus one stud rebounder.
When Arnold meets w/ his returning players when he returns from his latest trip, maybe we will find out if one or more players will be released from their scholarships. It’s a tough thing, but it’s business. If some players are not deemed Division I players we should get some prospects in to replace them.
Stephen Tsai,
i had a good chuckle from this…”Rolovich took over the play-calling duties, from Ron Lee, for the final 12 games last season”
ok time to go buy another dozen eggs, im down to my last 11…haha jk =P
so does anyone know what would happen if Na Koa eliminates the director position or of they choose to go with someone else?….Does Lumpkin have a place to go should something unfortunate happen?
CNN reports that one of Tiger Wood’s mistresses will be there at Augusta. Paparazzis will have a field day.
Derek..good comment. Wiseman looks like a baller. Take a look at this link. It has a picture of Trevor and also some stats of some January games. At 6’8″ he has put up some wicked stats against some tough competition. In one game, “Wiseman had a tremendous overall game, finishing with a Lamar Odom-like line of 27 points, 8 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals, and he scored 17 of his points in the fourth quarter.” In another playoff game he had”22 points, 10 in the fourth quarter, plus a game-high 17 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks and 4 steals.” Looks like a true D1 athlete right out of the blocks. Kudos to Coach Arnold….

Roger that, BG!. We started at Pavillion #6, went down to the slightly larger Cabana A/B/C, now back up to the largest “patio” #5. Great job to finally run it down! Hopefully we can get it during the season.

The Tsai-ko “practice tailgate” will be on Saturday, April 17, 2010.
Stand by for announcements from the usual organizers….
Question for all of you smart media and journalism types, why does the guest on the Warrior Beat show sit in the middle of ST and Leila? Is there a good reason for that set-up being better, than the guest sitting to one side and looking at both moderators or interviewres at the same time?
Not complaining, just curious.
pride…brilliant.
a good salesman will always sit opposite of a couple when presenting and never in between.
Na Wahine vs New Mexico State U. sb on WAC live stats Saturday at 5 pm
but isn’t the guest presenting to the audience, the viewers, and not the Princess or ST. The guest is the story, good journalist do not become part of the story, they weave and help tell the story by their questions presented to the guest.
so the guest is front and center, facing his audience, the viewers, well some viewers, most of us can’t seem to get the livestreaming working properly.
