The U.S. men’s national volleyball team, with three players with Hawaii ties on the roster, lost its FIVB World Cup opener to Argentina 3-2 in Fukuoka, Japan, on Tuesday.
“This was a tough match to start the tournament,” U.S. team captain Micah Christenson said after the 25-21, 25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 15-12 loss. “We were not good in the first two sets but we showed fight to push it to the tiebreak. Unfortunately we did not come out on top.”
Christenson (Kamehameha) had a kill and a block when playing the entire match at setter. Erik Shoji (Punahou) was the libero and Micah Ma’a, (Punahou) listed as the backup libber, did not play.
The Americans continue the round-robin tournament today against Italy.
Imho, this coaching staff is among the best in the country. RAM is special like no other. And, how many coaches do you know that speaks pidgin? Just turn off the pidgin when you have to to avoid blank viewer syndrome. She is bi-lingual.
Likewise, this team has the potential to be among the best in the country. They are still far from how good they can actually be.
Coach Angelica might be the most popular and visible associate coach, well liked and respected. Wonder how many languages she speaks? Yep, two for sure.
Meanwhile, the USA men beat Italy in four sets. Redemption time.
Very nice written piece on Hanna Hellvig:
