Mack: "Contact right off the bat"
Head coach Greg McMackin promised that spring training, which begins March 31 will have “contact right off the bat.”
McMackin said he wants to emphasize more physical practices to prepare the Warriors for aggressive run-oriented opponents.
McMackin also said:
• The Warriors will have four scrimmages during spring training.
• The Warrior Bowl will be held April 30 on the UH campus.
• Every practice will end with an overtime-like drill emphasize situations like fourth-and-2, etc.
• Clayton Laurel, who was projected to be the No. 2 left tackle, suffered a broken wrist that will require a rehabilitation period of between six and eight weeks. Chauncy Winchester-Makainai, who was projected to play left guard, will move to left tackle.
* * * * *
As promised, there is open competition at every football position. But for organizational purposes, there are “starting points” (the order of reps). Here are the projected “starting points” for the opening of spring practice (March 31).
Left wideout: Joe Avery, Darius Bright.
Left slotback: Greg Salas, Dustin Blount.
Left tackle: Austin Hansen, Chauncy Winchester-Makainai.
Left guard: Brett Leonard, Andrew Faaumu.
Center: Matagisila Lefiiti, London Sapolu/Bronson Tiwanak.
Right guard: Adrian Thomas, Brysen Ginlack.
Right tackle: Laupepa Letuli, Kainoa LaCount.
Right slotback: Kealoha Pilares, Ryan Henry.
Right wideout: Royce Pollard, Billy Ray Stutzmann.
Quarterback: Bryant Moniz, Shane Austin, Brent Rausch
Running back: Alex Green, Chizzy Dimude.
Of course, when he is fully recovered, Rodney Bradley should be the No. 1 left wideout. UH also is awaiting for word on Laupepa Letuli’s appeal for a medical hardship that will allow him to play as a sixth-year senior in 2010.

At least the current UH basketball assistants will be paid through June 30. The Boise State assistants, who were let go as parting of the coaching change, will draw paycheck only through next week.
Hey! It worked! WassupDoc?
😳
Starting Point!
I hope Jon Lister will get some good reps at RB also
Looks like a “re-re-start” point for the 3rd QB.
…and any new starts for Ass’t. Coaches?
d1島:
It’s furlough week.
Jon Lister will get an opportunity. Everybody will.
how does moniz look
Defense?
RedZone,
Not to get too offensive but….tomorrow.
Interesting that Brett Leonard in penciled in at a guard position as opposed to a tackle position on the left side. 😯
I would think that the praise Leonard received with his footwork would be an indication that agility would be added to the left tackle position.
Kazz:
It’s a next-level situation. They really believe that’s his future position.
how do i view the past warrior beat shows? yesterday’s amis interview didn’t skip at all. hopefully coach arnold’s one is now skip-free.
Good morning Tsai-kos! Happy hump day.
Hansen’s gonna have his work cut out for him then. Not really saying that Leonard is the FAR better choice at tackle, but would be interesting to see how that plays out this spring.
howzit tsaiko country
as jm stated good hump day to all the working peeps today
esmeeee
I like the huge guards on the inside. I would rather see a pass rush from the outside than up the middle. This should also help the running game.
Good Morning All! I hope everyone has a good day. With Salas and Pilares in the slots, and Bradley coming back on the outside, the offense has the potential to put up some great numbers. I hope the O-Line is ready to work hard to help make it happen.
Is “Happy Ooof Day” a bit too much? 😆
top twenty
Whew, made the list
All I gots to say is we are going to be a VERY GOOD team next year. Nine and four? Yup.
Lookin at the depth chart above is very uplifting.
GO WARRIORS!!!
homey! bhf2! Alla youz guys!
Get in here and look at this roster! Aint it purty?!
“Is “Happy Ooof Day” a bit too much? :)”

Spring is here and the thoughts of young males inexcorably turn to mating…
Monsieur Tsai,
Any thoughts as to newcomers who will be challenging to crack the two deeps?
DJmitcho-
Yup, the O-line is gonna be key. I’m predicting that a combination of seasoned players and Coach Shaw’s coaching is gonna pay off big for them.
Like the looks of the o-line.
Austin Hansen at LT is very interesting. He filled in very well at RT,
while previously taking most reps at LG/RG.
Big guards – getting to look like Big 10 line.
Next big center might be Cody K.
Can’t wait for next week.
Hoping that Malcolm Lane will come through for the Fall, but glad to see some other potential stars: Joe Avery, Darius Bright, Billy Ray Stutzmann will get their chance. Of course Royce Pollard, has already proved he can play and Bradley is The Man.
re # 15.
Can always flip flop Austin Hansen and Brett Leonard.
Yup, really looking forward to spring ball.
There is a sense of urgency – the LA guys are coming to town,
not too long from now.
Wow, that’s a big offensive line. Even DPK should be able to run, or walk, behind that offensive line.
ST is the QB position really open to all of them? I still think David Graves is a sleeper. Only 7 more days till we get to see a little action.
as wafan says, “whoo hoo” spring is in the air ( don’t mean the lovey dovey kine ) – football, babeee!
Looking for big things from Darius Bright.
Dayton M reported that coach Gib received 105 tex and voice mail messages on his 5-hour flight to the West Coast.
I thought flight over the Pacific Ocean was a “dead zone” – no incoming or outgoing – how far am I off base? did I get picked off?
Not to mention our All-American slots: Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares. Mahalo to Pilares for filling in at WR last season. Hopefully it will make him a better slot.
Good to see the young Billy Ray in the two deep “starting points” list.
Spring? It’s just Wednesday. 😎
A-house,
They save up while in-flight.
Spring? The evolutionary advantage of being human is that we are always thinking about mating.
With all due respect to our Miami boys, this may be the best WR corps we have ever had.
Thanks, d1. No problem for me as no one calls and I don’t have text capabilities; to complicated for me and I “cheap”!
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
Anyone going to Kani Ka Pila Grill for the Call the Coach Show w/ Mack starting at 6pm?? 16oz draft beer for $3.
Stretch,
Was thinking about it….maybe as the temps get higher today, the allure of the “draft” will be more compelling. 😉
mmmmmmmmmmmmm 16 draft for $3 sounds tempting
pearl citty vs aiea hsball and a cooler filled with 20 12 ozers
choices choices
#22 – Next year?
Good Morning Everyone!!!
The Call the Coach Show is sure tempting! Big incentive to get the stuff done that needs to be done today. Crossing my fingers.

We all know that I’m reffering to next season. Besides that was a mistake which I deliberately planted because I knew it would draw you out from hiding! Hahaaaaaa! 😆
maui warrior: savor the offense for a while. ST needs something to write about tomorrow.
While the RBs looks good, we need someone in the wings.

maybe got to order platform cleats by under armour.
I think this will be a good football season.
Mack is not a dummy, but he had to learn to be a head coach and a lot of the guys on his staff had a lot to learn as well.
It is unblievable what a little experience will do for someone in their job– all of us should think about our jobs and our bosses and what a difference experience makes in what we can accomplish.
Team should be better in every way and some players and coaches– like Gordy Shaw and Arranda, Rolo and Ron Lee should be a lot more confident, make better decisions and execute much, much better.

Morning!
Lewis Walker said that Aaron Brown is healthy & ready to go.
Re UH Football: The third year will be the charm. Hopefully, things will come together and the injury bug won’t show up. Any reports on how Winter conditioning drills have been going? Anyone standing out?
al:
your #65 – would be a positive sign for Coach Gib if he can reach across the mainland and bring him in!
Is 105 a lot of text messages?
I get about 200 a day. Then again, half of them are from UH athletics, ESPN and Kim Kardashian’s tweets.
You guys are really getting me jacked up for football! And with me, it doesn’t take much.
DPK on # 26 – You’re right on the money and I feel the O-Line will be in line for some vindication. With any semblance of protection, Moniz & Co. WILL put up the numbers & make it a lot tougher for opponents. Kiffin, esp. is the type of coach that will run the score up on you if it’s humanly possible. I would love it if
UH turns the tables on him & forces USC to play catch-up. Also woul;d like to see our D pressure their QB into making mistakes. Yeah, I know I may only be dreaming..do me a favor…don’t wake me up.
BaseBows play da Dirtbags today. hehehe. 😆
ahouse…i believe that the gibber will come home with one or two college of southern idaho players. i believe he also hired the current head coach at csi. eh, he could drag a coach from there as well.
Apparently, it was Leonard who requested a move to guard.
*peeks in window*
Anybody home?
hmmmm….. midday clubhouse raid?
Little quiet in the hale.
Dang. Work got in the way…
Sure, look who’s peeking in the window. Next thing you’ll know she’ll ask to clean your carpet.
aaron brown is ripped. huge. even when hes not on the field, around campus in the CAF u can tell he’s got the killer attitude/instinct
Sure more physical practices can prepare you for aggressive run-oriented teams but can they actually do the job come game time?
I hope that Clayton Laurel recovers fully soon and has no lingering effects from his injury during the summer conditioning period. It is too bad that he will miss the spring practices…UH needs a lot of depth in the OL.
This is an opportunity for Chauncy Winchester-Makainai to get extra reps and move up in the eyes of the coaches. Gordy Shaw will be watching him closely, I’m sure.
The pork adobo is the 2nd Entree. The pancit noodle of course would go well with either. They normally have baked potatoes with all the fixin’s, along with the steamed rice. The soft serve ice cream machine allows one to become very creative.
For those who missed my earlier annoucement of our remedial CC session, here is what we are referring to:

OH! You said “Dirt Bags”! I thought you said _ _ _ _ bags.
I was thinking like “why are we playing Fresno State so soon”?
Hi everyone, Stephen, thanks for posting the info on the golf tourney.
Where is Cal, Ron and Dave? Well, they’ll be driving the beer carts of course! And when they are not driving, look for them at the grill (eating or grilling, one or the other) Tony is on the bid list too, just receive confirmation.
The NCAA and UH has given us permission, there will be several players there, not in a golfing capacity, but a very fun capacity! example: drop a few bucks as a donation and a QB will throw the ball and thats where you will tee-off from! Talk about an advantage. Permission to invite players given, permisson to participate given, but not to advertise their names.
Please help us out! If you golf, this is going to be a fun day. If you dont, tell your family and friends. Plus there are really some awesome prizes. UH Football supports what PIAA does, I do hope the tsaiko’s can too. We really need the funding this year, more than ever.

Thanks much,

Can folks just come to the nineteenth hole for watch??
i guess calvin is skipping this season…2010.
Maybe it’s just me but I’m more interested in seeing changes in the pre practice routine for the players. In seasons past many reported as I’ve witnessed as well, the relaxed style of stretching and pre practice sprints and whatnot.
I think at this early on in the year this will have more of a positive or God forbid a negative effect on how we do come fall as opposed to hitting “right off the bat”.
Get well soon, Clayton L.
Can we be sure that’s Calvin from Kona and not his near identical twin, new UH Men’s BBall coach Gib Arnold?
HELP!!!!!
I don’t think anyone has posted this but we need people to sign the petition for faster internet!!!
Vote today at HI-GOOGLE.COM
#92 Pomai…uh, theres a 19th hole? I dont know diddly about golf. Wanna know how bad it is? when Darnell & Eddie were talking about greenies, I asked them if they were talking about Heinekins. Ok, stupid, I know now, but the looks they gave me! hahahaha. Hey anyone who wants to come is welcome to watch, but if you do, please make a donation while you are there!
Maybe Calvin, like myself, is excited about the upcoming*TWO* seasons. Did you guys stop to consider that?
ERASE! ERASE!ERASE!!
Doris ~ May I have your permission to print the flyer that is on your website?
We are having a Tsaiko Cattle Call at Hale Ikena. The Bar & Grill is co-located (how nice) with the buffet area. I will surely be able to post a few flyers at the starter’s/pro shop as well.
Might not be a bad idea if Stretch, Duffer, Whitey and other golfing Tsaiko’s do the same at a course that they frequent.
The site to vote is at: http://hi-google.org/
I had said .com – my mistake.
BUT sign the petition.
DPK ~ We have ways of making him sing!…da true test.
Ho man it feels like football in the air. Looking forward to some good things this year.
Tom Mui ~ What am I ERASING?
When DPK writes, what is there to consider?
Just thinking of it,
My son was born during the magical Sugar Bowl run. Will good fortune run over the team again this year as my wife is pregnant with our second child due in October. I may be just dreaming but hey until the season actually kicks off we are undefeated.
GO BASEBOWS!
Contact Right Off the Bat!
Kekoa, sure, go right ahead. Print up as many as you like. Same goes with everyone else, if you know someone who would like to golf, if you want to leave some at a golf shop, I’d be more than grateful! Thank you Kekoa.
😆
Ho,
Looking at the O-line, get some solid beef and some height. I feel bad for the opposing D-line and our QB. Going have to get thru all that mass and the QB gotta look over those tree’s. What a beautiful thing our O-line can become this year.
I signed the petition, Tom.
kama-
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen the word beautiful associated with an offensive line, but yah, you’re right.
*DPK falls at homey’s feet, weeping tears of joy. “We’ve missed you, buddy”.*
I beg to differ. Offensive line and beautiful go hand in hand.
tommui,
Done!
Hi!
Any one going to disagree with Pride.?
***Severely off topic***
Is it true that “Ring Around The Rosey” song is about the bubonic plague?
What the hell? Is that supposed to be for kids to sing???? 😆
Ask any Umpire! 😉
Kazz,
Lots of ’em have “colorful” histories.
I have to confess.
As a teacher I am kinda dumb. We had a halfday so we could prepare for conferences. Instead, I had kids coming in for additional help and just to sit and talk. Finally asked the kids to leave around 5 and just got home after going crazy to get ready for tomorrow.
Geez, you would think some people would learn not to keep repeating the same error every year. HA!
I disagree with Pride. I’ve seen some ugly things with the offensive line the past few seasons.
Now if we are talking about facial beauty then that’s another topic.
And, the part where “we all fall down!” Hmmmm, make, die, dead.
Kazz, don’t believe what d1 posted.
Kazz . . .
Remember “London bridge is falling down”? It is about the monarchy and imprisonment.
Pride,
Yes. It’s beautiful when our offensive linemen leave opposing defensive linemen crying after a game.
Sad to see the closing of Word Of Life Academy. Will be interesting to see where some of there outstanding athletes end up. I’m sure that there will be a tug of war for a guy like Pauley Asiata, who is a 6-5 285 pound offensive tackle.
I agree with Homey.
Curricula time.
Nytal!
I was looking for words like, devastating, intimdating, fierce, impenetrable, powerful: yah know, things like that, things of that nature…
intimidating even…
Kazz:
The plague connection is a myth. Check it out on Snopes.
There is a defensive tackle at Arizona Western, Jessie Williams, who is 6″4″, 340 lbs. This is the same Jessie Williams who commited to UH a couple of years ago out of high school from Australia. I hope we can get him to come here. He’s rated a a four star player.
I wonder what’s happening w/ T.J. Alofipo?
doesn’t the ilh rule that when one goes from one ilh to another they have to sit out a year?
so it would behoove these athletes from word of life to go to a public school.
I think this case as a little different Al. The kids are not transferring by choice but are forced to find someplace else to go to school. I’m quite sure that the transfer rule would be waived in this case. Could go to O’ahu College or become a Son Of ‘Iolani, if his family could afford it.
….or a parochial school might be more economical
The Dirtbags’ field sounds like it’s similar to what The Les used to be before the new walls went up…a triple delight!
…an Outfielder’s fright.
Yes, that is the same Jesse Williams from Australia. The jury’s still out on his UH future, but based on his dominating play at AWC, he has all the big boys interested in signing him….including the likes of Alabama and Miami.
That might signify Aloha ‘oe or G’day mate for brotha Jesse.
BIK
Hmmmm….
interesting line from another blog on the HA site….
My daughter was also born during the magical Sugah bowl season…..October 6th, 2007 to be exact. In Chinese culture, this was the year of the Golden Boar, a lucky year that comes around every 60 years. 2007 was indeed a magical year for me and my family……and for UH too. Hopefully the next BCS bowl does not take 60 years!

Jesse Williams was just offered a scholarship. His father said so on another board.
Basebows over Dirtbags 8-2. Quality win.
thank goodness he was offered. he said he still has interest hope we can work our magic. cant believe we let him go to begin with.
Mack on call the coach right now.
The *overwhelming* majority of D-IA football head coaches prefer the bowl system over a playoff and actually *like* the BCS system.
93% of head coaches prefer the bowl system over a playoff!
85% like the BCS selection process! This means that the vast majority of coaches in conferences like the WAC, C-USA, Sun Belt, and MAC like the BCS selection process…
Even worse, the University Presidents may like the BCS system more than the coaches.
Although I’ll be coming back into Honolulu from the Stadium Authority meeting around noon tomorrow, I’ll be traveling by bus and won’t be able to get to the restaurant because it’s on a military base.
Re an earlier post from yesterday challenging my use of the terms blog and post: I am no newby to the concept. I first started a blog on July 4, 1999, and kept it going until December 31, 2006, when it jbecame too overwhelming for just one person to keep it going. We had all kinds of high tech stuff going on, but I couldn’t keep up physically or psychologically doing everything by myself.
Accoding to most professionals in the field, the person who creates the blog – such as Stephen’s writing above – is the blogger. What I am currently writing is either a post or a comment; however, I do not consider myself a blogger nor is this post a blog.
However, I do acknowledge that terminology and lexicon will change over time so that some of you may indeed consider yourself a blogger even if you do not have your own site with your own domain name.
Some positive news on the eyeballs – there’s been some significant improvement so any decision about surgery has been moved back until early May. Still cannot drive and still cannot get back into contacts for several more months, but at least things are moving in the right direction. Because the vision changes are so unstable, I can’t even get prescription glasses although I did pick up a couple of pairs of over-the-counter reading glasses at Costco. Now I can read without using a magnifying glass as well – except the darned telephone directory.
Back to work.
Kekoa- it’s cruel that the CC is on Thursday. Like Jason, it’s a school day for me too. Argghh! Going to have to take a raincheck; it’s okay, I’ll be working up an appetite.
el guapo on # 148,
You’re right! And every road win is a thing of beauty, isn’t it? Let’s hope they keep that momentum with Fullerton. That would really help propel them into Conference play.
😳
I guess the rise in temp sent me to Dreamland instead of “drafting”….
Oh well, listening to the rest of Call the Coach.
Protector ~ You should have joined as at the Coach’s call tonite. Broke da mout pupu and great group of Tsaiko’s here.
Are you tuned in tp 1420? If you are you can hear Rob25 telling us to stay away from her with all the exotic sea creatures and animal parts we ordered for the table. The beru is cold and the Hawaiian music in the background is hot.

Where is the Call The Coach show held these days? Still at The Willows or downtown at the Hukilau?
It’s at the Kanikapila Grill in Waikiki.
Coach Mack said he wanted to talk to the team first about the coaching changes before releasing to the public. He will be addressing the team at a monday morning meeting.
W-Doc,
Good to hear that your eyes aren’t as bad as you first thought. Hope there’s a fix available.
Kekoa,
I might make the CC tomorrow.
Wow… This is the latest I got off of work in a while. Missed Call The Coach but hoped our Tsaikotic representatives made some noise.
Great win by the BaseBOWS!!!!
Reminder:
Wahine Softball is the ONLY visible UH sport on TV this weekend.
They open WAC play against SJSU. UH and SJSU are the only WAC teams to surpass the 20 win mark prior to opening conference play.
Live on K5:
Friday at 6pm.
Saturday doubleheader starting at 4pm.
Come by the stadium!
Thanks to softball and those doubleheaders Ill be happy if I never see chili or Skittles again.
Now… if they had SOUR SKITTLES, oh man…. I’d never leave!!!!!
and you’re the only guy i’ve seen choke on skittles 3 times and keep on buying them. Maybe it’s the hand and mouth coordination, or lack of, or just putting too much in your mouth at once and yelling at the same time.
RE: Skittles
I don’t like the grape ones. I really don’t like em. I keep shaking the bag to make sure I eat them first in the beginning and then pound the green and yellow ones at the end.
Like a “happy ending”. 😯
😆
Never heard of the Kanikapila Grill, but then.I’m not much of a Waikiki person anymore now that the theatres are gone. Where is it located? Will there be other Call The Coach shows during spring practice?
what everyone went sleep early tonight?
Helllllloooooo?
Back to watching opera on PBS then…
you mean slot jon mederios won’t be in the lineup. Oh no! I’m kidding. The Greg BigMackin is the second coming of von Appon. I called it three years ago. Can’t have a fat uncle as a coach. Gotta have a credible coach, someone who can recruit and inspire youth. Obviously, Big Mac fails. That’s the way it is. I support UH, I’m alumni, but I won’t buy a ticket to aloha stadium till they put a good product on the field. I know all you guys are gonna tell me I’m not a true fan, I’m a bandwagon fan, but, when you have a poor product, I’m not supporting it and not wasting my money. So you’re nieve to be wasting your money supporting a crap coach. Don’t support the coach, that will eventually get him removed, and hopefully, someday, we’ll get someone like June again. aloha

Warrior Bowl April 30 7pm is also opening night of keed’s play. hmmmmm, tough choice.
I am on land…CC tomorrow…gonna make it…
JM,
I feared the Warrior Bowl’s date from a while ago regardless of the location.
Get Baseball and the Wahine have game one at 6pm against defending WAC champion Fresno State. This will be their last regular season game before the WAC tournament.
Hard to spread one’s self out, but I’ll be taking another week off of work to watch a few days of practice mid April and baseball doesn’t end yet. So softball gets the nod.
Eh… who am I kidding. Would of went to softball regardless. 😎
Kazz ~ You are the ultimate WSB fan. You got your priorities straight dude. Right down to the correct color of skittles.
Warrior Bowl equals practice scrimmage. Whereas, the Softball game pits our Wahine against those pesky, dirt farmers from Fresno. We’re talking WAC standings at stake here.
