VIDEO: Fourth quarter timeline of Hawaii football’s win over Oregon State

Much like in Hawaii’s Week Zero win over Arizona, Saturday’s game against another Pac-12 team, Oregon State, was a tightly contested affair that came right down to the wire.

UH and Oregon State both had chances in the fourth quarter, but in the end, only UH (2-0) made good on one in a 31-28 Rainbow Warriors victory.

Here’s what happened in chronological fashion in what became a kickers’ duel.

The teams entered the fourth tied at 28 after JoJo Ward’s fourth touchdown reception of the game came midway through the third.

UH advanced up to the OSU 10 on a 12-yard Cole McDonald pass to Melquise Stovall. But Miles Reed lost 7 yards on a carry, setting up a 27-yard try from kicker Ryan Meskell.

OSU then advanced the ball to midfield, where it faced fourth and 5. The gutsy Beavers went for it, but quarterback Jake Luton found receiver Isaiah Hodgins for only 4 of the 5 yards they needed.

UH drives up to the OSU 30 this time, thanks to an 11-yard Reed carry. But consecutive incompletions to Cedric Byrd meant that Meskell came on again to try a 48-yarder (which would’ve been a career long). His previous best was 43. This one again had the distance, but …

Oregon State gets ballsy again when its drive stalls — freshman linebacker Darius Muasau made consecutive solo tackles on running back Jermar Jefferson, including the second for a loss of 4. The Beavers go for it on a fake punt on fourth and 6 from their own 34.

UH again drives up into the OSU red zone, and Meskell AGAIN gets the nod. But you know what they say about the third try.

The Beavers are aided by a kickoff out of bounds by Meskell, starting at their 35 with 2:17 left. Luton completes three straight passes up to the UH 34 before missing on three straight balls.

OSU kicker Jordan Choukair was summoned to attempt a 52-yarder as the Aloha Stadium fans — there were over 25,000 in house Saturday — made plenty of noise. Choukair had the distance, but …

McDonald kept it three times, forcing OSU to burn its timeouts. Stan Gaudion punted with 14 seconds left. Jesiah Irish fielded it at the 25 and returned it up to the 37.

The Beavers had time for a desperate final play, managing to lateral it a couple of times and getting up to the UH 45 before they were forced down and out.

UH improved to 2-0 for the third straight season, but this was the first among those they defeated consecutive power-conference teams.

Gosh. Stadium looks so empty. Like a third world tourney going on or something.

Limited the new stadium to 30,000-35,000. ‘Nough.
