Hawaii men’s basketball: Chris Gerlufsen hired as assistant coach
The UH basketball team has filled a key position with the hiring of Chris Gerlufsen as assistant coach. Gerlufsen has worked for three Division I programs in the past two decades, including the last four seasons at the University of San Diego.
> Gerelufsen replaces Adam Jacobsen, who resigned to accept an assistant coach’s job at Cal Baptist. Jacobsen was with the Rainbow Warriors for four years, including the NCAA Tournament run in 2015-16. Jacobsen served as associate head coach the past three years.
> Gerlufsen takes over the offensive coordinator’s job from Jacobsen. Gerlufsen said his preferred style matches the four-out offense the ‘Bows ran the past couple seasons. UH’s offense relies heavily on ball screens and spacing.
> The Toreros and ‘Bows had similar stat lines in 2018-19. USD averaged 72.0 points on 45.5 percent shooting, including 35.1 percent on 3s. UH’s numbers were 72.3 points on 45.1 percent shooting, including 35.4 percent from behind the arc. The difference? The Toreros play in the West Coast Conference, whose membership includes perennial postseason participants Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s and San Francisco.
> Gerlufsen also will coach the perimeter players, help in scouting, and contribute in recruiting. He has been successful in recruiting in Texas, the junior colleges, and internationally.
> Lia Gombar, Gerlufsen’s girlfriend of more than 12 years, is a Kaiser High graduate who was born and reared on Oahu. They met on the “Ninth Island” — Las Vegas.

Watching the rebroadcast of the game on youtube I thought the announcing team was great. The play by play guy (Blackburn?) is a good “set up” (allowing for analysis) and “fact man” (having command of details relating to analysis) all while describing the play while its happening. Plus his voice inflections give excitement. Taylor has technical knowledge of stuff like coverages, fronts, formations and routes. Although his interpretations might seem too “technical” it still comes across as smooth and gets you to notice more things. Neuheisel’s commentary is partly technical like an ex coach. He frames things in a “clear-cut” more perceptible (different from Taylor’s descriptions) way and is a little more opinionated and humorous than Taylor. Good team. That’s why I wish Spectrum could add Kanoa Leahey. Could be way better just like this CBS team. Exciting, technical and funny. Phase III maybe.
A recruiter. Should make everybody a little less ornery.
I thought UH did OK in recruiting. Got some height, some athletes.
Sounds like a good assistant. Talk about recruiting, looks like the wahine vb staff did a fantastic job, so far. The wbb recruits could be a good class too.

Was good. Looked bad at first but ended up seeming pretty good. But a lot of discontent from posters (from all the Hawaii Sports message boards actually) because Ganot’s staff has no “recruiters” (one that can connect with certain types of recruits) that have any personality. We’ll see how this dynamic works, Seemed like Jacobsen was an important piece. Maybe Ganot can start getting toward a Phase II this year.
islandman: Re: polls. Exactly, that’s why it’s misleading to say UH got three votes instead of three points. It’s a common misstatement. I mean no one would say Clemson got 1,594 votes — gee, that would be a very large voting pool. Just an old pet peeve of mine.
Back to the topic at hand: Seems like Ganot got a solid replacement for Jacobsen. Nice to have a fresh perspective and contacts. Waiting to hear from our intrepid (but overworked) reporter to see if the last few members of the team (Ali, DaSilva, Madut) are enrolled in school.

Ganot has a high standard to match, if the WVB team and their recruits keep up close to what they has already done this VB season. This is Robyn’s 3rd season only.
Ganot has done a very good job. It’s always been difficult to recruit great bball players to play over here. He’s done great finding players who can play. No names who can play ball and be competitive.

The UH MBB Big West Tournament results have not met fans’ expectations, after the 2015-16 season.
One and done for 3 years, i think.
The UH WBB team finished the last season seeded 2nd and lost in the BW Tournament championship game.

It seems like there is a cultural shift in the program that may be a pervasive dynamic going forward. Multi national, multi cultural, American, international, local, all over. Different from past years. The base has been established. Year 5. Will be ready for phase II soon. Consistent Tournament team (NIT or even CIT is good) will be the goal as Phase II emerges. Similar to Wallace’s run but in a more “ohana” based, multi-cultural way. Dotted with local players just like Reilly did it. I think it’s happening now. Kind of hard to tell but it seems like it’s starting up. Just got to win more consistently. Can do Coach. Its ready.
14. To get into the men’s NIT, UH mbb has to WIN the conference regular season championship (but lose the conference tournament).
For the women’s WNIT, the highest finishing team in the regular season that is not selected for the NCAA tourney gets an automatic berth. That was the 2nd place (by tiebreaker) Wahine last season.
