Governor’s Ball: Hawaii football team practices at Farrington High

There were two explanations as to why the Hawaii football team practiced at Farrington High’s Edward “Skippa” Diaz Stadium this morning:

1. The Warriors wanted to rest their grass practice field, which has been chewed up with rain and heavy use.

2. “We needed to find out where that mana came from on that last play,” head coach Nick Rolovich said, a reference to defensive lineman Pumba Williams‘ 35-yard sprint to help tackle Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate a yard short of the goal line and preserve the Rainbow Warriors’ 45-38 victory.

And, so, the Warriors filled three buses and made the 6-mile drive to Kalihi to practice at Williams’ alma mater.

“It was great,” said defensive lineman Foi Shaw, a 2018 Farrington graduate. “It was chill. It brought back old memories.”

For quarterback Justin Uahinui, a 2017 Farrington alumnus, it was his first time on that field. The $19.3-million stadium was completed in 2017, with the first game in September of that year.

“It was good to be back at my old school,” Uahiunui said. “For us, it was a regular practice, but it was a little more special.”

Uahinui remembered when the construction forced the relocation of practices. “We started practicing at Kalakaua Park,” he said.

Williams also was back on campus for the first time since graduation in May 2014.

“I used to hate practicing on that (previous) field,” Williams said. “We had ant hills everywhere. We had rocks in the middle of the field. A dirt track.”

But Williams said he was impressed with the new synthetic field and track that allow the Governors to host on-campus events.

At the end of the practice, in what has become an off-campus tradition, Williams, Shaw and Uahinui were asked to sing their alma mater.

“Oh, yeah, best alma mater in the state,” Williams said. “We sang with pride. It was good.”

UH practiced at Saint Louis, Punahou, and Kamehameha in the preseason.

I know it’s due to special circumstances, but I actually kind of like this High School stadium tour that the football team has been doing. I’m not sure if the public is allowed to be at these practices or how this is affected by NCAA rules, but if the high school teams/players are there watching it could strengthen relations with the schools.

    Thank you, Mr. Kapahulu.
By the way, a long, long time ago, the wife and I (and the dog we sneaked in on weekends) lived in Kapahulu. Right on Palani Avenue. Great place. One of our neighbors grew up to be an entertainer (Reno David).

    ST:
Do you remember the early mornings when you could smell the Fresh Bread from Love’s Bakery throughout the neighborhood?

    Kapahulu
    I do. It’s weird, but there’s a Love’s at Middle Street, I think, and I can’t smell anything

Can anyone tell me where I can view UH PPV games in the Waikoloa area?

We need bodies at this game. $4 seats for kids in groups of 20 or more. $8 for kids accompanied by ($15 walk up) an adult. Similar value to watching Avengers (excitement level wise) in theatre when you compare this cost. And much better value than watching Lion King re-do at a theatre. Someone (Athletic Department people) needs to think of something that can work, They really didn’t come up with or do anything creative to help fill seats during past off season. Just Rolo and staff doing “legwork” exposure all summer long all over the place. Matlin needs to help him.

Yes sackkaboya; we really need more bodies at the game–also road games:

Come join our Road Warrior group at games at UW, Reno and UNLV; and sit with other UH fans and families of our current players at the 50 yard line right behind our beloved Warriors; with the families of Cole McDonald, Justin Uahinui, Jason Matthew-Sharsh, Kanai Picanco, Derek Thomas, Ben Scruton, etc. However, our group at UW is in the upper deck across our team bench due to the lack of availability of seats for our group size.

Our group is 450+ at UW and 500+ at UNLV; and come join our tailgates and meet your fellow diehard fans!

Future UH opponents on TV today (all times PST):

Rice at Army, 3pm, CBS Sports Network
Purdue at Nevada, 6:30pm, CBS Sports Network
Oklahoma St at Oregon St, 7:30pm, FS1 (Fox Sports)

    And tomorrow (Sat Aug 31):
Boise St at Florida St, 9am, ESPNews
Eastern WA at Washington, noon, Pac12Net
Fresno St at USC, 7:30pm, ESPN

Fresno State at USC and Boise State at Florida State should be interesting. A good chance for the MWC to get a couple more wins against Power 5 schools. I think Nevada beating Purdue might be a bit of a stretch though. Of all teams this season though I really hope UH can pull an upset over Fresno. UH pretty much owned them during the Jones and McMackin years, but it’s been so one sided since.
