Putting the pro in program
While I imagine each of the basketball candidates who interviewed for the UH job is smart and very capable, there seems to be a lack of the “wow” factor.
Maybe it has to do with the preference that the candidate have mostly a college basketball background. But I think it would have been nice for the call to go out to more coaches with pro basketball experience.
It worked 11 years ago, when UH hired June Jones, a two-time NFL head coach who had one year of college-coaching experience. Of the many changes Jones made, the most important was implementing a system designed to helping players get to the next level. Jones emphasized pass blocking and attacking defenses — tools attractive to NFL scouts. Jones also set up practice schedules and workouts that mirrored the ones used in the pros. Those changes improved recruiting. Deep down, every football recruit harbors NFL dreams.
It’s the same in basketball. A wise basketball insider told me that recruits ask these questions:
• What style do you run?
• Can you help me get to the next level?
• Who’s your shoe company?
In hiring a coach, the second-most-important W is wow.
* * * * *
Somebody at UH came up with a great suggestion: Pair the women’s exhibition between UH and Arizona as part of a volleyball doubleheader with the men’s match between UH and Long Beach State. The Wahine fans would help pump up the enthusiasm for the Warrior match.
Somebody at UH said it would be better to separate the two events.
The women’s match, we’re told, has sold about 1,000 tickets as of yesterday.
* * * * *
My bad. I incorrectly wrote that Stephanie Ricketts has two complete games this year. She has two shutouts.
My apologies.
Foist!
Wow!
Too!
Molokai has a contribution to the NBA…is he interested in applying?
Why not pair the VB games???
Oh wait..2X beer sales, 2X parking fees, 2X Nachos……..
Geez, I read through all of last night’s posts before coming here and I’m still top 5 (I think)? 🙂
Ahhhh…the day after all that Corned Beef and Cabbage, it’s a good thing the tradewinds are a-blowin’ 😯
Steph pitched a gem last night. Ladies hit when they had to. Feilding was good. An almost perfect game. Wotta way to start the tourney. Go Lady Bows!
Jason…you do realize it’s the day after St Paddy’s Day. ’nuff sed. hehehe

Idn’t that spaaashul! 😆
ST,
That would just make too much sense for UH to have the doubleheader even though the Women’s fans would get to see how exciting a men’s match is and vice versa. It would be a great idea, but what do you expect from UH.
I agree with you and the wow factor would have came in the form of a “Jellybean.” He definitely would have brought that the SSC. I liked him because of three factors:
1) International recruiting ties: Europe & Japan (Japan is important especially if we want to upgrade conferences)
2) Played professionally and has coached at many different levels
3) He’s Kobe’s Dad and Kobe endorses/loves his Dad (unlike the Bibby’s)
Recruits who wouldn’t even consider UH would actually listen if a Jellybean gave them a call.
But hey, that’s just me. JD looks to have done a good job with DTD and Charlie Wade, so I have faith in him.
ah. d1 speaking of which.
true story…
yesterday, i am at the airport terminal in honolulu awaiting a flight out to maui. i ask the ticket agent about the next flight out and she cuts one loose.
it was one of those silent but violent varieties. needless to say we all vacated the area immediately, quicker than a terrorist attack would.
poor girl she was so embarassed.
later, we all had a laugh. one of those eye to eye contact burst of laughter.

Idn’t THAT spaaashul! 😆
st…seems to me that you could always get a job as an asst ad.
Not quite true about NBA/NFL systems in college.
Teams running the triple option like Georgia Tech, and the spread option like Florida and Oregon, are successful at recruiting and winning. But they do not run “pro” systems.
Same with basketball. BYU just beat Florida using a system that passes for the best shot, and lots of successful college teams run deliberate half court offenses, like Gonzaga and Utah State, with players that are not looking for an NBA career or an NBA system. Washington State and Derek Low ran a slow down offense at WSU. Boise just fired a coach with what the AD called a “flashy offense” so they could hire a coach with a more disciplined style.
al, I was working for a publishing company. They hire a new publisher. Doesn’t have her office set up yet, so she uses the computer next to me. First time I walk into “our” office, first time I ever meet her, and the whiff hits me. Whoa.Dude. OMG, I start feeling dizzy. Sharp bean flavor.
She gives me the crinkle-face eye brow furrow look. Does his smell that?
You betcha.
Yes, the NBA game, which used to mandate man-to-man defense, is different from college.
But I still think Jellybean is the best choice of all the folks mentioned so far. If UH is out of the college box, unique, toughest job in DI hoops, then you gotta think out of the box for this hire.
Jellybean has coached college, pro, international. His kid is one of the two greatest players alive today. Worldwide publicity. If I was a good baller, and Kobe called me and said come play for my dad and I’ll watch and follow and support your college career, I’d come to UH in a heartbeat.
You wanna talk business support? Think Kobe don’t got friends? Think Jerry Buss wouldn’t make a donation?
But Kobe said it “If they are smart enough to hire him.” Unfortunately, we ain’t that smart.
manoa mist…
the worst bombers are the ones on those across the pacific flights to the west coast.
talk about entrapment.
FAIR BALL!!!!
(ok… whew.. now I’m over it.)
manoa mist:
I’m with you on “think outside the box” and interview Jelly Bean – what’s there to lose except some time if JD decides to move into another direction.
Must agree on the “potential” benefits if he is hired! Know for sure that Midori7 would be happy to see and get Kobe’s pic and autograph. Same for all the Lakers fans in Hawaii.
Stephen,
I apologize for taking the conversation afoul, so to speak.
manoa mist…
those are excellent points regarding joe bryant.
i have been saying all along what recruit and/or recruit parent would not allow kobe’s dad a home visit.
no matter what, success is built around the talent that you bring in. in basketball there is no margin for error in recruiting. with but 4-5 recruits at most per year you gotta have the talent coming in every year.
if joe bryant is serious about the uh job he should be calling jd and every committee member to express his desire and to offer who he would couple with to aide him in the nuances of the ncaa rules and regs. that to me would be one big selling point that he would bring on board a proven ncaa assistant who would help him in the compliance department.
(i suppose the same would go if jarrin akana [are you listening] would apply.)
…nuff said
ST,
That was a pretty quick game last night huh?
Maybe I’m reading too much into this but Coach Coolen said of Rodriguez’s energy in that she’s a fighter and that not to many other girls on the team show that, you think it was to spark up the other players or just a simple honest comment?
Top Twenty-Five
barely made it, whew!
If they are not going to go with the bean and after looking at the ones they have interviewed maybe they should also look at Isaac Chew.
Sorry, continuation – “run it like a business” – if that’s the mandate from upper campus, the “business” potential far surpasses all the other candidates for the job as none could possible match the ” business income potential” of a “Jelly Bean” (with all due respect)!!!
kazz
why are you belaboring the point?
fair or foul, the homerun or not to be a homerun would have been/is inconsequential to the final outcome of the game.
they won didn’t they?
and besides you didn’t ask her.
did st. mary’s play today?
Anyone know how old Joe Bryant is?
st mary’s is up 59-50 in the second half.
I was ready to start the Bill Laimbeer bandwagon.
Trouble was there was no driver.
Or passengers.
Or wagon, for that matter.
I guess it would be just me, on the sidewalk, waving at an empty street …
Steph was her usual self again. Finding her rhythm again after getting worked a bit from some rough competition but honestly she worked through it. Still believe that while she and Parnaby are sharing ACE duties, Ricketts is gonna have to be in top form to be the one solid “constant” on the mound. Nothing against Parnaby because she’s pretty damn good herself, but Ricketts has been there before against the same conference opponents last season. Parnaby will be the nasty surprise our WAC opponents will have to deal with also, but Ricketts gotta be the “glue” to hold our pitching together.
Speaking of conference opponents, SJSU comes in here next weekend to start WAC play and they’re boasting a VASTLY improved 20-5 record. Most of the WAC have improved their records from last season. It’s gonna be tough. REAL tough.
Al,
I’m just saying. I went over that clip about four times. J-Rod was robbed. The yellow ball “fuzzed” on TV as it hooked left and crossed BEHIND the same plane of space as the white foul pole. The yellow orb would not have been distorted had it past the front of the white pole. Of course it doesn’t put a damper on the fact that they won, but hey… I’m just pointing it out… Just throwing it out there. 😎
No worries. I’m not a coach or a player so I can moan about it forever. Now if I was a coach or a player… THEN get problems.
Laimbeer? Gee, doesn’t UH already get a “rap” from the officials in football for “thuggish behavior”?
Good mid morning Tsaikos…wow…top 50.
WHO da guy ????
” … SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Chargers have traded third-string quarterback Charlie Whitehurst to the Seattle Seahawks.
Whitehurst has never thrown a pass in the NFL and has played in only two games, both as a rookie in 2006. Yet Seattle swapped its second-round pick in next month’s draft, allowing the Chargers to move up 20 spots to No. 40 overall, to take San Diego’s 60th choice.
The Seahawks also gave San Diego a 2011 pick, believed to be a third-rounder….”
Man, that’s giving up a lot.
I read that Jelly Bean is 60.
So he comes aboard, gets the program on its feet and is pau in 5 years or so.
I wonder if his age is the real issue?
ST ~
How many tickets have been sold to the MVB game on Friday? including the season ticket holders…
oh no. Davy Crockett passed away.
55 yrs old
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Bryant
dpk….don’t believe everything that you read.
Kazz:
We wil support your position that J-Rod was “robbed” of the homerun!
From watching the replays, the ball went behind the white pole as the yellow ball was “hazy” as it turned left. If it went infront, as al says, the white ball would not have been fuzzy, but stark against the white pole.
kazz
i am just pulling your leg…this week.
hahaha.
nice handle for jenna rodriguez…j-rod. good one.
now, seriously, about that cf………..?
Tony Akpan will be playing in the IBL team in Central Oregon this season.
Jelly Bean and age:
Best I know, knowledge does not dissapear with age; rather the more experienced the person the more knowledge he/she seems to have.
Even if he stayed only 5 years, it could be an economic boom for UH.
Any “gimmick” status placed on his hire is media driven by other schools who may be “jealous” that UH really made a fantistic decision and one which they wish they could have.
Good morning everyone!
Wow…top 50 and I already worked two restaurants, three islands, and one farm with Maryann(e) this morning… 🙂
dating maryann(e) these days huh?
Wasn’t me that came up with “J-Rod”. I think her friends in the stands started yelling for a while now and stupid me only put two and two together recently.
Oh and yes our centerfielder is something else. Interesting choice of sporting #00. You don’t see that too often. You also don’t see a complete player like Majam too often either.
55?!
Can’t believe that age would be an issue…
A-House,
I joked to Ralph last night after that play that Coolen would be up early at UH spray painting those foul poles a more distinctive color.
Then again… Who knows????? 😯
#46 A-House
Well said, sounds like a good way to go.
I thought Puu-Warren made a really nice throw from the right field to get the out.
Joe Bryant is a BIIIIIG Man!!,(6’10”) built like a big-o-TE, and looks like he could still play a pretty good game of bb still yet.
jellybean joe…was a very talented guy back in the day. not too many guys 6’9″ could handle the ball like he did and he would go outside often to drill those long range jumpers.
he was the kind of player you needed on the court that would do the things necessary to win. always a team guy.
he could play any position.
Mr. Al,
Re:#48
SteveM and I are not dating.
I pay him a stipend for his surprisingly outstanding horizontal services.
Now excuse me while I shave my legs and knuckles.
maryann(e)
RedZone,
Oh yeah! That 9-3 play or was it 9-2? Either way, no can get away with that in baseball. Was worried a bit because Pu’u-Warren had to throw unbalanced on the run off her back foot.
We’re gonna need plays like that again tonight. CAL is gonna look for revenge but they can take it all out on Lipscomb at 3pm before they play us at 5pm.
The outfield has been consistent all year long with some quibs early on but once Aguirre got that left field spot it was pretty cherry already. Pu’u Warren may not be as fast as Aguirre and Majam, but she’s been steady at right and if need be Majam can help her out quickly.
But yeah tonight, Grimes is gonna have to play one of her best games and she GOTTA get support from the infield.
Me thinks Ricketts is gonna start at 5pm and then Parnaby again at 7pm.
Would be surprised if J-Rod makes a pitching start during this round-robin style tourney.
REMINDAH:
Wahine Softball (19-9) versus #13 CAL 5pm
Wahine Softball (19-9) versus Lipscomb (20-3) 7pm

***Interesting to note that in all their ranked glory, the CAL Golden Bears have the SAME record against ranked teams as us, Fresno State, and San Jose State. Their loss to Lipscomb is another notch on the bedpost of opponents they’ve lost to that have received votes in the Top 25. STILL… a opportunistic team are the Golden Bears and one cannot underestimate that PAC 10 ***ahem*** “pride”.

ST,
When you come down to cover the games tonight, you should ask them if they can put nacho cheese on your hotdog.
Last night, I got my hot dog and was talking to someone in line when the lady interrupted me and asked if I wanted nacho cheese on that. At first I was like “no”, then gave in. It was great.
maryann(e)
are you referring to something like this in your post #56?
http://www.marycy.org/verticalmain.html
The problem is Jellybean Bryant would be too easy and logical choice to pick. JD came bit after fabulous five excitement. He is smart and wants to win. But Hawaii is a different ball game. You need an enigmatic JJ type who had NFL playing time and head coach in the NFL with a flair for the outrageous, “One day I will play a game with every play a pass”. “No one can stop my run and shoot.” Outrageous! Yes sir! The late great Hawaii Islander Carlos Bernier screaming and yelling at the umpires for bum calls jumping up and down like Michael Jackson’s dancing. Outrageous! But fun fun fun! Jellybean letting one of his guards take a 50 foot hook shot like Meadowlark. Outrageous! Fun, fun, fun. JJ telling recruits, “I played and was head coach in the NFL and I can help you get there”. Outrageous! You bet, but Fun, fun fun! Jellybean telling recruits, “I played almost 10 years in the NBA, I can help you get there. Also my son may come here once in awhile and give you recruits some tips.” Outrageous! You bet! But fun, fun, fun! Come on JD. Abe Saperstein did it. Had sellout crowds! The HG played serious BB in their inaugaural years and beat everybody they played. Outrageous! But fun, fun, fun! When they decided to clown around, Outrageous! Yes. But fun, fun, fun! Common, JD. You need to find a way to bring fans back to the Stanley. Jellybean is younger than JJ and Big Mack attack. He’s not old. Clown Prince of Baseball Max Patkin got his start in Hawaii. Let’s let Jellybean get his “start” in Hawaii. Go Warriors/Rainbows. Let’s allow Bryant to launch some JellyBombs! Outrageous?
HOYA SAXA!!
Sorry — I’ve was elsewhere booking air to Seattle this summer. My niece is getting married on July 17 in Seattle and mom said I will attend. A-House can relate to this…”You are invited and will attend”, but I digress…
…unhappy about wasting all that airfare, I booked an Alaska cruise around it. Same ship and itinerary as jm2375’s cruise last summer. 😐
No…but, hiring her to farm is economical because no need a tractor and fuel.
rupert…..carlos bernier?
you kind of old eh?
no forget the full wad of chew that was his trademark besides the homers.
but that is not what she said.
on another note…
is it my imagination or are we experiencing a lot more house fires than usual these days?
we all should be doing fire prevention inspections on a regular basis.
is it my imagination or are we experiencing a lot more traffic fatalities than usual these days?
we all should slow down and quit being in such a rush to get there. not to mention refraining from driving while under the influence.
…and a lot more kids on the streets this week.

I’m taking some of the shine off Sailor Blue’s claim to fame by posting this before he does….USC tailgate at Cabana A!!! &%*@ Navy took all of the upper sites and cabanas B & C were taken before Sailor Blue flashed to the rescue and docked us at cabana A. We’ll try for the “other” sites for the rest of the home games. We do have the upper site for the practice T-Gate.
ST told you that Majam was a “5 tool player”. But, didn’t you tell me that she was a 7 tooler? You know…hit for average, hit for power, run, catch, throw, good looks and great personality… BTW, how come you didn’t ask her if Coolen is recruiting her younger sisters?!!!
SteveM
I saw Princess Cruise Alaska trip from Vancouver. 7 days, one way, for about $850 pp. Is this a good price? I know you’re going to ask me the travel dates and I can’t remember exactly…but was June-July…prime time. Was listed with MWR.

Good sense of humor, Michael…
But, people often say “start at the beginning”…and so we should have a “pro” before we can get the “gram”.
OK, sounds like I need my senior afternoon nap before the Wahine come on at 1700. BBL
One last post before I take my nap…
Ho, NSF! You and Sheila coming to the practice TGate? Man, we missed you two this past season!
In my line of work “NSF” means “insufficient funds”.
BG…that’s on the planner right now..barring ay new events that might take us away…looking forward to that practice and this saturday..genji?
BG,
Majam’s younger sister signed with Northwestern.
The problem with “Jellybean” is that he doesn’t have a track record of some success at the highest level like June Jones did in the NFL. I agree that it would be fun to see how a Jellybean coached team would perform here. However, it is not our legacy that is on the line for this hire. If you look at it from JD’s point-of-view, would you really go out on a limb and hire Jellybean? If the experiment failed, JD would definitely be ridiculed for the Jellybean hire when there other more qualified but less “fun” candidates available.
Kazz
That’s been bothering me too, when I write a post. May have to suggest change to NorthShoreWarrior!!!

Blue Powder, we’ll never know unless we try. Yes Northshorefan, Carlos was entertaining. That big wad almost reached first base LOL. If by a miracle we got a Rick Pitino type here, it still would not guarantee wins. JJ never had a winning record as HC in the NFL. It was his tongue in cheek enigma that helped UH turn its football program around. His name as a former pro player and HC that attracted recruits. Rick Pitino types would still have a hell of a time recruiting 3, 4, 5 star players. But with Jellybean having the JJ rep for playing in the Bigs, and imparting that to recruits, that makes a big impression to lure recruits. We are not normal. We are in the middle of the Pacific. Name value means a lot to get players wanting to risk coming here.
I hear you Mr. Rupert. I just don’t think someone in JD’s position would risk hiring a somewhat out-of-the-box candidate as his first major hire. I do like the thought, but I understand why JD would not want to go there.

D.J. Cooper. That kid is having the game of his life against the Hoyas. My bracket is in flames!
Kazz..if we had gone to Monday night’s game, that last one would apply. We went on Saturday and dat was one good one. We enjoyed that one although we lost … but was good.
Me not expecting too much with mbb for about 2 years. New coach is going to be hamstrung the first year again. Late decision, not time to put together a staff or recuit list, no time to make good analysis of what’s needed. Me thoughts the deadline for apps was Friday but seems the applications deadline is open ended…really? Tells me JD going be flying all over da place to interview people. Some of these applicants will be tied up with post season for a while and some won’t know if they still have a job at the end of post season. New coach might have less than two weeks before LOI day..
Count me as one who believe that Kyle Smith should get the job. Heck, St. Mary’s got 5 Australians on the team and they are all pretty good and can shoot the ball. I bet that Smith was the one who got all those recruits.
Australia has a lot of pretty good basketball players, i.e. Luc Longley, Andrew Bogut, Andrew Gaze (Seton Hall), Patrick Mills, etc. Plus, Hawaii has had some success in getting recruits from down under for women’s basketball and women’s softball so I just think it’s a natural for us to get players from Australia, plus even New Zealand and parts of Asia. If Smith gets the job he should get an assistant coach who can recruit on the mainland. Anyway, that’s my two cents. If Donovan chooses Arnold I will never buy UH basketball tickets while he’s coaching. One Arnold was one too many. Sorry, that’s the way I feel. He set the program back at least 5 years if not more.

Ralph: I think I said it before, it’s not Bpew with a P, it’s still Brew with an R. The character he uses (ρ) is the Greek letter rho, it looks like a P but it’s equivalent to our R. If he wanted a P, he would have used π (pi).
Sorry, but seeing “Bpew” bugs me. Must be a math/science thing. 😀
(Although, technically, the omega he uses for W is more closely equivalent to a long O …)
the ohana is going to men’s VB tomorrow night 🙂 the beast and friends to make an appearance. all conference week winner Tommy Pestolesi plays for Long Beach, whose mom is Diane Sebastian and dad is Tom Pestolesi. both are former UH student athletes from the ‘hey days’ of Shoji.

I’ve viewed sports not only as having winners but entertaining too. I can understand the thinking of going out of the box to hire an unorthodox person. And JD is too smart for that. But in the back of my mind I can’t help thinking what it would be like. When Red Rocha recruited guard Gary Gray during the Fab Five era, Gary was not a great starter but oh could he handle the basketball. Just like HG Curly Neal. Red is smitten with players like that. It’s the entertainment side of him. Remeber those Fab Five shorts? Jellybean is not a joke. He would not embarass JD and the UH. Nearly 10 years in the NBA, that’s no accident. The Pro Bowl does wonders for Hawaii’s economy, free exposure for our state, just like ESPN broadcasts helps UH football get exposure and help recruiting. Bo Belinsky helped lure crowds in the termite palace when he pitched. Jellybean just on his NBA career and association with Kobe is publicity money can’t buy. But your right Blue Powder. We won’t get him. We’ll take the safe route and hire a safe hire.

Women’s and men’s use different heights… 20 minutes before the two teams can start warming up? When they have double header basketball (women and then men’s)… the men come out for warm ups about 10 minutes after the women leave the court. and there is about 30 minutes to 40 minutes before they start the intros and national anthems, etc. Also who would play first? Men’s real match or Women’s exhibition…
Hi Gib. If you recruit a Harvey Harmon who falls flat on his back like Curly Howard use to do just from the opponent breathing too hard on him to draw the charge. If you get a forward who pulls down the shorts of the opponent when he gets too close. If you get a Gary Gray who handles the BB like Curly Neal I promise to turn out for every game. If you come dressed as the Big Bird I promise to buy season ticket for at least 3 seasons straight. See what your getting yourself into, crazy fans like me. Good Luck Gib. JD loves See’s candies. Might work as an incentive LOL. Hana Hou, Go Warrior Bows!
Awesome game of Sled Hockey at the Para-Olympic Games in Vancouver, BC, between the US and Japan. Talk about upper body strength! Would hate to be on the receiving end of a push by these guys. Dang.
Whoo-hoo!!! 2-0, US, 1st.
Go Wahine!!!
Player like David Thompson who had a 48″ vertical would excite me.
Or a big man like Hakeem da Dream.
Ripper Colins would spit at the refs.
3-0, US. ~2 minutes in the 2nd.
4-0, US. ~1 minute in the 2nd.
Go Lehigh!
Go Montana!
GO WAHINE!!!
Me go, too….Hasta la vista…Esme & out….
I think Ripper Collins would spit on a lot of people in the front few rows. Lower bowl seats would become the cheap seats.
Nytal.
Ripper Collins was a great villian. But super nice in person. Passed away long time ago. How about Meadowlark Lemon as HC. Okay, okay he is too old. I am gone. My old body needs vertical rest.
Will the real Gib Arnold please stand up, please stand up, please stand up. Actually being related to Benedict is pretty funny.
I say bring in Arnold as Jellybean’s top assistant and protege to take over when Jellybean retires in 5-10 years.
The Lakers already have a relationship with UH – I first saw Kobe play in person at the Stanley – got my $65 ticket’s worth in warm-ups as he put on a show slamming and all.
Buss could be the UH donor we have long sought. Think Magic wouldn’t take an interest? I hear he’s been pretty successful in business. LA has always been Hawaii’s team, now Hawaii could be LA’s team.
And talk about an Asian connection with UH, do you remember the Olympics? Kobe Bryant was mobbed every time he went out in public. The Chinese loved him. We could get any Chinese all-star baller we wanted.
Of course, if this didn’t work out, I remove myself from any liability.
But if I was JD, again, I’d at least interview the guy.
CAL’s base running ability is taking advantage of our infield issues more than anything.
Na Koa Update
UH Football sustainability news!!!!!
Mahalo to the Watson Family. They assembled at Bachman Hall today to fully fund an endowment to provide scholarship $$ for a football player every year.
This is the third endowment for the Warrior Football program and all three within the last year.
All of you looking to provide sustainability for Warrior Football players, get a tax break as an individual , create a mechanism in your company for philanthropic reasons or just plain tax sense, or perhaps just to feel good, consider a gift to the Warrior Football endowment.
And yes I will keep after it until 03.31.2010
Jenna uP.
Seems Iwata had no clue this last at bat…looks like guessing at pitches..
Cal base running is awesome!..I like the scheme…stop me if you can….so far we can’t…
Cal’s pitcher is Good!..love the breaking stuff. Wicked….
Come to UH Gib!
5 – 0 … 17k’s..great performance. Na Wahine struggled but…got to get ready for the next one..
GO NA WAHINE!..
Al – Man, the airport girl you talked about, what a CLASSIC story. She dropped a George Ariyoshi on you huh, a QUIET but EFFECTIVE. Love it.
Basketball Coach – Gib Arnold the front runner? PLEASE! Seems like he is, but PLEASE!
Jim Donovan – Well, if things go thru they way it looks like it’ going thru, then, well, my perception of our Athletic Director will have DRASTICALLY changed. You cannot tell me Gib Arnold’s the best guy for the job. Jelly Bean, others WAY more qualified….I mean no interview for a guy like Jelly Bean by the Chaminade dude gets time in front of the committee. Wow, sure seems like the fix is on. What happened to a “transparent” process?
Ha ha – still can’t believe Al went face to face with a lady who “cut one”, “slacked” one, blew her backside….LOVE IT.
My dad would do a great job. He made me into the player I am today. I aint so bad right? Get my Dad on board and I will help recruit. You think parents would have me in their homes. Feel me baby?
Now that is what I call a leadoff batter. Homerun for Majam.
RIP Fess Parker, aka Davy Crockett. Make sure ya play the video.

Is that you?! Say something only Kobe would know to prove it!
aka Daniel Boone.
I got two Vanessas.
Go Figure that one out… Yo
de ja vu another homer for you.
Majam in the 3rd.
Holy crap that was some serious mana from Majam.
At least the tennis players have a nice souvenir. 😎
Homerun for Gonzo. Again.
It is the Majam Gonzo show.
You have got your position over a lot better than I ever might, many thanks!
yup, i did get hit with the silent slammer. whew. i mean phew.
yah, i know many of you out there are a bit disappointed with the current applicants for the head basketball coach’s position. but, hey, it is what it is.
here’s copy of my earlier post:

for what its worth…
how can one expect to attract any big name coaches with our mid major money?
we all want the best for the university of hawaii, but, you get what you pay for?
you can’t buy chateau lafite on a morgan david budget.
1982 chateau lafite magnum…..$7450.00
200? mogan david concord…….. $3.99
Regarding # 145
Kobe, wasn’t it your dad who advised you not to get married so young?
Regarding # 144
You said “the fix is on”. Would you please elaborate?
SB should hire the person who created this – hilarious.

momona
did you create that?
Don’t make fun of Lehigh. They can beat UH easily. Great games today.
Loved it that Notre Dame, Georgetown, and Marquette went down. Villanova escaped, barely. The Big East didn’t come to play today. I loved the way Washngton plays…up and down the court. Full speed. The player of the day I thought is Jimmer Fredette of BYU with 37 points. The guy is just so smooth and a scorer. He makes shooting free throws so easy too. Buzzer beaters by Murray St., Wake Forest, and Northern Iowa. Man, it’s so exciting. Can’t wait til tomorrow. My sleeper team, Butler, is moving forward.
al – I’m not that creative.
Farewell to Fess Parker. I owned a ‘coon skip cap, buck shirt, rubber knife and tramped through the hedges when I was in elementary school. The show was on live then. 🙂 I bought the DVD set a few years back.
One of my favorite stars…ranked up there with the 3 stooges and Lucy. 😆
How often do you write your blogs? I enjoy them a lot 4 9 2
I guess as long as we don’t end up with Ripple.
Derek,
I know someone who got his degree from Lehigh, and I don’t like KU. Good first half.
Fun watching the wahine play VB! Da kane tomorrow…it’ll be eye opening… 🙂
Old Diver (#161)
Regarding “Fix is on”…..
Well, here’s what I hear…..
On the morning of the day Jim Donovan fired Bob Nash, he raised about half of Nash’s salary, approximately $120k, word is, that money was provided by “Punahou” checkbooks. I mean that word starting spreading even before the news conference of Donovan’s announcement.
Then, JD announces his “Advisroy Committee”, DAMN, pro Punahou like we’ve never seen before.
Hence, the FIX IS ON to hire a Punahou guy.
HHHHMMMMMM
Don Weir,
Wow! Good news on the new scholarship! Thanks for keep plugging away. We’ll miss you when you are gone.
To Rupert, chopsueyboy, wafan & others,
We might have to have a future cc for Tsaikos to reminisce about 50th State Wrestling, the Islanders & Roller Derby, etc. I loved that era. Handsome Johnny Barend, Curtis “the Bull” Iaukea, Ripper Collins, the Masked Executioner, etc. were among my favorites. But don’t forget Hans Mortier, Bearegarde, Fuji (Fuj the Stooge) Fujiwara, and so many others. And to those that mentioned the Islanders, do any remember when Winston Llenas was locked in a battle for the PCL batting title and narrowly lost to Bobby Valentine, I think? Memory is fading but I think Valentine played for Spokane?
For the wow factor, we definitely should check up on Magic Johnson (per Manoa Mist). Who knows; he might have the itch after all this time. Or, how about Larry Bird? Ha-ha. Must be late as I’m dreaming big. Why not. You might get surprised by the response (e.g., June Jones).
[…] more here: The Warrior Beat| UH football, University of Hawaii athletics … Categories: Calling Pro Tags: been-nice, head-coach, jones, more-coaches, nfl, […]
I got myself so excited about dreaming big that I had to e-mail Jim Donovan about it. Ha-ha. Well you never know. Would June Jones have coached at UH if we didn’t pursue him?
Nitey Nite and Sweet BB/SB/VB Dreams!
Magic Johnson wow now that would be a “wow hire” instead of Kobe Bryant’s father.
But I doubt Johnson would be interested 🙁
Hard for me to believe that the Redskins would consider drafting Tebow with Colt Brennan in their pocket. If they draft anyone, Colt is as good as gone. The Redskins would look foolish if they cut a high draft pick.
Now might be the time to bring Colt, Bess, Grice-Mullins, Rivers, & JJ together in Miami. Ha-ha…another foolish dream.
vballfan1,
You never know. June Jones was a long shot; but, we snagged him away from the Chargers. You gotta dream big. Nothing’s impossible.
Larry Bird is busy running the Pacers. *sigh* I really hope he can rebuild that once-proud franchise. I had to relive the glory days by watching the 30 for 30 feature this past Sunday.
BG,
I’ll have to check out MWR regarding the Alaska cruise. My better half really likes the idea.
Thanks Jason. I hadn’t heard about Larry Bird for awhile so I thought he was out of coaching. Okay, who else besides Magic? Jabbar doesn’t seem to have the personality…probably a little too old. Who are the NBA coaches that like to visit the islands? Wilt Chamberlain would’ve qualified if he was younger.
protector, rupert, chopsueyboy, wafan & others….come on now how could you forget the islander that won the batting title … carlos bernier
I checked out Henry Bibby’s coaching stints but he was cut loose too many times. Interesting fact: He was the head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA but was fired after only 28 games and was replaced by his assistant, Joe Bryant.
BG— yup, lot of factors like which summer month, inventory of cabins, and whether the taxes, port fees, and Alaska $50 tax is included (I think Alaska charges a separate tax for cruise ship visitors). I am sure the MWR price is competitive.
My un-expert observation is that the cruise you describe is usually lower priced than others doing a round trip from the same port. A 7-nt one way is usually between Vancouver/Seattle and Seward (Anchorage). This one goes up through the inside passage and continues on up (and the reverse). It is usually associated with a land tour component that goes inland for 3-6 days. However, the cruise-only segment is also sold separately for those not taking the land tour. Tom Mui did a similar one last summer and I think las vegas did the cruise only component once.
Several cruise lines does this itinerary… Princess, Royal Caribbean, Holland, Celebrity to name a few.
TGIAF!!!
Early night for everyone.
Looks like Dan Hawkins will not be starting his son at QB to start this season, unlike the previous 2 seasons when Tyler Hansen took over midway through the season after Cody Hawkins struggled.
Aloha Kakahiaka!
Colt would look good in Viking Purple and Gold!
It’s gonna be a nice victory when UH goes into Folsom and beat the buffs like a rug.
BIK
Good morning…
Happy belated birthday Esme and many, many more!!
Great Morning All!
Howzit Mrs. LTUHF!
Many more applications for the UHAD to go thru….maybe there’s more upside left in the UH MBB program than meets the eye?
Whaaaaat??!!, still no HC/bb selection yet??
Will check back in another couple hours….fingers crossed.
Good Morning TSAIKOS!!
Let’s hit da big 200.
HAPPY BELATED 29th ESME
Howzit Lorna!
196 and counting
197
198…sounds like Stretch’s golf score
Almost there!
Kazz
Kelly would be one heck of a golfer if she played right handed. 🙂
Wooooohooooo
too-oh-too
Is this a furlough Friday and I don’t know about it?
Hey dpk!!!!
Is ST on furlough today??
Hey Stephen! What’s the haps?
Momona on 162,
You’re right! Hilarious, witty / well-written. It was much more thoughtful & informed than the spoof on Women’s Volleyball.
SteveM on 166,
You were pretty X-treme. I was told by my dad (I don’t quite remember, though) that I was so attached to my ‘coonskin cap ( wore it 24/7) that I would scream bloody murder and go into a major tantrum when they would try to remove the cap in an attempt to wash it.
re:Search for BB HC,
Seems like they have things back a**wards when they are now consulting with
Double Pump / Pump Br
in the 200’s, auryte, where is ST when we need him?
(206 cont’d.-my laptop went haywire)
…Pump Bros. at this late stage in the game. Should’ve done this first thing when they were setting up the advisory committee. I know it’s disturbing to me, RupertdaStupert, Curt & others that
(208 cont’d)
… JD is totally overlooking candidates with that much-needed ‘wow’ factor & are not even giving them the courtesy of an interview to see if they can “blow them away” as Glib Arnold allegedly did. Geez, even Matt Mahar got an interview. I rest my case. (btw, this is the FIRST time I’m hitting the submit button for the last couple of entries- no lie!)
One thing for sure if I was a BB player on scholarship right now I would be sweating.
I guess most people realize that the Alaskan cruise covers only a small amount of Alaska – I think about 10%. It would be akin to visiting Hawaii by limiting yourself to only Oahu and only downtown Honolulu and Waikiki!
Nothing is wrong with that really, specially if you have not cruised before as that portion of Alaska is really beautiful and amazing! However, if you can, do fit in a visit to Denali National Park. Mt McKinley is awesome as is the surrounding terrain, not to mention the natural wildlife up there.
Shhhhhhhh!!!..ST is interviewing for the bb post…..it’s a secret.
Howzit duffer!
Wow mctruck! That’s pretty exciting news!
Hire one of the pump bros.
here’s an article about ex-boise st coach greg graham…

Howdy, i read your blog occasionally and i own a similar one and i was just wondering if you get a lot of spam comments? If so how do you prevent it, any plugin or anything you can advise? I get so much lately it’s driving me mad so any assistance is very much appreciated.
Excellent publish … I really enjoy this site…Thanks
Keep the good information comming, we need more authors like you!
Hi there, when viewing at your site i see some sort of weird codes all over the page, in case it’s important I just thought I’d let you know it says this with all sorts of other stuff after it: “Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent in wp-settings.php line 12”
Superb blog, numerous fascinating information. I remember 7 of days ago, I have visited a similar blog.
