Hawaii football team practices at Saint Louis School

“I just woke up like this,” said pass-game coordinator Craig Stutzmann, who was dressed in his high school alma mater’s apparel. “I don’t know what happened. I had a Saint Louis shirt and a Saint Louis hat right out of bed.”

It was a fitting attire for Stutzmann, whose football worlds met when the Rainbow Warriors practiced on the Saint Louis campus today. The Rainbow Warriors had to move practice sites in anticipation of inclement weather. The Warriors’ only available on-campus area is a grass field. Saint Louis has field with an artificial surface.

“It’s special,” Stutzmann said following the 90-minute workout. “Not only did I go to school here, but I also coached here. And also playing at the University of Hawaii and coaching at the University of Hawaii, it’s special to be able to come out here and coach UH on Saint Louis soil.”

Offensive lineman Eliki Tanuvasa, a Saint Louis graduate who recently transferred from Eastern Illinois, said he never imagined practicing on this field again.

“It’s a true blessing to be back here,” Tanuvasa said. “We did the same O-line drills in the same corner. It brought back flashbacks.”

Tanuvasa said Saint Louis has a special “vibe.”

“I saw (wideout) Jared Smart do a backflip when he came on the field,” Tanuvasa said. “That’s the kind of energy we have here. It brought back a lot of memories, a lot of good memories, a lot of hard-working memories.”

Head coach Nick Rolovich said the practice was used to introduce some new concepts and plays. He said a more physical practice will be held Saturday.

After practice, Rolovich ordered the players and coaches with Saint Louis ties to perform the Crusaders’ alma mater. Referee George Gusman joined in.

    Looking at the pictures …

Kickers Ryan Meskell and Harry Hill seem to have

    the “kicking motion”.

… seem to have the same “kicking motion” …

Perhaps, it’s the angle of the photo but Vaipulu appears to be alarmingly smaller than the player he’s blocking.

I believe that’s freshman No. 64 Umiamaka that Vaipulu is blocking. Watching Wednesday ‘s practice, it appeared as though Umiamaka is taller than his 6-4 listed height. He kinda sticks out.

H-man: Just checked the roster. Vaipulu listed at 6-2, 310 and Umiamaka at 6-4, 310. Roster sizes aren’t always accurate, but the disparity in size between the two sure appears to be much greater than 2 inches. LOL

Kauka Umiamaka 6’4 310 is a load and seeing this young bull taking one-on-one pass pro reps last Saturday was very impressive. He’s got good feet and I don’t think he lost any of the reps I saw. He needs to be on scholarship if he isn’t.

It’s the angle. Especially on the Vanterpool shot. Hey, it’s like a monk seal. I’m not sure how close I’m allowed before somebody yells: Get outta the drill!

    Kalua Pig
Good question. I’m not sure. But I think it was energizing to practice at a different site. Broke up the routine.

UH MBB to play UTEP in Diamond Hd Classic instead of Ball St.

Looking at the pictures, I would say St Louis’ field is nicer than the ones at Aloha Stadium and the TC Ching field.

If Eletise is cleared, I’m assuming he will replace JR Hensley at left guard. Will JR move to right guard? That would make sense to me with Solo Vaipulu at center, for now anyway. But when Kohl Levao returns??? Maybe Michael Eletise at left tackle???
