Warrior Beat: Tuesday tune-up for Hawaii football players
For the final week of the off-season training program, the Warriors went through conditioning drills and player-run schemes today on UH’s soccer field. (With the Ching Athletic Complex closed for the installation of the new track, the Warriors have been rotating between the grass soccer and football fields.)

Love all the pics ST. Time to get excited about the season!
that’s a whole lot of QBs in the stable
anymore coming in for fall practice? move some to another position?
I think they’re done at six QBs.
Opposing TE’s have always given UH’s defense real problems throughout the years. It was usually because of mismatches in size and/or speed. Even our best safeties (Klaneski, Manners, Henderson, Nate Jackson, Silva, Torres, etc,) were exposed vs TE’s (aside from Nate Jackson’s big hit vs UTEP). But I think we got two guys who can cover AND tackle TE’s in this secondary in Hicks and Okeke. Okeke was a little overaggressive early in the season last year and gave up some big plays. He fixed it later and was pretty reliable. Hicks was opposite. Kind of too passive and soft early but got in a comfort zone and became really reliable later in the season. Expecting REAL reliability covering the mid-level from both of them this season. Awesome. Can do.
Laulu gets some lift on his hops. Nice athlete for a big guy.
2019 O-line starting to resemble 2007 O-line in my opinion. Seems deep to me.
Moore = Kia
Levao = Hercules
Vaipulu = Samson
Manning = Steinhoff
Tuulima = Estes (finesse guys)
Hensley = Hisatake
Nuuanu-Kuhiiki = Ginlack
Sunia = Ieru
Nice pics!
Look, look! See WARRIORS! See Warriors WORK! Work, Warriors, work!
GO WARRIORS!!!
Looks like Chevan put on a lot of upper body muscles. Whole team looks in great shape. Nice pics. Thanks ST. Beat Arizona!!! Go Warriors!!!
men’s BB — O Cheng expressed in UH for his choice of college
anyone know if Ganot made contact to check him out for 2020?
Kaizen, ‘Bows!
Don’t sleep on QB Justin fans, that one has swift cannon arm, and good size… ST can vouche for that! 👍
With all due respect, our best safeties were as follows: Blaine Gaison, Keoni Jardine, Mark, Kent and Kurt Kafenztis and Rich Miano.
Don’t forget Gene Pryor, who exited spring ball as the No. 1 right tackle.
Mr. A-House, based on height alone, Riley would have offered a scholarship to Derek Grace. I don’t think he did.
13. I’ve liked Pryor since UH signed him. He’s got good size for a lineman (6’3” 305) but is also an acomplished all-around athlete. In high school he lettered all four years in football, basketball and track and was not only first team all-conference in football but also second team all-conference in hoops and won regional championships in shot put and discus. His JC football program struggled but in local newspaper articles he came across as upbeat, dedicated to his teammates and serious about his classroom work. I hope he has a great fall camp and becomes a productive contributor to this season’s o-line.
Boolakanaka
You’re right, I was framing it toward the run and shoot era. All great safeties then and now Lots of struggles with TE’s but great memories of defenses of the past.
Sorry. I mixed up Pryor and Moore. But you can see 2019 o-line shaping into form. Very similar to 2007.
Looking for big things from Blessman this year, braddah is a run stopper. We are stacked this year.
To add to the 2019 O-line depth. Hard to believe the legit bodies available.
Pryor
Vanterpool
Graves
Tanuvasa
Eletise
Samson Satele wasn’t on the 2007 team but he’s a close comparison to Vaipulu so I included him there. NFL future for him too I’m sure. Awesome
#12 Boo, What about one of my favorite players from waaay baack. Jeris White who played pro for 9 years and is in the UH Hall of fame. I forgot his team mate at safety was a local player who was also pretty good. One of the best hitters at safety was a transfer with a lot of honors and I can’t remember his name. Maybe later.
Sackkabooya:
It’s hard to believe that with all the defections,medical hardships and graduations, the Warriors were down to five healthy offensive linemen for the 2018 Spring Game.
Thanks to strong recruiting and development, the Warriors are now three-deep on the O-line.
I’m hoping Augafa can contribute to the special teams
“gunners” punt and kickoff coverage units in some way. I don’t know how his tackling skills are, maybe some rust. But he is such a versatile player, maybe he could show he has NFL abilities from special teams prowess. He got in the “dog house” little while for fumbling some but it was from trying to hard to make a play I think. Not anything abilities related. I think he showed some raw talent and athleticism that may be special. I hope he can reach that next, higher level. Can do I think, Awesome versatility.
Mr Tsai,
It is quite a transformation in such a short period of time. Hard to get a firm grip on the process. Trusting Freshmen last year had a lot to do with it I think. Many Coaches might have redshirted them. But It seems that was the “Foundation” of this O-line transformation. Plus lots of hard work at every level, top to bottom, players to coaches. All of them. Amazing. Hard to believe. Awesome to see.
Regarding the O-line, the five I saw at the spring game looked big and athletic. It looks like we’ve got some quality recruits at those positions, so yeah, expecting a big improvement there.
I’m so excited for the start of camp and the season.
GO WARRIORS!!!
