Hawaii football QB Cole McDonald on Maxwell Award watch list

Hawaii quarterback Cole McDonald has drawn the attention of the Maxwell Football Club.
McDonald is one of 80 on the Maxwell Award Watch List for the college football player of the year. Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, a Saint Louis School graduate, was the 2018 winner.
In 2018, his first as a UH starting quarterback, McDonald threw for 3,875 yards (eighth most among NCAAA passers) and 36 touchdowns (sixth). He computed a 146.5 efficiency rating, the highest for a UH starting quarterback since Bryant Moniz in 2010.
McDonald, rush end Kaimana Padello and head coach Nick Rolovich will represent the Rainbow Warriors at next week’s Mountain West Football Media Days in Henderson, Nev.

Hoping Cole has the kind of season he is capable of.
Maybe I’m wrong, but I think McDonald has a chance to have a better season than Utah State’s Jordan Love.
1. McDonald is healthy this year.
2. UH returns its entire coaching staff.
3. Utah State lost most of its offense, including receivers, backs and linemen. The Aggies also have a new coaching staff.
4. The Aggies play at Wake Forest, LSU, San Diego State and Fresno State.
He has stay to healthy which is difficult with all the hits he takes.
Cole certainly deserves to be on that list. Just by the “eye test” the players look bigger, stronger and more focused.
Can’t wait til the season starts.

USU is hoping that Gary Andersen will recapture the glory and winning ways during his first stint at Logan. They fail to see the terrible mess he created while at Oregon State, which had him openly criticising his coaching staff and led to him resigning during the season. He left the Beavers on life support. Rarely do coaches on their second stint the same school do well. Johnny Majors’ failed second stint at Pitt comes to mind after he got fired at Tennessee.

College Football News (CFN) has Hawaii finishing the season ranked 89th of the 130 DI schools. They also do not have the Warriors in a bowl game. CFN cites Hawaii’s weakness as the line, both offense and defensive lines. Well, we’ll find out just how good or bad the Warriors are when they open against the Arizona Wildcats who are 11.5 pt favorites in the game.

#2 Stephen, I’ve felt that the stars really aligned for Utah State last year. I looked at their starting lineup at the game last season and noted an all senior OL (or close to it). Lots of senior talent who knew the system. Jordan Love is a good decision maker, but if their OL does not gel, it’ll be hard to make decisions from one’s back.
