Hawaii football: Defensive backs put in extra work
The Hawaii football team’s defensive backs had their own player-run workouts this morning at the grass practice field.
They worked on footwork, hip movements and identifying routes.
Cornerback Cortez Davis and freshman safety Tiger Peterson — both of whom enrolled this past January — have benefitted from a semester’s instruction.

Mr Tsai, what does the team call the safety positions (like how Mac and Mike are sometimes used for LBs)
Mr. Burro Sabio:
They do have free and strong, but they also play left and right, and they also go with a three-safety alignment, and other subpackages. Since they’re interchangeable, I think they usually go with the generic “safety.”
Thank you Mr Tsai
What do Mr. Tsai and Mr. Tsabio think of this group of DBs? I think our “D’ is going to be strong overall. Waddya yas guys think?
Don’t Okeke in any of the pictures
I hope nothing happened to Ikem Okeke and Ro Farris. How come there are multiple pictures of the same people and not of some others.
Would love to see how Ikem and Ro look right now.

Ro Farris’ pic is in the June 28th post – Beach Day.

Okeke had a morning class so he showed up late. He went through some reps.

He is a big guy. I think he played free safety last year. In 2017, he was at the hybrid.
Defensive backs! My favorite position in football.

The Secondary struggled with deep coverage and when they did play soft (2nd/3rd and long), but was not bad when the field shortened. It seemed the reason was that there was not enough pressure applied in base package. Only Padello usually. And the blitz schemes were not that effective either. I think all that will change second year of Batoon’s tenure.
I think Farris can shut you down within 20 yards (he looks like he may be more physical now) of the route. A good “centerfielder” (free safety) should fix the deep coverage problems they had last year (see San Jose St. game). The opposite corner should be just as good (less physical but a little faster guy) judging by the list of candidates. Hicks (to me) was the best (most consistent as far as making plays in “big” situations) defensive back last year. Plus they added a lot more speed and athleticism this year. That combined with the amount of pressure packages Batoon can use in year two should be awesome. I cant wait to see it. Going be unreal I think. Can do.
Agreed with Booya. Much of breakdowns had to do with an insufficient amount of pressure from the front 6-7. What I can visibly see, is we are longer, quicker and more athletic. Now, they just have to trust the scheme and technique….we have enough athletes to be more than competitive on the backend.
AO – Fordy sumting mo days! Lookin forward to dat!

A-House- kindly extend my aloha to Midori and the ‘Ohana for me please.
Mahalo for the pic, Stephen! We need more coverage of UH Football, IMHO. Why a local TV station’s lead sports story last night was about a loca prepl player now at at mainland university is beyond me. Best of luck to them, but I want stories and coverage about UH athletes.
I saw this posted on ESPN today. Same can be said about Scheyenne.

Angels manager Brad Ausmus was asked about still not knowing the reason for Tyler Skaggs’ death (results of the toxicology report won’t be known until October). “At this point, I don’t really care. His loss is his loss, and there’s an emptiness regardless of the cause. I’m not in any rush to find out. All I know is Tyler Skaggs is no longer here.”

Gov Ige says estimated time of completion of the new stadium will be in 2024
UH plays at Vanderbilt in 2023
2 excellent reasons for me to keep healthy — would like to see both!!!
I may have missed this but where Hawaii play home games if stadium is under construction? Will there be a game or 2 on the neighbor islands?
They need to have one of those contractors who build condos in kakaako/ward build the stadium. Seems like those condos take less than a year.
New stadium will be in parking lot. Will tear down old one afterward. Be prepared for no parking for years. Also old stadium was built in the best location on the parcel. So will not be simple construction.
Rep. Luke said the stadium could be completed by 2022.

Yeah I was surprised when she said that in the interview. The reports that came out before mentioned 2024. That is way too long. 2022 sound a lot better. I actually am a lot more optimistic about this project when hearing that this is gonna be much more of a public and private partnership.
One thing that I’m questioning though is their possible idea of including a hotel in the complex. While it could bring revenue, I would assume visiting teams would use it. I’d actually rather visiting teams stay in Waikiki where historically some teams have had trouble with distractions. it seems a lot less of a vacation and easier to focus when a hotel is in a less appealing halawa neighborhood next to the venue you’ll be playing at
It will be a entertainment complex there, including bars, restaurants, movie theater and bowling ally so there will be distraction. One thing is they are away from the beach. No scantily clad coeds walking around for the players to look at.
I would think it’s a good place to stay with all the stuff there. Plus it’s closer to the airport so the visiting team won’t have to fight traffic like they would if they stay in Waikiki.
Nah, we want the visiting teams to stay in Waikiki with the distractions and “sights” for the players to look at.
The state planners or perhaps it’s the politicians, but when you announce the budget, you must know the timeline. $350 million represents a budget based on a specific design and construction schedule.
With the usual delays, weather, lawsuits, problems with shipping supplies, additional studies, more lawsuits, cost overruns, I’d say that the new stadium will be done in 2029 or so. Interesting article on CSU’s Canvas Stadium and had they waited longer to built it. It took them 2 years to complete. Never happen in Hawaii.

Regarding the pass rush I hope Coach Batoon has a 3rd and long specialty unit that us the fans can identify and get behind, similar to how the NFL coaches bring in specific specialists. Power pocket buster at the 1 technique (Tavai? Russell?). High motor disrupter at the 3 (Vega?). A “slip by” speed rushing end (Padello definitely). And an OLB who can finish off the sack when/if the QB breaks contain Scott? Okeke?). A real specialty unit.
Last season Batoon shuffled in substitution packages using almost everybody, and often. Sometimes it seemed random (even on 3rd and long) but you could see the rationale, see who can do what in certain exacting situations. Would be exciting to see specific players “trot” onto the field pumping up the crowd knowing that these guys are in to “mess up the pocket” and apply pressure. The crowd would go nuts. So would the Secondary. Rise expectation. Bring excitement and anticipation. Can Do. Awesome.
I think that Hawaii opens the season with Arizona is such a fitting, inspirational coincidence, allowing both teams to give respect and some closure to Coach Tomey. So apropos. That being said, I feel like Arizona fans don’t realize how much appreciation we have for Coach Tomey here. They have their own personal impressions and appreciation for him and the levels he reached for them there. I feel like they may see us here in Hawaii as irrelevant in comparison. Just Coach Tomey’s “stepping stone” for them to benefit later from. Happens all the time in College Football. Understandable. But his tenure here was different than just that.
He could see the value in the “Culture” here. Assimilating us as a “people” with the NCAA Football landscape that had previously dismissed us as irrelevant. He saw something larger than just Football. A real “program”. Coach Rolovich has that same appreciation and vision of us here. We were, and are now so lucky to be appreciated. You can do it Boys. We can (us Fans) too. Let’s Go Warriors!!
The one thing I do not understand is how the opponent’s WR can get so open. Please don’t say its a lack of a pass rush. A pass rush definitely helps, a lot, but a good QB can get his pass off inside of 3. Our DBs seem to be out of position (lack of communication) about who is switching with whom. Of course it doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it ends up with a long play or TD for the other guys. Is it because there are so many packages that mistakes are made? I don’t know enough to know. Maybe it should be a simpler, smaller package for the DBs.
eugene ford looks thirty.
I would be my life savings that the stadium does not get done by 2022. Name me a big state construction project that has finished on time and on budget?
