Men’s volleyball: National team defeats France 3-1 today in VNL pool play

The men’s national volleyball team, with four players from Hawaii on the 14-man roster, playing France today in a Volleyball Nations League final round pool play match in Chicago.

On the team are setters Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) and Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani), libero Erik Shoji (Punahou) and setter-hitter Micah Ma’a (Punahou).

Not making the roster with Hawaii ties were MB Taylor Averill and LTui Tuileta. Also, Garrett Muagututia chosen at OH over TJ DeFalco. Coach John Speraw had a pool of 25 from which to choose.

The U.S. wins match, 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21.
Starting and playing in all sets were Christenson and E. Shoji.
U.S. took Set 2 25-22. France wins Set 3 25-23

In today’s opener, Poland upset world No. 1 Brazil, 25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-9.

The U.S. plays Russia onFriday. The semifinals are Saturday and medal medal matches Sunday.

    #1 I thought so too. Maybe Speraw wants to get another UCLA kid on the team. Good for recruiting and good for program recognition.

    2. Doubt that is under consideration. On Thursday, Speraw started seven Olympians. Think he was looking for veterans.
    3. yep, several nonconference road matches scheduled. Contracts not signed but they are expected to be at Loyola and Lewis.
