Hawaii baseball: Dylan Thomas signs with Minnesota Twins
Former UH pitcher Dylan Thomas is in a Sunshine state — geographically and emotionally — after signing a contract with the Minnesota Twins.
The signing took place this morning at the Twins’ training facility in Florida.
Thomas said he will receive a $100,000 signing bonus.
Thomas is expected to be assigned to the Elizabethon (Tenn.) Twins of the Appalachian League.
Thomas was the Twins’ 13th-round draft choice last week and 38th-round pick in 2018. After failing to reach an agreement last year, Thomas returned to UH as a fourth-year junior. He led the Rainbow Warriors with a 2.01 ERA this past season, increasing his value for 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Thanks for the update. You think $100,000 is okay ?
Islandman:
I think it’s a reasonable amount for a guy with his potential. He has the frame, non-stressful delivery and killer slider that he should develop into a pitcher who will sign a lot more contracts in the future. It’s nice money for a 16th rounder, and he gets to start his pro career now. He’s only 22. He could be in the big leagues when he’s 25.
By the way, I was a fourth-year junior when I was hired at The Honolulu Advertiser in 1981. I made something like $11 an hour. Even with inflation, I think Thomas is off to a more prosperous start.
Norm is going back to work per reports out of LA. It’s obviously not about the money.
Stephen, thanks . By the way he was 13th round.
Jordan Yamamoto, Iolani, was12th round in 2014 but could have been drafted in the 5th round, per scoring live article.
He is supposed to make his MLB debut today. An article said he has an 88-92 mph fastball, a big curve ball , changeup and great command.
When i started work in 1972 , i think my pay was at $2.95 per hour, Have to check on that, seems low.
So it looks like it was a great decision to stay one more year in college. Probably earned himself at least 60K more than what he would have gotten as a 38 round pick.
Yamamoto was from St Louis
Not a big league pitcher in my opinion. Could see him getting up to AAA
Congrats to Dylan Thomas!
Well, I recovered enough from the Tsai-ko Karaoke Call to note the Funky Cold Medina made the Lion Sleep Tonight in the Green Leaves of Summer. Me and Mrs. Jones…me in particular… got a little mangled 😯 but Kikaida came to the rescue from the Genji bar-side.
DPK was the life of the party…and “No, Kid”, Gaye won’t let you engrave your name on a mic. But you did real good! Glad you could make it!.
Thanks Islandman.
My starting wage in 1967 was something like $3.48/hr. U.S. minimum wage in 1967 was $1.40/hr. So maybe I was overpaid.
Best of luck to Dylan!
For some reason the number 240 is stuck in my old mind. Then I realized that it was the minimum wage in my younger days here, along with the cost of one semester of 12 credits or more at UH Manoa back in the day. Plate lunch at Graces was around $3.00 or so.
Graces in Moiliili back in the day – “Chicken Cutlet. Extra mac salad. No chow fun. Please!”
I never saw this coming. I wrongly predicted the major league careers of Vinnie Catricala and Matt Cooper. The jury is still out on Quintin Torres Costa.
Jordan Yamamoto? Seven shutout innings. I can’t believe it.
In his MLB debut, the Marlins’ Jordan Yamamoto, of St Louis School, pitched a 7 inning gem today in 9-0 win vs. the Cardinals. Kolten had one hit .
Jordan allowed only 3 hits, struck out 5 and walked 2 .
See Jordan’s mean curve (or slider) ?

Slider? Looks pretty fast.
Did you know that Yamamoto got called up? I was just checking up on Kolten Wong’s day.
16. Notice of his call up was in yesterday’s staradvertiser.
Old School Dave,
I think you were at UH around the same time as me and ST 🙂
I did lunch at Graces’s on weekends, Pucks Alley, and of course Waikiki.
What year you grad from UH?
Ever notice how the price of a plate lunch follows the minimum wage in Hawaii? The major exception was Grace’s lunch wagon at UH (Metcalf street). In fall 1967 a plate lunch was 65 cents but rose to 70 cents before fall semester ended, I was paid $1.25/hour at Dole Cannery that summer.
Ate there every day…even when I woke up late and missed classes I would drive to UH to eat Graces’ lunch…and often went home again, skipping afternoon classes. My GPA didn’t go up, but my satisfaction and weight did. 🙂
