Former Hawaii football player Torres headed to Japan
Former UH football player Dakota Torres has reached an agreement to play for the Lixil Deers of Japan’s X-League.
“I’m stoked and can’t wait to play and be immersed in a culture I am unfamiliar with,” Torres wrote in a text to the Warrior Beat. It will be exciting, and I can’t wait.”
Torres said he will depart Honolulu on June 6.
He said he has been told he will play tight end, slotback and wideout.
Torres is a 2014 Punahou School graduate who signed with UH as a tight end in February of that year. After redshirting, he was used as a tight end, fullback, H-back, linebacker and slotback for the Warriors. He earned his bachelor’s degree in December.

Keep the dream. And enjoy the experience! I miss good, yet inexpensive Japanese food. No can get that here without giving up an arm and a leg, and another arm.
I think there should always be room for a TE/H back in the “run and shoot” system. Goal line TE, short yardage H, or just the ability to target mismatches as a slot. Could have used Torres’ brawn vs BYU. Good luck to him. Real good “team first” guy.
Contrats to Dakota! Great opportunity to live and learn about a different culture. Hawaii has some similarities to Japan, but it’s still very different. I believe that he, like other foreign players will be working during the day in regular office job (many teach English to Japanese staff). Room and board will be provided in a company dorm (many companies have dorms), along with his salary. Yes, the food there is very “oishii” and half the price of Japanese food here!
I believe that former UH DC Thom Kaumeyer is still coaching in Japan.
Kaniela Tuipulotu played one year in Japan and moved back to Maui
