Warrior Beat: Rolovich completes Hawaii football staff
Nick Rolovich completed his coaching staff with the hiring of Johnnie Mack as a quality-control coach for offense.
Mack will work under receivers coach Andre Allen. Allen coached Mack at City College of San Francisco in 2000 and 2001.
After that, Mack was a running back and kickoff returner at Texas Tech under Mike Leach.
Several years later, Mack, who was living in Dallas at the time, joined SMU as a strength/conditioning assistant. At the time, former UH head coach June Jones and strength/conditioning coordinator Mel deLaura were at SMU.
“Working for June and those guys, it was a great experience for me,” Mack said.
The SMU stint sparked a drive to coach, which led to a GA position at East Central University, a Division II program in Ada, Okla., and coaching jobs at North Texas and Houston Baptist.
But Mack said he could not turn down an opportunity to work under Rolovich, a fellow City College alumnus.
“Having that connection was awesome,” Mack said. “It made me feel like it was a family. It was a no-brainer for me when the opportunity came. … Rolo, as a person, if anybody gets a chance to meet with him in person, who wouldn’t want to work for a guy like (that)?”
Mack said he met the whole UH staff today. Several coaches returned this weekend after recruiting on the mainland.
“I’m here to to serve and do whatever it takes to help this offense and this team reach the highest potential,” Mack said.
Welcome to Hawaii. What are the duties of an offensive QC coordinator/coach?
Building depth in the coaching staff is just as important as building up the player’s depth chart.
\BTW, and someone else asked, but how many more 2020 scholarships are available?
I thought it was all used up by 2/2019 signing day.

I’m an old, old man who’s been doing this for a long, long time. So here’s the deal:
> Don’t worry about the numbers. There are many different formulas. The numbers always work out. There also are many checks and balances, so, there is no ambiguity about the numbers.
> Don’t worry about the calendar. Last year, a radio personality questioned the quality of a late pickup. That player was JoJo Ward. There are more quality prospects than there are Division I spots in all sports. So, if a sports team has two openings, the coaches don’t just have two prospects. They have a board full of prospects.
So, relax, enjoy the summer. Things will work out. They always do.

Long Beach state has a new mascot, a Shark.
Different kind of numbers – Arizona Wildcats record and stats. Overall 2018 record 5-7/Conference 4-5, but they lost one-point games to UCLA 30-31 and to Arizona St 40-41. Also lost close one to USC 20-24. One bit of encouraging stat is Arizona’s poor road record last season. They lost 4 of 5 on the road. Offensively, they averaged around 450 ypg/200 rushing/250 passing. Starting QB Tate and top RBs return for 2019 season.
UH sports fans, Wahine Petra Melounova after winning the 1st two rounds, is into the Round of 16 of the NCAA Women’s Singles tournament in Orlando. The first UH player ever to win 2 matches at the NCAA’s.
She has to serve underhanded because of a shoulder injury and has been doing that for the whole season. Yet she was named BigWest Player of the Year, for the 3rd straight season.

Addressing the media after his introduction as the coach and general manager for the XFL’s Houston franchise, former longtime Hawaii and SMU coach June Jones suggested ex-Texas A&M star Johnny Manziel could soon have a home in the league.
Jones first explained that he “learned real quick” in his career that “good players make good coaches … and that obviously starts with the quarterback, No. 1.” And when informed Manziel is often a popular suggestion at QB in the area considering the former Cleveland Browns starter was born, raised and came to fame in Texas, Jones didn’t downplay the possibility of pursuing him.
“I had Johnny in Hamilton,” he said, referring to Manziel’s 2018 stint with the CFL’s Tiger-Cats where Jones was the head coach. “I enjoyed the five or six weeks (with him) … He played very good for me, actually. Johnny is an interesting guy. He’s competitive. He’s proven that he has won. He’s just been through a lot in the last three or four years. That’s kind of a league decision there, but definitely I assume that he’ll be in the draft pool. I assume that.”
Watching the rebroadcasts of the UH Football games on OC12 and youtube highlights I am even more convinced that McDonald’s NFL future is as receiver/utility similar to Taysom Hill. Hill’s running style is it that of a running back. McDonald running style looks like a possession receiver, deliberate with good upright bursts. Way different than Hill. Easier (more efficient because of running style) to get downfield running routes. I hope before he graduates Rolovich can somehow showcase all of his next level skills. Maybe can be mid-rounds pick I think. You can see the ability. Athletically special. Just got to round out the skills.

It is great to see UH with a full coaching staff. It’s like night and day compared to 5 – 6 years ago.
IMO having this coaching staff remain intact was the biggest offseason victory.

The Hawaii Bowl will return to its traditional Christmas Eve slot this year.
It will be the 14th time in its 18-years that the bowl game will be played on Dec. 24. The 2018 game was held on Dec. 22, the earliest date in its history.
“We’re excited to return to the 24th,” said Daryl Garvin, the game’s executive director. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.
This year the bowl has contractual tie-ins with the Mountain West Conference, Brigham Young University and the American Athletic Conference.
Garvin declined to speculate on possible matchups. But since the game is one of 15 bowls owned and operated by ESPN Events, if the University of Hawaii and BYU are both bowl-eligible the Rainbow Warriors would likely be the MWC representative and could play the Cougars for the first time in the postseason.

every year, certain power 5 basketball programs bring in very talented players who start as freshman and leave for the “pros” immediately — this happens year after year, but their APR numbers seemingly never drop –do these one-and-done players ever return to get their degree?

As long as the one and done players have passing grades for their last semester, there is no APR penalty for leaving to the pros. But good to check what kind of classes they are taking.
I’m going to post some of what I perceive as Ganot’s thought process as to why he is not overly distressed over his recruiting concerns. He seems calm and not in too much of a hurry to fill scholarships with “leftover” options as his primaries commit to other schools. Purely conjecture on my part but I can see the mindset.
With the addition of Madut (pronounced “Madoo”) Ganot has filled a specific need that has been missing, athleticism. Ideally one more JC (or portal) med/big (6’8″ or taller) athletic “rim runner” to compliment Carper and Hulland would round out the team for 2019/20. The next set of scholarships should focus on the future (true freshmen) so the urgency to fill those might not be so critical at this moment, the fit and skillset is the important part. So waiting might be best. But he does need that “rim runner” this season though.
The off season development of every player will be key. Every one of them showed real promise (those who’s ceiling was reached have transferred; my opinion). I think this staff has the ability to execute this. Carper’s paint presence. Hulland’s shooting prowess from mid and long range. Stanberry’s accuracy. Avea’s outside shot and defensive ability. Hemsley’s overall development as a potential “glue guy”. Raimo’s finishing around the rim (easy fix). Buggs’ overall game “polishing”. And Colina’s development as “live body” bruiser. With the addition of Madut and Villa seems pretty complete if (“IF”) there is development over the summer. Just the rim runner as soon as possible.
Would be able to match-up and keep games close with all the different sizes and skillsets during conference play. Just depends on if you trust Ganot on his “X’s and O’s” ability to move the pieces around and win games. I trust his in game ability. I trust his recruiting mindset (ability??) too. We’ll see.
When I watched Colina I can see him as a player similar to Zaza Pachulia. Clunky and awkward that can mess up your rhythm in short spurts. Just needs to find his role and get into the right “mind set” as a “punk ass” player and embrace it.
Hemsley to me looks like a potential “five tool” “glue guy” similar to someone like Will Barton comparatively. Just needs some reps in a competitive summer league somewhere.
Avea can be the next Valdes once he figures it out and turns the “corner” on finding his abilities, especially athletically.
