+++++
Set 4: Beach wins 25-23
7:38: TJ DeFalco with his 20th kill ends it.
7:30: Beach up 23-21. TO UH
7:24. Challenge denied. it’s 19-18
and now 20-18 on Josh Tuaniga’s ace. TO Hawaii.
7:23: Hawaii challenging that there was a net violation on the block of Colton Cowell. At the moment it’s 19-18. Beach
7:19: Colton Cowell with the lineshot. Puts Hawaii up 18-17.
7:14: TJ DeFalco with his 17th kill. Beach up 15-14 at the TTO.
7:08. This should be a delay of game. Beach already had two different players in the box. Scoreboard wrong too.
7:06: Ball called in. it’s 12-10 Beach. Would have been 11-11.
7:06: Beach challenging ball in. Believe this is the 49ers last challenge.
7:06: Kyle Ensing continues to go under the net and landing on Colton Cowell. IMHO this isn’t right.
6:57. Call stands. Hawaii up 3-2.
6:55: Beach challenging over a foot fault on Patrick Gasman. it’s 2=2 at the moment.
Set 3: Beach wins 25-22
3:48: TJ DeFalco ends it with his 14th kill. 25-22.
3:46: Patrick Gasman has been a little anxious the past two matches. got up too early and whiffed it wide. Beach up 24-22. TO Hawaii.
3:44: Down ref finally calling centerline violations on Beach. It’s 21-21
3:38: Joe Worsley with the service overpass. It’s 17-17. TO Beach
3:36: Two aces by TJ DeFalco and it’s 17-15. TO Warriors
still baffled by a couple of calls that didn’t go Hawaii’s way, including DeFalco flying under the net onto Hawaii’s side. It’s how Hendrik Mol got hurt.
3:26: Beach wins challenge, it’s 8-8.
3:24: So after lengthy discussion. Beach challenging touch on the block. at the moment it’s 9-7 Hawaii.
3:16: Hawaii up 5-0, 4 kills by Stijn van Tilburg.. TO Beach. No surprise it is on the opposite side from the Beach student section. This has happened almost every match Hawaii has played here for several years.
Set 2: Beach wins 25-22:
6:09: Hawaii with another seven service errors. They have 14. Stijn van Tilburg blocked to end it, 25-22.
6:06: Joe Worsley and Dalton Solbrig stuff Ethan Siegfried. It’s 22-21. TO Beach
6:01: Hawaii has rallied to 20-18, with a block of TJ DeFalco and then DeFalco hits wide. TO Beach.
5:50: Two aces by Josh Tuaniga and it’s 13-9. TO UH. Warriors with 12 Service errors, five in Set 2.
Set 1: UH wins 25-23
5:35: Dalton Solbrig with the overpass ends it. UH survives 25-23.
5:32a; 7th service error, Rado Parapunov blocked and Patrick Gasman hits wide. Beach has closed to 23-22. TO Warriors.
5:26: Hawaii up 21-16. It was 21-13. keeping the beach in the set is 6 service errors by Hawaii. TO Warriors.
5:12: Warriors hitting .800, Beach .000. UH up 7-2. TO Beach

Go Warriors! Bring it home!!
Home court advantage has gone to the winner of the 3 matches this year….big advantage to Long Beach, having won like 40+ matches on their home court. I believe their seniors have never lost a home match.
BUT…..the aunties are in da building, with a large and vocal fan base with them. The “home” court is not black….but a neutral NCAA tournament blue. A month ago, Bows lost two in five…..mere points from winning one, if not both.
Prediction….Bows in four…..aunties and mana from those in the gym and at home the difference this time. Hope I’m right….
Pffffffffffffffffttttt.
Can’t believe it.
They HAD to choose the outdated rainbow logo to wear at the championship.
Well. At least we won’t be TOO surprised if Hawaii loses.
2. Seniors have lost at home when they were freshmen. last time was 2016.
3. oh stop.
I really wish they would have called that T/O a lot sooner
Man that coulda been a match deflater if they lost that one
NCAA should be ashamed of themselves showing that piece about Wade’s investigation.
The team needs to calm down. 4 service errors in a row
Too many service errors by Hawaii, while Long Beach is serving up aces. Hawaii is losing the mental game. Seems like the Warriors need a sports psychologist.
These commentators are so biased! Not sure what Charlie was complaining about (the fans), but the commentators said thats what home court advantage is about and to warrior up. Terrible!
7. didn’t realize that had. That is sad. Especially since it has nothing to do with the NCAA.
It is standard procedure any time a complaint is filed.
9. 31 matches in and you say that?
One thing they’ve had to do is talk to the Beach student section. which behind UH’s service line
Is it just me or are the ESPN announcers very pro-LBSU. Even in the first set when Hawai’i was up .
11.
The announcers made it seem like Wade was jus being a whiner about complaining to the refs about the students
What do you expect? Paul Sunderland is from Southern California. This is a home match for him. Very biased. I’m about to to turn off the volume and listen to Tiff on the radio.
10. There’s also something called sportsmanship. They’ve had to place security guards back there.
7. so was it the NCAA that ran it online or ESPN?
Middles just need to get back to this.
It was shown on ESPN. I’m watching on my cable
Service errors……
During a break in action, ESPN put up a graphic about on the timeline regarding Wade’s incident. TOTALLY uncalled for, and so unnecessary. Announcers basically just read what was on the screen.
17 it was also packaged with timelines and statements including one from UH. So NCAA must know ESPN will ran this. This to me NCAA saying this is why Wade will/did not get COY. Way to cover their own! Disgusting.
12. This is the match that counts the most, where mental acuity is crucial. All those missed serves, lost UH the second set. They’ll have to sharpen up. As for the students shouting behind the service line, so did BYU do the same thing but UH did not miss as many serves. Guess the nerves got to them this time. Maybe I exaggerated in my reaction but I was so exasperated with their numerous, consecutive missed serves.
22. I reported last week that Wade was the likely COY because the AVCA delayed the announcement that was supposed to be on Tuesday.
What I don’t understand is why DeFalco is allowed to fly under the net and it isn’t called. It’s how Mol got hurt 2 years ago. If there’s contact that should be a violation.
They have 3 guys passing when TJ is serving? And Van Tilburg in that service reception?
The rule is that your “allowed” to cross the line AFTER the completion of the point. However, that point you’re talking about, DeFalco made contact with Dalton…..which was his compliant
These service errors are giving the 49ers the game.
25. EXACTLY!!! I’ve said that for SO LONG!!!
28. You said it!
27. Yup…exactly…no R2 wants to call it.
Unforced errors……boys look tight at the end of the sets. Nothing to lose now…..GO FOR IT!!!
27. I know the rule. saying there was contact. And that was how Mol got hurt last year.
That should have been a delay of game call on Beach.
How can they not know the score? Just pathetic.
34. YES!!! Refs have lost control of this match…
How was that not a contact violation? This is just sickening to watch.
Hawai’i just can’t take advantage. Even when LBSU makes a mistake, Hawaii just make their own.
Win or lose….GREAT season team! Keep your heads up, you repped yourselves, your families, the university and the STATE, like champs! Nothing to be ashamed of……left it all on the court.
No surprise here that Long Beach won the national championship. Can’t fault the Warriors for lack of effort. Maybe they tried too hard. Too bad that Worsley set too tightly in that last rally, missed opportunity there. Oh, the scores were so close, two sets, 25-23 and two sets 25-22. Hawaii lost by a total of 7 points. At least Stijn van Tilburg got that crucial last serve in and a good one, so he can’t fault himself. Jacob Thelle served well and did not miss a single serve tonight. It will be interesting to see how well he’ll be able to set next year. I expect of him more accurate setting.
Great job by Hawaii fighting all night. LBSU was just a little bit better, all sets were highly contested. Would have been interesting to see who would win on a true neutral court. But UH is set up for a really good season next year. Lose Stijn, Joe and Solbrig from the starters, but should have good successors and strength in Colton, Rado, Pat, and Gage.
40. Of course no surprise to you. Didn’t have the faith to begin with. Thanks for all your support.
42. I wasn’t in the stands. I was rooting for Hawaii at home. I didn’t cause Hawaii to lose. Did you travel to Long Beach to support the team?
43.Thank you Mr. Pessimist for all your support
I think the diference was Josh Tuaniga. His service aces. His defense. And he was in tune with his team.
Well, it’s done. What I am most grateful for is how this team brought back in the fans to the arena. I was there during the sellouts of the Yuval Katz days. It was surreal. The past 2 sellouts here felt almost like those days, but there was definitely more dancing and more Alan Hackbarth and his followers back then. I hope next season brings in even more fans with THREE All-Americans returning and alot of the other top schools losing their top players. I see Hawai`i #1, BYU #2, UCLA #3, Lewis #4, UCSB #5.
With home matches against LBSU and UCI, next year’s regular season Big West title looks pretty good so far. Hopefully all our players return without any exodus like, ahem, two players from last season.
The match was exciting, and I can’t wait to see Hawaii taking on Long Beach at the SSC. This year’s total attendance was over 83,000. It would be something to see that top 100,000.
Thank you for a great season bows! Maybe well get em next year #2020 Long Beach was too clutch at the end. TJ Defalco looks to be the future of the U.S. National Team.
Looking to see how Thelle does at the setters helm and who will replace Stijn and Dalton. Rado could very well be the preseason frontrunner for NPOY.
41, 45 & 46: I agree with your analysis and projections for the team. The future looks bright.
43. If it makes you feel better, go ahead and vent your frustrations on me. I don’t mind as we’ll never meet in person. I was just being realistic. I agree with your optimistic projections for next year. The team will be really good.
45
He played well, but the difference in this match was service errors by UH. They shot themselves in the foot too many times especially at the ends of sets.
Man, it is heartbreaking to see these guys in tears in the end. They tried their best. It just wasn’t meant to be.
When does the team arrive back in Honolulu? Will fans gather at the airport or on campus to greet them?
Think they need some time alone.
And they should be given that.
DeFalco showed why he is POY. He always gets it done in crunch time.
Regarding next year, a lot depends on how mentally focused they are on winning the NC. Last year, the post-season snub triggered a collective work ethic that took UH from very good to stellar. If the team wakes up on Monday and focuses on improving themselves, then they will be a top 3 favorite for the NC.
Assuming Thelle is a strong successor to Joe, and UH addresses the OH and MB2 openings, UH should win the BW over UCSB. Nationally, like ManoaFan, I think UH, UCSB, Lewis, UCLA and BYU should be the contenders. I don’t think we all realize how spoiled we have been watching this team. One of the top 5 all time teams despite not winning the NC, because of another all-time top 5 team in LBSU. UH won’t be as good next year, and won’t be head-and-shoulders above everyone else. But they have the pieces in place for a realistic shot at the NC.
Home court was the difference and LB got the job done. Mahalo to all the players and coaches for a great season! Looking forward to next year.
The only thing that brings me
Solace in this is Uh brings back four quality starters to the beach’s two who are not the kind of players they can lead on. The Warriors will be fine and hopefully the 2020 title is theirs. just feel bad for worsley, svt, solbrig and Rosie so close to achieving their goal just some
Costly mistakes at the end of sets 2, 3,4.
Cindy, can you give us an assessment of the incoming recruiting class? Mahalo.
50. Beach had more service error (23-20) but also more aces (8-2). IMHO the SEs came at more critical times.
52. they are leaving LAX on two separate flights, one united, one american. I guess you could track whatever flights come from LAX-HNL.
not like 96 where everyone was on the same flight (I think Aloha) and the firetrucks came out to do an arc that the plane taxied through. That was fun. I got off earlier than they did and there were hundreds at the gate. Back when you could do such a thing.
I did ask about some sort of reception for team. But with School out and graduation Saturday doesn’t seem like there is time to get it in before guys leave for summer.
56. home court was huge. it was supposed to be treated as a neutral site but the NCAA allowed Beach to treat it like their home matches.
to follow up on the student section. I was told by tourney officials that a number of students were escorted out during the match because of profanity and other inappropriate comments. Which just makes what the ESPN guys were saying about ‘homecourt advantage’ even more outrageous.
58. not right now. but will add who is coming in for my story monday
