Hanna Helvig makes it official.
From UH:
Robyn Ah Mow announced the final signing to round out the incoming freshman class. Hanna Hellvig a 6-2 outside hitter from Lidingö Stockholm, Sweden has signed a National Letter of Intent and is the newest member of the Rainbow Wahine.

Hellvig is a six-rotation player who comes to Hawaii with a lot of international experience. She will graduate from Ållebergs Gymnasium (Sweden’s national high school for volleyball) this spring. Hellvig has played 17 official matches with the Swedish Senior National team and 35 matches on the Junior National Team. Most recently, she helped lead the U19 team to the gold medal at the Northern European Championships (NEVZA). In 2017, Hellvig won the NEVZA silver medal on the U19 team, and in 2016 a bronze in U17 at the NEVZA. She was named to the NEVZA All-Tournament Team all three years.

Hellvig is also an accomplished beach and snow volleyball player. On the beach, most notably, she won the Swedish Beach Tour Tournament in Kalmar in 2018 while placing fifth at the Senior Swedish National Championships. Most recently, she won the Swedish Championship in snow volleyball.

“We are excited with all that Hanna will bring to our team,” Santos said. “Her volleyball IQ is off the charts and she possesses a solid skill set plus the height and physicality that we were looking for in pin hitters. We believe she will be a perfect fit for our team,” says Ah Mow.

Hellvig is the fifth player to matriculate to Hawaii from Sweden. Hellvig comes from a talented volleyball family. Both her parents played in the Sweden’s top division for many years. Her younger brother, Jonathan, won a Youth Olympic gold medal in 2018. Hellvig will current assistant coach and former Rainbow Wahine standout, Angelica Ljungqvist.

Omg!…Wonderful News!…After seeing our spring matches and the addition of a very good recruiting class I am totally optimistic that we will be an awesome team next year.

Hope Hanna plays beach as well.
hall could really use someone with her size to help replace the huge loss of Mags.

Nice that washington is coming in the fall.
I think the wahine can beat them.

    1. They will be young but very talented.
    2. All depends on what Coach Robyn allows. She has not wanted her indoor players to do beach, wanted their commitment to indoor only.
People seem to forget how hard it is to play two sports in college. It is a huge commitment, especially an indoor player who also has a spring season in addition to beach. Ask Maglio, who redshirted her first beach season.

Oh my gosh!!! Height, talent, physicality, volleyball IQ…this will be an exciting year! If the Wahine can take Texas to 5 with what we had (and sick) imagine what this team could do with some of the recruits contributing! GO BOWS!

Wow now I’m excited for next season and beyond. Wonderful recruiting class. I was worried whether this staff could recruit. With Coach Robin now in her 3rd years season. I think the incoming players know what to expect.

Before UH’s announcement, many posts had Hanna as 6-3. Did she shrink?

Oh well, I remember, Anjelica came into UH listed at 6-2 and then ended here career being listed 6-3 so who knows! LOL!

Exciting seasons ahead with all the young talent coming in!
Is this it for new recruits for this coming season?
I’m so worried there will be no back up setter for Norene or am I missing something???

Besides #3’s stating that UW is coming to play Hawaii in the Fall 2019 WVB Season, which non-conference teams will Hawaii play during the season?

  10. rabbit ears April 16, 2019 10:49 am

#8 Bailey Choy. Then we can go back to 6-2. She ain’t no backup.

Maglio and Ozee named National Pairs of the Week.

I believe they still have two scholarships open so Ah mow may not be done with transfers?

I know with all this talent coming in Coach will put the best team on the floor, but you can use only 6 at a time so some players will be on the bench. Hope out-of-staters don’t get homesick and leave early, give Coach Santos and Hawaii a chance on how special it’s to play on this team and for this state. GO WAHINE’S

Hanna is being listed on the rosters of the Swedish U19 as 189cm. I believe that translate to 6ft 2.4 inches so she is tad taller than 6-2 and a tad shorter than 6-3 ….so I making her 6-3 is not that much of a stretch.

    new thread up for Tuesday.
    6. She spells it Robyn, not Robin.
    9. only teams I am aware of are Washington, UCLA, West Virginia and perhaps Utah Valley. but UH won’t announce schedule until contracts are signed.
    10. Bailey Choy has not committed to UH yet. We’ll see if she ends up here. Wouldn’t be surprised.
But am pretty sure they’re getting a foreign player who is a setter for fall.
    11. thanks. it is up on the new thread
