Same lineup for Hawaii: Stijn van Tilburg, Colton Cowell, Rado Parapunov, Joe Worsley, Gage Worsley, Dalton Solbrig, Patrick Gasman.
BYU goes back to its starters after sitting Gabi Garcia Fernandez and Davide Gardini
Freshman setter Brody Earnest.
So glad that I can watch today. Hawaii played awesome defense and won the first set 25-20.
Hawaii wins set 1 – 25-20
Saw those large pinwheels held up by students. Aren’t things like that illegal (visual/noisemakers)?
Charlie Wade wasted a challenge on a net call against Solbrig. It was evident that Solbrig’s elbow touched the net in the second set. He needs to save his challenges when they would really count. I can only hope it won’t come back to haunt him.
1-2. updates being posted in main box.
3. Agree about the pinwheels. Wade has had a discussion about them. We’ll see if they do anything about it. Seems like the NCAA code of sportsmanship doesn’t apply in Smith
4. Evidently not. I think that their yelling into the ears of the servers makes the biggest noise of all. It’s amazing that the servers can block out all that noise.
4. As Wade said, his players are veterans, particularly the international guys, who are used to hostile environments.
Charlie Wade’s second challenge was legitimate, but now he has only one left.
8. it is what it is. I wish VB would do like NFL. If your challenge is good, you can keep it.
Great job by Wade. It is about time someone complains about the fans at BYU. Hawaii fans don’t treat BYU teams like that.
The announcers are so pro BYU. Wish Chris McLaughlin would be like that. He is always so politically correct. If he says something good about Hawaii, in the next sentence he says something good about the opposing team. The other announcers don’t care They are just pro their teams.
10. it’s called being professional and objective, which is what UH’s announcers are. BYU announcers are on BYUTV.
BYU Coach Sean Olmstead went over to the fans at the service line and told them to stop kicking the barrier when Hawaii is serving (per BYUtv floor reporter)
I have a question about the pinwheels. Are they supposed to be illegal? Are they truly distracting? How can they be worse than all the fans positioned right behind the server, screaming into his ears, while separated only by a flimsy banner?
Wow not sure if that has ever happened but Wade complained to the ref about BYU fans behind the barriers, the red spoke to head coach of BYU, BYU coach approached Wade, spoke quickly then went over to the fans who apparently were kicking the barrier directly in back of the UH servers and told them to not do that again. So at least someone said something, not sure if that has ever been addressed in the middle of the match in the past. Have never seen with my eyes how close they are, its intense. Lets go Warriors!!!
11. You are right. I stand corrected.
I do think Gasman should be nominated for something this week.
Hawaii dominating. I love it.
This is so great.
HOW are the BYU fans allowed to be so close to the opponent server, essentially shout RIGHT in the ear of the server?
Not very BYU.
Ah. Doesn’t seem to be mattering right now. WARRIORRRRRRRRRRRRRS!!!!!!
These BYUTV commecials/ads! Didn’t know they used Crypo-currency so much in Provo. All of Utah?
I love the fact that even tho Rado isn’t having the most awesome match, everyone else has stepped up and is making up for it. Incredible.
Just wow!!!!
9. FIVB allows two challenges per set in international matches, whereby the coach can keep the challenge if justified. Wish NCAA would follow the example of FIVB. Maybe in the more distant future.
CHEEEEE 60 straight sets! lets get it UH!!!! We haven’t won at BYU since 2003. Gasman hit 909 against BYU, known for their blocking. Good job boys!!!!
Gee. Smith Fieldhouse faithful started leaving early if mine eyes-for-TV serves me correctly. Guess they get sore throat from all that yelling.
So the most daunting challenge on the road will be at Long Beach next month. BYU announcers predicted that Long Beach would sweep UH both times on the road. Maybe they are counting their eggs before they hatch. If UH proves them wrong in any way or manner, it would be egg in their face, even if UH loses in four or five sets, let alone wins in any number of sets. They sure jumped the gun.
Wow. That game lived up to the hype. I’d been watching BYU’s matches this year to see how they were doing. I was worried about how Hawaii might deal with the altitude and the atmosphere. But they seemed to really dial in and play well today. This has been one of the best serving matches that the bows have had since the beginning of the year against NJIT and Concodia.
Great win! UH just taking care of business…I’ll bet the BYU coach wishes he didn’t let last night’s match slip away…not only do they have a loss at home to an unranked team, but they did NOT beat UH…this team is just amazing!
I heard mostly wows and praise for UH from the BYU TV announcers. Like saying UH has everything, etc.
updates in main box
also, USC up 2-0 on the Beach at the Galen.
28. If anyone wants to watch the USC LBSU match, it is here: https://pac-12.com/live/usc
Stationary camera
USC leads 15-10 in the third
27-28. USC might sweeeeep LBSU!!!
wait what?!?! how is the beach down 2?? Are they down players from their usual starting rotation?
Wow!!! Just wow!! USC over LBSU!!
BREAKING NEWS!!!!
Come Monday, UH WILL BE RANKED #1
LBSU LOSES to USC 3-0 in Los Angeles
UH should be unanimous #1 on Monday…I know, I know, the poll doesn’t mean anything…it’s just nice to get some recognition…wonder who will be POW…Stijn, someone from USC or someone from McKendree
33. Defalco hit .100, Ensing at .154, LBSU at .215
USC hit .493 for the match
Wow, so not like the polls mean anything, but what are the chances of UH being #1 wen it comes out monday?
The Galen looks like a crackerbox…
I do dislike our format. I have been updating the Beach scores in main box.
anyway. 49ers lose 25-21, 25-21, 25-17
Galen is pretty large. 10,258
Hmmm, was it in North?
As for being No. 1, I can’t imagine that Hawaii won’t be.
It wasn’t in the Galen Center it was inside of North Gym at USC. Very Klum like with no air con.

All fans, please note that both UH matches at San Diego next week (29th and 30th) will be on ESPN3 at 4pm HST, 7pm PDT.
this men’s team this season is nothing but INSPIRING. i really do hope this men’s team can rub off on to the women’s team. i typically don’t watch the men’s volleyball team, but with this years team, it’s impossible not to. GREAT JOB WARRIORS!
anyone know where i can watch a replay? fell asleep and didn’t wake up in time to even watch
39. thanks. now it makes sense.
The USC match was played in the SC North Gym. Think Klum Gym. Small, hot, cramped, loud. It was a factor.

Cindy, who were the two Wahine players held out by flu in the spring match?
All tournament team?
Phenomenal Team. WOW!!
27. I agree…the commentators were very complimentary towards UH (especially Gasman)…I especially liked how they kept saying that Hawai’i really is as good as everyone says…
#24: That’s not how I heard it. IIRC, announcers were musing whether UH could finish the entire season without losing a set, and that’s when one of them said that they’re not likely to sweep at Long Beach State, and emphasized that they certainly wouldn’t do so on both nights. Bottom line: Announcers were quite complimentary to UH throughout the match.
just watched the game, omg the fans are ridiculous. i honestly think fans shouldn’t be that close. this reminded me of when the Wahine would play NMSU, i remember how the Wahine were extremely not pleased with the way their fans were towards them.
42. Ashley, you’re in luck.
Here is the link to the replay. I was surprised that it was made available so fast despite their loss.

Hello?!? Not sure what part of the match you were listening too but the majority of their compliments were back-handed. They were quite obnoxious and somewhat oblivious to the sport in general.
“they’re not likely to sweep at Long Beach State, and emphasized that they certainly wouldn’t do so on both nights.” … To me is not exactly something that I would call complimentary.
49. Replace your divots, they said after the kill.
53. The announcers were awestruck, kept saying wow, etc.
55.
Were we watching the same match? There were compliments made toward Hawaii. But that wasn’t the case throughout the whole match. There was another comment made about “who says that volleyball is a girl’s sport. They need to watch Van Tilburg and such and such.” I mean it wasn’t exactly directly insulting but kind of like… ‘exactly what are you trying to say?’
Sorry i’m not as forgiving on the BYU announcers as you are. They were just about the worst that i’ve heard in a long time. At least they knew a little about the sport but they sounded very immature and the way they said things were in a way that ‘high-schoolers’ would if they were calling the match with the kind of comments they were making. I hope that isn’t a representation of BYU (Utah) people.
56. So you heard something completely different from what I heard. To me they were saying that for those who think that only “girls” play volleyball (in other words that “real men” don’t play volleyball) just need to take a look at Stijn and Patrick Gasman. It was a compliment to Hawaii, albeit a kind of sexist way.
On the whole the announcers were very complimentary towards Hawaii.
57.
Yup it was different. Glad Hawaii announcers aren’t that obnoxious. Maybe due to what people expect from BYU announcers there’s some sort of bar of expectation that is already set so low that when something that isn’t 100% negative is said it’s considered complimentary. Glad Hawaii won’t be playing there again for a while.
People only hear what they want to hear.
Apparently so.
From before the match started , the announcers were raving about UH, like the hitting stats of Rado and Stijn. As the match went on, they didn’t think BYU had much of a chance to do anything.
Could someone explain what the commentator meant when he said something to the effect of “BYU was blown out by 5, 8 & 11”? He said this after match point…
Trying to repost:
10, 11, 27, 49, 50, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60: Regarding the quality of the match announcers, I reviewed the pre-game and set 1 video (don’t have the time or patience to do this for sets 2 & 3), and found the announcers to be highly, highly complimentary of UH with a few attempts at humor, some of which was puerile (similar to friendly jawing on the playground between athlete friends). In only one instance was their humor borderline inappropriate, when speculating about Gasman being 300+ pounds, and harping on it. Remove the puerile humor and the quality of the broadcast is similar to Spectrum Sports’.
But the data is below. This is a mix of descriptions of comments, paraphrasing and exact quotes:
On the shorter Joe Worsley, “He’s just a baller. He’s 6-1, he doesn’t look like he’s gonna dominate a match, but he’s got all the skills you can see and a bunch you can’t see.”
“Van Tilburg, great serve out of the timeout.”
“Gasman is actually soft blocked, it’s a miracle”, given that Gasman was having a great match
On Gasman, “It’s not just that he’s 6-10, it’s that he’s strong and can jump”
“There’s a good Hawaiian contingent behind the bench”
“That’s an amazing play by [Joe] Worsley there”
have trouble posting things, so i gave up on the rest of the quotes
62. Point differentials in each of the three sets: UH won by 5 in set 1, 8 in set 2 and then 11 points in set 3
67. Thanks! That just went right over my head…
wow….the commentators were complimentary of Hawaii. The comment about Hawaii not losing another set for the rest of the year was totally valid. They were saying that LBSU is so good that Hawaii could beat them, just not in 3. And definitely not in 3 both nights. (Although, LBSU has shown in recent matches that they are beatable).
As for the “volleyball is for girls” comment, they were addressing thoughts that volleyball is not a man’s sport. They were saying those negative stereotype people should watch this Hawaii men’s team play.
Hawaii is so exciting this year because they are SO physical in everything they do, hitting, blocking, and serving. They play defense so fast and the speed of the offense is so fast. There is sometimes no block up or HUGE holes in the block.
This is team is special and we only have a few more opportunities to watch them in person.
They also made the comment about the rainbow name or the rainbow on the jerseys. Something like they play proudly with that name. Unlike some fans who want to get rid of rainbows.
Who is the 4th guy in aloha shirt? Way on the right side?
Well, no one said those BYU announcers are right.
The official UH-M athletic logo is hr drake green H wih black, white, and silver trimmings. The rainbow is a memory when it comes to UH-M athletics. An anachronism. A cute dinosaur at best.
The President of BYU or the AD should do something about the shameful behavior of the fans behind the serving line.I realize this is in their DNA but it’s crossing the line when they use the pinwheels to
distract the UH servers. Charlie Wade is probably the only VB coach to bring this to the attention of the ref and BYU coach.
As for the commentators, I found them to be very complimentary of the Hawaii team in a very amusing way.
If this team could handle BYU on their home grounds, then they should do the same at LBSU.
If BYWho can use those pinwheels, why can’t UH bring back the balloon brigade? Remember the student section at MBB waving balloons when the opposing team was at the FT line?
#71. That’s Matt Larson, the student manager. He was a reserve MB last year, he would be a R-So this year if he was playing. He wants to get into coaching.
If anyone has AppleTV, the BYUtv app has the game replay.
Who is the guy with the beard ? Eric Mathews ?
The bearded guy looks like Josh Elms…Kelly Majam’s husband. He is part of the UH strength and Conditioning staff and was probably brought along due to UH extended stay on the mainland. Need to keep the boys in shape.
If anybody thought that Hawaii could take down BYU in Provo, they’d be crazy.
To do it in 3 sets? Beyond impossible.
However, the team pulled through and definitely didn’t disappoint the fans. Gasman’s 10 kills in 11 attempts? Wow…never has this happened in a long while since Stijn’s freshman campaign against King (14-0-15) where he hit .933 hitting percentage. Gasman’s .909 is really a scary number and not easy to do that against a really difficult opponent in BYU. But his companions Stijn and Rado pretty much bailed the team out and gave BYU difficulties to get their middles involved. The middles for BYU a combined 0-for-5 with one error. Last year, BYU’s middles spanked us big time, going 12-for-15. If I had to guess, it must have been Hawaii giving BYU pressure from the service line because they bashed 10 service aces while only committing 14 service errors. Not a bad ratio for Hawaii, considering that they gave BYU fits with their defense, mostly on digs. They got more chances to attack the ball more often than anticipated, and did contain Davide Gardini, who was the concern heading into the game. He and Gabi were the one-two punch on offense and what did concern me was how Davide was going to respond after a rough beating on Princeton, where he hit negative for the match and how he was going to respond. But, Hawaii did a good job feasting over BYU’s young offense and gave BYU it’s biggest bruising since 2003.
BTW, Cindy Luis, if you’re looking at this, Lewis got upsetted by Ball State in 5 and got their first loss around in the same timespan that USC took out LBSU in 3 and Hawaii winning in 3 on BYU in addition to Pepperdine bashing UC Irvine in 3. Princeton still leads the EIVA at 10-12 with a 9-1 conference record, and Lewis still leads the MIVA at 18-5 and 9-1 in conference play. Conference Carolina’s got Barton leading 17-3 and 11-1 by a slim game difference behind King, in which Hawaii swept in the Outrigger Tournament. And UCLA leads the MPSF at 16-6 and 6-2 overall. So, more likely than not, these recent upsets could change the gameplay in the rankings and how each of the other conferences could play up for a berth in the NCAA.
But boy was that a bad time to see LBSU get taken out by USC. Right around this time, if you take your foot off the gas pedal at any given moment, chances are that you’ll likely get upsetted by a weak team. But wow, I really did not anticipate LBSU losing the way they did in North Gym. Now it’s a matter of how well the remaining games go for the Big West, MPSF, EIVA, MIVA and Conference Carolinas.
On another subject, (And I know that this is off-topic to this) I have noticed that there were some rumored posts that Trinity Castaneda pretty much left (And transferred) out of the WVB. So…I’m now starting to question could Robyn may be wanting to find another recruit before season’s start or is it going to be too late to do that?
Trinity have been gone for a couple of months already. I think she left at the beginning of the spring semesters if I am not mistaken.
Rumor is UH is still looking for someone to replace Trinity. Hopefully someone as impactful as Jolie Rasmussen. If we can get another potent pin hitter(LS or OPP) , we can allow our freshmen middles to take a little more time to develop. Right now, we are a one man team(Rasmussen). We need our other players to step up or we need to hope for a transfer or somebody like Riley Wagoner come in a surprise the heck out of everybody.
65. My favorite commentary was when one of them said as BYU served to UH…
“Cal, Worsley, Gasman, Kill!”
He kept saying Cal for Colton Cowell, lol!
81. “Hawaii’s good.”
“They’re not good, they’re great!”
All of this, will be meaningful, IF ….
And that’s a BIG IF, We can WIN that ONE MATCH that we want to be in.
I believe now, CHAMPIONS OR BUST ….
