Thanks for all of the comments on our paper’s sale.

Like I said, I’m out of the loop, so I have no idea what will happen. But whether I have a job in two months or not, I’m sure this blog will go on in some form or not. One of our readers owns the rights to the name, but as I’ve said all along, the blog is owned by all of you. Whatever we’ve had here was created by the readers.

I’m going to miss Gannett. It paid my mortgage and my children’s tuitions. It gave me unbelievable opportunities. And, most of all, it created a more diverse newsroom.

Guess that makes sense that Gannett is selling instead of buying. But I almost consider the Kapiolani building a landmark. I would expect ST will have the UH beat and the blog in the end…if he wants it.

ST — maybe it’s time to think about opening that BBQ Sports and Karaoke restaurant. You work the real sports bar portion…

    Good night!

    Good night!

  4. Stephen Tsai February 26, 2010 1:50 am

Actually, I always envisioned ending up as one of those old men sitting in front of Ala Moana Sears.

    GIVE ME SUNDAYS BEST

    to the post #4……….

    that’s creepy

    goodnight

  7. Mike February 26, 2010 2:00 am

Big Bro is right, Gannett did bring us a much more diverse newsroom. There are editors from all over the Mainland here.

  8. Mike February 26, 2010 2:02 am

One of my wiseass students: “Mr. Tsai, if you get laid off, will we get our papers back faster?”

  9. Stephen Tsai February 26, 2010 2:18 am

It’s not about layoffs. It’s about pickups.
We’re not getting cut from the team.
We’re trying to find out if we make the team. (And right now I’m the fat kid sitting on the bench.)

  10. SteveM February 26, 2010 2:19 am

ST — I’m still awake and maybe a little silly…but… stick with the orginal plan as a backup/fall back option. Remember when you said you wanted to open a BBQ restaurant with Bulla, DPK, and I?

We insisted we needed Al (as the bouncer). But homey is a better bouncer so Al can be the executive chef. Bulla is the bartender. DPK the maitre’d. I’ll run the karaoke portion with pride.. Maybe we can get Tina to moonlight as the head waitress. You would have a desk/conference table in the sports bar area where we have fourteen 52″ Bravia’s on the walls along with the karaoke system. HD, of course.

Kekoa and Addknowjoe can be in charge of live entertainment, but Mrs. Bulla is in charge of the dancers.

…and… we set up a small blog server in your living room if needed. 🙂

  11. Stephen Tsai February 26, 2010 2:25 am

I still want to own a BBQ place.
I think I’ll call it: Have A Cow.

  12. BigWave96744 February 26, 2010 2:48 am

    Wow Stephen,
The whole family is up, huh?
Maybe you guys should bust out the Chinese Lion and Pots and Pans and go wake up the A-House Ohana…. 🙂

  13. BigWave96744 February 26, 2010 2:54 am

    Stephen,
Are many newspapers agency’s closing up shop, around the Nation?
I remember hearing how the internet and the twitter generation will one day make printed newspaper obsolete.

BTW, I really feel for you all.
Within the last year the Tiser has had paycuts, mass layoffs, more paycuts, union discrepancies, more pay cuts, etc yet you folks continue to provide a great product.

  14. Stephen Tsai February 26, 2010 3:00 am

    ST,

Got my fingers crossed your services will be retained; however, worst case senario….would you be able to host your own independant sports-website?, maybe preceeded by an,(i)?, as in, (iTsaiFootball), etc.
Solicit advertisers to your site, etc.

    Just a thought???

  23. Zonkytalker February 26, 2010 4:47 am

    ST,

Reduce stress if you have it …. well family time, surf, beach, yoga…drink…eat…sex (:-). Really…..I do not think you have a thing to worry about…IMO…you have done outstanding work in Hawaii sports and no one doing the things like you…besides…you have a following…meaning the guys on this blog…many like me who just read and not post much…but…when pushed…we will fight hard for you…become very, very vocal and very visable…and LOUD. I’m hea for U if its gets to that point…but like I said…if management at the paper knows anything about Hawaii sports news….you da man.

  27. RainbowCliff February 26, 2010 5:10 am

Good Morning Tsaiko Nation, The Bows sink to the botttom of last place with NO sight of turning it around. Man all I can say is Bob really blew his opportunity of a dream job he always wanted BUT lacked the foundation of how a Head Coach has to game plan and manage the game it self. Running a 1976 Flex Offense created by Santa Clara Coach Carrol Williams was “DOOMSDAY” from the start and blaming his players for their lack of hustle, concentration and preperation for games lost leads to one thing “He was never ready to be a Head Coach as you don’t blame your players, you blame yourself”.

If Bob has any PRIDE he should just resign and save some salvation to his Fab 5 name BUT I gather going out in a blaze of glory will be his swan song as he will need a “MIRACLE” for him to be retain and continue to Head Coach the Bows !

Losing is a mental thing and it is obvious that this team “TRY” as it may be has lost it’s confidence in them selves, play with no urgency and continue to spiral the basketball program down to it’s lowest point of existance that I can ever remember playing and now watching the Bows after my elgibility was finish.

The BIGGER question is who will UH bring in to salvage the program and bring back pride and respect as it will take more then 3 years to get the basketball program back to respectability as Bob with all his promises of fast break ball and all out man to man pressing defense has laid the biggest goose egg and fooled himself on his dream job being his worst nightmare.

Well Tsaiko Nation got to go DOMINATE my athletic game in LA as Tennis is on the agenda and balling in Magic’s gym after as I need to hit BIG on the forehand and pinch post on the block as Star Bulletin got me piss with their hostile take over on the HA and my Bows keep losing as I got to take it out on somebody SO LA will be taking a whooping today as rain is forecast over the weekend. Have a good morning folks as one thing for sure “it can’t get any worse, can it” ?

  28. NYUH February 26, 2010 5:17 am

SB’s sports news has been lacking. ST will be a much needed addition.

    http://www.buildingthedam.com/2010/2/25/1326957/paaluhi-leaves-osu

Oregon St. middle linebacker David Pa’aluhi has pulled out of school, in order to join the armed forces. Pa’aluhi, from Waianae, Hawaii, started all 13 games in the 2009 season as a sophomore, and was penciled in as the starter next season, until deciding to heed a higher calling.

  29. gmahoney February 26, 2010 5:17 am

ST, whatever happens, you have the support of the many thousands of people who read this blog. Some don’t post, but many read it daily. If you have to go, just let us know where, we’ll be there….Back to lurking.

  30. CHEE! February 26, 2010 5:34 am

I recall David’s Dad was also a good football player in H.S., MMA fighter, a Warrior…Like father, like son. SEARIDERS!!

“Oregon St. middle linebacker David Pa’aluhi has pulled out of school, in order to join the armed forces. Pa’aluhi, from Waianae, Hawaii, started all 13 games in the 2009 season as a sophomore, and was penciled in as the starter next season, until deciding to heed a higher calling.”

  31. Garret February 26, 2010 5:37 am

I’m really worried about the potential loss of jobs, which will reduce the coverage of important stories in Hawaii.

From what I read today, the Advertiser has about 600 employees (120 in the newsroom) and the SB and MidWeek together have about 300 employees (75 in the newsroom). So, the 300-employee newspaper is losing money and just bought the paper with twice the employees…looking at the numbers that is scary.

  32. Bulla February 26, 2010 5:50 am

    ST
whew, what a difference a day makes. you and your ohana are in our prayers, and the dust just needs to settle….and let the initial shock wear off. either way, it’s the unknown that makes it challenging, but you’ll know soon enough. and your job is to take care of #1,…….you……our blogging ohana is just that, your blogging ohana, we’re not your employer.

i believe that you’ll come out of this alright, but who am i…..know this, i feel you bring too much to the table, and you generate more bang for the buck than any other sportswriter in this town…..ESPECIALLY when it comes to UH Warrior Football….

be blessed, your Tsaikos got your back 🙂

  33. jm2375 February 26, 2010 6:00 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

    Go get ‘um bhf2!!

Ditto to #23 & #29. Always know, ST, that we got your back!

  34. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc February 26, 2010 6:38 am

BHF2 – will call you later on today after my eyeballs get de-dialated. .

Newspapers all over the country are dropping dead or consolidating. As I say in David Shapiro’s blog below – Freedom of the Press has been re-named. FREEDOM FROM THE PRESS. Aloha & Sayonara to an involved public in public policy issues.

As someone who has been working with both print and electronic journalists for most of my life, I am very concerned about thiese Mergers and Acquisitions & their impacts on one of our core freedoms.

    X your fingers for me.

It’s too bad the new owner didn’t buy the Advertiser building.
To be sure, it needs fixing. But it’s a great building in a pretty good location.

That the “brick and mortar” asset was excluded from the sale kinda speaks volumes for the path that the buyer envisions.

    Good mornin’ Tsaiko crew!

I’m putting myself on alert for ways to make the new ownership appreciate the talents of our blogmeister.

Periodic listings of his true worth bears repeating:

  50. Kona Glory to God February 26, 2010 7:35 am

Mr. RainbowCliff sir, #27 – As you and many others have rightly voiced, Coach Nash has not got the job done. His teams have not improved and the talent level is subpar even with the injured players included. I don’t think anyone can deny that, but you seem to have some negative past history with him and certainly seem to have a bone to pick with him. You say quite clearly that he has done nothing for UH, ever. You say he doesn’t give a damn about UH, he blew his chance and so on. Were all open to criticism I guess, but in my opinion, I don’t think his head coaching results can encompass his entire UH legacy and what he has done for UH, from being a player to assisting Coach Wallace or his worth as a person. You say no one knows the inside happenings of UH like you do, and no one has tried to do anything for UH alumni but you, and no one has more pride than you and no one has more heart than you and your tennis is dominating and posting in Magic’s gym and so on. Even when you make a sympathetic overture to honor Coach Rocha you feel compelled to mention your trophy and awards room. Now granted you have done much community and youth work and have been merited for many others things and I most certainly tip my hat to you, but humility isn’t one of your better traits it seems. I am writing this because none of us are perfect and none of us know it all. You speak of God and all his glory and power and yet you seem to have hate and unforgivingness in your heart. No, we are not perfect and that is all this writing is about. Criticism and opinions are fine, but the message they carry is more effective a voice when done with humility and grace. Let the power speak.

  51. postmanke February 26, 2010 7:40 am

lol @ fat kid sitting on the bench..

If I’m the new coach of a newspaper company and i have a kid sitting on the bench that is bringing people to the game day in and day out, that bubba kid ain’t going nowhere! I’d also give him the resources to bring in/attract more people to the game by expanding the technology he is using to capture viewership. – throwing everything else out the door, it just makes business sense. I dont think the coach will want to throw viewers out of the game. esp when it cost so much to attract them.

more viewers = more revenue. wonder how much more attractive this blog will be if we start clicking the ad’s in the blog for the next 6-8 weeks?

fat kid on the bench + know’s the plays + bringing in the fans is a great position to be in.

  52. Garret February 26, 2010 7:42 am

I’ve seen quite a number of people taking shots at the Star-Bulletin here and in other places, but I do NOT think that will help ST and I wish that would stop. Over the next few weeks the people that run the Star-Bulletin will decide on the fate of this blog and on ST’s employment…and it would not be good for ST if his blog is considered anti-SB.

People are upset and want to vent, I totally understand that. But venting in a way that could hurt ST’s job and this blog may not be the way to go if you truly wish to support him.

  53. koakane February 26, 2010 7:49 am

    good morning tsaiko country

adding my 2 pennies, I have to believe the investors have to be really nearsighted not to retain the one of the better assets HA has in ST. I am not going to say or post anything cause he will be one of the retained. nuff

congrats to the bball warriors on their victory over the ducks from oregon. wishing them success the rest of the series. ditto to the vballer against the cats from bywho.

somber but true statements from rainbow cliff. many mixed feeling about cnash the man vs the coach. super person who loves what he is doing but has had problems in caring out the future of warrior basketball. in the long run the institution has to maintain it standards like we all do and sometime we have to make hard choices.

eh you all have a good aloha friday remember play nice

  54. Bigislandkurt February 26, 2010 7:50 am

    Tsai….
The darkest part of the night is yet to come…….but remember, the darkest part of the night is right before dawn. You and your co-workers will be alright. Ask anyone who worked for Aloha……anyone who worked for the Ka’u Sugar Company……anyone who lives on Moloka’i. It’s gonna be rough, but you guys will be ok. Garanz.

As for you personally…….you’re a state-wide Icon brother. Greater things await you. YOu watch.

    BIK

  55. koakane February 26, 2010 7:51 am

  56. Bigislandkurt February 26, 2010 7:56 am

Shareholders don’t know people. They know the bottom line. Is there something wrong with that? You decide. Some of us are shareholders. Maybe not for Gannett, but we do hold stocks in other companies. Have we ever taken the time to wonder just what transpired (at the employee level) that led to a better reporting on the stock? We stand behind the cloak of re-organization, and somewhat lend a blind eye to the real life human stories behind re-organization.

  57. anonymous February 26, 2010 7:59 am

If there’s hope. It has to come to pass that the SB finds a buyer. At this point that is what I’m rooting for.

  58. Stretch February 26, 2010 8:09 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

I haven’t read everyone’s post of the purchase but this is my take on things from what I have read/watched on the news.

the Star Bulletin did NOT buy the Honolulu Advertiser to take it over. Black, the OWNER of SB bought HA. He wants to get rid of the SB, not HA. If there is no taker for the money losing SB, then there will be a merger but HA will remain. It is not necessarily SB’s call who stays and who goes. It could actually be HA’s call who they bring along from the SB?? It’s sad that there will probably be a merger but it’s not doom for HA. I would be more concerned if I was working at the SB.

Now, there is concern for the HMLM site. That is still owned by Gannett and not part of the sale. Esme could continue the site on her own, but will not have the support of HA to help with marketing and ad sales.

  59. duffer (iPhone) February 26, 2010 8:14 am

I don’t think Coach Nash’s contributions to UH can be counted by wins/losses.

I have never played basketball as Rainbow Cliff but I have been to numerous games as well as watched many more on TV.

It’s unfortunate and sad that one man’s worth is judged by wins and losses.

  60. RedZone February 26, 2010 8:15 am

I have been buying the Advertizer for over 40 years. I have told them in the past that if they dump ST I will dump them. I think it is time that I do this again.

  73. Slugger February 26, 2010 9:07 am

    Good morning!

ST is a much better sports reporter than the SB’s. When I lived in AZ reading the news online, I started out reading the SB (I liked their Island Images pictures), but the UH sports reporting was much better on the HA site. So, I switched my priorities. Since the SB is being sold, I hope more of the HA writers & editors are kept since it’s the more successful paper. JMHO

    Kazz,

    Thanks for the softball reporting.

  74. Slugger February 26, 2010 9:08 am

    Give me Sunday’s best.

Thanks, HiFlyer, for a Saturday ticket.

  75. Da Punchbowl Kid February 26, 2010 9:08 am

Prayers for all the HA and SB employees.

But like others here have said, ya gotta believe that Tsai will land shiny side up after all of this!

  76. Garret February 26, 2010 9:10 am

Black apparently bought the Star-Bulletin for *$10k* when it was put up for sale last time. I wonder how cheaply he will be selling the Star-Bulletin now.

The unfortunate thing is that he is publicly saying that the Star-Bulletin is losing money, and that with a workforce of 300. If he’s concerned about costs (which is his track record in other acquisitions), then the combined 900 employees of the Advertiser and Star-Bulletin have to be concerned…

  77. Garret February 26, 2010 9:12 am

Frankly, I’m not worried about ST, since he’s an established writer. However, I am concerned for many other people at both the Advertiser and the Star-Bulletin who don’t have the prominence and platform that ST has…

  78. al February 26, 2010 9:13 am

haven’t been keeping up with the ha buyout.

however, makes sense to me that you buy a successful business to enhance your possessions not to dismantle it. if logic stands to reason then i don’t see the product (ha) altering too much other than the back of the house. the resources that could be combined such as the actual production of the physical newspaper will probably be combined.

  79. Da Punchbowl Kid February 26, 2010 9:14 am

    Draggin’ this over from yester-blog:

” I was at UH and missed the meeting.”

And that ladies and gentlemen, is the long and the short of it. Tsai takes care of business.

And that is why this is such a great blog.
That is why hundreds of read people and post here regularly.

Because of our blog host’s tireless efforts and devotion to both his readers and to UH sports, the Warrior Beat has become an institution.

This blog, and Stephen Tsai serves the public and UH athletics like few other media entities do. The new powers-to-be should never forget that.

    Nuff said.

Some of the video is hard to see. I’ve added circles and arrows around some of the Linemen and backers that are hard to find. Not all of the kids had videos. All the heights and weights were what we took of them when they visited the school, so may be different than what is on the internet.

I thought you may enjoy seeing it.

    breaking rice bowls…

perhaps the intent of the new owners is to save the sinking star bulletin. purchasing the successful circular and then merging the common production related functions could help save the sb and make the ha more profitable.

i believe that the core of the ha will still be intact.

  84. Da Punchbowl Kid February 26, 2010 9:25 am

    Hey Paka-

Was it you who posted something about Coach Reinbold yesterday? I missed it.

  85. Manoa Mist February 26, 2010 9:25 am

Have always said that when it comes to sports writing in Hawaii, after Jim Easterwood retired, Stephen and Dave Reardon have been the best. Just IMHO. Imagine the two of ’em on the same paper. Now that would be awesome.
But the new owner is going to renegotiate the contracts with the union, or even go non-union. Regardless, if you’re lucky enough to be selected to continue with the paper, it’s going to be for much less pay and benefits for the average worker.
Yesterday was a dark day in Hawaii newspaper history, but a day everyone knew was coming soon. I have a lot of friends at both papers, great people, dedicated folks, and I hope the best for all of them.

  87. Garret February 26, 2010 9:26 am

Wow, I guess it is good for Colt that Zorn was fired…

Former coach Jim Zorn wanted to cut Brennan before the 2009 season, people familiar with the situation said. In a phone interview last month after he joined the Baltimore Ravens as quarterbacks coach, Zorn declined to discuss personnel and situations that occurred during his two seasons with Washington.

  88. Garret February 26, 2010 9:28 am

    Paka,

You put *actual* height and weight numbers for players? I thought that there was a standard “2-inch” rule that boosted the heights of all the players, so your heights are probably less than what I would find if I checked the listed heights on other sites.

  89. Paka February 26, 2010 9:29 am

    DPK,
No it wasn’t me. I didn’t have a chance to get on the internet yesterday because I was slammed at work but I just found that out not too long ago about Jeff. That’s a hard deal. Jeff is a really good guy. I’m confident he’ll come out ok and handle this.

  90. Garret February 26, 2010 9:29 am

    Manoa Mist,

Yes, one of the first things they mentioned was that they would be tearing up the union contract. People never get *more* money when that happens…

  91. Garret February 26, 2010 9:30 am

    DPK,

I posted the stuff on Reinbold. I thought that some people here would like to know. I like what Vaughn Meatoga’s Dad posted on WSN:

Coach Jeff recruited my son his senior year of high school and even flew to Kauai to meet the family to further my son’s commitment to UH. He and Ellie were also there when my wife lost her battle with cancer! There is a no greater coach in my book. Go and fight coach Jeff, we got your back on this one!

  92. Paka February 26, 2010 9:32 am

    Garret,
LOL…yeah, that is usually the rule, but we put the real height and weight. Most Texas schools do the same i think because of all the camps these kids attend. But, I agree, their HS probably have them listed a little taller and heavier.

  93. al February 26, 2010 9:33 am

#50….i agree that nash has done for this state a lot more than he has ever been credited for. there is none more loyal to the university of hawaii. there is none who works as hard as he when he was a player and as a coach.

  94. Kazz February 26, 2010 9:36 am

So nice, had to post this twice:

If the majority of the people on this blog represent a so-called minority then so be it.

If raising kala for the Wahine softball program for their wonderful 2007 run in the Super Regionals is a minority thing… Then the majority can kiss our okoles.

If buying a table at a UH fundraiser is a minority thing then the majority can go to hell.

If raising money for UH football came out of a blog party and that is considered a minority thing then the majority is LAME.

If helping to fix football training equipment is a minority thing then the majority is all talk and cannot walk.

The majority can sit on their hands and complain until the sky actually falls, the minority will just do their thing and let their actions speak louder than words.

The reason for all of this is inspiration and information.

The majority have no damn clue as to the people behind our programs. From what is needed for a mom and pop-like program such as Wahine softball to what everyday people can do to help the football program, Stephen Tsai has brought out the stories and personalities of the coaches and student athletes that the majority wishes they knew about but only the MINORITY apparently cares about.

It’ll be next to impossible to find an investor that will pick up SB and run it at status quo. Most minor and major markets have done away with their second afternoon papers. Markets themselves have grown leery of supporting more than one newsprint. Even still, the printed paper itself is falling victim to the digital age. It looks bleak for the SB.

There is a possibility that an investor could purchase the SB, eliminate it’s daily printing and transform it into a digital news source. The challenge then would be to compete against other news content providers such as TV and radio stations as well as other newspapers that have all crossed over; All of whom will have diverse venues to deliver their content other than just the internet.

To remain diverse, the investor in SB could keep a minimal printed presence and continue its very successful MidWeek line. Then have both the print and digital business arms promote one another.

It’ll be difficult to find an investor who is willing to take on a losing proposition and think outside the box. One idea is for the current SB staff to form a hui and buy it themselves.

But, if they themselves don’t have the balls to buy the SB, hard to believe anyone else will.

Then again, I’m never in the newsroom much, so maybe just being in it makes it surreal.

By the way, what does it mean when Wena, while trying to ask me about the worth of my IRA, “mistakenly” asks: How much life insurance do you have?

  125. NorthShoreFan February 26, 2010 11:10 am

Mahalo Garret for the info on one paper towns. I guess for myself, I cringe at the thought of having only one editorial or opinion section and even news coverage. We’ve enjoyed the differing articles and opinion from the competing news entities. To now be faced with only one source of news makes me worry. Look at he two papers and we see many different articles. I am used to reading both papers daily.

Let me see. We have one paper doing ok…one that is not doing well ever since it was bought (10 years ago), and the one that is not doing well is going to buy the one that is doing well and will be trying to sell itself, but if it doesn’t get sold,, will consolidate itself and in the meantime layoff half the consolidated staff and we end up with one paper any way.

ST if you decide to open that sport bar/restaurant, let me know. I like apply for one position. Used to bartend, cook pupu’s, clean bathroom, clean the bar, call the enforcers to deal with the donkey’s etc…
How about one hui go buy da news bldg., den make one BBQ place on the first floor, one sport bar on the second floor and one karaoke place on the third floor and one magazine publication section on the fourth floor?
    get one fourth floor?
anyhoo, pau rant fo da day..

Great win last night for the Baseball Warriors! Hope the series goes our way!

    GO, WAHINE SOFTBALL!

    Thanks for update, Kazz.

    Give me Sunday’s best.

The personal side of the stories that ST writes is what makes his reporting interesting. Especially since people are so connected to each other in Hawai’i, getting the side stories about the athletes, coaches & administrators keeps you looking for the next article about UH sports to see how the ‘ohana is doing, whether blood or hanai. So when Laupepa asked Stephen about his standing around at UH, yup, that’s part of the job.

Hey, what’s up next for the Super Games?

    Hiyah.

    Times are a changing.
We are shrinking into a world community and Hawaii stands in the most strategic, desirable location on the whole planet.

Mother earth is in travail and the pains are coming swifter with each passing day. If her people only believed that a new global society, freed from artificial barriers, and filled with the promise of universal prosperity was about to emerge, they would stop trying to push the baby back in and allow it to greet the dawn of the new era.

It’s not about newspapers. It’s about the sharing of information for the benefit of all concerned.

Stephen Tsai has flowed with the stream of consciousness and this blog has allowed love for the Warriors to bring this great, diverse, international population together in unity. Here, the baby is alive and thriving, surrounded by aunties and uncles who sacrifice for others every day.

    Let it grow.
    Let it grow.

    HiHo!

  145. Garret February 26, 2010 12:35 pm

    NorthShoreFan,

Here are some examples of how hard things have been for newspapers:

174-year-old Ann Arbor News (the only newspaper in the city where the University of Michigan is) closed–they created a new company that has a free website and a print edition twice a week. The few that kept their jobs had to take pay cuts.

146-year-old Seattle Post-Intelligencer shut its printing presses and became a news website with much fewer reporters.

Philadelphia used to have 2 newspapers that competed against each other, but now the Daily News is labeled an edition of the Inquirer. That way they only have to pay the wire services once since they basically merged.

Colorado’s oldest newspaper, the Rocky Mountain News (founded in 1859), closed last year.

Madison, Wisconsin used to have two newspapers…but The Capital Times (founded 1917) stopped daily publication.

Albuquerque used to have 2 newspapers until the Albuquerque Tribune (founded in 1922) closed in 2008.

Advertising sales around the country dropped 30% when you compare the 1st quarter of 2009 vs. 2008. The big loss was in classified ad revenue, which was down 42%. People use Craigslist more and more and that is free…so the newspapers get less money and it is hard for two newspapers to survive even in cities with more people than the entire state of Hawaii.

  146. Kazz February 26, 2010 12:41 pm

    FINAL

UH with 2 runs off 7 hits and 0 errors.
Oregon with 4 runs off ONE HIT and 0 errors.

Parnaby with her second loss of the season.

Wahine Softball is now 9-5 and 1-2 thus far at the Cathedral City Classic of 2010.

BIG DAY TOMORROW!!! Wahine enter the “Lion’s Den” against #9 Oklahoma and then against #2 Arizona.

SATURDAY’S ARE MADE FOR UPSETS!!! NA WAHINE ARE 1-1 AGAINST RANKED TEAMS THIS SEASON… OK FINE ONE RANKED TEAM. SO WOT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! LIKE GRAPPLE? 😆

Mrs. A-House is the assistant maite’d. Stretch is in charge of marketing…we’ll make up his duties as we go along. 🙂 One duty is to ensure the restaurant is the dinner spot and/or 19th hole for his golf tours. whitey and duffer figure prominently in this area and will manage the Maui branch when we expand.

Stretch is assisted by Koakane, who works on commission–1 greenie for every 3 new customers he brings in off the street (limit 3 cases/day). I really see (J)James as the head parking valet (who only parks and courtesy road tests convertibles).

LizKauai is in charge of advertising sales and customer relations. PowderPuff in charge of restaurant tour groups and accommodation packages . sj-macro handles the in-house photography concession.

I’m afraid of jojo, jm2375. slugger, and there’s a few others I don’t know well enough to risk insult, so I’ll let them submit their own applications. We already have…

  152. Unkanesson February 26, 2010 1:00 pm

    Howzit Tsaiko Nation,
Garrett’s post #145 causes me to interrupt my lurking to join in the discussion about the state of the media. 2 points:
Interesting coincidence — there’s an article in the Business section of today’s HA about a conference coming up on this very subject:
“The editor of Peer News, a Web-based Hawai’i news service that is set to debut in coming weeks, will be the keynote speaker at an event exploring the local news media’s challenges and transformation.
John Temple, the former editor and publisher of the Rocky Mountain News who has joined Pierre Omidyar’s Peer News in Honolulu as editor is scheduled to give the lunch talk at the March 18 event at the Plaza Club.
“NewsMorphosis 2.0″ will feature discussions about the state of the local media with a number of local media executives, including Honolulu Advertiser Editor Mark Platte and KGMB9 News Director Chris Archer.
The speakers will explore the changes occurring because of emerging technologies.”
So if the SB were to become a web-based news provider, as has been suggested, they already have competition in that arena.
Second point: Interesting concept being tried in Philadelphia that might be considered in Honolulu: merge the two papers, consolidate the wire service contracts to save money, and continue to publish with two competitive LOCAL streams.
But I’m no expert in the journalism business, so there are probably lots of reasons why it wouldn’t work…but I just feel like there’s got to be some diversity in the reporting media for it to remain a health component of our society.
Okay, back to my lurking posture…

  153. NorthShoreFan February 26, 2010 1:00 pm

    Big Mahalo Garret.
It’s because of the way we gather information or news. Most people don’t have the time or want to READ. We tend to just gather information/news by listening more than anything else. The kinds of information we are willing to gather by reading (ie. tech updates etc.) is much different than what is in the newspapers. I see more people using their iphones… etc. than reading one of our dailies. Even the retired guys who gather at McD or Zippy’s for coffee everyday! LOL!
Yes, the iphones and technology like that will allow for “easier” access to information but when I compare what I get from the two dailies over here and what I get by going to the website, it’s a bit different. (Got to watch out for misinformation too now, TG for Snopes)
I luv this blog but can’t get it or participate on it from the hard copy at the
news stand. Just one small example of technology changing things for the better. I guess the next thing coming is that we will have to pay for online subscription to the Star Bulletin or Honolulu Advertiser in order to gather news and participate on this blog.

I thought it was interesting that the Vancouver Olympics opted to use the NHL regulation size rink for these games and not the international regulation size which is larger.

Obviously it has effected the outcomes. Traditionally the European players are finesse guys and not “big bruisers” like the North Americans. In the past, many Euro NHLers got CLOBBERED in the playoffs when things got nastier and more aggressive as the smaller NHL rink didn’t allow for those skilled Europeans to play the perimeter and use their speed against the larger Americans and Canadians.

Now, traditional international hockey icons like Russia and especially Sweden are now gone…

  159. Kazz February 26, 2010 1:08 pm

People here at work seem to think those at the Bulletin should be more worried about their jobs.

The gist of things seem to remain as Black wants to run his paper as the Advertiser and not the Bulletin. So hopefully Mr. Black does understand the value of retaining that which makes what he wants so attractive to him in the first place.

  160. jojo ® February 26, 2010 1:10 pm

Are the ice hockey games being played at GM Place or Pacific Coliseum? That might tactfully explain the use of NHL-sized rink versus the international regulation sized one for ice hockey games.

Who’s willing to come coach Hawaii BB? I’m hearing Reggie Theus – he’s still being paid by the NBA, so doesn’t need a lot of dough right now. Have always admired Reggie T.
And got to hand it to Stephen Tsai. He laughs and makes jokes in the face of danger. He’s Cool Hand Luke. James Bond. Somehow I think our blog host will be fine no matter what happens.
I mean, with all the Tsaikos, is there a more popular reporter in Hawaii than Bruce Li?

Currently, there are no women sitting on the Board of Regents. I suspect that this may wind up being a significant factor in the selection process both for the planned vacancies as well as the one created by the impending resignation of the East Haai`i Regent.

The Governor will pick one individual from the list of candidates for each open seat and then send their names to the State Senate for the actual confirmation process.

The public hearing will be conducted by the Senate Committee on Higher Education chaired by Senator Jill Tokuda, District 24/Kane`ohe-Kailua. She is my State Senator and just gave birth to her second child about three weeks ago.

After the Committee makes its recommendations to the full Senate, there will be a vote. The three new Regents will be sworn into office at the beginning of the new term which begins July 1, 2010.

The replacement for the Big Island seat will sworn into office as soon as possible following the confirmation process.

If you want to support Jett Jasper, then I urge you to send a letter (preferred) or an e-mail to the Governor. Be sure to include your complete legal contact information. She will be making her choices by the end of March, but it may be much earlier than that so don’t dilly-dally.

Congrats Wahine – let’s shoot for another win this evening for them plus for the Basebows and the Raindow Warriors.

Off to bed to try to clear up my eyes from the dilation prodess. No good news to report.

Or is he opposed because, as a walk-on, he would have to pay them?

    Unkanesson..
Emerging technology is one thing but competition beween companies/corporations is another. Technology does improve efficiency but is it meant to create monopolies? Like I stated before, how often do you see one publication offer differing points of view from the same staff on the same subject? Me thinks we progress and get new ideas because we are open to different ideas and points of view and have different outlets to disseminate info. I just hope this all works out not just for the employees but for our state. I no like be like some other countries where there are only one media source.
The conference looks like and interesting one and the timing is so perfect,.. no?

Got some Tsai-kos’ going for MBA right now so got one potential COO…chefs, pastry chefs, barkeeps, “beastly” father and son “client managment” personnel, resident karaoke maestro, “burn pit” honchos, unlimited amount of beverage experts, like I said..possibilites are endless!..oh one more..gotta find one sushi guy..

Today’s statement by the principal owner of the Star Bulleting, Mr. Black, makes it clear what will happen. He does not even mention the possibility of selling the Star Bulletin (This may simply be like a “legal notice” offer for sale to satisfy antitrust concerns). He said he wants to combine the two papers into one and that there is really only room for one. Although, he wants to maintain separate editorial staff and positions.

    no kidding.

    maui specialty chocolates http://www.mauispecialtychocolates.com/index.html

    they make two kinds;

one, the most popular is chocolate and peanut butter filled mochi
the other is a truffled chocolate filled mochi.

you need to order a day in advance. so hurry.

they sell out by 1100 am. its a dollar for each mochi. expensive but worth it.

Rounding out the description of Have a Cow BBQ

Adjacent to the main dining/lounge area with 25′ stage… (hey–it is mostly upholstered bench seating like Genji’s–so no sleeping on the floor)… is the outdoor patio. The patio is called “Tailgate Patio” or similar and is managed by BG and Kazz. Koakane has his own hammock and locked storage closet for any left over “commissions”.

But on the stage, we hope to have d1島, esme, Liz, las vegas, RK, Russ and other Tsingers performing regularly. Yup, get plenty talent, we just don’t get them all assembled often. 🙂

Since the real estate requirements are growing, maybe we should ask KymryKauai…

Kymry’s “H” cookies should also be sold in “Warrior Winners”. A nice little shop specializing in UH related merchandise where a portion of the profits go directly to the UH athletic coffers. Imagine the sales of A-Joe’s T-shirts, hats, tents, umbrellas, socks, WAT (Warrior Attack Towels), etc.

  223. Ralph February 26, 2010 4:07 pm

    Correction:
UH 3 runs, 9 hits, 10 Ks; Oregon 4 runs, 11 hits, 2 Ks. UH left 10 on base. too many opportunities, too many Ks.

early season adjustments for the hitters, hopefully by the WAC season they will hit more consistently, a higher BA with players in scoring position, with player on base, and with 2 outs. Three UH players had Ks in 2 or 3 AB-Iwata, Puu Warren and Yoshikawa.

Teams in the tournament UH played in the Louisville Classic: Utah is 0-3, UNLV 1-1, Stanford 1-1. Stanford playing LBST, and Fullerton will be playing this evening.

Kona Glory To God: You don’t know me and I certainly don’t know you BUT you need to get off of this sensitivty trip and not judge me with your ridiculous comments. I don’t write to BRAG as you certainly take it that way ALL I do is speak the truth of what is going on with WHY many former mainland athletes do not get involve with UH athletics.

I don’t have any anger or grudges HECK I am doing fine and when I say I go out and play against LA Competition it’s not for bragging rights for merely PRIDE that I still can play and enjoy athletics to the HIGHEST at the young age of 51.

Your not GOD so when I use him at any time I certainly don’t need you to judge my spiritual life and question how I use his words towards anyone as you seem to think you are “holier-then-thou” as I don’t claim that title as my work and deeds speak for itself.

As Far as Bob Nash is concern I can care less what happens to his Coaching position as obvious you are his FAN and I don’t have any anger or hostility towards him as his own buddies Fab 5 bunch back stabs his coaching abilities from a reliable bow who was sitting right next to them when they got blown by a Cal Poly Technical Team. If he stays he stays if he is release he is release “WELCOME” to College Athletics as it is a win win business and obvious the team and him has not done that with poor play and no fire or desire !

Lastly, I support because I want to NOT to brag but a “PRIDE” feeling that I can support a lot of Hawaii causes because of what they did for me by supporting me through good and bad times as a former bow. I am too HAPPY in life to listen to your nonsense as I don’t have hate but nothing but love, peace and happiness SO before you go attacking me know what you are talking about as you never had met me as MANY on this blog have and they know what I am about NOT the perception that you want to tell me or imply.

You live in Hawaii and have to see good or bad athletics as I am on the mainland Kona as I see everything and have more areas to travel and a higher athletic entertainment base that you can imagine as I hope not to get in a war of words with you as I am done replying to your critical remarks towards me as I hope you WON’T reply back SIR !

Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Jeff Reinebold is battling cancer.

The receivers coach at Southern Methodist University in Texas was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in his stomach earlier this month. He has already had one operation and will undergo a second procedure in the next 10 days.

“You don’t get picked for this kind of thing unless you’re ready to handle it, so I’m like, let’s go,” Reinebold told The Sun on Friday from Texas. “That’s no false bravado, false macho stuff.

“I’m like everybody else. The first time that you hear that word, it’s like, whoa. Because the society that we live in paints this picture of everyone who gets cancer is going to die. Well, that’s not true.”

Yes. The sudden and unexpected passing of two close cruising friends in the last two months punctuates this for me. It was comforting to learn my friend squeezed in one more cruise before…well, she was supposed to do a lot more when she retired. No regrets on that account.

Tom Mui is in high demand for his tips and insights in Northern Europe cruise ports and his recently completed 14 night cruise down SE Asia. He has confirmed attending.

Everyone welcome, but note that Genji is very sleepy at lunch time. Full menu available but food service usually very slow. Plan accordingly.

Please RSVP me if you plan to attend. I promised to let Gaye know how many if we exceed 8 (so she can make sure enough food and cooked rice is on-hand). Then she will probably draft Art to help… 🙂

I was thinking along the line of the music department.

But seriously I think ST would be a GREAT journalism instructor. Who else to teach the youths.

Duffer Tsai already teaches in the community college system. He even buys them snacks for attending classes.

The Dallas Morning News had an update on Jeff Reinebold.

Anyone who’s run across SMU wide receivers coach Jeff Reinebold knows he’s one of the most energetic and spirited people you’ll ever meet. They also know Reinebold loves to surf.

It was while surfing in Hawaii during the Mustangs’ bowl trip last December that Reinebold said he “rubbed a little thing raw” on his stomach, and the irritation never healed. Reinebold said he gets a yearly physical in February when recruiting season is over, and his doctor decided to remove the lesion. It turned out to be malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer.

We’re told all the time that having a positive attitude is one of the keys to battling cancer. If so, then Reinebold is well-armed for the battle ahead.

Reinebold, 52, said he will have more surgery because, as he said, “It’s a burrowing cancer. It’s one of the more difficult ones if they don’t get it in time.”

  243. postmanke February 26, 2010 8:29 pm

Played golf today with fella who coaches a team in the USA top 25. sending 11 players to Div 1 schools from last years team – says many more young recruits coming up.. apparently he and coach Aranda go back and he still runs Aranda’s blitz packages. hasn’t been in contact with Aranda and kept saying “no shit” when i told him he got promoted to coordinator. Says he will call him and make contact. – hopefully we’ll see more top prospects from the phoenix area

  244. Stevenson February 26, 2010 8:57 pm

Mr. Black has owned the SB for 9 years and with that has developed a working relationship with many of the SB staffers. As a coach who is a new hire, he/she will select the people who he/she will feel most comfortable with including experience and LOYALTY to help he/she succeed. With that being said, do you think Mr. Black is going to not give first preference of jobs at the new paper to his current SB employees. If I’m at The Advertiser, I would really be worried. Remember, he’s buying the paper not necessarily the people. And he may believe he can improve the paper with his people.

  245. Stevenson February 26, 2010 8:58 pm

Charging for online content may be the future. What if the rate to get online news was the same price of receiving the printed paper? How many people would pay that? There would definitely be a decrease in visitors to sites/blogs?

  246. postmanke February 26, 2010 9:33 pm

245 – I am more interested to know how the new ownership will adapt the organization to produce quality news content when they do go into a subscription base business model. the status quo can not expect to produce tabloid style content and expect people to pay for it.

    RainbowCliff:

    February 26th, 2010 at 5:10 am

Have a good morning folks as one thing for sure “it can’t get any worse, can it” ?

aloha, rainbowcliff, no doubt there was much smoke and mirrors, as much as we liked to believe in change, i doubted anyone under riley wallace could run a fast tempo offense. all of wallace’s proteges knew was the azbackwards flex offense, pathetic i agree. everyone knew, but nobody wanted to say that riley set up bob to fail. riley could yell and complain but couldnt teach anything. wallace was only successful if a player had the skills coming in but he never could develop the players over time. imo, wallace was lucky to last as long as he did. the fans were overjoyed with his .500 percentage record and boring flex basketball offense. like you, i also think it would be honorable to step down so a search can begin immediately, and hoping that hawaii basketball will rebound very soon. its ironic but unlike riley who refused to step down until it was too late and forced out, bob has a chance to make amends to the current situation and do the right thing. bob, now is the time.

  248. Ralph February 26, 2010 9:34 pm

UH started off strong, but the passing and serve receive is going down hill. Hunt has to hit wisely, trying too hard to pound the ball through the block, not successful, losing precious points.

  257. Stevenson February 26, 2010 10:13 pm

Postmanke – what do you mean by tabloid-style content? SB is in a tabloid format in size but don’t they produce news and not gossip?

  258. expat February 26, 2010 10:19 pm

    Stevenson,

I have subscribed to Salon ever since they went to a subscription model which was a while ago – maybe 2000 or 2001. Salon has only ever been digitally distributed, but it is an excellent “newspaper.” I think they had concerns when they moved to the subscription or heavy advertising model but so far it has worked out for them.

The Guardian has a custom iphone application as does the AP (and other news sites). There is a opportunity to create monetized content for devices like the iPad and the dozens of similar devices that will be released by everyone and their brother. I read, or at least scan through, the web versions of both the HA and SB every day. I do not subscribe to either of course since I am in Portland. I would certainly subscribe (like I do to Salon) do a well executed digital edition.

There are no adds on Salon, for instance, for paid subscribers. It makes a difference in the experience. I wouldn’t subscribe digitally if I was still bombarded with ads.

The web version of the HA isn’t terrible, but it lacks the polish of something like Salon that relies exclusively on the web for distribution. There is no reason the new HA/SB couldn’t push the development of these new modes of distribution while simultaneously printing on newsprint. You have to be all in though.

  259. d1島 February 26, 2010 10:24 pm

Great win for BaseBows tonight. 🙂
Kudos to the pitching staff…Sisto was very effetctive. Capaul came in with a strong setup for a great save by Linsky.

Congrats to Almadova for his first D1 dinger to leadoff the win.

  260. d1島 February 26, 2010 10:26 pm

    Congratulations to the VolleyBows, too!

  261. Stevenson February 26, 2010 10:30 pm

expat – it brings up the question, which is more vital to a newspaper online business, the subscriptions or the ad revenues. Would it be better to have some subscription and more ad revenues or more subscriptions and less ad revenues.

Interesting to note that people say print is dying, MidWeek reports nearly 485,000 readers which is about 100,000 more readers than the Sunday Advertiser according to Scarborough Research which both papers use. The SB reported a readership gain of 20% since the shift to a tabloid format. The Advertiser on the other hand reported a readership loss of 9%.

  262. d1島 February 26, 2010 10:42 pm

    Give me Sunday’s best.
    …but leave out the tsunami.

    Oyasumina-tsai….

Cliffsanchezfan: MAN I just “LOVE YOU” who ever you may be. You and I are right on with the summation and you are right Wallace was fortunate to stay on as long as he did because he was arrogant to put up with as players grumble with his mean streak and that sorry flex took many running athletes out of their game BUT he did win and was better at it then his buddy Larry Little.

As far as Bob Nash goes don’t have any thing against him HELL we ran together in klum gym many times feeding him the rock for that sweet jumper he had BUT he had a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY to do good as I was happy he got the job BUT like so many of his fab 5 ego personality he refuse to except any help from any bow besides his back stabbing fab 5 buddies and firing Alika Smith before the season started showed how cold he can be as Alika was young and did not deserve that type of experience as who ever he chose in his place wasn’t worth a plum nickel looking at lost after lost after lost.

What he does now is his business as he always shown a dry personality BUT the pudding is in the cake with sad attendance, no faith from many local fans and he is getting torn apart from bloggers who blog after every Advertiser story of another lost with his so call star player Flemming with his gold adidas shoes not team shoes but GOLD shoes !

Can’t really understand it as he had NBA background, playing overseas in Switzerland I do believe and over 20 years being and assistant to the only head basketball job he ever wanted and after 3 years he is over 20 games under 500 in the lost column MAN it is so sad as I really wanted him to do well since knowing of him and playing with and against as he is a good guy and professional gentlemen.

Breaks my heart to see him go out like this BUT you got to show promise and unfortunatly their is no promise with his team or him as a head coach as the losses has been “BRUTAL” !

Cliffsanchezfan MAHALO bra always a pleasure and one day we must meet as all the beer, liquor or wine you can drink is ON ME !

  269. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc February 26, 2010 11:44 pm

If there is a tsunami, those of us on the south and east-faing shores are in for a big hit. Remember, a T gets stronger as it crosses the ocean without hitting anything along the way.

One of the few benefits of having a Bad Eye!!! is being able to trade in our upper-level seats for courtside seats. Sat in row 2 right behind Jim Donovan & his family and within spitball range of Stephen. Didn’t actually do it.

Great victory for the men’s volleyball team tonight. BYU is by far the most physical team I’ve ever seen. I wonder why some of the Big and Wide Guys aren’t playing basketball or even football.

FYI: I grew up in the restaurant business and ran one of my own in Kailua-Kona for a couple of years. I think it was Career #7. Did everything from buy fish at 5:30 am down at the docks to tending bar to doing all the desserts. Would I do it again? Probably not now, but I learned more then than I did in the 23 years I spent full and part-time in school.

Slugger: The Stadium Authority has reconfirmed its current policy about not having any swap meets on Football Saturdays. The Chair called me earlier today in response to my inqquiry call yesterday. I thanked him for the vote.

I have one ticket available for next Thursday’s baseball game against Citadel. DrDoc has a meeting to attend.

There will be a baseball/volleyball conflict on March 19 and 20. We’ll go to one on the 19th and the other on the 20th so there will be two sets of two tickets available for anyone who wants them.

Please e-mail swood at hoku dot com if you’d like a ticket or two.

Time to go to bed – tomorrow’s a hugely busy day for both of us. Sleep well.

May 22, 1960, the Chile 9.5 quake generated big tsunami in Chile, near where today’s 8.8 quake was. took out Hilo town too. and we’re supposed to repair canoes tomorrow, flying in warrior beat blogger MP to help us out. afraid he coming onna wrong day.

no matter. we can grind. gonna check the latest forecasts early am to see if its a pack and run, or game on. just love the foaming and merciless sea, when lives not in danger.

    nitey night folks.

  273. Slugger February 27, 2010 12:12 am

    W-Doc,

Thanks for the word from the Stadium Authority. The 6 pm news showed a clip of the swap meet vendors side & JD, but they didn’t say how the vote went. Glad to hear that UH will have a clear parking lot before games. Sorry for the swap meet vendors, but the stadium was built for sporting events first & foremost. Alternative swap meet days would make up for their lost revenue, if they extended their Sunday (weekend) hours. Maybe they should have a Friday swap meet…do the high schools play on Friday?

    BHF2,

Will you be putting your name in the hat?

    Ralph,

The Hawaii Opera Theatre has been in existance for 50 years. It’s their anniversary year this year. Last opera of the season is this weekend, La Boheme, musical soap opera of its day. See ya tomorrow at Murikami.

    GO BOWS!!!

  274. Slugger February 27, 2010 12:23 am

    W-Doc,

I single-handedly ran the kitchen in a bar when I lived in SF. I only did it for a month, but it was 60 hour work-weeks. Don’t think I want to own or run a restaurant. Even with free beer, it wasn’t worth it.

I might take you up on a couple of your tickets. Gotta check my calendar. Thanks.

  275. Ralph February 27, 2010 12:50 am

Tsunami warning- turn on your tv and radio by 7 am, if it is huge, you got to get out of the tsunami zones, and the time line is 11:19 am. Right now, predicted small waves but that can change. Pacific Tsunami warning center changed status from watch to alert, so, BigHilo, get your okole out of the way, find an elevation of 50 ft or more.

No one but SB and THA execs know anything. And from what I know, no one is talking. I don’t think many middle and lower managers knew anything. Amazingly it was kept secret.

BTW, I know u are not happy with terms of the current contract. I am not either. We all appreciate the efforts you and all the writers made. The deal about making or not making money is kind of a truth or dare game played by the participants. The concessions where an unhappy result of getting caught with “truth”

Good morning Tsaikos. I just got a call and it looks like the tsunami will hit as predicted. The sirens are scheduled to go off around 6 am this morning on Maui, but hope it does not. For those who are in the tsunami zone, be prepared to evacuate.

  286. whitey February 27, 2010 4:27 am

I am still hoping the tsunami does not hit Hawaii, but like bhf2 said, the last one in Chile wiped out Hilo and this one looks similar.

  287. whitey February 27, 2010 4:29 am

duffer, if the sirens go off at 6:00 am, we will need to cancel our tsaiko golf.

  288. duffer February 27, 2010 4:41 am

    Yeah, gotta go into work

  289. Garret February 27, 2010 4:49 am

I live down in Kihei and people are starting to move. I think no volleyball today. Kahului airport is in tsunami zone.

Sure hope everyone takes the tsunami warning seriously!!! Especially those who live near the coast line. Remember how waves behave — they do wrap themselves around to the opposite coast where the height of the waves could be amplified.

  307. whitey February 27, 2010 5:49 am

there goes the sirens. i can see people who were sleeping going “what the hell!!!!!”. This is good cause people getting ample notice to get to safety.

  310. whitey February 27, 2010 6:01 am

bulla, they don’t have to panic, but i can see why cause most that are here now have never seen a tsunami and have no idea except for what they saw on tv. traffic by my house is much, much more than on a regular day.

  311. whitey February 27, 2010 6:05 am

I can see that not only the traffic problem this morning, but the airport is going to be a zoo. Duffer is at work at the airport and has a new title, zoo keeper.

  312. anonymous February 27, 2010 6:05 am

Good Morning. Praying that it doesn’t happen. Gas stations, Safeway-Enchanted Lakes were full. Driving across the Pali cars were lined up off to the side near the tunnel. And at the look out areas. Hearing all the alerts on the radio and seeing people evacuating makes it appreciative that I can turn to this blog and feel comforted at this time. Prayers go out to everyone.

  313. whitey February 27, 2010 6:08 am

ST, the chocolate shop that makes the mochi will probably be closed as it is in the tsunami zone. War Memorial Gym is not, but the airport is and when it hits, runway will be under water.

A conveyor pizza oven is an excellent investment for any busy restaurant or pizza parlor that wants to keep their operation running efficiently. The advantage of a conveyor pizza oven is that you do not have to constantly check the pizza like you would have to with a traditional pizza oven. Simply place the pizza at the beginning of the conveyor, and once it comes out the other end it’s done. These units heat up and are ready to be used in under 20 minutes, and remain ready for use until shut down.
