SandBows getting ready for season opener
As coach Jeff Hall said at media day today, this weekend’s tournament might be the best of the NCAA events this week. The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic features No. 1 UCLA, No. 4 Pepperdine, No. 5 Hawaii, No. 11 Stanford and Saint Mary’s.
The previous thread asked about the starting lineup. Hall said he was playing with the 1-2 flights.
Those pairs are:
1/2. Emily Maglio-Hi’ilawe Huddleston & Morgan Martin-Amy Ozee.
3. Julia Scoles-Ari Homayun.
4. Kylin Loker-Pani Napoleon.
5. Paige Dreeuws-Sofia Russo

Luv it. Go Bows!! lol … trounce UCLA (2x NCAA NC’s; 2018, 2019) ‘-)
Hoping for a National Title 🤞
We did lose some experience with transfers, but, LOVE all the girls who are HERE!!!
Looking forward to the season.
Go BeachBows’
We did lose some beach experience with the transfer of Monkhouse but I think we got ourselves a potential star in Julia Scoles. Julia was a big time indoor player with tons of physical tools. She only lacks beach experience.
She only played one year of indoor at UNC and then suffered an injury that force her to quit indoor. I hope she can get a year back and be classified as a RS sophomore so she can play 3 years of beach here and develop.
This year’s Beach Team might have the Top 3 Flights in the nation. Yes, we lost Monkhouse, but many of the returnees like Hiilawe Huddleston has made tremendous strides and has become a legitimate # 1Flight player . Remember she was mostly a 6th and sometimes 5th Flight player replacement. The top 3 Flights again are very good and any of those 3 Flights could beat each other on any given day with the 4th and 5th Flight being a contenders in their own right. This team may be more athletic and deeper than last year! We will all be able to witness it starting this Saturday! Go Beach Bows!
4. Not sure that I agree but I guess we’ll see.
I know Huddleston has always been a good player and a little underrated but is she really good enough to play at the #1 flight without getting even that much experience at the #5 flight? I hope so, and I am sure playing with Maglio helps.
I still would have liked to see Maglio with a stronger partner and compete at the #1. She has proven she can beat almost any team in the country especially with the right partner. Mags and Ozee could have beat most teams in the country. Cal Poly had Van Winden (6’3) and Sonny (5’11) paired together today against UCLA. They could be a good matchup for Cal Poly.
Maybe there will be changes to partners once they see how the team does against #1 and #4 ranked teams.
#5. Yes I do hear you. Huddleston might remind us of a Kaiwi S. Her shots around the court are really cunning. Plus She plays fantastic defense. She has improved tremendously. Also Mags and Ozee would be an awesome pair but we are putting 2 of our best athletes on one flight and that may be detrimental to Flts 2 and 3. Anyways before I digress, after watching the Top3 Flights practice numerous times this preseason, the Top 3 Flights slated to start is a great balanced duo for each flt. Again the current Flt# 1 and Flt #2 can and has beaten each other any given time. Both teams are interchangeable too. Flt# 3 with Scoles and Ari are not far behind #1 and#2. in abilities and interchangeable with the #1’s and 2’s . Our Flt #4 is solid as well as our #5’s. From the preseason match vs Poly late last year til now is no comparison. We are very “Talented!”.
I guess we all will find out how good they are and potentially will be
Monkhouse playing at Flight 6 for UCLA. Goes to show the amount of talent available at UCLA.
6. Yeah, unfortunately, it is all about balance over the flights sometimes instead of two top players together. I guess a Maglio/Huddleston is > than a Martin/Huddleston.
Poly, on the other hand, has their two arguably best players (Van Winden and Sonny) on the same flight. It will be interesting to see how it pans out against Poly.
Of course, UCLA just beat Poly 5-0.
Wonder if Monkhouse will see action in the top flights this weekend?
Should be a fun weekend.
Looking at that schedule, it looks like the only match that will replay over and over again on Spectrum will be Nebraska, again. 🙁
Well, maybe U Dub too this time.
Well..you guys should not be surprised. Beach volleyball(at least College Beach Volleyball) is not tv friendly. All the matches are going on at one time and it’s hard to pick which one to televise.
Jeff Hall have said all of their home matches(except for UDUB) will be played at Queens because it simulates how the post season tournament will be like.
Also, multiple team tournaments cannot be played on campus cause UH only have two “playable courts” and it would last from morning to late night to complete a tourney. Queens Beach have the room to hold 6 matches at one time. It is a fan friendly environment but that is the best UH can get now. Until UH find money and space to put in 5 courts, Queens Beach will the UH’s home away from home.
I^^^^I meant to imply that Queens is NOT a fan friendly environment due to no scoreboard and the courts all scattered around the beach. You kind of have to walk up to each court and find the scorecard to find the scores.

new thread up for Thursday
UCLA dominates Cal Poly 5-0
As mentioned, Monkhouse played in the exhibition No. 6.
Metzger only traveling 14.
We’ll see who the Bruins put out on Saturday. With 9 of 10 players returning from last year, and a ton of high school A-As, it will be interesting to see where/when Monkhouse is in the top five.
9. TV doing one match, Nebraska. Washington is at Ching but so far not being televised.
What would help at Queen’s is if they could put up a scoreboard on the screen used for Sunset on the Beach.
Anyway. Crissy Jones (UW AVCA AA) is the real deal; UH should recall how she did the ‘Bows in a few years ago haha. Facts about the Ching Complex too? Two courts are already set up for competition & television. Two practice courts +1 are tucked across the way of the FB field, flushed, up against the pool. UH would be able to host a NCAA Tourney (w Ft DeRussy). A “Singles” competition could be run simultaneously w “Teams” due to those UH flood lights while playing at night.
15. UH cannot host an NCAA tournament at Ching. Or even a dual without splitting the flights since there are only two courts (plus the practice courts across the track at the old basketball courts). The NCAA would not allow split sites and flights need to run simultaneously in a match.
There are plans to expand Ching to have five courts on one side. But that is a ways off.
