Stepteau to be scholarshipped
It’s been a while, Hawaii hoops fans. Here’s something worthwhile to make up for a quiet stretch for offseason news.
UH coach Eran Ganot told the Star-Advertiser on Thursday night that guard Brocke Stepteau is set to receive a scholarship for his senior season of 2018-19.
It’s been a long time coming for the 5-foot-9 Dallas native, who walked on in 2014-15 when Gib Arnold was still the coach, then endured two coaching changes to help guide Eran Ganot’s Rainbow Warriors at point and off guard the last two years.
“Late Clock Brocke” was a savior several times in 2017-18, bailing his team out in some tough situations. He nearly did it one more time at the buzzer of UH’s Big West tournament quarterfinal loss to UC Irvine.
He is, in a word, deserving.
In Friday’s print edition, Ferd Lewis writes about Stepteau’s effect on the program over his four-year (three-year active) career, particularly over the last two seasons, and applauds the decision to scholarship him for the remainder of his UH playing days, though it is not official yet.
Barring any more offseason player movement, Stepteau should represent UH’s last available scholarship for the coming season.
UH’s 2018 class:
Mate Colina, 6-11 F/C
Owen Hulland, 6-11 F
Dawson Carper, 7-0 C
Eddie Stansberry, 6-2 G

UH is still hammering out the final details of its upcoming foreign tour to Australia, still pegged for August. Possible there might be something concrete next week.

The long-awaited renovation work on UH Gym 2 is slated to begin in mid-June and will carry into the basketball preseason, and likely into the start of the regular season. It’s an inconvenience the program is willing to endure for the considerable long-term gains; the ‘Bows can shift between Gym 1 and Klum until Gym 2 is completed (estimated in November/December) and renovation work then shifts to Gym 1 later in the year.
Congratulations to Mr. Stepteau. Well deserved and about time. Stepteau started some games and helped to save several games so it seemed like a “no brainer” to give him a scholarship like his other teammates who are putting in substantial time in games and others who are on scholarship and put in less time in games. The coaches may have their reasons for their reluctance to make the commitment but as a fan, its the right thing to do!
Congrats to Brocke. Thank coach for doing the right thing. a well deserved honor for Brocke.
Maybe we could’ve used another shooter/wing player but Coach Ganot did the right thing … well deserved & well earned … Congratulations Brock …
The whole team should be happy.
Brocke was VERY well-deserving of this. Have a great senior season! Will be watching and rooting from far away Japan. All the best to you.
